अभिमन्यौ हते बाले द्रौपद्यास्तनयेषु च ।
धृष्टद्युम्ने विराटे च द्रुपदे च महीपतौ ॥१॥

1. Yudhiṣṭhira said: Even after the young Abhimanyu was killed, and among the sons of Draupadī, Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Virāṭa, and King Drupada (were also killed)...
वसुषेणे च धर्मज्ञे धृष्टकेतौ च पार्थिवे ।
तथान्येषु नरेन्द्रेषु नानादेश्येषु संयुगे ॥२॥
2. vasuṣeṇe ca dharmajñe dhṛṣṭaketau ca pārthive ,
tathānyeṣu narendreṣu nānādeśyeṣu saṁyuge.

2. ...and Vasusheṇa, who knew (dharma), and King Dhṛṣṭaketu, as well as other kings from various lands were killed in the battle.
न विमुञ्चति मां शोको ज्ञातिघातिनमातुरम् ।
राज्यकामुकमत्युग्रं स्ववंशोच्छेदकारकम् ॥३॥
3. na vimuñcati māṁ śoko jñātighātinamāturam ,
rājyakāmukamatyugraṁ svavaṁśocchedakārakam.
3. na vimuñcati mām śokaḥ jñātighātinam āturam
rājyakāmukam atyugram svavaṃśocchedakārakam
3. śokaḥ mām jñātighātinam āturam rājyakāmukam atyugram svavaṃśocchedakārakam na vimuñcati.
3. Sorrow does not leave me, who is a killer of kin, afflicted, exceedingly fierce, desirous of kingdom, and a destroyer of my own lineage.
यस्याङ्के क्रीडमानेन मया वै परिवर्तितम् ।
स मया राज्यलुब्धेन गाङ्गेयो विनिपातितः ॥४॥
4. yasyāṅke krīḍamānena mayā vai parivartitam ,
sa mayā rājyalubdhena gāṅgeyo vinipātitaḥ.

saḥ mayā rājyalubdhena gāṅgeyaḥ vinipātitaḥ
4. yasya aṅke krīḍamānena mayā vai [kālaḥ] parivartitam,

4. By me, who used to play in his lap, indeed (my childhood was) passed (with him). That Bhīṣma, the son of Gaṅgā (gāṅgeya), was struck down by me, who was greedy for the kingdom.
यदा ह्येनं विघूर्णन्तमपश्यं पार्थसायकैः ।
कम्पमानं यथा वज्रैः प्रेक्षमाणं शिखण्डिनम् ॥५॥
5. yadā hyenaṁ vighūrṇantamapaśyaṁ pārthasāyakaiḥ ,
kampamānaṁ yathā vajraiḥ prekṣamāṇaṁ śikhaṇḍinam.
5. yadā hi enam vighūrṇantam apaśyam pārthasāyakaiḥ
kampamānam yathā vajraiḥ prekṣamāṇam śikhaṇḍinam
5. yadā hi aham apaśyam enam pārthasāyakaiḥ vighūrṇantam

5. Indeed, when I saw him (Bhishma) reeling from Arjuna's arrows, trembling as if struck by thunderbolts, and looking intently at Śikhaṇḍin...
जीर्णं सिंहमिव प्रांशुं नरसिंहं पितामहम् ।
कीर्यमाणं शरैस्तीक्ष्णैर्दृष्ट्वा मे व्यथितं मनः ॥६॥
6. jīrṇaṁ siṁhamiva prāṁśuṁ narasiṁhaṁ pitāmaham ,
kīryamāṇaṁ śaraistīkṣṇairdṛṣṭvā me vyathitaṁ manaḥ.
6. jīrṇam siṃham iva prāṃśum narasiṃham pitāmaham
kīryamāṇam śaraiḥ tīkṣṇaiḥ dṛṣṭvā me vyathitam manaḥ
6. aham dṛṣṭvā jīrṇam siṃham iva prāṃśum narasiṃham pitāmaham tīkṣṇaiḥ śaraiḥ kīryamāṇam,
me manaḥ vyathitam
6. ...(when I saw him) that tall grandfather, the man-lion (Bhishma), resembling an old lion, being overwhelmed by sharp arrows, my mind became distressed.
प्राङ्मुखं सीदमानं च रथादपच्युतं शरैः ।
घूर्णमानं यथा शैलं तदा मे कश्मलोऽभवत् ॥७॥
7. prāṅmukhaṁ sīdamānaṁ ca rathādapacyutaṁ śaraiḥ ,
ghūrṇamānaṁ yathā śailaṁ tadā me kaśmalo'bhavat.
7. prāṅmukham sīdamānam ca rathāt apacyutam śaraiḥ
ghūrṇamānam yathā śailam tadā me kaśmalaḥ abhavat
7. aham apaśyam (taṃ) ca prāṅmukham sīdamānam ca śaraiḥ rathāt apacyutam yathā śailam ghūrṇamānam,
tadā me kaśmalaḥ abhavat
7. ...and (when I saw him) facing east, collapsing, fallen from his chariot by arrows, and reeling like a mountain, then a great confusion befell my mind.
यः स बाणधनुष्पाणिर्योधयामास भार्गवम् ।
बहून्यहानि कौरव्यः कुरुक्षेत्रे महामृधे ॥८॥
8. yaḥ sa bāṇadhanuṣpāṇiryodhayāmāsa bhārgavam ,
bahūnyahāni kauravyaḥ kurukṣetre mahāmṛdhe.

8. O Kauravya (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), he (Bhishma) who, holding a bow and arrows, fought with Bhargava (Paraśurāma) for many days in the great battle of Kurukṣetra.
समेतं पार्थिवं क्षत्रं वाराणस्यां नदीसुतः ।
कन्यार्थमाह्वयद्वीरो रथेनैकेन संयुगे ॥९॥
9. sametaṁ pārthivaṁ kṣatraṁ vārāṇasyāṁ nadīsutaḥ ,
kanyārthamāhvayadvīro rathenaikena saṁyuge.
9. sāmetam pārthivam kṣatram vārāṇasyām nadīsutaḥ
kanyārtham āhvayat vīraḥ rathena ekena saṃyuge
9. nadīsutaḥ vīraḥ vārāṇasyām kanyārtham sāmetam
pārthivam kṣatram ekena rathena saṃyuge āhvayat
9. The hero, Bhishma (the son of the river), challenged the assembled earthly warriors in Varanasi to battle for the sake of a maiden, fighting with a single chariot.
येन चोग्रायुधो राजा चक्रवर्ती दुरासदः ।
दग्धः शस्त्रप्रतापेन स मया युधि घातितः ॥१०॥
10. yena cogrāyudho rājā cakravartī durāsadaḥ ,
dagdhaḥ śastrapratāpena sa mayā yudhi ghātitaḥ.
10. yena ca ugrāyudhaḥ rājā cakravartī durāsadaḥ
dagdhaḥ śastrapratāpena sa mayā yudhi ghātitaḥ
10. ca durāsadaḥ cakravartī rājā ugrāyudhaḥ yena śastrapratāpena dagdhaḥ,
sa mayā yudhi ghātitaḥ
10. And the formidable emperor King Ugrāyudha, who was consumed by the might of (my) weapons, was indeed slain by me in battle.
स्वयं मृत्युं रक्षमाणः पाञ्चाल्यं यः शिखण्डिनम् ।
न बाणैः पातयामास सोऽर्जुनेन निपातितः ॥११॥
11. svayaṁ mṛtyuṁ rakṣamāṇaḥ pāñcālyaṁ yaḥ śikhaṇḍinam ,
na bāṇaiḥ pātayāmāsa so'rjunena nipātitaḥ.
11. svayam mṛtyum rakṣamāṇaḥ pāñcālyam yaḥ śikhaṇḍinam
na bāṇaiḥ pātayām āsa saḥ arjunena nipātitaḥ
11. yaḥ pāñcālyam śikhaṇḍinam svayam mṛtyum rakṣamāṇaḥ bāṇaiḥ na pātayām āsa,
saḥ arjunena nipātitaḥ
11. He who, upholding his vow regarding his own death, did not strike down Shikhandi, the Pāñcāla, with arrows, was subsequently slain by Arjuna.
यदैनं पतितं भूमावपश्यं रुधिरोक्षितम् ।
तदैवाविशदत्युग्रो ज्वरो मे मुनिसत्तम ।
येन संवर्धिता बाला येन स्म परिरक्षिताः ॥१२॥
12. yadainaṁ patitaṁ bhūmāvapaśyaṁ rudhirokṣitam ,
tadaivāviśadatyugro jvaro me munisattama ,
yena saṁvardhitā bālā yena sma parirakṣitāḥ.
12. yadā enam patitam bhūmau apaśyam
rudhirokṣitam tadā eva āviśat atyugraḥ
jvaraḥ me munisattama yena
saṃvardhitāḥ bālāḥ yena sma parirakṣitāḥ
12. munisattama,
yadā enam rudhirokṣitam patitam bhūmau apaśyam,
tadā eva atyugraḥ jvaraḥ me āviśat.
yena bālāḥ saṃvardhitāḥ,
yena sma parirakṣitāḥ.
12. O best of sages, when I saw myself fallen on the ground, drenched in blood, then indeed an extremely terrible fever seized me. I, by whom the children had been raised, and by whom they had been protected.
स मया राज्यलुब्धेन पापेन गुरुघातिना ।
अल्पकालस्य राज्यस्य कृते मूढेन घातितः ॥१३॥
13. sa mayā rājyalubdhena pāpena gurughātinā ,
alpakālasya rājyasya kṛte mūḍhena ghātitaḥ.
13. sa mayā rājyalubdhena pāpena gurughātinā
alpakālasya rājyasya kṛte mūḍhena ghātitaḥ
13. sa mayā rājyalubdhena pāpena gurughātinā
alpakālasya rājyasya kṛte mūḍhena ghātitaḥ
13. He was killed by me, a sinful fool, who was greedy for a short-lived kingdom and guilty of killing my own teacher (guru).
आचार्यश्च महेष्वासः सर्वपार्थिवपूजितः ।
अभिगम्य रणे मिथ्या पापेनोक्तः सुतं प्रति ॥१४॥
14. ācāryaśca maheṣvāsaḥ sarvapārthivapūjitaḥ ,
abhigamya raṇe mithyā pāpenoktaḥ sutaṁ prati.
14. ācāryaḥ ca maheṣvāsaḥ sarvapārthivapūjitaḥ
abhigamya raṇe mithyā pāpena uktaḥ sutam prati
14. ca ācāryaḥ maheṣvāsaḥ sarvapārthivapūjitaḥ
pāpena raṇe abhigamya sutaṃ prati mithyā uktaḥ
14. And the teacher (guru), a great archer honored by all kings, was approached in battle by the sinful one and falsely told something regarding his son.
तन्मे दहति गात्राणि यन्मां गुरुरभाषत ।
सत्यवाक्यो हि राजंस्त्वं यदि जीवति मे सुतः ।
सत्यं मा मर्शयन्विप्रो मयि तत्परिपृष्टवान् ॥१५॥
15. tanme dahati gātrāṇi yanmāṁ gururabhāṣata ,
satyavākyo hi rājaṁstvaṁ yadi jīvati me sutaḥ ,
satyaṁ mā marśayanvipro mayi tatparipṛṣṭavān.
15. tat me dahati gātrāṇi yat mām guruḥ
abhāṣata satyavākyaḥ hi rājan tvam
yadi jīvati me sutaḥ satyam mā
marśayan vipraḥ mayi tat paripṛṣṭavān
15. yat guruḥ mām abhāṣata tat me gātrāṇi
dahati hi rājan tvaṃ satyavākyaḥ
yadi me sutaḥ jīvati vipraḥ satyam
mā marśayan mayi tat paripṛṣṭavān
15. The words my teacher (guru) spoke to me – 'Indeed, O King, you are truthful if my son is alive' – that burns my very limbs. The Brahmin (vipra), not tolerating any evasion of the truth, questioned me fully about that.
कुञ्जरं चान्तरं कृत्वा मिथ्योपचरितं मया ।
सुभृशं राज्यलुब्धेन पापेन गुरुघातिना ॥१६॥
16. kuñjaraṁ cāntaraṁ kṛtvā mithyopacaritaṁ mayā ,
subhṛśaṁ rājyalubdhena pāpena gurughātinā.
16. kuñjaram ca antaram kṛtvā mithyā upacaritam
mayā subhṛśam rājyalubdhena pāpena gurughātinā
16. ca mayā subhṛśam rājyalubdhena pāpena gurughātinā
kuñjaram antaram kṛtvā mithyā upacaritam
16. And by me, a greatly sinful, teacher-killing person (guru), who was exceedingly greedy for a kingdom, a false statement was uttered, using the (death of an) elephant as a pretext.
सत्यकञ्चुकमास्थाय मयोक्तो गुरुराहवे ।
अश्वत्थामा हत इति कुञ्जरे विनिपातिते ।
कान्नु लोकान्गमिष्यामि कृत्वा तत्कर्म दारुणम् ॥१७॥
17. satyakañcukamāsthāya mayokto gururāhave ,
aśvatthāmā hata iti kuñjare vinipātite ,
kānnu lokāngamiṣyāmi kṛtvā tatkarma dāruṇam.
17. satyakañcukam āsthāya mayā uktaḥ
guruḥ āhave aśvatthāmā hataḥ iti
kuñjare vinipātite kān nu lokān
gamiṣyāmi kṛtvā tat karma dāruṇam
17. mayā āhave satyakañcukam āsthāya
guruḥ aśvatthāmā hataḥ iti uktaḥ
kuñjare vinipātite tat dāruṇam
karma kṛtvā kān nu lokān gamiṣyāmi
17. Having adopted a semblance of truth, I declared to the preceptor (guru) in battle, 'Aśvatthāmā is slain,' after an elephant had been killed. Which worlds (loka) shall I reach after committing that dreadful action (karma)?
अघातयं च यत्कर्णं समरेष्वपलायिनम् ।
ज्येष्ठं भ्रातरमत्युग्रं को मत्तः पापकृत्तमः ॥१८॥
18. aghātayaṁ ca yatkarṇaṁ samareṣvapalāyinam ,
jyeṣṭhaṁ bhrātaramatyugraṁ ko mattaḥ pāpakṛttamaḥ.
18. aghātayam ca yat karṇam samareṣu apalāyinam
jyeṣṭham bhrātaram atyugram kaḥ mattaḥ pāpakṛttamaḥ
18. ca yat samareṣu apalāyinam jyeṣṭham atyugram
bhrātaram karṇam aghātayam kaḥ mattaḥ pāpakṛttamaḥ
18. And I caused the death of Karṇa, my elder and exceedingly formidable brother, who never retreated in battles. Who is more steeped in sin than I?
अभिमन्युं च यद्बालं जातं सिंहमिवाद्रिषु ।
प्रावेशयमहं लुब्धो वाहिनीं द्रोणपालिताम् ॥१९॥
19. abhimanyuṁ ca yadbālaṁ jātaṁ siṁhamivādriṣu ,
prāveśayamahaṁ lubdho vāhinīṁ droṇapālitām.
19. abhimanyum ca yat bālam jātam siṃham iva adriṣu
prāveśayam aham lubdhaḥ vāhinīm droṇapālitām
19. ca yat adriṣu jātam siṃham iva bālam abhimanyum
aham lubdhaḥ droṇapālitām vāhinīm prāveśayam
19. And I, out of delusion, sent that boy Abhimanyu, who was like a lion born in the mountains, into the army guarded by Drona.
तदाप्रभृति बीभत्सुं न शक्नोमि निरीक्षितुम् ।
कृष्णं च पुण्डरीकाक्षं किल्बिषी भ्रूणहा यथा ॥२०॥
20. tadāprabhṛti bībhatsuṁ na śaknomi nirīkṣitum ,
kṛṣṇaṁ ca puṇḍarīkākṣaṁ kilbiṣī bhrūṇahā yathā.
20. tadāprabhṛti bībhatsum na śaknomi nirīkṣitum
kṛṣṇam ca puṇḍarīkākṣam kilbiṣī bhrūṇahā yathā
20. tadāprabhṛti kilbiṣī bhrūṇahā yathā (aham) bībhatsum
(mām) kṛṣṇam ca puṇḍarīkākṣam nirīkṣitum na śaknomi
20. From that time onwards, I, the despicable one, am unable to look upon myself, nor upon Kṛṣṇa, the lotus-eyed, just as a sinner (kilbiṣī) or an embryo-killer (bhrūṇahā) cannot.
द्रौपदीं चाप्यदुःखार्हां पञ्चपुत्रविनाकृताम् ।
शोचामि पृथिवीं हीनां पञ्चभिः पर्वतैरिव ॥२१॥
21. draupadīṁ cāpyaduḥkhārhāṁ pañcaputravinākṛtām ,
śocāmi pṛthivīṁ hīnāṁ pañcabhiḥ parvatairiva.
21. Draupadīm ca api aduḥkhārhām pañcaputravinākṛtām
śocāmi pṛthivīm hīnām pañcabhiḥ parvataiḥ iva
21. api ca,
aduḥkhārhām pañcaputravinākṛtām Draupadīm,
pṛthivīm pañcabhiḥ parvataiḥ hīnām iva,
śocāmi.
21. I lament for Draupadi, who, though undeserving of sorrow, has been deprived of her five sons. She is like the earth bereft of five mountains.
सोऽहमागस्करः पापः पृथिवीनाशकारकः ।
आसीन एवमेवेदं शोषयिष्ये कलेवरम् ॥२२॥
22. so'hamāgaskaraḥ pāpaḥ pṛthivīnāśakārakaḥ ,
āsīna evamevedaṁ śoṣayiṣye kalevaram.
22. saḥ aham āgaskaraḥ pāpaḥ pṛthivīnāśakārakaḥ
āsīnaḥ evam eva idam śoṣayiṣye kalevaram
22. saḥ aham pāpaḥ āgaskaraḥ pṛthivīnāśakārakaḥ evam eva āsīnaḥ idam kalevaram śoṣayiṣye.
22. I, who am this sinful offender and destroyer of the world, will waste away this body by remaining seated just like this.
प्रायोपविष्टं जानीध्वमद्य मां गुरुघातिनम् ।
जातिष्वन्यास्वपि यथा न भवेयं कुलान्तकृत् ॥२३॥
23. prāyopaviṣṭaṁ jānīdhvamadya māṁ gurughātinam ,
jātiṣvanyāsvapi yathā na bhaveyaṁ kulāntakṛt.
23. prāyopaviṣṭam jānīdhvam adya mām gurughātinam
jātiṣu anyāsu api yathā na bhaveyam kulāntakṛt
23. adya,
gurughātinam mām prāyopaviṣṭam jānīdhvam yathā anyāsu jātiṣu api kulāntakṛt na bhaveyam.
23. Today, understand that I, the killer of elders (guru), am resolved to fast unto death (prāyopaviṣṭam), so that I may not become a destroyer of families (kulāntakṛt) even in future existences (saṃsāra).
न भोक्ष्ये न च पानीयमुपयोक्ष्ये कथंचन ।
शोषयिष्ये प्रियान्प्राणानिहस्थोऽहं तपोधन ॥२४॥
24. na bhokṣye na ca pānīyamupayokṣye kathaṁcana ,
śoṣayiṣye priyānprāṇānihastho'haṁ tapodhana.
24. na bhokṣye na ca pānīyam upayokṣye kathaṃcana
śoṣayiṣye priyān prāṇān iha sthaḥ aham tapodhana
24. na bhokṣye,
ca na kathaṃcana pānīyam upayokṣye aham iha sthaḥ tapodhana priyān prāṇān śoṣayiṣye.
24. I will not eat, nor will I consume water (pānīyam) by any means. Remaining here, I, whose only wealth is asceticism (tapas), will cause my dear vital breaths (prāṇān) to waste away.
यथेष्टं गम्यतां काममनुजाने प्रसाद्य वः ।
सर्वे मामनुजानीत त्यक्ष्यामीदं कलेवरम् ॥२५॥
25. yatheṣṭaṁ gamyatāṁ kāmamanujāne prasādya vaḥ ,
sarve māmanujānīta tyakṣyāmīdaṁ kalevaram.
25. yathā iṣṭam gamyatām kāmam anujāne prasādya vaḥ
sarve mām anujānīta tyakṣyāmi idam kalevaram
25. yathā iṣṭam kāmam gamyatām vaḥ prasādya anujāne
sarve mām anujānīta idam kalevaram tyakṣyāmi
25. You may go wherever you wish. I grant you permission, having appeased you. All of you, please permit me; I will abandon this body.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तमेवंवादिनं पार्थं बन्धुशोकेन विह्वलम् ।
मैवमित्यब्रवीद्व्यासो निगृह्य मुनिसत्तमः ॥२६॥
26. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tamevaṁvādinaṁ pārthaṁ bandhuśokena vihvalam ,
maivamityabravīdvyāso nigṛhya munisattamaḥ.
26. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tam evamvādinam pārtham bandhuśokena
vihvalam mā evam iti abravīt vyāsaḥ nigṛhya munisattamaḥ
26. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca munisattamaḥ vyāsaḥ bandhuśokena
vihvalam tam evamvādinam pārtham nigṛhya mā evam iti abravīt
26. Vaiśampāyana said: Vyāsa, the best among sages, having restrained Pārtha (Arjuna), who was speaking thus and was overwhelmed by grief (śoka) for his relatives, said, "Do not do that!"
अतिवेलं महाराज न शोकं कर्तुमर्हसि ।
पुनरुक्तं प्रवक्ष्यामि दिष्टमेतदिति प्रभो ॥२७॥
27. ativelaṁ mahārāja na śokaṁ kartumarhasi ,
punaruktaṁ pravakṣyāmi diṣṭametaditi prabho.
27. ativelam mahārāja na śokam kartum arhasi
punaruktam pravakṣyāmi diṣṭam etat iti prabho
27. mahārāja prabho ativelam śokam kartum na
arhasi etat diṣṭam iti punaruktam pravakṣyāmi
27. O great king, you ought not to grieve (śoka) excessively. O lord, I will repeat (what has been said before): "This is destiny."
संयोगा विप्रयोगाश्च जातानां प्राणिनां ध्रुवम् ।
बुद्बुदा इव तोयेषु भवन्ति न भवन्ति च ॥२८॥
28. saṁyogā viprayogāśca jātānāṁ prāṇināṁ dhruvam ,
budbudā iva toyeṣu bhavanti na bhavanti ca.
28. saṃyogāḥ viprayogāḥ ca jātānām prāṇinām dhruvam
budbudāḥ iva toyeṣu bhavanti na bhavanti ca
28. jātānām prāṇinām saṃyogāḥ ca viprayogāḥ dhruvam
toyeṣu budbudāḥ iva bhavanti ca na bhavanti
28. Unions and separations are certain for all born beings. Like bubbles in water, they come into existence and cease to exist.
सर्वे क्षयान्ता निचयाः पतनान्ताः समुच्छ्रयाः ।
संयोगा विप्रयोगान्ता मरणान्तं हि जीवितम् ॥२९॥
29. sarve kṣayāntā nicayāḥ patanāntāḥ samucchrayāḥ ,
saṁyogā viprayogāntā maraṇāntaṁ hi jīvitam.

29. All accumulations eventually lead to an end. All ascensions ultimately lead to a fall. All unions inevitably result in separation. And certainly, life itself culminates in death.
सुखं दुःखान्तमालस्यं दाक्ष्यं दुःखं सुखोदयम् ।
भूतिः श्रीर्ह्रीर्धृतिः सिद्धिर्नादक्षे निवसन्त्युत ॥३०॥
30. sukhaṁ duḥkhāntamālasyaṁ dākṣyaṁ duḥkhaṁ sukhodayam ,
bhūtiḥ śrīrhrīrdhṛtiḥ siddhirnādakṣe nivasantyuta.
30. sukham duḥkhāntam ālasyam dākṣyam duḥkham sukhodayam
bhūtiḥ śrīḥ hrīḥ dhṛtiḥ siddhiḥ na adakṣe nivasanti uta

30. Happiness (sukha) leads to sorrow (duḥkha). Laziness (ālasyam) is itself sorrow (duḥkha), while skill (dākṣyam) brings forth happiness (sukhodayam). Prosperity (bhūti), wealth (śrī), modesty (hrī), fortitude (dhṛti), and success (siddhi) certainly do not dwell in an unskillful person (adakṣa).
नालं सुखाय सुहृदो नालं दुःखाय दुर्हृदः ।
न च प्रज्ञालमर्थेभ्यो न सुखेभ्योऽप्यलं धनम् ॥३१॥
31. nālaṁ sukhāya suhṛdo nālaṁ duḥkhāya durhṛdaḥ ,
na ca prajñālamarthebhyo na sukhebhyo'pyalaṁ dhanam.
31. na alam sukhāya suhṛdaḥ na alam duḥkhāya durhṛdaḥ na ca
prajñā alam arthebhyaḥ na sukhebhyas api alam dhanam
31. suhṛdaḥ na alam sukhāya.

ca prajñā na alam arthebhyaḥ.
api dhanam na alam sukhebhyas.
31. Good friends (suhṛdaḥ) are not sufficient to bring about happiness (sukha). Bad friends (durhṛdaḥ) are not sufficient to cause sorrow (duḥkha). Neither is wisdom (prajñā) alone enough for achieving objectives (artha), nor is wealth (dhana) sufficient for happiness (sukha).
यथा सृष्टोऽसि कौन्तेय धात्रा कर्मसु तत्कुरु ।
अत एव हि सिद्धिस्ते नेशस्त्वमात्मना नृप ॥३२॥
32. yathā sṛṣṭo'si kaunteya dhātrā karmasu tatkuru ,
ata eva hi siddhiste neśastvamātmanā nṛpa.
32. yathā sṛṣṭaḥ asi kaunteya dhātrā karmasu tat kuru
atas eva hi siddhiḥ te na īśaḥ tvam ātmanā nṛpa
32. kaunteya nṛpa! yathā dhātrā karmasu sṛṣṭaḥ asi,
tat kuru.
ata eva hi te siddhiḥ (bhavati).
tvam ātmanā na īśaḥ (asi).
32. O Kaunteya (Arjuna), perform (kuru) your duties (karma) as you were created by the Creator (dhātṛ) for them. Indeed, only from this comes your success (siddhi), O King (nṛpa), for you are not the master (īśa) of yourself (ātmanā).
