सुपर्ण उवाच ।
इयं दिग्दयिता राज्ञो वरुणस्य तु गोपतेः ।
सदा सलिलराजस्य प्रतिष्ठा चादिरेव च ॥१॥
1. suparṇa uvāca ,
iyaṁ digdayitā rājño varuṇasya tu gopateḥ ,
sadā salilarājasya pratiṣṭhā cādireva ca.

1. Suparṇa said: "This direction is cherished by King Varuṇa, the lord of the waters. It is always the foundation and origin for the king of the waters."
अत्र पश्चादहः सूर्यो विसर्जयति भाः स्वयम् ।
पश्चिमेत्यभिविख्याता दिगियं द्विजसत्तम ॥२॥
2. atra paścādahaḥ sūryo visarjayati bhāḥ svayam ,
paścimetyabhivikhyātā digiyaṁ dvijasattama.

paścimā iti abhivikhyātā dik iyam dvijasattama
2. O best among the twice-born (dvija), here, in the west, the sun itself emits its light, and this direction is therefore well-known as the western one.
यादसामत्र राज्येन सलिलस्य च गुप्तये ।
कश्यपो भगवान्देवो वरुणं स्माभ्यषेचयत् ॥३॥
3. yādasāmatra rājyena salilasya ca guptaye ,
kaśyapo bhagavāndevo varuṇaṁ smābhyaṣecayat.

kaśyapaḥ bhagavān devaḥ varuṇam sma abhyaṣecayat
3. Here, for the sovereignty over aquatic creatures and for the protection of water, the venerable divine sage Kaśyapa consecrated Varuṇa.
अत्र पीत्वा समस्तान्वै वरुणस्य रसांस्तु षट् ।
जायते तरुणः सोमः शुक्लस्यादौ तमिस्रहा ॥४॥
4. atra pītvā samastānvai varuṇasya rasāṁstu ṣaṭ ,
jāyate taruṇaḥ somaḥ śuklasyādau tamisrahā.

4. Here, having indeed imbibed all six essences (rasa) of Varuṇa, the young moon (soma), the dispeller of darkness, appears at the beginning of the bright fortnight.
अत्र पश्चात्कृता दैत्या वायुना संयतास्तदा ।
निःश्वसन्तो महानागैरर्दिताः सुषुपुर्द्विज ॥५॥
5. atra paścātkṛtā daityā vāyunā saṁyatāstadā ,
niḥśvasanto mahānāgairarditāḥ suṣupurdvija.

niḥśvasantaḥ mahānāgaiḥ arditāḥ suṣupuḥ dvija
5. O twice-born one (dvija), here, the Daityas, having been subdued, then restrained by Vāyu (the wind god), and tormented by great serpents, slept while sighing deeply.
अत्र सूर्यं प्रणयिनं प्रतिगृह्णाति पर्वतः ।
अस्तो नाम यतः संध्या पश्चिमा प्रतिसर्पति ॥६॥
6. atra sūryaṁ praṇayinaṁ pratigṛhṇāti parvataḥ ,
asto nāma yataḥ saṁdhyā paścimā pratisarpati.
6. atra sūryam praṇayinam pratigṛhṇāti parvataḥ
astaḥ nāma yataḥ sandhyā paścimā pratisarpati
6. Here, the mountain named Asta receives the beloved sun. From this very place, the western twilight emerges.
अतो रात्रिश्च निद्रा च निर्गता दिवसक्षये ।
जायते जीवलोकस्य हर्तुमर्धमिवायुषः ॥७॥
7. ato rātriśca nidrā ca nirgatā divasakṣaye ,
jāyate jīvalokasya hartumardhamivāyuṣaḥ.
7. atas rātriḥ ca nidrā ca nirgatā divasakṣaye
jāyate jīvalokasya hartum ardham iva āyuṣaḥ
7. From this, night and sleep emerge at the end of the day. They arise for the world of living beings as if to take away half of their lifespan.
अत्र देवीं दितिं सुप्तामात्मप्रसवधारिणीम् ।
विगर्भामकरोच्छक्रो यत्र जातो मरुद्गणः ॥८॥
8. atra devīṁ ditiṁ suptāmātmaprasavadhāriṇīm ,
vigarbhāmakarocchakro yatra jāto marudgaṇaḥ.
8. atra devīm ditim suptām ātmaprasavadhāriṇīm
vigarbhām akarot śakraḥ yatra jātaḥ marudgaṇaḥ
8. Here, Śakra (Indra) rendered the sleeping goddess Diti, who was carrying her own offspring, without a foetus (vigarbhām). It was from this event that the host of Maruts was born.
अत्र मूलं हिमवतो मन्दरं याति शाश्वतम् ।
अपि वर्षसहस्रेण न चास्यान्तोऽधिगम्यते ॥९॥
9. atra mūlaṁ himavato mandaraṁ yāti śāśvatam ,
api varṣasahasreṇa na cāsyānto'dhigamyate.
9. atra mūlam himavataḥ mandaram yāti śāśvatam
api varṣasahasreṇa na ca asya antaḥ adhigamyate
9. Here, the base of the Himavat (Himalaya) mountain extends to the eternal Mount Mandara. Even after a thousand years, its end cannot be found.
अत्र काञ्चनशैलस्य काञ्चनाम्बुवहस्य च ।
उदधेस्तीरमासाद्य सुरभिः क्षरते पयः ॥१०॥
10. atra kāñcanaśailasya kāñcanāmbuvahasya ca ,
udadhestīramāsādya surabhiḥ kṣarate payaḥ.
10. atra kāñcanaśailasya kāñcanāmbuvahasya ca
udadheḥ tīram āsādya surabhiḥ kṣarate payaḥ
10. Here, having reached the shore of the ocean, near the golden mountain and the golden cloud, the divine cow Surabhi yields milk.
अत्र मध्ये समुद्रस्य कबन्धः प्रतिदृश्यते ।
स्वर्भानोः सूर्यकल्पस्य सोमसूर्यौ जिघांसतः ॥११॥
11. atra madhye samudrasya kabandhaḥ pratidṛśyate ,
svarbhānoḥ sūryakalpasya somasūryau jighāṁsataḥ.

svarbhānoḥ sūryakalpasya somasūryau jighāṃsataḥ
11. Here, in the middle of the ocean, a headless demon (kabandha) appears, belonging to Svabhānu, who is resplendent like the sun and seeks to seize both the moon and the sun.
सुवर्णशिरसोऽप्यत्र हरिरोम्णः प्रगायतः ।
अदृश्यस्याप्रमेयस्य श्रूयते विपुलो ध्वनिः ॥१२॥
12. suvarṇaśiraso'pyatra hariromṇaḥ pragāyataḥ ,
adṛśyasyāprameyasya śrūyate vipulo dhvaniḥ.
12. suvarṇaśirasaḥ api atra hariromṇaḥ pragāyataḥ
adṛśyasya aprameyasya śrūyate vipulaḥ dhvaniḥ
12. Here, too, the mighty sound of the invisible, immeasurable one is heard, whose head is golden and whose hair is tawny, and who sings loudly.
अत्र ध्वजवती नाम कुमारी हरिमेधसः ।
आकाशे तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति तस्थौ सूर्यस्य शासनात् ॥१३॥
13. atra dhvajavatī nāma kumārī harimedhasaḥ ,
ākāśe tiṣṭha tiṣṭheti tasthau sūryasya śāsanāt.
13. atra dhvajavatī nāma kumārī harimedhasaḥ ākāśe
tiṣṭha tiṣṭha iti tasthau sūryasya śāsanāt
13. Here, the maiden named Dhvajavatī, belonging to Harimedhas, stood in the sky by the command of the sun, uttering 'Stay! Stay!'
अत्र वायुस्तथा वह्निरापः खं चैव गालव ।
आह्निकं चैव नैशं च दुःखस्पर्शं विमुञ्चति ।
अतः प्रभृति सूर्यस्य तिर्यगावर्तते गतिः ॥१४॥
14. atra vāyustathā vahnirāpaḥ khaṁ caiva gālava ,
āhnikaṁ caiva naiśaṁ ca duḥkhasparśaṁ vimuñcati ,
ataḥ prabhṛti sūryasya tiryagāvartate gatiḥ.
14. atra vāyuḥ tathā vahniḥ āpaḥ kham ca
eva gālava āhnikam ca eva naiśam
ca duḥkhasparśam vimuñcati ataḥ
prabhṛti sūryasya tiryāk āvartate gatiḥ
14. O Gālava, at this place, air, fire, water, and space, as well as the daily and nightly unpleasantness, are released. From this point onwards, the sun's movement revolves obliquely.
अत्र ज्योतींषि सर्वाणि विशन्त्यादित्यमण्डलम् ।
अष्टाविंशतिरात्रं च चङ्क्रम्य सह भानुना ।
निष्पतन्ति पुनः सूर्यात्सोमसंयोगयोगतः ॥१५॥
15. atra jyotīṁṣi sarvāṇi viśantyādityamaṇḍalam ,
aṣṭāviṁśatirātraṁ ca caṅkramya saha bhānunā ,
niṣpatanti punaḥ sūryātsomasaṁyogayogataḥ.
15. atra jyotīṃṣi sarvāṇi viśanti
ādityamaṇḍalam aṣṭāviṃśatirātram ca
caṅkramya saha bhānunā niṣpatanti
punaḥ sūryāt somasaṃyogayogataḥ
15. Here, all the celestial luminaries enter the solar orb. After wandering with the sun for twenty-eight nights, they emerge again from the sun by virtue of the connection (yoga) of their conjunction with the moon.
अत्र नित्यं स्रवन्तीनां प्रभवः सागरोदयः ।
अत्र लोकत्रयस्यापस्तिष्ठन्ति वरुणाश्रयाः ॥१६॥
16. atra nityaṁ sravantīnāṁ prabhavaḥ sāgarodayaḥ ,
atra lokatrayasyāpastiṣṭhanti varuṇāśrayāḥ.
16. atra nityam sravantīnām prabhavaḥ sāgarodayaḥ
atra lokatrayasya āpaḥ tiṣṭhanti varuṇāśrayāḥ
16. At this place is the eternal source of rivers and the rising (udaya) of the ocean. Also at this place, the waters of the three worlds reside, with Varuṇa as their support.
अत्र पन्नगराजस्याप्यनन्तस्य निवेशनम् ।
अनादिनिधनस्यात्र विष्णोः स्थानमनुत्तमम् ॥१७॥
17. atra pannagarājasyāpyanantasya niveśanam ,
anādinidhanasyātra viṣṇoḥ sthānamanuttamam.
17. atra pannagarājasya api anantasya niveśanam
anādinidhanasya atra viṣṇoḥ sthānam anuttamam
17. At this place is also the dwelling of Ananta, the king of serpents. Here, too, is the unsurpassed abode of Viṣṇu, who is without beginning or end.
अत्रानलसखस्यापि पवनस्य निवेशनम् ।
महर्षेः कश्यपस्यात्र मारीचस्य निवेशनम् ॥१८॥
18. atrānalasakhasyāpi pavanasya niveśanam ,
maharṣeḥ kaśyapasyātra mārīcasya niveśanam.
18. atra analasakhasya api pavanasya niveśanam
maharṣeḥ kaśyapasya atra mārīcasya niveśanam
18. Here is the dwelling of Vayu, the friend of fire. Also, here is the abode of the great sage Kashyapa, son of Marīci.
एष ते पश्चिमो मार्गो दिग्द्वारेण प्रकीर्तितः ।
ब्रूहि गालव गच्छावो बुद्धिः का द्विजसत्तम ॥१९॥
19. eṣa te paścimo mārgo digdvāreṇa prakīrtitaḥ ,
brūhi gālava gacchāvo buddhiḥ kā dvijasattama.

brūhi gālava gacchāvaḥ buddhiḥ kā dvijasattama
19. This western path has been explained to you through the cardinal direction. Tell me, O Gālava, best among the twice-born (dvija), what is your intention? Let us go!
