वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वा ततो भीष्मो विरराम महायशाः ।
व्याजहारोत्तरं तत्र सहदेवोऽर्थवद्वचः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evamuktvā tato bhīṣmo virarāma mahāyaśāḥ ,
vyājahārottaraṁ tatra sahadevo'rthavadvacaḥ.
1. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca evam uktvā tataḥ bhīṣmaḥ virarāma
mahāyaśāḥ vyājahāra uttaram tatra sahadevaḥ arthavat vacaḥ
1. Vaishampayana said: Having spoken thus, Bhishma, of great fame, then ceased. There, Sahadeva spoke a meaningful reply.
केशवं केशिहन्तारमप्रमेयपराक्रमम् ।
पूज्यमानं मया यो वः कृष्णं न सहते नृपाः ॥२॥
2. keśavaṁ keśihantāramaprameyaparākramam ,
pūjyamānaṁ mayā yo vaḥ kṛṣṇaṁ na sahate nṛpāḥ.
2. keśavam keśihantāram aprameyaparākramam
pūjyamānam mayā yaḥ vaḥ kṛṣṇam na sahate nṛpāḥ
2. O kings, whoever among you cannot tolerate Krishna - who is Keśava, the slayer of Keśi, of immeasurable valor, and who is being worshipped by me -
सर्वेषां बलिनां मूर्ध्नि मयेदं निहितं पदम् ।
एवमुक्ते मया सम्यगुत्तरं प्रब्रवीतु सः ॥३॥
3. sarveṣāṁ balināṁ mūrdhni mayedaṁ nihitaṁ padam ,
evamukte mayā samyaguttaraṁ prabravītu saḥ.
3. sarveṣām balinām mūrdhni mayā idam nihitam padam
evam ukte mayā samyak uttaram prabravītu saḥ
3. I have placed this foot (symbolizing supremacy) upon the heads of all mighty ones. When this has been declared by me, let him (who cannot tolerate Krishna) give a proper reply.
मतिमन्तस्तु ये केचिदाचार्यं पितरं गुरुम् ।
अर्च्यमर्चितमर्चार्हमनुजानन्तु ते नृपाः ॥४॥
4. matimantastu ye kecidācāryaṁ pitaraṁ gurum ,
arcyamarcitamarcārhamanujānantu te nṛpāḥ.
4. matimantaḥ tu ye kecit ācāryam pitaram gurum
arcyam arcitam arcārham anujānantu te nṛpāḥ
4. Indeed, may those intelligent ones, especially those kings among them, acknowledge [him] as a preceptor, a father, and a spiritual teacher (guru), who is worthy of veneration, already venerated, and truly deserving of reverence.
ततो न व्याजहारैषां कश्चिद्बुद्धिमतां सताम् ।
मानिनां बलिनां राज्ञां मध्ये संदर्शिते पदे ॥५॥
5. tato na vyājahāraiṣāṁ kaścidbuddhimatāṁ satām ,
mānināṁ balināṁ rājñāṁ madhye saṁdarśite pade.
5. tataḥ na vyājahāra eṣām kaścit buddhimatām satām
māninām balinām rājñām madhye sandarśite pade
5. Then, when the proposal was presented in their midst, none among those intelligent, virtuous, proud, and powerful kings uttered a word.
ततोऽपतत्पुष्पवृष्टिः सहदेवस्य मूर्धनि ।
अदृश्यरूपा वाचश्चाप्यब्रुवन्साधु साध्विति ॥६॥
6. tato'patatpuṣpavṛṣṭiḥ sahadevasya mūrdhani ,
adṛśyarūpā vācaścāpyabruvansādhu sādhviti.
6. tataḥ apatat puṣpavṛṣṭiḥ sahadevasya mūrdhani
adṛśyarūpāḥ vācaḥ ca api abruvan sādhu sādhu iti
6. Then a shower of flowers fell upon Sahadeva's head, and invisible voices also exclaimed, 'Excellent! Excellent!'
आविध्यदजिनं कृष्णं भविष्यद्भूतजल्पकः ।
सर्वसंशयनिर्मोक्ता नारदः सर्वलोकवित् ॥७॥
7. āvidhyadajinaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ bhaviṣyadbhūtajalpakaḥ ,
sarvasaṁśayanirmoktā nāradaḥ sarvalokavit.
7. āvidhyat ajinam kṛṣṇam bhaviṣyadbhūtajalpakaḥ
sarvasaṃśayanirmoktā nāradaḥ sarvalokavit
7. Narada, the speaker of future and past events, the dispeller of all doubts, and the knower of all worlds, waved the black deerskin.
तत्राहूतागताः सर्वे सुनीथप्रमुखा गणाः ।
संप्रादृश्यन्त संक्रुद्धा विवर्णवदनास्तथा ॥८॥
8. tatrāhūtāgatāḥ sarve sunīthapramukhā gaṇāḥ ,
saṁprādṛśyanta saṁkruddhā vivarṇavadanāstathā.
8. tatra āhūtāgatāḥ sarve sunīthapramukhāḥ gaṇāḥ
samprādṛśyanta saṅkruddhāḥ vivarṇavadanāḥ tathā
8. Then, all the assembled groups, led by Sunītha, appeared there, very angry and also with pale faces.
युधिष्ठिराभिषेकं च वासुदेवस्य चार्हणम् ।
अब्रुवंस्तत्र राजानो निर्वेदादात्मनिश्चयात् ॥९॥
9. yudhiṣṭhirābhiṣekaṁ ca vāsudevasya cārhaṇam ,
abruvaṁstatra rājāno nirvedādātmaniścayāt.
9. yudhiṣṭhirābhiṣekam ca vāsudevasya ca arhaṇam
abruvan tatra rājānaḥ nirvedāt ātmanirṇayāt
9. The kings present there, driven by their despair and firm resolve, then spoke of Yudhiṣṭhira's consecration and the honor for Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa).
सुहृद्भिर्वार्यमाणानां तेषां हि वपुराबभौ ।
आमिषादपकृष्टानां सिंहानामिव गर्जताम् ॥१०॥
10. suhṛdbhirvāryamāṇānāṁ teṣāṁ hi vapurābabhau ,
āmiṣādapakṛṣṭānāṁ siṁhānāmiva garjatām.
10. suhṛdbhiḥ vāryamāṇānām teṣām hi vapuḥ ābabhau
āmiṣāt apakṛṣṭānām siṃhānām iva garjatām
10. Indeed, the forms of those who were being restrained by their friends shone like those of roaring lions pulled away from their prey.
तं बलौघमपर्यन्तं राजसागरमक्षयम् ।
कुर्वाणं समयं कृष्णो युद्धाय बुबुधे तदा ॥११॥
11. taṁ balaughamaparyantaṁ rājasāgaramakṣayam ,
kurvāṇaṁ samayaṁ kṛṣṇo yuddhāya bubudhe tadā.
11. tam balaugham aparyantam rājasāgaram akṣayam
kurvāṇam samayam kṛṣṇaḥ yuddhāya bubudhe tadā
11. Then, Kṛṣṇa perceived that this boundless and inexhaustible ocean of kings, an immense mass of forces, was making preparations for battle.
पूजयित्वा तु पूजार्हं ब्रह्मक्षत्रं विशेषतः ।
सहदेवो नृणां देवः समापयत कर्म तत् ॥१२॥
12. pūjayitvā tu pūjārhaṁ brahmakṣatraṁ viśeṣataḥ ,
sahadevo nṛṇāṁ devaḥ samāpayata karma tat.
12. pūjayitvā tu pūjārham brahmakṣatram viśeṣataḥ
sahadevaḥ nṛṇām devaḥ samāpayata karma tat
12. Sahadeva, the chief among men, having worshipped those worthy of honor, especially the Brahmins and Kshatriyas, then completed that ritual (karma).
तस्मिन्नभ्यर्चिते कृष्णे सुनीथः शत्रुकर्षणः ।
अतिताम्रेक्षणः कोपादुवाच मनुजाधिपान् ॥१३॥
13. tasminnabhyarcite kṛṣṇe sunīthaḥ śatrukarṣaṇaḥ ,
atitāmrekṣaṇaḥ kopāduvāca manujādhipān.
13. tasmin abhyarcite kṛṣṇe sunīthaḥ śatrukārṣaṇaḥ
atitāmrekṣaṇaḥ kopāt uvāca manujādhipān
13. After Kṛṣṇa had been worshipped, Sunītha, the subjugator of foes, his eyes exceedingly red with anger, spoke to the kings.
स्थितः सेनापतिर्वोऽहं मन्यध्वं किं नु सांप्रतम् ।
युधि तिष्ठाम संनह्य समेतान्वृष्णिपाण्डवान् ॥१४॥
14. sthitaḥ senāpatirvo'haṁ manyadhvaṁ kiṁ nu sāṁpratam ,
yudhi tiṣṭhāma saṁnahya sametānvṛṣṇipāṇḍavān.
14. sthitaḥ senāpatiḥ vaḥ aham manyadhvam kim nu sāṃpratam
yudhi tiṣṭhāma saṃnahya sametān vṛṣṇipāṇḍavān
14. I am your general; what do you all think now? Having prepared ourselves, let us stand in battle against the assembled Vṛṣṇis and Pāṇḍavas!
इति सर्वान्समुत्साह्य राज्ञस्तांश्चेदिपुंगवः ।
यज्ञोपघाताय ततः सोऽमन्त्रयत राजभिः ॥१५॥
15. iti sarvānsamutsāhya rājñastāṁścedipuṁgavaḥ ,
yajñopaghātāya tataḥ so'mantrayata rājabhiḥ.
15. iti sarvān samutsāhya rājñaḥ tān ca cedipuṅgavaḥ
yajñopaghātāya tataḥ saḥ amantrayata rājabhiḥ
15. Thus, having incited all those kings, the chief of the Cedi kingdom then consulted with the kings present there, aiming to obstruct the Vedic ritual (yajña).
