संजय उवाच ।
हिरण्वत्यां निविष्टेषु पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु ।
दुर्योधनो महाराज कर्णेन सह भारत ॥१॥

1. Sanjaya said: "O great king (mahārāja), O descendant of Bharata (bhārata), when the great-souled (mahātman) Pāṇḍavas were settled on the Hiraṇvatī, Duryodhana, accompanied by Karṇa..."
सौबलेन च राजेन्द्र तथा दुःशासनेन च ।
आहूयोपह्वरे राजन्नुलूकमिदमब्रवीत् ॥२॥
2. saubalena ca rājendra tathā duḥśāsanena ca ,
āhūyopahvare rājannulūkamidamabravīt.

2. ...O king of kings (rājendra), and with Saubala (Śakuni) and Duḥśāsana, having called Ulūka to a solitary place, O king (rājan), he (Duryodhana) spoke this.
उलूक गच्छ कैतव्य पाण्डवान्सहसोमकान् ।
गत्वा मम वचो ब्रूहि वासुदेवस्य शृण्वतः ॥३॥
3. ulūka gaccha kaitavya pāṇḍavānsahasomakān ,
gatvā mama vaco brūhi vāsudevasya śṛṇvataḥ.

3. kaitavya ulūka,

3. "O Ulūka, son of Kaitavya, go to the Pāṇḍavas along with the Somakas. Having gone there, speak my words while Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) is listening."
इदं तत्समनुप्राप्तं वर्षपूगाभिचिन्तितम् ।
पाण्डवानां कुरूणां च युद्धं लोकभयंकरम् ॥४॥
4. idaṁ tatsamanuprāptaṁ varṣapūgābhicintitam ,
pāṇḍavānāṁ kurūṇāṁ ca yuddhaṁ lokabhayaṁkaram.
4. idam tat samanuprāptam varṣapūgābhicintitam
pāṇḍavānām kurūṇām ca yuddham lokabhayaṃkaram
4. idam,
varṣapūgābhicintitam tat ca lokabhayaṃkaram pāṇḍavānām kurūṇām yuddham,
(adhunā) samanuprāptam (asti)
4. "This (is) that [war] which was contemplated for many years, the world-terrifying war of the Pāṇḍavas and the Kurus, (which has) now arrived."
यदेतत्कत्थनावाक्यं संजयो महदब्रवीत् ।
मध्ये कुरूणां कौन्तेय तस्य कालोऽयमागतः ।
यथा वः संप्रतिज्ञातं तत्सर्वं क्रियतामिति ॥५॥
5. yadetatkatthanāvākyaṁ saṁjayo mahadabravīt ,
madhye kurūṇāṁ kaunteya tasya kālo'yamāgataḥ ,
yathā vaḥ saṁpratijñātaṁ tatsarvaṁ kriyatāmiti.
5. yat etat katthana-vākyaṃ saṃjayaḥ
mahat abravīt madhye kurūṇām kaunteya
tasya kālaḥ ayam āgataḥ yathā vaḥ
saṃpratijñātam tat sarvam kriyatām iti
5. kaunteya kurūṇām madhye saṃjayaḥ yat
etat mahat katthana-vākyaṃ abravīt
tasya ayam kālaḥ āgataḥ yathā vaḥ
saṃpratijñātam tat sarvam kriyatām iti
5. O son of Kuntī, the time has now come for that great boastful statement (katthana-vākya) which Sañjaya uttered among the Kurus. Let all that which was promised by you be accomplished.
अमर्षं राज्यहरणं वनवासं च पाण्डव ।
द्रौपद्याश्च परिक्लेशं संस्मरन्पुरुषो भव ॥६॥
6. amarṣaṁ rājyaharaṇaṁ vanavāsaṁ ca pāṇḍava ,
draupadyāśca parikleśaṁ saṁsmaranpuruṣo bhava.
6. amarṣam rājya-haraṇam vana-vāsam ca pāṇḍava
draupadyāḥ ca parikleśam saṃsmaran puruṣaḥ bhava
6. pāṇḍava amarṣam rājya-haraṇam vana-vāsam ca
draupadyāḥ ca parikleśam saṃsmaran puruṣaḥ bhava
6. O Pāṇḍava, remembering your indignation (amarṣa), the seizure of your kingdom, the forest exile, and Draupadī's great distress, be a true man (puruṣa)!
यदर्थं क्षत्रिया सूते गर्भं तदिदमागतम् ।
बलं वीर्यं च शौर्यं च परं चाप्यस्त्रलाघवम् ।
पौरुषं दर्शयन्युद्धे कोपस्य कुरु निष्कृतिम् ॥७॥
7. yadarthaṁ kṣatriyā sūte garbhaṁ tadidamāgatam ,
balaṁ vīryaṁ ca śauryaṁ ca paraṁ cāpyastralāghavam ,
pauruṣaṁ darśayanyuddhe kopasya kuru niṣkṛtim.
7. yadartham kṣatriyā sūte garbham tat
idam āgatam balam vīryam ca śauryam ca
param ca api astrālāghavam pauruṣam
darśayan yuddhe kopasya kuru niṣkṛtim
7. yadartham kṣatriyā garbham sūte tat
idam āgatam yuddhe balam vīryam ca
śauryam ca param ca api astrālāghavam
pauruṣam darśayan kopasya niṣkṛtim kuru
7. This very situation has arrived, for which a kṣatriya woman gives birth to an offspring. In battle, displaying your strength, valor, heroism, and supreme skill in weaponry (astralāghava), as well as your manliness (pauruṣa), take vengeance for your anger (kopa).
परिक्लिष्टस्य दीनस्य दीर्घकालोषितस्य च ।
न स्फुटेद्धृदयं कस्य ऐश्वर्याद्भ्रंशितस्य च ॥८॥
8. parikliṣṭasya dīnasya dīrghakāloṣitasya ca ,
na sphuṭeddhṛdayaṁ kasya aiśvaryādbhraṁśitasya ca.
8. parikliṣṭasya dīnasya dīrgha-kāloṣitasya ca na
sphuṭet hṛdayam kasya aiśvaryāt bhraṃśitasya ca
8. kasya parikliṣṭasya dīnasya dīrgha-kāloṣitasya
ca aiśvaryāt bhraṃśitasya ca hṛdayam na sphuṭet
8. Whose heart would not burst—the heart of one who is greatly distressed, miserable, has long endured (suffering), and has fallen from sovereignty?
कुले जातस्य शूरस्य परवित्तेषु गृध्यतः ।
आच्छिन्नं राज्यमाक्रम्य कोपं कस्य न दीपयेत् ॥९॥
9. kule jātasya śūrasya paravitteṣu gṛdhyataḥ ,
ācchinnaṁ rājyamākramya kopaṁ kasya na dīpayet.

ācchinnaṃ rājyam ākramya kopaṃ kasya na dīpayet

9. Whose anger would it not ignite, when a hero of noble birth, covetous of wealth, reclaims a kingdom that had been usurped?
यत्तदुक्तं महद्वाक्यं कर्मणा तद्विभाव्यताम् ।
अकर्मणा कत्थितेन सन्तः कुपुरुषं विदुः ॥१०॥
10. yattaduktaṁ mahadvākyaṁ karmaṇā tadvibhāvyatām ,
akarmaṇā katthitena santaḥ kupuruṣaṁ viduḥ.
10. yat tat uktam mahat vākyaṃ karmaṇā tat vibhāvyatām
akarmaṇā katthitena santaḥ kupuruṣaṃ viduḥ
10. yat mahat vākyaṃ uktam tat karmaṇā vibhāvyatām
santaḥ akarmaṇā katthitena kupuruṣaṃ viduḥ
10. Let that great statement which was spoken be demonstrated by action. The wise recognize an ignoble person by their inaction and mere boasting.
अमित्राणां वशे स्थानं राज्यस्य च पुनर्भवः ।
द्वावर्थौ युध्यमानस्य तस्मात्कुरुत पौरुषम् ॥११॥
11. amitrāṇāṁ vaśe sthānaṁ rājyasya ca punarbhavaḥ ,
dvāvarthau yudhyamānasya tasmātkuruta pauruṣam.
11. amitrāṇām vaśe sthānaṃ rājyasya ca punarbhavaḥ
dvau arthau yudhyamānasya tasmāt kuruta pauruṣam
11. yudhyamānasya amitrāṇām vaśe sthānaṃ ca rājyasya
punarbhavaḥ dvau arthau tasmāt kuruta pauruṣam
11. To remain under the control of enemies or to regain the kingdom are the two outcomes for one who fights. Therefore, show your valor.
अस्मान्वा त्वं पराजित्य प्रशाधि पृथिवीमिमाम् ।
अथ वा निहतोऽस्माभिर्वीरलोकं गमिष्यसि ॥१२॥
12. asmānvā tvaṁ parājitya praśādhi pṛthivīmimām ,
atha vā nihato'smābhirvīralokaṁ gamiṣyasi.
12. asmān vā tvaṃ parājitya praśādhi pṛthivīm imām
atha vā nihataḥ asmābhiḥ vīralokaṃ gamiṣyasi
12. tvaṃ asmān vā parājitya imām pṛthivīm praśādhi
atha vā asmābhiḥ nihataḥ vīralokaṃ gamiṣyasi
12. Either you defeat us and rule this earth, or else, slain by us, you will go to the world of heroes.
राष्ट्रात्प्रव्राजनं क्लेशं वनवासं च पाण्डव ।
कृष्णायाश्च परिक्लेशं संस्मरन्पुरुषो भव ॥१३॥
13. rāṣṭrātpravrājanaṁ kleśaṁ vanavāsaṁ ca pāṇḍava ,
kṛṣṇāyāśca parikleśaṁ saṁsmaranpuruṣo bhava.
13. rāṣṭrāt pravrājanam kleśam vanavāsam ca pāṇḍava
| kṛṣṇāyāḥ ca parikleśam saṃsmaran puruṣaḥ bhava
13. pāṇḍava,
rāṣṭrāt pravrājanam,
kleśam,
ca vanavāsam,
ca kṛṣṇāyāḥ parikleśam saṃsmaran puruṣaḥ bhava.
13. O Pāṇḍava, remembering the exile from the kingdom, the distress, the forest dwelling, and the great suffering of Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), be a (true) man (puruṣa).
अप्रियाणां च वचने प्रव्रजत्सु पुनः पुनः ।
अमर्षं दर्शयाद्य त्वममर्षो ह्येव पौरुषम् ॥१४॥
14. apriyāṇāṁ ca vacane pravrajatsu punaḥ punaḥ ,
amarṣaṁ darśayādya tvamamarṣo hyeva pauruṣam.
14. apriyāṇām ca vacane pravrajatsu punaḥ punaḥ |
amarṣam darśaya adya tvam amarṣaḥ hi eva pauruṣam
14. adya tvam apriyāṇām vacane ca punaḥ punaḥ pravrajatsu amarṣam darśaya,
hi amarṣaḥ eva pauruṣam.
14. Today, you (tvam) must show your indignation (amarṣa) in the speech (vacane) of your enemies (apriyāṇām) and when there is repeated exile (pravrajatsu punaḥ punaḥ). Indeed, indignation (amarṣa) is (true) manly strength (pauruṣam).
क्रोधो बलं तथा वीर्यं ज्ञानयोगोऽस्त्रलाघवम् ।
इह ते पार्थ दृश्यन्तां संग्रामे पुरुषो भव ॥१५॥
15. krodho balaṁ tathā vīryaṁ jñānayogo'stralāghavam ,
iha te pārtha dṛśyantāṁ saṁgrāme puruṣo bhava.
15. krodhaḥ balam tathā vīryam jñānayogaḥ astralāghavam
| iha te pārtha dṛśyantām saṃgrāme puruṣaḥ bhava
15. pārtha,
iha te krodhaḥ,
balam,
tathā vīryam,
jñānayogaḥ,
astralāghavam ca saṃgrāme dṛśyantām; puruṣaḥ bhava.
15. O Pārtha, let your anger, strength, valor, spiritual discipline (jñānayoga), and skill with weapons be seen here in battle. Be a (true) man (puruṣa)!
तं च तूबरकं मूढं बह्वाशिनमविद्यकम् ।
उलूक मद्वचो ब्रूया असकृद्भीमसेनकम् ॥१६॥
16. taṁ ca tūbarakaṁ mūḍhaṁ bahvāśinamavidyakam ,
ulūka madvaco brūyā asakṛdbhīmasenakam.
16. tam ca tūbarakam mūḍham bahvāśinam avidyakam
| ulūka mat-vacaḥ brūyāḥ asakṛt bhīmasenakam
16. ulūka,
tvam tam tūbarakam mūḍham bahvāśinam avidyakam bhīmasenakam ca asakṛt mat-vacaḥ brūyāḥ.
16. O owl-faced one (ulūka), you should repeatedly speak my words to that foolish, gluttonous, and ignorant Bhīmasenaka (Duryodhana).
अशक्तेनैव यच्छप्तं सभामध्ये वृकोदर ।
दुःशासनस्य रुधिरं पीयतां यदि शक्यते ॥१७॥
17. aśaktenaiva yacchaptaṁ sabhāmadhye vṛkodara ,
duḥśāsanasya rudhiraṁ pīyatāṁ yadi śakyate.
17. aśaktena eva yat śaptam sabhā madhye vṛkodara
duḥśāsanasya rudhiram pīyatām yadi śakyate
17. vṛkodara yadi śakyate aśaktena eva sabhāmadhye
yat duḥśāsanasya rudhiram śaptam pīyatām
17. O Vṛkodara (Bhīma), if it is possible, then let the blood of Duḥśāsana be drunk, the very blood that was sworn upon in the assembly by one who was helpless at that time.
लोहाभिहारो निर्वृत्तः कुरुक्षेत्रमकर्दमम् ।
पुष्टास्तेऽश्वा भृता योधाः श्वो युध्यस्व सकेशवः ॥१८॥
18. lohābhihāro nirvṛttaḥ kurukṣetramakardamam ,
puṣṭāste'śvā bhṛtā yodhāḥ śvo yudhyasva sakeśavaḥ.
18. lohābhihāraḥ nirvṛttaḥ kurukṣetram akardamam puṣṭāḥ
te aśvāḥ bhṛtāḥ yodhāḥ śvaḥ yudhyasva sa-keśavaḥ
18. lohābhihāraḥ nirvṛttaḥ kurukṣetram
akardamam (asti) te aśvāḥ
puṣṭāḥ (santi) yodhāḥ bhṛtāḥ
(santi) śvaḥ sa-keśavaḥ yudhyasva
18. The clash of iron (referring to weaponry and battle) has concluded, and Kurukṣetra is free of mud. Your horses are well-fed, and your warriors (yodhāḥ) are properly supported. Fight tomorrow, along with Keśava (Kṛṣṇa).
