युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
दर्शने कीदृशः स्नेहः संवासे च पितामह ।
महाभाग्यं गवां चैव तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥१॥

darśane kīdṛśaḥ snehaḥ saṁvāse ca pitāmaha ,
mahābhāgyaṁ gavāṁ caiva tanme brūhi pitāmaha.

1. Yudhishthira said: O Grandfather, what is the nature of affection (sneha) in mere seeing and in living together? Also, O Grandfather, tell me about the great auspiciousness (mahābhāgya) of cows.
भीष्म उवाच ।
हन्त ते कथयिष्यामि पुरावृत्तं महाद्युते ।
नहुषस्य च संवादं महर्षेश्च्यवनस्य च ॥२॥
2. bhīṣma uvāca ,
hanta te kathayiṣyāmi purāvṛttaṁ mahādyute ,
nahuṣasya ca saṁvādaṁ maharṣeścyavanasya ca.

2. Bhishma said: Indeed, O greatly effulgent one, I will narrate to you the ancient story, specifically the dialogue between Nahusha and the great sage Chyavana.
पुरा महर्षिश्च्यवनो भार्गवो भरतर्षभ ।
उदवासकृतारम्भो बभूव सुमहाव्रतः ॥३॥
3. purā maharṣiścyavano bhārgavo bharatarṣabha ,
udavāsakṛtārambho babhūva sumahāvrataḥ.

3. O best among the Bharatas, in ancient times, the great sage Chyavana, a descendant of Bhṛgu, undertook the commencement of a water dwelling, and became a practitioner of very great spiritual disciplines (vrata).
निहत्य मानं क्रोधं च प्रहर्षं शोकमेव च ।
वर्षाणि द्वादश मुनिर्जलवासे धृतव्रतः ॥४॥
4. nihatya mānaṁ krodhaṁ ca praharṣaṁ śokameva ca ,
varṣāṇi dvādaśa munirjalavāse dhṛtavrataḥ.
4. nihatya mānaṃ krodhaṃ ca praharṣaṃ śokam eva
ca varṣāṇi dvādaśa muniḥ jalavāse dhṛtavrataḥ

4. The sage (muni), having relinquished pride, anger, excessive joy, and sorrow, undertook a spiritual discipline (vrata) and dwelt in water for twelve years.
आदधत्सर्वभूतेषु विस्रम्भं परमं शुभम् ।
जलेचरेषु सत्त्वेषु शीतरश्मिरिव प्रभुः ॥५॥
5. ādadhatsarvabhūteṣu visrambhaṁ paramaṁ śubham ,
jalecareṣu sattveṣu śītaraśmiriva prabhuḥ.
5. ādadhat sarvabhūteṣu visrambhaṃ paramaṃ śubham
jalacareṣu sattveṣu śītarasmiḥ iva prabhuḥ
5. prabhuḥ sarvabhūteṣu jalacareṣu sattveṣu

5. That powerful sage (prabhu), bestowing supreme and auspicious trust in all beings, particularly among aquatic creatures, was like the cool-rayed moon.
स्थाणुभूतः शुचिर्भूत्वा दैवतेभ्यः प्रणम्य च ।
गङ्गायमुनयोर्मध्ये जलं संप्रविवेश ह ॥६॥
6. sthāṇubhūtaḥ śucirbhūtvā daivatebhyaḥ praṇamya ca ,
gaṅgāyamunayormadhye jalaṁ saṁpraviveśa ha.
6. sthāṇubhūtaḥ śuciḥ bhūtvā daivatebhyaḥ praṇamya
ca gaṅgāyamunayoḥ madhye jalaṃ saṃpraviveśa ha
6. sthāṇubhūtaḥ śuciḥ bhūtvā daivatebhyaḥ ca praṇamya
gaṅgāyamunayoḥ madhye jalaṃ ha saṃpraviveśa
6. Becoming as still as a post (sthāṇubhūta) and purifying himself, and having bowed down to the deities, he then plunged into the water at the confluence of the Gaṅgā and Yamunā.
गङ्गायमुनयोर्वेगं सुभीमं भीमनिःस्वनम् ।
प्रतिजग्राह शिरसा वातवेगसमं जवे ॥७॥
7. gaṅgāyamunayorvegaṁ subhīmaṁ bhīmaniḥsvanam ,
pratijagrāha śirasā vātavegasamaṁ jave.
7. gaṅgāyamunayoḥ vegam subhīmam bhīmanihsvanam
pratijagrāha śirasā vātavegasamam jave
7. śirasā gaṅgāyamunayoḥ vegam subhīmam

7. He withstood with his head the tremendously formidable and terribly roaring current of the Ganga and Yamuna, a current that was equal in speed to the wind.
गङ्गा च यमुना चैव सरितश्चानुगास्तयोः ।
प्रदक्षिणमृषिं चक्रुर्न चैनं पर्यपीडयन् ॥८॥
8. gaṅgā ca yamunā caiva saritaścānugāstayoḥ ,
pradakṣiṇamṛṣiṁ cakrurna cainaṁ paryapīḍayan.
8. gaṅgā ca yamunā ca eva saritaḥ ca anugāḥ tayoḥ
pradakṣiṇam ṛṣim cakruḥ na ca enam paryapīḍayan
8. gaṅgā ca yamunā ca eva tayoḥ anugāḥ ca saritaḥ
ṛṣim pradakṣiṇam cakruḥ ca enam na paryapīḍayan
8. The Ganga and Yamuna, along with their tributary rivers, circumambulated the sage (muni) and did not trouble him.
अन्तर्जले स सुष्वाप काष्ठभूतो महामुनिः ।
ततश्चोर्ध्वस्थितो धीमानभवद्भरतर्षभ ॥९॥
9. antarjale sa suṣvāpa kāṣṭhabhūto mahāmuniḥ ,
tataścordhvasthito dhīmānabhavadbharatarṣabha.
9. antarjale sa suṣvāpa kāṣṭhabhūtaḥ mahāmuniḥ tataḥ
ca ūrdhvasthitaḥ dhīmān abhavat bharatarṣabha
9. bharatarṣabha saḥ mahāmuniḥ antarjale kāṣṭhabhūtaḥ
suṣvāpa ca tataḥ dhīmān ūrdhvasthitaḥ abhavat
9. O best of Bharatas, that great sage (muni) slept underwater, remaining motionless like a log of wood. Then, the wise one rose and stood upright.
जलौकसां स सत्त्वानां बभूव प्रियदर्शनः ।
उपाजिघ्रन्त च तदा मत्स्यास्तं हृष्टमानसाः ।
तत्र तस्यासतः कालः समतीतोऽभवन्महान् ॥१०॥
10. jalaukasāṁ sa sattvānāṁ babhūva priyadarśanaḥ ,
upājighranta ca tadā matsyāstaṁ hṛṣṭamānasāḥ ,
tatra tasyāsataḥ kālaḥ samatīto'bhavanmahān.
10. jalaukasām sa sattvānām babhūva
priyadarśanaḥ upājighranta ca tadā
matsyāḥ tam hṛṣṭamānasāḥ tatra tasya
āsataḥ kālaḥ samatītaḥ abhavat mahān
10. saḥ jalaukasām sattvānām priyadarśanaḥ
babhūva ca tadā hṛṣṭamānasāḥ
matsyāḥ tam upājighranta tatra tasya
āsataḥ mahān kālaḥ samatītaḥ abhavat
10. He became a pleasing sight to the aquatic creatures. Then, the fish approached him with joyful hearts, smelling him. While he stayed there, a great deal of time passed.
ततः कदाचित्समये कस्मिंश्चिन्मत्स्यजीविनः ।
तं देशं समुपाजग्मुर्जालहस्ता महाद्युते ॥११॥
11. tataḥ kadācitsamaye kasmiṁścinmatsyajīvinaḥ ,
taṁ deśaṁ samupājagmurjālahastā mahādyute.
11. tataḥ kadācit samaye kasmiṃścit matsyajīvinaḥ
tam deśam samupājagmuḥ jālahastāḥ mahādyute
11. tataḥ mahādyute kadācit kasmiṃścit samaye
jālahastāḥ matsyajīvinaḥ tam deśam samupājagmuḥ
11. Then, O greatly resplendent one, at a certain time, fishermen carrying nets arrived at that place.
निषादा बहवस्तत्र मत्स्योद्धरणनिश्चिताः ।
व्यायता बलिनः शूराः सलिलेष्वनिवर्तिनः ।
अभ्याययुश्च तं देशं निश्चिता जालकर्मणि ॥१२॥
12. niṣādā bahavastatra matsyoddharaṇaniścitāḥ ,
vyāyatā balinaḥ śūrāḥ salileṣvanivartinaḥ ,
abhyāyayuśca taṁ deśaṁ niścitā jālakarmaṇi.
12. niṣādāḥ bahavaḥ tatra matsyoddharaṇaniścitāḥ
vyāyatāḥ balinaḥ śūrāḥ
salileṣu anivartinaḥ abhyāyayuḥ
ca tam deśam niścitāḥ jālakarmaṇi
12. tatra bahavaḥ vyāyatāḥ balinaḥ
śūrāḥ salileṣu anivartinaḥ
matsyoddharaṇaniścitāḥ niṣādāḥ ca jālakarmaṇi
niścitāḥ tam deśam abhyāyayuḥ
12. Many Nishadas, determined to catch fish, broad-shouldered, strong, brave, and unyielding in the waters, came there. They were resolute in their netting (karma) and approached that place.
जालं च योजयामासुर्विशेषेण जनाधिप ।
मत्स्योदकं समासाद्य तदा भरतसत्तम ॥१३॥
13. jālaṁ ca yojayāmāsurviśeṣeṇa janādhipa ,
matsyodakaṁ samāsādya tadā bharatasattama.
13. jālam ca yojayāmāsuḥ viśeṣeṇa janādhipa
matsyodakam samāsādya tadā bharatasattama
13. ca tadā janādhipa bharatasattama matsyodakam
samāsādya viśeṣeṇa jālam yojayāmāsuḥ
13. And then, O ruler of people, O best of Bharatas, having reached the fish-filled waters, they particularly spread their nets.
ततस्ते बहुभिर्योगैः कैवर्ता मत्स्यकाङ्क्षिणः ।
गङ्गायमुनयोर्वारि जालैरभ्यकिरंस्ततः ॥१४॥
14. tataste bahubhiryogaiḥ kaivartā matsyakāṅkṣiṇaḥ ,
gaṅgāyamunayorvāri jālairabhyakiraṁstataḥ.
14. tataḥ te bahubhiḥ yogaiḥ kaivartāḥ matsyakāṅkṣiṇaḥ
gaṅgāyamunayoḥ vāri jālaiḥ abhyakiran tataḥ
14. tataḥ te matsyakāṅkṣiṇaḥ kaivartāḥ bahubhiḥ yogaiḥ
jālaiḥ gaṅgāyamunayoḥ vāri abhyakiran tataḥ
14. Then, from there, those Kaivarta fishermen, desirous of fish, using many methods (yoga), cast their nets into the waters of the Ganga and Yamuna.
जालं सुविततं तेषां नवसूत्रकृतं तथा ।
विस्तारायामसंपन्नं यत्तत्र सलिले क्षमम् ॥१५॥
15. jālaṁ suvitataṁ teṣāṁ navasūtrakṛtaṁ tathā ,
vistārāyāmasaṁpannaṁ yattatra salile kṣamam.
15. jālam suvitatam teṣām navasūtrakṛtam tathā
vistārāyāmasampannam yat tatra salile kṣamam
15. teṣām jālam suvitatam navasūtrakṛtam tathā
vistārāyāmasampannam yat tatra salile kṣamam
15. Their extensive net, made with new ropes, was complete with great width and length, making it well-suited for use in the water.
ततस्ते सुमहच्चैव बलवच्च सुवर्तितम् ।
प्रकीर्य सर्वतः सर्वे जालं चकृषिरे तदा ॥१६॥
16. tataste sumahaccaiva balavacca suvartitam ,
prakīrya sarvataḥ sarve jālaṁ cakṛṣire tadā.
16. tataḥ te sumahat ca eva balavat ca suvartitam
prakīrya sarvataḥ sarve jālam cakṛṣire tadā
16. tataḥ tadā sarve te sumahat ca eva balavat ca
suvartitam jālam sarvataḥ prakīrya cakṛṣire
16. Then, all of them cast that very large, strong, and well-prepared net everywhere and dragged it (through the water) at that time.
अभीतरूपाः संहृष्टास्तेऽन्योन्यवशवर्तिनः ।
बबन्धुस्तत्र मत्स्यांश्च तथान्याञ्जलचारिणः ॥१७॥
17. abhītarūpāḥ saṁhṛṣṭāste'nyonyavaśavartinaḥ ,
babandhustatra matsyāṁśca tathānyāñjalacāriṇaḥ.
17. abhītarūpāḥ saṃhṛṣṭāḥ te anyonyavaśavartinaḥ
babandhuḥ tatra matsyān ca tathā anyān jalacāriṇaḥ
17. te abhītarūpāḥ saṃhṛṣṭāḥ anyonyavaśavartinaḥ
tatra matsyān ca tathā anyān jalacāriṇaḥ babandhuḥ
17. Fearless and joyful, and cooperating with one another, they then caught fish and other aquatic creatures in the net.
तथा मत्स्यैः परिवृतं च्यवनं भृगुनन्दनम् ।
आकर्षन्त महाराज जालेनाथ यदृच्छया ॥१८॥
18. tathā matsyaiḥ parivṛtaṁ cyavanaṁ bhṛgunandanam ,
ākarṣanta mahārāja jālenātha yadṛcchayā.
18. tathā matsyaiḥ parivṛtam cyavanam bhṛgunandanam
ākarṣanta mahārāja jālena atha yadṛcchayā
18. mahārāja atha tathā yadṛcchayā jālena matsyaiḥ
parivṛtam bhṛgunandanam cyavanam ākarṣanta
18. Then, O great king, they unintentionally hauled in with their net Cyavana, the son of Bhṛgu, who was surrounded by fish.
नदीशैवलदिग्धाङ्गं हरिश्मश्रुजटाधरम् ।
लग्नैः शङ्खगणैर्गात्रैः कोष्ठैश्चित्रैरिवावृतम् ॥१९॥
19. nadīśaivaladigdhāṅgaṁ hariśmaśrujaṭādharam ,
lagnaiḥ śaṅkhagaṇairgātraiḥ koṣṭhaiścitrairivāvṛtam.
19. nadīśaivaladigdhāṅgam hariśmaśrujaṭādharam lagnaiḥ
śaṅkhagaṇaiḥ gātraiḥ koṣṭhaiḥ citraiḥ iva āvṛtam
19. nadīśaivaladigdhāṅgam hariśmaśrujaṭādharam āvṛtam
citraiḥ koṣṭhaiḥ iva lagnaiḥ śaṅkhagaṇaiḥ gātraiḥ
19. His body was smeared with river algae, and he bore a green beard and matted locks. He appeared as if covered by strange, variegated patterns, with groups of conches attached to his limbs.
तं जालेनोद्धृतं दृष्ट्वा ते तदा वेदपारगम् ।
सर्वे प्राञ्जलयो दाशाः शिरोभिः प्रापतन्भुवि ॥२०॥
20. taṁ jālenoddhṛtaṁ dṛṣṭvā te tadā vedapāragam ,
sarve prāñjalayo dāśāḥ śirobhiḥ prāpatanbhuvi.
20. tam jālena uddhṛtam dṛṣṭvā te tadā vedapāragam
sarve prāñjalayaḥ dāśāḥ śirobhiḥ prāpatan bhuvi
20. te sarve dāśāḥ tadā tam vedapāragam jālenoddhṛtam
dṛṣṭvā prāñjalayaḥ śirobhiḥ bhuvi prāpatan
20. When all the fishermen saw him, a master of the Vedas, lifted out by the net, they immediately fell to the ground with folded hands, prostrating themselves.
परिखेदपरित्रासाज्जालस्याकर्षणेन च ।
मत्स्या बभूवुर्व्यापन्नाः स्थलसंकर्षणेन च ॥२१॥
21. parikhedaparitrāsājjālasyākarṣaṇena ca ,
matsyā babhūvurvyāpannāḥ sthalasaṁkarṣaṇena ca.
21. parikhedaparitrāsāt jālasya ākarṣaṇena ca
matsyāḥ babhūvuḥ vyāpannāḥ sthalasaṅkarṣaṇena ca
21. matsyāḥ parikhedaparitrāsāt ca jālasya ākarṣaṇena
ca sthalasaṅkarṣaṇena vyāpannāḥ babhūvuḥ
21. The fish perished from exhaustion and great fear, both from the pulling of the net and from being dragged onto the dry land.
स मुनिस्तत्तदा दृष्ट्वा मत्स्यानां कदनं कृतम् ।
बभूव कृपयाविष्टो निःश्वसंश्च पुनः पुनः ॥२२॥
22. sa munistattadā dṛṣṭvā matsyānāṁ kadanaṁ kṛtam ,
babhūva kṛpayāviṣṭo niḥśvasaṁśca punaḥ punaḥ.
22. saḥ muniḥ tat tadā dṛṣṭvā matsyānām kadanam kṛtam
babhūva kṛpayā āviṣṭaḥ niḥśvasan ca punaḥ punaḥ
22. saḥ muniḥ tadā matsyānām kṛtam kadanam tat dṛṣṭvā
kṛpayā āviṣṭaḥ babhūva ca punaḥ punaḥ niḥśvasan
22. Seeing the slaughter of the fish that had occurred, that sage was then overcome with compassion and sighed again and again.
निषादा ऊचुः ।
अज्ञानाद्यत्कृतं पापं प्रसादं तत्र नः कुरु ।
करवाम प्रियं किं ते तन्नो ब्रूहि महामुने ॥२३॥
23. niṣādā ūcuḥ ,
ajñānādyatkṛtaṁ pāpaṁ prasādaṁ tatra naḥ kuru ,
karavāma priyaṁ kiṁ te tanno brūhi mahāmune.
23. niṣādāḥ ūcuḥ ajñānāt yat kṛtam pāpam prasādam tatra
naḥ kuru karavāma priyam kim te tat naḥ brūhi mahāmune
23. mahāmune niṣādāḥ ūcuḥ ajñānāt yat pāpam kṛtam tatra
naḥ prasādam kuru te priyam kim karavāma tat naḥ brūhi
23. The Nishadas said, "Whatever sin we have committed due to ignorance, please show us grace regarding that. What pleasing service can we render to you? Please tell us that, O great sage."
भीष्म उवाच ।
इत्युक्तो मत्स्यमध्यस्थश्च्यवनो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
यो मेऽद्य परमः कामस्तं शृणुध्वं समाहिताः ॥२४॥
24. bhīṣma uvāca ,
ityukto matsyamadhyasthaścyavano vākyamabravīt ,
yo me'dya paramaḥ kāmastaṁ śṛṇudhvaṁ samāhitāḥ.
24. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca iti uktaḥ matsyamadhyasthaḥ cyavanaḥ vākyam
abravīt yaḥ me adya paramaḥ kāmaḥ tam śṛṇudhvam samāhitāḥ
24. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca iti uktaḥ matsyamadhyasthaḥ cyavanaḥ vākyam
abravīt adya me yaḥ paramaḥ kāmaḥ tam samāhitāḥ śṛṇudhvam
24. Bhishma said, "Thus addressed, Chyavana, who was situated amidst the fish, spoke these words: 'Listen carefully, everyone, to what my paramount desire is today.'"
प्राणोत्सर्गं विक्रयं वा मत्स्यैर्यास्याम्यहं सह ।
संवासान्नोत्सहे त्यक्तुं सलिलाध्युषितानिमान् ॥२५॥
25. prāṇotsargaṁ vikrayaṁ vā matsyairyāsyāmyahaṁ saha ,
saṁvāsānnotsahe tyaktuṁ salilādhyuṣitānimān.
25. prāṇotsargam vikrayam vā matsyaiḥ yāsyāmi aham saha
saṃvāsāt na utsahe tyaktum salilādhyuṣitān imān
25. aham matsyaiḥ saha prāṇotsargam vā vikrayam yāsyāmi
saṃvāsāt salilādhyuṣitān imān tyaktum na utsahe
25. "I will go along with these fish, whether it means the abandonment of my life or being sold. Due to my long association (saṃvāsa) with them, I cannot bear to forsake these creatures who have lived in water."
इत्युक्तास्ते निषादास्तु सुभृशं भयकम्पिताः ।
सर्वे विषण्णवदना नहुषाय न्यवेदयन् ॥२६॥
26. ityuktāste niṣādāstu subhṛśaṁ bhayakampitāḥ ,
sarve viṣaṇṇavadanā nahuṣāya nyavedayan.
26. iti uktāḥ te niṣādāḥ tu subhṛśam bhayakampitāḥ
sarve viṣaṇṇavadanāḥ nahuṣāya nyavedayan
26. iti uktāḥ te niṣādāḥ tu subhṛśam bhayakampitāḥ

26. Thus addressed, those Nishadas, indeed greatly trembling with fear, all with dejected faces, reported the matter to Nahusha.
