वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततो वाग्युद्धमभवत्तुमुलं जनमेजय ।
यत्र दुःखान्वितो राजा धृतराष्ट्रोऽब्रवीदिदम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tato vāgyuddhamabhavattumulaṁ janamejaya ,
yatra duḥkhānvito rājā dhṛtarāṣṭro'bravīdidam.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: "Thereafter, O Janamejaya, a tumultuous word-battle ensued, during which King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, afflicted by sorrow, spoke these words."
धिगस्तु खलु मानुष्यं यस्य निष्ठेयमीदृशी ।
एकादशचमूभर्ता यत्र पुत्रो ममाभिभूः ॥२॥
2. dhigastu khalu mānuṣyaṁ yasya niṣṭheyamīdṛśī ,
ekādaśacamūbhartā yatra putro mamābhibhūḥ.
2. dhik astu khalu mānuṣyam yasya niṣṭhā iyam īdṛśī
ekādaśacamūbhartā yatra putraḥ mama abhibhūḥ
2. khalu mānuṣyam dhik astu,
yasya iyam īdṛśī niṣṭhā (asti).

2. Indeed, woe to the human condition (mānuṣyam), whose ultimate fate is such! Where my son, the commander of eleven armies, is now utterly defeated.
आज्ञाप्य सर्वान्नृपतीन्भुक्त्वा चेमां वसुंधराम् ।
गदामादाय वेगेन पदातिः प्रस्थितो रणम् ॥३॥
3. ājñāpya sarvānnṛpatīnbhuktvā cemāṁ vasuṁdharām ,
gadāmādāya vegena padātiḥ prasthito raṇam.

3. Having issued commands to all kings and ruled over this entire earth (vasundharā), he has now, swiftly taking up his mace, set out for battle on foot.
भूत्वा हि जगतो नाथो ह्यनाथ इव मे सुतः ।
गदामुद्यम्य यो याति किमन्यद्भागधेयतः ॥४॥
4. bhūtvā hi jagato nātho hyanātha iva me sutaḥ ,
gadāmudyamya yo yāti kimanyadbhāgadheyataḥ.

gadām udyamya yaḥ yāti kim anyat bhāgadheyataḥ

4. Though he has become the protector of the world, my son, like an orphan, goes forth wielding his mace. What else can this be but his destiny?
अहो दुःखं महत्प्राप्तं पुत्रेण मम संजय ।
एवमुक्त्वा स दुःखार्तो विरराम जनाधिपः ॥५॥
5. aho duḥkhaṁ mahatprāptaṁ putreṇa mama saṁjaya ,
evamuktvā sa duḥkhārto virarāma janādhipaḥ.

evam uktvā saḥ duḥkhārtaḥ virarāma janādhipaḥ
5. sañjaya,
aho mahat duḥkham mama putreṇa prāptam.

5. Oh, great suffering has come upon my son, Sañjaya. Having spoken thus, that king, overcome with grief, became silent.
संजय उवाच ।
स मेघनिनदो हर्षाद्विनदन्निव गोवृषः ।
आजुहाव ततः पार्थं युद्धाय युधि वीर्यवान् ॥६॥
6. saṁjaya uvāca ,
sa meghaninado harṣādvinadanniva govṛṣaḥ ,
ājuhāva tataḥ pārthaṁ yuddhāya yudhi vīryavān.
6. sañjayaḥ uvāca saḥ meghaninadaḥ harṣāt vinadan iva
govr̥ṣaḥ ājuhāva tataḥ pārtham yuddhāya yudhi vīryavān

6. Sañjaya said: Then, that powerful one, with a roar like thunder, like a bellowing bull, joyfully summoned Pārtha for battle in the fight.
भीममाह्वयमाने तु कुरुराजे महात्मनि ।
प्रादुरासन्सुघोराणि रूपाणि विविधान्युत ॥७॥
7. bhīmamāhvayamāne tu kururāje mahātmani ,
prādurāsansughorāṇi rūpāṇi vividhānyuta.

7. tu,

7. Indeed, while the great-souled Kuru king was summoning Bhīma, exceedingly terrifying and diverse forms appeared.
ववुर्वाताः सनिर्घाताः पांसुवर्षं पपात च ।
बभूवुश्च दिशः सर्वास्तिमिरेण समावृताः ॥८॥
8. vavurvātāḥ sanirghātāḥ pāṁsuvarṣaṁ papāta ca ,
babhūvuśca diśaḥ sarvāstimireṇa samāvṛtāḥ.
8. vavuḥ vātāḥ sanirghātāḥ pāṃsuvarṣam papāta ca
babhūvuḥ ca diśaḥ sarvāḥ timireṇa samāvṛtāḥ

8. Winds blew with thunderous crashes, and a rain of dust fell. All directions became enveloped in darkness.
महास्वनाः सनिर्घातास्तुमुला रोमहर्षणाः ।
पेतुस्तथोल्काः शतशः स्फोटयन्त्यो नभस्तलम् ॥९॥
9. mahāsvanāḥ sanirghātāstumulā romaharṣaṇāḥ ,
petustatholkāḥ śataśaḥ sphoṭayantyo nabhastalam.

9. Hundreds of meteors fell, emitting great, thunderous, tumultuous, hair-raising sounds, as they burst open the firmament.
राहुश्चाग्रसदादित्यमपर्वणि विशां पते ।
चकम्पे च महाकम्पं पृथिवी सवनद्रुमा ॥१०॥
10. rāhuścāgrasadādityamaparvaṇi viśāṁ pate ,
cakampe ca mahākampaṁ pṛthivī savanadrumā.
10. rāhuḥ ca agrasat ādityam aparvaṇi viśām pate
cakampē ca mahākampam pṛthivī savanadrumā
10. pate rāhuḥ aparvaṇi ādityam ca agrasat
pṛthivī savanadrumā ca mahākampam cakampē
10. O lord of the people, Rahu swallowed the sun on an unprescribed day (not an eclipse day). And the earth, along with its forests and trees, trembled intensely.
रूक्षाश्च वाताः प्रववुर्नीचैः शर्करवर्षिणः ।
गिरीणां शिखराण्येव न्यपतन्त महीतले ॥११॥
11. rūkṣāśca vātāḥ pravavurnīcaiḥ śarkaravarṣiṇaḥ ,
girīṇāṁ śikharāṇyeva nyapatanta mahītale.
11. rūkṣāḥ ca vātāḥ pravavuḥ nīcaiḥ śarkaravarṣiṇaḥ
girīṇām śikharāṇi eva nyapatanta mahītale

11. And harsh winds blew low, showering gravel. Even the peaks of the mountains fell down onto the ground.
मृगा बहुविधाकाराः संपतन्ति दिशो दश ।
दीप्ताः शिवाश्चाप्यनदन्घोररूपाः सुदारुणाः ॥१२॥
12. mṛgā bahuvidhākārāḥ saṁpatanti diśo daśa ,
dīptāḥ śivāścāpyanadanghorarūpāḥ sudāruṇāḥ.
12. mṛgāḥ bahuvidhākārāḥ saṃpatanti diśaḥ daśa
dīptāḥ śivāḥ ca api anadan ghorarūpāḥ sudāruṇāḥ
12. bahuvidhākārāḥ mṛgāḥ daśa diśaḥ saṃpatanti.
dīptāḥ ghorarūpāḥ sudāruṇāḥ śivāḥ ca api anadan.
12. Animals of many kinds rushed in all ten directions. Fierce and terribly formed jackals, exceedingly dreadful, also howled.
निर्घाताश्च महाघोरा बभूवू रोमहर्षणाः ।
दीप्तायां दिशि राजेन्द्र मृगाश्चाशुभवादिनः ॥१३॥
13. nirghātāśca mahāghorā babhūvū romaharṣaṇāḥ ,
dīptāyāṁ diśi rājendra mṛgāścāśubhavādinaḥ.
13. nirghātāḥ ca mahāghorāḥ babhūvu romaharṣaṇāḥ
dīptāyām diśi rājendra mṛgāḥ ca aśubhavādinaḥ
13. rājendra,
mahāghorāḥ romaharṣaṇāḥ nirghātāḥ ca babhūvu.
dīptāyām diśi mṛgāḥ ca aśubhavādinaḥ.
13. And very terrible, hair-raising thunderclaps occurred. O king of kings, in the blazing direction, animals also made inauspicious sounds.
उदपानगताश्चापो व्यवर्धन्त समन्ततः ।
अशरीरा महानादाः श्रूयन्ते स्म तदा नृप ॥१४॥
14. udapānagatāścāpo vyavardhanta samantataḥ ,
aśarīrā mahānādāḥ śrūyante sma tadā nṛpa.
14. udapānagatāḥ ca āpaḥ vyavardhanta samantataḥ
aśarīrāḥ mahānādāḥ śrūyante sma tadā nṛpa
14. nṛpa,
udapānagatāḥ āpaḥ ca samantataḥ vyavardhanta.
tadā aśarīrāḥ mahānādāḥ śrūyante sma.
14. And waters from wells swelled everywhere. Then, O king, great disembodied sounds were heard.
एवमादीनि दृष्ट्वाथ निमित्तानि वृकोदरः ।
उवाच भ्रातरं ज्येष्ठं धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥१५॥
15. evamādīni dṛṣṭvātha nimittāni vṛkodaraḥ ,
uvāca bhrātaraṁ jyeṣṭhaṁ dharmarājaṁ yudhiṣṭhiram.
15. evamādīni dṛṣṭvā atha nimittāni vṛkodaraḥ uvāca
bhrātaram jyeṣṭham dharmarājam yudhiṣṭhiram
15. atha,
vṛkodaraḥ evamādīni nimittāni dṛṣṭvā,
jyeṣṭham bhrātaram dharmarājam yudhiṣṭhiram uvāca.
15. Then, having seen omens like these, Vrikodara (Bhīma) spoke to his elder brother, Yudhishthira, the king of righteousness (dharma).
नैष शक्तो रणे जेतुं मन्दात्मा मां सुयोधनः ।
अद्य क्रोधं विमोक्ष्यामि निगूढं हृदये चिरम् ।
सुयोधने कौरवेन्द्रे खाण्डवे पावको यथा ॥१६॥
16. naiṣa śakto raṇe jetuṁ mandātmā māṁ suyodhanaḥ ,
adya krodhaṁ vimokṣyāmi nigūḍhaṁ hṛdaye ciram ,
suyodhane kauravendre khāṇḍave pāvako yathā.
16. na eṣaḥ śaktaḥ raṇe jetum mandātmā
mām suyodhanaḥ adya krodham vimokṣyāmi
nigūḍham hṛdaye ciram suyodhane
kauravendre khāṇḍave pābakaḥ yathā
16. mandātmā eṣaḥ suyodhanaḥ mām raṇe
jetum na śaktaḥ adya ciram hṛdaye
nigūḍham krodham vimokṣyāmi pābakaḥ
khāṇḍave yathā kauravendre suyodhane
16. This slow-witted Suyodhana is not capable of conquering me in battle. Today, I will unleash the anger (krodha) that has been long hidden in my heart, directing it at Suyodhana, the chief of the Kurus, just as fire (pāvaka) consumed the Khāṇḍava forest.
शल्यमद्योद्धरिष्यामि तव पाण्डव हृच्छयम् ।
निहत्य गदया पापमिमं कुरुकुलाधमम् ॥१७॥
17. śalyamadyoddhariṣyāmi tava pāṇḍava hṛcchayam ,
nihatya gadayā pāpamimaṁ kurukulādhamam.
17. śalyam adya uddhariṣyāmi tava pāṇḍava hṛcchayam
nihitya gadayā pāpam imam kurukulādhamam
17. adya pāṇḍava tava hṛcchayam śalyam uddhariṣyāmi
gadayā imam pāpam kurukulādhamam nihitya
17. Today, O Pāṇḍava, I will remove this thorn (śalya) that lies in your heart by killing this sinful and most wretched person of the Kuru lineage (kurukulādhamam) with my mace.
अद्य कीर्तिमयीं मालां प्रतिमोक्ष्याम्यहं त्वयि ।
हत्वेमं पापकर्माणं गदया रणमूर्धनि ॥१८॥
18. adya kīrtimayīṁ mālāṁ pratimokṣyāmyahaṁ tvayi ,
hatvemaṁ pāpakarmāṇaṁ gadayā raṇamūrdhani.
18. adya kīrtimayīm mālām pratimokṣyāmi aham tvayi
hatvā imam pāpakarmāṇam gadayā raṇamūrdhani
18. adya aham tvayi kīrtimayīm mālām pratimokṣyāmi
gadayā imam pāpakarmāṇam raṇamūrdhani hatvā
18. Today, I will bestow a garland of glory upon you by killing this sinful-doer (pāpakarmāṇam) with my mace on the battlefield.
अद्यास्य शतधा देहं भिनद्मि गदयानया ।
नायं प्रवेष्टा नगरं पुनर्वारणसाह्वयम् ॥१९॥
19. adyāsya śatadhā dehaṁ bhinadmi gadayānayā ,
nāyaṁ praveṣṭā nagaraṁ punarvāraṇasāhvayam.
19. adya asya śatadhā deham bhinadmi gadayā anayā
na ayam praveṣṭā nagaram punar vāraṇasāhvayam
19. adya anayā gadayā asya deham śatadhā bhinadmi
ayam vāraṇasāhvayam nagaram punaḥ na praveṣṭā
19. Today, with this mace, I will smash his body into a hundred pieces. He will not enter the city named Vāraṇasāhva (Hastinapura) again.
सर्पोत्सर्गस्य शयने विषदानस्य भोजने ।
प्रमाणकोट्यां पातस्य दाहस्य जतुवेश्मनि ॥२०॥
20. sarpotsargasya śayane viṣadānasya bhojane ,
pramāṇakoṭyāṁ pātasya dāhasya jatuveśmani.
20. sarpotsargasya śayane viṣadānasya bhojane
pramāṇakoṭyām pātasya dāhasya jatuveśmani
20. śayane sarpotsargasya bhojane viṣadānasya
pramāṇakoṭyām pātasya jatuveśmani dāhasya
20. (These are the accounts) of releasing snakes into my bed, of giving me poison in my food, of my being pushed from a great height, and of burning me in the lac-house.
सभायामवहासस्य सर्वस्वहरणस्य च ।
वर्षमज्ञातवासस्य वनवासस्य चानघ ॥२१॥
21. sabhāyāmavahāsasya sarvasvaharaṇasya ca ,
varṣamajñātavāsasya vanavāsasya cānagha.
21. sabhāyām avahāsasya sarvasvaharaṇasya ca
varṣam ajñātavāsasya vanavāsasya ca anagha
21. sabhāyām avahāsasya ca sarvasvaharaṇasya
varṣam ajñātavāsasya ca vanavāsasya anagha
21. (Also, the humiliation) of ridicule in the assembly, and of the seizure of all my possessions. (There was also) a year of living in disguise, and the long period of dwelling in the forest, O sinless one.
अद्यान्तमेषां दुःखानां गन्ता भरतसत्तम ।
एकाह्ना विनिहत्येमं भविष्याम्यात्मनोऽनृणः ॥२२॥
22. adyāntameṣāṁ duḥkhānāṁ gantā bharatasattama ,
ekāhnā vinihatyemaṁ bhaviṣyāmyātmano'nṛṇaḥ.
22. adya antam eṣām duḥkhānām gantā bharatasattama
ekāhnā vinihatya imam bhaviṣyāmi ātmanaḥ anṛṇaḥ
22. adya eṣām duḥkhānām antam gantā,
bharatasattama.
ekāhnā imam vinihatya,
ātmanaḥ anṛṇaḥ bhaviṣyāmi
22. Today will be the end of these sorrows (duḥkha), O best among the Bhāratas. Within a single day, by destroying this one, I shall become free from my obligation to my own self (ātman).
अद्यायुर्धार्तराष्ट्रस्य दुर्मतेरकृतात्मनः ।
समाप्तं भरतश्रेष्ठ मातापित्रोश्च दर्शनम् ॥२३॥
23. adyāyurdhārtarāṣṭrasya durmaterakṛtātmanaḥ ,
samāptaṁ bharataśreṣṭha mātāpitrośca darśanam.
23. adya āyuḥ dhārtarāṣṭrasya durmateḥ akṛtātmanaḥ
samāptam bharataśreṣṭha mātāpitroḥ ca darśanam
23. bharataśreṣṭha,
adya durmateḥ akṛtātmanaḥ dhārtarāṣṭrasya āyuḥ samāptam,
ca mātāpitroḥ darśanam
23. O best among the Bhāratas, today the life of the evil-minded, uncultivated son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra is finished, as is his parents' ability to see him.
अद्यायं कुरुराजस्य शंतनोः कुलपांसनः ।
प्राणाञ्श्रियं च राज्यं च त्यक्त्वा शेष्यति भूतले ॥२४॥
24. adyāyaṁ kururājasya śaṁtanoḥ kulapāṁsanaḥ ,
prāṇāñśriyaṁ ca rājyaṁ ca tyaktvā śeṣyati bhūtale.
24. adya ayam kururājasya śaṃtanoḥ kulapāṃsanaḥ prāṇān
śriyam ca rājyam ca tyaktvā śeṣyati bhūtale
24. ayam kulapāṃsanaḥ kururājasya śaṃtanoḥ adya prāṇān
śriyam ca rājyam ca tyaktvā bhūtale śeṣyati
24. Today, this disgrace of Śantanu's lineage, the king of the Kurus, will abandon his life, glory, and kingdom and lie dead on the ground.
राजा च धृतराष्ट्रोऽद्य श्रुत्वा पुत्रं मया हतम् ।
स्मरिष्यत्यशुभं कर्म यत्तच्छकुनिबुद्धिजम् ॥२५॥
25. rājā ca dhṛtarāṣṭro'dya śrutvā putraṁ mayā hatam ,
smariṣyatyaśubhaṁ karma yattacchakunibuddhijam.
25. rājā ca dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ adya śrutvā putram mayā hatam
smariṣyati aśubham karma yat tat śakunibuddhijam
25. ca rājā dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ adya mayā putram hatam śrutvā
yat tat śakunibuddhijam aśubham karma smariṣyati
25. And King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, today, having heard that his son was killed by me, will remember that inauspicious action (karma) which originated from Śakuni's advice.
इत्युक्त्वा राजशार्दूल गदामादाय वीर्यवान् ।
अवातिष्ठत युद्धाय शक्रो वृत्रमिवाह्वयन् ॥२६॥
26. ityuktvā rājaśārdūla gadāmādāya vīryavān ,
avātiṣṭhata yuddhāya śakro vṛtramivāhvayan.
26. iti uktvā rājaśārdūla gadām ādāya vīryavān
avātiṣṭhata yuddhāya śakraḥ vṛtram iva āhvayan
26. iti uktvā rājaśārdūla vīryavān gadām ādāya
śakraḥ vṛtram iva āhvayan yuddhāya avātiṣṭhata
26. Having spoken thus, O tiger among kings, the mighty Bhīma took up his mace and stood ready for battle, just as Indra challenged Vṛtra.
तमुद्यतगदं दृष्ट्वा कैलासमिव शृङ्गिणम् ।
भीमसेनः पुनः क्रुद्धो दुर्योधनमुवाच ह ॥२७॥
27. tamudyatagadaṁ dṛṣṭvā kailāsamiva śṛṅgiṇam ,
bhīmasenaḥ punaḥ kruddho duryodhanamuvāca ha.
27. tam udyatagadam dṛṣṭvā kailāsam iva śṛṅgiṇam
bhīmasenaḥ punaḥ kruddhaḥ duryodhanam uvāca ha
27. bhīmasenaḥ punaḥ kruddhaḥ udyatagadam śṛṅgiṇam
kailāsam iva tam dṛṣṭvā duryodhanam ha uvāca
27. Seeing him (Duryodhana) with his mace raised, like a peaked Mount Kailāsa, Bhīmasena, once again enraged, spoke to Duryodhana.
राज्ञश्च धृतराष्ट्रस्य तथा त्वमपि चात्मनः ।
स्मर तद्दुष्कृतं कर्म यद्वृत्तं वारणावते ॥२८॥
28. rājñaśca dhṛtarāṣṭrasya tathā tvamapi cātmanaḥ ,
smara tadduṣkṛtaṁ karma yadvṛttaṁ vāraṇāvate.
28. rājñaḥ ca dhṛtarāṣṭrasya tathā tvam api ca ātmanaḥ
| smara tat duṣkṛtam karma yat vṛttam vāraṇāvate
28. tvam ca dhṛtarāṣṭrasya rājñaḥ ca ātmanaḥ api tathā
yat vāraṇāvate vṛttam tat duṣkṛtam karma smara
28. Remember that evil deed (karma), both of King Dhṛtarāṣṭra and of yourself, which occurred in Vāraṇāvata.
द्रौपदी च परिक्लिष्टा सभायां यद्रजस्वला ।
द्यूते च वञ्चितो राजा यत्त्वया सौबलेन च ॥२९॥
29. draupadī ca parikliṣṭā sabhāyāṁ yadrajasvalā ,
dyūte ca vañcito rājā yattvayā saubalena ca.
29. draupadī ca parikliṣṭā sabhāyām yat rajasvalā
| dyūte ca vañcitaḥ rājā yat tvayā saubalena ca
29. ca yat rajasvalā draupadī sabhāyām parikliṣṭā
ca yat tvayā ca saubalena rājā dyūte vañcitaḥ
29. And remember that Draupadī was tormented in the assembly while she was menstruating, and that the king (Yudhiṣṭhira) was cheated in the dice game by you and Saubala (Śakuni).
वने दुःखं च यत्प्राप्तमस्माभिस्त्वत्कृतं महत् ।
विराटनगरे चैव योन्यन्तरगतैरिव ।
तत्सर्वं यातयाम्यद्य दिष्ट्या दृष्टोऽसि दुर्मते ॥३०॥
30. vane duḥkhaṁ ca yatprāptamasmābhistvatkṛtaṁ mahat ,
virāṭanagare caiva yonyantaragatairiva ,
tatsarvaṁ yātayāmyadya diṣṭyā dṛṣṭo'si durmate.
30. vane duḥkham ca yat prāptam asmābhiḥ
tvatkṛtam mahat | virāṭanagare ca eva
yonyantaragataiḥ iva | tat sarvam
yātayāmi adya diṣṭyā dṛṣṭaḥ asi durmate
30. ca yat tvatkṛtam mahat duḥkham asmābhiḥ
vane prāptam ca eva virāṭanagare
iva yonyantaragataiḥ tat sarvam adya
yātayāmi durmate diṣṭyā asi dṛṣṭaḥ
30. And the great suffering we endured in the forest, caused by you, and also in the city of Virāṭa, where we lived as if reborn into other forms - all that I now bring to an end. Fortunately, you are now seen, O evil-minded one!
त्वत्कृतेऽसौ हतः शेते शरतल्पे प्रतापवान् ।
गाङ्गेयो रथिनां श्रेष्ठो निहतो याज्ञसेनिना ॥३१॥
31. tvatkṛte'sau hataḥ śete śaratalpe pratāpavān ,
gāṅgeyo rathināṁ śreṣṭho nihato yājñaseninā.
31. tvatkṛte asau hataḥ śete śaratalpe pratāpavān |
gāṅgeyaḥ rathinām śreṣṭhaḥ nihataḥ yājñaseninā
31. tvatkṛte asau pratāpavān gāṅgeyaḥ rathinām
śreṣṭhaḥ yājñaseninā nihataḥ śaratalpe hataḥ śete
31. Because of you, that mighty Gaṅgeya (Bhīṣma), the foremost of charioteers, lies dead on a bed of arrows, having been killed by Yājñasenī (Dhṛṣṭadyumna).
हतो द्रोणश्च कर्णश्च तथा शल्यः प्रतापवान् ।
वैराग्नेरादिकर्ता च शकुनिः सौबलो हतः ॥३२॥
32. hato droṇaśca karṇaśca tathā śalyaḥ pratāpavān ,
vairāgnerādikartā ca śakuniḥ saubalo hataḥ.
32. hataḥ droṇaḥ ca karṇaḥ ca tathā śalyaḥ pratāpavān
vaira-agneḥ ādi-kartā ca śakuniḥ saubalaḥ hataḥ
32. droṇaḥ ca karṇaḥ ca tathā pratāpavān śalyaḥ hataḥ
ca vaira-agneḥ ādi-kartā saubalaḥ śakuniḥ ca hataḥ
32. Droṇa has been killed, and Karṇa, and also the mighty Śalya. And Śakuni, son of Subala, the instigator of the fire of enmity, has also been killed.
प्रातिकामी तथा पापो द्रौपद्याः क्लेशकृद्धतः ।
भ्रातरस्ते हताः सर्वे शूरा विक्रान्तयोधिनः ॥३३॥
33. prātikāmī tathā pāpo draupadyāḥ kleśakṛddhataḥ ,
bhrātaraste hatāḥ sarve śūrā vikrāntayodhinaḥ.
33. prātikāmī tathā pāpaḥ draupadyāḥ kleśa-kṛt hataḥ
bhrātaraḥ te hatāḥ sarve śūrāḥ vikrānta-yodhinaḥ
33. tathā pāpaḥ draupadyāḥ kleśa-kṛt prātikāmī hataḥ
te sarve śūrāḥ vikrānta-yodhinaḥ bhrātaraḥ hatāḥ
33. And also Prātikāmī, the sinful tormentor of Draupadī, has been killed. All your brothers, the brave and valiant fighters, have been killed.
एते चान्ये च बहवो निहतास्त्वत्कृते नृपाः ।
त्वामद्य निहनिष्यामि गदया नात्र संशयः ॥३४॥
34. ete cānye ca bahavo nihatāstvatkṛte nṛpāḥ ,
tvāmadya nihaniṣyāmi gadayā nātra saṁśayaḥ.
34. ete ca anye ca bahavaḥ nihatāḥ tvat-kṛte nṛpāḥ
tvām adya nihaniṣyāmi gadayā na atra saṃśayaḥ
34. ete ca anye ca bahavaḥ nṛpāḥ tvat-kṛte nihatāḥ
adya tvām gadayā nihaniṣyāmi atra saṃśayaḥ na
34. These, and many other kings, have been killed because of you. Today, I will kill you with my mace; there is no doubt about this.
इत्येवमुच्चै राजेन्द्र भाषमाणं वृकोदरम् ।
उवाच वीतभी राजन्पुत्रस्ते सत्यविक्रमः ॥३५॥
35. ityevamuccai rājendra bhāṣamāṇaṁ vṛkodaram ,
uvāca vītabhī rājanputraste satyavikramaḥ.
35. iti evam uccaiḥ rājendra bhāṣamāṇam vṛkodaram
uvāca vīta-bhīḥ rājan putraḥ te satya-vikramaḥ
35. rājan rājendra iti evam uccaiḥ bhāṣamāṇam
vṛkodaram te satya-vikramaḥ vīta-bhīḥ putraḥ uvāca
35. Thus, while Vṛkodara (Bhīma) was speaking loudly, O king of kings, your fearless son, whose valor is true, spoke.
किं कत्थितेन बहुधा युध्यस्व त्वं वृकोदर ।
अद्य तेऽहं विनेष्यामि युद्धश्रद्धां कुलाधम ॥३६॥
36. kiṁ katthitena bahudhā yudhyasva tvaṁ vṛkodara ,
adya te'haṁ vineṣyāmi yuddhaśraddhāṁ kulādhama.
36. kim katthitena bahudhā yudhyasva tvam vṛkodara
adya te aham vineṣyāmi yuddhaśraddhām kulādhama
36. tvam vṛkodara kulādhama bahudhā katthitena kim
yudhyasva adya aham te yuddhaśraddhām vineṣyāmi
36. What is the use of much boasting? Fight, you son of Vṛka! Today, O disgrace of your family, I will surely remove your eagerness for battle (śraddhā).
नैव दुर्योधनः क्षुद्र केनचित्त्वद्विधेन वै ।
शक्यस्त्रासयितुं वाचा यथान्यः प्राकृतो नरः ॥३७॥
37. naiva duryodhanaḥ kṣudra kenacittvadvidhena vai ,
śakyastrāsayituṁ vācā yathānyaḥ prākṛto naraḥ.
37. na eva duryodhanaḥ kṣudra kena cit tvadvidhena vai
śakyaḥ trāsayitum vācā yathā anyaḥ prākṛtaḥ naraḥ
37. kṣudra duryodhanaḥ tvadvidhena kenacit vācā vai na
eva śakyaḥ trāsayitum yathā anyaḥ prākṛtaḥ naraḥ
37. O wretched one, Duryodhana is certainly not one who can be frightened by words by anyone like you, like any other common man.
चिरकालेप्सितं दिष्ट्या हृदयस्थमिदं मम ।
त्वया सह गदायुद्धं त्रिदशैरुपपादितम् ॥३८॥
38. cirakālepsitaṁ diṣṭyā hṛdayasthamidaṁ mama ,
tvayā saha gadāyuddhaṁ tridaśairupapāditam.
38. cirakāla īpsitam diṣṭyā hṛdayastham idam mama
tvayā saha gadāyuddham tridaśaiḥ upapāditam
38. diṣṭyā mama cirakāla īpsitam hṛdayastham idam
tvayā saha gadāyuddham tridaśaiḥ upapāditam
38. Fortunately, this mace-fight with you, which has been long-desired and held within my heart, has been brought about by the gods.
किं वाचा बहुनोक्तेन कत्थितेन च दुर्मते ।
वाणी संपद्यतामेषा कर्मणा मा चिरं कृथाः ॥३९॥
39. kiṁ vācā bahunoktena katthitena ca durmate ,
vāṇī saṁpadyatāmeṣā karmaṇā mā ciraṁ kṛthāḥ.
39. kim vācā bahunā uktena katthitena ca durmate
vāṇī sampadyatām eṣā karmaṇā mā ciram kṛthāḥ
39. durmate vācā bahunā uktena ca katthitena kim
eṣā vāṇī karmaṇā sampadyatām ciram mā kṛthāḥ
39. O evil-minded one, what is the use of much spoken by words and boasting? Let this speech be fulfilled by action (karma); do not delay!
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा सर्व एवाभ्यपूजयन् ।
राजानः सोमकाश्चैव ये तत्रासन्समागताः ॥४०॥
40. tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā sarva evābhyapūjayan ,
rājānaḥ somakāścaiva ye tatrāsansamāgatāḥ.
40. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā sarve eva abhyapūjayan
rājānaḥ somakāḥ ca eva ye tatra āsan samāgatāḥ
40. ye rājānaḥ somakāḥ ca eva tatra samāgatāḥ āsan,
sarve eva tasya tat vacanam śrutvā abhyapūjayan
40. Hearing those words of his, all the kings and Somakas who had assembled there indeed honored him.
ततः संपूजितः सर्वैः संप्रहृष्टतनूरुहः ।
भूयो धीरं मनश्चक्रे युद्धाय कुरुनन्दनः ॥४१॥
41. tataḥ saṁpūjitaḥ sarvaiḥ saṁprahṛṣṭatanūruhaḥ ,
bhūyo dhīraṁ manaścakre yuddhāya kurunandanaḥ.
41. tataḥ saṃpūjitaḥ sarvaiḥ samprahṛṣṭatanūruhaḥ
bhūyaḥ dhīram manaḥ cakre yuddhāya kurunandanaḥ
41. tataḥ sarvaiḥ saṃpūjitaḥ,
samprahṛṣṭatanūruhaḥ kurunandanaḥ bhūyaḥ yuddhāya dhīram manaḥ cakre
41. Then, having been greatly honored by all, and with his body hairs bristling with exhilaration, the delight of the Kurus (Duryodhana) again made his resolve firm for battle.
तं मत्तमिव मातङ्गं तलतालैर्नराधिपाः ।
भूयः संहर्षयां चक्रुर्दुर्योधनममर्षणम् ॥४२॥
42. taṁ mattamiva mātaṅgaṁ talatālairnarādhipāḥ ,
bhūyaḥ saṁharṣayāṁ cakrurduryodhanamamarṣaṇam.
42. tam mattam iva mātaṅgam talatālaiḥ narādhipāḥ
bhūyaḥ saṃharṣayāṃ cakruḥ duryodhanam amarṣaṇam
42. narādhipāḥ talatālaiḥ bhūyaḥ mattam mātaṅgam iva,
amarṣaṇam tam duryodhanam saṃharṣayāṃ cakruḥ
42. The kings, with the clapping of their hands, again greatly encouraged that indignant Duryodhana, who was like an intoxicated elephant.
तं महात्मा महात्मानं गदामुद्यम्य पाण्डवः ।
अभिदुद्राव वेगेन धार्तराष्ट्रं वृकोदरः ॥४३॥
43. taṁ mahātmā mahātmānaṁ gadāmudyamya pāṇḍavaḥ ,
abhidudrāva vegena dhārtarāṣṭraṁ vṛkodaraḥ.
43. tam mahātmā mahātmānam gadām udyamya pāṇḍavaḥ
abhidudrāva vegena dhārtarāṣṭram vṛkodaraḥ
43. mahātmā vṛkodaraḥ pāṇḍavaḥ gadām udyamya,
vegena tam mahātmānam dhārtarāṣṭram abhidudrāva
43. Raising his mace, the great-souled Pāṇḍava, Vṛkodara (Bhīma), swiftly rushed towards that great-souled son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (Duryodhana).
बृंहन्ति कुञ्जरास्तत्र हया हेषन्ति चासकृत् ।
शस्त्राणि चाप्यदीप्यन्त पाण्डवानां जयैषिणाम् ॥४४॥
44. bṛṁhanti kuñjarāstatra hayā heṣanti cāsakṛt ,
śastrāṇi cāpyadīpyanta pāṇḍavānāṁ jayaiṣiṇām.
44. bṛṃhanti kuñjarāḥ tatra hayāḥ heṣanti ca asakṛt
śastrāṇi ca api adīpyanta pāṇḍavānām jayaiṣiṇām
44. tatra kuñjarāḥ bṛṃhanti hayāḥ ca asakṛt heṣanti
pāṇḍavānām jayaiṣiṇām śastrāṇi ca api adīpyanta
44. There, elephants trumpeted and horses neighed repeatedly. The weapons of the Pandavas, who sought victory, also shone brilliantly.
