लोमश उवाच ।
यदा त्वमन्यतागस्त्यो गार्हस्थ्ये तां क्षमामिति ।
तदाभिगम्य प्रोवाच वैदर्भं पृथिवीपतिम् ॥१॥
1. lomaśa uvāca ,
yadā tvamanyatāgastyo gārhasthye tāṁ kṣamāmiti ,
tadābhigamya provāca vaidarbhaṁ pṛthivīpatim.
1. lomaśaḥ uvāca yadā tu amanyata agastyaḥ gārhasthye tām
kṣamā iti tadā abhigamya provāca vaidarbham pṛthivīpatim
1. Lomasa said: When Agastya considered her suitable for the householder's life, he then approached the king of Vidarbha and spoke to him.
राजन्निवेशे बुद्धिर्मे वर्तते पुत्रकारणात् ।
वरये त्वां महीपाल लोपामुद्रां प्रयच्छ मे ॥२॥
2. rājanniveśe buddhirme vartate putrakāraṇāt ,
varaye tvāṁ mahīpāla lopāmudrāṁ prayaccha me.
2. rājan niveśe buddhiḥ me vartate putrakāraṇāt
varaye tvām mahīpāla lopāmudrām prayaccha me
2. O King, my mind is set on establishing a family for the sake of a son. I ask you, O protector of the earth, please give Lopamudra to me.
एवमुक्तः स मुनिना महीपालो विचेतनः ।
प्रत्याख्यानाय चाशक्तः प्रदातुमपि नैच्छत ॥३॥
3. evamuktaḥ sa muninā mahīpālo vicetanaḥ ,
pratyākhyānāya cāśaktaḥ pradātumapi naicchata.
3. evam uktaḥ saḥ muninā mahīpālaḥ vicetanaḥ
pratyākhyānāya ca aśaktaḥ pradātum api na aicchat
3. When the sage spoke to him thus, the king was bewildered. He was unable to refuse, yet he also did not wish to give (her away).
ततः स भार्यामभ्येत्य प्रोवाच पृथिवीपतिः ।
महर्षिर्वीर्यवानेष क्रुद्धः शापाग्निना दहेत् ॥४॥
4. tataḥ sa bhāryāmabhyetya provāca pṛthivīpatiḥ ,
maharṣirvīryavāneṣa kruddhaḥ śāpāgninā dahet.
4. tataḥ saḥ bhāryām abhyetya provāca pṛthivīpatiḥ
maharṣiḥ vīryavān eṣaḥ kruddhaḥ śāpāgninā dahet
4. Thereupon, the king approached his wife and said, "This powerful great sage, if angered, might burn (us) with the fire of his curse."
तं तथा दुःखितं दृष्ट्वा सभार्यं पृथिवीपतिम् ।
लोपामुद्राभिगम्येदं काले वचनमब्रवीत् ॥५॥
5. taṁ tathā duḥkhitaṁ dṛṣṭvā sabhāryaṁ pṛthivīpatim ,
lopāmudrābhigamyedaṁ kāle vacanamabravīt.
5. tam tathā duḥkhitam dṛṣṭvā sabhāryam pṛthivīpatim
lopāmudrā abhigamya idam kāle vacanam abravīt
5. Seeing the king thus distressed along with his wife, Lopamudra approached him and spoke these timely words.
न मत्कृते महीपाल पीडामभ्येतुमर्हसि ।
प्रयच्छ मामगस्त्याय त्राह्यात्मानं मया पितः ॥६॥
6. na matkṛte mahīpāla pīḍāmabhyetumarhasi ,
prayaccha māmagastyāya trāhyātmānaṁ mayā pitaḥ.
6. na matkṛte mahīpāla pīḍām abhyetum arhasi
prayaccha mām agastyāya trāhi ātmānam mayā pitaḥ
6. “O King, you should not endure suffering on my account. Give me to Agastya. Protect yourself (ātman) through me, O Father!”
दुहितुर्वचनाद्राजा सोऽगस्त्याय महात्मने ।
लोपामुद्रां ततः प्रादाद्विधिपूर्वं विशां पते ॥७॥
7. duhiturvacanādrājā so'gastyāya mahātmane ,
lopāmudrāṁ tataḥ prādādvidhipūrvaṁ viśāṁ pate.
7. duhituḥ vacanāt rājā saḥ agastyāya mahātmane
lopāmudrām tataḥ prādāt vidhipūrvaṃ viśām pate
7. Then, O lord of the people, at his daughter's word, the king formally gave Lopamudra to the great-souled (mahātman) Agastya.
प्राप्य भार्यामगस्त्यस्तु लोपामुद्रामभाषत ।
महार्हाण्युत्सृजैतानि वासांस्याभरणानि च ॥८॥
8. prāpya bhāryāmagastyastu lopāmudrāmabhāṣata ,
mahārhāṇyutsṛjaitāni vāsāṁsyābharaṇāni ca.
8. prāpya bhāryām agastyaḥ tu lopāmudrām abhāṣata
mahārhāṇi utsṛja etāni vāsāṃsi ābharaṇāni ca
8. Having obtained his wife, Agastya then spoke to Lopamudra: 'Give up these highly valuable clothes and ornaments.'
ततः सा दर्शनीयानि महार्हाणि तनूनि च ।
समुत्ससर्ज रम्भोरूर्वसनान्यायतेक्षणा ॥९॥
9. tataḥ sā darśanīyāni mahārhāṇi tanūni ca ,
samutsasarja rambhorūrvasanānyāyatekṣaṇā.
9. tataḥ sā darśanīyāni mahārhāṇi tanūni ca
samutsasarja rambhorūḥ vasanāni āyathekṣaṇā
9. Then, she, with thighs like plantain stems and long eyes, discarded those beautiful, highly valuable, and delicate garments.
ततश्चीराणि जग्राह वल्कलान्यजिनानि च ।
समानव्रतचर्या च बभूवायतलोचना ॥१०॥
10. tataścīrāṇi jagrāha valkalānyajināni ca ,
samānavratacaryā ca babhūvāyatalocanā.
10. tataḥ cīrāṇi jagrāha valkalāni ajināni ca
samānavratacaryā ca babhūva āyatalocanā
10. Then she accepted ascetic strips, bark garments, and deer skins. And the long-eyed one (āyatalocanā) became one who observed the same ascetic vows (vrata-caryā) [as her husband].
गङ्गाद्वारमथागम्य भगवानृषिसत्तमः ।
उग्रमातिष्ठत तपः सह पत्न्यानुकूलया ॥११॥
11. gaṅgādvāramathāgamya bhagavānṛṣisattamaḥ ,
ugramātiṣṭhata tapaḥ saha patnyānukūlayā.
11. gaṅgādvāram atha āgamya bhagavān ṛṣisattamaḥ
ugram ātiṣṭhata tapaḥ saha patnyā anukūlayā
11. Then, having arrived at Gangadvāra, the revered, excellent sage began to perform severe asceticism (tapas) along with his agreeable wife.
सा प्रीत्या बहुमानाच्च पतिं पर्यचरत्तदा ।
अगस्त्यश्च परां प्रीतिं भार्यायामकरोत्प्रभुः ॥१२॥
12. sā prītyā bahumānācca patiṁ paryacarattadā ,
agastyaśca parāṁ prītiṁ bhāryāyāmakarotprabhuḥ.
12. sā prītyā bahumānāt ca patim paryacarat tadā
agastyaḥ ca parām prītim bhāryāyām akarot prabhuḥ
12. Then, she served her husband with love and great respect. And the lord Agastya, in turn, felt great affection for his wife.
ततो बहुतिथे काले लोपामुद्रां विशां पते ।
तपसा द्योतितां स्नातां ददर्श भगवानृषिः ॥१३॥
13. tato bahutithe kāle lopāmudrāṁ viśāṁ pate ,
tapasā dyotitāṁ snātāṁ dadarśa bhagavānṛṣiḥ.
13. tataḥ bahutithe kāle lopāmudrām viśām pate
tapasā dyotitām snātām dadarśa bhagavān ṛṣiḥ
13. Then, after a considerable passage of time, O lord of the people, the revered sage saw Lopamudra, who was glowing from her asceticism (tapas) and had just bathed.
स तस्याः परिचारेण शौचेन च दमेन च ।
श्रिया रूपेण च प्रीतो मैथुनायाजुहाव ताम् ॥१४॥
14. sa tasyāḥ paricāreṇa śaucena ca damena ca ,
śriyā rūpeṇa ca prīto maithunāyājuhāva tām.
14. sa tasyāḥ paricāreṇa śaucena ca damena ca
śriyā rūpeṇa ca prītaḥ maithunāya ājuhāva tām
14. Pleased by her service, her purity, her self-control, and also by her splendor and beauty, he invited her for conjugal union.
ततः सा प्राञ्जलिर्भूत्वा लज्जमानेव भामिनी ।
तदा सप्रणयं वाक्यं भगवन्तमथाब्रवीत् ॥१५॥
15. tataḥ sā prāñjalirbhūtvā lajjamāneva bhāminī ,
tadā sapraṇayaṁ vākyaṁ bhagavantamathābravīt.
15. tataḥ sā prāñjaliḥ bhūtvā lajjamānā iva bhāminī
tadā sapraṇayam vākyam bhagavantam atha abravīt
15. Then, that beautiful woman, as if blushing, stood with folded hands. At that moment, she spoke affectionate words to the venerable one.
असंशयं प्रजाहेतोर्भार्यां पतिरविन्दत ।
या तु त्वयि मम प्रीतिस्तामृषे कर्तुमर्हसि ॥१६॥
16. asaṁśayaṁ prajāhetorbhāryāṁ patiravindata ,
yā tu tvayi mama prītistāmṛṣe kartumarhasi.
16. asaṃśayam prajāhetoḥ bhāryām patiḥ avindata
yā tu tvayi mama prītiḥ tām ṛṣe kartum arhasi
16. Undoubtedly, a husband obtains a wife for the sake of progeny. But, O sage, whatever love I have for you, you ought to fulfill that.
यथा पितुर्गृहे विप्र प्रासादे शयनं मम ।
तथाविधे त्वं शयने मामुपैतुमिहार्हसि ॥१७॥
17. yathā piturgṛhe vipra prāsāde śayanaṁ mama ,
tathāvidhe tvaṁ śayane māmupaitumihārhasi.
17. yathā pituḥ gṛhe vipra prāsāde śayanam mama
tathāvidhe tvam śayane mām upaitum iha arhasi
17. Just as my bed was in a palace in my father's house, O Brahmin, so too you ought to come to me here, in such a bed.
इच्छामि त्वां स्रग्विणं च भूषणैश्च विभूषितम् ।
उपसर्तुं यथाकामं दिव्याभरणभूषिता ॥१८॥
18. icchāmi tvāṁ sragviṇaṁ ca bhūṣaṇaiśca vibhūṣitam ,
upasartuṁ yathākāmaṁ divyābharaṇabhūṣitā.
18. icchāmi tvām sragviṇam ca bhūṣaṇaiḥ ca vibhūṣitam
upasartum yathākāmam divyābharaṇabhūṣitā
18. I desire to approach you, who are garlanded and adorned with ornaments. I, myself adorned with divine ornaments, wish to approach you as I please.
अगस्त्य उवाच ।
न वै धनानि विद्यन्ते लोपामुद्रे तथा मम ।
यथाविधानि कल्याणि पितुस्तव सुमध्यमे ॥१९॥
19. agastya uvāca ,
na vai dhanāni vidyante lopāmudre tathā mama ,
yathāvidhāni kalyāṇi pitustava sumadhyame.
19. agastyaḥ uvāca | na vai dhanāni vidyante lopāmudre
tathā mama | yathāvidhāni kalyāṇi pituḥ tava sumadhyame
19. Agastya said: "O Lopamudra, O auspicious and slender-waisted one, I certainly do not possess wealth of the same caliber as your father's, wealth that would be appropriate (for you)."
लोपामुद्रोवाच ।
ईशोऽसि तपसा सर्वं समाहर्तुमिहेश्वर ।
क्षणेन जीवलोके यद्वसु किंचन विद्यते ॥२०॥
20. lopāmudrovāca ,
īśo'si tapasā sarvaṁ samāhartumiheśvara ,
kṣaṇena jīvaloke yadvasu kiṁcana vidyate.
20. lopāmudrā uvāca | īśaḥ asi tapasā sarvaṃ samāhartum
iha īśvara | kṣaṇena jīvaloke yat vasu kiñcana vidyate
20. Lopamudra said: "O Lord (īśvara), through your asceticism (tapas), you are capable of gathering all the wealth that exists in this world of living beings within an instant."
अगस्त्य उवाच ।
एवमेतद्यथात्थ त्वं तपोव्ययकरं तु मे ।
यथा तु मे न नश्येत तपस्तन्मां प्रचोदय ॥२१॥
21. agastya uvāca ,
evametadyathāttha tvaṁ tapovyayakaraṁ tu me ,
yathā tu me na naśyeta tapastanmāṁ pracodaya.
21. agastyaḥ uvāca | evam etat yathā āttha tvaṃ tapaḥvyayakaraṃ
tu me | yathā tu me na naśyeta tapaḥ tat mām pracodaya
21. Agastya said: "What you say is true, but such an act would lead to the depletion of my asceticism (tapas). Therefore, please instruct me so that my asceticism (tapas) may not be diminished."
लोपामुद्रोवाच ।
अल्पावशिष्टः कालोऽयमृतौ मम तपोधन ।
न चान्यथाहमिच्छामि त्वामुपैतुं कथंचन ॥२२॥
22. lopāmudrovāca ,
alpāvaśiṣṭaḥ kālo'yamṛtau mama tapodhana ,
na cānyathāhamicchāmi tvāmupaituṁ kathaṁcana.
22. lopāmudrā uvāca | alpaavaśiṣṭaḥ kālaḥ ayam ṛtau mama tapaḥdhana
| na ca anyathā aham icchāmi tvām upaitum kathaṃcana
22. Lopamudra said: "O one whose wealth is asceticism (tapas), the time remaining for my fertile period is short. And I do not wish to unite with you in any other manner."
न चापि धर्ममिच्छामि विलोप्तुं ते तपोधन ।
एतत्तु मे यथाकामं संपादयितुमर्हसि ॥२३॥
23. na cāpi dharmamicchāmi viloptuṁ te tapodhana ,
etattu me yathākāmaṁ saṁpādayitumarhasi.
23. na ca api dharmam icchāmi viloptum te tapodhana
etat tu me yathākāmam saṃpādayitum arhasi
23. O ascetic (tapodhana), I certainly do not wish to cause you to violate your righteous conduct (dharma). However, you should fulfill this wish of mine as I desire.
अगस्त्य उवाच ।
यद्येष कामः सुभगे तव बुद्ध्या विनिश्चितः ।
हन्त गच्छाम्यहं भद्रे चर काममिह स्थिता ॥२४॥
24. agastya uvāca ,
yadyeṣa kāmaḥ subhage tava buddhyā viniścitaḥ ,
hanta gacchāmyahaṁ bhadre cara kāmamiha sthitā.
24. agastyaḥ uvāca yadi eṣaḥ kāmaḥ subhage tava buddhyā
viniścitaḥ hanta gacchāmi aham bhadre cara kāmam iha sthitā
24. Agastya said, "O fortunate one (subhage), if this desire of yours has indeed been firmly determined by your intellect, then, O gracious one (bhadre), I shall go. You remain here and fulfill your desire."
