वैशंपायन उवाच ।
कर्णस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा राजा दुर्योधनस्तदा ।
हृष्टो भूत्वा पुनर्दीन इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
karṇasya vacanaṁ śrutvā rājā duryodhanastadā ,
hṛṣṭo bhūtvā punardīna idaṁ vacanamabravīt.
1. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca karṇasya vacanam śrutvā rājā duryodhanaḥ
tadā hṛṣṭaḥ bhūtvā punar dīnaḥ idam vacanam abravīt
1. Vaiśampāyana said: Having heard Karna's words, King Duryodhana was initially delighted, but then became dejected again and spoke these words.
ब्रवीषि यदिदं कर्ण सर्वं मे मनसि स्थितम् ।
न त्वभ्यनुज्ञां लप्स्यामि गमने यत्र पाण्डवाः ॥२॥
2. bravīṣi yadidaṁ karṇa sarvaṁ me manasi sthitam ,
na tvabhyanujñāṁ lapsyāmi gamane yatra pāṇḍavāḥ.
2. bravīṣi yat idam karṇa sarvam me manasi sthitam
na tu abhyanujñām lapsyāmi gamane yatra pāṇḍavāḥ
2. O Karna, what you are saying is all in my mind. However, I will not obtain permission to go where the Pandavas are.
परिदेवति तान्वीरान्धृतराष्ट्रो महीपतिः ।
मन्यतेऽभ्यधिकांश्चापि तपोयोगेन पाण्डवान् ॥३॥
3. paridevati tānvīrāndhṛtarāṣṭro mahīpatiḥ ,
manyate'bhyadhikāṁścāpi tapoyogena pāṇḍavān.
3. paridevayati tān vīrān dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ mahīpatiḥ
manyate abhyadhikān ca api tapoyogena pāṇḍavān
3. King Dhritarashtra laments those heroes, and he even considers the Pandavas superior due to their ascetic practice (tapas) and spiritual discipline (yoga).
अथ वाप्यनुबुध्येत नृपोऽस्माकं चिकीर्षितम् ।
एवमप्यायतिं रक्षन्नाभ्यनुज्ञातुमर्हति ॥४॥
4. atha vāpyanubudhyeta nṛpo'smākaṁ cikīrṣitam ,
evamapyāyatiṁ rakṣannābhyanujñātumarhati.
4. atha vā api anubudhyeta nṛpaḥ asmākam cikīrṣitam
evam api āyatim rakṣan na abhyanujñātum arhati
4. Even if the king were to discover our intention, he still ought not to grant permission, prioritizing the protection of the future.
न हि द्वैतवने किंचिद्विद्यतेऽन्यत्प्रयोजनम् ।
उत्सादनमृते तेषां वनस्थानां मम द्विषाम् ॥५॥
5. na hi dvaitavane kiṁcidvidyate'nyatprayojanam ,
utsādanamṛte teṣāṁ vanasthānāṁ mama dviṣām.
5. na hi dvaitavane kiñcit vidyate anyat prayojanam
utsādanam ṛte teṣām vanasthānām mama dviṣām
5. Indeed, there is no other purpose for me in the Dwaitavana forest except the destruction of those enemies of mine who reside there.
जानासि हि यथा क्षत्ता द्यूतकाल उपस्थिते ।
अब्रवीद्यच्च मां त्वां च सौबलं च वचस्तदा ॥६॥
6. jānāsi hi yathā kṣattā dyūtakāla upasthite ,
abravīdyacca māṁ tvāṁ ca saubalaṁ ca vacastadā.
6. jānāsi hi yathā kṣattā dyūtakāle upasthite
abravīt yat ca mām tvām ca saubalam ca vacaḥ tadā
6. Indeed, you know how Vidura spoke when the time of the dice game arrived, and the words he then said to me, to you, and to Saubala (Śakuni).
तानि पूर्वाणि वाक्यानि यच्चान्यत्परिदेवितम् ।
विचिन्त्य नाधिगच्छामि गमनायेतराय वा ॥७॥
7. tāni pūrvāṇi vākyāni yaccānyatparidevitam ,
vicintya nādhigacchāmi gamanāyetarāya vā.
7. tāni pūrvāṇi vākyāni yat ca anyat paridevitam
vicintya na adhigacchāmi gamanāya itarāya vā
7. Having reflected on those previous statements and all other complaints, I find no valid reason for either going or staying.
ममापि हि महान्हर्षो यदहं भीमफल्गुनौ ।
क्लिष्टावरण्ये पश्येयं कृष्णया सहिताविति ॥८॥
8. mamāpi hi mahānharṣo yadahaṁ bhīmaphalgunau ,
kliṣṭāvaraṇye paśyeyaṁ kṛṣṇayā sahitāviti.
8. mama api hi mahān harṣaḥ yat aham bhīmaphalgunau
kliṣṭā avaraṇye paśyeyam kṛṣṇayā sahitau iti
8. Indeed, I would also experience great joy if I were to see Bhima and Arjuna, accompanied by distressed Draupadi (Kṛṣṇā), in an undesirable forest.
न तथा प्राप्नुयां प्रीतिमवाप्य वसुधामपि ।
दृष्ट्वा यथा पाण्डुसुतान्वल्कलाजिनवाससः ॥९॥
9. na tathā prāpnuyāṁ prītimavāpya vasudhāmapi ,
dṛṣṭvā yathā pāṇḍusutānvalkalājinavāsasaḥ.
9. na tathā prāpnuyām prītim avāpya vasudhām api
dṛṣṭvā yathā pāṇḍusutān valkalājinavāsasaḥ
9. I would not achieve such happiness even by obtaining the whole earth, as I would by seeing the sons of Pandu wearing garments of bark and deerskin.
किं नु स्यादधिकं तस्माद्यदहं द्रुपदात्मजाम् ।
द्रौपदीं कर्ण पश्येयं काषायवसनां वने ॥१०॥
10. kiṁ nu syādadhikaṁ tasmādyadahaṁ drupadātmajām ,
draupadīṁ karṇa paśyeyaṁ kāṣāyavasanāṁ vane.
10. kim nu syāt adhikam tasmāt yat aham drupadātmajām
draupadīm karṇa paśyeyam kāṣāyavasanām vane
10. Indeed, what could be greater than that, O Karna, if I were to see Draupadi, the daughter of Drupada, wearing a reddish-brown garment in the forest?
यदि मां धर्मराजश्च भीमसेनश्च पाण्डवः ।
युक्तं परमया लक्ष्म्या पश्येतां जीवितं भवेत् ॥११॥
11. yadi māṁ dharmarājaśca bhīmasenaśca pāṇḍavaḥ ,
yuktaṁ paramayā lakṣmyā paśyetāṁ jīvitaṁ bhavet.
11. yadi mām dharmarājaḥ ca bhīmasenaḥ ca pāṇḍavaḥ
yuktam paramayā lakṣmyā paśyetām jīvitam bhavet
11. If King Yudhishthira (Dharmaraja) and Bhimasena, the Pandava, were to see me, my life, endowed with supreme prosperity, would be meaningful.
उपायं न तु पश्यामि येन गच्छेम तद्वनम् ।
यथा चाभ्यनुजानीयाद्गच्छन्तं मां महीपतिः ॥१२॥
12. upāyaṁ na tu paśyāmi yena gacchema tadvanam ,
yathā cābhyanujānīyādgacchantaṁ māṁ mahīpatiḥ.
12. upāyam na tu paśyāmi yena gacchema tadvanam
yathā ca abhyanujānīyāt gacchantam mām mahīpatiḥ
12. However, I do not see any means by which we could go to that forest, nor how the king would permit me to go.
स सौबलेन सहितस्तथा दुःशासनेन च ।
उपायं पश्य निपुणं येन गच्छेम तद्वनम् ॥१३॥
13. sa saubalena sahitastathā duḥśāsanena ca ,
upāyaṁ paśya nipuṇaṁ yena gacchema tadvanam.
13. sa saubalena sahitaḥ tathā duḥśāsanena ca
upāyam paśya nipuṇam yena gacchema tadvanam
13. You, along with Saubala and Duḥśāsana, must find a clever means by which we can go to that forest.
अहमप्यद्य निश्चित्य गमनायेतराय वा ।
काल्यमेव गमिष्यामि समीपं पार्थिवस्य ह ॥१४॥
14. ahamapyadya niścitya gamanāyetarāya vā ,
kālyameva gamiṣyāmi samīpaṁ pārthivasya ha.
14. aham api adya niścitya gamanāya itarāya vā
kālyam eva gamiṣyāmi samīpam pārthivasya ha
14. Today, having firmly decided whether for departure or for the alternative, I will certainly go early in the morning to the king's presence.
मयि तत्रोपविष्टे तु भीष्मे च कुरुसत्तमे ।
उपायो यो भवेद्दृष्टस्तं ब्रूयाः सहसौबलः ॥१५॥
15. mayi tatropaviṣṭe tu bhīṣme ca kurusattame ,
upāyo yo bhaveddṛṣṭastaṁ brūyāḥ sahasaubalaḥ.
15. mayi tatra upaviṣṭe tu bhīṣme ca kurusattame
upāyaḥ yaḥ bhavet dṛṣṭaḥ tam brūyāḥ sahasāubalaḥ
15. But when I am seated there, and Bhishma, the foremost among the Kurus, is also present, then you, together with Saubala, should present any plan that has been devised.
ततो भीष्मस्य राज्ञश्च निशम्य गमनं प्रति ।
व्यवसायं करिष्येऽहमनुनीय पितामहम् ॥१६॥
16. tato bhīṣmasya rājñaśca niśamya gamanaṁ prati ,
vyavasāyaṁ kariṣye'hamanunīya pitāmaham.
16. tataḥ bhīṣmasya rājñaḥ ca niśamya gamanaṃ
prati aham vyavasāyaṃ kariṣye anunīya pitāmaham
16. Then, having learned about the departure of Bhishma and the king, I will make my resolution after having persuaded my grandfather (Bhishma).
तथेत्युक्त्वा तु ते सर्वे जग्मुरावसथान्प्रति ।
व्युषितायां रजन्यां तु कर्णो राजानमभ्ययात् ॥१७॥
17. tathetyuktvā tu te sarve jagmurāvasathānprati ,
vyuṣitāyāṁ rajanyāṁ tu karṇo rājānamabhyayāt.
17. tathā iti uktvā tu te sarve jagmuḥ āvasathān prati
vyuṣitāyāṃ rajanyāṃ tu karṇaḥ rājānam abhyayāt
17. Having said, 'Agreed,' all of them went to their dwellings. But when the night dawned, Karna approached the king.
ततो दुर्योधनं कर्णः प्रहसन्निदमब्रवीत् ।
उपायः परिदृष्टोऽयं तं निबोध जनेश्वर ॥१८॥
18. tato duryodhanaṁ karṇaḥ prahasannidamabravīt ,
upāyaḥ paridṛṣṭo'yaṁ taṁ nibodha janeśvara.
18. tataḥ duryodhanaṃ karṇaḥ prahasan idaṃ abravīt
upāyaḥ paridṛṣṭaḥ ayaṃ taṃ nibodha janeśvara
18. Then Karna, smiling, said this to Duryodhana: 'O lord of men, understand this plan that has been thoroughly devised!'
घोषा द्वैतवने सर्वे त्वत्प्रतीक्षा नराधिप ।
घोषयात्रापदेशेन गमिष्यामो न संशयः ॥१९॥
19. ghoṣā dvaitavane sarve tvatpratīkṣā narādhipa ,
ghoṣayātrāpadeśena gamiṣyāmo na saṁśayaḥ.
19. ghoṣāḥ dvaitavane sarve tvatpratīkṣāḥ narādhipa
ghoṣayātrāpadeśena gamiṣyāmaḥ na saṃśayaḥ
19. O lord of men, all the cowherds in the Dvaita forest (dvaitavana) are awaiting you. We shall go there without doubt, under the pretext of a cattle festival.
उचितं हि सदा गन्तुं घोषयात्रां विशां पते ।
एवं च त्वां पिता राजन्समनुज्ञातुमर्हति ॥२०॥
20. ucitaṁ hi sadā gantuṁ ghoṣayātrāṁ viśāṁ pate ,
evaṁ ca tvāṁ pitā rājansamanujñātumarhati.
20. ucitam hi sadā gantum ghoṣayātrām viśām pate
evam ca tvām pitā rājan samanujñātum arhati
20. Indeed, it is always proper to go on the cow-herding excursion (ghoṣayātrā), O lord of the people. And in this way, O king, your father should certainly permit you.
तथा कथयमानौ तौ घोषयात्राविनिश्चयम् ।
गान्धारराजः शकुनिः प्रत्युवाच हसन्निव ॥२१॥
21. tathā kathayamānau tau ghoṣayātrāviniścayam ,
gāndhārarājaḥ śakuniḥ pratyuvāca hasanniva.
21. tathā kathayamānau tau ghoṣayātrā viniścayam
gāndhāra rājaḥ śakuniḥ prati uvāca hasan iva
21. While they were thus discussing the decision regarding the cow-herding excursion (ghoṣayātrā), Śakuni, the king of Gandhāra, replied as if laughing.
उपायोऽयं मया दृष्टो गमनाय निरामयः ।
अनुज्ञास्यति नो राजा चोदयिष्यति चाप्युत ॥२२॥
22. upāyo'yaṁ mayā dṛṣṭo gamanāya nirāmayaḥ ,
anujñāsyati no rājā codayiṣyati cāpyuta.
22. upāyaḥ ayam mayā dṛṣṭaḥ gamanāya nirāmayaḥ
anujñāsyati naḥ rājā codayiṣyati ca api uta
22. This is a safe method I have seen for going. The king will surely permit us, and he will even urge us on.
घोषा द्वैतवने सर्वे त्वत्प्रतीक्षा नराधिप ।
घोषयात्रापदेशेन गमिष्यामो न संशयः ॥२३॥
23. ghoṣā dvaitavane sarve tvatpratīkṣā narādhipa ,
ghoṣayātrāpadeśena gamiṣyāmo na saṁśayaḥ.
23. ghoṣāḥ dvaitavane sarve tvat pratīkṣā narādhipa
ghoṣayātrā apadeśena gamiṣyāmaḥ na saṃśayaḥ
23. All the cowherds in the Daitavana forest are awaiting you, O king. We shall go there on the pretext of the cow-herding excursion (ghoṣayātrā); there is no doubt about it.
ततः प्रहसिताः सर्वे तेऽन्योन्यस्य तलान्ददुः ।
तदेव च विनिश्चित्य ददृशुः कुरुसत्तमम् ॥२४॥
24. tataḥ prahasitāḥ sarve te'nyonyasya talāndaduḥ ,
tadeva ca viniścitya dadṛśuḥ kurusattamam.
24. tataḥ prahasitāḥ sarve te anyonyasya talān
daduḥ tat eva ca viniścitya dadṛśuḥ kurusattamam
24. Then all of them laughed and struck each other's palms. Having thus confirmed (their decision), they saw the best of the Kurus.
