शल्य उवाच ।
एवमुक्तः स भगवाञ्शच्या पुनरथाब्रवीत् ।
विक्रमस्य न कालोऽयं नहुषो बलवत्तरः ॥१॥
1. śalya uvāca ,
evamuktaḥ sa bhagavāñśacyā punarathābravīt ,
vikramasya na kālo'yaṁ nahuṣo balavattaraḥ.

abravīt vikramasya na kālaḥ ayam nahuṣaḥ balavattaraḥ
1. Śalya said: Addressed thus by Śacī, the revered (Bhagavān) then spoke again: 'This is not the opportune moment for heroic action (vikrama), as Nahuṣa is much stronger.'
विवर्धितश्च ऋषिभिर्हव्यैः कव्यैश्च भामिनि ।
नीतिमत्र विधास्यामि देवि तां कर्तुमर्हसि ॥२॥
2. vivardhitaśca ṛṣibhirhavyaiḥ kavyaiśca bhāmini ,
nītimatra vidhāsyāmi devi tāṁ kartumarhasi.
2. vivardhitaḥ ca ṛṣibhiḥ havyaiḥ kavyaiḥ ca bhāmini
nītim atra vidhāsyāmi devi tām kartum arhasi
2. And he has been strengthened by the sages with offerings for the devas (havya) and offerings for the ancestors (kavya), O fiery lady. I will devise a strategy here, O goddess; you ought to carry it out.
गुह्यं चैतत्त्वया कार्यं नाख्यातव्यं शुभे क्वचित् ।
गत्वा नहुषमेकान्ते ब्रवीहि तनुमध्यमे ॥३॥
3. guhyaṁ caitattvayā kāryaṁ nākhyātavyaṁ śubhe kvacit ,
gatvā nahuṣamekānte bravīhi tanumadhyame.
3. guhyam ca etat tvayā kāryam na ākhyātavyam śubhe
kvacit gatvā nahuṣam ekānte bravīhi tanumadhyame
3. This task is confidential and should be performed by you. O beautiful one, it must never be revealed anywhere. Go to Nahuṣa in private, O slender-waisted one, and tell him.
ऋषियानेन दिव्येन मामुपैहि जगत्पते ।
एवं तव वशे प्रीता भविष्यामीति तं वद ॥४॥
4. ṛṣiyānena divyena māmupaihi jagatpate ,
evaṁ tava vaśe prītā bhaviṣyāmīti taṁ vada.
4. ṛṣiyānena divyena mām upaihi jagatpate evam
tava vaśe prītā bhaviṣyāmi iti tam vada
4. O lord of the world, come to me by means of this divine vehicle of sages. Tell him, 'I shall thus be pleased and under your control (vaśa).'
इत्युक्ता देवराजेन पत्नी सा कमलेक्षणा ।
एवमस्त्वित्यथोक्त्वा तु जगाम नहुषं प्रति ॥५॥
5. ityuktā devarājena patnī sā kamalekṣaṇā ,
evamastvityathoktvā tu jagāma nahuṣaṁ prati.
5. iti uktā devarājena patnī sā kamalekṣaṇā evam
astu iti atha uktvā tu jagāma nahuṣam prati
5. Having been thus addressed by the king of gods, that lotus-eyed wife then said, 'So be it,' and went towards Nahuṣa.
नहुषस्तां ततो दृष्ट्वा विस्मितो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
स्वागतं ते वरारोहे किं करोमि शुचिस्मिते ॥६॥
6. nahuṣastāṁ tato dṛṣṭvā vismito vākyamabravīt ,
svāgataṁ te varārohe kiṁ karomi śucismite.
6. nahuṣaḥ tām tataḥ dṛṣṭvā vismitaḥ vākyam abravīt
svāgatam te varārohe kim karomi śucismite
6. Nahuṣa, having seen her, was then astonished and said, 'Welcome to you, O beautiful lady (varārohā)! What can I do for you, O lovely-smiling one (śucismitā)?'
भक्तं मां भज कल्याणि किमिच्छसि मनस्विनि ।
तव कल्याणि यत्कार्यं तत्करिष्ये सुमध्यमे ॥७॥
7. bhaktaṁ māṁ bhaja kalyāṇi kimicchasi manasvini ,
tava kalyāṇi yatkāryaṁ tatkariṣye sumadhyame.
7. bhaktam mām bhaja kalyāṇi kim icchasi manasvini
tava kalyāṇi yat kāryam tat kariṣye sumadhyame
7. O auspicious one, favor me, your devotee. O noble lady, what do you wish? O auspicious one, whatever task is yours, I will perform that, O slender-waisted one.
न च व्रीडा त्वया कार्या सुश्रोणि मयि विश्वस ।
सत्येन वै शपे देवि कर्तास्मि वचनं तव ॥८॥
8. na ca vrīḍā tvayā kāryā suśroṇi mayi viśvasa ,
satyena vai śape devi kartāsmi vacanaṁ tava.
8. na ca vrīḍā tvayā kāryā suśroṇi mayi viśvasa
satyena vai śape devi kartā asmi vacanam tava
8. O beautiful-hipped one, you should not feel any shame. Trust in me. Indeed, O goddess, I swear by truth that I will carry out your command.
इन्द्राण्युवाच ।
यो मे त्वया कृतः कालस्तमाकाङ्क्षे जगत्पते ।
ततस्त्वमेव भर्ता मे भविष्यसि सुराधिप ॥९॥
9. indrāṇyuvāca ,
yo me tvayā kṛtaḥ kālastamākāṅkṣe jagatpate ,
tatastvameva bhartā me bhaviṣyasi surādhipa.
9. indrāṇī uvāca yaḥ me tvayā kṛtaḥ kālaḥ tam ākaṅkṣe
jagatpate tataḥ tvam eva bhartā me bhaviṣyasi surādhipa
9. Indrāṇī said: O lord of the universe, I long for the time you fixed for me. After that, O lord of the gods, you alone will be my husband.
कार्यं च हृदि मे यत्तद्देवराजावधारय ।
वक्ष्यामि यदि मे राजन्प्रियमेतत्करिष्यसि ।
वाक्यं प्रणयसंयुक्तं ततः स्यां वशगा तव ॥१०॥
10. kāryaṁ ca hṛdi me yattaddevarājāvadhāraya ,
vakṣyāmi yadi me rājanpriyametatkariṣyasi ,
vākyaṁ praṇayasaṁyuktaṁ tataḥ syāṁ vaśagā tava.
10. kāryam ca hṛdi me yat tat devarāja
avadhāraya | vakṣyāmi yadi me rājan
priyam etat kariṣyasi | vākyam
praṇayasaṃyuktam tataḥ syām vaśagā tava
10. O king of the gods, understand what matter is in my heart. I will tell you, O king, if you grant me this favor. If you do, then with words full of affection, I shall become obedient to you.
इन्द्रस्य वाजिनो वाहा हस्तिनोऽथ रथास्तथा ।
इच्छाम्यहमिहापूर्वं वाहनं ते सुराधिप ।
यन्न विष्णोर्न रुद्रस्य नासुराणां न रक्षसाम् ॥११॥
11. indrasya vājino vāhā hastino'tha rathāstathā ,
icchāmyahamihāpūrvaṁ vāhanaṁ te surādhipa ,
yanna viṣṇorna rudrasya nāsurāṇāṁ na rakṣasām.
11. indrasya vājinaḥ vāhāḥ hastinaḥ atha
rathāḥ tathā icchāmi aham iha apūrvam
vāhanam te surādhipa yat na viṣṇoḥ
na rudrasya na asurāṇām na rakṣasām
11. Indra has steeds, vehicles, elephants, and chariots. Here, O lord of gods, I desire for you an unprecedented vehicle, one that belongs neither to Viṣṇu, nor to Rudra, nor to the asuras, nor to the rakshasas.
वहन्तु त्वां महाराज ऋषयः संगता विभो ।
सर्वे शिबिकया राजन्नेतद्धि मम रोचते ॥१२॥
12. vahantu tvāṁ mahārāja ṛṣayaḥ saṁgatā vibho ,
sarve śibikayā rājannetaddhi mama rocate.
12. vahantu tvām mahārāja ṛṣayaḥ saṅgatāḥ vibho
sarve śibikayā rājan etat hi mama rocate
12. O great king, O lord, let the assembled sages carry you. O king, let them all carry you in a palanquin; this indeed is pleasing to me.
नासुरेषु न देवेषु तुल्यो भवितुमर्हसि ।
सर्वेषां तेज आदत्स्व स्वेन वीर्येण दर्शनात् ।
न ते प्रमुखतः स्थातुं कश्चिदिच्छति वीर्यवान् ॥१३॥
13. nāsureṣu na deveṣu tulyo bhavitumarhasi ,
sarveṣāṁ teja ādatsva svena vīryeṇa darśanāt ,
na te pramukhataḥ sthātuṁ kaścidicchati vīryavān.
13. na asureṣu na deveṣu tulyaḥ bhavitum
arhasi sarveṣām tejaḥ ādatva
svena vīryeṇa darśanāt na te pramukhataḥ
sthātum kaścit icchati vīryavān
13. You ought not to be considered equal to either the asuras or the gods. Take the glory of all by your own power, for it is evident from your presence. No powerful being wishes to stand before you.
शल्य उवाच ।
एवमुक्तस्तु नहुषः प्राहृष्यत तदा किल ।
उवाच वचनं चापि सुरेन्द्रस्तामनिन्दिताम् ॥१४॥
14. śalya uvāca ,
evamuktastu nahuṣaḥ prāhṛṣyata tadā kila ,
uvāca vacanaṁ cāpi surendrastāmaninditām.
14. śalyaḥ uvāca evam uktaḥ tu nahuṣaḥ prāhṛṣyata tadā
kila uvāca vacanam ca api surendraḥ tām aninditām
14. Shalya said: Upon being addressed in this manner, Nahuṣa indeed greatly rejoiced at that time, it is said. And the lord of gods (Nahuṣa) then spoke words to that blameless one.
अपूर्वं वाहनमिदं त्वयोक्तं वरवर्णिनि ।
दृढं मे रुचितं देवि त्वद्वशोऽस्मि वरानने ॥१५॥
15. apūrvaṁ vāhanamidaṁ tvayoktaṁ varavarṇini ,
dṛḍhaṁ me rucitaṁ devi tvadvaśo'smi varānane.
15. apūrvam vāhanam idam tvayā uktam varavarṇini
dṛḍham me rucitam devi tvat vaśaḥ asmi varānane
15. O lady of excellent complexion, you have described this unprecedented vehicle. O goddess with a beautiful face, it is indeed greatly pleasing to me; I am under your control.
न ह्यल्पवीर्यो भवति यो वाहान्कुरुते मुनीन् ।
अहं तपस्वी बलवान्भूतभव्यभवत्प्रभुः ॥१६॥
16. na hyalpavīryo bhavati yo vāhānkurute munīn ,
ahaṁ tapasvī balavānbhūtabhavyabhavatprabhuḥ.
16. na hi alpa-vīryaḥ bhavati yaḥ vāhān kurute munīn
aham tapasvī balavān bhūta-bhavya-bhavat-prabhuḥ
16. Indeed, one who takes ascetics (munin) as his vehicles is not weak in power. I am an ascetic (tapasvin), mighty, and the lord of all beings that have been, will be, and are now.
मयि क्रुद्धे जगन्न स्यान्मयि सर्वं प्रतिष्ठितम् ।
देवदानवगन्धर्वाः किंनरोरगराक्षसाः ॥१७॥
17. mayi kruddhe jaganna syānmayi sarvaṁ pratiṣṭhitam ,
devadānavagandharvāḥ kiṁnaroragarākṣasāḥ.
17. mayi kruddhe jagat na syāt mayi sarvam pratiṣṭhitam
deva-dānava-gandharvāḥ kiṃnara-uraga-rākṣasāḥ
17. If I become angry, the world (jagat) would cease to exist; everything is established in me. The Devas, Dānavas, Gandharvas, Kinnaras, Uragas, and Rākṣasas...
न मे क्रुद्धस्य पर्याप्ताः सर्वे लोकाः शुचिस्मिते ।
चक्षुषा यं प्रपश्यामि तस्य तेजो हराम्यहम् ॥१८॥
18. na me kruddhasya paryāptāḥ sarve lokāḥ śucismite ,
cakṣuṣā yaṁ prapaśyāmi tasya tejo harāmyaham.
18. na me kruddhasya paryāptāḥ sarve lokāḥ śucismite
cakṣuṣā yam prapaśyāmi tasya tejaḥ harāmi aham
18. O pure-smiling one (śucismite), all the worlds are insufficient to withstand me when I am angry. Whomever I perceive with my eye, I steal his radiance (tejas).
तस्मात्ते वचनं देवि करिष्यामि न संशयः ।
सप्तर्षयो मां वक्ष्यन्ति सर्वे ब्रह्मर्षयस्तथा ।
पश्य माहात्म्यमस्माकमृद्धिं च वरवर्णिनि ॥१९॥
19. tasmātte vacanaṁ devi kariṣyāmi na saṁśayaḥ ,
saptarṣayo māṁ vakṣyanti sarve brahmarṣayastathā ,
paśya māhātmyamasmākamṛddhiṁ ca varavarṇini.
19. tasmāt te vacanam devi kariṣyāmi na
saṃśayaḥ saptarṣayaḥ mām vakṣyanti
sarve brahmarṣayaḥ tathā paśya
māhātmyam asmākam ṛddhim ca varavarṇini
19. Therefore, O goddess, I shall fulfill your condition; there is no doubt about it. All the seven sages and the brahmin sages will carry me. Behold our greatness and prosperity, O beautiful woman!
एवमुक्त्वा तु तां देवीं विसृज्य च वराननाम् ।
विमाने योजयित्वा स ऋषीन्नियममास्थितान् ॥२०॥
20. evamuktvā tu tāṁ devīṁ visṛjya ca varānanām ,
vimāne yojayitvā sa ṛṣīnniyamamāsthitān.
20. evam uktvā tu tām devīm visṛjya ca varānanām
vimāne yojayitvā saḥ ṛṣīn niyamam āsthitān
20. Having spoken thus, and having dismissed that fair-faced goddess, he then harnessed the sages, who were firm in their observances, to his celestial conveyance.
अब्रह्मण्यो बलोपेतो मत्तो वरमदेन च ।
कामवृत्तः स दुष्टात्मा वाहयामास तानृषीन् ॥२१॥
21. abrahmaṇyo balopeto matto varamadena ca ,
kāmavṛttaḥ sa duṣṭātmā vāhayāmāsa tānṛṣīn.
21. abrahmaṇyaḥ balopetaḥ mattaḥ varamadena ca
kāmavṛttaḥ saḥ duṣṭātmā vāhayām āsa tān ṛṣīn
21. Hostile to Brahmins, endowed with strength, arrogant from the intoxication of his boon, and acting as he pleased, that evil-minded Nahusha caused those sages to carry him.
नहुषेण विसृष्टा च बृहस्पतिमुवाच सा ।
समयोऽल्पावशेषो मे नहुषेणेह यः कृतः ।
शक्रं मृगय शीघ्रं त्वं भक्तायाः कुरु मे दयाम् ॥२२॥
22. nahuṣeṇa visṛṣṭā ca bṛhaspatimuvāca sā ,
samayo'lpāvaśeṣo me nahuṣeṇeha yaḥ kṛtaḥ ,
śakraṁ mṛgaya śīghraṁ tvaṁ bhaktāyāḥ kuru me dayām.
22. nahuṣeṇa visṛṣṭā ca bṛhaspatim uvāca
sā samayaḥ alpāvaśeṣaḥ me nahuṣeṇa
iha yaḥ kṛtaḥ śakram mṛgaya
śīghram tvam bhaktāyāḥ kuru me dayām
22. Dismissed by Nahusha, she then spoke to Bṛhaspati: "The period of the condition that Nahusha made for me here is running short. You must quickly search for Indra, and show compassion to me, your devotee."
बाढमित्येव भगवान्बृहस्पतिरुवाच ताम् ।
न भेतव्यं त्वया देवि नहुषाद्दुष्टचेतसः ॥२३॥
23. bāḍhamityeva bhagavānbṛhaspatiruvāca tām ,
na bhetavyaṁ tvayā devi nahuṣādduṣṭacetasaḥ.
23. bāḍham iti eva bhagavān bṛhaspatiḥ uvāca tām
na bhetavyam tvayā devi nahuṣāt duṣṭacetasaḥ
23. Indeed, the revered Brihaspati said to her, 'O goddess, you should not fear Nahusha, who possesses a wicked mind.'
न ह्येष स्थास्यति चिरं गत एष नराधमः ।
अधर्मज्ञो महर्षीणां वाहनाच्च हतः शुभे ॥२४॥
24. na hyeṣa sthāsyati ciraṁ gata eṣa narādhamaḥ ,
adharmajño maharṣīṇāṁ vāhanācca hataḥ śubhe.
24. na hi eṣaḥ sthāsyati ciram gataḥ eṣaḥ narādhamaḥ
adharmajñaḥ maharṣīṇām vāhanāt ca hataḥ śubhe
24. Indeed, this worst of men will not last long; he is already doomed. He is ignorant of natural law (dharma) and, furthermore, he was struck down by the great sages due to his making them his conveyances, O auspicious one.
इष्टिं चाहं करिष्यामि विनाशायास्य दुर्मतेः ।
शक्रं चाधिगमिष्यामि मा भैस्त्वं भद्रमस्तु ते ॥२५॥
25. iṣṭiṁ cāhaṁ kariṣyāmi vināśāyāsya durmateḥ ,
śakraṁ cādhigamiṣyāmi mā bhaistvaṁ bhadramastu te.
25. iṣṭim ca aham kariṣyāmi vināśāya asya durmateḥ śakram
ca adhigamiṣyāmi mā bhaiḥ tvam bhadram astu te
25. I will perform a ritual (iṣṭi) for the destruction of this evil-minded one, and I will approach Indra. Do not fear; may good fortune be upon you.
ततः प्रज्वाल्य विधिवज्जुहाव परमं हविः ।
बृहस्पतिर्महातेजा देवराजोपलब्धये ॥२६॥
26. tataḥ prajvālya vidhivajjuhāva paramaṁ haviḥ ,
bṛhaspatirmahātejā devarājopalabdhaye.
26. tataḥ prajvālya vidhivāt juhāva paramam
haviḥ bṛhaspatiḥ mahātejāḥ devarājopalabdhaye
26. Then, having kindled (the sacrificial fire) according to ritual injunctions, the greatly resplendent Brihaspati offered the supreme oblation for the purpose of attaining the king of gods (Devendra).
तस्माच्च भगवान्देवः स्वयमेव हुताशनः ।
स्त्रीवेषमद्भुतं कृत्वा सहसान्तरधीयत ॥२७॥
27. tasmācca bhagavāndevaḥ svayameva hutāśanaḥ ,
strīveṣamadbhutaṁ kṛtvā sahasāntaradhīyata.
27. tasmāt ca bhagavān devaḥ svayam eva hutāśanaḥ
strīveṣam adbhutam kṛtvā sahasā antaradhīyata
27. And from that point, the divine Lord Agni (hutāśanaḥ) himself, having assumed an astonishing female disguise, suddenly disappeared.
स दिशः प्रदिशश्चैव पर्वतांश्च वनानि च ।
पृथिवीं चान्तरिक्षं च विचीयातिमनोगतिः ।
निमेषान्तरमात्रेण बृहस्पतिमुपागमत् ॥२८॥
28. sa diśaḥ pradiśaścaiva parvatāṁśca vanāni ca ,
pṛthivīṁ cāntarikṣaṁ ca vicīyātimanogatiḥ ,
nimeṣāntaramātreṇa bṛhaspatimupāgamat.
28. sa diśaḥ pradiśaḥ ca eva parvatān
ca vanāni ca pṛthivīm ca antarikṣam
ca vicīya atimanogatiḥ
nimeṣāntaramātreṇa bṛhaspatim upāgamat
28. He, with a speed surpassing thought, searched thoroughly the directions, intermediate directions, mountains, forests, the earth, and the sky. In the mere interval of a blink, he approached Bṛhaspati.
अग्निरुवाच ।
बृहस्पते न पश्यामि देवराजमहं क्वचित् ।
आपः शेषाः सदा चापः प्रवेष्टुं नोत्सहाम्यहम् ।
न मे तत्र गतिर्ब्रह्मन्किमन्यत्करवाणि ते ॥२९॥
29. agniruvāca ,
bṛhaspate na paśyāmi devarājamahaṁ kvacit ,
āpaḥ śeṣāḥ sadā cāpaḥ praveṣṭuṁ notsahāmyaham ,
na me tatra gatirbrahmankimanyatkaravāṇi te.
29. agniḥ uvāca bṛhaspate na paśyāmi devarājam
aham kvacit āpaḥ śeṣāḥ sadā ca āpaḥ
praveṣṭum na utsahāmi aham na me
tatra gatiḥ brahman kim anyat karavāṇi te
29. Agni said, "O Bṛhaspati, I do not see the king of gods (Indra) anywhere. The waters alone remain, and I am always unable to enter water. O revered one (brahman), there is no access for me there. What else should I do for you?"
शल्य उवाच ।
तमब्रवीद्देवगुरुरपो विश महाद्युते ॥३०॥
30. śalya uvāca ,
tamabravīddevagururapo viśa mahādyute.
30. śalyaḥ uvāca tam abravīt
devaguruḥ āpaḥ viśa mahādyute
30. Śalya said, "The preceptor of the gods (devaguruḥ) said to him, 'O greatly brilliant one (mahādyute), enter the waters!'"
अग्निरुवाच ।
नापः प्रवेष्टुं शक्ष्यामि क्षयो मेऽत्र भविष्यति ।
शरणं त्वां प्रपन्नोऽस्मि स्वस्ति तेऽस्तु महाद्युते ॥३१॥
31. agniruvāca ,
nāpaḥ praveṣṭuṁ śakṣyāmi kṣayo me'tra bhaviṣyati ,
śaraṇaṁ tvāṁ prapanno'smi svasti te'stu mahādyute.
31. agniḥ uvāca na āpaḥ praveṣṭum śakṣyāmi kṣayaḥ me atra
bhaviṣyati śaraṇam tvām prapannaḥ asmi svasti te astu mahādyute
31. Agni said: "I am unable to enter the waters; destruction will befall me there. I have come to you for refuge. May there be well-being for you, O greatly resplendent one!"
अद्भ्योऽग्निर्ब्रह्मतः क्षत्रमश्मनो लोहमुत्थितम् ।
तेषां सर्वत्रगं तेजः स्वासु योनिषु शाम्यति ॥३२॥
32. adbhyo'gnirbrahmataḥ kṣatramaśmano lohamutthitam ,
teṣāṁ sarvatragaṁ tejaḥ svāsu yoniṣu śāmyati.
32. adbhyaḥ agniḥ brahmataḥ kṣatram aśmanaḥ loham
utthitam teṣām sarvatragam tejaḥ svāsu yoniṣu śāmyati
32. Fire arises from water, the warrior class (kṣatram) from the ultimate reality (brahman), and iron from stone. The all-pervading energy (tejas) of these subsides in their own sources.
