संजय उवाच ।
दुर्योधनस्य तद्वाक्यं निशम्य भरतर्षभः ।
नेत्राभ्यामतिताम्राभ्यां कैतव्यं समुदैक्षत ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
duryodhanasya tadvākyaṁ niśamya bharatarṣabhaḥ ,
netrābhyāmatitāmrābhyāṁ kaitavyaṁ samudaikṣata.

1. Sañjaya said, "Having heard those words of Duryodhana, the best among the Bharatas (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), with eyes exceedingly red, surveyed the deception."
स केशवमभिप्रेक्ष्य गुडाकेशो महायशाः ।
अभ्यभाषत कैतव्यं प्रगृह्य विपुलं भुजम् ॥२॥
2. sa keśavamabhiprekṣya guḍākeśo mahāyaśāḥ ,
abhyabhāṣata kaitavyaṁ pragṛhya vipulaṁ bhujam.

abhyabhāṣata kaitavyam pragṛhya vipulam bhujam

2. Guḍākeśa (Arjuna), of great renown, having looked at Keśava (Krishna), spoke concerning the deception, having grasped his mighty arm.
स्ववीर्यं यः समाश्रित्य समाह्वयति वै परान् ।
अभीतः पूरयञ्शक्तिं स वै पुरुष उच्यते ॥३॥
3. svavīryaṁ yaḥ samāśritya samāhvayati vai parān ,
abhītaḥ pūrayañśaktiṁ sa vai puruṣa ucyate.
3. svavīryam yaḥ samāśritya samāhvayati vai parān
abhītaḥ pūrayan śaktim saḥ vai puruṣaḥ ucyate
3. yaḥ svavīryam samāśritya abhītaḥ śaktim pūrayan

3. The one who, relying on his own valor, certainly challenges others, fearless and manifesting his strength (śakti), he is truly called a (real) person (puruṣa).
परवीर्यं समाश्रित्य यः समाह्वयते परान् ।
क्षत्रबन्धुरशक्तत्वाल्लोके स पुरुषाधमः ॥४॥
4. paravīryaṁ samāśritya yaḥ samāhvayate parān ,
kṣatrabandhuraśaktatvālloke sa puruṣādhamaḥ.

4. But he who, relying on another's strength, challenges others, that kṣatriya-kinsman, due to his inability, is considered the lowest of persons (puruṣa) in the world.
स त्वं परेषां वीर्येण मन्यसे वीर्यमात्मनः ।
स्वयं कापुरुषो मूढः परांश्च क्षेप्तुमिच्छसि ॥५॥
5. sa tvaṁ pareṣāṁ vīryeṇa manyase vīryamātmanaḥ ,
svayaṁ kāpuruṣo mūḍhaḥ parāṁśca kṣeptumicchasi.
5. sa tvam pareṣām vīryeṇa manyase vīryam ātmanaḥ
svayam kāpuruṣaḥ mūḍhaḥ parān ca kṣeptum icchasi
5. tvam saḥ mūḍhaḥ kāpuruṣaḥ pareṣām vīryeṇa ātmanaḥ
vīryam manyase svayam parān ca kṣeptum icchasi
5. You, a foolish and cowardly man, consider the valor of others to be your own (ātman), and you wish to insult others.
यस्त्वं वृद्धं सर्वराज्ञां हितबुद्धिं जितेन्द्रियम् ।
मरणाय महाबुद्धिं दीक्षयित्वा विकत्थसे ॥६॥
6. yastvaṁ vṛddhaṁ sarvarājñāṁ hitabuddhiṁ jitendriyam ,
maraṇāya mahābuddhiṁ dīkṣayitvā vikatthase.
6. yaḥ tvam vṛddham sarvarājñām hitabuddhim jitendriyam
maraṇāya mahābuddhim dīkṣayitvā vikatthase
6. tvam yaḥ sarvarājñām vṛddham hitabuddhim jitendriyam
mahābuddhim maraṇāya dīkṣayitvā vikatthase
6. You, who, having consecrated for death the venerable, well-wishing, self-controlled (jitendriyam), and highly intelligent Bhishma, the senior among all kings, then boast (vikatthase).
भावस्ते विदितोऽस्माभिर्दुर्बुद्धे कुलपांसन ।
न हनिष्यन्ति गङ्गेयं पाण्डवा घृणयेति च ॥७॥
7. bhāvaste vidito'smābhirdurbuddhe kulapāṁsana ,
na haniṣyanti gaṅgeyaṁ pāṇḍavā ghṛṇayeti ca.
7. bhāvaḥ te viditaḥ asmābhiḥ durbuddhe kulapāṃsana
na haniṣyanti gāṅgeyam pāṇḍavāḥ ghṛṇayā iti ca
7. durbuddhe kulapāṃsana te bhāvaḥ asmābhiḥ viditaḥ
pāṇḍavāḥ ghṛṇayā gāṅgeyam na haniṣyanti iti ca
7. O evil-minded disgracer of your family! Your intention (bhāva) is known to us: "The Pandavas will not kill this son of Ganga (Bhishma) out of compassion (ghṛṇā)."
यस्य वीर्यं समाश्रित्य धार्तराष्ट्र विकत्थसे ।
हन्तास्मि प्रथमं भीष्मं मिषतां सर्वधन्विनाम् ॥८॥
8. yasya vīryaṁ samāśritya dhārtarāṣṭra vikatthase ,
hantāsmi prathamaṁ bhīṣmaṁ miṣatāṁ sarvadhanvinām.

hantā asmi prathamam bhīṣmam miṣatām sarvadhanvinām
8. dhārtarāṣṭra! yasya vīryam samāśritya tvam vikatthase
asmi prathamam sarvadhanvinām miṣatām bhīṣmam hantā
8. O son of Dhritarashtra (dhārtarāṣṭra)! You boast, relying on whose valor; (therefore) I will first kill Bhishma while all archers (sarvadhanvinām) are watching.
कैतव्य गत्वा भरतान्समेत्य सुयोधनं धार्तराष्ट्रं ब्रवीहि ।
तथेत्याह अर्जुनः सव्यसाची निशाव्यपाये भविता विमर्दः ॥९॥
9. kaitavya gatvā bharatānsametya; suyodhanaṁ dhārtarāṣṭraṁ bravīhi ,
tathetyāha arjunaḥ savyasācī; niśāvyapāye bhavitā vimardaḥ.

9. kaitavya,
bharatān dhārtarāṣṭraṃ suyodhanaṃ gatvā sametya bravīhi savyasācī arjunaḥ 'niśāvyapāye vimardaḥ bhavitā' iti tathā āha
9. O deceitful one, go and meet Suyodhana, the son of Dhritarashtra, among the Bharatas (Kauravas), and tell him: 'Thus said Arjuna, the ambidextrous one: "So be it; the great battle will occur at the end of the night."'
यद्वोऽब्रवीद्वाक्यमदीनसत्त्वो मध्ये कुरूणां हर्षयन्सत्यसंधः ।
अहं हन्ता पाण्डवानामनीकं शाल्वेयकांश्चेति ममैष भारः ॥१०॥
10. yadvo'bravīdvākyamadīnasattvo; madhye kurūṇāṁ harṣayansatyasaṁdhaḥ ,
ahaṁ hantā pāṇḍavānāmanīkaṁ; śālveyakāṁśceti mamaiṣa bhāraḥ.
10. yat vaḥ abravīt vākyam adīnasattvaḥ
madhye kurūṇām harṣayan satyasaṃdhaḥ
aham hantā pāṇḍavānām anīkam
śālveyakān ca iti mama eṣaḥ bhāraḥ
10. adīnasattvaḥ satyasaṃdhaḥ harṣayan kurūṇām
madhye vaḥ yat vākyam abravīt (tat
śṛṇu) 'aham pāṇḍavānām anīkam śālveyakān
ca hantā (asmi); eṣaḥ mama bhāraḥ' iti
10. What that resolute and truth-bound one said to you, while delighting the Kurus in their midst: 'I shall be the killer of the Pandavas' army and also of the Salveyakas; this indeed is my task (bhāra).'
हन्यामहं द्रोणमृते हि लोकं न ते भयं विद्यते पाण्डवेभ्यः ।
ततो हि ते लब्धतमं च राज्यं क्षयं गताः पाण्डवाश्चेति भावः ॥११॥
11. hanyāmahaṁ droṇamṛte hi lokaṁ; na te bhayaṁ vidyate pāṇḍavebhyaḥ ,
tato hi te labdhatamaṁ ca rājyaṁ; kṣayaṁ gatāḥ pāṇḍavāśceti bhāvaḥ.
11. hanyām aham droṇam ṛte hi lokam na
te bhayam vidyate pāṇḍavebhyaḥ
tataḥ hi te labdhatamam ca rājyam
kṣayam gatāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ ca iti bhāvaḥ
11. (aham) hi lokam ṛte droṇam hanyām te
pāṇḍavebhyaḥ bhayam na vidyate tataḥ
hi te rājyam ca labdhatamam; pāṇḍavāḥ
ca kṣayam gatāḥ iti (eṣaḥ) bhāvaḥ
11. Indeed, I would kill Drona, were it not for the sake of the people (the common good/implications). You (Duryodhana) have no fear from the Pandavas. Therefore, your kingdom will be completely attained, and the Pandavas will surely have met their destruction. This is my firm belief (bhāva).
स दर्पपूर्णो न समीक्षसे त्वमनर्थमात्मन्यपि वर्तमानम् ।
तस्मादहं ते प्रथमं समूहे हन्ता समक्षं कुरुवृद्धमेव ॥१२॥
12. sa darpapūrṇo na samīkṣase tva;manarthamātmanyapi vartamānam ,
tasmādahaṁ te prathamaṁ samūhe; hantā samakṣaṁ kuruvṛddhameva.
12. saḥ darpapūrṇaḥ na samīkṣase tvam
anartham ātmani api vartamānam
tasmāt aham te prathamam samūhe
hantā samakṣam kuruvṛddham eva
12. saḥ darpapūrṇaḥ tvam ātmani api
vartamānam anartham na samīkṣase
tasmāt aham te samūhe prathamam
samakṣam kuruvṛddham eva hantā (asmi)
12. You, indeed, being full of arrogance, do not see the misfortune that is present even within yourself. Therefore, I shall be the foremost slayer in this assembly, in the presence of the Kuru elder (Bhishma) himself.
सूर्योदये युक्तसेनः प्रतीक्ष्य ध्वजी रथी रक्ष च सत्यसंधम् ।
अहं हि वः पश्यतां द्वीपमेनं रथाद्भीष्मं पातयितास्मि बाणैः ॥१३॥
13. sūryodaye yuktasenaḥ pratīkṣya; dhvajī rathī rakṣa ca satyasaṁdham ,
ahaṁ hi vaḥ paśyatāṁ dvīpamenaṁ; rathādbhīṣmaṁ pātayitāsmi bāṇaiḥ.

dhvajī rathī rakṣa ca satyasaṃdham
aham hi vaḥ paśyatām dvīpam enam
rathāt bhīṣmam pātayitā asmi bāṇaiḥ

sūryodaye yuktasenaḥ pratīkṣya
dhvajī rathī satyasaṃdham ca rakṣa
13. Having waited for sunrise with your army arrayed, protect, O Duryodhana, the banner-bearer, the charioteer, and the one true to his word (dharma)! For I, while you all watch, will strike down this formidable (island-like) Bhishma from his chariot with arrows.
श्वोभूते कत्थनावाक्यं विज्ञास्यति सुयोधनः ।
अर्दितं शरजालेन मया दृष्ट्वा पितामहम् ॥१४॥
14. śvobhūte katthanāvākyaṁ vijñāsyati suyodhanaḥ ,
arditaṁ śarajālena mayā dṛṣṭvā pitāmaham.
14. śvobhūte katthana-vākyaṃ vijñāsyati suyodhanaḥ
arditam śarajālena mayā dṛṣṭvā pitāmaham
14. śvobhūte suyodhanaḥ mayā śarajālena arditam
pitāmaham dṛṣṭvā katthana-vākyaṃ vijñāsyati
14. On the morrow, Duryodhana will comprehend these boastful words, having seen the grandfather (Bhīṣma) afflicted by my multitude of arrows.
यदुक्तश्च सभामध्ये पुरुषो ह्रस्वदर्शनः ।
क्रुद्धेन भीमसेनेन भ्राता दुःशासनस्तव ॥१५॥
15. yaduktaśca sabhāmadhye puruṣo hrasvadarśanaḥ ,
kruddhena bhīmasenena bhrātā duḥśāsanastava.
15. yat uktaḥ ca sabhāmadhye puruṣaḥ hrasvadarśanaḥ
kruddhena bhīmasenena bhrātā duḥśāsanaḥ tava
15. hrasvadarśanaḥ puruṣa sabhāmadhye kruddhena
bhīmasenena tava bhrātā duḥśāsanaḥ yat uktaḥ ca
15. And what was said in the assembly, O narrow-minded person (puruṣa), by the enraged Bhimasena to your brother Duhshasana...
अधर्मज्ञो नित्यवैरी पापबुद्धिर्नृशंसकृत् ।
सत्यां प्रतिज्ञां नचिराद्रक्ष्यसे तां सुयोधन ॥१६॥
16. adharmajño nityavairī pāpabuddhirnṛśaṁsakṛt ,
satyāṁ pratijñāṁ nacirādrakṣyase tāṁ suyodhana.
16. adharma-jñaḥ nitya-vairī pāpabuddhiḥ nṛśaṃsakṛt
satyām pratijñām na cirāt rakṣyase tām suyodhana
16. suyodhana adharma-jñaḥ nitya-vairī pāpabuddhiḥ
nṛśaṃsakṛt tām satyām pratijñām cirāt na rakṣyase
16. O Duryodhana, you who are ignorant of natural law (dharma), a perpetual enemy, evil-minded, and cruel-hearted—you will not long protect that true vow (pratijñā).
अभिमानस्य दर्पस्य क्रोधपारुष्ययोस्तथा ।
नैष्ठुर्यस्यावलेपस्य आत्मसंभावनस्य च ॥१७॥
17. abhimānasya darpasya krodhapāruṣyayostathā ,
naiṣṭhuryasyāvalepasya ātmasaṁbhāvanasya ca.
17. abhimānasya darpasya krodhapāruṣyayoḥ tathā
naiṣṭhuryasya avalepasya ātmasaṃbhāvanasya ca
17. abhimānasya darpasya krodhapāruṣyayoḥ tathā
naiṣṭhuryasya avalepasya ātmasaṃbhāvanasya ca
17. Of pride (abhimāna), arrogance, and also of wrath and harshness; of cruelty, haughtiness, and self-conceit.
नृशंसतायास्तैक्ष्ण्यस्य धर्मविद्वेषणस्य च ।
अधर्मस्यातिवादस्य वृद्धातिक्रमणस्य च ॥१८॥
18. nṛśaṁsatāyāstaikṣṇyasya dharmavidveṣaṇasya ca ,
adharmasyātivādasya vṛddhātikramaṇasya ca.
18. nṛśaṃsatāyāḥ taikṣṇyasya dharmavidveṣaṇasya ca
adharmasya ativādasya vṛddhātīkramaṇasya ca
18. nṛśaṃsatāyāḥ taikṣṇyasya dharmavidveṣaṇasya ca
adharmasya ativādasya vṛddhātīkramaṇasya ca
18. Of inhumanity, fierceness, and hostility towards natural law (dharma); of unrighteousness (adharma), abusive speech, and transgressing against elders.
दर्शनस्य च वक्रस्य कृत्स्नस्यापनयस्य च ।
द्रक्ष्यसि त्वं फलं तीव्रमचिरेण सुयोधन ॥१९॥
19. darśanasya ca vakrasya kṛtsnasyāpanayasya ca ,
drakṣyasi tvaṁ phalaṁ tīvramacireṇa suyodhana.
19. darśanasya ca vakrasya kṛtsnasya apanayasya ca
drakṣyasi tvam phalam tīvram acireṇa suyodhana
19. tvam suyodhana acireṇa vakrasya darśanasya ca
kṛtsnasya apanayasya ca tīvram phalam drakṣyasi
19. And of crooked vision and complete misconduct; you, Suyodhana, will soon see the severe consequence.
वासुदेवद्वितीये हि मयि क्रुद्धे नराधिप ।
आशा ते जीविते मूढ राज्ये वा केन हेतुना ॥२०॥
20. vāsudevadvitīye hi mayi kruddhe narādhipa ,
āśā te jīvite mūḍha rājye vā kena hetunā.
20. vāsudevadvitīye hi mayi kruddhe narādhipa
āśā te jīvite mūḍha rājye vā kena hetunā
20. hi narādhipa mūḍha mayi vāsudevadvitīye kruddhe,
te āśā jīvite vā rājye kena hetunā
20. Indeed, O king of men (narādhipa), O foolish one (mūḍha), when I am enraged and Vāsudeva (Krishna) is my companion, by what reason do you have hope in life or in the kingdom?
शान्ते भीष्मे तथा द्रोणे सूतपुत्रे च पातिते ।
निराशो जीविते राज्ये पुत्रेषु च भविष्यसि ॥२१॥
21. śānte bhīṣme tathā droṇe sūtaputre ca pātite ,
nirāśo jīvite rājye putreṣu ca bhaviṣyasi.
21. śānte bhīṣme tathā droṇe sūtaputre ca pātite
nirāśaḥ jīvite rājye putreṣu ca bhaviṣyasi
21. bhīṣme tathā droṇe ca sūtaputre pātite (sati) śānte,

21. When Bhishma, Drona, and the son of Sūta (Karṇa) have fallen, you will become devoid of hope regarding your life, your kingdom, and your sons.
भ्रातॄणां निधनं दृष्ट्वा पुत्राणां च सुयोधन ।
भीमसेनेन निहतो दुष्कृतानि स्मरिष्यसि ॥२२॥
22. bhrātṝṇāṁ nidhanaṁ dṛṣṭvā putrāṇāṁ ca suyodhana ,
bhīmasenena nihato duṣkṛtāni smariṣyasi.
22. bhrātṝṇām nidhanam dṛṣṭvā putrāṇām ca suyodhana
bhīmasenena nihataḥ duṣkṛtāni smariṣyasi
22. suyodhana,
bhrātṝṇām ca putrāṇām nidhanam dṛṣṭvā,
bhīmasenena nihataḥ (san),
duṣkṛtāni smariṣyasi
22. O Suyodhana, after witnessing the demise of your brothers and sons, and yourself having been slain by Bhimasena, you will recall your misdeeds.
न द्वितीयां प्रतिज्ञां हि प्रतिज्ञास्यति केशवः ।
सत्यं ब्रवीम्यहं ह्येतत्सर्वं सत्यं भविष्यति ॥२३॥
23. na dvitīyāṁ pratijñāṁ hi pratijñāsyati keśavaḥ ,
satyaṁ bravīmyahaṁ hyetatsarvaṁ satyaṁ bhaviṣyati.
23. na dvitīyām pratijñām hi pratijñāsyati keśavaḥ
satyam bravīmi aham hi etat sarvam satyam bhaviṣyati
23. keśavaḥ dvitīyām pratijñām na hi pratijñāsyati.
aham hi etat satyam bravīmi; sarvam satyam bhaviṣyati.
23. Indeed, Keśava (Krishna) will not make a second vow. I speak this truth; all of this will surely come to pass.
इत्युक्तः कैतवो राजंस्तद्वाक्यमुपधार्य च ।
अनुज्ञातो निववृते पुनरेव यथागतम् ॥२४॥
24. ityuktaḥ kaitavo rājaṁstadvākyamupadhārya ca ,
anujñāto nivavṛte punareva yathāgatam.
24. iti uktaḥ kaitavaḥ rājan tat vākyam upadhārya
ca anujñātaḥ nivavṛte punar eva yathāgatam
24. rājan,
iti uktaḥ kaitavaḥ (Śakuni),
tat vākyam upadhārya ca,
anujñātaḥ (san),
yathāgatam punar eva nivavṛte.
24. O King, the deceitful one (Śakuni), thus addressed, after carefully considering those words and having been granted leave, returned exactly as he had come.
उपावृत्य तु पाण्डुभ्यः कैतव्यो धृतराष्ट्रजम् ।
गत्वा यथोक्तं तत्सर्वमुवाच कुरुसंसदि ॥२५॥
25. upāvṛtya tu pāṇḍubhyaḥ kaitavyo dhṛtarāṣṭrajam ,
gatvā yathoktaṁ tatsarvamuvāca kurusaṁsadi.
25. upāvṛtya tu pāṇḍubhyaḥ kaitavyaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭrajam
gatvā yathoktam tat sarvam uvāca kurusaṃsadi
25. kaitavyaḥ tu pāṇḍubhyaḥ upāvṛtya dhṛtarāṣṭrajam
gatvā kurusaṃsadi yathoktam tat sarvam uvāca
25. Having returned from the Pāṇḍavas, Kṛtavarman (Kaitavya) went to the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (Duryodhana) and, in the assembly of the Kurus, related everything that had been said.
केशवार्जुनयोर्वाक्यं निशम्य भरतर्षभः ।
दुःशासनं च कर्णं च शकुनिं चाभ्यभाषत ॥२६॥
26. keśavārjunayorvākyaṁ niśamya bharatarṣabhaḥ ,
duḥśāsanaṁ ca karṇaṁ ca śakuniṁ cābhyabhāṣata.
26. keśavārjunayoḥ vākyam niśamya bharatarṣabhaḥ
duḥśāsanam ca karṇam ca śakunim ca abhyabhāṣata
26. bharatarṣabhaḥ keśavārjunayoḥ vākyam niśamya
duḥśāsanam ca karṇam ca śakunim ca abhyabhāṣata
26. The bull among the Bhāratas (Duryodhana), having heard the words of Keśava (Kṛṣṇa) and Arjuna, then addressed Duḥśāsana, Karṇa, and Śakuni.
आज्ञापयत राज्ञश्च बलं मित्रबलं तथा ।
यथा प्रागुदयात्सर्वा युक्ता तिष्ठत्यनीकिनी ॥२७॥
27. ājñāpayata rājñaśca balaṁ mitrabalaṁ tathā ,
yathā prāgudayātsarvā yuktā tiṣṭhatyanīkinī.
27. ājñāpayata rājñaḥ ca balam mitrabalam tathā
yathā prāk udayāt sarvā yuktā tiṣṭhati anīkinī
27. (yūyam) rājñaḥ balam ca mitrabalam tathā ājñāpayata
yathā sarvā anīkinī prāk udayāt yuktā tiṣṭhati
27. Command the king's army and the allied forces so that the entire host stands arrayed and ready before sunrise.
ततः कर्णसमादिष्टा दूताः प्रत्वरिता रथैः ।
उष्ट्रवामीभिरप्यन्ये सदश्वैश्च महाजवैः ॥२८॥
28. tataḥ karṇasamādiṣṭā dūtāḥ pratvaritā rathaiḥ ,
uṣṭravāmībhirapyanye sadaśvaiśca mahājavaiḥ.

28. Then, messengers commanded by Karṇa hurried away in chariots. Others, too, sped off on camels, mares, and excellent, swiftly-moving horses.
तूर्णं परिययुः सेनां कृत्स्नां कर्णस्य शासनात् ।
आज्ञापयन्तो राज्ञस्तान्योगः प्रागुदयादिति ॥२९॥
29. tūrṇaṁ pariyayuḥ senāṁ kṛtsnāṁ karṇasya śāsanāt ,
ājñāpayanto rājñastānyogaḥ prāgudayāditi.
29. tūrṇam pariyayuḥ senām kṛtsnām karṇasya śāsanāt
ājñāpayantaḥ rājñaḥ tān yogaḥ prāk udayāt iti
29. karṇasya śāsanāt (te) tūrṇam kṛtsnām senām pariyayuḥ,
tān rājñaḥ "yogaḥ prāk udayāt" iti ājñāpayantaḥ
29. By Karṇa's command, they quickly went throughout the entire army, ordering those kings that the engagement (yoga) should commence before dawn.
