13. Matali said: "O Kakutstha, O tiger among men, this excellent chariot, yoked to green horses, is victorious and belongs to Indra. With this magnificent chariot, Indra has slain hundreds of Daityas and Danavas in battle."

māyā iyam rākṣasasya iti tam uvāca vibhīṣaṇaḥ
15. Though spoken to thus, Rama, the descendant of Raghu, doubted Matali's true words, thinking, "This is the demon's (māyā) illusion." Then Vibhishana spoke to him.

ātiṣṭha ratham śīghram imam aindram mahādyute
16. O tiger among men, O highly radiant one, this is not a magical illusion (māyā) created by the wicked Rāvaṇa. Therefore, quickly ascend this chariot belonging to Indra.

17. Then, the joyful Rāma (Kakutstha), having said 'So be it' to Vibhīṣaṇa, quickly attacked Rāvaṇa (Daśagrīva) with his chariot, filled with wrath.

siṃhanādāḥ sapaṭahā divi divyāḥ ca nānadan
18. When Rāvaṇa was fiercely attacked, all creatures cried out 'Hāhā!' (in alarm or despair). In the sky, divine beings roared like lions, accompanied by drums, and they resounded loudly.

19. sa rāmāya mahāghoram visasarja niśācaraḥ śūlam
indrāśaniprakhyam brahmadaṇḍam iva udyatam
19. That night-roamer (Rāvaṇa) hurled a very terrible spear towards Rāma, one that resembled Indra's thunderbolt and was like Brahmā's raised staff.

20. tat śūlam antarā rāmaḥ ciccheda niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ
tat dṛṣṭvā duṣkaram karma rāvaṇam bhayam āviśat
20. Rama cut that spear in the middle with sharp arrows. Upon seeing this arduous deed, fear seized Ravana.

21. tataḥ kruddhaḥ sasarja āśu daśagrīvaḥ śitān
śarān sahasrāyutaśaḥ rāme śastrāṇi vividhāni ca
21. Then, the enraged Dashagriva (Ravana) swiftly discharged sharp arrows, and various other weapons by the thousands and tens of thousands, at Rama.
22. tato bhuśuṇḍīḥ śūlāṁśca musalāni paraśvadhān ,

22. tataḥ bhuśuṇḍīḥ śūlān ca musalāni paraśvadhān
śaktīḥ ca vividhākārāḥ śataghnīḥ ca śitakṣurāḥ
22. Then (he discharged) clubs, spears, maces, and battle-axes; and also javelins of various forms, and *śataghnī* weapons (which kill a hundred) that had sharp edges.
23. tāṁ māyāṁ vikṛtāṁ dṛṣṭvā daśagrīvasya rakṣasaḥ ,

23. tām māyām vikṛtām dṛṣṭvā daśagrīvasya rakṣasaḥ
bhayāt pradudruvuḥ sarve vānarāḥ sarvatodiśam
23. Seeing that monstrous illusion (māyā) created by the demon Dashagriva (Ravana), all the monkeys, seized by fear, fled in every direction.
24. tataḥ supatraṁ sumukhaṁ hemapuṅkhaṁ śarottamam ,

24. tataḥ supatram sumukham hemapuṅkham śarottamam
tūṇāt ādāya kākutsthaḥ brahmāstreṇa yuyjoja ha
24. Then, Rama (kākutstha), having taken from his quiver the best of arrows - which was well-feathered, well-pointed, and had a golden shaft - imbued it with the divine weapon (brahmāstra).

25. tam bāṇavaryam rāmeṇa brahmāstreṇa abhimantritam
jahṛṣuḥ devagandharvāḥ dṛṣṭvā śakrapurogamāḥ
25. Having seen that excellent arrow consecrated by Rama with the divine weapon (brahmāstra), the gods (deva) and celestial musicians (gandharva), led by Indra (śakra), greatly rejoiced.

26. alpāvaśeṣamāyuśca tato'manyanta rakṣasaḥ ,

26. alpāvaśeṣam āyuḥ ca tataḥ amanyanta rakṣasaḥ
brahmāstrodīraṇāt śatroḥ devagandharvakiṃnarāḥ
26. And then, the Rākṣasas considered their lives to be of very short duration. Similarly, because of the launching of the divine weapon (brahmāstra), the gods (deva), celestial musicians (gandharva), and kiṃnaras considered the enemy's (Rāvaṇa's) lifespan to be limited.

27. tataḥ sasarja tam rāmaḥ śaram apratimaujasam
rāvaṇāntakaram ghoram brahmadaṇḍam iva udyatam
27. Then Rama released that arrow, which possessed incomparable power, was destined to destroy Rāvaṇa, and was dreadful like the upraised staff of Brahmā.

28. sa tena rākṣasaśreṣṭhaḥ sarathaḥ sāśvasārathiḥ
prajajvāla mahājvālena agninā abhipariṣkṛtaḥ
28. The best of Rākṣasas (Rāvaṇa), along with his chariot, horses, and charioteer, was completely enveloped and blazed fiercely by that fire, which possessed a tremendous flame.

29. tataḥ prahṛṣṭāḥ tridaśāḥ sagandharvāḥ sacāraṇāḥ
nihatam rāvaṇam dṛṣṭvā rāmeṇa akliṣṭakarmaṇā
29. Then, the gods, along with the Gandharvas and Cāraṇas, were greatly delighted after seeing Rāvaṇa slain by Rāma, whose actions were effortless (akliṣṭakarma).

30. tatyajuḥ tam mahābhāgam pañca bhūtāni rāvaṇam
bhraṃśitaḥ sarvalokeṣu sa hi brahmāstratejasā
30. The five elements abandoned that great Rāvaṇa, for he was indeed diminished in all worlds by the power of the Brahmāstra.
31. śarīradhātavo hyasya māṁsaṁ rudhirameva ca ,

31. śarīradhātavaḥ hi asya māṃsam rudhiram eva ca neśuḥ
brahmāstranirdagdhāḥ na ca bhasma api adṛśyata
31. Indeed, his bodily constituents - his flesh and even his blood - perished, utterly consumed by the Brahmāstra, and not even ash was visible.
