मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
ग्रहाः सोपग्रहाश्चैव ऋषयो मातरस्तथा ।
हुताशनमुखाश्चापि दीप्ताः पारिषदां गणाः ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
grahāḥ sopagrahāścaiva ṛṣayo mātarastathā ,
hutāśanamukhāścāpi dīptāḥ pāriṣadāṁ gaṇāḥ.

1. Markandeya said: The planets along with their subordinate planets, and indeed the sages, and also the mothers, and the radiant hosts of attendants headed by Hutashana (Agni).
एते चान्ये च बहवो घोरास्त्रिदिववासिनः ।
परिवार्य महासेनं स्थिता मातृगणैः सह ॥२॥
2. ete cānye ca bahavo ghorāstridivavāsinaḥ ,
parivārya mahāsenaṁ sthitā mātṛgaṇaiḥ saha.
2. ete ca anye ca bahavaḥ ghorāḥ tridivavāsinaḥ
parivārya mahāsenaṃ sthitāḥ mātṛgaṇaiḥ saha
2. These, and many other formidable celestial beings, stood surrounding Mahasena, accompanied by the hosts of divine mothers.
संदिग्धं विजयं दृष्ट्वा विजयेप्सुः सुरेश्वरः ।
आरुह्यैरावतस्कन्धं प्रययौ दैवतैः सह ।
विजिघांसुर्महासेनमिन्द्रस्तूर्णतरं ययौ ॥३॥
3. saṁdigdhaṁ vijayaṁ dṛṣṭvā vijayepsuḥ sureśvaraḥ ,
āruhyairāvataskandhaṁ prayayau daivataiḥ saha ,
vijighāṁsurmahāsenamindrastūrṇataraṁ yayau.
3. saṃdigdhaṃ vijayaṃ dṛṣṭvā vijaya-īpsuḥ
sura-īśvaraḥ āruhya airāvata-skandhaṃ
prayayau daivataiḥ saha vijighāṃsuḥ
mahāsenaṃ indraḥ tūrṇataram yayau
3. Seeing the victory as uncertain, Indra, the lord of the gods and desirous of triumph, mounted the shoulder of Airavata and set forth with the deities. Wishing to vanquish Mahasena, Indra proceeded with great haste.
उग्रं तच्च महावेगं देवानीकं महाप्रभम् ।
विचित्रध्वजसंनाहं नानावाहनकार्मुकम् ।
प्रवराम्बरसंवीतं श्रिया जुष्टमलंकृतम् ॥४॥
4. ugraṁ tacca mahāvegaṁ devānīkaṁ mahāprabham ,
vicitradhvajasaṁnāhaṁ nānāvāhanakārmukam ,
pravarāmbarasaṁvītaṁ śriyā juṣṭamalaṁkṛtam.
4. ugram tat ca mahāvegam devānīkam
mahāprabham vicitradhvajasannāham
nānāvāhanakārmukam pravarāmbarasaṃvītam
śriyā juṣṭam alaṅkṛtam
4. That fierce and immensely swift divine army (devānīkam), which was greatly splendid, adorned with various banners and armaments, and equipped with diverse vehicles and bows, was also covered in excellent garments and endowed with great splendor.
विजिघांसुं तदायान्तं कुमारः शक्रमभ्ययात् ।
विनदन्पथि शक्रस्तु द्रुतं याति महाबलः ।
संहर्षयन्देवसेनां जिघांसुः पावकात्मजम् ॥५॥
5. vijighāṁsuṁ tadāyāntaṁ kumāraḥ śakramabhyayāt ,
vinadanpathi śakrastu drutaṁ yāti mahābalaḥ ,
saṁharṣayandevasenāṁ jighāṁsuḥ pāvakātmajam.
5. vijighāṃsum tadā āyāntam kumāraḥ
śakram abhyayāt vinadan pathi śakraḥ
tu drutam yāti mahābalaḥ saṃharṣayan
devasenām jighāṃsuḥ pāvakātmajam
5. Then, as Shakra (Indra) approached, intent on killing, Kumara (Kartikeya) advanced towards him. Indeed, Shakra, the mighty one, roaring along the path, moved swiftly, encouraging the army of the gods while intending to slay the son of Agni (pāvakātmajam, Kartikeya).
संपूज्यमानस्त्रिदशैस्तथैव परमर्षिभिः ।
समीपमुपसंप्राप्तः कार्त्तिकेयस्य वासवः ॥६॥
6. saṁpūjyamānastridaśaistathaiva paramarṣibhiḥ ,
samīpamupasaṁprāptaḥ kārttikeyasya vāsavaḥ.
6. sampūjyamānaḥ tridaśaiḥ tathā eva paramarṣibhiḥ
samīpam upasampraptaḥ kārttikeyasya vāsavaḥ
6. Vasava (Indra), being greatly honored by the gods (tridaśa) as well as by the great sages, arrived near Kartikeya.
सिंहनादं ततश्चक्रे देवेशः सहितः सुरैः ।
गुहोऽपि शब्दं तं श्रुत्वा व्यनदत्सागरो यथा ॥७॥
7. siṁhanādaṁ tataścakre deveśaḥ sahitaḥ suraiḥ ,
guho'pi śabdaṁ taṁ śrutvā vyanadatsāgaro yathā.
7. siṃhanādam tataḥ cakre deveśaḥ sahitaḥ suraiḥ
guhaḥ api śabdam tam śrutvā vyanadat sāgaraḥ yathā
7. Then, the lord of gods (deveśa), accompanied by the other gods, let out a lion's roar. Guha (Kartikeya) also, having heard that sound, roared back like the ocean.
तस्य शब्देन महता समुद्धूतोदधिप्रभम् ।
बभ्राम तत्र तत्रैव देवसैन्यमचेतनम् ॥८॥
8. tasya śabdena mahatā samuddhūtodadhiprabham ,
babhrāma tatra tatraiva devasainyamacetanam.

babhrāma tatra tatra eva devasainyam acetanam
8. Due to his great roar, the army of the gods, stunned and unconscious, wandered aimlessly here and there, resembling the agitated expanse of an ocean.
जिघांसूनुपसंप्राप्तान्देवान्दृष्ट्वा स पावकिः ।
विससर्ज मुखात्क्रुद्धः प्रवृद्धाः पावकार्चिषः ।
ता देवसैन्यान्यदहन्वेष्टमानानि भूतले ॥९॥
9. jighāṁsūnupasaṁprāptāndevāndṛṣṭvā sa pāvakiḥ ,
visasarja mukhātkruddhaḥ pravṛddhāḥ pāvakārciṣaḥ ,
tā devasainyānyadahanveṣṭamānāni bhūtale.
9. jighāṁsūn upasaṁprāptān devān dṛṣṭvā
sa pāvakiḥ visasarja mukhāt kruddhaḥ
pravṛddhāḥ pāvakārcṣiṣaḥ tā
devasainyāni adahant veṣṭamānāni bhūtale
9. Seeing the gods who had come with the intention of killing, that enraged son of Agni (pāvakiḥ) released from his mouth greatly intensified flames (pāvakārcṣiṣaḥ). These flames then consumed those divine armies that were writhing on the ground.
ते प्रदीप्तशिरोदेहाः प्रदीप्तायुधवाहनाः ।
प्रच्युताः सहसा भान्ति चित्रास्तारागणा इव ॥१०॥
10. te pradīptaśirodehāḥ pradīptāyudhavāhanāḥ ,
pracyutāḥ sahasā bhānti citrāstārāgaṇā iva.
10. te pradīptaśirodehāḥ pradīptāyudhavāhanāḥ
pracyutāḥ sahasā bhānti citrāḥ tārāgaṇāḥ iva
10. With their heads and bodies ablaze, and their weapons and vehicles ignited, those gods, having suddenly fallen, shone brilliantly like astonishing constellations.
दह्यमानाः प्रपन्नास्ते शरणं पावकात्मजम् ।
देवा वज्रधरं त्यक्त्वा ततः शान्तिमुपागताः ॥११॥
11. dahyamānāḥ prapannāste śaraṇaṁ pāvakātmajam ,
devā vajradharaṁ tyaktvā tataḥ śāntimupāgatāḥ.
11. dahyamānāḥ prapannāḥ te śaraṇam pāvakātmajam
devāḥ vajradharam tyaktvā tataḥ śāntim upāgatāḥ
11. While burning, those gods abandoned the thunderbolt-bearer (vajradharam) and took refuge (śaraṇam) in the son of Agni (pāvakātmajam); consequently, they attained peace.
त्यक्तो देवैस्ततः स्कन्दे वज्रं शक्रोऽभ्यवासृजत् ।
तद्विसृष्टं जघानाशु पार्श्वं स्कन्दस्य दक्षिणम् ।
बिभेद च महाराज पार्श्वं तस्य महात्मनः ॥१२॥
12. tyakto devaistataḥ skande vajraṁ śakro'bhyavāsṛjat ,
tadvisṛṣṭaṁ jaghānāśu pārśvaṁ skandasya dakṣiṇam ,
bibheda ca mahārāja pārśvaṁ tasya mahātmanaḥ.
12. tyaktaḥ devaiḥ tataḥ skande vajram
śakraḥ abhyavāsṛjat tatvisṛṣṭam jaghāna
āśu pārśvam skandasya dakṣiṇam bibheda
ca mahārāja pārśvam tasya mahātmanaḥ
12. Then, when Skanda was abandoned by the gods, Indra (Śakra) hurled his thunderbolt (vajra). That missile quickly struck Skanda's right side and, O great king, it pierced the side of that great-souled one (mahātman).
वज्रप्रहारात्स्कन्दस्य संजातः पुरुषोऽपरः ।
युवा काञ्चनसंनाहः शक्तिधृग्दिव्यकुण्डलः ।
यद्वज्रविशनाज्जातो विशाखस्तेन सोऽभवत् ॥१३॥
13. vajraprahārātskandasya saṁjātaḥ puruṣo'paraḥ ,
yuvā kāñcanasaṁnāhaḥ śaktidhṛgdivyakuṇḍalaḥ ,
yadvajraviśanājjāto viśākhastena so'bhavat.
13. vajraprahārāt skandasya saṃjātaḥ
puruṣaḥ aparaḥ yuvā kāñcanasaṃnāhaḥ
śaktidhṛk divyakuṇḍalaḥ yat vajraviśanāt
jātaḥ viśākhaḥ tena saḥ abhavat
13. From the impact of the thunderbolt (vajra) on Skanda, another person (puruṣa) was born. He was a youth, clad in golden armor, holding a spear (śakti), and adorned with divine earrings. Because he was born from the splitting by the thunderbolt (vajra), he became known as Viśākha.
तं जातमपरं दृष्ट्वा कालानलसमद्युतिम् ।
भयादिन्द्रस्ततः स्कन्दं प्राञ्जलिः शरणं गतः ॥१४॥
14. taṁ jātamaparaṁ dṛṣṭvā kālānalasamadyutim ,
bhayādindrastataḥ skandaṁ prāñjaliḥ śaraṇaṁ gataḥ.
14. tam jātam aparam dṛṣṭvā kālānalasamadyutim bhayāt
indraḥ tataḥ skandam prāñjaliḥ śaraṇam gataḥ
14. Seeing that other one born, shining like the fire of destruction (kālānala), Indra, out of fear, then approached Skanda for refuge (śaraṇa) with folded hands.
तस्याभयं ददौ स्कन्दः सहसैन्यस्य सत्तम ।
ततः प्रहृष्टास्त्रिदशा वादित्राण्यभ्यवादयन् ॥१५॥
15. tasyābhayaṁ dadau skandaḥ sahasainyasya sattama ,
tataḥ prahṛṣṭāstridaśā vāditrāṇyabhyavādayan.
15. tasya abhayam dadau skandaḥ sahasainyasya sattama
tataḥ prahṛṣṭāḥ tridaśāḥ vāditrāṇi abhyavādayan
15. Skanda, O best of beings, granted fearlessness (abhaya) to Indra, along with his army. Then, the greatly delighted thirty gods (tridaśa) played their musical instruments.
