तं पातितं ततो दृष्ट्वा महाशालमिवोद्गतम् ।
प्रहृष्टमनसः सर्वे बभूवुस्तत्र पाण्डवाः ॥१॥

taṁ pātitaṁ tato dṛṣṭvā mahāśālamivodgatam ,
prahṛṣṭamanasaḥ sarve babhūvustatra pāṇḍavāḥ.

1. Sañjaya said: 'Then, having seen him, who was like a towering great śāla tree, fallen, all the Pāṇḍavas there became exceedingly joyful in their minds.'
उन्मत्तमिव मातङ्गं सिंहेन विनिपातितम् ।
ददृशुर्हृष्टरोमाणः सर्वे ते चापि सोमकाः ॥२॥
2. unmattamiva mātaṅgaṁ siṁhena vinipātitam ,
dadṛśurhṛṣṭaromāṇaḥ sarve te cāpi somakāḥ.
2. unmattam iva mātaṅgam siṃhena vinipātitam
dadṛśuḥ hṛṣṭaromāṇaḥ sarve te ca api somakāḥ
2. sarve te api somakāḥ hṛṣṭaromāṇaḥ unmattam

2. All those Somakas, with their hair standing on end, saw him struck down by a lion, just like a mad elephant.
ततो दुर्योधनं हत्वा भीमसेनः प्रतापवान् ।
पतितं कौरवेन्द्रं तमुपगम्येदमब्रवीत् ॥३॥
3. tato duryodhanaṁ hatvā bhīmasenaḥ pratāpavān ,
patitaṁ kauravendraṁ tamupagamyedamabravīt.
3. tataḥ duryodhanam hatvā bhīmasenaḥ pratāpavān
patitam kauravendram tam upagamya idam abravīt
3. tataḥ pratāpavān bhīmasenaḥ duryodhanam hatvā

3. Then, the mighty Bhimasena, having killed Duryodhana, approached that fallen chief of the Kurus and spoke these words.
गौर्गौरिति पुरा मन्द द्रौपदीमेकवाससम् ।
यत्सभायां हसन्नस्मांस्तदा वदसि दुर्मते ।
तस्यावहासस्य फलमद्य त्वं समवाप्नुहि ॥४॥
4. gaurgauriti purā manda draupadīmekavāsasam ,
yatsabhāyāṁ hasannasmāṁstadā vadasi durmate ,
tasyāvahāsasya phalamadya tvaṁ samavāpnuhi.
4. gauḥ gauḥ iti purā manda draupadīm
ekavāsasam yat sabhāyām hasan asmān
tadā vadasi durmate tasya avahāsasya
phalam adya tvam samavāpnuhi
4. manda durmate purā yat sabhāyām ekavāsasam draupadīm asmān ca hasan tadā gauḥ gauḥ iti vadasi,
tasya avahāsasya phalam adya tvam samavāpnuhi
4. O dull-witted and evil-minded one, because you formerly, in the assembly, laughing, addressed us and Draupadi, who was clad in a single garment, with "Cow, cow!" - therefore, today, you shall reap the consequence of that ridicule.
एवमुक्त्वा स वामेन पदा मौलिमुपास्पृशत् ।
शिरश्च राजसिंहस्य पादेन समलोडयत् ॥५॥
5. evamuktvā sa vāmena padā maulimupāspṛśat ,
śiraśca rājasiṁhasya pādena samaloḍayat.
5. evam uktvā saḥ vāmena padā maulim upāspṛśat
śiraḥ ca rājasiṃhasya pādena samaloḍayat

5. Having spoken thus, he touched the crown (of Duryodhana's head) with his left foot, and he trampled the head of that lion-like king with his (other) foot.
तथैव क्रोधसंरक्तो भीमः परबलार्दनः ।
पुनरेवाब्रवीद्वाक्यं यत्तच्छृणु नराधिप ॥६॥
6. tathaiva krodhasaṁrakto bhīmaḥ parabalārdanaḥ ,
punarevābravīdvākyaṁ yattacchṛṇu narādhipa.
6. tathā eva krodhasaṃraktaḥ bhīmaḥ parabalārdanaḥ
punar eva abravīt vākyam yat tat śṛṇu narādhipa
6. narādhipa,
krodhasaṃraktaḥ parabalārdanaḥ bhīmaḥ tathā eva punar eva vākyam abravīt,
yat tat śṛṇu
6. Just so, Bhima, red with rage and the tormentor of enemy forces, again spoke these words. O king, hear what he said.
येऽस्मान्पुरोऽपनृत्यन्त पुनर्गौरिति गौरिति ।
तान्वयं प्रतिनृत्यामः पुनर्गौरिति गौरिति ॥७॥
7. ye'smānpuro'panṛtyanta punargauriti gauriti ,
tānvayaṁ pratinṛtyāmaḥ punargauriti gauriti.
7. ye asmān puraḥ apanṛtyanta punar gauḥ iti gauḥ iti
tān vayam pratinṛtyāmaḥ punar gauḥ iti gauḥ iti
7. ye asmān puraḥ punar gauḥ iti gauḥ iti apanṛtyanta,
vayam tān punar gauḥ iti gauḥ iti pratinṛtyāmaḥ
7. We will mock them back by repeatedly shouting "cow! cow!", just as they previously mocked us by dancing and repeatedly shouting "cow! cow!".
नास्माकं निकृतिर्वह्निर्नाक्षद्यूतं न वञ्चना ।
स्वबाहुबलमाश्रित्य प्रबाधामो वयं रिपून् ॥८॥
8. nāsmākaṁ nikṛtirvahnirnākṣadyūtaṁ na vañcanā ,
svabāhubalamāśritya prabādhāmo vayaṁ ripūn.
8. na asmākam nikṛtiḥ vahniḥ na akṣadyūtam na vañcanā
svabāhubalam āśritya prabādhāmaḥ vayam ripūn
8. asmākam nikṛtiḥ vahniḥ na,
akṣadyūtam na,
vañcanā na.
vayam svabāhubalam āśritya ripūn prabādhāmaḥ
8. We do not employ deceit, arson, dice-play, or any other form of trickery. Instead, relying on the strength of our own arms, we overpower our enemies.
सोऽवाप्य वैरस्य परस्य पारं वृकोदरः प्राह शनैः प्रहस्य ।
युधिष्ठिरं केशवसृञ्जयांश्च धनंजयं माद्रवतीसुतौ च ॥९॥
9. so'vāpya vairasya parasya pāraṁ; vṛkodaraḥ prāha śanaiḥ prahasya ,
yudhiṣṭhiraṁ keśavasṛñjayāṁśca; dhanaṁjayaṁ mādravatīsutau ca.
9. saḥ avāpya vairasya parasya pāram
vṛkodaraḥ prāha śanaiḥ prahasya
yudhiṣṭhiram keśavasṛñjayān
ca dhanañjayam mādravatīsutau ca
9. saḥ vṛkodaraḥ vairasya parasya pāram avāpya,
śanaiḥ prahasya yudhiṣṭhiram,
keśavasṛñjayān ca,
dhanañjayam,
mādravatīsutau ca prāha
9. Having finally brought the feud with the other party to an end, Bhima (Vṛkodara) laughed softly and spoke to Yudhishthira, Krishna and the Srinjayas, Dhananjaya (Arjuna), and the two sons of Madri (Nakula and Sahadeva).
रजस्वलां द्रौपदीमानयन्ये ये चाप्यकुर्वन्त सदस्यवस्त्राम् ।
तान्पश्यध्वं पाण्डवैर्धार्तराष्ट्रान्रणे हतांस्तपसा याज्ञसेन्याः ॥१०॥
10. rajasvalāṁ draupadīmānayanye; ye cāpyakurvanta sadasyavastrām ,
tānpaśyadhvaṁ pāṇḍavairdhārtarāṣṭrā;nraṇe hatāṁstapasā yājñasenyāḥ.
10. rajasvalām draupadīm ānayan ye ye
ca api akurvanta sadasi avastrām
tān paśyadhvam pāṇḍavaiḥ dhārtarāṣṭrān
raṇe hatān tapasā yājñasenyāḥ
10. paśyadhvam tān dhārtarāṣṭrān ye
rajasvalām draupadīm ānayan ye ca
api sadasi avastrām akurvanta hatān
raṇe pāṇḍavaiḥ yājñasenyāḥ tapasā
10. Behold those sons of Dhritarashtra who dragged the menstruating Draupadi and disrobed her in the assembly; see them now killed in battle by the Pandavas, by virtue of Yājñasenī's ascetic power (tapas).
ये नः पुरा षण्ढतिलानवोचन्क्रूरा राज्ञो धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्राः ।
ते नो हताः सगणाः सानुबन्धाः कामं स्वर्गं नरकं वा व्रजामः ॥११॥
11. ye naḥ purā ṣaṇḍhatilānavoca;nkrūrā rājño dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putrāḥ ,
te no hatāḥ sagaṇāḥ sānubandhāḥ; kāmaṁ svargaṁ narakaṁ vā vrajāmaḥ.
11. ye naḥ purā ṣaṇḍhatilān avocan
krūrāḥ rājñaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putrāḥ
te naḥ hatāḥ sagaṇāḥ sānubandhāḥ
kāmam svargam narakam vā vrajāmaḥ
11. purā ye krūrāḥ rājñaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya
putrāḥ naḥ ṣaṇḍhatilān avocan
te sagaṇāḥ sānubandhāḥ naḥ hatāḥ
kāmam svargam vā narakam vrajāmaḥ
11. Those cruel sons of King Dhritarashtra who formerly called us 'eunuch-sesames' (implying barrenness or impotence) – they have now been killed by us, along with their retinues and dependents. Now, let us go to heaven or to hell, as we wish.
पुनश्च राज्ञः पतितस्य भूमौ स तां गदां स्कन्धगतां निरीक्ष्य ।
वामेन पादेन शिरः प्रमृद्य दुर्योधनं नैकृतिकेत्यवोचत् ॥१२॥
12. punaśca rājñaḥ patitasya bhūmau; sa tāṁ gadāṁ skandhagatāṁ nirīkṣya ,
vāmena pādena śiraḥ pramṛdya; duryodhanaṁ naikṛtiketyavocat.
12. punaḥ ca rājñaḥ patitasya bhūmau
sa tām gadām skandhagatām nirīkṣya
vāmena pādena śiraḥ pramṛdya
duryodhanam naikṛtika iti avocan
12. punaḥ ca saḥ rājñaḥ bhūmau patitasya
tām skandhagatām gadām nirīkṣya
vāmena pādena śiraḥ pramṛdya
duryodhanam naikṛtika iti avocan
12. And again, when that king had fallen to the ground, he, observing the mace lying on Duryodhana's shoulder, pressed his head with his left foot and addressed Duryodhana, saying, 'O deceitful one!'
हृष्टेन राजन्कुरुपार्थिवस्य क्षुद्रात्मना भीमसेनेन पादम् ।
दृष्ट्वा कृतं मूर्धनि नाभ्यनन्दन्धर्मात्मानः सोमकानां प्रबर्हाः ॥१३॥
13. hṛṣṭena rājankurupārthivasya; kṣudrātmanā bhīmasenena pādam ,
dṛṣṭvā kṛtaṁ mūrdhani nābhyananda;ndharmātmānaḥ somakānāṁ prabarhāḥ.
13. hṛṣṭena rājan kurupārthivasya
kṣudrātmanā bhīmasenena pādam dṛṣṭvā
kṛtam mūrdhani na abhyanandan
dharmātmanaḥ somakānām prabarhāḥ
13. rājan hṛṣṭena kṣudrātmanā bhīmasenena
kurupārthivasya mūrdhani
pādam kṛtam dṛṣṭvā somakānām
dharmātmanaḥ prabarhāḥ na abhyanandan
13. O King, seeing the act of Bhimasena, who was overjoyed and ignoble, placing his foot on the head of the Kuru ruler, the virtuous leaders (dharma-ātman) among the Somakas did not approve.
तव पुत्रं तथा हत्वा कत्थमानं वृकोदरम् ।
नृत्यमानं च बहुशो धर्मराजोऽब्रवीदिदम् ॥१४॥
14. tava putraṁ tathā hatvā katthamānaṁ vṛkodaram ,
nṛtyamānaṁ ca bahuśo dharmarājo'bravīdidam.
14. tava putram tathā hatvā katthāmanam vṛkodaram
nṛtyamānam ca bahuśaḥ dharmarājaḥ abravīt idam
14. tava putram tathā hatvā,
katthāmanam ca bahuśaḥ nṛtyamānam vṛkodaram dharmarājaḥ idam abravīt
14. Having thus killed your son, and repeatedly boasting and dancing, Bhimasena was addressed by Yudhishthira (dharmarāja) with these words.
मा शिरोऽस्य पदा मर्दीर्मा धर्मस्तेऽत्यगान्महान् ।
राजा ज्ञातिर्हतश्चायं नैतन्न्याय्यं तवानघ ॥१५॥
15. mā śiro'sya padā mardīrmā dharmaste'tyagānmahān ,
rājā jñātirhataścāyaṁ naitannyāyyaṁ tavānagha.
15. mā śiraḥ asya padā mardīḥ mā dharmaḥ te atyagāt mahān
rājā jñātiḥ hataḥ ca ayam na etat nyāyyam tava anagha
15. anagha,
asya śiraḥ padā mā mardīḥ.
te mahān dharmaḥ mā atyagāt.
ayam rājā jñātiḥ ca hataḥ.
etat tava na nyāyyam.
15. Do not crush his head with your foot. Let not your great virtue (dharma) depart from you. This king, your kinsman, is slain. This is not proper for you, O sinless one.
विध्वस्तोऽयं हतामात्यो हतभ्राता हतप्रजः ।
उत्सन्नपिण्डो भ्राता च नैतन्न्याय्यं कृतं त्वया ॥१६॥
16. vidhvasto'yaṁ hatāmātyo hatabhrātā hataprajaḥ ,
utsannapiṇḍo bhrātā ca naitannyāyyaṁ kṛtaṁ tvayā.
16. vidhvastaḥ ayam hata-āmātyaḥ hata-bhrātā hata-prajaḥ
utsanna-piṇḍaḥ bhrātā ca na etat nyāyyam kṛtam tvayā
16. ayam hata-āmātyaḥ,
hata-bhrātā,
hata-prajaḥ,
utsanna-piṇḍaḥ ca vidhvastaḥ bhrātā.
etat tvayā kṛtam na nyāyyam.
16. This brother, whose ministers are slain, whose brothers are slain, whose subjects are slain, and for whom funeral cakes (piṇḍa) can no longer be offered, is utterly destroyed. This act done by you is not proper.
धार्मिको भीमसेनोऽसावित्याहुस्त्वां पुरा जनाः ।
स कस्माद्भीमसेन त्वं राजानमधितिष्ठसि ॥१७॥
17. dhārmiko bhīmaseno'sāvityāhustvāṁ purā janāḥ ,
sa kasmādbhīmasena tvaṁ rājānamadhitiṣṭhasi.
17. dhārmikaḥ bhīmasenaḥ asau iti āhuḥ tvām purā janāḥ
sa kasmāt bhīmasena tvam rājānam adhitiṣṭhasi
17. purā janāḥ tvām asau bhīmasenaḥ dhārmikaḥ iti āhuḥ.
sa bhīmasena,
tvam kasmāt rājānam adhitiṣṭhasi?
17. In the past, people used to say of you, 'This Bhimasena is righteous (dhārmika).' Why then, O Bhimasena, do you stand over the king?
दृष्ट्वा दुर्योधनं राजा कुन्तीपुत्रस्तथागतम् ।
नेत्राभ्यामश्रुपूर्णाभ्यामिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१८॥
18. dṛṣṭvā duryodhanaṁ rājā kuntīputrastathāgatam ,
netrābhyāmaśrupūrṇābhyāmidaṁ vacanamabravīt.
18. dṛṣṭvā duryodhanaṃ rājā kuntīputraḥ tathāgatam
netrābhyām aśrupūrṇābhyām idaṃ vacanam abravīt
18. rājā kuntīputraḥ netrābhyām aśrupūrṇābhyām
tathāgatam duryodhanaṃ dṛṣṭvā idaṃ vacanam abravīt
18. King Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kunti, seeing Duryodhana in that state, spoke these words with his eyes filled with tears.
नूनमेतद्बलवता धात्रादिष्टं महात्मना ।
यद्वयं त्वां जिघांसामस्त्वं चास्मान्कुरुसत्तम ॥१९॥
19. nūnametadbalavatā dhātrādiṣṭaṁ mahātmanā ,
yadvayaṁ tvāṁ jighāṁsāmastvaṁ cāsmānkurusattama.
19. nūnam etat balavatā dhātrā ādiṣṭam mahātmanā yat
vayam tvām jighāṃsāmaḥ tvam ca asmān kurusattama
19. he kurusattama nūnam etat balavatā mahātmanā dhātrā ādiṣṭam
yat vayam tvām jighāṃsāmaḥ ca tvam asmān (jighāṃsasi)
19. O best of Kurus, it is certainly ordained by the powerful and great-souled creator (dhātṛ) that we desire to kill you, and you desire to kill us.
आत्मनो ह्यपराधेन महद्व्यसनमीदृशम् ।
प्राप्तवानसि यल्लोभान्मदाद्बाल्याच्च भारत ॥२०॥
20. ātmano hyaparādhena mahadvyasanamīdṛśam ,
prāptavānasi yallobhānmadādbālyācca bhārata.
20. ātmanaḥ hi aparādhena mahat vyasanam īdṛśam
prāptavān asi yat lobhāt madāt bālyāt ca bhārata
20. he bhārata hi ātmanaḥ aparādhena lobhāt madāt
bālyāt ca yat īdṛśam mahat vyasanam prāptavān asi
20. Indeed, O Bhārata, you have incurred such a great misfortune because of your own offense (aparādha), stemming from greed, arrogance, and foolishness.
घातयित्वा वयस्यांश्च भ्रातॄनथ पितॄंस्तथा ।
पुत्रान्पौत्रांस्तथाचार्यांस्ततोऽसि निधनं गतः ॥२१॥
21. ghātayitvā vayasyāṁśca bhrātṝnatha pitṝṁstathā ,
putrānpautrāṁstathācāryāṁstato'si nidhanaṁ gataḥ.
21. ghātayitvā vayasyān ca bhrātṝn atha pitṝn tathā
putrān pautrān tathā ācāryān tataḥ asi nidhanam gataḥ
21. vayasyān ca bhrātṝn atha pitṝn tathā putrān pautrān
tathā ācāryān ghātayitvā tataḥ nidhanam gataḥ asi
21. Having caused to be killed your friends, brothers, elders, sons, grandsons, and teachers, you have therefore met your death.
तवापराधादस्माभिर्भ्रातरस्ते महारथाः ।
निहता ज्ञातयश्चान्ये दिष्टं मन्ये दुरत्ययम् ॥२२॥
22. tavāparādhādasmābhirbhrātaraste mahārathāḥ ,
nihatā jñātayaścānye diṣṭaṁ manye duratyayam.
22. tava aparādhāt asmābhiḥ bhrātaraḥ te mahārathāḥ
nihatāḥ jñātayaḥ ca anye diṣṭam manye duratyayam
22. tava aparādhāt asmābhiḥ te mahārathāḥ bhrātaraḥ
anye jñātayaḥ ca nihatāḥ diṣṭam duratyayam manye
22. Due to your offense, your great charioteer brothers and other relatives have been killed by us. I believe this fate to be insurmountable.
स्नुषाश्च प्रस्नुषाश्चैव धृतराष्ट्रस्य विह्वलाः ।
गर्हयिष्यन्ति नो नूनं विधवाः शोककर्शिताः ॥२३॥
23. snuṣāśca prasnuṣāścaiva dhṛtarāṣṭrasya vihvalāḥ ,
garhayiṣyanti no nūnaṁ vidhavāḥ śokakarśitāḥ.
23. snuṣāḥ ca prasnuṣāḥ ca eva dhṛtarāṣṭrasya vihvalāḥ
garhayiṣyanti naḥ nūnam vidhavāḥ śokakarśitāḥ
23. dhṛtarāṣṭrasya snuṣāḥ ca prasnuṣāḥ ca eva vihvalāḥ
vidhavāḥ śokakarśitāḥ nūnam naḥ garhayiṣyanti
23. The distressed daughters-in-law and granddaughters-in-law of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, now widows and emaciated by grief, will certainly censure us.
एवमुक्त्वा सुदुःखार्तो निशश्वास स पार्थिवः ।
विललाप चिरं चापि धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ॥२४॥
24. evamuktvā suduḥkhārto niśaśvāsa sa pārthivaḥ ,
vilalāpa ciraṁ cāpi dharmaputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
24. evam uktvā suduḥkhārtaḥ niśaśvāsa saḥ pārthivaḥ
vilalāpa ciram ca api dharmaputraḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
24. saḥ pārthivaḥ dharmaputraḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ suduḥkhārtaḥ
evam uktvā niśaśvāsa ca ciram api vilalāpa
24. Having spoken thus, that king, Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Dharma (constitutional law), greatly afflicted by sorrow, sighed and also lamented for a long time.
