संजय उवाच ।
हते द्रोणे महेष्वासे तस्मिन्नहनि भारत ।
कृते च मोघसंकल्पे द्रोणपुत्रे महारथे ॥१॥

द्रवमाणे महाराज कौरवाणां बले तथा ।
व्यूह्य पार्थः स्वकं सैन्यमतिष्ठद्भ्रातृभिः सह ॥२॥
2. dravamāṇe mahārāja kauravāṇāṁ bale tathā ,
vyūhya pārthaḥ svakaṁ sainyamatiṣṭhadbhrātṛbhiḥ saha.

2. O great king, while the Kaurava army was fleeing, Pārtha (Arjuna), after forming his own battle array, stood firm with his brothers.
तमवस्थितमाज्ञाय पुत्रस्ते भरतर्षभ ।
द्रवच्च स्वबलं दृष्ट्वा पौरुषेण न्यवारयत् ॥३॥
3. tamavasthitamājñāya putraste bharatarṣabha ,
dravacca svabalaṁ dṛṣṭvā pauruṣeṇa nyavārayat.

3. O best of Bharatas, realizing that he (Abhimanyu) stood firm, and seeing his own army fleeing, your son checked its retreat with his prowess.
स्वमनीकमवस्थाप्य बाहुवीर्ये व्यवस्थितः ।
युद्ध्वा च सुचिरं कालं पाण्डवैः सह भारत ॥४॥
4. svamanīkamavasthāpya bāhuvīrye vyavasthitaḥ ,
yuddhvā ca suciraṁ kālaṁ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha bhārata.
4. sva-anīkam avasthāpya bāhu-vīrye vyavasthitaḥ
yuddhvā ca suciram kālam pāṇḍavaiḥ saha bhārata
4. bhārata sva-anīkam avasthāpya bāhu-vīrye
vyavasthitaḥ ca pāṇḍavaiḥ saha suciram kālam yuddhvā
4. O Bhārata, having arrayed his own army and stood firm through the prowess of his arms, he fought with the Pāṇḍavas for a very long time.
लब्धलक्षैः परैर्हृष्टैर्व्यायच्छद्भिश्चिरं तदा ।
संध्याकालं समासाद्य प्रत्याहारमकारयत् ॥५॥
5. labdhalakṣaiḥ parairhṛṣṭairvyāyacchadbhiściraṁ tadā ,
saṁdhyākālaṁ samāsādya pratyāhāramakārayat.
5. labdha-lakṣaiḥ paraiḥ hṛṣṭaiḥ vyāyacchadbhiḥ ciram
tadā sandhyā-kālam samāsādya pratyāhāram akārayat

5. Then, facing enemies who had achieved their objective, were jubilant, and had been fighting hard for a long time, he ordered a retreat upon reaching the time of dusk.
कृत्वावहारं सैन्यानां प्रविश्य शिबिरं स्वकम् ।
कुरवोऽऽत्महितं मन्त्रं मन्त्रयां चक्रिरे तदा ॥६॥
6. kṛtvāvahāraṁ sainyānāṁ praviśya śibiraṁ svakam ,
kuravo''tmahitaṁ mantraṁ mantrayāṁ cakrire tadā.
6. kṛtvā avahāram sainyānām praviśya śibiram svakam
kuravaḥ ātma-hitam mantram mantrayām cakrire tadā

6. Then, after withdrawing their armies and entering their own camp, the Kurus deliberated on a plan for their own welfare.
पर्यङ्केषु परार्ध्येषु स्पर्ध्यास्तरणवत्सु च ।
वरासनेषूपविष्टाः सुखशय्यास्विवामराः ॥७॥
7. paryaṅkeṣu parārdhyeṣu spardhyāstaraṇavatsu ca ,
varāsaneṣūpaviṣṭāḥ sukhaśayyāsvivāmarāḥ.

varāsaneṣu upaviṣṭāḥ sukhaśayyāsu iva amarāḥ

7. They were seated on magnificent couches adorned with enviable coverings, and on excellent seats, like immortals resting on comfortable beds.
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा साम्ना परमवल्गुना ।
तानाभाष्य महेष्वासान्प्राप्तकालमभाषत ॥८॥
8. tato duryodhano rājā sāmnā paramavalgunā ,
tānābhāṣya maheṣvāsānprāptakālamabhāṣata.
8. tataḥ duryodhanaḥ rājā sāmnā paramavalguna
tān ābhāṣya maheṣvāsān prāptakālam abhāṣata
8. tataḥ rājā duryodhanaḥ paramavalguna sāmnā

8. Then King Duryodhana, having addressed those great archers with exceedingly gentle and pleasing words of conciliation, spoke appropriately for the occasion.
मतिं मतिमतां श्रेष्ठाः सर्वे प्रब्रूत माचिरम् ।
एवं गते तु यत्कार्यं भवेत्कार्यकरं नृपाः ॥९॥
9. matiṁ matimatāṁ śreṣṭhāḥ sarve prabrūta māciram ,
evaṁ gate tu yatkāryaṁ bhavetkāryakaraṁ nṛpāḥ.
9. matim matimatām śreṣṭhāḥ sarve prabrūta mā ciram
evam gate tu yat kāryam bhavet kāryakaram nṛpāḥ
9. nṛpāḥ matimatām śreṣṭhāḥ sarve matim mā ciram

9. O kings, O best among the wise, all of you, declare your counsel without delay. For when things have come to such a state, whatever action might be effective should be undertaken.
एवमुक्ते नरेन्द्रेण नरसिंहा युयुत्सवः ।
चक्रुर्नानाविधाश्चेष्टाः सिंहासनगतास्तदा ॥१०॥
10. evamukte narendreṇa narasiṁhā yuyutsavaḥ ,
cakrurnānāvidhāśceṣṭāḥ siṁhāsanagatāstadā.
10. evam ukte narendreṇa narasiṃhāḥ yuyutsavaḥ
cakruḥ nānāvidhāḥ ca ceṣṭāḥ siṃhāsanagatāḥ tadā
10. tadā narendreṇa evam ukte siṃhāsanagatāḥ

10. When the king had spoken thus, those lion-like men, eager for battle and seated on their thrones, then performed various actions.
तेषां निशम्येङ्गितानि युद्धे प्राणाञ्जुहूषताम् ।
समुद्वीक्ष्य मुखं राज्ञो बालार्कसमवर्चसः ।
आचार्यपुत्रो मेधावी वाक्यज्ञो वाक्यमाददे ॥११॥
11. teṣāṁ niśamyeṅgitāni yuddhe prāṇāñjuhūṣatām ,
samudvīkṣya mukhaṁ rājño bālārkasamavarcasaḥ ,
ācāryaputro medhāvī vākyajño vākyamādade.
11. teṣām niśamya iṅgitāni yuddhe prāṇān
juhūṣatām samadvīkṣya mukham
rājñaḥ bālārkasamavarcasaḥ ācāryaputraḥ
medhāvī vākyajñaḥ vākyam ādade
11. teṣām yuddhe prāṇān juhūṣatām iṅgitāni niśamya,
bālārkasamavarcasaḥ rājñaḥ mukham samadvīkṣya,
medhāvī vākyajñaḥ ācāryaputraḥ vākyam ādade
11. Hearing their intentions, those who desired to sacrifice their lives in battle, and observing the face of the king, whose radiance was like the rising sun, the intelligent preceptor's son, skilled in speech, then spoke words.
रागो योगस्तथा दाक्ष्यं नयश्चेत्यर्थसाधकाः ।
उपायाः पण्डितैः प्रोक्ताः सर्वे दैवसमाश्रिताः ॥१२॥
12. rāgo yogastathā dākṣyaṁ nayaścetyarthasādhakāḥ ,
upāyāḥ paṇḍitaiḥ proktāḥ sarve daivasamāśritāḥ.
12. rāgaḥ yogaḥ tathā dākṣyam nayaḥ ca iti artha-sādhakāḥ
upāyāḥ paṇḍitaiḥ proktāḥ sarve daivasamāśritāḥ
12. rāgaḥ yogaḥ tathā dākṣyam ca nayaḥ iti paṇḍitaiḥ artha-sādhakāḥ upāyāḥ proktāḥ.
sarve daivasamāśritāḥ.
12. Enthusiasm (rāga), diligent application (yoga), skill, and policy - these are declared by the wise as the means for attaining objectives. All of them are supported by destiny.
लोकप्रवीरा येऽस्माकं देवकल्पा महारथाः ।
नीतिमन्तस्तथा युक्ता दक्षा रक्ताश्च ते हताः ॥१३॥
13. lokapravīrā ye'smākaṁ devakalpā mahārathāḥ ,
nītimantastathā yuktā dakṣā raktāśca te hatāḥ.
13. lokapravīrāḥ ye asmākam devakalpāḥ mahārathāḥ
nītimantaḥ tathā yuktāḥ dakṣāḥ raktāḥ ca te hatāḥ
13. ye lokapravīrāḥ asmākam devakalpāḥ mahārathāḥ nītimantaḥ tathā yuktāḥ dakṣāḥ ca raktāḥ (āsan),
te hatāḥ (santi).
13. Those who were the foremost warriors in the world among us, like unto gods, great charioteers, prudent in policy, committed, skillful, and devoted - they have been slain.
न त्वेव कार्यं नैराश्यमस्माभिर्विजयं प्रति ।
सुनीतैरिह सर्वार्थैर्दैवमप्यनुलोम्यते ॥१४॥
14. na tveva kāryaṁ nairāśyamasmābhirvijayaṁ prati ,
sunītairiha sarvārthairdaivamapyanulomyate.
14. na tu eva kāryam nairāśyam asmābhiḥ vijayam prati
sunītaiḥ iha sarvārthaiḥ daivam api anulomyate
14. tu eva asmābhiḥ vijayam prati nairāśyam na kāryam.
iha sunītaiḥ sarvārthaiḥ api daivam anulomyate.
14. However, despair should not be entertained by us concerning victory. For here, through well-executed policies and all (other) means, even destiny is made favorable.
ते वयं प्रवरं नॄणां सर्वैर्गुणगणैर्युतम् ।
कर्णं सेनापतिं कृत्वा प्रमथिष्यामहे रिपून् ॥१५॥
15. te vayaṁ pravaraṁ nṝṇāṁ sarvairguṇagaṇairyutam ,
karṇaṁ senāpatiṁ kṛtvā pramathiṣyāmahe ripūn.
15. te vayam pravaram nṝṇām sarvaiḥ guṇagaṇaiḥ yutam
karṇam senāpatim kṛtvā pramathiṣyāmahe ripūn
15. vayam te nṝṇām pravaram sarvaiḥ guṇagaṇaiḥ yutam
karṇam senāpatim kṛtvā ripūn pramathiṣyāmahe
15. We, indeed, will crush our enemies by making Karna - who is the foremost among men and endowed with all good qualities - our commander.
ततो दुर्योधनः प्रीतः प्रियं श्रुत्वा वचस्तदा ।
प्रीतिसंस्कारसंयुक्तं तथ्यमात्महितं शुभम् ॥१६॥
16. tato duryodhanaḥ prītaḥ priyaṁ śrutvā vacastadā ,
prītisaṁskārasaṁyuktaṁ tathyamātmahitaṁ śubham.
16. tataḥ duryodhanaḥ prītaḥ priyam śrutvā vacaḥ tadā
prītisaṃskārasaṃyuktam tathyam ātmahitam śubham
16. tataḥ duryodhanaḥ tadā prītisaṃskārasaṃyuktam
tathyam ātmahitam śubham priyam vacaḥ śrutvā prītaḥ
16. Then Duryodhana, pleased, having heard that dear speech - which was endowed with the essence of affection, truthful, beneficial for himself, and auspicious - ...
स्वं मनः समवस्थाप्य बाहुवीर्यमुपाश्रितः ।
दुर्योधनो महाराज राधेयमिदमब्रवीत् ॥१७॥
17. svaṁ manaḥ samavasthāpya bāhuvīryamupāśritaḥ ,
duryodhano mahārāja rādheyamidamabravīt.
17. svam manaḥ samavasthāpya bāhuvīryam upāśritaḥ
duryodhanaḥ mahārāja rādheyam idam abravīt
17. mahārāja duryodhanaḥ svam manaḥ samavasthāpya

17. Having brought his own mind to a state of composure, and relying on the strength of his arms, King Duryodhana spoke these words to Radheya (Karna).
कर्ण जानामि ते वीर्यं सौहृदं च परं मयि ।
तथापि त्वां महाबाहो प्रवक्ष्यामि हितं वचः ॥१८॥
18. karṇa jānāmi te vīryaṁ sauhṛdaṁ ca paraṁ mayi ,
tathāpi tvāṁ mahābāho pravakṣyāmi hitaṁ vacaḥ.
18. karṇa jānāmi te vīryam sauhṛdam ca param mayi
tathāpi tvām mahābāho pravakṣyāmi hitam vacaḥ
18. karṇa mahābāho te vīryam mayi param sauhṛdam
ca jānāmi tathāpi tvām hitam vacaḥ pravakṣyāmi
18. O Karna, I am aware of your valor and your profound friendship towards me. Nevertheless, O mighty-armed one, I will speak beneficial words to you.
श्रुत्वा यथेष्टं च कुरु वीर यत्तव रोचते ।
भवान्प्राज्ञतमो नित्यं मम चैव परा गतिः ॥१९॥
19. śrutvā yatheṣṭaṁ ca kuru vīra yattava rocate ,
bhavānprājñatamo nityaṁ mama caiva parā gatiḥ.
19. śrutvā yathā iṣṭam ca kuru vīra yat tava rocate
bhavān prājñatamaḥ nityam mama ca eva parā gatiḥ
19. vīra śrutvā ca yat tava rocate yathā iṣṭam kuru
bhavān nityam prājñatamaḥ ca mama parā gatiḥ eva
19. O hero, having heard, and whatever pleases you, do as you wish. You are always the most discerning, and indeed my ultimate recourse.
भीष्मद्रोणावतिरथौ हतौ सेनापती मम ।
सेनापतिर्भवानस्तु ताभ्यां द्रविणवत्तरः ॥२०॥
20. bhīṣmadroṇāvatirathau hatau senāpatī mama ,
senāpatirbhavānastu tābhyāṁ draviṇavattaraḥ.
20. bhīṣmadroṇau atirathau hatau senāpatī mama
senāpatiḥ bhavān astu tābhyām draviṇavattaraḥ
20. mama atirathau senāpatī bhīṣmadroṇau hatau
bhavān tābhyām draviṇavattaraḥ senāpatiḥ astu
20. My two great chariot-warriors (atiratha), Bhishma and Drona, who were my commanders, have been slain. May Your Honor become the commander, more powerful than those two.
वृद्धौ च तौ महेष्वासौ सापेक्षौ च धनंजये ।
मानितौ च मया वीरौ राधेय वचनात्तव ॥२१॥
21. vṛddhau ca tau maheṣvāsau sāpekṣau ca dhanaṁjaye ,
mānitau ca mayā vīrau rādheya vacanāttava.
21. vṛddhau ca tau maheṣvāsau sāpekṣau ca dhanañjaye
mānitau ca mayā vīrau rādheya vacanāt tava
21. rādheya tau vṛddhau ca maheṣvāsau ca dhanañjaye
sāpekṣau vīrau ca mayā tava vacanāt mānitau
21. O Radheya, those two great archers were aged and also favorably inclined towards Dhananjaya (Arjuna). Moreover, those heroes were honored by me on your instruction.
पितामहत्वं संप्रेक्ष्य पाण्डुपुत्रा महारणे ।
रक्षितास्तात भीष्मेण दिवसानि दशैव ह ॥२२॥
22. pitāmahatvaṁ saṁprekṣya pāṇḍuputrā mahāraṇe ,
rakṣitāstāta bhīṣmeṇa divasāni daśaiva ha.
22. pitāmahatvam samprekṣya pāṇḍuputrā mahāraṇe
rakṣitāḥ tāta bhīṣmeṇa divasāni daśa eva ha
22. tāta bhīṣmeṇa pitāmahatvam samprekṣya pāṇḍuputrā
mahāraṇe daśa divasāni eva ha rakṣitāḥ
22. O dear one, having deeply considered his status as their grandfather, Bhishma protected the sons of Pandu in the great battle for ten days only, indeed.
न्यस्तशस्त्रे च भवति हतो भीष्मः पितामहः ।
शिखण्डिनं पुरस्कृत्य फल्गुनेन महाहवे ॥२३॥
23. nyastaśastre ca bhavati hato bhīṣmaḥ pitāmahaḥ ,
śikhaṇḍinaṁ puraskṛtya phalgunena mahāhave.
23. nyastaśastre ca bhavati hataḥ bhīṣmaḥ pitāmahaḥ
śikhaṇḍinam puraskṛtya phalgunena mahāhave
23. mahāhave ca nyastaśastre pitāmahaḥ bhīṣmaḥ
śikhaṇḍinam puraskṛtya phalgunena hataḥ bhavati
23. And so, in that great battle, the grandfather Bhishma, having laid down his weapons, was killed by Arjuna, who had placed Shikhandin in front.
हते तस्मिन्महाभागे शरतल्पगते तदा ।
त्वयोक्ते पुरुषव्याघ्र द्रोणो ह्यासीत्पुरःसरः ॥२४॥
24. hate tasminmahābhāge śaratalpagate tadā ,
tvayokte puruṣavyāghra droṇo hyāsītpuraḥsaraḥ.
24. hate tasmin mahābhāge śaratpalgate tadā tvayā
ukte puruṣavyāghra droṇaḥ hi āsīt puraḥsaraḥ
24. tadā puruṣavyāghra tasmin mahābhāge śaratpalgate
hate tvayā ukte (sati) droṇaḥ hi puraḥsaraḥ āsīt
24. Then, O tiger among men, when that greatly fortunate one, having fallen upon a bed of arrows, was killed, Drona indeed became the commander, as you had stated.
तेनापि रक्षिताः पार्थाः शिष्यत्वादिह संयुगे ।
स चापि निहतो वृद्धो धृष्टद्युम्नेन सत्वरम् ॥२५॥
25. tenāpi rakṣitāḥ pārthāḥ śiṣyatvādiha saṁyuge ,
sa cāpi nihato vṛddho dhṛṣṭadyumnena satvaram.
25. tena api rakṣitāḥ pārthāḥ śiṣyatvāt iha saṃyuge
saḥ ca api nihataḥ vṛddhaḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnena satvaram
25. iha saṃyuge tena api śiṣyatvāt pārthāḥ rakṣitāḥ ca
api saḥ vṛddhaḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnena satvaram nihataḥ
25. And by him (Drona), the sons of Pritha (pārthāḥ) were protected in this battle due to their status as his students. But he, though aged, was also swiftly killed by Dhrishtadyumna.
निहताभ्यां प्रधानाभ्यां ताभ्याममितविक्रम ।
त्वत्समं समरे योधं नान्यं पश्यामि चिन्तयन् ॥२६॥
26. nihatābhyāṁ pradhānābhyāṁ tābhyāmamitavikrama ,
tvatsamaṁ samare yodhaṁ nānyaṁ paśyāmi cintayan.
26. nihatābhyām pradhānābhyām tābhyām amitavikrama
tvatsamam samare yodham na anyam paśyāmi cintayan
26. amitavikrama,
nihatābhyām pradhānābhyām tābhyām (satsu),
(aham) cintayan (api) samare tvatsamam anyam yodham na paśyāmi
26. O You of immeasurable valor, considering the fall of those two foremost warriors, I do not see any other fighter in battle who is equal to you, even after much thought.
भवानेव तु नः शक्तो विजयाय न संशयः ।
पूर्वं मध्ये च पश्चाच्च तवैव विदितं हि तत् ॥२७॥
27. bhavāneva tu naḥ śakto vijayāya na saṁśayaḥ ,
pūrvaṁ madhye ca paścācca tavaiva viditaṁ hi tat.
27. bhavān eva tu naḥ śaktaḥ vijayāya na saṃśayaḥ
pūrvam madhye ca paścāt ca tava eva viditam hi tat
27. bhavān eva tu naḥ vijayāya śaktaḥ na saṃśayaḥ hi
tat tava eva pūrvam madhye ca paścāt ca viditam
27. You alone are certainly capable of securing victory for us; there is no doubt. Indeed, that outcome is known to you alone, whether in the beginning, the middle, or the end.
स भवान्धुर्यवत्संख्ये धुरमुद्वोढुमर्हसि ।
अभिषेचय सेनान्ये स्वयमात्मानमात्मना ॥२८॥
28. sa bhavāndhuryavatsaṁkhye dhuramudvoḍhumarhasi ,
abhiṣecaya senānye svayamātmānamātmanā.
28. saḥ bhavān dhuryavat saṃkhye dhuram udvoḍhum
arhasi abhiṣecaya senānye svayam ātmānam ātmanā
28. saḥ bhavān dhuryavat saṃkhye dhuram udvoḍhum
arhasi svayam ātmanā ātmānam senānye abhiṣecaya
28. Therefore, like a beast of burden, you are fit to carry the main responsibility in battle. Anoint yourself as the commander (senānī) by your own self (ātman).
देवतानां यथा स्कन्दः सेनानीः प्रभुरव्ययः ।
तथा भवानिमां सेनां धार्तराष्ट्रीं बिभर्तु मे ।
जहि शत्रुगणान्सर्वान्महेन्द्र इव दानवान् ॥२९॥
29. devatānāṁ yathā skandaḥ senānīḥ prabhuravyayaḥ ,
tathā bhavānimāṁ senāṁ dhārtarāṣṭrīṁ bibhartu me ,
jahi śatrugaṇānsarvānmahendra iva dānavān.
29. devatānām yathā skandaḥ senānīḥ
prabhuḥ avyayaḥ tathā bhavān imām senām
dhārtarāṣṭrīm bibhartu me jahi
śatrugaṇān sarvān mahendraḥ iva dānavān
29. yathā devatānām skandaḥ senānīḥ
prabhuḥ avyayaḥ tathā bhavān me imām
dhārtarāṣṭrīm senām bibhartu mahendraḥ
iva sarvān dānavān śatrugaṇān jahi
29. Just as Skanda is the imperishable commander (senānī) and lord of the gods, so may you lead this army of Dhṛtarāṣṭra's sons for me. Destroy all the hosts of enemies, just as Mahendra (Indra) destroyed the Dānavas.
अवस्थितं रणे ज्ञात्वा पाण्डवास्त्वां महारथम् ।
द्रविष्यन्ति सपाञ्चाला विष्णुं दृष्ट्वेव दानवाः ।
तस्मात्त्वं पुरुषव्याघ्र प्रकर्षेथा महाचमूम् ॥३०॥
30. avasthitaṁ raṇe jñātvā pāṇḍavāstvāṁ mahāratham ,
draviṣyanti sapāñcālā viṣṇuṁ dṛṣṭveva dānavāḥ ,
tasmāttvaṁ puruṣavyāghra prakarṣethā mahācamūm.

30. Knowing you, the great warrior (mahāratha), to be present on the battlefield, the Pāṇḍavas, along with the Pāñcālas, will flee, just as the Dānavas flee upon seeing Viṣṇu. Therefore, O tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), you should lead this great army forward.
भवत्यवस्थिते यत्ते पाण्डवा गतचेतसः ।
भविष्यन्ति सहामात्याः पाञ्चालैः सृञ्जयैः सह ॥३१॥
31. bhavatyavasthite yatte pāṇḍavā gatacetasaḥ ,
bhaviṣyanti sahāmātyāḥ pāñcālaiḥ sṛñjayaiḥ saha.
31. bhavati avasthite yat te pāṇḍavāḥ gatacetasaḥ
bhaviṣyanti saha-amātyāḥ pāñcālaiḥ sṛñjayaiḥ saha
31. yat te pāṇḍavāḥ gatacetasaḥ avasthite bhavati,
saha amātyāḥ pāñcālaiḥ sṛñjayaiḥ saha bhaviṣyanti
31. When it is established that your Pandavas are bewildered, they will be so along with their ministers, the Panchalas, and the Srinjayas.
यथा ह्यभ्युदितः सूर्यः प्रतपन्स्वेन तेजसा ।
व्यपोहति तमस्तीव्रं तथा शत्रून्व्यपोह नः ॥३२॥
32. yathā hyabhyuditaḥ sūryaḥ pratapansvena tejasā ,
vyapohati tamastīvraṁ tathā śatrūnvyapoha naḥ.
32. yathā hi abhyuditaḥ sūryaḥ pratapan svena tejasā
vyapohati tamaḥ tīvram tathā śatrūn vyapoha naḥ
32. hi yathā abhyuditaḥ sūryaḥ svena tejasā pratapan tīvram tamaḥ vyapohati,
tathā naḥ śatrūn vyapoha
32. Indeed, just as the risen sun, shining with its own splendor, dispels intense darkness, so too dispel our enemies.
कर्ण उवाच ।
उक्तमेतन्मया पूर्वं गान्धारे तव संनिधौ ।
जेष्यामि पाण्डवान्राजन्सपुत्रान्सजनार्दनान् ॥३३॥
33. karṇa uvāca ,
uktametanmayā pūrvaṁ gāndhāre tava saṁnidhau ,
jeṣyāmi pāṇḍavānrājansaputrānsajanārdanān.
33. karṇaḥ uvāca uktam etat mayā pūrvam gāndhāre tava
saṃnidhau jeṣyāmi pāṇḍavān rājan sa-putrān sa-janārdanān
33. karṇaḥ uvāca: "he gāndhāre,
he rājan,
etat mayā pūrvam tava saṃnidhau uktam: 'sa-putrān sa-janārdanān pāṇḍavān jeṣyāmi'"
33. Karṇa said: "This was indeed said by me previously, O Gāndhāra, in your presence, O King: 'I shall conquer the Pandavas, along with their sons and Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa).'"
सेनापतिर्भविष्यामि तवाहं नात्र संशयः ।
स्थिरो भव महाराज जितान्विद्धि च पाण्डवान् ॥३४॥
34. senāpatirbhaviṣyāmi tavāhaṁ nātra saṁśayaḥ ,
sthiro bhava mahārāja jitānviddhi ca pāṇḍavān.
34. senāpatiḥ bhaviṣyāmi tava aham na atra saṃśayaḥ
sthiraḥ bhava mahārāja jitān viddhi ca pāṇḍavān
34. aham tava senāpatiḥ bhaviṣyāmi; atra saṃśayaḥ na.
he mahārāja,
sthiraḥ bhava ca pāṇḍavān jitān viddhi
34. I shall be your commander-in-chief; there is no doubt about this. O great king, be firm, and know the Pandavas to be vanquished.
संजय उवाच ।
एवमुक्तो महातेजास्ततो दुर्योधनो नृपः ।
उत्तस्थौ राजभिः सार्धं देवैरिव शतक्रतुः ।
सेनापत्येन सत्कर्तुं कर्णं स्कन्दमिवामराः ॥३५॥
35. saṁjaya uvāca ,
evamukto mahātejāstato duryodhano nṛpaḥ ,
uttasthau rājabhiḥ sārdhaṁ devairiva śatakratuḥ ,
senāpatyena satkartuṁ karṇaṁ skandamivāmarāḥ.

Duryodhanaḥ nṛpaḥ uttasthau rājabhiḥ
sārdham devaiḥ iva śatakratuḥ senāpatyena

35. Sañjaya said: Thus addressed, the mighty-splendored King Duryodhana then rose up with the kings, just as Indra (śatakratu) would rise with the deities. (He did this) to honor Karṇa with the position of commander-in-chief, just as the immortals (amarāḥ) would honor Skanda.
ततोऽभिषिषिचुस्तूर्णं विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा ।
दुर्योधनमुखा राजन्राजानो विजयैषिणः ।
शातकौम्भमयैः कुम्भैर्माहेयैश्चाभिमन्त्रितैः ॥३६॥
36. tato'bhiṣiṣicustūrṇaṁ vidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā ,
duryodhanamukhā rājanrājāno vijayaiṣiṇaḥ ,
śātakaumbhamayaiḥ kumbhairmāheyaiścābhimantritaiḥ.

rājānaḥ vijayaiṣiṇaḥ śātakumbhamayaiḥ

36. Then, O King, the kings, led by Duryodhana and desiring victory, quickly performed the anointing ceremony with rites (karma) prescribed by sacred rules, using pitchers made of pure gold and also earthen pitchers consecrated by sacred syllables (mantra).
तोयपूर्णैर्विषाणैश्च द्वीपिखड्गमहर्षभैः ।
मणिमुक्तामयैश्चान्यैः पुण्यगन्धैस्तथौषधैः ॥३७॥
37. toyapūrṇairviṣāṇaiśca dvīpikhaḍgamaharṣabhaiḥ ,
maṇimuktāmayaiścānyaiḥ puṇyagandhaistathauṣadhaiḥ.

37. (They anointed him) with horns filled with water, including those of tigers (dvīpi), rhinoceroses (khaḍga), and great bulls (maharṣabha), and with other (vessels) made of jewels and pearls, and with sacred fragrant substances, and with medicinal herbs.
औदुम्बरे समासीनमासने क्षौमसंवृतम् ।
शास्त्रदृष्टेन विधिना संभारैश्च सुसंभृतैः ॥३८॥
38. audumbare samāsīnamāsane kṣaumasaṁvṛtam ,
śāstradṛṣṭena vidhinā saṁbhāraiśca susaṁbhṛtaiḥ.

38. (They anointed him) while he was seated on a fig-wood (audumbara) throne, covered with silk cloth, using methods prescribed by the scriptures (śāstra) and with well-prepared materials.
जय पार्थान्सगोविन्दान्सानुगांस्त्वं महाहवे ।
इति तं बन्दिनः प्राहुर्द्विजाश्च भरतर्षभ ॥३९॥
39. jaya pārthānsagovindānsānugāṁstvaṁ mahāhave ,
iti taṁ bandinaḥ prāhurdvijāśca bharatarṣabha.
39. jaya pārthān sagovindān sānugān tvam mahāhave
iti tam bandinaḥ prāhuḥ dvijāḥ ca bharatarṣabha
39. bharatarṣabha bandinaḥ ca dvijāḥ iti tam prāhuḥ

39. O bull among the Bhāratas, the bards and Brahmins (dvijāḥ) said to him, 'You, conquer the Pārthas, along with Govinda (Krishna) and their followers, in this great battle!'
जहि पार्थान्सपाञ्चालान्राधेय विजयाय नः ।
उद्यन्निव सदा भानुस्तमांस्युग्रैर्गभस्तिभिः ॥४०॥
40. jahi pārthānsapāñcālānrādheya vijayāya naḥ ,
udyanniva sadā bhānustamāṁsyugrairgabhastibhiḥ.
40. jahi pārthān sapāñcālān rādheya vijayāya naḥ
udyan iva sadā bhānuḥ tamāṃsi ugraiḥ gabhastibhiḥ
40. rādheya naḥ vijayāya pārthān sapāñcālān jahi sadā
udyan bhānuḥ iva ugraiḥ gabhastibhiḥ tamāṃsi
40. O son of Rādhā (Rādheya), destroy the Pārthas and the Pāñcālas for our victory, just as the rising sun always dispels darkness with its fierce rays.
न ह्यलं त्वद्विसृष्टानां शराणां ते सकेशवाः ।
कृतघ्नाः सूर्यरश्मीनां ज्वलतामिव दर्शने ॥४१॥
41. na hyalaṁ tvadvisṛṣṭānāṁ śarāṇāṁ te sakeśavāḥ ,
kṛtaghnāḥ sūryaraśmīnāṁ jvalatāmiva darśane.
41. na hi alam tvat visṛṣṭānām śarāṇām te sakeśavāḥ
kṛtaghnāḥ sūryaraśmīnām jvalatām iva darśane
41. hi te sakeśavāḥ kṛtaghnāḥ tvat visṛṣṭānām śarāṇām
na alam jvalatām sūryaraśmīnām darśane iva
41. Indeed, those ungrateful ones (kṛtaghnāḥ) along with Keśava (Krishna) are not capable of withstanding your released arrows, just as one cannot endure the sight of blazing sun's rays.
न हि पार्थाः सपाञ्चालाः स्थातुं शक्तास्तवाग्रतः ।
आत्तशस्त्रस्य समरे महेन्द्रस्येव दानवाः ॥४२॥
42. na hi pārthāḥ sapāñcālāḥ sthātuṁ śaktāstavāgrataḥ ,
āttaśastrasya samare mahendrasyeva dānavāḥ.
42. na hi pārthāḥ sapāñcālāḥ sthātum śaktāḥ tava
agrataḥ āttaśastrasya samare mahendrasya iva dānavāḥ
42. hi pārthāḥ sapāñcālāḥ tava agrataḥ sthātum na
śaktāḥ samare āttaśastrasya mahendrasya dānavāḥ iva
42. Indeed, the Pārthas along with the Pāñcālas are not capable of standing before you, just as the Dānavas (demons) are not capable of standing before Mahendra (Indra) who has taken up his weapon in battle.
अभिषिक्तस्तु राधेयः प्रभया सोऽमितप्रभः ।
व्यत्यरिच्यत रूपेण दिवाकर इवापरः ॥४३॥
43. abhiṣiktastu rādheyaḥ prabhayā so'mitaprabhaḥ ,
vyatyaricyata rūpeṇa divākara ivāparaḥ.
43. abhiṣiktaḥ tu rādheyaḥ prabhayā saḥ amita-prabhaḥ
vyatyaricyata rūpeṇa divākaraḥ iva aparaḥ
43. rādheyaḥ abhiṣiktaḥ tu saḥ amita-prabhaḥ prabhayā

43. Indeed, the son of Rādhā (Rādheya), once consecrated, being already of immeasurable splendor, surpassed others in beauty, like another sun.
सेनापत्येन राधेयमभिषिच्य सुतस्तव ।
अमन्यत तदात्मानं कृतार्थं कालचोदितः ॥४४॥
44. senāpatyena rādheyamabhiṣicya sutastava ,
amanyata tadātmānaṁ kṛtārthaṁ kālacoditaḥ.
44. senāpatyena rādheyam abhiṣicya sutaḥ tava
amanyata tadā ātmānam kṛtārtham kāla-coditaḥ

44. Having consecrated the son of Rādhā (Rādheya) to the position of commander-in-chief, your son (Duryodhana) then, impelled by time or fate, considered himself to have fulfilled his objective (kṛtārtham).
कर्णोऽपि राजन्संप्राप्य सेनापत्यमरिंदमः ।
योगमाज्ञापयामास सूर्यस्योदयनं प्रति ॥४५॥
45. karṇo'pi rājansaṁprāpya senāpatyamariṁdamaḥ ,
yogamājñāpayāmāsa sūryasyodayanaṁ prati.
45. karṇaḥ api rājan samprāpya senāpatyam ariṃ-damaḥ
yogam ājñāpayām āsa sūryasya udayanam prati
45. rājan ariṃ-damaḥ karṇaḥ api senāpatyam samprāpya
sūryasya udayanam prati yogam ājñāpayām āsa
45. O king, Karna, the subduer of enemies, having also obtained the position of commander-in-chief, commanded the engagement (yoga) to commence at sunrise.
तव पुत्रैर्वृतः कर्णः शुशुभे तत्र भारत ।
देवैरिव यथा स्कन्दः संग्रामे तारकामये ॥४६॥
46. tava putrairvṛtaḥ karṇaḥ śuśubhe tatra bhārata ,
devairiva yathā skandaḥ saṁgrāme tārakāmaye.
46. tava putraiḥ vṛtaḥ karṇaḥ śuśubhe tatra bhārata
devaiḥ iva yathā skandaḥ saṃgrāme tārakāmaye
46. bhārata tatra tava putraiḥ vṛtaḥ karṇaḥ yathā

46. O Bhārata (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), Karna, surrounded by your sons, shone there just like Skanda, accompanied by the gods, in the war against Tārakā (tārakāmaya).
