वैशंपायन उवाच ।
करिष्य इति भीमेन प्रतिज्ञाते तु भारत ।
आजग्मुस्ते ततः सर्वे भैक्षमादाय पाण्डवाः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
kariṣya iti bhīmena pratijñāte tu bhārata ,
ājagmuste tataḥ sarve bhaikṣamādāya pāṇḍavāḥ.

bhārata ājagmuḥ te tataḥ sarve bhaikṣam ādāya pāṇḍavāḥ
1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: "O descendant of Bharata, when Bhīma had vowed, 'I will do it,' then all the Pāṇḍavas returned, having collected their alms."
आकारेणैव तं ज्ञात्वा पाण्डुपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।
रहः समुपविश्यैकस्ततः पप्रच्छ मातरम् ॥२॥
2. ākāreṇaiva taṁ jñātvā pāṇḍuputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
rahaḥ samupaviśyaikastataḥ papraccha mātaram.
2. ākāreṇa eva tam jñātvā pāṇḍuputraḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
rahaḥ samupaviśya ekaḥ tataḥ papraccha mātaram
2. Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Pāṇḍu, recognizing him (Bhīma) simply by his demeanor, then sat down alone in a private place and asked his mother.
किं चिकीर्षत्ययं कर्म भीमो भीमपराक्रमः ।
भवत्यनुमते कच्चिदयं कर्तुमिहेच्छति ॥३॥
3. kiṁ cikīrṣatyayaṁ karma bhīmo bhīmaparākramaḥ ,
bhavatyanumate kaccidayaṁ kartumihecchati.
3. kim cikīrṣati ayam karma bhīmaḥ bhīmaparākramaḥ
bhavatyā anumate kaccit ayam kartum iha icchati
3. "What deed does this Bhīma, of terrible prowess, intend to do? Is he wishing to do this here with your permission?"
कुन्त्युवाच ।
ममैव वचनादेष करिष्यति परंतपः ।
ब्राह्मणार्थे महत्कृत्यं मोष्काय नगरस्य च ॥४॥
4. kuntyuvāca ,
mamaiva vacanādeṣa kariṣyati paraṁtapaḥ ,
brāhmaṇārthe mahatkṛtyaṁ moṣkāya nagarasya ca.
4. kuntī uvāca mama eva vacanāt eṣaḥ kariṣyati parantapaḥ
brāhmaṇārthe mahat kṛtyam moṣkāya nagarasya ca
4. Kuntī said: "By my very word, this scorcher of foes (Yudhiṣṭhira) will perform a great deed for the sake of the brahmins and for the safety (mokṣa) of the city."
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
किमिदं साहसं तीक्ष्णं भवत्या दुष्कृतं कृतम् ।
परित्यागं हि पुत्रस्य न प्रशंसन्ति साधवः ॥५॥
5. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
kimidaṁ sāhasaṁ tīkṣṇaṁ bhavatyā duṣkṛtaṁ kṛtam ,
parityāgaṁ hi putrasya na praśaṁsanti sādhavaḥ.
5. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca kim idam sāhasam tīkṣṇam bhavatyā duṣkṛtam
kṛtam parityāgam hi putrasya na praśaṃsanti sādhavaḥ
5. Yudhiṣṭhira said: "What is this rash and harsh misdeed done by you? Indeed, virtuous people (sādhavaḥ) do not praise the abandonment of a son."
कथं परसुतस्यार्थे स्वसुतं त्यक्तुमिच्छसि ।
लोकवृत्तिविरुद्धं वै पुत्रत्यागात्कृतं त्वया ॥६॥
6. kathaṁ parasutasyārthe svasutaṁ tyaktumicchasi ,
lokavṛttiviruddhaṁ vai putratyāgātkṛtaṁ tvayā.
6. katham parasutasya arthe svasutam tyaktum icchasi
| lokavṛttiviruddham vai putratyāgāt kṛtam tvayā
6. How can you wish to abandon your own son for the sake of another's son? Indeed, by abandoning your son, you would be doing something contrary to public custom (dharma).
यस्य बाहू समाश्रित्य सुखं सर्वे स्वपामहे ।
राज्यं चापहृतं क्षुद्रैराजिहीर्षामहे पुनः ॥७॥
7. yasya bāhū samāśritya sukhaṁ sarve svapāmahe ,
rājyaṁ cāpahṛtaṁ kṣudrairājihīrṣāmahe punaḥ.
7. yasya bāhū samāśritya sukham sarve svapāmahe |
rājyam ca apahṛtam kṣudraiḥ ājihīrṣāmahe punaḥ
7. Relying on whose arms, we all sleep peacefully. That kingdom, stolen by contemptible individuals, we wish to regain again.
यस्य दुर्योधनो वीर्यं चिन्तयन्नमितौजसः ।
न शेते वसतीः सर्वा दुःखाच्छकुनिना सह ॥८॥
8. yasya duryodhano vīryaṁ cintayannamitaujasaḥ ,
na śete vasatīḥ sarvā duḥkhācchakuninā saha.
8. yasya duryodhanaḥ vīryam cintayan amita ojasaḥ
| na śete vasatīḥ sarvāḥ duḥkhāt śakuninā saha
8. Thinking of the valor of that immensely powerful one, Duryodhana does not sleep any night due to distress, even with Śakuni.
यस्य वीरस्य वीर्येण मुक्ता जतुगृहाद्वयम् ।
अन्येभ्यश्चैव पापेभ्यो निहतश्च पुरोचनः ॥९॥
9. yasya vīrasya vīryeṇa muktā jatugṛhādvayam ,
anyebhyaścaiva pāpebhyo nihataśca purocanaḥ.
9. yasya vīrasya vīryeṇa muktā jatugṛhāt vayam |
anyebhyaḥ ca eva pāpebhyaḥ nihataḥ ca purocanaḥ
9. By the valor of that hero, we were liberated from the lac-house and also from other evils, and Purocana was killed.
यस्य वीर्यं समाश्रित्य वसुपूर्णां वसुंधराम् ।
इमां मन्यामहे प्राप्तां निहत्य धृतराष्ट्रजान् ॥१०॥
10. yasya vīryaṁ samāśritya vasupūrṇāṁ vasuṁdharām ,
imāṁ manyāmahe prāptāṁ nihatya dhṛtarāṣṭrajān.
10. yasya vīryam samāśritya vasupūrṇām vasundharām
| imām manyāmahe prāptām nihatya dhṛtarāṣṭrajān
10. Relying on whose valor, we consider this earth, filled with treasures, to be regained after killing the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra.
तस्य व्यवसितस्त्यागो बुद्धिमास्थाय कां त्वया ।
कच्चिन्न दुःखैर्बुद्धिस्ते विप्लुता गतचेतसः ॥११॥
11. tasya vyavasitastyāgo buddhimāsthāya kāṁ tvayā ,
kaccinna duḥkhairbuddhiste viplutā gatacetasaḥ.
11. tasya vyavasitaḥ tyāgaḥ buddhim āsthāya kām tvayā
kaccit na duḥkhaiḥ buddhiḥ te viplutā gatacetasaḥ
11. What kind of understanding (buddhi) did you rely upon, mother, to make this resolute decision to abandon him? I hope your mind is not overwhelmed by sorrows, rendering you senseless.
कुन्त्युवाच ।
युधिष्ठिर न संतापः कार्यः प्रति वृकोदरम् ।
न चायं बुद्धिदौर्बल्याद्व्यवसायः कृतो मया ॥१२॥
12. kuntyuvāca ,
yudhiṣṭhira na saṁtāpaḥ kāryaḥ prati vṛkodaram ,
na cāyaṁ buddhidaurbalyādvyavasāyaḥ kṛto mayā.
12. kuntī uvāca yudhiṣṭhira na saṃtāpaḥ kāryaḥ prati vṛkodaram
na ca ayam buddhidaurbalyāt vyavasāyaḥ kṛtaḥ mayā
12. Kunti said, "O Yudhishthira, you should not feel any regret regarding Bhima. And this resolve was not made by me due to any weakness of intellect (buddhi)."
इह विप्रस्य भवने वयं पुत्र सुखोषिताः ।
तस्य प्रतिक्रिया तात मयेयं प्रसमीक्षिता ।
एतावानेव पुरुषः कृतं यस्मिन्न नश्यति ॥१३॥
13. iha viprasya bhavane vayaṁ putra sukhoṣitāḥ ,
tasya pratikriyā tāta mayeyaṁ prasamīkṣitā ,
etāvāneva puruṣaḥ kṛtaṁ yasminna naśyati.
13. iha viprasya bhavane vayam putra
sukhoṣitāḥ tasya pratikriyā tāta
mayā iyam prasamīkṣitā etāvān
eva puruṣaḥ kṛtam yasmin na naśyati
13. Kunti continues, "O son, we have lived comfortably here in the house of this brahmin. Therefore, O dear one, I have deemed this (action) to be a requital for him. Indeed, that man (puruṣa) is truly worthy in whom a favor is never wasted."
दृष्ट्वा भीमस्य विक्रान्तं तदा जतुगृहे महत् ।
हिडिम्बस्य वधाच्चैव विश्वासो मे वृकोदरे ॥१४॥
14. dṛṣṭvā bhīmasya vikrāntaṁ tadā jatugṛhe mahat ,
hiḍimbasya vadhāccaiva viśvāso me vṛkodare.
14. dṛṣṭvā bhīmasya vikrāntam tadā jatugṛhe mahat
hiḍimbasya vadhāt ca eva viśvāsaḥ me vṛkodare
14. My confidence (viśvāsa) in Bhima (vṛkodara) was established at that time, seeing his great valor (vikrānta) in the lac-house, and indeed, also through his slaying of Hiḍimba.
बाह्वोर्बलं हि भीमस्य नागायुतसमं महत् ।
येन यूयं गजप्रख्या निर्व्यूढा वारणावतात् ॥१५॥
15. bāhvorbalaṁ hi bhīmasya nāgāyutasamaṁ mahat ,
yena yūyaṁ gajaprakhyā nirvyūḍhā vāraṇāvatāt.
15. bāhvoḥ balam hi bhīmasya nāgāyutasamam mahat
yena yūyam gajaprakhyāḥ nirvyūḍhāḥ vāraṇāvatāt
15. Indeed, Bhima possesses immense arm strength, equivalent to that of ten thousand elephants. It was by him that all of you, renowned like elephants, were rescued from Vāraṇāvata.
वृकोदरबलो नान्यो न भूतो न भविष्यति ।
योऽभ्युदीयाद्युधि श्रेष्ठमपि वज्रधरं स्वयम् ॥१६॥
16. vṛkodarabalo nānyo na bhūto na bhaviṣyati ,
yo'bhyudīyādyudhi śreṣṭhamapi vajradharaṁ svayam.
16. vṛkodarabalaḥ na anyaḥ na bhūtaḥ na bhaviṣyati yaḥ
abhi-udīyāt yudhi śreṣṭham api vajradharam svayam
16. There is no one else, nor has there ever been, nor will there ever be, who possesses the strength of Vṛkodara (Bhīma) and who would challenge even the mighty wielder of the thunderbolt (Indra) himself in battle.
जातमात्रः पुरा चैष ममाङ्कात्पतितो गिरौ ।
शरीरगौरवात्तस्य शिला गात्रैर्विचूर्णिता ॥१७॥
17. jātamātraḥ purā caiṣa mamāṅkātpatito girau ,
śarīragauravāttasya śilā gātrairvicūrṇitā.
17. jātamātraḥ purā ca eṣaḥ mama aṅkāt patitaḥ girau
śarīra-gauravāt tasya śilā gātraiḥ vicūrṇitā
17. And long ago, immediately after his birth, this one (Bhīma) fell from my lap onto the mountain. Because of his body's immense weight, the rock was crushed by his very limbs.
तदहं प्रज्ञया स्मृत्वा बलं भीमस्य पाण्डव ।
प्रतीकारं च विप्रस्य ततः कृतवती मतिम् ॥१८॥
18. tadahaṁ prajñayā smṛtvā balaṁ bhīmasya pāṇḍava ,
pratīkāraṁ ca viprasya tataḥ kṛtavatī matim.
18. tat aham prajñayā smṛtvā balam bhīmasya pāṇḍava
pratīkāram ca viprasya tataḥ kṛtavatī matim
18. Therefore, O Pāṇḍava, having remembered Bhīma's strength and the Brahmin's retaliation through my intelligence, I then formed this resolve.
नेदं लोभान्न चाज्ञानान्न च मोहाद्विनिश्चितम् ।
बुद्धिपूर्वं तु धर्मस्य व्यवसायः कृतो मया ॥१९॥
19. nedaṁ lobhānna cājñānānna ca mohādviniścitam ,
buddhipūrvaṁ tu dharmasya vyavasāyaḥ kṛto mayā.
19. na idam lobhāt na ca ajñānāt na ca mohāt viniścitam
buddhi-pūrvam tu dharmasya vyavasāyaḥ kṛtaḥ mayā
19. This decision was not made by me out of greed, nor out of ignorance, nor out of delusion. Rather, this undertaking for the sake of natural law (dharma) was deliberately carried out by me.
अर्थौ द्वावपि निष्पन्नौ युधिष्ठिर भविष्यतः ।
प्रतीकारश्च वासस्य धर्मश्च चरितो महान् ॥२०॥
20. arthau dvāvapi niṣpannau yudhiṣṭhira bhaviṣyataḥ ,
pratīkāraśca vāsasya dharmaśca carito mahān.
20. arthau dvau api niṣpannau yudhiṣṭhira bhaviṣyataḥ
pratīkāraḥ ca vāsasya dharmaḥ ca caritaḥ mahān
20. O Yudhiṣṭhira, both objectives will indeed be achieved: the requital for our stay (with the Brahmin) will be accomplished, and a great act of natural law (dharma) will be observed.
यो ब्राह्मणस्य साहाय्यं कुर्यादर्थेषु कर्हिचित् ।
क्षत्रियः स शुभाँल्लोकान्प्राप्नुयादिति मे श्रुतम् ॥२१॥
21. yo brāhmaṇasya sāhāyyaṁ kuryādartheṣu karhicit ,
kṣatriyaḥ sa śubhāँllokānprāpnuyāditi me śrutam.
21. yaḥ brāhmaṇasya sāhāyyam kuryāt artheṣu karhicit
kṣatriyaḥ sa śubhān lokān prāpnuyāt iti me śrutam
21. It has been heard by me that any Kṣatriya who, at any time, helps a Brahmin in their affairs will attain auspicious worlds.
क्षत्रियः क्षत्रियस्यैव कुर्वाणो वधमोक्षणम् ।
विपुलां कीर्तिमाप्नोति लोकेऽस्मिंश्च परत्र च ॥२२॥
22. kṣatriyaḥ kṣatriyasyaiva kurvāṇo vadhamokṣaṇam ,
vipulāṁ kīrtimāpnoti loke'smiṁśca paratra ca.
22. kṣatriyaḥ kṣatriyasya eva kurvāṇaḥ vadhamokṣaṇam
vipulām kīrtim āpnoti loke asmin ca paratra ca
22. A Kṣatriya who saves another Kṣatriya from death attains great fame in both this world and the next.
वैश्यस्यैव तु साहाय्यं कुर्वाणः क्षत्रियो युधि ।
स सर्वेष्वपि लोकेषु प्रजा रञ्जयते ध्रुवम् ॥२३॥
23. vaiśyasyaiva tu sāhāyyaṁ kurvāṇaḥ kṣatriyo yudhi ,
sa sarveṣvapi lokeṣu prajā rañjayate dhruvam.
23. vaiśyasya eva tu sāhāyyam kurvāṇaḥ kṣatriyaḥ yudhi
sa sarveṣu api lokeṣu prajāḥ rañjayate dhruvam
23. Moreover, a Kṣatriya who provides help to a Vaiśya in battle certainly pleases the people in all worlds.
शूद्रं तु मोक्षयन्राजा शरणार्थिनमागतम् ।
प्राप्नोतीह कुले जन्म सद्रव्ये राजसत्कृते ॥२४॥
24. śūdraṁ tu mokṣayanrājā śaraṇārthinamāgatam ,
prāpnotīha kule janma sadravye rājasatkṛte.
24. śūdram tu mokṣayan rājā śaraṇārthinam āgatam
prāpnoti iha kule janma sadravye rājasatkṛte
24. Furthermore, a king who liberates a Śūdra who has come seeking refuge attains birth in this world into a wealthy family that is honored by other kings.
एवं स भगवान्व्यासः पुरा कौरवनन्दन ।
प्रोवाच सुतरां प्राज्ञस्तस्मादेतच्चिकीर्षितम् ॥२५॥
25. evaṁ sa bhagavānvyāsaḥ purā kauravanandana ,
provāca sutarāṁ prājñastasmādetaccikīrṣitam.
25. evam saḥ bhagavān vyāsaḥ purā kauravanandana
provāca sutarām prājñaḥ tasmāt etat cikīrṣitam
25. O delighter of the Kurus, the venerable and exceedingly wise Vyāsa spoke thus in ancient times. Therefore, this (instruction) should be followed.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
उपपन्नमिदं मातस्त्वया यद्बुद्धिपूर्वकम् ।
आर्तस्य ब्राह्मणस्यैवमनुक्रोशादिदं कृतम् ।
ध्रुवमेष्यति भीमोऽयं निहत्य पुरुषादकम् ॥२६॥
26. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
upapannamidaṁ mātastvayā yadbuddhipūrvakam ,
ārtasya brāhmaṇasyaivamanukrośādidaṁ kṛtam ,
dhruvameṣyati bhīmo'yaṁ nihatya puruṣādakam.
26. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca | upapannam idam mātas
tvayā yat buddhipūrvakam | ārtasya
brāhmaṇasya evam anukrośāt idam kṛtam | dhruvam
eṣyati bhīmaḥ ayam nihatya puruṣādakam
26. Yudhishthira said: "Mother, what you have done is indeed appropriate and well-thought-out. This act was motivated by compassion for the distressed Brahmin. Surely, Bhīma will return after killing that man-eating demon (puruṣādaka)."
यथा त्विदं न विन्देयुर्नरा नगरवासिनः ।
तथायं ब्राह्मणो वाच्यः परिग्राह्यश्च यत्नतः ॥२७॥
27. yathā tvidaṁ na vindeyurnarā nagaravāsinaḥ ,
tathāyaṁ brāhmaṇo vācyaḥ parigrāhyaśca yatnataḥ.
27. yathā tu idam na vindeyuḥ narā nagaravāsinaḥ |
tathā ayam brāhmaṇaḥ vācyaḥ parigrāhyaḥ ca yatnataḥ
27. So that the residents of the city (nara) do not learn of this, this Brahmin should be carefully reassured and protected.
