बृहदश्व उवाच ।
सा तच्छ्रुत्वानवद्याङ्गी सार्थवाहवचस्तदा ।
अगच्छत्तेन वै सार्धं भर्तृदर्शनलालसा ॥१॥
1. bṛhadaśva uvāca ,
sā tacchrutvānavadyāṅgī sārthavāhavacastadā ,
agacchattena vai sārdhaṁ bhartṛdarśanalālasā.

1. Bṛhadaśva said: Hearing that, she, whose body was faultless, then went with him, eagerly desirous of seeing her husband.
अथ काले बहुतिथे वने महति दारुणे ।
तडागं सर्वतोभद्रं पद्मसौगन्धिकं महत् ॥२॥
2. atha kāle bahutithe vane mahati dāruṇe ,
taḍāgaṁ sarvatobhadraṁ padmasaugandhikaṁ mahat.

2. Then, after a long period, in a vast and dreadful forest, there was a large, entirely auspicious pond, fragrant with lotuses.
ददृशुर्वणिजो रम्यं प्रभूतयवसेन्धनम् ।
बहुमूलफलोपेतं नानापक्षिगणैर्वृतम् ॥३॥
3. dadṛśurvaṇijo ramyaṁ prabhūtayavasendhanam ,
bahumūlaphalopetaṁ nānāpakṣigaṇairvṛtam.

3. The merchants saw the beautiful pond, which had abundant grass and firewood, was rich with many roots and fruits, and was surrounded by flocks of various birds.
तं दृष्ट्वा मृष्टसलिलं मनोहरसुखावहम् ।
सुपरिश्रान्तवाहास्ते निवेशाय मनो दधुः ॥४॥
4. taṁ dṛṣṭvā mṛṣṭasalilaṁ manoharasukhāvaham ,
supariśrāntavāhāste niveśāya mano dadhuḥ.
4. tam dṛṣṭvā mṛṣṭasalilam manoharasukhāvaham
| supariśrāntavāhāḥ te niveśāya manaḥ dadhuḥ
4. Seeing that clear-watered, charming, and comfort-providing place, those whose conveyances were extremely weary decided to set up camp there.
संमते सार्थवाहस्य विविशुर्वनमुत्तमम् ।
उवास सार्थः सुमहान्वेलामासाद्य पश्चिमाम् ॥५॥
5. saṁmate sārthavāhasya viviśurvanamuttamam ,
uvāsa sārthaḥ sumahānvelāmāsādya paścimām.

5. With the caravan leader's consent, they entered an excellent forest. The very large caravan settled down after reaching the western bank.
अथार्धरात्रसमये निःशब्दस्तिमिते तदा ।
सुप्ते सार्थे परिश्रान्ते हस्तियूथमुपागमत् ।
पानीयार्थं गिरिनदीं मदप्रस्रवणाविलाम् ॥६॥
6. athārdharātrasamaye niḥśabdastimite tadā ,
supte sārthe pariśrānte hastiyūthamupāgamat ,
pānīyārthaṁ girinadīṁ madaprasravaṇāvilām.

6. Then, at midnight, when everything was silent and still, and the exhausted caravan was asleep, a herd of elephants approached the mountain river for water, making it muddy and agitated with the flow of their rut.
मार्गं संरुध्य संसुप्तं पद्मिन्याः सार्थमुत्तमम् ।
सुप्तं ममर्द सहसा चेष्टमानं महीतले ॥७॥
7. mārgaṁ saṁrudhya saṁsuptaṁ padminyāḥ sārthamuttamam ,
suptaṁ mamarda sahasā ceṣṭamānaṁ mahītale.

7. Blocking the path, the elephant herd suddenly crushed the excellent caravan, which was deeply asleep and struggling on the ground, and which had settled near the lotus-covered area.
हाहारवं प्रमुञ्चन्तः सार्थिकाः शरणार्थिनः ।
वनगुल्मांश्च धावन्तो निद्रान्धा महतो भयात् ।
केचिद्दन्तैः करैः केचित्केचित्पद्भ्यां हता नराः ॥८॥
8. hāhāravaṁ pramuñcantaḥ sārthikāḥ śaraṇārthinaḥ ,
vanagulmāṁśca dhāvanto nidrāndhā mahato bhayāt ,
keciddantaiḥ karaiḥ kecitkecitpadbhyāṁ hatā narāḥ.
8. hāhāravam pramuñcantaḥ sārthikāḥ
śaraṇārthinaḥ vana-gulmān ca dhāvantaḥ
nidrā-andhāḥ mahataḥ bhayāt kecit dantaiḥ
karaiḥ kecit kecit padbhyām hatāḥ narāḥ
8. Blinded by sleep and overwhelmed by great fear, the travelers cried out in distress and sought refuge, running towards the forest thickets. Some men were struck down by teeth, some by hands, and some by feet.
गोखरोष्ट्राश्वबहुलं पदातिजनसंकुलम् ।
भयार्तं धावमानं तत्परस्परहतं तदा ॥९॥
9. gokharoṣṭrāśvabahulaṁ padātijanasaṁkulam ,
bhayārtaṁ dhāvamānaṁ tatparasparahataṁ tadā.
9. go-khara-uṣṭra-aśva-bahulam padāti-jana-saṅkulam
bhaya-ārtam dhāvamānam tat paraspara-hatam tadā
9. Then that multitude, rich with cows, donkeys, camels, and horses, and crowded with pedestrians, was running in distress from fear and striking one another down.
घोरान्नादान्विमुञ्चन्तो निपेतुर्धरणीतले ।
वृक्षेष्वासज्य संभग्नाः पतिता विषमेषु च ।
तथा तन्निहतं सर्वं समृद्धं सार्थमण्डलम् ॥१०॥
10. ghorānnādānvimuñcanto nipeturdharaṇītale ,
vṛkṣeṣvāsajya saṁbhagnāḥ patitā viṣameṣu ca ,
tathā tannihataṁ sarvaṁ samṛddhaṁ sārthamaṇḍalam.
10. ghorān nādān vimuñcantaḥ nipetuḥ
dharaṇī-tale vṛkṣeṣu āsajya saṃbhagnāḥ
patitāḥ viṣameṣu ca tathā tat
nihitam sarvam samṛddham sārtha-maṇḍalam
10. Emitting terrible cries, they fell to the ground. Some were broken, having become entangled in trees, while others fell into uneven places. Thus, that entire prosperous caravan was destroyed.
अथापरेद्युः संप्राप्ते हतशिष्टा जनास्तदा ।
वनगुल्माद्विनिष्क्रम्य शोचन्तो वैशसं कृतम् ।
भ्रातरं पितरं पुत्रं सखायं च जनाधिप ॥११॥
11. athāparedyuḥ saṁprāpte hataśiṣṭā janāstadā ,
vanagulmādviniṣkramya śocanto vaiśasaṁ kṛtam ,
bhrātaraṁ pitaraṁ putraṁ sakhāyaṁ ca janādhipa.
11. atha aparedyuḥ saṃprāpte hata-śiṣṭāḥ
janāḥ tadā vana-gulmāt viniṣkramya
śocantaḥ vaiśasam kṛtam bhrātaram
pitaram putram sakhāyam ca janādhipa
11. Then, when the next day arrived, the people who survived the slaughter emerged from the forest thickets. O ruler of men, they were lamenting the disaster that had occurred, searching for their brother, father, son, and friend.
अशोचत्तत्र वैदर्भी किं नु मे दुष्कृतं कृतम् ।
योऽपि मे निर्जनेऽरण्ये संप्राप्तोऽयं जनार्णवः ।
हतोऽयं हस्तियूथेन मन्दभाग्यान्ममैव तु ॥१२॥
12. aśocattatra vaidarbhī kiṁ nu me duṣkṛtaṁ kṛtam ,
yo'pi me nirjane'raṇye saṁprāpto'yaṁ janārṇavaḥ ,
hato'yaṁ hastiyūthena mandabhāgyānmamaiva tu.
12. aśocat tatra vaidarbhī kim nu me duṣkṛtam
kṛtam yaḥ api me nirjane araṇye
saṃprāptaḥ ayam janārṇavaḥ hataḥ ayam
hastiyūthena mandabhāgyāt mama eva tu
12. Vaidarbhī lamented there, saying, "What wrong deed have I committed? This Janārṇava, who had reached me in this secluded forest, has been killed by a herd of elephants, truly because of my own misfortune."
प्राप्तव्यं सुचिरं दुःखं मया नूनमसंशयम् ।
नाप्राप्तकालो म्रियते श्रुतं वृद्धानुशासनम् ॥१३॥
13. prāptavyaṁ suciraṁ duḥkhaṁ mayā nūnamasaṁśayam ,
nāprāptakālo mriyate śrutaṁ vṛddhānuśāsanam.
13. prāptavyam suciram duḥkham mayā nūnam asaṃśayam
na aprāptakālaḥ mriyate śrutam vṛddhānuśāsanam
13. Undoubtedly, I must endure prolonged suffering. One whose time has not yet come does not die; this teaching of the elders has been heard.
यन्नाहमद्य मृदिता हस्तियूथेन दुःखिता ।
न ह्यदैवकृतं किंचिन्नराणामिह विद्यते ॥१४॥
14. yannāhamadya mṛditā hastiyūthena duḥkhitā ,
na hyadaivakṛtaṁ kiṁcinnarāṇāmiha vidyate.
14. yat na aham adya mṛditā hastiyūthena duḥkhitā
na hi adaivakṛtam kiñcit narāṇām iha vidyate
14. The fact that I, though sorrowful, was not crushed today by the herd of elephants [shows that] nothing that is not divinely ordained exists here for human beings.
न च मे बालभावेऽपि किंचिद्व्यपकृतं कृतम् ।
कर्मणा मनसा वाचा यदिदं दुःखमागतम् ॥१५॥
15. na ca me bālabhāve'pi kiṁcidvyapakṛtaṁ kṛtam ,
karmaṇā manasā vācā yadidaṁ duḥkhamāgatam.
15. na ca me bālabhāve api kiñcit vyapakṛtam kṛtam
karmaṇā manasā vācā yat idam duḥkham āgatam
15. Nor was any wrong done by me, even in my childhood, by action (karma), thought, or word, for this sorrow to have befallen me.
मन्ये स्वयंवरकृते लोकपालाः समागताः ।
प्रत्याख्याता मया तत्र नलस्यार्थाय देवताः ।
नूनं तेषां प्रभावेन वियोगं प्राप्तवत्यहम् ॥१६॥
16. manye svayaṁvarakṛte lokapālāḥ samāgatāḥ ,
pratyākhyātā mayā tatra nalasyārthāya devatāḥ ,
nūnaṁ teṣāṁ prabhāvena viyogaṁ prāptavatyaham.
16. manye svayaṃvarakṛte lokapālāḥ
samāgatāḥ pratyākhyātā mayā tatra
nalasya arthāya devatāḥ nūnaṃ teṣāṃ
prabhāveṇa viyogaṃ prāptavatī aham
16. I thought the guardians of the worlds (lokapālās) had come for the svayaṃvara, but I rejected those deities there for Nala's sake. Surely, it is by their power (prabhāva) that I have now experienced separation (viyoga).
एवमादीनि दुःखानि सा विलप्य वराङ्गना ।
हतशिष्टैः सह तदा ब्राह्मणैर्वेदपारगैः ।
अगच्छद्राजशार्दूल दुःखशोकपरायणा ॥१७॥
17. evamādīni duḥkhāni sā vilapya varāṅganā ,
hataśiṣṭaiḥ saha tadā brāhmaṇairvedapāragaiḥ ,
agacchadrājaśārdūla duḥkhaśokaparāyaṇā.

varāṅganā hataśiṣṭaiḥ saha tadā
brāhmaṇaiḥ vedapāragaiḥ agacchat
rājaśārdūla duḥkhaśokaparāyaṇā
17. O tiger among kings (rājaśārdūla), having lamented such sorrows, that beautiful woman (varāṅganā) then departed, deeply absorbed in sorrow and grief, accompanied by the surviving brahmins who were masters of the Vedas.
गच्छन्ती सा चिरात्कालात्पुरमासादयन्महत् ।
सायाह्ने चेदिराजस्य सुबाहोः सत्यवादिनः ।
वस्त्रार्धकर्तसंवीता प्रविवेश पुरोत्तमम् ॥१८॥
18. gacchantī sā cirātkālātpuramāsādayanmahat ,
sāyāhne cedirājasya subāhoḥ satyavādinaḥ ,
vastrārdhakartasaṁvītā praviveśa purottamam.
18. gacchantī sā cirāt kālāt puraṃ
āsādayat mahat sāyāhne cedirājasya
subāhoḥ satyavādinaḥ
vastrārthakartasaṃvītā praviveśa purottamam
18. As she traveled for a long time, she reached a great city. In the evening, clad in half a torn garment, she entered that excellent city belonging to Subāhu, the truthful king of Cedi.
तां विवर्णां कृशां दीनां मुक्तकेशीममार्जनाम् ।
उन्मत्तामिव गच्छन्तीं ददृशुः पुरवासिनः ॥१९॥
19. tāṁ vivarṇāṁ kṛśāṁ dīnāṁ muktakeśīmamārjanām ,
unmattāmiva gacchantīṁ dadṛśuḥ puravāsinaḥ.
19. tāṃ vivarṇāṃ kṛśāṃ dīnāṃ muktakeśīm amarjanām
unmattām iva gacchantīṃ dadṛśuḥ puravāsinaḥ
19. The city dwellers saw her walking like a madwoman, discolored, emaciated, pitiable, with unbound hair, and unadorned.
प्रविशन्तीं तु तां दृष्ट्वा चेदिराजपुरीं तदा ।
अनुजग्मुस्ततो बाला ग्रामिपुत्राः कुतूहलात् ॥२०॥
20. praviśantīṁ tu tāṁ dṛṣṭvā cedirājapurīṁ tadā ,
anujagmustato bālā grāmiputrāḥ kutūhalāt.
20. praviśantīm tu tām dṛṣṭvā cedirājapurīm tadā
anujagmuḥ tataḥ bālāḥ grāmiputrāḥ kutūhalāt
20. When the village children saw her entering the capital city of the Cedi king, they followed her out of curiosity.
सा तैः परिवृतागच्छत्समीपं राजवेश्मनः ।
तां प्रासादगतापश्यद्राजमाता जनैर्वृताम् ॥२१॥
21. sā taiḥ parivṛtāgacchatsamīpaṁ rājaveśmanaḥ ,
tāṁ prāsādagatāpaśyadrājamātā janairvṛtām.
21. sā taiḥ parivṛtā āgacchat samīpam rājavéśmanaḥ
tām prāsādagatā apaśyat rājamātā janaiḥ vṛtām
21. She arrived near the royal palace, surrounded by those children. The Queen Mother, who was in the palace, saw her surrounded by people.
सा जनं वारयित्वा तं प्रासादतलमुत्तमम् ।
आरोप्य विस्मिता राजन्दमयन्तीमपृच्छत ॥२२॥
22. sā janaṁ vārayitvā taṁ prāsādatalamuttamam ,
āropya vismitā rājandamayantīmapṛcchata.
22. sā janam vārayitvā tam prāsādatalam uttamam
āropya vismitā rājan damayantīm apṛcchat
22. Having made the people stop, she (the Queen Mother), amazed, brought her (Damayantī) up to that excellent palace terrace, and then asked Damayantī, "O King (Janamejaya, by the narrator)."
एवमप्यसुखाविष्टा बिभर्षि परमं वपुः ।
भासि विद्युदिवाभ्रेषु शंस मे कासि कस्य वा ॥२३॥
23. evamapyasukhāviṣṭā bibharṣi paramaṁ vapuḥ ,
bhāsi vidyudivābhreṣu śaṁsa me kāsi kasya vā.
23. evam api asukhāviṣṭā bibharṣi paramam vapuḥ
bhāsi vidyut iva abhresu śaṃsa me kā asi kasya vā
23. Even though you are thus overcome by sorrow, you possess a most beautiful form. You shine like lightning among the clouds. Tell me, who are you and whose are you?
न हि ते मानुषं रूपं भूषणैरपि वर्जितम् ।
असहाया नरेभ्यश्च नोद्विजस्यमरप्रभे ॥२४॥
24. na hi te mānuṣaṁ rūpaṁ bhūṣaṇairapi varjitam ,
asahāyā narebhyaśca nodvijasyamaraprabhe.
24. na hi te mānuṣam rūpam bhūṣaṇaiḥ api varjitam
| asahāyā narebhyaḥ ca na udvijasi amaraprabhe
24. Indeed, your human form is not devoid of ornaments. You are not helpless among men, nor do you tremble, O one with immortal radiance (amaraprabhā).
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्या भैमी वचनमब्रवीत् ।
मानुषीं मां विजानीहि भर्तारं समनुव्रताम् ॥२५॥
25. tacchrutvā vacanaṁ tasyā bhaimī vacanamabravīt ,
mānuṣīṁ māṁ vijānīhi bhartāraṁ samanuvratām.
25. tat śrutvā vacanam tasyā bhaimī vacanam abravīt
| mānuṣīm mām vijānīhi bhartāram samanuvratām
25. Having heard her words, Damayantī (Bhaimī) spoke: 'Understand that I am a human woman, devoted to my husband.'
सैरन्ध्रीं जातिसंपन्नां भुजिष्यां कामवासिनीम् ।
फलमूलाशनामेकां यत्रसायंप्रतिश्रयाम् ॥२६॥
26. sairandhrīṁ jātisaṁpannāṁ bhujiṣyāṁ kāmavāsinīm ,
phalamūlāśanāmekāṁ yatrasāyaṁpratiśrayām.
26. sairandhrīm jātisampannām bhujiṣyām kāmavāsinīm
| phalamūlāśanām ekām yatrasāyaṃpratiśrayām
26. Know me as a noble-born female attendant, a free servant (bhujiṣyā) who resides where she wishes, subsisting solely on fruits and roots, alone, and seeking shelter wherever night falls.
असंख्येयगुणो भर्ता मां च नित्यमनुव्रतः ।
भर्तारमपि तं वीरं छायेवानपगा सदा ॥२७॥
27. asaṁkhyeyaguṇo bhartā māṁ ca nityamanuvrataḥ ,
bhartāramapi taṁ vīraṁ chāyevānapagā sadā.
27. asaṃkhyeyaguṇaḥ bhartā mām ca nityam anuvrataḥ
| bhartāram api tam vīram chāyā iva anapagā sadā
27. My husband possesses innumerable excellent qualities and is constantly devoted to me. Similarly, I am always inseparable from that heroic husband, just like a shadow.
तस्य दैवात्प्रसङ्गोऽभूदतिमात्रं स्म देवने ।
द्यूते स निर्जितश्चैव वनमेकोऽभ्युपेयिवान् ॥२८॥
28. tasya daivātprasaṅgo'bhūdatimātraṁ sma devane ,
dyūte sa nirjitaścaiva vanameko'bhyupeyivān.
28. tasya daivāt prasaṅgaḥ abhūt atimātram sma devane
dyūte saḥ nirjitaḥ ca eva vanam ekaḥ abhyupeyivān
28. By destiny, he became excessively addicted to gambling. Having been utterly defeated in the game, he went alone to the forest.
तमेकवसनं वीरमुन्मत्तमिव विह्वलम् ।
आश्वासयन्ती भर्तारमहमन्वगमं वनम् ॥२९॥
29. tamekavasanaṁ vīramunmattamiva vihvalam ,
āśvāsayantī bhartāramahamanvagamaṁ vanam.
29. tam ekavasanam vīram unmattam iva vihvalam
āśvāsayantī bhartāram aham anvagamam vanam
29. Comforting my husband, who was dressed in a single garment and agitated as if mad, I followed him to the forest.
स कदाचिद्वने वीरः कस्मिंश्चित्कारणान्तरे ।
क्षुत्परीतः सुविमनास्तदप्येकं व्यसर्जयत् ॥३०॥
30. sa kadācidvane vīraḥ kasmiṁścitkāraṇāntare ,
kṣutparītaḥ suvimanāstadapyekaṁ vyasarjayat.
30. saḥ kadācit vane vīraḥ kasmin cit kāraṇāntare
kṣutparītaḥ suvimanāḥ tat api ekam vyasarjayat
30. One time, while in the forest, that hero, for some other reason, was afflicted by hunger and became greatly distressed in mind. He even cast off his one remaining garment.
तमेकवसनं नग्नमुन्मत्तं गतचेतसम् ।
अनुव्रजन्ती बहुला न स्वपामि निशाः सदा ॥३१॥
31. tamekavasanaṁ nagnamunmattaṁ gatacetasam ,
anuvrajantī bahulā na svapāmi niśāḥ sadā.
31. tam ekavasanam nagnam unmattam gatacetasam
anuvrajantī bahulāḥ na svapāmi niśāḥ sadā
31. Following him - who was then only in a single garment, and now naked, frenzied, and unconscious - I never slept, night after night.
ततो बहुतिथे काले सुप्तामुत्सृज्य मां क्वचित् ।
वाससोऽर्धं परिच्छिद्य त्यक्तवान्मामनागसम् ॥३२॥
32. tato bahutithe kāle suptāmutsṛjya māṁ kvacit ,
vāsaso'rdhaṁ paricchidya tyaktavānmāmanāgasam.
32. tataḥ bahutithe kāle suptām utsṛjya mām kvacit
vāsasaḥ ardham paricchidya tyaktavān mām anāgasam
32. Then, after a considerable time, he abandoned me, an innocent person, leaving me asleep somewhere after tearing off half of my garment.
तं मार्गमाणा भर्तारं दह्यमाना दिनक्षपाः ।
न विन्दाम्यमरप्रख्यं प्रियं प्राणधनेश्वरम् ॥३३॥
33. taṁ mārgamāṇā bhartāraṁ dahyamānā dinakṣapāḥ ,
na vindāmyamaraprakhyaṁ priyaṁ prāṇadhaneśvaram.
33. tam mārgamāṇā bhartāram dahyamānā dinakṣapāḥ na
vindāmi amaraprakhyam priyam prāṇadhaneśvaram
33. Searching for that husband, and consumed by grief through days and nights, I cannot find my dear, god-like (amaraprakhya) lord, the master of my life and wealth.
तामश्रुपरिपूर्णाक्षीं विलपन्तीं तथा बहु ।
राजमाताब्रवीदार्तां भैमीमार्ततरा स्वयम् ॥३४॥
34. tāmaśruparipūrṇākṣīṁ vilapantīṁ tathā bahu ,
rājamātābravīdārtāṁ bhaimīmārtatarā svayam.
34. tām aśruparipūrṇākṣīm vilapantīm tathā bahu
rājamātā abravīt ārtām bhaimīm ārtatarā svayam
34. The queen mother, herself more distressed, spoke to that sorrowful Bhīmī (Damayanti), whose eyes were brimming with tears and who was lamenting greatly.
वसस्व मयि कल्याणि प्रीतिर्मे त्वयि वर्तते ।
मृगयिष्यन्ति ते भद्रे भर्तारं पुरुषा मम ॥३५॥
35. vasasva mayi kalyāṇi prītirme tvayi vartate ,
mṛgayiṣyanti te bhadre bhartāraṁ puruṣā mama.
35. vasasva mayi kalyāṇi prītiḥ me tvayi vartate
mṛgayiṣyanti te bhadre bhartāram puruṣāḥ mama
35. O auspicious lady (kalyāṇi), stay with me; my affection is truly towards you. O noble lady (bhadre), my men will search for your husband.
अथ वा स्वयमागच्छेत्परिधावन्नितस्ततः ।
इहैव वसती भद्रे भर्तारमुपलप्स्यसे ॥३६॥
36. atha vā svayamāgacchetparidhāvannitastataḥ ,
ihaiva vasatī bhadre bhartāramupalapsyase.
36. atha vā svayam āgacchet paridhāvan itaḥ tataḥ
iha eva vasatī bhadre bhartāram upalapsyase
36. Or, he might come himself, running around here and there. O gracious lady, if you dwell right here, you will find your husband.
राजमातुर्वचः श्रुत्वा दमयन्ती वचोऽब्रवीत् ।
समयेनोत्सहे वस्तुं त्वयि वीरप्रजायिनि ॥३७॥
37. rājamāturvacaḥ śrutvā damayantī vaco'bravīt ,
samayenotsahe vastuṁ tvayi vīraprajāyini.
37. rājamātuḥ vacaḥ śrutvā damayantī vacaḥ abravīt
samayena utsahe vastum tvayi vīraprajāyini
37. Having heard the words of the king's mother, Damayantī spoke these words: 'I desire to stay with you, O mother of heroes, under certain conditions.'
उच्छिष्टं नैव भुञ्जीयां न कुर्यां पादधावनम् ।
न चाहं पुरुषानन्यान्संभाषेयं कथंचन ॥३८॥
38. ucchiṣṭaṁ naiva bhuñjīyāṁ na kuryāṁ pādadhāvanam ,
na cāhaṁ puruṣānanyānsaṁbhāṣeyaṁ kathaṁcana.
38. ucchiṣṭam na eva bhuñjīyām na kuryām pādadhāvanam
na ca aham puruṣān anyān saṃbhāṣeyam kathaṃcana
38. I will certainly not eat left-over food, nor will I wash feet. And I will certainly not speak with any other men at all.
प्रार्थयेद्यदि मां कश्चिद्दण्ड्यस्ते स पुमान्भवेत् ।
भर्तुरन्वेषणार्थं तु पश्येयं ब्राह्मणानहम् ॥३९॥
39. prārthayedyadi māṁ kaściddaṇḍyaste sa pumānbhavet ,
bharturanveṣaṇārthaṁ tu paśyeyaṁ brāhmaṇānaham.
39. prārthayet yadi mām kaścit daṇḍyaḥ te saḥ pumān bhavet
bhartuḥ anveṣaṇārtham tu paśyeyam brāhmaṇān aham
39. If anyone should solicit me, that man should be punished by you. However, for the purpose of searching for my husband, I would see Brahmins.
यद्येवमिह कर्तव्यं वसाम्यहमसंशयम् ।
अतोऽन्यथा न मे वासो वर्तते हृदये क्वचित् ॥४०॥
40. yadyevamiha kartavyaṁ vasāmyahamasaṁśayam ,
ato'nyathā na me vāso vartate hṛdaye kvacit.
40. yadi evam iha kartavyam vasāmi aham asaṃśayam |
ataḥ anyathā na me vāsaḥ vartate hṛdaye kvacit
40. If this is to be done here, I shall certainly reside here without doubt. Otherwise, my heart would have no inclination whatsoever to stay.
तां प्रहृष्टेन मनसा राजमातेदमब्रवीत् ।
सर्वमेतत्करिष्यामि दिष्ट्या ते व्रतमीदृशम् ॥४१॥
41. tāṁ prahṛṣṭena manasā rājamātedamabravīt ,
sarvametatkariṣyāmi diṣṭyā te vratamīdṛśam.
41. tām prahṛṣṭena manasā rājamātā idam abravīt |
sarvam etat kariṣyāmi diṣṭyā te vratam īdṛśam
41. With a joyful mind, the Queen Mother said this to her: 'I will do all this. Fortunately, your vow is of such a nature.'
एवमुक्त्वा ततो भैमीं राजमाता विशां पते ।
उवाचेदं दुहितरं सुनन्दां नाम भारत ॥४२॥
42. evamuktvā tato bhaimīṁ rājamātā viśāṁ pate ,
uvācedaṁ duhitaraṁ sunandāṁ nāma bhārata.
42. evam uktvā tataḥ bhaimīm rājamātā viśām pate
| uvāca idam duhitaram sunandām nāma bhārata
42. Having spoken thus to Bhaimī, O lord of people, the Queen Mother then said this to her daughter, named Sunandā, O Bhārata.
सैरन्ध्रीमभिजानीष्व सुनन्दे देवरूपिणीम् ।
एतया सह मोदस्व निरुद्विग्नमनाः स्वयम् ॥४३॥
43. sairandhrīmabhijānīṣva sunande devarūpiṇīm ,
etayā saha modasva nirudvignamanāḥ svayam.

| etayā saha modasva nirudvignamanāḥ svayam
43. O Sunandā, know this Sairandhrī, who possesses a divine form. Enjoy yourself with her, with an untroubled mind.
