तथा समुपविष्टेषु पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु ।
व्यासः सत्यवतीपुत्रः प्रोवाचामन्त्र्य पार्थिवम् ॥१॥

tathā samupaviṣṭeṣu pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu ,

1. Vaiśampāyana said: When the noble Pāṇḍavas were thus seated, Vyasa, the son of Satyavati, addressed the king.
धृतराष्ट्र महाबाहो कच्चित्ते वर्धते तपः ।
कच्चिन्मनस्ते प्रीणाति वनवासे नराधिप ॥२॥
2. dhṛtarāṣṭra mahābāho kaccitte vardhate tapaḥ ,
kaccinmanaste prīṇāti vanavāse narādhipa.
2. dhṛtarāṣṭra mahābāho kaccit te vardhate tapaḥ
kaccit manaḥ te prīṇāti vanavāse narādhipa
2. dhṛtarāṣṭra mahābāho te tapaḥ kaccit vardhate

2. O Dhṛtarāṣṭra, O mighty-armed one, I hope your spiritual discipline (tapas) is thriving? And, O lord of men, I hope your mind finds contentment in this forest dwelling?
कच्चिद्धृदि न ते शोको राजन्पुत्रविनाशजः ।
कच्चिज्ज्ञानानि सर्वाणि प्रसन्नानि तवानघ ॥३॥
3. kacciddhṛdi na te śoko rājanputravināśajaḥ ,
kaccijjñānāni sarvāṇi prasannāni tavānagha.
3. kaccit hṛdi na te śokaḥ rājan putravināśajaḥ
kaccit jñānāni sarvāṇi prasannāni tava anagha
3. rājan te hṛdi putravināśajaḥ śokaḥ na kaccit
anagha sarvāṇi tava jñānāni kaccit prasannāni
3. O King, I hope there is no sorrow in your heart stemming from the destruction of your sons? O sinless one, I hope all your understandings (jñāna) are clear and tranquil?
कच्चिद्बुद्धिं दृढां कृत्वा चरस्यारण्यकं विधिम् ।
कच्चिद्वधूश्च गान्धारी न शोकेनाभिभूयते ॥४॥
4. kaccidbuddhiṁ dṛḍhāṁ kṛtvā carasyāraṇyakaṁ vidhim ,
kaccidvadhūśca gāndhārī na śokenābhibhūyate.
4. kaccit buddhim dṛḍhām kṛtvā carasi āraṇyakam vidhim
kaccit vadhūḥ ca gāndhārī na śokena abhibhūyate
4. I trust that, having made your resolve firm, you are observing the ascetic practice of the forest. And I hope that your wife, Gaṃdhārī, is not overcome by sorrow.
महाप्रज्ञा बुद्धिमती देवी धर्मार्थदर्शिनी ।
आगमापायतत्त्वज्ञा कच्चिदेषा न शोचति ॥५॥
5. mahāprajñā buddhimatī devī dharmārthadarśinī ,
āgamāpāyatattvajñā kaccideṣā na śocati.
5. mahāprajñā buddhimatī devī dharmārthadarśinī
āgamāpāyatattvajñā kaccit eṣā na śocati
5. I hope that this lady, who is greatly wise and intelligent, who discerns matters of righteousness (dharma) and purpose, and who understands the true nature of coming and going, is not sorrowful.
कच्चित्कुन्ती च राजंस्त्वां शुश्रूषुरनहंकृता ।
या परित्यज्य राज्यं स्वं गुरुशुश्रूषणे रता ॥६॥
6. kaccitkuntī ca rājaṁstvāṁ śuśrūṣuranahaṁkṛtā ,
yā parityajya rājyaṁ svaṁ guruśuśrūṣaṇe ratā.
6. kaccit kuntī ca rājan tvām śuśrūṣuḥ anahaṃkṛtā
yā parityajya rājyam svam guruśuśrūṣaṇe ratā
6. And, O king, I hope Kuntī, who is serving you and is humble, having relinquished her own royal position, remains engaged in the service of her elders.
कच्चिद्धर्मसुतो राजा त्वया प्रीत्याभिनन्दितः ।
भीमार्जुनयमाश्चैव कच्चिदेतेऽपि सान्त्विताः ॥७॥
7. kacciddharmasuto rājā tvayā prītyābhinanditaḥ ,
bhīmārjunayamāścaiva kaccidete'pi sāntvitāḥ.
7. kaccit dharmasutaḥ rājā tvayā prītyā abhinanditaḥ
bhīmārjunayamāḥ ca eva kaccit ete api sāntvitāḥ
7. I hope that King Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of righteousness (dharma), has been affectionately honored by you. And I hope that Bhīma, Arjuna, and the Yamas (Nakula and Sahadeva) have also been consoled.
कच्चिन्नन्दसि दृष्ट्वैतान्कच्चित्ते निर्मलं मनः ।
कच्चिद्विशुद्धभावोऽसि जातज्ञानो नराधिप ॥८॥
8. kaccinnandasi dṛṣṭvaitānkaccitte nirmalaṁ manaḥ ,
kaccidviśuddhabhāvo'si jātajñāno narādhipa.
8. kaccit nandasi dṛṣṭvā etān kaccit te nirmalam manaḥ
kaccit viśuddhabhāvaḥ asi jātājñānaḥ narādhipa
8. narādhipa kaccit etān dṛṣṭvā nandasi kaccit te
manaḥ nirmalam kaccit viśuddhabhāvaḥ asi jātājñānaḥ
8. Are you pleased to see them? Is your mind pure? Are you of a purified disposition, O king of men, having attained knowledge?
एतद्धि त्रितयं श्रेष्ठं सर्वभूतेषु भारत ।
निर्वैरता महाराज सत्यमद्रोह एव च ॥९॥
9. etaddhi tritayaṁ śreṣṭhaṁ sarvabhūteṣu bhārata ,
nirvairatā mahārāja satyamadroha eva ca.
9. etad hi tritayam śreṣṭham sarvabhūteṣu bhārata
nirvairatā mahārāja satyam adrohaḥ eva ca
9. bhārata mahārāja etad hi tritayam sarvabhūteṣu
śreṣṭham nirvairatā satyam ca adrohaḥ eva
9. O Bhārata, O great king, this triad is indeed most excellent among all beings: non-enmity, truthfulness, and non-malice.
कच्चित्ते नानुतापोऽस्ति वनवासेन भारत ।
स्वदते वन्यमन्नं वा मुनिवासांसि वा विभो ॥१०॥
10. kaccitte nānutāpo'sti vanavāsena bhārata ,
svadate vanyamannaṁ vā munivāsāṁsi vā vibho.
10. kaccit te na anutāpaḥ asti vanavāsena bhārata
svadate vanyam annam vā munivāsāṃsi vā vibho
10. bhārata vibho kaccit te vanavāsena na anutāpaḥ asti
vā vanyam annam svadate vā munivāsāṃsi svadate
10. O Bhārata, do you feel no regret regarding your forest dwelling? And O mighty one, do the wild foods taste good to you, or the garments of the ascetic (muni)?
विदितं चापि मे राजन्विदुरस्य महात्मनः ।
गमनं विधिना येन धर्मस्य सुमहात्मनः ॥११॥
11. viditaṁ cāpi me rājanvidurasya mahātmanaḥ ,
gamanaṁ vidhinā yena dharmasya sumahātmanaḥ.
11. viditam ca api me rājan vidurasya mahātmanaḥ
gamanam vidhinā yena dharmasya sumahātmanaḥ
11. rājan me ca api vidurasya mahātmanaḥ gamanam
viditam yena vidhinā dharmasya sumahātmanaḥ (asti)
11. And it is known to me, O king, regarding the departure of the great-souled Vidura, by what method that very great-souled embodiment of natural law (dharma) departed.
माण्डव्यशापाद्धि स वै धर्मो विदुरतां गतः ।
महाबुद्धिर्महायोगी महात्मा सुमहामनाः ॥१२॥
12. māṇḍavyaśāpāddhi sa vai dharmo viduratāṁ gataḥ ,
mahābuddhirmahāyogī mahātmā sumahāmanāḥ.
12. māṇḍavyaśāpāt hi sa vai dharmaḥ viduratām
gataḥ mahābuddhiḥ mahāyogī mahātmā sumahāmanāḥ
12. saḥ vai dharmaḥ māṇḍavyaśāpāt hi viduratām
gataḥ mahābuddhiḥ mahāyogī mahātmā sumahāmanāḥ
12. Indeed, due to Maṇḍavya's curse, that very natural law (dharma) assumed the state of Vidura. He was a person of great intellect, a great practitioner of (yoga), a noble soul, and extremely magnanimous.
बृहस्पतिर्वा देवेषु शुक्रो वाप्यसुरेषु यः ।
न तथा बुद्धिसंपन्नो यथा स पुरुषर्षभः ॥१३॥
13. bṛhaspatirvā deveṣu śukro vāpyasureṣu yaḥ ,
na tathā buddhisaṁpanno yathā sa puruṣarṣabhaḥ.
13. bṛhaspatiḥ vā deveṣu śukraḥ vā api asureṣu yaḥ
na tathā buddhisampannaḥ yathā sa puruṣarṣabhaḥ
13. deveṣu bṛhaspatiḥ vā asureṣu yaḥ śukraḥ vā api
saḥ puruṣarṣabhaḥ yathā tathā buddhisampannaḥ na
13. Neither Bṛhaspati among the gods, nor Śukra among the asuras, is as endowed with intellect as that best among men.
तपोबलव्ययं कृत्वा सुमहच्चिरसंभृतम् ।
माण्डव्येनर्षिणा धर्मो ह्यभिभूतः सनातनः ॥१४॥
14. tapobalavyayaṁ kṛtvā sumahaccirasaṁbhṛtam ,
māṇḍavyenarṣiṇā dharmo hyabhibhūtaḥ sanātanaḥ.
14. tapobalavyayam kṛtvā sumahat ciraśambhṛtam
māṇḍavyena ṛṣiṇā dharmaḥ hi abhibhūtaḥ sanātanaḥ
14. sumahat ciraśambhṛtam tapobalavyayam kṛtvā
māṇḍavyena ṛṣiṇā hi sanātanaḥ dharmaḥ abhibhūtaḥ
14. Indeed, having expended the immense power of his spiritual austerity (tapas), which was accumulated over a very long time, the eternal natural law (dharma) was overpowered by the sage Maṇḍavya.
नियोगाद्ब्रह्मणः पूर्वं मया स्वेन बलेन च ।
वैचित्रवीर्यके क्षेत्रे जातः स सुमहामतिः ॥१५॥
15. niyogādbrahmaṇaḥ pūrvaṁ mayā svena balena ca ,
vaicitravīryake kṣetre jātaḥ sa sumahāmatiḥ.
15. niyogāt brahmaṇaḥ pūrvam mayā svena balena ca
vaicitravīryake kṣetre jātaḥ sa sumahāmatiḥ
15. pūrvam brahmaṇaḥ niyogāt ca mayā svena balena
saḥ sumahāmatiḥ vaicitravīryake kṣetre jātaḥ
15. Formerly, by the command of (Brahman) and by my own power, that greatly intelligent one was born in the lineage of Vaicitravīrya.
भ्राता तव महाराज देवदेवः सनातनः ।
धारणाच्छ्रेयसो ध्यानाद्यं धर्मं कवयो विदुः ॥१६॥
16. bhrātā tava mahārāja devadevaḥ sanātanaḥ ,
dhāraṇācchreyaso dhyānādyaṁ dharmaṁ kavayo viduḥ.
16. bhrātā tava mahārāja devadevaḥ sanātanaḥ dhāraṇāt
śreyasaḥ dhyānāt yam dharmam kavayaḥ viduḥ
16. mahārāja tava bhrātā devadevaḥ sanātanaḥ yam
dharmam śreyasaḥ dhāraṇāt dhyānāt kavayaḥ viduḥ
16. O great king, your brother, the eternal god of gods, is known by the wise as that natural law (dharma) which comes from upholding what is excellent and from deep meditation.
सत्येन संवर्धयति दमेन नियमेन च ।
अहिंसया च दानेन तपसा च सनातनः ॥१७॥
17. satyena saṁvardhayati damena niyamena ca ,
ahiṁsayā ca dānena tapasā ca sanātanaḥ.
17. satyena saṃvardhayati damena niyamena ca
ahiṃsayā ca dānena tapasā ca sanātanaḥ
17. sanātanaḥ satyena damena niyamena ca
ahiṃsayā ca dānena tapasā ca saṃvardhayati
17. And the eternal one (dharma embodied in Yudhiṣṭhira) promotes (itself) through truthfulness, self-control, and discipline, and through non-violence, charity, and austerity (tapas).
येन योगबलाज्जातः कुरुराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
धर्म इत्येष नृपते प्राज्ञेनामितबुद्धिना ॥१८॥
18. yena yogabalājjātaḥ kururājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
dharma ityeṣa nṛpate prājñenāmitabuddhinā.
18. yena yogabalāt jātaḥ kururājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
dharmaḥ iti eṣa nṛpate prājñena amitabuddhinā
18. nṛpate yena yogabalāt kururājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
jātaḥ eṣaḥ dharmaḥ iti prājñena amitabuddhinā
18. O king, the Kuru king Yudhiṣṭhira, who was born through the power of spiritual discipline (yoga), is indeed this natural law (dharma), as known by the wise one of boundless intellect.
यथा ह्यग्निर्यथा वायुर्यथापः पृथिवी यथा ।
यथाकाशं तथा धर्म इह चामुत्र च स्थितः ॥१९॥
19. yathā hyagniryathā vāyuryathāpaḥ pṛthivī yathā ,
yathākāśaṁ tathā dharma iha cāmutra ca sthitaḥ.
19. yathā hi agniḥ yathā vāyuḥ yathā āpaḥ pṛthivī yathā
yathā ākāśam tathā dharmaḥ iha ca amutra ca sthitaḥ
19. hi yathā agniḥ yathā vāyuḥ yathā āpaḥ yathā pṛthivī
yathā ākāśam tathā dharmaḥ iha ca amutra ca sthitaḥ
19. Indeed, just as fire, just as air, just as water, just as earth, and just as space (ākāśa), so too is the natural law (dharma) established both in this world and in the next.
सर्वगश्चैव कौरव्य सर्वं व्याप्य चराचरम् ।
दृश्यते देवदेवः स सिद्धैर्निर्दग्धकिल्बिषैः ॥२०॥
20. sarvagaścaiva kauravya sarvaṁ vyāpya carācaram ,
dṛśyate devadevaḥ sa siddhairnirdagdhakilbiṣaiḥ.
20. sarvagaḥ ca eva kauravya sarvam vyāpya cara-acaram
dṛśyate deva-devaḥ saḥ siddhaiḥ nirdagdha-kilbiṣaiḥ
20. kauravya,
saḥ deva-devaḥ (yaḥ) sarvagaḥ ca eva sarvam cara-acaram vyāpya nirdagdha-kilbiṣaiḥ siddhaiḥ dṛśyate.
20. O scion of Kuru, that God of gods, who is all-pervading and permeates all moving and non-moving creation, is seen by perfected beings whose impurities have been completely burned away.
यो हि धर्मः स विदुरो विदुरो यः स पाण्डवः ।
स एष राजन्वश्यस्ते पाण्डवः प्रेष्यवत्स्थितः ॥२१॥
21. yo hi dharmaḥ sa viduro viduro yaḥ sa pāṇḍavaḥ ,
sa eṣa rājanvaśyaste pāṇḍavaḥ preṣyavatsthitaḥ.
21. yaḥ hi dharmaḥ saḥ viduraḥ viduraḥ yaḥ saḥ pāṇḍavaḥ
saḥ eṣa rājan vaśyaḥ te pāṇḍavaḥ preṣyavat-sthitaḥ
21. rājan,
yaḥ hi dharmaḥ,
saḥ viduraḥ; yaḥ viduraḥ,
saḥ pāṇḍavaḥ.
saḥ eṣaḥ pāṇḍavaḥ te vaśyaḥ preṣyavat-sthitaḥ.
21. Indeed, he who embodies natural law (dharma) is Vidura; and he who is Vidura, he is a Pāṇḍava. O king, that very Pāṇḍava is submissive to you, standing like a servant.
प्रविष्टः स स्वमात्मानं भ्राता ते बुद्धिसत्तमः ।
दिष्ट्या महात्मा कौन्तेयं महायोगबलान्वितः ॥२२॥
22. praviṣṭaḥ sa svamātmānaṁ bhrātā te buddhisattamaḥ ,
diṣṭyā mahātmā kaunteyaṁ mahāyogabalānvitaḥ.
22. praviṣṭaḥ saḥ svam ātmānam bhrātā te buddhi-sattamaḥ
diṣṭyā mahā-ātmā kaunteyam mahā-yoga-bala-anvitaḥ
22. diṣṭyā,
saḥ te buddhi-sattamaḥ bhrātā svam ātmānam praviṣṭaḥ.
mahā-ātmā mahā-yoga-bala-anvitaḥ (saḥ) kaunteyam (apaśyat).
22. Fortunately, that brother of yours, supreme in intellect, has entered into his own self (ātman). That great-souled one, endowed with the power of great spiritual practice (yoga), has [thus] seen Kaunteya.
त्वां चापि श्रेयसा योक्ष्ये नचिराद्भरतर्षभ ।
संशयच्छेदनार्थं हि प्राप्तं मां विद्धि पुत्रक ॥२३॥
23. tvāṁ cāpi śreyasā yokṣye nacirādbharatarṣabha ,
saṁśayacchedanārthaṁ hi prāptaṁ māṁ viddhi putraka.
23. tvām ca api śreyasā yokṣye na-cirāt bharata-ṛṣabha
saṃśaya-cchedana-artham hi prāptam mām viddhi putrak
23. bharata-ṛṣabha,
tvām ca api śreyasā na-cirāt yokṣye.
putrak,
hi saṃśaya-cchedana-artham prāptam mām viddhi.
23. O bull among the Bhāratas, I shall soon connect you with great welfare. Indeed, my son, know me as having arrived for the purpose of dispelling your doubts.
न कृतं यत्पुरा कैश्चित्कर्म लोके महर्षिभिः ।
आश्चर्यभूतं तपसः फलं संदर्शयामि वः ॥२४॥
24. na kṛtaṁ yatpurā kaiścitkarma loke maharṣibhiḥ ,
āścaryabhūtaṁ tapasaḥ phalaṁ saṁdarśayāmi vaḥ.
24. na kṛtam yat purā kaiścit karma loke maharṣibhiḥ
āścaryabhūtam tapasaḥ phalam saṃdarśayāmi vaḥ
24. I will show you the astonishing fruit of my austerity (tapas), a deed never before accomplished by anyone in the world, not even by the great sages.
किमिच्छसि महीपाल मत्तः प्राप्तुममानुषम् ।
द्रष्टुं स्प्रष्टुमथ श्रोतुं वद कर्तास्मि तत्तथा ॥२५॥
25. kimicchasi mahīpāla mattaḥ prāptumamānuṣam ,
draṣṭuṁ spraṣṭumatha śrotuṁ vada kartāsmi tattathā.
25. kim icchasi mahīpāla mattaḥ prāptum amānuṣam draṣṭum
spraṣṭum atha śrotum vada kartā asmi tat tathā
25. O king, what superhuman feat do you wish to obtain from me? To see, to touch, or to hear? Speak, and I shall do it accordingly.
