युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
अन्तर्हितानि भूतानि रक्षांसि बलवन्ति च ।
अग्निना तपसा चैव शक्यं गन्तुं वृकोदर ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
antarhitāni bhūtāni rakṣāṁsi balavanti ca ,
agninā tapasā caiva śakyaṁ gantuṁ vṛkodara.
1. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca antasahitāni bhūtāni rakṣāṃsi
balavanti ca agninā tapasā ca eva śakyam gantum vṛkodara
1. Yudhiṣṭhira said: "O Vṛkodara (Bhīma), the beings here are concealed, and the Rākṣasas are powerful. It is indeed possible to proceed only through fire and by the power of asceticism (tapas)."
संनिवर्तय कौन्तेय क्षुत्पिपासे बलान्वयात् ।
ततो बलं च दाक्ष्यं च संश्रयस्व कुरूद्वह ॥२॥
2. saṁnivartaya kaunteya kṣutpipāse balānvayāt ,
tato balaṁ ca dākṣyaṁ ca saṁśrayasva kurūdvaha.
2. saṃnivartaya kaunteya kṣutpipāse balānvayāt
tataḥ balam ca dākṣyam ca saṃśrayasva kurūdvaha
2. "O son of Kuntī (Bhīma), restrain your hunger and thirst through your inherent strength. Therefore, O leader of the Kurus, rely on both strength and skill."
ऋषेस्त्वया श्रुतं वाक्यं कैलासं पर्वतं प्रति ।
बुद्ध्या प्रपश्य कौन्तेय कथं कृष्णा गमिष्यति ॥३॥
3. ṛṣestvayā śrutaṁ vākyaṁ kailāsaṁ parvataṁ prati ,
buddhyā prapaśya kaunteya kathaṁ kṛṣṇā gamiṣyati.
3. ṛṣeḥ tvayā śrutam vākyam kailāsam parvatam prati
| buddhyā prapaśya kaunteya katham kṛṣṇā gamiṣyati
3. You have heard the words of the sage concerning Mount Kailasa. O son of Kunti, discern with your intellect (buddhi) how Krishna (Draupadi) will go.
अथ वा सहदेवेन धौम्येन च सहाभिभो ।
सूदैः पौरोगवैश्चैव सर्वैश्च परिचारकैः ॥४॥
4. atha vā sahadevena dhaumyena ca sahābhibho ,
sūdaiḥ paurogavaiścaiva sarvaiśca paricārakaiḥ.
4. atha vā sahadevena dhaumyena ca saha abhibho |
sūdaiḥ paurogavaiḥ ca eva sarvaiḥ ca paricārakaiḥ
4. Or, O lord (abhibho), with Sahadeva, with Dhaumya, with the cooks, the chief attendants, and all the servants.
रथैरश्वैश्च ये चान्ये विप्राः क्लेशासहाः पथि ।
सर्वैस्त्वं सहितो भीम निवर्तस्वायतेक्षण ॥५॥
5. rathairaśvaiśca ye cānye viprāḥ kleśāsahāḥ pathi ,
sarvaistvaṁ sahito bhīma nivartasvāyatekṣaṇa.
5. rathaiḥ aśvaiḥ ca ye ca anye viprāḥ kleśāsahāḥ pathi
| sarvaiḥ tvam sahitaḥ bhīma nivartasva āyatekṣaṇa
5. O Bhima, O long-eyed one (āyatekṣaṇa), you, accompanied by all these - by chariots, by horses, and by those other brahmins (viprāḥ) who cannot endure hardship on the path - must turn back.
त्रयो वयं गमिष्यामो लघ्वाहारा यतव्रताः ।
अहं च नकुलश्चैव लोमशश्च महातपाः ॥६॥
6. trayo vayaṁ gamiṣyāmo laghvāhārā yatavratāḥ ,
ahaṁ ca nakulaścaiva lomaśaśca mahātapāḥ.
6. trayaḥ vayam gamiṣyāmaḥ laghvāhārāḥ yatavratāḥ
| aham ca nakulaḥ ca eva lomaśaḥ ca mahātapāḥ
6. Only three of us will go: I, Nakula, and Lomasa of great austerity (tapas) - we will eat light meals and have restrained vows (vrata).
ममागमनमाकाङ्क्षन्गङ्गाद्वारे समाहितः ।
वसेह द्रौपदीं रक्षन्यावदागमनं मम ॥७॥
7. mamāgamanamākāṅkṣangaṅgādvāre samāhitaḥ ,
vaseha draupadīṁ rakṣanyāvadāgamanaṁ mama.
7. mama āgamanam ākaṅkṣan gaṅgādvāre samāhitaḥ
vasa iha draupadīm rakṣan yāvat āgamanam mama
7. Awaiting my arrival, you should stay here at Gangadwara, composed and protecting Draupadi, until I return.
भीम उवाच ।
राजपुत्री श्रमेणार्ता दुःखार्ता चैव भारत ।
व्रजत्येव हि कल्याणी श्वेतवाहदिदृक्षया ॥८॥
8. bhīma uvāca ,
rājaputrī śrameṇārtā duḥkhārtā caiva bhārata ,
vrajatyeva hi kalyāṇī śvetavāhadidṛkṣayā.
8. bhīmaḥ uvāca rājaputrī śrameṇa ārtā duḥkha ārtā ca
eva bhārata vrajati eva hi kalyāṇī śvetavāha didṛkṣayā
8. Bhima said: 'O Bharata, the princess, who is suffering from fatigue and sorrow, is indeed proceeding, the blessed one, with the intention of seeing Arjuna (Śvetavāha).'
तव चाप्यरतिस्तीव्रा वर्धते तमपश्यतः ।
किं पुनः सहदेवं च मां च कृष्णां च भारत ॥९॥
9. tava cāpyaratistīvrā vardhate tamapaśyataḥ ,
kiṁ punaḥ sahadevaṁ ca māṁ ca kṛṣṇāṁ ca bhārata.
9. tava ca api aratiḥ tīvrā vardhate tam apaśyataḥ
kim punaḥ sahadevam ca mām ca kṛṣṇām ca bhārata
9. And your intense restlessness increases because you do not see him. How much more (must it increase) for Sahadeva, me, and Draupadi, O Bharata?
रथाः कामं निवर्तन्तां सर्वे च परिचारकाः ।
सूदाः पौरोगवाश्चैव मन्यते यत्र नो भवान् ॥१०॥
10. rathāḥ kāmaṁ nivartantāṁ sarve ca paricārakāḥ ,
sūdāḥ paurogavāścaiva manyate yatra no bhavān.
10. rathāḥ kāmam nivartantām sarve ca paricārakāḥ
sūdāḥ paurogavāḥ ca eva manyate yatra naḥ bhavān
10. Let the chariots, all the attendants, the cooks, and the chief attendants indeed return to wherever your honor deems it suitable for us.
न ह्यहं हातुमिच्छामि भवन्तमिह कर्हिचित् ।
शैलेऽस्मिन्राक्षसाकीर्णे दुर्गेषु विषमेषु च ॥११॥
11. na hyahaṁ hātumicchāmi bhavantamiha karhicit ,
śaile'sminrākṣasākīrṇe durgeṣu viṣameṣu ca.
11. na hi aham hātum icchāmi bhavantam iha karhicit
śaile asmin rākṣasākīrṇe durgeṣu viṣameṣu ca
11. Indeed, I do not ever wish to abandon you here on this mountain, which is crowded with Rākṣasas and has difficult, uneven places.
इयं चापि महाभागा राजपुत्री यतव्रता ।
त्वामृते पुरुषव्याघ्र नोत्सहेद्विनिवर्तितुम् ॥१२॥
12. iyaṁ cāpi mahābhāgā rājaputrī yatavratā ,
tvāmṛte puruṣavyāghra notsahedvinivartitum.
12. iyam ca api mahābhāgā rājaputrī yatavratā tvām
ṛte puruṣavyāghra na utsahet vinivartitum
12. And this highly fortunate princess, resolute in her vows, would not be able to return without you, O tiger among men.
तथैव सहदेवोऽयं सततं त्वामनुव्रतः ।
न जातु विनिवर्तेत मतज्ञो ह्यहमस्य वै ॥१३॥
13. tathaiva sahadevo'yaṁ satataṁ tvāmanuvrataḥ ,
na jātu vinivarteta matajño hyahamasya vai.
13. tathā eva sahadevaḥ ayam satatam tvām anuvrataḥ
na jātu vinivarteta matajñaḥ hi aham asya vai
13. Likewise, this Sahadeva is constantly devoted to you. He would never return, for I surely understand his intentions.
अपि चात्र महाराज सव्यसाचिदिदृक्षया ।
सर्वे लालसभूताः स्म तस्माद्यास्यामहे सह ॥१४॥
14. api cātra mahārāja savyasācididṛkṣayā ,
sarve lālasabhūtāḥ sma tasmādyāsyāmahe saha.
14. api ca atra mahārāja savyasācididṛkṣayā
sarve lālasabhūtāḥ sma tasmāt yāsyāmahe saha
14. Moreover, O great king, we have all become eager here with the desire to see Savyaśācin. Therefore, we shall go together.
यद्यशक्यो रथैर्गन्तुं शैलोऽयं बहुकन्दरः ।
पद्भिरेव गमिष्यामो मा राजन्विमना भव ॥१५॥
15. yadyaśakyo rathairgantuṁ śailo'yaṁ bahukandaraḥ ,
padbhireva gamiṣyāmo mā rājanvimanā bhava.
15. yadi aśakyaḥ rathaiḥ gantum śailaḥ ayam bahukandaraḥ
padbhiḥ eva gamiṣyāmaḥ mā rājan vimanāḥ bhava
15. If this mountain, which is full of many caves, cannot be traversed by chariots, we shall simply proceed on foot. O king, do not be disheartened.
अहं वहिष्ये पाञ्चालीं यत्र यत्र न शक्ष्यति ।
इति मे वर्तते बुद्धिर्मा राजन्विमना भव ॥१६॥
16. ahaṁ vahiṣye pāñcālīṁ yatra yatra na śakṣyati ,
iti me vartate buddhirmā rājanvimanā bhava.
16. aham vahiṣye pāñcālīm yatra yatra na śakṣyati
iti me vartate buddhiḥ mā rājan vimanāḥ bhava
16. I will carry Pāñcālī wherever she is unable to go. This thought (buddhi) is in my mind. O king, do not be disheartened.
सुकुमारौ तथा वीरौ माद्रीनन्दिकरावुभौ ।
दुर्गे संतारयिष्यामि यद्यशक्तौ भविष्यतः ॥१७॥
17. sukumārau tathā vīrau mādrīnandikarāvubhau ,
durge saṁtārayiṣyāmi yadyaśaktau bhaviṣyataḥ.
17. sukumārau tathā vīrau mādrīnandikarau ubhau
durge saṃtārayiṣyāmi yadi aśaktau bhaviṣyataḥ
17. Furthermore, I will carry both the delicate and heroic sons of Mādrī across the difficult terrain, if they become incapable.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
एवं ते भाषमाणस्य बलं भीमाभिवर्धताम् ।
यस्त्वमुत्सहसे वोढुं द्रौपदीं विपुलेऽध्वनि ॥१८॥
18. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
evaṁ te bhāṣamāṇasya balaṁ bhīmābhivardhatām ,
yastvamutsahase voḍhuṁ draupadīṁ vipule'dhvani.
18. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca evam te bhāṣamāṇasya balam bhīma
abhivardhatām yaḥ tvam utsahase voḍhum draupadīm vipule adhvanī
18. Yudhiṣṭhira said: "As you speak in this way, O Bhīma, may your strength (bala) grow, you who undertake to carry Draupadī on this long journey."
यमजौ चापि भद्रं ते नैतदन्यत्र विद्यते ।
बलं च ते यशश्चैव धर्मः कीर्तिश्च वर्धताम् ॥१९॥
19. yamajau cāpi bhadraṁ te naitadanyatra vidyate ,
balaṁ ca te yaśaścaiva dharmaḥ kīrtiśca vardhatām.
19. yamajau ca api bhadram te na etat anyatra vidyate
balam ca te yaśaḥ ca eva dharmaḥ kīrtiḥ ca vardhatām
19. May good fortune be upon you and the twins; such a thing is not found anywhere else. May your strength, fame, your natural law (dharma), and your glory indeed increase.
यस्त्वमुत्सहसे नेतुं भ्रातरौ सह कृष्णया ।
मा ते ग्लानिर्महाबाहो मा च तेऽस्तु पराभवः ॥२०॥
20. yastvamutsahase netuṁ bhrātarau saha kṛṣṇayā ,
mā te glānirmahābāho mā ca te'stu parābhavaḥ.
20. yaḥ tu tvam utsahase netum bhrātarau saha kṛṣṇayā
mā te glāniḥ mahābāho mā ca te astu parābhavaḥ
20. O mighty-armed one, you who undertake to lead the two brothers along with Kṛṣṇā - may weariness not affect you, and may defeat not befall you.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः कृष्णाब्रवीद्वाक्यं प्रहसन्ती मनोरमा ।
गमिष्यामि न संतापः कार्यो मां प्रति भारत ॥२१॥
21. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ kṛṣṇābravīdvākyaṁ prahasantī manoramā ,
gamiṣyāmi na saṁtāpaḥ kāryo māṁ prati bhārata.
21. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca tataḥ kṛṣṇā abravīt vākyam prahasantī
manoramā gamiṣyāmi na saṃtāpaḥ kāryaḥ mām prati bhārata
21. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Then, the charming Kṛṣṇā, laughing, spoke these words: 'I will go. O descendant of Bharata, no distress should be felt concerning me.'
लोमश उवाच ।
तपसा शक्यते गन्तुं पर्वतो गन्धमादनः ।
तपसा चैव कौन्तेय सर्वे योक्ष्यामहे वयम् ॥२२॥
22. lomaśa uvāca ,
tapasā śakyate gantuṁ parvato gandhamādanaḥ ,
tapasā caiva kaunteya sarve yokṣyāmahe vayam.
22. lomaśa uvāca tapasā śakyate gantum parvataḥ gandhamādanaḥ
tapasā ca eva kaunteya sarve yokṣyāmahe vayam
22. Lomaśa said: 'One can go to Mount Gandhamādana through asceticism (tapas). And indeed, O son of Kuntī, all of us will engage in it through asceticism (tapas).'
नकुलः सहदेवश्च भीमसेनश्च पार्थिव ।
अहं च त्वं च कौन्तेय द्रक्ष्यामः श्वेतवाहनम् ॥२३॥
23. nakulaḥ sahadevaśca bhīmasenaśca pārthiva ,
ahaṁ ca tvaṁ ca kaunteya drakṣyāmaḥ śvetavāhanam.
23. nakulaḥ sahadevaḥ ca bhīmasenaḥ ca pārthiva aham
ca tvam ca kaunteya drakṣyāmaḥ śvetavāhanam
23. O King (Yudhiṣṭhira), Nakula, Sahadeva, and Bhimasena, and I, and you, O son of Kunti (Yudhiṣṭhira), we shall see Śvetavāhana (Arjuna).
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवं संभाषमाणास्ते सुबाहोर्विषयं महत् ।
ददृशुर्मुदिता राजन्प्रभूतगजवाजिमत् ॥२४॥
24. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evaṁ saṁbhāṣamāṇāste subāhorviṣayaṁ mahat ,
dadṛśurmuditā rājanprabhūtagajavājimat.
24. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca evam saṃbhāṣamāṇāḥ te subāhoḥ
viṣayam mahat dadṛśuḥ muditāḥ rājan prabhūtagajavājimat
24. Vaiśampāyana said: O King, as they were thus conversing, they joyfully beheld the vast region of Subāhu, rich in many elephants and horses.
किराततङ्गणाकीर्णं कुणिन्दशतसंकुलम् ।
हिमवत्यमरैर्जुष्टं बह्वाश्चर्यसमाकुलम् ॥२५॥
25. kirātataṅgaṇākīrṇaṁ kuṇindaśatasaṁkulam ,
himavatyamarairjuṣṭaṁ bahvāścaryasamākulam.
25. kirātataṅgaṇākīrṇam kuṇindaśatasaṃkulam
himavati amaraiḥ juṣṭam bahvāścaryasamākulam
25. It was populated by Kirātas and Taṅgaṇas, densely crowded with hundreds of Kuṇindas, frequented by gods in the Himalayas, and filled with many wonders.
सुबाहुश्चापि तान्दृष्ट्वा पूजया प्रत्यगृह्णत ।
विषयान्ते कुणिन्दानामीश्वरः प्रीतिपूर्वकम् ॥२६॥
26. subāhuścāpi tāndṛṣṭvā pūjayā pratyagṛhṇata ,
viṣayānte kuṇindānāmīśvaraḥ prītipūrvakam.
26. subāhuḥ ca api tān dṛṣṭvā pūjayā pratyagṛhṇata
viṣayānte kuṇindānām īśvaraḥ prītipūrvakam
26. And King Subāhu, the ruler of the Kuṇindas, upon seeing them at the border of his dominion, received them respectfully and with great affection.
तत्र ते पूजितास्तेन सर्व एव सुखोषिताः ।
प्रतस्थुर्विमले सूर्ये हिमवन्तं गिरिं प्रति ॥२७॥
27. tatra te pūjitāstena sarva eva sukhoṣitāḥ ,
pratasthurvimale sūrye himavantaṁ giriṁ prati.
27. tatra te pūjitāḥ tena sarve eva sukhoṣitāḥ
pratasthuḥ vimale sūrye himavantam girim prati
27. Having been honored by him and having resided comfortably there, they all set out towards the Himālaya mountain when the sun was bright.
इन्द्रसेनमुखांश्चैव भृत्यान्पौरोगवांस्तथा ।
सूदांश्च परिबर्हं च द्रौपद्याः सर्वशो नृप ॥२८॥
28. indrasenamukhāṁścaiva bhṛtyānpaurogavāṁstathā ,
sūdāṁśca paribarhaṁ ca draupadyāḥ sarvaśo nṛpa.
28. indrasena-mukhān ca eva bhṛtyān pauragavān tathā
sūdān ca paribarham ca draupadyāḥ sarvaśaḥ nṛpa
28. O king, they [handed over] all those headed by Indrasena, as well as the servants, the chief attendants, the cooks, and the entire retinue of Draupadī.
राज्ञः कुणिन्दाधिपतेः परिदाय महारथाः ।
पद्भिरेव महावीर्या ययुः कौरवनन्दनाः ॥२९॥
29. rājñaḥ kuṇindādhipateḥ paridāya mahārathāḥ ,
padbhireva mahāvīryā yayuḥ kauravanandanāḥ.
29. rājñaḥ kuṇinda-adhipateḥ paridāya mahā-rathāḥ
padbhiḥ eva mahā-vīryāḥ yayuḥ kaurava-nandanāḥ
29. Having entrusted [the retinue described in the previous verse] to the king, the lord of the Kuṇindas, those great charioteers and highly valorous sons of Kuru (Kauravanandanāḥ) proceeded on foot.
ते शनैः प्राद्रवन्सर्वे कृष्णया सह पाण्डवाः ।
तस्माद्देशात्सुसंहृष्टा द्रष्टुकामा धनंजयम् ॥३०॥
30. te śanaiḥ prādravansarve kṛṣṇayā saha pāṇḍavāḥ ,
tasmāddeśātsusaṁhṛṣṭā draṣṭukāmā dhanaṁjayam.
30. te śanaiḥ pra-adravan sarve kṛṣṇayā saha pāṇḍavāḥ
tasmāt deśāt su-saṃ-hṛṣṭāḥ draṣṭu-kāmāḥ dhanañjayam
30. All the Pāṇḍavas, accompanied by Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), slowly departed from that region, very delighted and eager to see Dhanañjaya (Arjuna).
