1.
Śalya said: But when the gods, with the sages as their leaders, realized that Nahuṣa, the king of the gods, was angry and had a terrifying appearance, they addressed him.

2.
O King of the gods, O Almighty one! Abandon your anger. When you are angry, the entire world, including asuras, gandharvas, kinnaras, and great serpents, becomes terrified.

3.
O noble one, abandon this anger. Those like you do not become angry. She is the wife of another; she is a divine lady. O Lord of gods, please be gracious.

4.
Restrain your mind from sin, from violating another's wife. You are the king of gods; may good fortune be yours. Protect your subjects according to righteousness (dharma).

5.
Thus addressed, he (Indra), deluded by desire (kāma), did not accept that advice. Then the lord of gods spoke this to the gods concerning Indra.

6.
Ahalyā, the glorious wife of a sage, was violated by Indra formerly, while her husband was still alive. Why was he not prevented by you all?

7.
Many cruel acts were indeed committed by Indra in the past, along with unrighteous deeds (dharma) and deceptions. Why was he not stopped by you all?

8.
May the goddess stand by me. This is her supreme well-being. And O gods, in this way, your auspiciousness will always come to pass.

The gods said: "We will bring Indrāṇī, just as you wish, O Lord of heaven. Abandon this anger, O hero, and be pleased, O lord of gods."

10.
Śalya said: "Having spoken thus, O descendant of Bharata, those gods then went with the sages to Bṛhaspati to speak, and they went to Indrāṇī with inauspicious words."

11.
O chief of Brahmins (viprendra), O best among divine sages (devarṣisattama), we understand that Indrani has taken refuge in your house and has been granted protection by you.

12.
O greatly effulgent one (mahādyuti), those gods, along with the Gandharvas and sages, are entreating you, (saying) 'Let Indrani be given to Nahusha.'

13.
Nahusha, the king of gods (devarāja), is superior (viśiṣṭa) to Indra and greatly effulgent (mahādyuti). Let this woman with beautiful hips (varārohā), this beautiful-complexioned one (varavarṇinī), choose him for husband-ship.

14.
But when this was said, that goddess (Indrani), distressed and weeping, shed tears loudly and spoke these words to Bṛhaspati.

śaraṇāgatā asmi te brahman trāhi mām mahataḥ bhayāt
15.
I do not wish Nahuṣa as my husband, even having attended upon him, that lord. I have come to you for refuge (śaraṇāgata), O Brahmin; protect me from this great fear.

niścitam | dharmajñām dharmaśīlām ca na tyaje tvām anindite
16.
Bṛhaspati said: 'I certainly will not abandon one who has come for refuge (śaraṇāgata), O Indrāṇī. I will not abandon you, O blameless one, for you understand the natural law (dharma) and are of virtuous character (dharmaśīla).'

17.
I do not wish to perform an improper act (akārya), especially as I am a Brahmin. I am one who has studied the principles of natural law (dharma), whose character (śīla) is truthful, and who knows the injunctions of natural law (dharmānuśāsana).

18.
I will not do this. Therefore, you best among the gods (surottamāḥ), please go! In this regard, a verse (gīta) was sung by Brahmā long ago; let this be heard.
19. na tasya bījaṁ rohati bījakāle; na cāsya varṣaṁ varṣati varṣakāle ,
bhītaṁ prapannaṁ pradadāti śatrave; na so'ntaraṁ labhate trāṇamicchan.

19.

na saḥ antaram labhate trāṇam icchan
ca asya varṣam varṣati varṣakāle
bhītam prapannam pradadāti śatrave
na saḥ antaram labhate trāṇam icchan
19.
For the one who hands over a frightened, surrendered person to an enemy, his seed does not sprout in due season, nor does rain fall for him in the rainy season. He does not find refuge when seeking protection.
20. moghamannaṁ vindati cāpyacetāḥ; svargāllokādbhraśyati naṣṭaceṣṭaḥ ,
bhītaṁ prapannaṁ pradadāti yo vai; na tasya havyaṁ pratigṛhṇanti devāḥ.
bhītaṁ prapannaṁ pradadāti yo vai; na tasya havyaṁ pratigṛhṇanti devāḥ.
20.
mogham annam vindati ca api acetāḥ

svargāt lokāt bhraśyati naṣṭaceṣṭaḥ
bhītam prapannam pradadāti yaḥ vai
na tasya havyam pratigṛhṇanti devāḥ
20.
Indeed, whoever hands over a frightened, surrendered person (to an enemy), that thoughtless one obtains food in vain, and with his efforts destroyed, he falls from the heavenly worlds. The gods do not accept his offering (havya).
21. pramīyate cāsya prajā hyakāle; sadā vivāsaṁ pitaro'sya kurvate ,
bhītaṁ prapannaṁ pradadāti śatrave; sendrā devāḥ praharantyasya vajram.
bhītaṁ prapannaṁ pradadāti śatrave; sendrā devāḥ praharantyasya vajram.
21.
pramīyate ca asya prajā hi akāle sadā

sa-indrāḥ devāḥ praharanti asya vajram
vivāsam pitaraḥ asya kurvate bhītam
prapannam pradadāti śatrave
sa-indrāḥ devāḥ praharanti asya vajram
21.
For one who hands over a frightened, surrendered person to an enemy, his progeny perishes prematurely. His ancestors always cause him to be without a dwelling, and the gods, led by Indra, strike him with the thunderbolt.

indrāṇīm viśrutām loke śakrasya mahiṣīm priyām
indrāṇīm viśrutām loke śakrasya mahiṣīm priyām
22.
Knowing this truth, I will certainly not give away this Śacī, who is Indrāṇī, well-known in the world, and the beloved chief queen of Śakra (Indra).

23.
O best of gods, whatever is beneficial for her and also beneficial for me, let that be done. I will certainly not give Sachi.

Brihaspati said: 'Let the noble goddess (Sachi) ask Nahusha for some time. This will indeed be beneficial for Indrani and likewise for us.'

Time (kāla) itself creates many impediments, and time will indeed pass. Nahusha is also arrogant and powerful due to the boon (vara) he received.

28.
Then all the gods, led by Agni, undistractedly spoke words to Indrāṇī, desiring the welfare of the worlds.

By you, this entire universe, both stationary and moving, has been sustained. You are a devoted wife (eka-patnī) and truthful; therefore, go to Nahuṣa.

30.
The king (Nahuṣa) who desires you will quickly be destroyed, and O goddess, Indra (śakra) will regain the sovereignty of the gods.

Having made this firm decision, Indrāṇī, feeling bashful, approached Nahuṣa, who was of terrible appearance, for the success of her mission.

samahṛṣyata duṣṭātmā kāmopahatacetanaḥ.
32.

32.
And Nahuṣa, the evil-minded (duṣṭātmā) one whose consciousness was afflicted by desire, rejoiced greatly upon seeing her, endowed as she was with youth and beauty.
