संजय उवाच ।
एवमेतन्महाराज यथा वदसि भारत ।
युद्धे विनाशः क्षत्रस्य गाण्डीवेन प्रदृश्यते ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
evametanmahārāja yathā vadasi bhārata ,
yuddhe vināśaḥ kṣatrasya gāṇḍīvena pradṛśyate.

1. Saṃjaya said: "O great king (mahārāja), O Bhārata, what you say is indeed true: the destruction of the warrior class (kṣatra) in battle by Gāṇḍīva is clearly seen."
इदं तु नाभिजानामि तव धीरस्य नित्यशः ।
यत्पुत्रवशमागच्छेः सत्त्वज्ञः सव्यसाचिनः ॥२॥
2. idaṁ tu nābhijānāmi tava dhīrasya nityaśaḥ ,
yatputravaśamāgaccheḥ sattvajñaḥ savyasācinaḥ.
2. idam tu na abhijānāmi tava dhīrasya nityaśaḥ yat
putra-vaśam āgaccheḥ sattva-jñaḥ savya-sācinaḥ
2. But I do not understand this about you, who are wise, that you constantly yield to the control of your son, even though you know the true strength (sattva) of Savyasācin (Arjuna).
नैष कालो महाराज तव शश्वत्कृतागसः ।
त्वया ह्येवादितः पार्था निकृता भरतर्षभ ॥३॥
3. naiṣa kālo mahārāja tava śaśvatkṛtāgasaḥ ,
tvayā hyevāditaḥ pārthā nikṛtā bharatarṣabha.
3. na eṣaḥ kālaḥ mahārāja tava śaśvat-kṛta-āgasaḥ
tvayā hi eva āditaḥ pārthāḥ nikṛtāḥ bharata-ṛṣabha
3. O great king (mahārāja), this is not the time for you, who have constantly committed wrongs. Indeed, the Pārthas were wronged by you from the very beginning, O best of Bhāratas.
पिता श्रेष्ठः सुहृद्यश्च सम्यक्प्रणिहितात्मवान् ।
आस्थेयं हि हितं तेन न द्रोग्धा गुरुरुच्यते ॥४॥
4. pitā śreṣṭhaḥ suhṛdyaśca samyakpraṇihitātmavān ,
āstheyaṁ hi hitaṁ tena na drogdhā gururucyate.
4. pitā śreṣṭhaḥ suhṛdyaḥ ca samyak-praṇihita-ātmavān
āstheyam hi hitam tena na drogdhā guruḥ ucyate
4. A father who is superior and a true well-wisher, one whose self (ātman) is well-directed, indeed, beneficial advice should be followed from him. One who is not a deceiver is called a preceptor (guru).
इदं जितमिदं लब्धमिति श्रुत्वा पराजितान् ।
द्यूतकाले महाराज स्मयसे स्म कुमारवत् ॥५॥
5. idaṁ jitamidaṁ labdhamiti śrutvā parājitān ,
dyūtakāle mahārāja smayase sma kumāravat.
5. idam jitam idam labdham iti śrutvā parājitān
dyūtakāle mahārāja smayase sma kumāravat
5. O great king, during the gambling match, upon hearing 'This has been conquered! This has been obtained!' you used to smile like a boy at the defeated ones.
परुषाण्युच्यमानान्स्म पुरा पार्थानुपेक्षसे ।
कृत्स्नं राज्यं जयन्तीति प्रपातं नानुपश्यसि ॥६॥
6. paruṣāṇyucyamānānsma purā pārthānupekṣase ,
kṛtsnaṁ rājyaṁ jayantīti prapātaṁ nānupaśyasi.
6. paruṣāṇi ucyamānān sma purā pārthān upekṣase
kṛtsnam rājyam jayanti iti prapātam na anupaśyasi
6. Previously, you used to disregard the sons of Pṛthā (Pāṇḍavas) when harsh words were being spoken to them. Thinking 'they are conquering the entire kingdom,' you do not perceive the precipice (prāpāta) that awaits.
पित्र्यं राज्यं महाराज कुरवस्ते सजाङ्गलाः ।
अथ वीरैर्जितां भूमिमखिलां प्रत्यपद्यथाः ॥७॥
7. pitryaṁ rājyaṁ mahārāja kuravaste sajāṅgalāḥ ,
atha vīrairjitāṁ bhūmimakhilāṁ pratyapadyathāḥ.
7. pitryam rājyam mahārāja kuravaḥ te sa-jāṅgalāḥ
atha vīraiḥ jitām bhūmim akhilām prati apadyathāḥ
7. O great king, your ancestral kingdom, along with the Jāṅgala region, belonged to the Kurus. Moreover, you then took possession of the entire land that had been conquered by heroes.
बाहुवीर्यार्जिता भूमिस्तव पार्थैर्निवेदिता ।
मयेदं कृतमित्येव मन्यसे राजसत्तम ॥८॥
8. bāhuvīryārjitā bhūmistava pārthairniveditā ,
mayedaṁ kṛtamityeva manyase rājasattama.
8. bāhuvīryārjitā bhūmiḥ tava pārthaiḥ niveditā
mayā idam kṛtam iti eva manyase rājasattama
8. The land acquired by the strength of arms was presented to you by the sons of Pṛthā (Pāṇḍavas). Yet, O best of kings, you think only 'I have done this!'
ग्रस्तान्गन्धर्वराजेन मज्जतो ह्यप्लवेऽम्भसि ।
आनिनाय पुनः पार्थः पुत्रांस्ते राजसत्तम ॥९॥
9. grastāngandharvarājena majjato hyaplave'mbhasi ,
ānināya punaḥ pārthaḥ putrāṁste rājasattama.
9. grastān gandharvarājena majjataḥ hi aplave ambhasi
ānināya punaḥ pārthaḥ putrān te rājasattama
9. O best of kings, Arjuna indeed brought your sons back when they were sinking helplessly in the water, having been seized by the Gandharva king.
कुमारवच्च स्मयसे द्यूते विनिकृतेषु यत् ।
पाण्डवेषु वनं राजन्प्रव्रजत्सु पुनः पुनः ॥१०॥
10. kumāravacca smayase dyūte vinikṛteṣu yat ,
pāṇḍaveṣu vanaṁ rājanpravrajatsu punaḥ punaḥ.
10. kumāravat ca smayase dyūte vinikṛteṣu yat
pāṇḍaveṣu vanam rājan pravrajatsu punaḥ punaḥ
10. O King, you smile like a child again and again because the Pāṇḍavas, having been cheated in the dice game, were repeatedly exiled to the forest.
प्रवर्षतः शरव्रातानर्जुनस्य शितान्बहून् ।
अप्यर्णवा विशुष्येयुः किं पुनर्मांसयोनयः ॥११॥
11. pravarṣataḥ śaravrātānarjunasya śitānbahūn ,
apyarṇavā viśuṣyeyuḥ kiṁ punarmāṁsayonayaḥ.
11. pravarṣataḥ śaravrātān arjunasya śitān bahūn
api arṇavāḥ viśuṣyeyuḥ kim punaḥ māṃsayonayaḥ
11. Even oceans would dry up from Arjuna showering many sharp multitudes of arrows; what then to say of those born of flesh?
अस्यतां फल्गुनः श्रेष्ठो गाण्डीवं धनुषां वरम् ।
केशवः सर्वभूतानां चक्राणां च सुदर्शनम् ॥१२॥
12. asyatāṁ phalgunaḥ śreṣṭho gāṇḍīvaṁ dhanuṣāṁ varam ,
keśavaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ cakrāṇāṁ ca sudarśanam.
12. asyatām phalgunaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ gāṇḍīvam dhanuṣām
varam keśavaḥ sarvabhūtānām cakrāṇām ca sudarśanam
12. Let Arjuna be declared the most excellent, the Gaṇḍīva the best of bows. Keśava (is the best) of all beings, and Sudarśana (is the best) of discus weapons.
वानरो रोचमानश्च केतुः केतुमतां वरः ।
एवमेतानि सरथो वहञ्श्वेतहयो रणे ।
क्षपयिष्यति नो राजन्कालचक्रमिवोद्यतम् ॥१३॥
13. vānaro rocamānaśca ketuḥ ketumatāṁ varaḥ ,
evametāni saratho vahañśvetahayo raṇe ,
kṣapayiṣyati no rājankālacakramivodyatam.
13. vānaraḥ rocamānaḥ ca ketuḥ ketumatām
varaḥ evam etāni sarathaḥ
vahan śvetahayaḥ raṇe kṣapayiṣyati
naḥ rājan kālacakram iva udyatam
13. O King, the brilliant monkey banner, which is the finest among all banners, adorns his chariot. Thus, with his chariot and white horses, bearing these (omens of impending destruction), he will destroy us in battle, just like an upraised wheel of time.
तस्याद्य वसुधा राजन्निखिला भरतर्षभ ।
यस्य भीमार्जुनौ योधौ स राजा राजसत्तम ॥१४॥
14. tasyādya vasudhā rājannikhilā bharatarṣabha ,
yasya bhīmārjunau yodhau sa rājā rājasattama.
14. tasya adya vasudhā rājan nikhilā bharatarṣabha
yasya bhīmārjunau yodhau saḥ rājā rājasattama
14. O King, O best among the Bharatas, all the earth is now his, for that king, whose warriors are Bhīma and Arjuna, is truly the best of kings.
तथा भीमहतप्रायां मज्जन्तीं तव वाहिनीम् ।
दुर्योधनमुखा दृष्ट्वा क्षयं यास्यन्ति कौरवाः ॥१५॥
15. tathā bhīmahataprāyāṁ majjantīṁ tava vāhinīm ,
duryodhanamukhā dṛṣṭvā kṣayaṁ yāsyanti kauravāḥ.
15. tathā bhīmahataprāyām majjantīm tava vāhinīm
duryodhanamukhāḥ dṛṣṭvā kṣayam yāsyanti kauravāḥ
15. Similarly, when the Kauravas, led by Duryodhana, see your army largely destroyed by Bhīma and sinking, they will meet their destruction.
न हि भीमभयाद्भीता लप्स्यन्ते विजयं विभो ।
तव पुत्रा महाराज राजानश्चानुसारिणः ॥१६॥
16. na hi bhīmabhayādbhītā lapsyante vijayaṁ vibho ,
tava putrā mahārāja rājānaścānusāriṇaḥ.
16. na hi bhīmabhayāt bhītāḥ lapsyante vijayam
vibho tava putrāḥ mahārāja rājānaḥ ca anusāriṇaḥ
16. Indeed, O Lord, your sons, O great king, and the kings who follow them, being terrified by Bhīma, will not achieve victory.
मत्स्यास्त्वामद्य नार्चन्ति पाञ्चालाश्च सकेकयाः ।
शाल्वेयाः शूरसेनाश्च सर्वे त्वामवजानते ।
पार्थं ह्येते गताः सर्वे वीर्यज्ञास्तस्य धीमतः ॥१७॥
17. matsyāstvāmadya nārcanti pāñcālāśca sakekayāḥ ,
śālveyāḥ śūrasenāśca sarve tvāmavajānate ,
pārthaṁ hyete gatāḥ sarve vīryajñāstasya dhīmataḥ.
17. matsyāḥ tvām adya na arcanti pāñcālāḥ
ca sa-kekayāḥ | śālveyāḥ śūrasenāḥ ca
sarve tvām avajānate | pārtham hi
ete gatāḥ sarve vīryajñāḥ tasya dhīmataḥ
17. The Matsyas, the Pancalas with the Kekayas, the Salveyas, and the Surasenas do not honor you today; all of them disrespect you. Indeed, all these people, knowing the valor of that intelligent Arjuna, have gone over to him.
अनर्हानेव तु वधे धर्मयुक्तान्विकर्मणा ।
सर्वोपायैर्नियन्तव्यः सानुगः पापपूरुषः ।
तव पुत्रो महाराज नात्र शोचितुमर्हसि ॥१८॥
18. anarhāneva tu vadhe dharmayuktānvikarmaṇā ,
sarvopāyairniyantavyaḥ sānugaḥ pāpapūruṣaḥ ,
tava putro mahārāja nātra śocitumarhasi.
18. anarhān eva tu vadhe dharma-yuktān
vi-karmaṇā | sarva-upāyaiḥ niyantavyaḥ
sa-anugaḥ pāpa-pūruṣaḥ | tava
putraḥ mahā-rāja na atra śocitum arhasi
18. But when the righteous (dharma-yuktān) were subjected to destruction (vadha) by the unworthy (anarhān) through wicked deeds (vikarmaṇā), then that sinful man (pāpa-puruṣa), along with his followers, had to be restrained by all means. O great king, you should not grieve for your son in this matter.
द्यूतकाले मया चोक्तं विदुरेण च धीमता ।
यदिदं ते विलपितं पाण्डवान्प्रति भारत ।
अनीशेनेव राजेन्द्र सर्वमेतन्निरर्थकम् ॥१९॥
19. dyūtakāle mayā coktaṁ vidureṇa ca dhīmatā ,
yadidaṁ te vilapitaṁ pāṇḍavānprati bhārata ,
anīśeneva rājendra sarvametannirarthakam.
19. dyūta-kāle mayā ca uktam vidureṇa ca
dhīmatā | yat idam te vilapitam
pāṇḍavān prati bhārata | a-īśena iva
rāja-indra sarvam etat nirarthakam
19. During the game of dice, both I and the intelligent Vidura told you, O Bharata, that this lamentation of yours concerning the Pandavas is now like that of a powerless man, O king of kings, and all of it is meaningless.
