वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततो द्रुपदमासाद्य भारद्वाजः प्रतापवान् ।
अब्रवीत्पार्षतं राजन्सखायं विद्धि मामिति ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tato drupadamāsādya bhāradvājaḥ pratāpavān ,
abravītpārṣataṁ rājansakhāyaṁ viddhi māmiti.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: "Then, having approached Drupada, the mighty Bhāradvāja (Droṇa) said to the Pārṣata king, 'Know me as your friend (sakhi).'
द्रुपद उवाच ।
अकृतेयं तव प्रज्ञा ब्रह्मन्नातिसमञ्जसी ।
यन्मां ब्रवीषि प्रसभं सखा तेऽहमिति द्विज ॥२॥
2. drupada uvāca ,
akṛteyaṁ tava prajñā brahmannātisamañjasī ,
yanmāṁ bravīṣi prasabhaṁ sakhā te'hamiti dvija.
2. drupadaḥ uvāca | akṛtā iyam tava prajñā brahman na ati
samañjasī | yat mām bravīṣi prasabham sakhā te aham iti dvija
2. Drupada said: "O Brahmin, this understanding of yours is immature and not at all appropriate, that you forcibly tell me, 'O twice-born (dvija), I am your friend (sakhi)!'"
न हि राज्ञामुदीर्णानामेवंभूतैर्नरैः क्वचित् ।
सख्यं भवति मन्दात्मञ्श्रिया हीनैर्धनच्युतैः ॥३॥
3. na hi rājñāmudīrṇānāmevaṁbhūtairnaraiḥ kvacit ,
sakhyaṁ bhavati mandātmañśriyā hīnairdhanacyutaiḥ.
3. na hi rājñām udīrṇānām evaṃ-bhūtaiḥ naraiḥ kvacit |
sakhyam bhavati manda-ātman śriyā hīnaiḥ dhana-cyutaiḥ
3. Indeed, O dull-witted one (mandātman), friendship (sakhya) never arises for powerful kings with men who are devoid of glory and deprived of wealth.
सौहृदान्यपि जीर्यन्ते कालेन परिजीर्यताम् ।
सौहृदं मे त्वया ह्यासीत्पूर्वं सामर्थ्यबन्धनम् ॥४॥
4. sauhṛdānyapi jīryante kālena parijīryatām ,
sauhṛdaṁ me tvayā hyāsītpūrvaṁ sāmarthyabandhanam.
4. sauhṛdāni api jīryante kālena parijīryatām |
sauhṛdam me tvayā hi āsīt pūrvam sāmarthyabandhanam
4. Even friendships wear out with the passage of time, especially among those who are themselves declining. Indeed, my friendship with you was previously based on mutual strength.
न सख्यमजरं लोके जातु दृश्येत कर्हिचित् ।
कामो वैनं विहरति क्रोधश्चैनं प्रवृश्चति ॥५॥
5. na sakhyamajaraṁ loke jātu dṛśyeta karhicit ,
kāmo vainaṁ viharati krodhaścainaṁ pravṛścati.
5. na sakhyam ajaram loke jātu dṛśyeta karhicit |
kāmaḥ vai enam viharati krodhaḥ ca enam pravṛścati
5. An everlasting friendship is never truly seen in this world. Desire (kāma) surely destroys it, and anger cuts it down.
मैवं जीर्णमुपासिष्ठाः सख्यं नवमुपाकुरु ।
आसीत्सख्यं द्विजश्रेष्ठ त्वया मेऽर्थनिबन्धनम् ॥६॥
6. maivaṁ jīrṇamupāsiṣṭhāḥ sakhyaṁ navamupākuru ,
āsītsakhyaṁ dvijaśreṣṭha tvayā me'rthanibandhanam.
6. mā evam jīrṇam upāsiṣṭhāḥ sakhyam navam upākuru |
āsīt sakhyam dvijaśreṣṭha tvayā me arthanibandhanam
6. Do not cling to such an old, worn-out friendship. Instead, cultivate a new one. O best of the twice-born (dvija), my friendship with you was merely based on personal gain.
न दरिद्रो वसुमतो नाविद्वान्विदुषः सखा ।
शूरस्य न सखा क्लीबः सखिपूर्वं किमिष्यते ॥७॥
7. na daridro vasumato nāvidvānviduṣaḥ sakhā ,
śūrasya na sakhā klībaḥ sakhipūrvaṁ kimiṣyate.
7. na daridraḥ vasumataḥ na avidvān viduṣaḥ sakhā
| śūrasya na sakhā klībaḥ sakhipūrvam kim iṣyate
7. A poor person is not a friend to a wealthy one, nor is an ignorant person a friend to a wise one. A coward is not a friend to a brave person. What is the use of a past friendship?
ययोरेव समं वित्तं ययोरेव समं कुलम् ।
तयोः सख्यं विवाहश्च न तु पुष्टविपुष्टयोः ॥८॥
8. yayoreva samaṁ vittaṁ yayoreva samaṁ kulam ,
tayoḥ sakhyaṁ vivāhaśca na tu puṣṭavipuṣṭayoḥ.
8. yayoḥ eva samam vittam yayoḥ eva samam kulam |
tayoḥ sakhyam vivāhaḥ ca na tu puṣṭavipuṣṭayoḥ
8. Friendship and marriage are suitable only for those two who possess equal wealth and equal family lineage. They are not meant for those who are strong and weak, or flourishing and declining, respectively.
नाश्रोत्रियः श्रोत्रियस्य नारथी रथिनः सखा ।
नाराज्ञा संगतं राज्ञः सखिपूर्वं किमिष्यते ॥९॥
9. nāśrotriyaḥ śrotriyasya nārathī rathinaḥ sakhā ,
nārājñā saṁgataṁ rājñaḥ sakhipūrvaṁ kimiṣyate.
9. na aśrotriyaḥ śrotriyasya na arathī rathinaḥ sakhā
na arājñā saṅgatam rājñaḥ sakhipūrvam kim iṣyate
9. One who is not a Vedic scholar cannot be a friend to a Vedic scholar. One who lacks a chariot cannot be a friend to a charioteer. How, then, can a non-king expect to form a friendship (sakhipūrvam) with a king? Such a relationship is not to be sought.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
द्रुपदेनैवमुक्तस्तु भारद्वाजः प्रतापवान् ।
मुहूर्तं चिन्तयामास मन्युनाभिपरिप्लुतः ॥१०॥
10. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
drupadenaivamuktastu bhāradvājaḥ pratāpavān ,
muhūrtaṁ cintayāmāsa manyunābhipariplutaḥ.
10. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca drupadena eva muktaḥ tu bhāradvājaḥ
pratāpavān muhūrtam cintayāmāsa manyunā abhipariplutaḥ
10. Vaiśampāyana said: But the mighty (pratāpavān) Bhāradvāja (Drona), thus dismissed (muktaḥ) by Drupada and overwhelmed by anger (manyu), pondered for a moment.
स विनिश्चित्य मनसा पाञ्चालं प्रति बुद्धिमान् ।
जगाम कुरुमुख्यानां नगरं नागसाह्वयम् ॥११॥
11. sa viniścitya manasā pāñcālaṁ prati buddhimān ,
jagāma kurumukhyānāṁ nagaraṁ nāgasāhvayam.
11. sa viniścitya manasā pāñcālam prati buddhimān
jagāma kurumukhyānām nagaram nāgasāhvayam
11. He, the intelligent (buddhimān) Drona, having resolved in his mind concerning Pañcāla, went to the city of the chief Kurus, which was called Hastināpura (nāgasāhvayam).
कुमारास्त्वथ निष्क्रम्य समेता गजसाह्वयात् ।
क्रीडन्तो वीटया तत्र वीराः पर्यचरन्मुदा ॥१२॥
12. kumārāstvatha niṣkramya sametā gajasāhvayāt ,
krīḍanto vīṭayā tatra vīrāḥ paryacaranmudā.
12. kumārāḥ tu atha niṣkramya sametāḥ gajasāhvayāt
krīḍantaḥ vīṭayā tatra vīrāḥ paryacaran mudā
12. Then, the princes (kumārāḥ), who were brave (vīrāḥ), came out from Hastināpura (gajasāhvayāt), gathered together, and joyfully (mudā) played there with a ball (vīṭayā).
पपात कूपे सा वीटा तेषां वै क्रीडतां तदा ।
न च ते प्रत्यपद्यन्त कर्म वीटोपलब्धये ॥१३॥
13. papāta kūpe sā vīṭā teṣāṁ vai krīḍatāṁ tadā ,
na ca te pratyapadyanta karma vīṭopalabdhaye.
13. papāta kūpe sā vīṭā teṣām vai krīḍatām tadā
na ca te pratyapadyanta karma vīṭāupalabdhaye
13. Then, as they were playing, their ball (vīṭā) indeed fell into a well. And they were unable to devise a way (karma) to retrieve that ball.
अथ द्रोणः कुमारांस्तान्दृष्ट्वा कृत्यवतस्तदा ।
प्रहस्य मन्दं पैशल्यादभ्यभाषत वीर्यवान् ॥१४॥
14. atha droṇaḥ kumārāṁstāndṛṣṭvā kṛtyavatastadā ,
prahasya mandaṁ paiśalyādabhyabhāṣata vīryavān.
14. atha droṇaḥ kumārān tān dṛṣṭvā kṛtyavataḥ tadā
prahasya mandaṃ paiśalyāt abhyabhāṣata vīryavān
14. Then, the powerful Drona, seeing those princes occupied with their task, laughed softly and, with a subtle cunning, addressed them.
अहो नु धिग्बलं क्षात्रं धिगेतां वः कृतास्त्रताम् ।
भरतस्यान्वये जाता ये वीटां नाधिगच्छत ॥१५॥
15. aho nu dhigbalaṁ kṣātraṁ dhigetāṁ vaḥ kṛtāstratām ,
bharatasyānvaye jātā ye vīṭāṁ nādhigacchata.
15. aho nu dhik balam kṣātram dhik etām vaḥ kṛtāstratām
bharatasya anvaye jātāḥ ye vīṭām na adhigacchata
15. Oh, indeed, shame on your martial strength! Shame on this mastery of weapons of yours! You who were born in the lineage of Bharata, yet cannot retrieve the ring!
एष मुष्टिरिषीकाणां मयास्त्रेणाभिमन्त्रितः ।
अस्य वीर्यं निरीक्षध्वं यदन्यस्य न विद्यते ॥१६॥
16. eṣa muṣṭiriṣīkāṇāṁ mayāstreṇābhimantritaḥ ,
asya vīryaṁ nirīkṣadhvaṁ yadanyasya na vidyate.
16. eṣaḥ muṣṭiḥ iṣīkāṇām mayā astreṇa abhimantritaḥ
asya vīryam nirīkṣadhvam yat anyasya na vidyate
16. This handful of reeds has been consecrated by me with a powerful incantation. Observe its potency, which is not found in anyone else.
वेत्स्यामीषीकया वीटां तामिषीकामथान्यया ।
तामन्यया समायोगो वीटाया ग्रहणे मम ॥१७॥
17. vetsyāmīṣīkayā vīṭāṁ tāmiṣīkāmathānyayā ,
tāmanyayā samāyogo vīṭāyā grahaṇe mama.
17. vetsyāmi iṣīkayā vīṭām tām iṣīkām atha anyayā
tām anyayā samāyogaḥ vīṭāyāḥ grahaṇe mama
17. I will pierce the ring with a reed. Then, with another reed, I will connect to that reed. This will be my method for retrieving the ring.
तदपश्यन्कुमारास्ते विस्मयोत्फुल्ललोचनाः ।
अवेष्क्य चोद्धृतां वीटां वीटावेद्धारमब्रुवन् ॥१८॥
18. tadapaśyankumārāste vismayotphullalocanāḥ ,
aveṣkya coddhṛtāṁ vīṭāṁ vīṭāveddhāramabruvan.
18. tat apaśyan kumārāḥ te vismayotphullalocanāḥ
aveṣkya ca uddhṛtām vīṭām vīṭāveddhāram abruvan
18. Those princes, their eyes wide open with astonishment, saw that, and having observed the retrieved ring, they spoke to the one who had pierced the ring.
अभिवादयामहे ब्रह्मन्नैतदन्येषु विद्यते ।
कोऽसि कं त्वाभिजानीमो वयं किं करवामहे ॥१९॥
19. abhivādayāmahe brahmannaitadanyeṣu vidyate ,
ko'si kaṁ tvābhijānīmo vayaṁ kiṁ karavāmahe.
19. abhivādayāmahe brahman na etat anyeṣu vidyate
kaḥ asi kam tvā abhijānīmaḥ vayam kim karavāmahe
19. O Brahmin, we greet you. Such [excellence] is not found in others. Who are you? How shall we recognize you? What can we do for you?
द्रोण उवाच ।
आचक्षध्वं च भीष्माय रूपेण च गुणैश्च माम् ।
स एव सुमहाबुद्धिः सांप्रतं प्रतिपत्स्यते ॥२०॥
20. droṇa uvāca ,
ācakṣadhvaṁ ca bhīṣmāya rūpeṇa ca guṇaiśca mām ,
sa eva sumahābuddhiḥ sāṁprataṁ pratipatsyate.
20. droṇa uvāca ācakṣadhvam ca bhīṣmāya rūpeṇa ca guṇaiḥ
ca mām saḥ eva sumahābuddhiḥ sāṃpratam pratipatsyate
20. Droṇa said: "Describe me to Bhīṣma, both my appearance and my qualities. That very wise man will surely recognize me."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तथेत्युक्त्वा तु ते सर्वे भीष्ममूचुः पितामहम् ।
ब्राह्मणस्य वचस्तथ्यं तच्च कर्मविशेषवत् ॥२१॥
21. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tathetyuktvā tu te sarve bhīṣmamūcuḥ pitāmaham ,
brāhmaṇasya vacastathyaṁ tacca karmaviśeṣavat.
21. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca tathā iti uktvā tu te sarve bhīṣmam ūcuḥ
pitāmaham brāhmaṇasya vacaḥ tathyam tat ca karmaviśeṣavat
21. Vaiśampāyana said: Having said "So be it," all of them then spoke to Grandfather Bhīṣma, [relaying that] "The Brahmin's words are truthful, and his conduct is particularly distinguished."
भीष्मः श्रुत्वा कुमाराणां द्रोणं तं प्रत्यजानत ।
युक्तरूपः स हि गुरुरित्येवमनुचिन्त्य च ॥२२॥
22. bhīṣmaḥ śrutvā kumārāṇāṁ droṇaṁ taṁ pratyajānata ,
yuktarūpaḥ sa hi gururityevamanucintya ca.
22. bhīṣmaḥ śrutvā kumārāṇām droṇam tam pratyajānata
yuktarūpaḥ saḥ hi guruḥ iti evam anucintya ca
22. Having heard from the princes, Bhīṣma then recognized Droṇa. And having reflected in this manner, "He is indeed a suitable preceptor (guru)," ...
अथैनमानीय तदा स्वयमेव सुसत्कृतम् ।
परिपप्रच्छ निपुणं भीष्मः शस्त्रभृतां वरः ।
हेतुमागमने तस्य द्रोणः सर्वं न्यवेदयत् ॥२३॥
23. athainamānīya tadā svayameva susatkṛtam ,
paripapraccha nipuṇaṁ bhīṣmaḥ śastrabhṛtāṁ varaḥ ,
hetumāgamane tasya droṇaḥ sarvaṁ nyavedayat.
23. atha enam ānīya tadā svayam eva
susatkṛtam paripapracha nipuṇam
bhīṣmaḥ śastrabṛtām varaḥ hetum
āgamane tasya droṇaḥ sarvam nyavedayat
23. Then, having brought him there and personally honored him, Bhīṣma, the foremost among weapon-wielders, skillfully questioned him about the reason for his arrival. Droṇa then disclosed everything.
महर्षेरग्निवेश्यस्य सकाशमहमच्युत ।
अस्त्रार्थमगमं पूर्वं धनुर्वेदजिघृक्षया ॥२४॥
24. maharṣeragniveśyasya sakāśamahamacyuta ,
astrārthamagamaṁ pūrvaṁ dhanurvedajighṛkṣayā.
24. maharṣeḥ agniveśyasya sakāśam aham acyuta
astrārtham agamam pūrvam dhanurvedajighṛkṣayā
24. O Acyuta, I formerly went to the great sage Agniveśya to learn the science of archery (dhanurveda) and to obtain divine weapons.
ब्रह्मचारी विनीतात्मा जटिलो बहुलाः समाः ।
अवसं तत्र सुचिरं धनुर्वेदचिकीर्षया ॥२५॥
25. brahmacārī vinītātmā jaṭilo bahulāḥ samāḥ ,
avasaṁ tatra suciraṁ dhanurvedacikīrṣayā.
25. brahmacārī vinītātmā jaṭilaḥ bahulāḥ samāḥ
avasam tatra suciram dhanurvedacikīrṣayā
25. I resided there for a very long time, for many years, as a celibate student (brahmacārī) with a disciplined spirit (ātman) and matted hair, eager to master the science of archery (dhanurveda).
पाञ्चालराजपुत्रस्तु यज्ञसेनो महाबलः ।
मया सहाकरोद्विद्यां गुरोः श्राम्यन्समाहितः ॥२६॥
26. pāñcālarājaputrastu yajñaseno mahābalaḥ ,
mayā sahākarodvidyāṁ guroḥ śrāmyansamāhitaḥ.
26. pāñcālarājaputraḥ tu yajñasenaḥ mahābalaḥ mayā
saha akarot vidyām guroḥ śrāmyan samāhitaḥ
26. And Yajñasena, the son of the Pañcāla king and a man of great strength, diligently studied with me under the guru, applying himself with full concentration.
स मे तत्र सखा चासीदुपकारी प्रियश्च मे ।
तेनाहं सह संगम्य रतवान्सुचिरं बत ।
बाल्यात्प्रभृति कौरव्य सहाध्ययनमेव च ॥२७॥
27. sa me tatra sakhā cāsīdupakārī priyaśca me ,
tenāhaṁ saha saṁgamya ratavānsuciraṁ bata ,
bālyātprabhṛti kauravya sahādhyayanameva ca.
27. saḥ me tatra sakhā ca āsīt upakārī
priyaḥ ca me tena aham saha saṅgamya
ratavān suciram bata bālyāt
prabhṛti kauravya sahādhyayanam eva ca
27. He was my friend there, helpful and dear to me. O Kauravya, I indeed enjoyed his company for a very long time, as we had studied together since childhood.
स समासाद्य मां तत्र प्रियकारी प्रियंवदः ।
अब्रवीदिति मां भीष्म वचनं प्रीतिवर्धनम् ॥२८॥
28. sa samāsādya māṁ tatra priyakārī priyaṁvadaḥ ,
abravīditi māṁ bhīṣma vacanaṁ prītivardhanam.
28. saḥ samāsādya mām tatra priyakārī priyaṃvadaḥ
abravīt iti mām bhīṣma vacanam prītivardhanam
28. O Bhīṣma, that pleasing and amiable friend, having approached me there, spoke these words that fostered affection.
अहं प्रियतमः पुत्रः पितुर्द्रोण महात्मनः ।
अभिषेक्ष्यति मां राज्ये स पाञ्चाल्यो यदा तदा ॥२९॥
29. ahaṁ priyatamaḥ putraḥ piturdroṇa mahātmanaḥ ,
abhiṣekṣyati māṁ rājye sa pāñcālyo yadā tadā.
29. aham priyatamaḥ putraḥ pituḥ droṇa mahātmanaḥ
abhiṣekṣyati mām rājye sa pāñcālyaḥ yadā tadā
29. I am the most beloved son of my great-souled father, Drona. That Pañcāla ruler (Drupada) will enthrone me in the kingdom when he attains sovereignty.
त्वद्भोज्यं भविता राज्यं सखे सत्येन ते शपे ।
मम भोगाश्च वित्तं च त्वदधीनं सुखानि च ॥३०॥
30. tvadbhojyaṁ bhavitā rājyaṁ sakhe satyena te śape ,
mama bhogāśca vittaṁ ca tvadadhīnaṁ sukhāni ca.
30. tvadbhogyam bhavitā rājyam sakhe satyena te śape
mama bhogāḥ ca vittam ca tvadadhīnam sukhāni ca
30. O friend, I swear to you by truth (satya): the kingdom will be yours to enjoy. My possessions, wealth, and pleasures will all be under your control.
एवमुक्तः प्रवव्राज कृतास्त्रोऽहं धनेप्सया ।
अभिषिक्तं च श्रुत्वैनं कृतार्थोऽस्मीति चिन्तयन् ॥३१॥
31. evamuktaḥ pravavrāja kṛtāstro'haṁ dhanepsayā ,
abhiṣiktaṁ ca śrutvainaṁ kṛtārtho'smīti cintayan.
31. evam uktaḥ pravavrāja kṛtāstraḥ aham dhanepsayā
abhiṣiktam ca śrutvā enam kṛtārthaḥ asmi iti cintayan
31. After being thus addressed (by Drupada's promise), I, who was skilled in weaponry (kṛtāstra), departed with a desire for wealth. And hearing that he (Drupada) had been consecrated as king, I thought, 'I have achieved my purpose.'
प्रियं सखायं सुप्रीतो राज्यस्थं पुनराव्रजम् ।
संस्मरन्संगमं चैव वचनं चैव तस्य तत् ॥३२॥
32. priyaṁ sakhāyaṁ suprīto rājyasthaṁ punarāvrajam ,
saṁsmaransaṁgamaṁ caiva vacanaṁ caiva tasya tat.
32. priyam sakhāyam suprītaḥ rājyastham punar āvrajam
saṃsmaran saṃgamam ca eva vacanam ca eva tasya tat
32. Very pleased, I returned to my dear friend, who was now established in his kingdom, remembering both that past association and those words of his.
ततो द्रुपदमागम्य सखिपूर्वमहं प्रभो ।
अब्रुवं पुरुषव्याघ्र सखायं विद्धि मामिति ॥३३॥
33. tato drupadamāgamya sakhipūrvamahaṁ prabho ,
abruvaṁ puruṣavyāghra sakhāyaṁ viddhi māmiti.
33. tataḥ drupdam āgamya sakhpūrvam aham prabho
abruvam puruṣavyāghra sakhāyam viddhi mām iti
33. Then, O lord, having approached Drupada, I (Drona) addressed him as a former friend, saying, 'O tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), know me as your friend!'
उपस्थितं तु द्रुपदः सखिवच्चाभिसंगतम् ।
स मां निराकारमिव प्रहसन्निदमब्रवीत् ॥३४॥
34. upasthitaṁ tu drupadaḥ sakhivaccābhisaṁgatam ,
sa māṁ nirākāramiva prahasannidamabravīt.
34. upasthitaṃ tu drupadaḥ sakhivat ca abhisaṃgatam
sa mām nirākāram iva prahasan idam abravīt
34. However, Drupada, seeing me arrived and approached as a friend, laughed as if dismissing me, and spoke this.
अकृतेयं तव प्रज्ञा ब्रह्मन्नातिसमञ्जसी ।
यदात्थ मां त्वं प्रसभं सखा तेऽहमिति द्विज ॥३५॥
35. akṛteyaṁ tava prajñā brahmannātisamañjasī ,
yadāttha māṁ tvaṁ prasabhaṁ sakhā te'hamiti dvija.
35. akṛtā iyam tava prajñā brahman na atisamañjasī yat
āttha mām tvam prasabham sakhā te aham iti dvija
35. This wisdom (prajñā) of yours, O Brahmin, is immature and not very appropriate, because you forcibly say to me, 'I am your friend,' O twice-born (dvija).
न हि राज्ञामुदीर्णानामेवंभूतैर्नरैः क्वचित् ।
सख्यं भवति मन्दात्मञ्श्रिया हीनैर्धनच्युतैः ॥३६॥
36. na hi rājñāmudīrṇānāmevaṁbhūtairnaraiḥ kvacit ,
sakhyaṁ bhavati mandātmañśriyā hīnairdhanacyutaiḥ.
36. na hi rājñām udīrṇānām evambhūtaiḥ naraiḥ kvacit
sakhyam bhavati mandātman śriyā hīnaiḥ dhanacyutaiḥ
36. Indeed, O dull-witted one, friendship never exists between mighty kings and such men who are devoid of prosperity and fallen from wealth.
नाश्रोत्रियः श्रोत्रियस्य नारथी रथिनः सखा ।
नाराजा पार्थिवस्यापि सखिपूर्वं किमिष्यते ॥३७॥
37. nāśrotriyaḥ śrotriyasya nārathī rathinaḥ sakhā ,
nārājā pārthivasyāpi sakhipūrvaṁ kimiṣyate.
37. na aśrotriyaḥ śrotriyasya na arathī rathinaḥ sakhā
na arājā pārthivasya api sakhipūrvam kim iṣyate
37. A non-śrotriya is not the friend of a śrotriya, nor is a non-charioteer the friend of a charioteer. Neither is a non-king a king's friend. What sort of prior friendship, then, is expected (between us)?
द्रुपदेनैवमुक्तोऽहं मन्युनाभिपरिप्लुतः ।
अभ्यागच्छं कुरून्भीष्म शिष्यैरर्थी गुणान्वितैः ॥३८॥
38. drupadenaivamukto'haṁ manyunābhipariplutaḥ ,
abhyāgacchaṁ kurūnbhīṣma śiṣyairarthī guṇānvitaiḥ.
38. drupdena eva uktaḥ aham manyunā abhipariplutaḥ
abhyāgaccham kurūn bhīṣma śiṣyaiḥ arthī guṇānvitaiḥ
38. Thus addressed by Drupada, O Bhishma, I, overflowing with anger, approached the Kurus, seeking virtuous students.
प्रतिजग्राह तं भीष्मो गुरुं पाण्डुसुतैः सह ।
पौत्रानादाय तान्सर्वान्वसूनि विविधानि च ॥३९॥
39. pratijagrāha taṁ bhīṣmo guruṁ pāṇḍusutaiḥ saha ,
pautrānādāya tānsarvānvasūni vividhāni ca.
39. pratijagrāha tam bhīṣmaḥ gurum pāṇḍusutaiḥ saha
pautrān ādāya tān sarvān vasūni vividhāni ca
39. Bhishma received that teacher (guru) along with the sons of Pandu. He took all those grandsons and various kinds of wealth.
शिष्या इति ददौ राजन्द्रोणाय विधिपूर्वकम् ।
स च शिष्यान्महेष्वासः प्रतिजग्राह कौरवान् ॥४०॥
40. śiṣyā iti dadau rājandroṇāya vidhipūrvakam ,
sa ca śiṣyānmaheṣvāsaḥ pratijagrāha kauravān.
40. śiṣyāḥ iti dadau rājan droṇāya vidhipūrvakam
saḥ ca śiṣyān maheṣvāsaḥ pratijagrāha kauravān
40. O king, taking all those grandsons and various riches, he formally presented them to Drona as his disciples. And that great archer (maheṣvāsa) Drona accepted the Kauravas as his disciples.
प्रतिगृह्य च तान्सर्वान्द्रोणो वचनमब्रवीत् ।
रहस्येकः प्रतीतात्मा कृतोपसदनांस्तदा ॥४१॥
41. pratigṛhya ca tānsarvāndroṇo vacanamabravīt ,
rahasyekaḥ pratītātmā kṛtopasadanāṁstadā.
41. pratigṛhya ca tān sarvān droṇaḥ vacanam abravīt
rahasi ekaḥ pratītātmā kṛtopasadanān tadā
41. And having received all of them, Drona, with a confident mind (ātman), then spoke a word in private to those who had approached him for instruction.
कार्यं मे काङ्क्षितं किंचिद्धृदि संपरिवर्तते ।
कृतास्त्रैस्तत्प्रदेयं मे तदृतं वदतानघाः ॥४२॥
42. kāryaṁ me kāṅkṣitaṁ kiṁciddhṛdi saṁparivartate ,
kṛtāstraistatpradeyaṁ me tadṛtaṁ vadatānaghāḥ.
42. kāryam me kāṅkṣitam kiñcit hṛdi saṃparivartate
kṛtāstraiḥ tat pradeyam me tat ṛtam vadata anaghāḥ
42. Something that I desire, a task, resides in my heart. That must be accomplished for me by those who are skilled in weaponry. O sinless ones, tell me truly if you will do it.
तच्छ्रुत्वा कौरवेयास्ते तूष्णीमासन्विशां पते ।
अर्जुनस्तु ततः सर्वं प्रतिजज्ञे परंतपः ॥४३॥
43. tacchrutvā kauraveyāste tūṣṇīmāsanviśāṁ pate ,
arjunastu tataḥ sarvaṁ pratijajñe paraṁtapaḥ.
43. tat śrutvā kauraveyāḥ te tūṣṇīm āsan viśām pate
arjunaḥ tu tataḥ sarvam pratijajñe paraṁtapaḥ
43. Having heard that, O lord of men, those Kauravas remained silent. But Arjuna, the scorcher of foes, then promised to undertake everything.
ततोऽर्जुनं मूर्ध्नि तदा समाघ्राय पुनः पुनः ।
प्रीतिपूर्वं परिष्वज्य प्ररुरोद मुदा तदा ॥४४॥
44. tato'rjunaṁ mūrdhni tadā samāghrāya punaḥ punaḥ ,
prītipūrvaṁ pariṣvajya praruroda mudā tadā.
44. tataḥ arjunam mūrdhni tadā samāghrāya punaḥ
punaḥ prītipūrvam pariṣvajya praruroda mudā tadā
44. Then, kissing Arjuna on the head again and again, and embracing him with affection, he cried aloud with joy at that moment.
ततो द्रोणः पाण्डुपुत्रानस्त्राणि विविधानि च ।
ग्राहयामास दिव्यानि मानुषाणि च वीर्यवान् ॥४५॥
45. tato droṇaḥ pāṇḍuputrānastrāṇi vividhāni ca ,
grāhayāmāsa divyāni mānuṣāṇi ca vīryavān.
45. tataḥ droṇaḥ pāṇḍuputrān astrāṇi vividhāni
ca grāhayāmāsa divyāni mānuṣāṇi ca vīryavān
45. Then, the powerful Droṇa caused the sons of Pāṇḍu to learn various weapons, both divine and human.
राजपुत्रास्तथैवान्ये समेत्य भरतर्षभ ।
अभिजग्मुस्ततो द्रोणमस्त्रार्थे द्विजसत्तमम् ।
वृष्णयश्चान्धकाश्चैव नानादेश्याश्च पार्थिवाः ॥४६॥
46. rājaputrāstathaivānye sametya bharatarṣabha ,
abhijagmustato droṇamastrārthe dvijasattamam ,
vṛṣṇayaścāndhakāścaiva nānādeśyāśca pārthivāḥ.
46. rājaputrāḥ tathā eva anye sametya
bharatarṣabha abhijagmuḥ tataḥ droṇam
astrārthe dvijasattamam vṛṣṇayaḥ ca
andhakāḥ ca eva nānādeśyāḥ ca pārthivāḥ
46. O best among the Bhāratas, other princes also, having assembled, then approached Droṇa, the foremost among the twice-born (dvija), for the sake of weaponry. Among them were the Vṛṣṇis, the Andhakas, and kings from various countries.
सूतपुत्रश्च राधेयो गुरुं द्रोणमियात्तदा ।
स्पर्धमानस्तु पार्थेन सूतपुत्रोऽत्यमर्षणः ।
दुर्योधनमुपाश्रित्य पाण्डवानत्यमन्यत ॥४७॥
47. sūtaputraśca rādheyo guruṁ droṇamiyāttadā ,
spardhamānastu pārthena sūtaputro'tyamarṣaṇaḥ ,
duryodhanamupāśritya pāṇḍavānatyamanyata.
47. sūtaputraḥ ca rādheyaḥ gurum droṇam
iyāt tadā spardhamānaḥ tu pārthena
sūtaputraḥ atyamarṣaṇaḥ duryodhanam
upāśritya pāṇḍavān atyamanyata
47. And Sūtaputra (Karṇa), son of Rādhā, then came to his teacher (guru) Droṇa. However, that Sūtaputra, being intensely resentful and competing with Arjuna (Pārtha), took refuge with Duryodhana and greatly disdained the Pāṇḍavas.
