भीष्म उवाच ।
वृत्रस्य तु महाराज ज्वराविष्टस्य सर्वशः ।
अभवन्यानि लिङ्गानि शरीरे तानि मे शृणु ॥१॥

1. Bhīṣma said: O great king, listen to me as I describe all the symptoms that appeared completely in Vṛtra's body when he was thoroughly afflicted by fever.
ज्वलितास्योऽभवद्घोरो वैवर्ण्यं चागमत्परम् ।
गात्रकम्पश्च सुमहाञ्श्वासश्चाप्यभवन्महान् ।
रोमहर्षश्च तीव्रोऽभून्निःश्वासश्च महान्नृप ॥२॥
2. jvalitāsyo'bhavadghoro vaivarṇyaṁ cāgamatparam ,
gātrakampaśca sumahāñśvāsaścāpyabhavanmahān ,
romaharṣaśca tīvro'bhūnniḥśvāsaśca mahānnṛpa.

āgamat param | gātrakampaḥ ca sumahān

2. (tasyāsyam) jvalitāsyaḥ ghoraḥ abhavat.
ca param vaivarṇyam āgamat.
ca sumahān gātrakampaḥ abhavat.
ca api mahān śvāsaḥ abhavat.
ca tīvraḥ romaharṣaḥ abhūt.
nṛpa ca mahān niḥśvāsaḥ (abhūt)
2. His face became fiery and terrifying, and he developed extreme discoloration. There was a very great trembling of his limbs, and he also experienced mighty shortness of breath. Intense horripilation (hair standing on end) and mighty sighs also manifested, O king.
शिवा चाशिवसंकाशा तस्य वक्त्रात्सुदारुणा ।
निष्पपात महाघोरा स्मृतिः सा तस्य भारत ।
उल्काश्च ज्वलितास्तस्य दीप्ताः पार्श्वे प्रपेदिरे ॥३॥
3. śivā cāśivasaṁkāśā tasya vaktrātsudāruṇā ,
niṣpapāta mahāghorā smṛtiḥ sā tasya bhārata ,
ulkāśca jvalitāstasya dīptāḥ pārśve prapedire.

3. From his mouth, a very dreadful, inauspicious-looking jackal emerged. His greatly terrifying consciousness (smṛti) departed from him, O Bhārata. Additionally, fiery and bright meteors fell beside him.
गृध्रकङ्कवडाश्चैव वाचोऽमुञ्चन्सुदारुणाः ।
वृत्रस्योपरि संहृष्टाश्चक्रवत्परिबभ्रमुः ॥४॥
4. gṛdhrakaṅkavaḍāścaiva vāco'muñcansudāruṇāḥ ,
vṛtrasyopari saṁhṛṣṭāścakravatparibabhramuḥ.
4. gṛdhrakaṅkavaḍāḥ ca eva vācaḥ amuñcan sudāruṇāḥ
| vṛtrasya upari saṃhṛṣṭāḥ cakravat paribabhramuḥ

4. Vultures, herons, and crows, uttering very dreadful cries, joyfully circled like a wheel above Vṛtra.
ततस्तं रथमास्थाय देवाप्यायितमाहवे ।
वज्रोद्यतकरः शक्रस्तं दैत्यं प्रत्यवैक्षत ॥५॥
5. tatastaṁ rathamāsthāya devāpyāyitamāhave ,
vajrodyatakaraḥ śakrastaṁ daityaṁ pratyavaikṣata.
5. tataḥ tam ratham āsthāya deva āpyāyitam āhave |
vajra udyata karaḥ śakraḥ tam daityam prati avekṣata
5. tataḥ śakraḥ vajra udyata karaḥ devāpyāyitam āhave
tam ratham āsthāya tam daityam prati avekṣata
5. Then, having mounted that chariot which was empowered by the gods for battle, Śakra (Indra), with the thunderbolt raised in his hand, looked intently at that demon.
अमानुषमथो नादं स मुमोच महासुरः ।
व्यजृम्भत च राजेन्द्र तीव्रज्वरसमन्वितः ।
अथास्य जृम्भतः शक्रस्ततो वज्रमवासृजत् ॥६॥
6. amānuṣamatho nādaṁ sa mumoca mahāsuraḥ ,
vyajṛmbhata ca rājendra tīvrajvarasamanvitaḥ ,
athāsya jṛmbhataḥ śakrastato vajramavāsṛjat.
6. amānuṣam atho nādam saḥ mumoca
mahāsuraḥ | vi ajṛmbhata ca rājendra
tīvra jvara samanvitaḥ | atha asya
jṛmbhataḥ śakraḥ tataḥ vajram avāsṛjat
6. atho saḥ mahāsuraḥ amānuṣam nādam
mumoca ca rājendra tīvra jvara
samanvitaḥ vi ajṛmbhata atha asya
jṛmbhataḥ tataḥ śakraḥ vajram avāsṛjat
6. Then that great demon (Vṛtra) let out an inhuman roar. And, O king of kings, he yawned, afflicted with a fierce fever. Thereupon, as he was yawning, Śakra (Indra) released the thunderbolt.
स वज्रः सुमहातेजाः कालाग्निसदृशोपमः ।
क्षिप्रमेव महाकायं वृत्रं दैत्यमपातयत् ॥७॥
7. sa vajraḥ sumahātejāḥ kālāgnisadṛśopamaḥ ,
kṣiprameva mahākāyaṁ vṛtraṁ daityamapātayat.
7. saḥ vajraḥ su mahā tejasaḥ kāla agni sadṛśa upamaḥ
| kṣipram eva mahā kāyam vṛtram daityam apātayat
7. saḥ vajraḥ su mahā tejasaḥ kāla agni sadṛśa upamaḥ

7. That thunderbolt, exceedingly mighty and resembling the fire of cosmic dissolution, quickly brought down the great-bodied demon Vṛtra.
ततो नादः समभवत्पुनरेव समन्ततः ।
वृत्रं विनिहतं दृष्ट्वा देवानां भरतर्षभ ॥८॥
8. tato nādaḥ samabhavatpunareva samantataḥ ,
vṛtraṁ vinihataṁ dṛṣṭvā devānāṁ bharatarṣabha.
8. tataḥ nādaḥ sam abhavat punaḥ eva samantataḥ |
vṛtram vinihatam dṛṣṭvā devānām bharatarṣabha
8. tataḥ punaḥ eva samantataḥ nādaḥ sam abhavat
bharatarṣabha devānām vṛtram vinihatam dṛṣṭvā
8. Then a roar arose again from all sides, O best of Bharatas, as the gods saw Vṛtra slain.
वृत्रं तु हत्वा भगवान्दानवारिर्महायशाः ।
वज्रेण विष्णुयुक्तेन दिवमेव समाविशत् ॥९॥
9. vṛtraṁ tu hatvā bhagavāndānavārirmahāyaśāḥ ,
vajreṇa viṣṇuyuktena divameva samāviśat.
9. vṛtram tu hatvā bhagavān dānavāriḥ mahāyaśāḥ
vajreṇa viṣṇuyuktena divam eva samāviśat
9. bhagavān dānavāriḥ mahāyaśāḥ tu vṛtram hatvā
viṣṇuyuktena vajreṇa divam eva samāviśat
9. But having slain Vṛtra, the glorious lord, foe of the Danavas, ascended to heaven with his thunderbolt (vajra), empowered by Viṣṇu.
अथ वृत्रस्य कौरव्य शरीरादभिनिःसृता ।
ब्रह्महत्या महाघोरा रौद्रा लोकभयावहा ॥१०॥
10. atha vṛtrasya kauravya śarīrādabhiniḥsṛtā ,
brahmahatyā mahāghorā raudrā lokabhayāvahā.
10. atha vṛtrasya kauravya śarīrāt abhiniḥsṛtā
brahmahatyā mahāghorā raudrā lokabhayāvahā
10. atha kauravya vṛtrasya śarīrāt mahāghorā

10. Then, O descendant of Kuru, from Vṛtra's body emerged Brāhmaṇicide (brahmahatyā), which was exceedingly dreadful, fierce, and terrifying to the world.
करालदशना भीमा विकृता कृष्णपिङ्गला ।
प्रकीर्णमूर्धजा चैव घोरनेत्रा च भारत ॥११॥
11. karāladaśanā bhīmā vikṛtā kṛṣṇapiṅgalā ,
prakīrṇamūrdhajā caiva ghoranetrā ca bhārata.
11. karāladaśanā bhīmā vikṛtā kṛṣṇapiṅgalā
prakīrṇamūrdhajā ca eva ghoranetrā ca bhārata
11. bhārata karāladaśanā bhīmā vikṛtā kṛṣṇapiṅgalā

11. It (Brāhmaṇicide) possessed terrifying fangs, was formidable and distorted, with a dark-brown complexion, disheveled hair, and dreadful eyes, O Bhārata.
कपालमालिनी चैव कृशा च भरतर्षभ ।
रुधिरार्द्रा च धर्मज्ञ चीरवस्त्रनिवासिनी ॥१२॥
12. kapālamālinī caiva kṛśā ca bharatarṣabha ,
rudhirārdrā ca dharmajña cīravastranivāsinī.

rudhirārdrā ca dharmajña cīravastranivāsinī
12. bharatarṣabha dharmajña kapālamālinī ca eva

12. It (Brāhmaṇicide) also wore a garland of skulls and was emaciated, drenched in blood, and clad in tattered garments, O bull among Bharatas, O knower of natural law (dharma).
साभिनिष्क्रम्य राजेन्द्र तादृग्रूपा भयावहा ।
वज्रिणं मृगयामास तदा भरतसत्तम ॥१३॥
13. sābhiniṣkramya rājendra tādṛgrūpā bhayāvahā ,
vajriṇaṁ mṛgayāmāsa tadā bharatasattama.
13. sā abhiniṣkramya rājendra tādṛgrūpā bhayāvahā
vajriṇam mṛgayāmāsa tadā bharatasattama
13. rājendra bharatasattama sā abhiniṣkramya
tādṛgrūpā bhayāvahā tadā vajriṇam mṛgayāmāsa
13. Having emerged, O king among kings (rājendra), she, possessing such a terrifying form, then sought out Indra, the wielder of the thunderbolt (vajriṇam), O best of the Bharatas (bharatasattama).
कस्यचित्त्वथ कालस्य वृत्रहा कुरुनन्दन ।
स्वर्गायाभिमुखः प्रायाल्लोकानां हितकाम्यया ॥१४॥
14. kasyacittvatha kālasya vṛtrahā kurunandana ,
svargāyābhimukhaḥ prāyāllokānāṁ hitakāmyayā.
14. kasyacit tu atha kālasya vṛtrahā kurunandana
svargāya abhimukhaḥ prāyāt lokānām hitakāmyayā
14. kurunandana kasyacit tu atha kālasya vṛtrahā
lokānām hitakāmyayā svargāya abhimukhaḥ prāyāt
14. After some time (kasyacit kālasya), O delight of the Kurus (kurunandana), Indra, the slayer of Vṛtra (vṛtrahā), departed towards heaven (svargāya), desiring the welfare of all beings (lokānām hitakāmyayā).
बिसान्निःसरमाणं तु दृष्ट्वा शक्रं महौजसम् ।
कण्ठे जग्राह देवेन्द्रं सुलग्ना चाभवत्तदा ॥१५॥
15. bisānniḥsaramāṇaṁ tu dṛṣṭvā śakraṁ mahaujasam ,
kaṇṭhe jagrāha devendraṁ sulagnā cābhavattadā.
15. bisāt niḥsaramāṇam tu dṛṣṭvā śakram mahaujasam
kaṇṭhe jagrāha devendram sulagnā ca abhavat tadā
15. tu śakram mahaujasam bisāt niḥsaramāṇam dṛṣṭvā sā
(implied) sulagnā abhavat ca tadā devendram kaṇṭhe jagrāha
15. Having seen Indra (śakra), the mighty one (mahaujasam), emerging from the lotus stalks (bisāt niḥsaramāṇam), she (Brahmāhatyā, implied) then firmly clung to the lord of the gods (devendram) and seized him by the neck.
स हि तस्मिन्समुत्पन्ने ब्रह्महत्याकृते भये ।
नलिन्यां बिसमध्यस्थो बभूवाब्दगणान्बहून् ॥१६॥
16. sa hi tasminsamutpanne brahmahatyākṛte bhaye ,
nalinyāṁ bisamadhyastho babhūvābdagaṇānbahūn.
16. saḥ hi tasmin samutpanne brahmahatyākṛte bhaye
nalinyām bisamadhyasthaḥ babhūva abdagaṇān bahūn
16. hi tasmin samutpanne brahmahatyākṛte bhaye saḥ
nalinyām bisamadhyasthaḥ bahūn abdagaṇān babhūva
16. Indeed (hi), when that fear (bhaye), caused by the heinous sin of killing a Brahmin (brahmahatyā), arose (samutpanne) in him (tasmin), he (saḥ) resided (babhūva), staying amidst the lotus stalks (bisamadhyasthaḥ) in a lotus pond (nalinyām), for many (bahūn) years (abdagaṇān).
अनुसृत्य तु यत्नात्स तया वै ब्रह्महत्यया ।
तदा गृहीतः कौरव्य निश्चेष्टः समपद्यत ॥१७॥
17. anusṛtya tu yatnātsa tayā vai brahmahatyayā ,
tadā gṛhītaḥ kauravya niśceṣṭaḥ samapadyata.
17. anusṛtya tu yatnāt saḥ tayā vai brahmahatyayā
tadā gṛhītaḥ kauravya niśceṣṭaḥ samapadyata
17. kauravya tu yatnāt tayā vai brahmahatyayā
anusṛtya saḥ tadā gṛhītaḥ niśceṣṭaḥ samapadyata
17. Indeed, O scion of Kuru, when that sin of killing a Brahmin (brahmahatyā) diligently pursued him, he was then seized by it and became utterly motionless.
तस्या व्यपोहने शक्रः परं यत्नं चकार ह ।
न चाशकत्तां देवेन्द्रो ब्रह्महत्यां व्यपोहितुम् ॥१८॥
18. tasyā vyapohane śakraḥ paraṁ yatnaṁ cakāra ha ,
na cāśakattāṁ devendro brahmahatyāṁ vyapohitum.
18. tasyāḥ vyapohane śakraḥ param yatnam cakāra ha na
ca aśakat tām devendraḥ brahmahatyām vyapohitum
18. śakraḥ tasyāḥ vyapohane param yatnam ha cakāra.
ca devendraḥ tām brahmahatyām vyapohitum na aśakat.
18. Indra (Śakra) indeed made a great effort to dispel that (brahmahatyā), yet the king of the gods (Devendra) was unable to remove that sin of killing a Brahmin (brahmahatyā).
गृहीत एव तु तया देवेन्द्रो भरतर्षभ ।
पितामहमुपागम्य शिरसा प्रत्यपूजयत् ॥१९॥
19. gṛhīta eva tu tayā devendro bharatarṣabha ,
pitāmahamupāgamya śirasā pratyapūjayat.
19. gṛhītaḥ eva tu tayā devendraḥ bharatarṣabha
pitāmaham upāgamya śirasā pratyapūjayat
19. bharatarṣabha,
devendraḥ tu tayā gṛhītaḥ eva pitāmaham upāgamya śirasā pratyapūjayat.
19. Indeed, O best of Bharatas, when the king of the gods (Devendra) was seized by her (brahmahatyā), he approached the Grandfather (Brahmā) and bowed with his head to worship him.
ज्ञात्वा गृहीतं शक्रं तु द्विजप्रवरहत्यया ।
ब्रह्मा संचिन्तयामास तदा भरतसत्तम ॥२०॥
20. jñātvā gṛhītaṁ śakraṁ tu dvijapravarahatyayā ,
brahmā saṁcintayāmāsa tadā bharatasattama.
20. jñātvā gṛhītam śakram tu dvijapravarahatyayā
brahmā sañcintayāmāsa tadā bharatasattama
20. bharatasattama,
tu dvijapravarahatyayā śakram gṛhītam jñātvā brahmā tadā sañcintayāmāsa.
20. O best among the Bharatas, when Brahmā understood that Indra (Śakra) had indeed been seized by the sin of killing the foremost Brahmin, he then began to ponder.
तामुवाच महाबाहो ब्रह्महत्यां पितामहः ।
स्वरेण मधुरेणाथ सान्त्वयन्निव भारत ॥२१॥
21. tāmuvāca mahābāho brahmahatyāṁ pitāmahaḥ ,
svareṇa madhureṇātha sāntvayanniva bhārata.
21. tām uvāca mahābāho brahmahatyām pitāmahaḥ
svareṇa madhureṇa atha sāntvayann iva bhārata
21. bhārata mahābāho atha pitāmahaḥ tām brahmahatyām
madhureṇa svareṇa sāntvayann iva uvāca
21. O mighty-armed one, then the grandfather (Brahmā) addressed that brahmin-killing (brahmahatyā) with a sweet voice, as if consoling her.
मुच्यतां त्रिदशेन्द्रोऽयं मत्प्रियं कुरु भामिनि ।
ब्रूहि किं ते करोम्यद्य कामं कं त्वमिहेच्छसि ॥२२॥
22. mucyatāṁ tridaśendro'yaṁ matpriyaṁ kuru bhāmini ,
brūhi kiṁ te karomyadya kāmaṁ kaṁ tvamihecchasi.
22. mucyatām tridaśendraḥ ayam matpriyam kuru bhāmini |
brūhi kim te karomi adya kāmam kam tvam iha icchasi
22. bhāmini,
ayam tridaśendraḥ mucyatām matpriyam kuru adya te kim karomi,
tvam iha kam kāmam icchasi iti brūhi
22. Let this lord of the gods be freed; O beautiful one, do what is pleasing to me. Tell me, what shall I do for you today? Which desire do you wish for here?
ब्रह्महत्योवाच ।
त्रिलोकपूजिते देवे प्रीते त्रैलोक्यकर्तरि ।
कृतमेवेह मन्येऽहं निवासं तु विधत्स्व मे ॥२३॥
23. brahmahatyovāca ,
trilokapūjite deve prīte trailokyakartari ,
kṛtameveha manye'haṁ nivāsaṁ tu vidhatsva me.
23. brahmahatyā uvāca | trilokapūjite deve prīte trailokyakartari
| kṛtam eva iha manye aham nivāsam tu vidhatsva me
23. brahmahatyā uvāca: trilokapūjite,
trailokyakartari deve prīte sati,
aham iha kṛtam eva manye tu me nivāsam vidhatsva
23. Brahmin-killing (brahmahatyā) said: 'When the God, revered by the three worlds and the creator of the three worlds, is pleased, I consider my request to be as good as fulfilled here. However, you must arrange a dwelling for me.'
त्वया कृतेयं मर्यादा लोकसंरक्षणार्थिना ।
स्थापना वै सुमहती त्वया देव प्रवर्तिता ॥२४॥
24. tvayā kṛteyaṁ maryādā lokasaṁrakṣaṇārthinā ,
sthāpanā vai sumahatī tvayā deva pravartitā.
24. tvayā kṛtā iyam maryādā lokasaṃrakṣaṇārthinā
| sthāpanā vai sumahatī tvayā deva pravartitā
24. lokasaṃrakṣaṇārthinā tvayā iyam maryādā kṛtā deva,
vai tvayā sumahatī sthāpanā pravartitā
24. This boundary was created by you, who desired the protection of the worlds. Indeed, a very great arrangement has been set in motion by you, O God.
प्रीते तु त्वयि धर्मज्ञ सर्वलोकेश्वरे प्रभो ।
शक्रादपगमिष्यामि निवासं तु विधत्स्व मे ॥२५॥
25. prīte tu tvayi dharmajña sarvalokeśvare prabho ,
śakrādapagamiṣyāmi nivāsaṁ tu vidhatsva me.
25. prīte tu tvayi dharmajña sarvalokeśvare prabho
śakrāt apagamiṣyāmi nivāsam tu vidhatsva me
25. prabho dharmajña sarvalokeśvare tvayi prīte tu
(sati) śakrāt apagamiṣyāmi me nivāsam tu vidhatsva
25. O Lord (prabho), Knower of (natural) law (dharma), Lord of all worlds! When you are pleased, I will indeed leave Indra's abode; therefore, please arrange a dwelling for me.
भीष्म उवाच ।
तथेति तां प्राह तदा ब्रह्महत्यां पितामहः ।
उपायतः स शक्रस्य ब्रह्महत्यां व्यपोहत ॥२६॥
26. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tatheti tāṁ prāha tadā brahmahatyāṁ pitāmahaḥ ,
upāyataḥ sa śakrasya brahmahatyāṁ vyapohata.
26. bhīṣma uvāca tathā iti tām prāha tadā brahmahatyām
pitāmahaḥ upāyataḥ sa śakrasya brahmahatyām vyapohat
26. bhīṣma uvāca tadā pitāmahaḥ tām brahmahatyām 'tathā'
iti prāha sa upāyataḥ śakrasya brahmahatyām vyapohat
26. Bhishma said: "Then the Grandsire (pitāmaha) said to her, the Brahmahatyā, 'So be it.' He then skillfully removed Indra's sin of Brahmin-killing (brahmahatyā)."
ततः स्वयंभुवा ध्यातस्तत्र वह्निर्महात्मना ।
ब्रह्माणमुपसंगम्य ततो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२७॥
27. tataḥ svayaṁbhuvā dhyātastatra vahnirmahātmanā ,
brahmāṇamupasaṁgamya tato vacanamabravīt.
27. tataḥ svayambhuvā dhyātaḥ tatra vahniḥ mahātmanā
brahmāṇam upasaṅgamya tataḥ vacanam abravīt
27. tataḥ mahātmanā svayambhuvā vahniḥ tatra dhyātaḥ (āsīt)
(saḥ vahniḥ) brahmāṇam upasaṅgamya tataḥ vacanam abravīt
27. Then, Agni (Vahni) was invoked there by the great-souled Self-born (Svayambhū, Brahmā). Having approached Brahmā, he then spoke these words.
प्राप्तोऽस्मि भगवन्देव त्वत्सकाशमरिंदम ।
यत्कर्तव्यं मया देव तद्भवान्वक्तुमर्हति ॥२८॥
28. prāpto'smi bhagavandeva tvatsakāśamariṁdama ,
yatkartavyaṁ mayā deva tadbhavānvaktumarhati.
28. prāptaḥ asmi bhagavan deva tvatsakāśam arindama
yat kartavyam mayā deva tat bhavān vaktum arhati
28. arindama deva bhagavan,
(aham) tvatsakāśam prāptaḥ asmi deva,
mayā yat kartavyam,
tat bhavān vaktum arhati
28. O divine Lord (bhagavan), conqueror of enemies (arindama)! I have arrived in your presence. O divine one (deva), you should speak of what duty is to be performed by me.
ब्रह्मोवाच ।
बहुधा विभजिष्यामि ब्रह्महत्यामिमामहम् ।
शक्रस्याद्य विमोक्षार्थं चतुर्भागं प्रतीच्छ मे ॥२९॥
29. brahmovāca ,
bahudhā vibhajiṣyāmi brahmahatyāmimāmaham ,
śakrasyādya vimokṣārthaṁ caturbhāgaṁ pratīccha me.
29. brahmā uvāca bahudhā vibhajiṣyāmi brahmahatyām imām aham
śakrasya adya vimokṣārtham caturbhāgam pratīccha me
29. brahmā uvāca aham imām brahmahatyām bahudhā vibhajiṣyāmi
adya śakrasya vimokṣārtham me caturbhāgam pratīccha
29. Brahmā said, "I will now divide this sin of brahminicide (brahmahatyā) in various ways for Indra's liberation (vimokṣa). Please accept a quarter share from me."
अग्निरुवाच ।
मम मोक्षस्य कोऽन्तो वै ब्रह्मन्ध्यायस्व वै प्रभो ।
एतदिच्छामि विज्ञातुं तत्त्वतो लोकपूजित ॥३०॥
30. agniruvāca ,
mama mokṣasya ko'nto vai brahmandhyāyasva vai prabho ,
etadicchāmi vijñātuṁ tattvato lokapūjita.
30. agniḥ uvāca mama mokṣasya kaḥ antaḥ vai brahman dhyāyasva
vai prabho etat icchāmi vijñātum tattvataḥ lokapūjita
30. agniḥ uvāca he brahman he prabho he lokapūjita mama mokṣasya kaḥ antaḥ vai? vai dhyāyasva.
aham etat tattvataḥ vijñātum icchāmi.
30. Agni said, "What indeed is the limit of my liberation (mokṣa), O Brahmā? O Lord, please do consider this. O you who are revered by the worlds, I truly wish to understand this."
ब्रह्मोवाच ।
यस्त्वां ज्वलन्तमासाद्य स्वयं वै मानवः क्वचित् ।
बीजौषधिरसैर्वह्ने न यक्ष्यति तमोवृतः ॥३१॥
31. brahmovāca ,
yastvāṁ jvalantamāsādya svayaṁ vai mānavaḥ kvacit ,
bījauṣadhirasairvahne na yakṣyati tamovṛtaḥ.
31. brahmā uvāca yaḥ tvām jvalantam āsādya svayam vai mānavaḥ
kvacit bījauṣadhirasaiḥ vahne na yakṣyati tamovṛtaḥ
31. brahmā uvāca he vahne yaḥ mānavaḥ kvacit tamovṛtaḥ svayam
jvalantam tvām āsādya bījauṣadhirasaiḥ na yakṣyati
31. Brahmā said, "O Agni, if ever a human being, enveloped by ignorance, approaches you who are blazing, and does not perform a Vedic ritual (yajña) with offerings of seed and herb essences for you - "
तमेषा यास्यति क्षिप्रं तत्रैव च निवत्स्यति ।
ब्रह्महत्या हव्यवाह व्येतु ते मानसो ज्वरः ॥३२॥
32. tameṣā yāsyati kṣipraṁ tatraiva ca nivatsyati ,
brahmahatyā havyavāha vyetu te mānaso jvaraḥ.
32. tam eṣā yāsyati kṣipram tatra eva ca nivatsyati
brahmahatyā havyavāha vyetu te mānasaḥ jvaraḥ
32. eṣā brahmahatyā kṣipram tam yāsyati ca tatra eva nivatsyati.
he havyavāha te mānasaḥ jvaraḥ vyetu.
32. This very brahminicide (brahmahatyā) will swiftly go to that man and reside there. O Havyavāha (Agni), let your mental distress (jvara) depart.
भीष्म उवाच ।
इत्युक्तः प्रतिजग्राह तद्वचो हव्यकव्यभुक् ।
पितामहस्य भगवांस्तथा च तदभूत्प्रभो ॥३३॥
33. bhīṣma uvāca ,
ityuktaḥ pratijagrāha tadvaco havyakavyabhuk ,
pitāmahasya bhagavāṁstathā ca tadabhūtprabho.
33. bhīṣma uvāca iti uktaḥ pratijagrāha tat vacaḥ havyakavyabhuk
pitāmahasya bhagavān tathā ca tat abhūt prabho
33. bhīṣma uvāca prabho iti uktaḥ bhagavān havyakavyabhuk
pitāmahasya tat vacaḥ pratijagrāha tathā ca tat abhūt
33. Bhishma said: Thus addressed, the venerable fire god, who consumes offerings to gods and ancestors (havyakavyabhuk), accepted that statement of the Grandfather (Brahmā), and so, O Lord, it came to pass.
ततो वृक्षौषधितृणं समाहूय पितामहः ।
इममर्थं महाराज वक्तुं समुपचक्रमे ॥३४॥
34. tato vṛkṣauṣadhitṛṇaṁ samāhūya pitāmahaḥ ,
imamarthaṁ mahārāja vaktuṁ samupacakrame.
34. tataḥ vṛkṣauṣadhitṛṇam samāhūya pitāmahaḥ
imam artham mahārāja vaktum samupacakrame
34. tataḥ pitāmahaḥ vṛkṣauṣadhitṛṇam samāhūya,
mahārāja,
imam artham vaktum samupacakrame
34. Then, having summoned the trees, herbs, and grasses, the Grandfather (Brahmā) began, O great king, to speak about this matter.
ततो वृक्षौषधितृणं तथैवोक्तं यथातथम् ।
व्यथितं वह्निवद्राजन्ब्रह्माणमिदमब्रवीत् ॥३५॥
35. tato vṛkṣauṣadhitṛṇaṁ tathaivoktaṁ yathātatham ,
vyathitaṁ vahnivadrājanbrahmāṇamidamabravīt.
35. tataḥ vṛkṣauṣadhitṛṇam tathā eva uktam yathātatham
vyathitam vahnivat rājan brahmāṇam idam abravīt
35. tataḥ rājan,
tathā eva yathātatham uktam,
vahnivat vyathitam vṛkṣauṣadhitṛṇam idam brahmāṇam abravīt
35. Then, O king, the trees, herbs, and grasses, having been addressed truly and precisely, and distressed as if on fire, spoke this to Brahmā.
अस्माकं ब्रह्महत्यातो कोऽन्तो लोकपितामह ।
स्वभावनिहतानस्मान्न पुनर्हन्तुमर्हसि ॥३६॥
36. asmākaṁ brahmahatyāto ko'nto lokapitāmaha ,
svabhāvanihatānasmānna punarhantumarhasi.
36. asmākam brahmahatyātaḥ kaḥ antaḥ lokapitāmaha
svabhāva nihatān asmān na punaḥ hantum arhasi
36. lokapitāmaha,
asmākam brahmahatyātaḥ kaḥ antaḥ? svabhāvanihatān asmān punaḥ hantum na arhasi
36. “O Grandfather of the worlds, what is the end for us from the sin of brahmin-killing (brahmahatyā)? You ought not to kill us again, us who are already inherently prone to death by our very intrinsic nature (svabhāva).”
वयमग्निं तथा शीतं वर्षं च पवनेरितम् ।
सहामः सततं देव तथा छेदनभेदनम् ॥३७॥
37. vayamagniṁ tathā śītaṁ varṣaṁ ca pavaneritam ,
sahāmaḥ satataṁ deva tathā chedanabhedanam.
37. vayam agnim tathā śītam varṣam ca pavana īritam
sahāmaḥ satatam deva tathā chedanabhedanam
37. deva vayam agnim tathā śītam ca pavana īritam
varṣam tathā chedanabhedanam satatam sahāmaḥ
37. O Lord, we constantly endure fire, as well as cold, and rain driven by the wind; likewise, we endure cutting and splitting.
ब्रह्महत्यामिमामद्य भवतः शासनाद्वयम् ।
ग्रहीष्यामस्त्रिलोकेश मोक्षं चिन्तयतां भवान् ॥३८॥
38. brahmahatyāmimāmadya bhavataḥ śāsanādvayam ,
grahīṣyāmastrilokeśa mokṣaṁ cintayatāṁ bhavān.
38. brahmahatyām imām adya bhavataḥ śāsanāt vayam
grahīṣyāmaḥ trilokeśa mokṣam cintayatām bhavān
38. trilokeśa adya vayam bhavataḥ śāsanāt imām
brahmahatyām grahīṣyāmaḥ bhavān mokṣam cintayatām
38. O Lord of the three worlds, by your command, we shall now accept this sin of Brahman-slaying. May you (Lord) consider (our) liberation (mokṣa).
ब्रह्मोवाच ।
पर्वकाले तु संप्राप्ते यो वै छेदनभेदनम् ।
करिष्यति नरो मोहात्तमेषानुगमिष्यति ॥३९॥
39. brahmovāca ,
parvakāle tu saṁprāpte yo vai chedanabhedanam ,
kariṣyati naro mohāttameṣānugamiṣyati.
39. brahmā uvāca parvakāle tu samprāpte yaḥ vai
chedanabhedanam kariṣyati naraḥ mohāt tam eṣā anugamiṣyati

39. Brahma said: 'Indeed, when a sacred occasion (parvakāla) has arrived, any person who, out of delusion (moha), performs cutting and splitting – this (sin or consequence) will assuredly follow him.'
भीष्म उवाच ।
ततो वृक्षौषधितृणमेवमुक्तं महात्मना ।
ब्रह्माणमभिसंपूज्य जगामाशु यथागतम् ॥४०॥
40. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tato vṛkṣauṣadhitṛṇamevamuktaṁ mahātmanā ,
brahmāṇamabhisaṁpūjya jagāmāśu yathāgatam.
40. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca tataḥ vṛkṣa-auṣadhi-tṛṇam evam uktam
mahātmanā brahmāṇam abhisaṃpūjya jagāma āśu yathāgatam
40. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca tataḥ mahātmanā evam uktam vṛkṣa-auṣadhi-tṛṇam
brahmāṇam abhisaṃpūjya āśu yathāgatam jagāma
40. Bhishma said: 'Then, after the aggregate of trees, herbs, and grasses had been thus addressed by the great soul (Brahma), it (the aggregate) worshipped Brahma and quickly returned from whence it came.'
आहूयाप्सरसो देवस्ततो लोकपितामहः ।
वाचा मधुरया प्राह सान्त्वयन्निव भारत ॥४१॥
41. āhūyāpsaraso devastato lokapitāmahaḥ ,
vācā madhurayā prāha sāntvayanniva bhārata.
41. āhūya apsarasaḥ devaḥ tataḥ lokapitāmahaḥ
vācā madhurayā prāha sāntvayann iva bhārata
41. bhārata tataḥ devaḥ lokapitāmahaḥ apsarasaḥ
āhūya madhurayā vācā sāntvayann iva prāha
41. O Bhārata, then the god, the grandfather of the worlds (Brahmā), having called the Apsarasas, spoke with sweet words, as if consoling them.
इयमिन्द्रादनुप्राप्ता ब्रह्महत्या वराङ्गनाः ।
चतुर्थमस्या भागं हि मयोक्ताः संप्रतीच्छत ॥४२॥
42. iyamindrādanuprāptā brahmahatyā varāṅganāḥ ,
caturthamasyā bhāgaṁ hi mayoktāḥ saṁpratīcchata.
42. iyam indrāt anuprāptā brahmahatyā varāṅganāḥ
caturtham asyāḥ bhāgam hi mayā uktāḥ saṃpratīcchata
42. varāṅganāḥ iyam brahmahatyā indrāt anuprāptā mayā
uktāḥ hi asyāḥ caturtham bhāgam saṃpratīcchata
42. O excellent ladies, this sin of brahminicide (brahmahatyā) has come from Indra. As I have instructed you, indeed accept its fourth share.
अप्सरस ऊचुः ।
ग्रहणे कृतबुद्धीनां देवेश तव शासनात् ।
मोक्षं समयतोऽस्माकं चिन्तयस्व पितामह ॥४३॥
43. apsarasa ūcuḥ ,
grahaṇe kṛtabuddhīnāṁ deveśa tava śāsanāt ,
mokṣaṁ samayato'smākaṁ cintayasva pitāmaha.
43. apsarasaḥ ūcuḥ grahaṇe kṛtabuddhīnām deveśa tava
śāsanāt mokṣam samayataḥ asmākam cintayasva pitāmaha
43. apsarasaḥ ūcuḥ deveśa pitāmaha,
tava śāsanāt grahaṇe kṛtabuddhīnām asmākam samayataḥ mokṣam cintayasva
43. The Apsarasas said: 'O Lord of gods, O Grandfather, as our minds are resolved to accept [it] by your command, please consider our liberation (mokṣa) according to the agreement.'
ब्रह्मोवाच ।
रजस्वलासु नारीषु यो वै मैथुनमाचरेत् ।
तमेषा यास्यति क्षिप्रं व्येतु वो मानसो ज्वरः ॥४४॥
44. brahmovāca ,
rajasvalāsu nārīṣu yo vai maithunamācaret ,
tameṣā yāsyati kṣipraṁ vyetu vo mānaso jvaraḥ.
44. brahmā uvāca rajasvalāsu नारीषु yaḥ vai maithunam
ācaret tam eṣā yāsyati kṣipram vyetu vaḥ mānasaḥ jvaraḥ
44. brahmā uvāca yaḥ vai rajasvalāsu nārīṣu maithunam
ācaret eṣā tam kṣipram yāsyati vaḥ mānasaḥ jvaraḥ vyetu
44. Brahmā said: 'Whoever indeed engages in sexual intercourse with menstruating women - to him this [sin] will quickly go. Let your mental anguish depart.'
भीष्म उवाच ।
तथेति हृष्टमनस उक्त्वाथाप्सरसां गणाः ।
स्वानि स्थानानि संप्राप्य रेमिरे भरतर्षभ ॥४५॥
45. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tatheti hṛṣṭamanasa uktvāthāpsarasāṁ gaṇāḥ ,
svāni sthānāni saṁprāpya remire bharatarṣabha.
45. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca tathā iti hṛṣṭamanasaḥ uktvā atha apsarasām
gaṇāḥ svāni sthānāni saṃprāpya remire bharatarṣabha
45. bharatarṣabha bhīṣmaḥ uvāca apsarasām gaṇāḥ hṛṣṭamanasaḥ
tathā iti uktvā atha svāni sthānāni saṃprāpya remire
45. Bhishma said: Having thus responded, "So be it," the hosts of Apsaras, with joyful hearts, then returned to their own abodes and sported there, O best among the Bharatas.
ततस्त्रिलोककृद्देवः पुनरेव महातपाः ।
अपः संचिन्तयामास ध्यातास्ताश्चाप्यथागमन् ॥४६॥
46. tatastrilokakṛddevaḥ punareva mahātapāḥ ,
apaḥ saṁcintayāmāsa dhyātāstāścāpyathāgaman.
46. tataḥ trilokakṛt devaḥ punar eva mahātapāḥ apaḥ
saṃcintayāmāsa dhyātāḥ tāḥ ca api atha āgaman
46. tataḥ trilokakṛt devaḥ mahātapāḥ punar eva apaḥ
saṃcintayāmāsa ca dhyātāḥ tāḥ api atha āgaman
46. Then, that divine being, the creator of the three worlds and one of great ascetic power (tapas), once more concentrated his mind upon the waters. And as soon as he had meditated upon them, they immediately manifested.
तास्तु सर्वाः समागम्य ब्रह्माणममितौजसम् ।
इदमूचुर्वचो राजन्प्रणिपत्य पितामहम् ॥४७॥
47. tāstu sarvāḥ samāgamya brahmāṇamamitaujasam ,
idamūcurvaco rājanpraṇipatya pitāmaham.
47. tāḥ tu sarvāḥ samāgamya brahmāṇam amitaujasam
idam ūcuḥ vacaḥ rājan praṇipatya pitāmaham
47. rājan tāḥ sarvāḥ tu samāgamya amitaujasam
pitāmaham brahmāṇam praṇipatya idam vacaḥ ūcuḥ
47. O King, all those waters, having assembled and bowed down to the Grandfather (pitāmaha), Brahma, who possesses immeasurable splendor, then spoke these words to him.
इमाः स्म देव संप्राप्तास्त्वत्सकाशमरिंदम ।
शासनात्तव देवेश समाज्ञापय नो विभो ॥४८॥
48. imāḥ sma deva saṁprāptāstvatsakāśamariṁdama ,
śāsanāttava deveśa samājñāpaya no vibho.
48. imāḥ sma deva saṃprāptāḥ tvat sakāśam ariṃdama
śāsanāt tava deveśa samājñāpaya naḥ vibho
48. deva ariṃdama vibho deveśa imāḥ sma tvat
sakāśam saṃprāptāḥ tava śāsanāt naḥ samājñāpaya
48. O God, O vanquisher of foes, we have arrived in your presence. By your command, O Lord of Gods, O all-pervading one, please instruct us.
ब्रह्मोवाच ।
इयं वृत्रादनुप्राप्ता पुरुहूतं महाभया ।
ब्रह्महत्या चतुर्थांशमस्या यूयं प्रतीच्छत ॥४९॥
49. brahmovāca ,
iyaṁ vṛtrādanuprāptā puruhūtaṁ mahābhayā ,
brahmahatyā caturthāṁśamasyā yūyaṁ pratīcchata.
49. brahma uvāca | iyaṃ vṛtrāt anuprāptā puruhūtaṃ mahābhayā
| brahmahatyā caturthāṃśam asyāḥ yūyaṃ pratīcchata
49. brahma uvāca iyaṃ mahābhayā brahmahatyā vṛtrāt
puruhūtaṃ anuprāptā yūyaṃ asyāḥ caturthāṃśam pratīcchata
49. Brahmā said: "This sin of killing a brahmin (brahmahatyā), which has befallen Puruhūta (Indra) from Vṛtra and is a great terror, you all must accept a fourth part of it."
आप ऊचुः ।
एवं भवतु लोकेश यथा वदसि नः प्रभो ।
मोक्षं समयतोऽस्माकं संचिन्तयितुमर्हसि ॥५०॥
50. āpa ūcuḥ ,
evaṁ bhavatu lokeśa yathā vadasi naḥ prabho ,
mokṣaṁ samayato'smākaṁ saṁcintayitumarhasi.
50. āpaḥ ūcuḥ | evaṃ bhavatu lokeśa yathā vadasi naḥ
prabho | mokṣaṃ samayataḥ asmākaṃ saṃcintayitum arhasi
50. āpaḥ ūcuḥ lokeśa prabho,
yathā naḥ vadasi evaṃ bhavatu asmākaṃ mokṣaṃ samayataḥ saṃcintayitum arhasi
50. The Waters said: "Lord of the worlds, our Lord, let it be as you say. You should kindly consider a means for our liberation (mokṣa) in due course."
त्वं हि देवेश सर्वस्य जगतः परमो गुरुः ।
कोऽन्यः प्रसादो हि भवेद्यः कृच्छ्रान्नः समुद्धरेत् ॥५१॥
51. tvaṁ hi deveśa sarvasya jagataḥ paramo guruḥ ,
ko'nyaḥ prasādo hi bhavedyaḥ kṛcchrānnaḥ samuddharet.
51. tvaṃ hi deveśa sarvasya jagataḥ paramaḥ guruḥ | kaḥ
anyaḥ prasādaḥ hi bhavet yaḥ kṛcchrāt naḥ samuddharet
51. deveśa,
tvaṃ hi sarvasya jagataḥ paramaḥ guruḥ kaḥ anyaḥ prasādaḥ hi bhavet yaḥ naḥ kṛcchrāt samuddharet
51. Indeed, you are the Lord of the gods (deveśa), the supreme teacher (guru) of the entire world. Who else, by whose grace, could rescue us from this difficulty?
ब्रह्मोवाच ।
अल्पा इति मतिं कृत्वा यो नरो बुद्धिमोहितः ।
श्लेष्ममूत्रपुरीषाणि युष्मासु प्रतिमोक्ष्यति ॥५२॥
52. brahmovāca ,
alpā iti matiṁ kṛtvā yo naro buddhimohitaḥ ,
śleṣmamūtrapurīṣāṇi yuṣmāsu pratimokṣyati.
52. brahma uvāca | alpāḥ iti matiṃ kṛtvā yaḥ naraḥ
buddhimohitaḥ | śleṣmamūtrapurīṣāṇi yuṣmāsu pratimokṣyati
52. brahma uvāca yaḥ buddhimohitaḥ naraḥ (yuṣmān) alpāḥ iti
matiṃ kṛtvā yuṣmāsu śleṣmamūtrapurīṣāṇi pratimokṣyati
52. Brahmā said: "Any man who, deluded in intellect, considers you (waters) to be insignificant, and then discharges phlegm, urine, and feces into you..."
तमेषा यास्यति क्षिप्रं तत्रैव च निवत्स्यति ।
तथा वो भविता मोक्ष इति सत्यं ब्रवीमि वः ॥५३॥
53. tameṣā yāsyati kṣipraṁ tatraiva ca nivatsyati ,
tathā vo bhavitā mokṣa iti satyaṁ bravīmi vaḥ.
53. tam eṣā yāsyati kṣipram tatra eva ca nivatsyati
| tathā vaḥ bhavitā mokṣaḥ iti satyam bravīmi vaḥ
53. eṣā tam kṣipram yāsyati ca tatra eva nivatsyati
tathā vaḥ mokṣaḥ bhavitā iti satyam vaḥ bravīmi
53. She will quickly go to him and reside there. Thus, your liberation (mokṣa) will occur. This truth I tell you.
भीष्म उवाच ।
ततो विमुच्य देवेन्द्रं ब्रह्महत्या युधिष्ठिर ।
यथानिसृष्टं तं देशमगच्छद्देवशासनात् ॥५४॥
54. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tato vimucya devendraṁ brahmahatyā yudhiṣṭhira ,
yathānisṛṣṭaṁ taṁ deśamagacchaddevaśāsanāt.
54. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca | tataḥ vimucya devendram brahmahatyā
yudhiṣṭhira | yathānisr̥ṣṭam tam deśam agacchat devaśāsanāt
54. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca yudhiṣṭhira,
tataḥ brahmahatyā devendram vimucya,
devaśāsanāt yathānisr̥ṣṭam tam deśam agacchat
54. Bhishma said: "Then, O Yudhishthira, the sin of Brahmin-killing (brahmahatyā), having released the king of gods (Indra), went to that place designated for it, by the command of the gods."
एवं शक्रेण संप्राप्ता ब्रह्महत्या जनाधिप ।
पितामहमनुज्ञाप्य सोऽश्वमेधमकल्पयत् ॥५५॥
55. evaṁ śakreṇa saṁprāptā brahmahatyā janādhipa ,
pitāmahamanujñāpya so'śvamedhamakalpayat.
55. evam śakreṇa samprāptā brahmahatyā janādhipa
| pitāmaham anujñāpya saḥ aśvamedham akalpayat

55. Thus, O king (janādhipa), the sin of Brahmin-killing (brahmahatyā) was incurred by Shakra (Indra). Having obtained permission from his grandfather (Brahma), he then performed an Ashwamedha (Vedic ritual, yajña).
श्रूयते हि महाराज संप्राप्ता वासवेन वै ।
ब्रह्महत्या ततः शुद्धिं हयमेधेन लब्धवान् ॥५६॥
56. śrūyate hi mahārāja saṁprāptā vāsavena vai ,
brahmahatyā tataḥ śuddhiṁ hayamedhena labdhavān.

brahmahatyā tataḥ śuddhim hayamedhena labdhavān
56. mahārāja,
hi śrūyate vāsavena vai brahmahatyā samprāptā tataḥ [saḥ] hayamedhena śuddhim labdhavān
56. Indeed, O great king (mahārāja), it is heard that the sin of Brahmin-killing (brahmahatyā) was incurred by Vasava (Indra). Thereafter, he attained purification through the Ashwamedha (Vedic ritual, yajña).
समवाप्य श्रियं देवो हत्वारींश्च सहस्रशः ।
प्रहर्षमतुलं लेभे वासवः पृथिवीपते ॥५७॥
57. samavāpya śriyaṁ devo hatvārīṁśca sahasraśaḥ ,
praharṣamatulaṁ lebhe vāsavaḥ pṛthivīpate.
57. samavāpya śriyam devaḥ hatvā arīn ca sahasraśaḥ
praharṣam atulam lebhe vāsavaḥ pṛthivīpate
57. pṛthivīpate devaḥ vāsavaḥ śriyam samavāpya ca
sahasraśaḥ arīn hatvā atulam praharṣam lebhe
57. O lord of the earth, the deity Indra, having attained great glory and having slain thousands of enemies, experienced unparalleled joy.
वृत्रस्य रुधिराच्चैव खुखुण्डाः पार्थ जज्ञिरे ।
द्विजातिभिरभक्ष्यास्ते दीक्षितैश्च तपोधनैः ॥५८॥
58. vṛtrasya rudhirāccaiva khukhuṇḍāḥ pārtha jajñire ,
dvijātibhirabhakṣyāste dīkṣitaiśca tapodhanaiḥ.
58. vṛtrasya rudhirāt ca eva khukhuṇḍāḥ pārtha jajñire
dvijātibhiḥ abhakṣyāḥ te dīkṣitaiḥ ca tapodhanaiḥ
58. pārtha vṛtrasya rudhirāt ca eva khukhuṇḍāḥ jajñire
te dvijātibhiḥ dīkṣitaiḥ ca tapodhanaiḥ abhakṣyāḥ
58. O Pārtha, indeed, Khukhuṇḍās were born from the blood of Vṛtra. They are not to be eaten by the twice-born (dvijāti), nor by those initiated into Vedic rituals, nor by ascetics (tapodhana).
सर्वावस्थं त्वमप्येषां द्विजातीनां प्रियं कुरु ।
इमे हि भूतले देवाः प्रथिताः कुरुनन्दन ॥५९॥
59. sarvāvasthaṁ tvamapyeṣāṁ dvijātīnāṁ priyaṁ kuru ,
ime hi bhūtale devāḥ prathitāḥ kurunandana.
59. sarvāvastham tvam api eṣām dvijātīnām priyam
kuru ime hi bhūtale devāḥ prathitāḥ kurunandana
59. kurunandana tvam api eṣām dvijātīnām sarvāvastham
priyam kuru hi ime bhūtale prathitāḥ devāḥ
59. O delight of the Kurus (kurunandana), you should always act favorably towards these twice-born (dvijāti). For indeed, these are renowned as gods on earth.
एवं शक्रेण कौरव्य बुद्धिसौक्ष्म्यान्महासुरः ।
उपायपूर्वं निहतो वृत्रोऽथामिततेजसा ॥६०॥
60. evaṁ śakreṇa kauravya buddhisaukṣmyānmahāsuraḥ ,
upāyapūrvaṁ nihato vṛtro'thāmitatejasā.
60. evam śakreṇa kauravya buddhisaūkṣmyāt mahāsuraḥ
upāyapūrvam nihataḥ vṛtraḥ atha amitatejasā
60. kauravya evam śakreṇa amitatejasā buddhisaūkṣmyāt
upāyapūrvam mahāsuraḥ vṛtraḥ atha nihataḥ
60. O descendant of Kuru, in this manner, the great Asura Vṛtra was slain by Indra, who, with subtle intelligence and immeasurable power, employed a pre-planned stratagem (upāya).
एवं त्वमपि कौरव्य पृथिव्यामपराजितः ।
भविष्यसि यथा देवः शतक्रतुरमित्रहा ॥६१॥
61. evaṁ tvamapi kauravya pṛthivyāmaparājitaḥ ,
bhaviṣyasi yathā devaḥ śatakraturamitrahā.
61. evam tvam api kauravya pṛthivyām aparājitaḥ
bhaviṣyasi yathā devaḥ śatakratuḥ amitrahā
61. kauravya tvam api evam pṛthivyām aparājitaḥ
bhaviṣyasi yathā devaḥ śatakratuḥ amitrahā
61. Thus, you too, O scion of Kuru, will be unconquered on earth, just like the god Śatakratu (Indra), the slayer of enemies.
ये तु शक्रकथां दिव्यामिमां पर्वसु पर्वसु ।
विप्रमध्ये पठिष्यन्ति न ते प्राप्स्यन्ति किल्बिषम् ॥६२॥
62. ye tu śakrakathāṁ divyāmimāṁ parvasu parvasu ,
vipramadhye paṭhiṣyanti na te prāpsyanti kilbiṣam.
62. ye tu śakrakathām divyām imām parvasu parvasu
vipramadhye paṭhiṣyanti na te prāpsyanti kilbiṣam
62. ye tu imām divyām śakrakathām parvasu parvasu
vipramadhye paṭhiṣyanti te kilbiṣam na prāpsyanti
62. But those who recite this divine story of Indra on every festive occasion among Brahmins, they will not incur sin.
इत्येतद्वृत्रमाश्रित्य शक्रस्यात्यद्भुतं महत् ।
कथितं कर्म ते तात किं भूयः श्रोतुमिच्छसि ॥६३॥
63. ityetadvṛtramāśritya śakrasyātyadbhutaṁ mahat ,
kathitaṁ karma te tāta kiṁ bhūyaḥ śrotumicchasi.
63. iti etat vṛtram āśritya śakrasya ati adbhutam mahat
kathitam karma te tāta kim bhūyaḥ śrotum icchasi
63. tāta iti etat vṛtram āśritya śakrasya ati adbhutam
mahat karma te kathitam kim bhūyaḥ śrotum icchasi
63. Thus, this extremely wonderful and great deed (karma) of Indra, concerning Vṛtra, has been narrated to you, O dear one. What more do you wish to hear?
