कुन्त्युवाच ।
ब्राह्मणं यन्त्रिता राजनुपस्थास्यामि पूजया ।
यथाप्रतिज्ञं राजेन्द्र न च मिथ्या ब्रवीम्यहम् ॥१॥
1. kuntyuvāca ,
brāhmaṇaṁ yantritā rājanupasthāsyāmi pūjayā ,
yathāpratijñaṁ rājendra na ca mithyā bravīmyaham.

| yathāpratijñam rājendra na ca mithyā bravīmi aham
1. Kunti said: "O King, I, restrained (by my word), will attend to the Brahmin with reverence. O best of kings, I will not speak falsely, in accordance with my promise."
एष चैव स्वभावो मे पूजयेयं द्विजानिति ।
तव चैव प्रियं कार्यं श्रेयश्चैतत्परं मम ॥२॥
2. eṣa caiva svabhāvo me pūjayeyaṁ dvijāniti ,
tava caiva priyaṁ kāryaṁ śreyaścaitatparaṁ mama.
2. eṣaḥ ca eva svabhāvaḥ me pūjayeyam dvijān iti |
tava ca eva priyam kāryam śreyaḥ ca etat param mama
2. Indeed, this is my intrinsic nature (svabhāva) that I should worship the Brahmins. Moreover, this deed is pleasing to you, and it is my supreme welfare.
यद्येवैष्यति सायाह्ने यदि प्रातरथो निशि ।
यद्यर्धरात्रे भगवान्न मे कोपं करिष्यति ॥३॥
3. yadyevaiṣyati sāyāhne yadi prātaratho niśi ,
yadyardharātre bhagavānna me kopaṁ kariṣyati.
3. yadi eva eṣyati sāyāhne yadi prātaḥ atha u niśi
| yadi ardharātre bhagavān na me kopam kariṣyati
3. Whether the revered one comes in the evening, or in the morning, or at night, or at midnight, he will not incur my anger.
लाभो ममैष राजेन्द्र यद्वै पूजयती द्विजान् ।
आदेशे तव तिष्ठन्ती हितं कुर्यां नरोत्तम ॥४॥
4. lābho mamaiṣa rājendra yadvai pūjayatī dvijān ,
ādeśe tava tiṣṭhantī hitaṁ kuryāṁ narottama.
4. lābhaḥ mama eṣaḥ rājendra yat vai pūjayantī dvijān
| ādeśe tava tiṣṭhantī hitam kuryām narottama
4. O best of kings, this is my gain (lābha) that I am indeed worshipping the Brahmins. Remaining under your command, O best among men, I would do what is beneficial.
विस्रब्धो भव राजेन्द्र न व्यलीकं द्विजोत्तमः ।
वसन्प्राप्स्यति ते गेहे सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥५॥
5. visrabdho bhava rājendra na vyalīkaṁ dvijottamaḥ ,
vasanprāpsyati te gehe satyametadbravīmi te.
5. visrabdhaḥ bhava rājendra na vyalīkam dvijottamaḥ
vasan prāpsyati te gehe satyam etat bravīmi te
5. Rest assured, O best of kings (rājendra). The eminent brahmin (dvijottama) will not cause any trouble while residing in your home. This truth I declare to you.
यत्प्रियं च द्विजस्यास्य हितं चैव तवानघ ।
यतिष्यामि तथा राजन्व्येतु ते मानसो ज्वरः ॥६॥
6. yatpriyaṁ ca dvijasyāsya hitaṁ caiva tavānagha ,
yatiṣyāmi tathā rājanvyetu te mānaso jvaraḥ.
6. yat priyam ca dvijasya asya hitam ca eva tava anagha
yatiṣyāmi tathā rājan vyetu te mānasaḥ jvaraḥ
6. O sinless one (anagha), I will endeavor for whatever is both pleasing to this brahmin (dvija) and beneficial for you, O King. Let your mental fever (mānasa jvara) depart.
ब्राह्मणा हि महाभागाः पूजिताः पृथिवीपते ।
तारणाय समर्थाः स्युर्विपरीते वधाय च ॥७॥
7. brāhmaṇā hi mahābhāgāḥ pūjitāḥ pṛthivīpate ,
tāraṇāya samarthāḥ syurviparīte vadhāya ca.
7. brāhmaṇāḥ hi mahābhāgāḥ pūjitāḥ pṛthivīpate
tāraṇāya samarthāḥ syuḥ viparīte vadhāya ca
7. Indeed, O Lord of the earth (pṛthivīpati), highly fortunate (mahābhāga) brahmins (brāhmaṇa), when honored, are capable of bringing salvation (tāraṇa). Conversely, if treated otherwise, they can also cause destruction (vadha).
साहमेतद्विजानन्ती तोषयिष्ये द्विजोत्तमम् ।
न मत्कृते व्यथां राजन्प्राप्स्यसि द्विजसत्तमात् ॥८॥
8. sāhametadvijānantī toṣayiṣye dvijottamam ,
na matkṛte vyathāṁ rājanprāpsyasi dvijasattamāt.
8. sā aham etat vijānantī toṣayiṣye dvijottamām na
matkṛte vyathām rājan prāpsyasi dvijasattamāt
8. Knowing this (etat), I (sā aham) will satisfy the eminent brahmin (dvijottama). O King, you will not incur any trouble (vyathā) from that best of brahmins (dvijasattama) because of me (matkṛte).
अपराधे हि राजेन्द्र राज्ञामश्रेयसे द्विजाः ।
भवन्ति च्यवनो यद्वत्सुकन्यायाः कृते पुरा ॥९॥
9. aparādhe hi rājendra rājñāmaśreyase dvijāḥ ,
bhavanti cyavano yadvatsukanyāyāḥ kṛte purā.
9. aparādhe hi rājendra rājñām aśreyase dvijāḥ
bhavanti cyavanaḥ yadvat sukanyāyāḥ kṛte purā
9. Indeed, O King of kings, when Brahmins (dvija) are offended, they bring about misfortune for kings, just as Cyavana did in the past for the sake of Sukanyā.
नियमेन परेणाहमुपस्थास्ये द्विजोत्तमम् ।
यथा त्वया नरेन्द्रेदं भाषितं ब्राह्मणं प्रति ॥१०॥
10. niyamena pareṇāhamupasthāsye dvijottamam ,
yathā tvayā narendredaṁ bhāṣitaṁ brāhmaṇaṁ prati.
10. niyamena pareṇa aham upasthāsye dvijottamam yathā
tvayā narendra idam bhāṣitam brāhmaṇam prati
10. O King, I shall attend upon the best of Brahmins (dvija) with supreme discipline, just as this was spoken by you concerning the Brahmin.
राजोवाच ।
एवमेतत्त्वया भद्रे कर्तव्यमविशङ्कया ।
मद्धितार्थं कुलार्थं च तथात्मार्थं च नन्दिनि ॥११॥
11. rājovāca ,
evametattvayā bhadre kartavyamaviśaṅkayā ,
maddhitārthaṁ kulārthaṁ ca tathātmārthaṁ ca nandini.
11. rājā uvāca evam etat tvayā bhadre kartavyam aviśaṅkayā
maddhitārtham kulārtham ca tathātmārtham ca nandinī
11. The king said: 'O gracious one, you must do this without hesitation, for my benefit, for the sake of the family, and also for your own sake (ātman), O Nandini.'
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वा तु तां कन्यां कुन्तिभोजो महायशाः ।
पृथां परिददौ तस्मै द्विजाय सुतवत्सलः ॥१२॥
12. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evamuktvā tu tāṁ kanyāṁ kuntibhojo mahāyaśāḥ ,
pṛthāṁ paridadau tasmai dvijāya sutavatsalaḥ.
12. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca evam uktvā tu tām kanyām kuntibhojaḥ
mahāyaśāḥ pṛthām paridadau tasmai dvijāya sutavatsalaḥ
12. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: 'Having spoken thus, the glorious Kuntibhoja, who was affectionate towards his daughter, gave that girl, Pṛthā, to that Brahmin (dvija).'
इयं ब्रह्मन्मम सुता बाला सुखविवर्धिता ।
अपराध्येत यत्किंचिन्न तत्कार्यं हृदि त्वया ॥१३॥
13. iyaṁ brahmanmama sutā bālā sukhavivardhitā ,
aparādhyeta yatkiṁcinna tatkāryaṁ hṛdi tvayā.
13. iyam brahman mama sutā bālā sukha-vivardhitā
aparādhyeta yat kiñcit na tat kāryam hṛdi tvayā
13. O Brahmin, this young daughter of mine has been raised in comfort. Whatever offense she might commit, you should not hold that in your heart.
द्विजातयो महाभागा वृद्धबालतपस्विषु ।
भवन्त्यक्रोधनाः प्रायो विरुद्धेष्वपि नित्यदा ॥१४॥
14. dvijātayo mahābhāgā vṛddhabālatapasviṣu ,
bhavantyakrodhanāḥ prāyo viruddheṣvapi nityadā.
14. dvijātayaḥ mahābhāgāḥ vṛddha-bāla-tapasviṣu
bhavanti akrodhanāḥ prāyaḥ viruddheṣu api nityadā
14. Noble (mahābhāga) brahmins (dvijāti) are generally free from anger, and they are always so even towards adversaries, as well as towards the old, children, and ascetics (tapasvin).
सुमहत्यपराधेऽपि क्षान्तिः कार्या द्विजातिभिः ।
यथाशक्ति यथोत्साहं पूजा ग्राह्या द्विजोत्तम ॥१५॥
15. sumahatyaparādhe'pi kṣāntiḥ kāryā dvijātibhiḥ ,
yathāśakti yathotsāhaṁ pūjā grāhyā dvijottama.
15. su-mahati aparādhe api kṣāntiḥ kāryā dvijātibhiḥ
| yathāśakti yathā-utsāham pūjā grāhyā dvijottama
15. Even in the case of a very great offense, patience and forgiveness (kṣānti) should be shown by brahmins (dvijāti). O best of brahmins (dvijāti), honor (pūjā) should be accepted according to one's ability and enthusiasm.
तथेति ब्राह्मणेनोक्ते स राजा प्रीतमानसः ।
हंसचन्द्रांशुसंकाशं गृहमस्य न्यवेदयत् ॥१६॥
16. tatheti brāhmaṇenokte sa rājā prītamānasaḥ ,
haṁsacandrāṁśusaṁkāśaṁ gṛhamasya nyavedayat.
16. tathā iti brāhmaṇena ukte saḥ rājā prīta-mānasaḥ
| haṃsa-candra-aṃśu-saṃkāśam gṛham asya nyavedayat
16. When the brahmin said, 'So be it,' that king, with a pleased mind, offered him a house resembling the brilliant rays of the swan and the moon.
तत्राग्निशरणे कॢप्तमासनं तस्य भानुमत् ।
आहारादि च सर्वं तत्तथैव प्रत्यवेदयत् ॥१७॥
17. tatrāgniśaraṇe kḷptamāsanaṁ tasya bhānumat ,
āhārādi ca sarvaṁ tattathaiva pratyavedayat.
17. tatra agniśaraṇe kḷptam āsanam tasya bhānumat
āhārādi ca sarvam tat tathā eva prati avedayat
17. In the fire-sanctuary, a resplendent seat was prepared for him. All the food and other provisions were also offered to him in the same manner.
निक्षिप्य राजपुत्री तु तन्द्रीं मानं तथैव च ।
आतस्थे परमं यत्नं ब्राह्मणस्याभिराधने ॥१८॥
18. nikṣipya rājaputrī tu tandrīṁ mānaṁ tathaiva ca ,
ātasthe paramaṁ yatnaṁ brāhmaṇasyābhirādhane.
18. nikṣipya rājaputrī tu tandrīm mānam tathā eva ca
ātathe paramam yatnam brāhmaṇasya abhirādhane
18. But the princess, having set aside both laziness and pride, indeed applied great effort in serving the brahmin.
तत्र सा ब्राह्मणं गत्वा पृथा शौचपरा सती ।
विधिवत्परिचारार्हं देववत्पर्यतोषयत् ॥१९॥
19. tatra sā brāhmaṇaṁ gatvā pṛthā śaucaparā satī ,
vidhivatparicārārhaṁ devavatparyatoṣayat.
19. tatra sā brāhmaṇam gatvā pṛthā śaucaparā satī
vidhivat paricārārham devavat pari atoṣayat
19. Then Pṛthā, being devoted to purity, approached the brahmin who was worthy of service and pleased him properly, treating him like a god.
