ततोऽहं समनुज्ञाप्य कालीं सत्यवतीं तदा ।
मन्त्रिणश्च द्विजांश्चैव तथैव च पुरोहितान् ।
समनुज्ञासिषं कन्यां ज्येष्ठामम्बां नराधिप ॥१॥

tato'haṁ samanujñāpya kālīṁ satyavatīṁ tadā ,

ca mantriṇaḥ ca eva dvijān ca eva purohitān samanujñāpya,
jyeṣṭhām kanyām ambām samanujñāsiṣam.
1. Bhishma said: O king of men, then I, having obtained permission from Kāli and Satyavatī, and also from the ministers, the twice-born (dvija), and the priests, then gave permission to the eldest maiden, Ambā.
अनुज्ञाता ययौ सा तु कन्या शाल्वपतेः पुरम् ।
वृद्धैर्द्विजातिभिर्गुप्ता धात्र्या चानुगता तदा ।
अतीत्य च तमध्वानमाससाद नराधिपम् ॥२॥
2. anujñātā yayau sā tu kanyā śālvapateḥ puram ,
vṛddhairdvijātibhirguptā dhātryā cānugatā tadā ,
atītya ca tamadhvānamāsasāda narādhipam.

2. Having received permission, that maiden then went to the city of the lord of Śālva. She was protected by elderly Brahmins (dvijāti) and accompanied by her nurse. Having traversed that path, she reached the king (narādhipa).
सा तमासाद्य राजानं शाल्वं वचनमब्रवीत् ।
आगताहं महाबाहो त्वामुद्दिश्य महाद्युते ॥३॥
3. sā tamāsādya rājānaṁ śālvaṁ vacanamabravīt ,
āgatāhaṁ mahābāho tvāmuddiśya mahādyute.
3. sā tam āsādya rājānam śālvaṃ vacanam abravīt
| āgatā aham mahābāho tvām uddiśya mahādyute
3. sā tam rājānam śālvaṃ āsādya vacanam abravīt (sā uvāca)
mahābāho mahādyute aham tvām uddiśya āgatā (asmi)
3. Having approached that King Śālva, she spoke these words: 'O mighty-armed one (mahābāho), O greatly effulgent one (mahādyute), I have come here specifically for you.'
तामब्रवीच्छाल्वपतिः स्मयन्निव विशां पते ।
त्वयान्यपूर्वया नाहं भार्यार्थी वरवर्णिनि ॥४॥
4. tāmabravīcchālvapatiḥ smayanniva viśāṁ pate ,
tvayānyapūrvayā nāhaṁ bhāryārthī varavarṇini.
4. tām abravīt śālvapatiḥ smayan iva viśām pate |
tvayā anyapūrvayā na aham bhāryārthī varavarṇini
4. śālvapatiḥ smayan iva viśām pate tām abravīt
varavarṇini tvayā anyapūrvayā aham bhāryārthī na (asmi)
4. The lord of Śālva (śālvapati) said to her, as if smiling, 'O lord of the people (viśāmpate)! O lady of beautiful complexion (varavarṇini), I am not seeking a wife in you, who have previously been betrothed to another.'
गच्छ भद्रे पुनस्तत्र सकाशं भारतस्य वै ।
नाहमिच्छामि भीष्मेण गृहीतां त्वां प्रसह्य वै ॥५॥
5. gaccha bhadre punastatra sakāśaṁ bhāratasya vai ,
nāhamicchāmi bhīṣmeṇa gṛhītāṁ tvāṁ prasahya vai.
5. gaccha bhadre punaḥ tatra sakāśam bhāratasya vai |
na aham icchāmi bhīṣmeṇa gṛhītām tvām prasahya vai
5. bhadre punaḥ tatra bhāratasya sakāśam gaccha vai
aham bhīṣmeṇa prasahya gṛhītām tvām na icchāmi vai
5. Go, O good lady (bhadre), return there to the presence of Bhārata (Bhīṣma) indeed. I do not desire you, who were taken by force by Bhīṣma.
त्वं हि निर्जित्य भीष्मेण नीता प्रीतिमती तदा ।
परामृश्य महायुद्धे निर्जित्य पृथिवीपतीन् ।
नाहं त्वय्यन्यपूर्वायां भार्यार्थी वरवर्णिनि ॥६॥
6. tvaṁ hi nirjitya bhīṣmeṇa nītā prītimatī tadā ,
parāmṛśya mahāyuddhe nirjitya pṛthivīpatīn ,
nāhaṁ tvayyanyapūrvāyāṁ bhāryārthī varavarṇini.
6. tvam hi nirjitya bhīṣmeṇa nītā
prītimatī tadā | parāmṛśya mahāyuddhe
nirjitya pṛthivīpatīn | na aham tvayi
anyapūrvāyām bhāryārthī varavarṇini
6. varavarṇini! bhīṣmeṇa mahāyuddhe
pṛthivīpatīn nirjitya parāmṛśya
tvam hi tadā prītimatī nītā anyapūrvāyām
tvayi aham bhāryārthī na asmi
6. Indeed, you were taken by Bhishma, appearing pleased at that time, after he had seized you by force, having conquered the kings in the great war. O lady of beautiful complexion, I am not desirous of a wife in you, as you previously belonged to another.
कथमस्मद्विधो राजा परपूर्वां प्रवेशयेत् ।
नारीं विदितविज्ञानः परेषां धर्ममादिशन् ।
यथेष्टं गम्यतां भद्रे मा ते कालोऽत्यगादयम् ॥७॥
7. kathamasmadvidho rājā parapūrvāṁ praveśayet ,
nārīṁ viditavijñānaḥ pareṣāṁ dharmamādiśan ,
yatheṣṭaṁ gamyatāṁ bhadre mā te kālo'tyagādayam.
7. katham asmatvidhaḥ rājā parapūrvām
praveśayet | nārīm viditavijñānaḥ
pareṣām dharmam ādiśan | yatheṣṭam gamyatām
bhadre mā te kālaḥ atyagāt ayam
7. katham asmatvidhaḥ rājā viditavijñānaḥ
pareṣām dharmam ādiśan parapūrvām
nārīm praveśayet? bhadre! yatheṣṭam
gamyatām te ayam kālaḥ mā atyagāt
7. How can a king like me, who possesses discernment and instructs others on their duties (dharma), admit a woman who previously belonged to another? O respectable lady, go wherever you wish. Do not let this time of yours be wasted.
अम्बा तमब्रवीद्राजन्ननङ्गशरपीडिता ।
मैवं वद महीपाल नैतदेवं कथंचन ॥८॥
8. ambā tamabravīdrājannanaṅgaśarapīḍitā ,
maivaṁ vada mahīpāla naitadevaṁ kathaṁcana.
8. ambā tam abravīt rājan anañgaśarapīḍitā | mā
evam vada mahīpāla na etat evam kathañcana
8. anañgaśarapīḍitā ambā tam abravīt: "rājan! mahīpāla!
evam mā vada etat evam kathañcana na [asti] "
8. Amba, tormented by the arrows of the love god (Anaṅga), said to him: 'O King, do not speak thus, O protector of the earth! This is certainly not the case at all.'
नास्मि प्रीतिमती नीता भीष्मेणामित्रकर्शन ।
बलान्नीतास्मि रुदती विद्राव्य पृथिवीपतीन् ॥९॥
9. nāsmi prītimatī nītā bhīṣmeṇāmitrakarśana ,
balānnītāsmi rudatī vidrāvya pṛthivīpatīn.
9. na asmi prītimatī nītā bhīṣmeṇa amitrakarśana
| balāt nītā asmi rudatī vidrāvya pṛthivīpatīn
9. amitrakarśana! bhīṣmeṇa prītimatī nītā na asmi
balāt pṛthivīpatīn vidrāvya rudatī nītā asmi
9. O tormentor of foes, I was not taken by Bhishma feeling pleased. I was taken by force, weeping, after he had routed the kings of the earth.
भजस्व मां शाल्वपते भक्तां बालामनागसम् ।
भक्तानां हि परित्यागो न धर्मेषु प्रशस्यते ॥१०॥
10. bhajasva māṁ śālvapate bhaktāṁ bālāmanāgasam ,
bhaktānāṁ hi parityāgo na dharmeṣu praśasyate.
10. bhajasva mām śālvapate bhaktām bālām anāgasam
bhaktānām hi parityāgaḥ na dharmeṣu praśasyate
10. śālvapate mām bhaktām bālām anāgasam bhajasva
hi bhaktānām parityāgaḥ dharmeṣu na praśasyate
10. O Lord of Salva, please accept me, your devoted and innocent young woman. Indeed, the abandonment of loyal individuals is not praised in the natural laws (dharma).
साहमामन्त्र्य गाङ्गेयं समरेष्वनिवर्तिनम् ।
अनुज्ञाता च तेनैव तवैव गृहमागता ॥११॥
11. sāhamāmantrya gāṅgeyaṁ samareṣvanivartinam ,
anujñātā ca tenaiva tavaiva gṛhamāgatā.
11. sā aham āmantrya gāṅgeyam samareṣu anivartinam
anujñātā ca tena eva tava eva gṛham āgatā
11. sā aham āmantrya gāṅgeyam samareṣu anivartinam
ca tena eva anujñātā tava eva gṛham āgatā
11. Therefore, I approached Gaṅgeya (Bhishma), who never retreats in battles, and having been permitted by him, I have now come to your house.
न स भीष्मो महाबाहुर्मामिच्छति विशां पते ।
भ्रातृहेतोः समारम्भो भीष्मस्येति श्रुतं मया ॥१२॥
12. na sa bhīṣmo mahābāhurmāmicchati viśāṁ pate ,
bhrātṛhetoḥ samārambho bhīṣmasyeti śrutaṁ mayā.
12. na sa bhīṣmaḥ mahābāhuḥ mām icchati viśām pate
bhrātṛhetoḥ samārambhaḥ bhīṣmasya iti śrutam mayā
12. viśām pate sa bhīṣmaḥ mahābāhuḥ mām na icchati
mayā bhīṣmasya samārambhaḥ bhrātṛhetoḥ iti śrutam
12. O King, that mighty-armed Bhishma does not desire me. I have heard that Bhishma's enterprise was for the sake of his brother.
भगिन्यौ मम ये नीते अम्बिकाम्बालिके नृप ।
प्रादाद्विचित्रवीर्याय गाङ्गेयो हि यवीयसे ॥१३॥
13. bhaginyau mama ye nīte ambikāmbālike nṛpa ,
prādādvicitravīryāya gāṅgeyo hi yavīyase.
13. bhaginyau mama ye nīte ambikāmbālike nṛpa
prādāt vicitravīryāya gāṅgeyaḥ hi yavīyase
13. nṛpa hi gāṅgeyaḥ mama ye nīte ambikāmbālike
bhaginyau yavīyase vicitravīryāya prādāt
13. O King, Bhishma indeed gave my two sisters, Ambika and Ambalika, whom he had captured, to the younger Vichitravirya.
यथा शाल्वपते नान्यं नरं ध्यामि कथंचन ।
त्वामृते पुरुषव्याघ्र तथा मूर्धानमालभे ॥१४॥
14. yathā śālvapate nānyaṁ naraṁ dhyāmi kathaṁcana ,
tvāmṛte puruṣavyāghra tathā mūrdhānamālabhe.
14. yathā śālvapate na anyaṃ naraṃ dhyāmi kathaṃcana
tvām ṛte puruṣavyāghra tathā mūrdhānam ālabhe
14. śālvapate puruṣavyāghra yathā tvām ṛte na anyaṃ
naraṃ kathaṃcana dhyāmi tathā mūrdhānam ālabhe
14. O King of Salva, O best among men, just as I never contemplate any other man except you in any way, so I solemnly swear by touching my head.
न चान्यपूर्वा राजेन्द्र त्वामहं समुपस्थिता ।
सत्यं ब्रवीमि शाल्वैतत्सत्येनात्मानमालभे ॥१५॥
15. na cānyapūrvā rājendra tvāmahaṁ samupasthitā ,
satyaṁ bravīmi śālvaitatsatyenātmānamālabhe.
15. na ca anyapūrvā rājendra tvām aham samupasthitā
satyam bravīmi śālva etat satyena ātmānam ālabhe
15. ca rājendra aham anyapūrvā na tvām samupasthitā
śālva etat satyam bravīmi satyena ātmānam ālabhe
15. And, O King, I, who have never belonged to another, have come before you. I speak this truth, O Salva, and by this truth, I swear by my (ātman) very being.
भजस्व मां विशालाक्ष स्वयं कन्यामुपस्थिताम् ।
अनन्यपूर्वां राजेन्द्र त्वत्प्रसादाभिकाङ्क्षिणीम् ॥१६॥
16. bhajasva māṁ viśālākṣa svayaṁ kanyāmupasthitām ,
ananyapūrvāṁ rājendra tvatprasādābhikāṅkṣiṇīm.
16. bhajasva mām viśālākṣa svayam kanyām upasthitām
ananyapūrvām rājendra tvatprasādābhikāṅkṣiṇīm
16. viśālākṣa rājendra svayam upasthitām ananyapūrvām
tvatprasādābhikāṅkṣiṇīm kanyām mām bhajasva
16. O broad-eyed one, O King, accept me, a maiden who has presented herself (to you) of her own accord, who has never belonged to another, and who longs for your grace.
तामेवं भाषमाणां तु शाल्वः काशिपतेः सुताम् ।
अत्यजद्भरतश्रेष्ठ त्वचं जीर्णामिवोरगः ॥१७॥
17. tāmevaṁ bhāṣamāṇāṁ tu śālvaḥ kāśipateḥ sutām ,
atyajadbharataśreṣṭha tvacaṁ jīrṇāmivoragaḥ.
17. tām evam bhāṣamāṇām tu śālvaḥ kāśipateḥ sutām
atyajat bharataśreṣṭha tvacam jīrṇām iva uragaḥ
17. bharataśreṣṭha tu śālvaḥ evaṃ bhāṣamāṇām kāśipateḥ
sutām tām uragaḥ jīrṇām tvacam iva atyajat
17. But, O best of Bharatas, Salva rejected the daughter of the King of Kashi, who was speaking thus, just as a snake sheds its old skin.
एवं बहुविधैर्वाक्यैर्याच्यमानस्तयानघ ।
नाश्रद्दधच्छाल्वपतिः कन्याया भरतर्षभ ॥१८॥
18. evaṁ bahuvidhairvākyairyācyamānastayānagha ,
nāśraddadhacchālvapatiḥ kanyāyā bharatarṣabha.
18. evam bahuvidhaiḥ vākyaiḥ yācyamānaḥ tayā anagha
na aśraddadhat śālvapatiḥ kanyāyāḥ bharatarṣabha
18. anagha bharatarṣabha,
evam tayā bahuvidhaiḥ vākyaiḥ yācyamānaḥ,
śālvapatiḥ kanyāyāḥ na aśraddadhat.
18. O sinless one (anagha), O best of Bharatas (bharatarṣabha), even though he was thus implored by her with many kinds of words, the lord of Śālva did not believe the maiden.
ततः सा मन्युनाविष्टा ज्येष्ठा काशिपतेः सुता ।
अब्रवीत्साश्रुनयना बाष्पविह्वलया गिरा ॥१९॥
19. tataḥ sā manyunāviṣṭā jyeṣṭhā kāśipateḥ sutā ,
abravītsāśrunayanā bāṣpavihvalayā girā.
19. tataḥ sā manyunā āviṣṭā jyeṣṭhā kāśipateḥ
sutā abravīt sāśrunayanā bāṣpavihvalayā girā
19. tataḥ,
manyunā āviṣṭā,
sā jyeṣṭhā kāśipateḥ sutā sāśrunayanā bāṣpavihvalayā girā abravīt.
19. Then, the eldest daughter (sutā) of the lord of Kāśi, overcome with anger, with tearful eyes, spoke with a voice trembling with tears.
त्वया त्यक्ता गमिष्यामि यत्र यत्र विशां पते ।
तत्र मे सन्तु गतयः सन्तः सत्यं यथाब्रुवम् ॥२०॥
20. tvayā tyaktā gamiṣyāmi yatra yatra viśāṁ pate ,
tatra me santu gatayaḥ santaḥ satyaṁ yathābruvam.
20. tvayā tyaktā gamiṣyāmi yatra yatra viśām pate
tatra me santu gatayaḥ santaḥ satyam yathā abruvam
20. viśām pate,
tvayā tyaktā (aham) yatra yatra gamiṣyāmi.
tatra me gatayaḥ santu.
santaḥ,
yathā (aham) satyam abruvam.
20. O lord of men (viśām pate), abandoned by you, I shall go wherever I may. May my paths be truthful, O virtuous ones, just as I spoke the truth.
एवं संभाषमाणां तु नृशंसः शाल्वराट्तदा ।
पर्यत्यजत कौरव्य करुणं परिदेवतीम् ॥२१॥
21. evaṁ saṁbhāṣamāṇāṁ tu nṛśaṁsaḥ śālvarāṭtadā ,
paryatyajata kauravya karuṇaṁ paridevatīm.
21. evam saṃbhāṣamāṇām tu nṛśaṃsaḥ śālvarāṭ tadā
paryatyajata kauravya karuṇam paridevatīm
21. kauravya,
tu tadā nṛśaṃsaḥ śālvarāṭ evam saṃbhāṣamāṇām karuṇam paridevatīm paryatyajata.
21. But O descendant of Kuru (kauravya), the cruel king of Śālva then abandoned her who was thus speaking and lamenting piteously.
गच्छ गच्छेति तां शाल्वः पुनः पुनरभाषत ।
बिभेमि भीष्मात्सुश्रोणि त्वं च भीष्मपरिग्रहः ॥२२॥
22. gaccha gaccheti tāṁ śālvaḥ punaḥ punarabhāṣata ,
bibhemi bhīṣmātsuśroṇi tvaṁ ca bhīṣmaparigrahaḥ.
22. gaccha gaccha iti tām śālvaḥ punaḥ punaḥ abhāṣata
bibhemi bhīṣmāt suśroṇi tvam ca bhīṣmaparigrahaḥ
22. śālvaḥ tām punaḥ punaḥ "gaccha,
gaccha!" iti abhāṣata.
"suśroṇi,
bhīṣmāt bibhemi,
ca tvam bhīṣmaparigrahaḥ.
"
22. Salva repeatedly told her, 'Go, go!' (adding), 'O beautiful-hipped one, I fear Bhishma, and you have been taken by Bhishma.'
एवमुक्ता तु सा तेन शाल्वेनादीर्घदर्शिना ।
निश्चक्राम पुराद्दीना रुदती कुररी यथा ॥२३॥
23. evamuktā tu sā tena śālvenādīrghadarśinā ,
niścakrāma purāddīnā rudatī kurarī yathā.
23. evam uktā tu sā tena śālvena adīrghadarśinā
niścakrāma purāt dīnā rudatī kurarī yathā
23. tena adīrghadarśinā śālvena evam uktā tu sā dīnā rudatī kurarī yathā purāt niścakrāma.
23. But she, having been addressed in this manner by that short-sighted Salva, left the city distressed, weeping like a female osprey.
