Saṃjaya said: O King, then a dreadful battle commenced, terrifying for the Kurus, along with the Sṛñjayas, a conflict resembling that between gods and asuras.
नरा रथा गजौघाश्च सादिनश्च सहस्रशः ।
वाजिनश्च पराक्रान्ताः समाजग्मुः परस्परम् ॥२॥

Thousands of men, chariots, throngs of elephants, horsemen, and valorous horses encountered each other.
नागानां भीमरूपाणां द्रवतां निस्वनो महान् ।
अश्रूयत यथा काले जलदानां नभस्तले ॥३॥

3. nāgānāṁ bhīmarūpāṇāṁ dravatāṁ nisvano mahān ,

A great roar from the dreadful-looking, stampeding elephants was heard, just as the sound of clouds is heard in the sky during the (rainy) season.
नागैरभ्याहताः केचित्सरथा रथिनोऽपतन् ।
व्यद्रवन्त रणे वीरा द्राव्यमाणा मदोत्कटैः ॥४॥

Some charioteers, along with their chariots, were struck down by the elephants and fell. Other heroes, being driven away by the infuriated (madotkaṭa) elephants, fled from the battle.
हयौघान्पादरक्षांश्च रथिनस्तत्र शिक्षिताः ।
शरैः संप्रेषयामासुः परलोकाय भारत ॥५॥

5. hayaughānpādarakṣāṁśca rathinastatra śikṣitāḥ ,

O Bhārata, the skilled charioteers there dispatched many horses and foot soldiers to the other world (paraloka) with their arrows.
सादिनः शिक्षिता राजन्परिवार्य महारथान् ।
विचरन्तो रणेऽभ्यघ्नन्प्रासशक्त्यृष्टिभिस्तथा ॥६॥

6. sādinaḥ śikṣitā rājanparivārya mahārathān ,
vicaranto raṇe'bhyaghnanprāsaśaktyṛṣṭibhistathā.

O King, the trained horsemen, surrounding the great charioteers (mahāratha) and moving about in the battle, thus struck them with spears (prāsa), lances (śakti), and javelins (ṛṣṭi).
धन्विनः पुरुषाः केचित्संनिवार्य महारथान् ।
एकं बहव आसाद्य प्रेषयेयुर्यमक्षयम् ॥७॥

7. dhanvinaḥ puruṣāḥ kecitsaṁnivārya mahārathān ,

Some archers (dhanvin), having checked the great charioteers (mahāratha), would then, many of them together, approach one (of them) and dispatch him to the abode of Yama (yamakṣaya).
नागं रथवरांश्चान्ये परिवार्य महारथाः ।
सोत्तरायुधिनं जघ्नुर्द्रवमाणा महारवम् ॥८॥

8. nāgaṁ rathavarāṁścānye parivārya mahārathāḥ ,

Other great charioteers, rushing forth, surrounded an elephant and excellent charioteers, and then struck down a warrior possessing superior weapons, creating a great roar.
तथा च रथिनं क्रुद्धं विकिरन्तं शरान्बहून् ।
नागा जघ्नुर्महाराज परिवार्य समन्ततः ॥९॥

9. tathā ca rathinaṁ kruddhaṁ vikirantaṁ śarānbahūn ,

And similarly, O great king, the elephants, having surrounded him from all sides, struck down the enraged charioteer who was scattering many arrows.
नागो नागमभिद्रुत्य रथी च रथिनं रणे ।
शक्तितोमरनाराचैर्निजघ्नुस्तत्र तत्र ह ॥१०॥

10. nāgo nāgamabhidrutya rathī ca rathinaṁ raṇe ,

In that battle, an elephant, having rushed towards another elephant, and a charioteer, towards another charioteer, indeed struck them down in various places with spears (śakti), javelins, and iron arrows.
पादातानवमृद्नन्तो रथवारणवाजिनः ।
रणमध्ये व्यदृश्यन्त कुर्वन्तो महदाकुलम् ॥११॥

Chariots, elephants, and horses, trampling the foot soldiers, were seen in the midst of battle, causing great confusion.
हयाश्च पर्यधावन्त चामरैरुपशोभिताः ।
हंसा हिमवतः प्रस्थे पिबन्त इव मेदिनीम् ॥१२॥

12. hayāśca paryadhāvanta cāmarairupaśobhitāḥ ,
haṁsā himavataḥ prasthe pibanta iva medinīm.

The horses, adorned with yak-tail whisks, galloped, as if swans were drinking the water from the earth on the slope of the Himalayas.
तेषां तु वाजिनां भूमिः खुरैश्चित्रा विशां पते ।
अशोभत यथा नारी करजक्षतविक्षता ॥१३॥

13. teṣāṁ tu vājināṁ bhūmiḥ khuraiścitrā viśāṁ pate ,

But, O lord of the people, the earth, made variegated by the hooves of those horses, looked beautiful like a woman whose body is marked with fingernail scratches.
वाजिनां खुरशब्देन रथनेमिस्वनेन च ।
पत्तीनां चापि शब्देन नागानां बृंहितेन च ॥१४॥

14. vājināṁ khuraśabdena rathanemisvanena ca ,
pattīnāṁ cāpi śabdena nāgānāṁ bṛṁhitena ca.

By the sound of the horses' hooves, by the rattling of chariot wheels, and also by the noise of the infantry, and by the trumpeting of the elephants,
वादित्राणां च घोषेण शङ्खानां निस्वनेन च ।
अभवन्नादिता भूमिर्निर्घातैरिव भारत ॥१५॥

15. vāditrāṇāṁ ca ghoṣeṇa śaṅkhānāṁ nisvanena ca ,
abhavannāditā bhūmirnirghātairiva bhārata.

15.
And by the sound of the musical instruments, and by the blast of conch shells, the earth became filled with noise, O Bhārata, as if by thunderclaps.
धनुषां कूजमानानां निस्त्रिंशानां च दीप्यताम् ।
कवचानां प्रभाभिश्च न प्राज्ञायत किंचन ॥१६॥

16. dhanuṣāṁ kūjamānānāṁ nistriṁśānāṁ ca dīpyatām ,
kavacānāṁ prabhābhiśca na prājñāyata kiṁcana.

Due to the twanging of the bows, the shining of the swords, and the gleams from the armors, nothing could be clearly discerned.
बहवो बाहवश्छिन्ना नागराजकरोपमाः ।
उद्वेष्टन्ते विवेष्टन्ते वेगं कुर्वन्ति दारुणम् ॥१७॥

17. bahavo bāhavaśchinnā nāgarājakaropamāḥ ,
udveṣṭante viveṣṭante vegaṁ kurvanti dāruṇam.

Many severed arms, resembling the trunks of great elephants, twist and writhe, creating a terrible momentum.
शिरसां च महाराज पततां वसुधातले ।
च्युतानामिव तालेभ्यः फलानां श्रूयते स्वनः ॥१८॥

18. śirasāṁ ca mahārāja patatāṁ vasudhātale ,
cyutānāmiva tālebhyaḥ phalānāṁ śrūyate svanaḥ.

And, O great king, the sound of heads falling upon the earth is heard, just like the thud of fruits that have dropped from palm trees.
शिरोभिः पतितैर्भाति रुधिरार्द्रैर्वसुंधरा ।
तपनीयनिभैः काले नलिनैरिव भारत ॥१९॥

19. śirobhiḥ patitairbhāti rudhirārdrairvasuṁdharā ,
tapanīyanibhaiḥ kāle nalinairiva bhārata.

19.
O Bhārata, the earth appears radiant with fallen heads, wet with blood, resembling golden lotuses at the proper season.
उद्वृत्तनयनैस्तैस्तु गतसत्त्वैः सुविक्षतैः ।
व्यभ्राजत महाराज पुण्डरीकैरिवावृता ॥२०॥

20. udvṛttanayanaistaistu gatasattvaiḥ suvikṣataiḥ ,
vyabhrājata mahārāja puṇḍarīkairivāvṛtā.

udvṛttanayanaiḥ taiḥ tu gatasattvaiḥ suvikṣataiḥ
vyabhrājata mahārāja puṇḍarīkaiḥ iva āvṛtā

mahārāja tu taiḥ udvṛttanayanaiḥ gatasattvaiḥ
suvikṣataiḥ puṇḍarīkaiḥ iva āvṛtā vyabhrājata

20.
O great king, the battlefield appeared as if covered by white lotuses, though it was actually strewn with those (corpses) whose eyes were rolled up, who had lost their vitality, and were severely wounded.
बाहुभिश्चन्दनादिग्धैः सकेयूरैर्महाधनैः ।
पतितैर्भाति राजेन्द्र मही शक्रध्वजैरिव ॥२१॥

21. bāhubhiścandanādigdhaiḥ sakeyūrairmahādhanaiḥ ,
patitairbhāti rājendra mahī śakradhvajairiva.

rājendra! mahī candanādigdhaiḥ sakeyūraiḥ

mahādhanaiḥ patitaiḥ bāhubhiḥ śakradhvajaiḥ iva bhāti
21.
O king of kings, the earth shines as if covered by the fallen banners of Indra, (but it is actually covered) by fallen arms, smeared with sandalwood paste, adorned with expensive armlets.
ऊरुभिश्च नरेन्द्राणां विनिकृत्तैर्महाहवे ।
हस्तिहस्तोपमैरन्यैः संवृतं तद्रणाङ्गणम् ॥२२॥

22. ūrubhiśca narendrāṇāṁ vinikṛttairmahāhave ,
hastihastopamairanyaiḥ saṁvṛtaṁ tadraṇāṅgaṇam.

22.

And in that great battle, that battlefield was covered by the severed thighs of kings, and by other (limbs) resembling elephant trunks.

That 'army-forest' (the battlefield), filled with hundreds of headless trunks and adorned with (fallen) parasols and whisks, shone just like a forest covered with flowers.
तत्र योधा महाराज विचरन्तो ह्यभीतवत् ।

O great king, the warriors, moving fearlessly, are seen with their limbs smeared with blood, resembling blooming palāśa (kiṃśuka) trees.
मातङ्गाश्चाप्यदृश्यन्त शरतोमरपीडिताः ।
पतन्तस्तत्र तत्रैव छिन्नाभ्रसदृशा रणे ॥२५॥

And indeed, elephants, afflicted by arrows and spears, were seen falling here and there in the battle, resembling scattered clouds.

O great king, the elephant division, being slaughtered by the great souls (mahā-ātman), was scattered in all directions, just like clouds are driven by the wind.

Those elephants, which resembled clouds, fell everywhere on the earth. They looked like mountains shattered by a thunderbolt at the time of the cosmic dissolution (yuga-saṃkṣaya).

Piles of horses, along with their fallen riders, were visible on the battlefield, appearing like mountains scattered here and there on the ground.

A river, indeed, formed on the battlefield, carrying souls to the other world, with blood as its water, chariots as its whirlpools, and standards as its trees and bones as its pebbles.

(The river) had arms for alligators, bows for its currents, elephants for its mountains, horses for its rocks, fat and marrow for its mud, parasols for its swans, and maces for its rafts.

(The river was) covered with armor and turbans, adorned with beautiful banner-trees, frequented by rows of (chariot) wheels, and surrounded by triple-braided hair and staffs.

A terrifying river (of battle) unfolded, bringing joy to heroes and increasing fear in cowards, crowded with Kurus and Sṛñjayas.

Those heroes, whose arms were like iron bars, crossed that exceedingly terrifying river [of battle] – which swept many towards the ancestral realm – by means of their mounts and conveyances.

O Lord of the people, while that dreadful battle was ongoing - a boundless conflict leading to the destruction of the four-limbed army, and resembling the ancient war between the gods and asuras...

O tormentor of foes, some cried out for their kinsmen here and there; and others, terrified by the wailing of their relatives, did not retreat.

And in that terrible battle, which was raging without any moral limits, Arjuna and Bhimasena bewildered their enemies.

That great army of yours, O lord of men, while being struck down, became utterly bewildered right there, as if a woman overcome by intoxication.

Having bewildered that army, Bhimasena and Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) then blew their conch shells and roared a lion's roar.

Upon hearing that great sound, Dhṛṣṭadyumna and Śikhaṇḍī, placing the King of dharma (dharmarāja) at the forefront, rushed towards the King of Madra.

O ruler of the people, there we witnessed a terrible spectacle: how the brave warriors, joined by Śalya, fought in separate divisions.

The two sons of Mādrī, swift and impetuous, skilled in warfare, and mad with battle-fury, advanced quickly, desiring to conquer your forces.

Then, O best of the Bhāratas, your army retreated, having been greatly repelled by the arrows of the Pāṇḍavas, who shone with victory.

But that army, while your sons watched it being slaughtered, O great king, scattered in all directions, driven back by the strong archers. A great lamentation arose from your warriors, O Bhārata.

"Stop! Stop!" such was the cry from the great warriors (mahātmanām) of the Kṣatriyas who were fleeing and yet, at that very moment, were mutually wishing for victory in battle. Even as your soldiers were running away, they were shattered by the Pāṇḍavas.
