कथमासंस्तदा योधा हीना भीष्मेण संजय ।
बलिना देवकल्पेन गुर्वर्थे ब्रह्मचारिणा ॥१॥

kathamāsaṁstadā yodhā hīnā bhīṣmeṇa saṁjaya ,
balinā devakalpena gurvarthe brahmacāriṇā.

1. Dhritarashtra said: "O Sanjaya, how then did those warriors fare, deprived of Bhishma, that mighty, god-like one who observed celibacy (brahmacarya) for his guru's purpose?"
तदैव निहतान्मन्ये कुरूनन्यांश्च पार्थिवान् ।
न प्राहरद्यदा भीष्मो घृणित्वाद्द्रुपदात्मजे ॥२॥
2. tadaiva nihatānmanye kurūnanyāṁśca pārthivān ,
na prāharadyadā bhīṣmo ghṛṇitvāddrupadātmaje.
2. tadā eva nihatān manye kurūn anyān ca pārthivān
na prāharat yadā bhīṣmaḥ ghṛṇitvāt drupada-ātmaje
2. yadā bhīṣmaḥ ghṛṇitvāt drupada-ātmaje na prāharat,

2. I consider the Kauravas and other kings to have been slain at that very moment, when Bhishma, due to his compassion (ghṛṇā), did not strike the son of Drupada.
ततो दुःखतरं मन्ये किमन्यत्प्रभविष्यति ।
यदद्य पितरं श्रुत्वा निहतं मम दुर्मतेः ॥३॥
3. tato duḥkhataraṁ manye kimanyatprabhaviṣyati ,
yadadya pitaraṁ śrutvā nihataṁ mama durmateḥ.
3. tataḥ duḥkhataram manye kim anyat prabhaviṣyati
yat adya pitaram śrutvā nihatam mama durmateḥ
3. adya mama durmateḥ pitaram nihatam śrutvā,
tataḥ kim anyat duḥkhataram prabhaviṣyati (iti) manye
3. I consider what other sorrow could be greater than this, having heard today that my father, of me, the ill-fated one, has been slain.
अश्मसारमयं नूनं हृदयं मम संजय ।
श्रुत्वा विनिहतं भीष्मं शतधा यन्न दीर्यते ॥४॥
4. aśmasāramayaṁ nūnaṁ hṛdayaṁ mama saṁjaya ,
śrutvā vinihataṁ bhīṣmaṁ śatadhā yanna dīryate.
4. aśmasāramayam nūnam hṛdayam mama saṃjaya śrutvā
vinihatam bhīṣmam śatadhā yat na dīryate
4. saṃjaya,
nūnam mama hṛdayam aśmasāramayam,
yat bhīṣmam vinihatam śrutvā śatadhā na dīryate
4. O Sanjaya, surely my heart is made of iron, since having heard that Bhishma has been utterly slain, it does not burst into a hundred pieces.
पुनः पुनर्न मृष्यामि हतं देवव्रतं रणे ।
न हतो जामदग्न्येन दिव्यैरस्त्रैः स्म यः पुरा ॥५॥
5. punaḥ punarna mṛṣyāmi hataṁ devavrataṁ raṇe ,
na hato jāmadagnyena divyairastraiḥ sma yaḥ purā.
5. punaḥ punaḥ na mṛṣyāmi hatam devavratam raṇe na
hataḥ jāmadagnyena divyaiḥ astraiḥ sma yaḥ purā
5. yaḥ purā jāmadagnyena divyaiḥ astraiḥ na hataḥ,
tam devavratam raṇe hatam punaḥ punaḥ na mṛṣyāmi
5. Again and again I cannot bear the thought of Devavrata (Bhishma) slain in battle, he who was not killed in the past even by Jamadagni's son (Parashurama) with his divine weapons.
यदद्य निहतेनाजौ भीष्मेण जयमिच्छता ।
चेष्टितं नरसिंहेन तन्मे कथय संजय ॥६॥
6. yadadya nihatenājau bhīṣmeṇa jayamicchatā ,
ceṣṭitaṁ narasiṁhena tanme kathaya saṁjaya.
6. yat adya nihatena ājau bhīṣmeṇa jayam icchatā
ceṣṭitam narasiṃhena tat me kathaya saṃjaya
6. saṃjaya adya ājau jayam icchatā narasiṃhena
nihatena bhīṣmeṇa yat ceṣṭitam tat me kathaya
6. O Sanjaya, tell me what action was performed today by Bhishma, the lion among men, who, though struck down on the battlefield, still wished for victory.
संजय उवाच ।
सायाह्ने न्यपतद्भूमौ धार्तराष्ट्रान्विषादयन् ।
पाञ्चालानां ददद्धर्षं कुरुवृद्धः पितामहः ॥७॥
7. saṁjaya uvāca ,
sāyāhne nyapatadbhūmau dhārtarāṣṭrānviṣādayan ,
pāñcālānāṁ dadaddharṣaṁ kuruvṛddhaḥ pitāmahaḥ.
7. saṃjaya uvāca sāyāhne nyapatat bhūmau dhārtarāṣṭrān
viṣādayan pāñcālānām dadat harṣam kuruvṛddhaḥ pitāmahaḥ
7. saṃjaya uvāca kuruvṛddhaḥ pitāmahaḥ sāyāhne dhārtarāṣṭrān
viṣādayan pāñcālānām harṣam dadat bhūmau nyapatat
7. Sanjaya said: In the evening, the grandfather, the elder of the Kurus, fell to the ground, disheartening the Dhritarashtras and giving joy to the Panchalas.
स शेते शरतल्पस्थो मेदिनीमस्पृशंस्तदा ।
भीष्मो रथात्प्रपतितः प्रच्युतो धरणीतले ॥८॥
8. sa śete śaratalpastho medinīmaspṛśaṁstadā ,
bhīṣmo rathātprapatitaḥ pracyuto dharaṇītale.
8. sa śete śaratarpasthaḥ medinīm aspṛśan tadā
bhīṣmaḥ rathāt prapatitaḥ pracyutaḥ dharaṇītale

8. Then, Bhishma, having fallen from his chariot and cast down upon the ground, lies upon a bed of arrows, not touching the earth.
हा हेति तुमुलः शब्दो भूतानां समपद्यत ।
सीमावृक्षे निपतिते कुरूणां समितिक्षये ॥९॥
9. hā heti tumulaḥ śabdo bhūtānāṁ samapadyata ,
sīmāvṛkṣe nipatite kurūṇāṁ samitikṣaye.
9. hā hā iti tumulaḥ śabdaḥ bhūtānām samapadyata
sīmāvṛkṣe nipatite kurūṇām samitīkṣaye
9. sīmāvṛkṣe nipatite kurūṇām samitīkṣaye hā
hā iti tumulaḥ śabdaḥ bhūtānām samapadyata
9. A tumultuous cry of 'Alas! Alas!' arose from all beings when the boundary tree of the Kurus fell, marking the destruction of their assembly (samiti).
उभयोः सेनयो राजन्क्षत्रियान्भयमाविशत् ।
भीष्मं शंतनवं दृष्ट्वा विशीर्णकवचध्वजम् ।
कुरवः पर्यवर्तन्त पाण्डवाश्च विशां पते ॥१०॥
10. ubhayoḥ senayo rājankṣatriyānbhayamāviśat ,
bhīṣmaṁ śaṁtanavaṁ dṛṣṭvā viśīrṇakavacadhvajam ,
kuravaḥ paryavartanta pāṇḍavāśca viśāṁ pate.
10. ubhayoḥ senayoḥ rājan kṣatriyān
bhayam āviśat bhīṣmam śaṃtanavam dṛṣṭvā
viśīrṇakavacadhvajam kuravaḥ
paryavartanta pāṇḍavāḥ ca viśām pate
10. rājan viśām pate śaṃtanavam bhīṣmam
viśīrṇakavacadhvajam dṛṣṭvā ubhayoḥ
senayoḥ kṣatriyān bhayam āviśat
kuravaḥ ca pāṇḍavāḥ ca paryavartanta
10. O King, lord of the people, seeing Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, with his armor and banner shattered, fear gripped the warriors (kṣatriyas) of both armies. Both the Kurus and the Pandavas retreated.
खं तमोवृतमासीच्च नासीद्भानुमतः प्रभा ।
ररास पृथिवी चैव भीष्मे शांतनवे हते ॥११॥
11. khaṁ tamovṛtamāsīcca nāsīdbhānumataḥ prabhā ,
rarāsa pṛthivī caiva bhīṣme śāṁtanave hate.
11. kham tamovṛtam āsīt ca na āsīt bhānumataḥ prabhā
rarāsa pṛthivī ca eva bhīṣme śāṃtanave hate
11. bhīṣme śāṃtanave hate kham tamovṛtam āsīt ca
bhānumataḥ prabhā na āsīt pṛthivī ca eva rarāsa
11. When Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, was slain, the sky became covered with darkness, and the sun's radiance was absent. And indeed, the earth trembled.
अयं ब्रह्मविदां श्रेष्ठो अयं ब्रह्मविदां गतिः ।
इत्यभाषन्त भूतानि शयानं भरतर्षभम् ॥१२॥
12. ayaṁ brahmavidāṁ śreṣṭho ayaṁ brahmavidāṁ gatiḥ ,
ityabhāṣanta bhūtāni śayānaṁ bharatarṣabham.
12. ayam brahmavidām śreṣṭhaḥ ayam brahmavidām gatiḥ
iti abhāṣanta bhūtāni śayānam bharatarṣabham
12. bhūtāni śayānam bharatarṣabham iti abhāṣanta:
ayam brahmavidām śreṣṭhaḥ ayam brahmavidām gatiḥ
12. "This one is the best among those who know the absolute reality (brahman); this one is the destination for those who know the absolute reality (brahman)," thus spoke the beings about the bull among the Bharatas as he lay.
अयं पितरमाज्ञाय कामार्तं शंतनुं पुरा ।
ऊर्ध्वरेतसमात्मानं चकार पुरुषर्षभः ॥१३॥
13. ayaṁ pitaramājñāya kāmārtaṁ śaṁtanuṁ purā ,
ūrdhvaretasamātmānaṁ cakāra puruṣarṣabhaḥ.
13. ayam pitaram ājñāya kāmārtam śaṃtanum purā
ūrdhvaretasam ātmānam cakāra puruṣarṣabhaḥ
13. purā ayam puruṣarṣabhaḥ kāmārtam śaṃtanum
pitaram ājñāya ātmānam ūrdhvaretasam cakāra
13. Formerly, this best among men (puruṣarṣabha), understanding his father Shantanu to be distressed by desire (kāmārta), made himself celibate (ūrdhvaretas).
इति स्म शरतल्पस्थं भरतानाममध्यमम् ।
ऋषयः पर्यधावन्त सहिताः सिद्धचारणैः ॥१४॥
14. iti sma śaratalpasthaṁ bharatānāmamadhyamam ,
ṛṣayaḥ paryadhāvanta sahitāḥ siddhacāraṇaiḥ.
14. iti sma śaratpalpastham bharatānām amadhyamam
ṛṣayaḥ pari adhāvanta sahitāḥ siddhacāraṇaiḥ
14. iti sma ṛṣayaḥ sahitāḥ siddhacāraṇaiḥ
śaratpalpastham bharatānām amadhyamam pari adhāvanta
14. Thus, the sages, accompanied by Siddhas and Charanas, gathered around the foremost among the Bharatas (Bhishma), who lay on his bed of arrows.
हते शांतनवे भीष्मे भरतानां पितामहे ।
न किंचित्प्रत्यपद्यन्त पुत्रास्तव च भारत ॥१५॥
15. hate śāṁtanave bhīṣme bharatānāṁ pitāmahe ,
na kiṁcitpratyapadyanta putrāstava ca bhārata.
15. hate śāntanave bhīṣme bharatānām pitāmahe na
kiñcit prati apadyanta putrāḥ tava ca bhārata
15. bhārata tava putrāḥ bhīṣme śāntanave bharatānām
pitāmahe hate [sati] na kiñcit prati apadyanta
15. When Bhishma, the son of Shantanu and the grandfather of the Bharatas, was slain, your sons, O Bharata (Dhrtarashtra), could accomplish nothing.
विवर्णवदनाश्चासन्गतश्रीकाश्च भारत ।
अतिष्ठन्व्रीडिताश्चैव ह्रिया युक्ता ह्यधोमुखाः ॥१६॥
16. vivarṇavadanāścāsangataśrīkāśca bhārata ,
atiṣṭhanvrīḍitāścaiva hriyā yuktā hyadhomukhāḥ.
16. vivarṇavadanāḥ ca āsan gataśrīkāḥ ca bhārata
atiṣṭhan vrīḍitāḥ ca eva hriyā yuktāḥ hi adhomukhāḥ
16. bhārata [tava putrāḥ] vivarṇavadanāḥ ca gataśrīkāḥ ca
āsan hi vrīḍitāḥ ca eva hriyā yuktāḥ adhomukhāḥ atiṣṭhan
16. And they (your sons), O Bharata (Dhrtarashtra), were pale-faced and deprived of glory. Indeed, they stood ashamed and downcast-faced, filled with embarrassment.
पाण्डवाश्च जयं लब्ध्वा संग्रामशिरसि स्थिताः ।
सर्वे दध्मुर्महाशङ्खान्हेमजालपरिष्कृतान् ॥१७॥
17. pāṇḍavāśca jayaṁ labdhvā saṁgrāmaśirasi sthitāḥ ,
sarve dadhmurmahāśaṅkhānhemajālapariṣkṛtān.
17. pāṇḍavāḥ ca jayam labdhvā saṃgrāmaśirasi sthitāḥ
sarve dadhmuḥ mahāśaṅkhān hemajālaprariṣkṛtān
17. ca jayam labdhvā saṃgrāmaśirasi sthitāḥ sarve
pāṇḍavāḥ hemajālaprariṣkṛtān mahāśaṅkhān dadhmuḥ
17. And the Pandavas, having achieved victory and standing at the forefront of the battle, all blew their great conch shells, which were adorned with golden nets.
भृशं तूर्यनिनादेषु वाद्यमानेषु चानघ ।
अपश्याम रणे राजन्भीमसेनं महाबलम् ।
आक्रीडमानं कौन्तेयं हर्षेण महता युतम् ॥१८॥
18. bhṛśaṁ tūryaninādeṣu vādyamāneṣu cānagha ,
apaśyāma raṇe rājanbhīmasenaṁ mahābalam ,
ākrīḍamānaṁ kaunteyaṁ harṣeṇa mahatā yutam.
18. bhṛśam tūryanādeṣu vādyamāneṣu
ca anagha apaśyāma raṇe rājan
bhīmasenam mahābalam ākrīḍamānam
kaunteyam harṣeṇa mahatā yutam
18. anagha rājan bhṛśam vādyamāneṣu tūryanādeṣu ca raṇe mahābalam
bhīmasenam mahatā harṣeṇa yutam ākrīḍamānam apaśyāma
18. O sinless one, O king, amidst the exceedingly loud trumpet blasts being played, we saw the mighty Bhimasena (Bhīmasena) in battle, sporting with great joy.
निहत्य समरे शत्रून्महाबलसमन्वितान् ।
संमोहश्चापि तुमुलः कुरूणामभवत्तदा ॥१९॥
19. nihatya samare śatrūnmahābalasamanvitān ,
saṁmohaścāpi tumulaḥ kurūṇāmabhavattadā.
19. nihatya samare śatrūn mahābalasamannvitān
saṃmohaḥ ca api tumulaḥ kurūṇām abhavat tadā
19. samare mahābalasamannvitān śatrūn nihatya
tadā kurūṇām tumulaḥ saṃmohaḥ ca api abhavat
19. After he had slain the mighty enemies in battle, then a great confusion (saṃmoha) also arose among the Kurus.
कर्णदुर्योधनौ चापि निःश्वसेतां मुहुर्मुहुः ।
तथा निपतिते भीष्मे कौरवाणां धुरंधरे ।
हाहाकारमभूत्सर्वं निर्मर्यादमवर्तत ॥२०॥
20. karṇaduryodhanau cāpi niḥśvasetāṁ muhurmuhuḥ ,
tathā nipatite bhīṣme kauravāṇāṁ dhuraṁdhare ,
hāhākāramabhūtsarvaṁ nirmaryādamavartata.
20. karṇaduryodhanau ca api niḥśvasetām
muhuḥ muhuḥ tathā nipatite bhīṣme
kauravāṇām dhurandhare hāhākāram
abhūt sarvam nirmaryādam avartat
20. karṇaduryodhanau ca api muhur muhuḥ
niḥśvasetām tathā kauravāṇām
dhurandhare bhīṣme nipatite sarvam
hāhākāram abhūt nirmaryādam avartat
20. Karna and Duryodhana (Karṇaduryodhanau) also sighed repeatedly. And when Bhishma (Bhīṣma), the leader of the Kauravas, had thus fallen, everything turned into cries of lamentation, and chaos prevailed unchecked.
दृष्ट्वा च पतितं भीष्मं पुत्रो दुःशासनस्तव ।
उत्तमं जवमास्थाय द्रोणानीकं समाद्रवत् ॥२१॥
21. dṛṣṭvā ca patitaṁ bhīṣmaṁ putro duḥśāsanastava ,
uttamaṁ javamāsthāya droṇānīkaṁ samādravat.
21. dṛṣṭvā ca patitam bhīṣmam putraḥ duḥśāsanaḥ tava
uttamam javam āsthāya droṇānīkam samādravat
21. ca tava putraḥ duḥśāsanaḥ bhīṣmam patitam dṛṣṭvā
uttamam javam āsthāya droṇānīkam samādravat
21. And your son Duhshasana (Duḥśāsana), having seen Bhishma (Bhīṣma) fallen, then quickly rushed, taking on great speed, to Drona's (Droṇa's) army.
भ्रात्रा प्रस्थापितो वीरः स्वेनानीकेन दंशितः ।
प्रययौ पुरुषव्याघ्रः स्वसैन्यमभिचोदयन् ॥२२॥
22. bhrātrā prasthāpito vīraḥ svenānīkena daṁśitaḥ ,
prayayau puruṣavyāghraḥ svasainyamabhicodayan.
22. bhrātrā prasthāpitaḥ vīraḥ svena anīkena daṃśitaḥ
prayayau puruṣavyāghraḥ svasainyam abhicodayan
22. puruṣavyāghraḥ bhrātrā prasthāpitaḥ svena

22. The heroic tiger among men, sent forth by his brother and protected by his own army, marched on, urging his troops forward.
तमायान्तमभिप्रेक्ष्य कुरवः पर्यवारयन् ।
दुःशासनं महाराज किमयं वक्ष्यतीति वै ॥२३॥
23. tamāyāntamabhiprekṣya kuravaḥ paryavārayan ,
duḥśāsanaṁ mahārāja kimayaṁ vakṣyatīti vai.
23. tam āyāntam abhiprekṣya kuravaḥ paryavārayan
duḥśāsanam mahārāja kim ayam vakṣyati iti vai
23. mahārāja tam āyāntam abhiprekṣya kuravaḥ
duḥśāsanam paryavārayan ayam kim vakṣyati iti vai
23. O great king, having observed him approaching, the Kurus surrounded Duḥśāsana, wondering what he (Duḥśāsana) would indeed say.
ततो द्रोणाय निहतं भीष्ममाचष्ट कौरवः ।
द्रोणस्तदप्रियं श्रुत्वा सहसा न्यपतद्रथात् ॥२४॥
24. tato droṇāya nihataṁ bhīṣmamācaṣṭa kauravaḥ ,
droṇastadapriyaṁ śrutvā sahasā nyapatadrathāt.
24. tataḥ droṇāya nihatam bhīṣmam ācaṣṭa kauravaḥ
droṇaḥ tat apriyam śrutvā sahasā nyapatat rathāt
24. tataḥ kauravaḥ droṇāya nihatam bhīṣmam ācaṣṭa
droṇaḥ tat apriyam śrutvā sahasā rathāt nyapatat
24. Thereupon, the Kuru prince reported to Droṇa that Bhīṣma had been slain. Hearing that unpleasant news, Droṇa suddenly fell from his chariot.
स संज्ञामुपलभ्याथ भारद्वाजः प्रतापवान् ।
निवारयामास तदा स्वान्यनीकानि मारिष ॥२५॥
25. sa saṁjñāmupalabhyātha bhāradvājaḥ pratāpavān ,
nivārayāmāsa tadā svānyanīkāni māriṣa.
25. saḥ saṃjñām upalabhya atha bhāradvājaḥ pratāpavān
nivārayāmāsa tadā svāni anīkāni māriṣa
25. māriṣa atha saḥ pratāpavān bhāradvājaḥ saṃjñām
upalabhya tadā svāni anīkāni nivārayāmāsa
25. O respected one, then, regaining his consciousness (saṃjñā), that powerful Bhāradvāja (Droṇa) immediately restrained his own armies.
विनिवृत्तान्कुरून्दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवापि स्वसैनिकान् ।
दूतैः शीघ्राश्वसंयुक्तैरवहारमकारयन् ॥२६॥
26. vinivṛttānkurūndṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavāpi svasainikān ,
dūtaiḥ śīghrāśvasaṁyuktairavahāramakārayan.
26. vinivṛttān kurūn dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavā api svasainikān
dūtaiḥ śīghrāśvasaṃyuktaiḥ avahāram akārayan
26. vinivṛttān kurūn dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavā api śīghrāśvasaṃyuktaiḥ
dūtaiḥ svasainikān avahāram akārayan
26. Seeing the Kuru warriors retreating, the Pāṇḍavas, too, had their own soldiers withdraw, using messengers with swift horses.
विनिवृत्तेषु सैन्येषु पारंपर्येण सर्वशः ।
विमुक्तकवचाः सर्वे भीष्ममीयुर्नराधिपाः ॥२७॥
27. vinivṛtteṣu sainyeṣu pāraṁparyeṇa sarvaśaḥ ,
vimuktakavacāḥ sarve bhīṣmamīyurnarādhipāḥ.
27. vinivṛtteṣu sainyeṣu pāramvaryeṇa sarvaśaḥ
vimuktakavacāḥ sarve bhīṣmam īyuḥ narādhipāḥ
27. sainyeṣu vinivṛtteṣu sarvaśaḥ pāramvaryeṇa
sarve vimuktakavacāḥ narādhipāḥ bhīṣmam īyuḥ
27. After all the armies had successively withdrawn, all the kings removed their armors and approached Bhīṣma.
व्युपारम्य ततो युद्धाद्योधाः शतसहस्रशः ।
उपतस्थुर्महात्मानं प्रजापतिमिवामराः ॥२८॥
28. vyupāramya tato yuddhādyodhāḥ śatasahasraśaḥ ,
upatasthurmahātmānaṁ prajāpatimivāmarāḥ.
28. vyupāramya tataḥ yuddhāt yodhāḥ śatasahasraśaḥ
upatasthuḥ mahātmānam prajāpatim iva amarāḥ
28. śatasahasraśaḥ yodhāḥ tataḥ yuddhāt vyupāramya
amarāḥ prajāpatim iva mahātmānam upatasthuḥ
28. Having ceased from the battle, hundreds of thousands of warriors then approached the great soul (mahātman) (Bhīṣma), just as the immortal gods approach Prajāpati.
ते तु भीष्मं समासाद्य शयानं भरतर्षभम् ।
अभिवाद्य व्यतिष्ठन्त पाण्डवाः कुरुभिः सह ॥२९॥

abhivādya vyatiṣṭhanta pāṇḍavāḥ kurubhiḥ saha.

29. But those warriors, including the Pāṇḍavas and the Kurus, approached Bhīṣma, the foremost among the Bhāratas, as he lay there, then saluted him and stood around.
अथ पाण्डून्कुरूंश्चैव प्रणिपत्याग्रतः स्थितान् ।
अभ्यभाषत धर्मात्मा भीष्मः शांतनवस्तदा ॥३०॥
30. atha pāṇḍūnkurūṁścaiva praṇipatyāgrataḥ sthitān ,
abhyabhāṣata dharmātmā bhīṣmaḥ śāṁtanavastadā.

30. Then, Bhishma, whose intrinsic nature (dharma) was righteousness, the son of Shantanu, bowed down to the Pāṇḍavas and Kurus who stood before him and addressed them.
स्वागतं वो महाभागाः स्वागतं वो महारथाः ।
तुष्यामि दर्शनाच्चाहं युष्माकममरोपमाः ॥३१॥
31. svāgataṁ vo mahābhāgāḥ svāgataṁ vo mahārathāḥ ,
tuṣyāmi darśanāccāhaṁ yuṣmākamamaropamāḥ.
31. svāgatam vaḥ mahābhāgāḥ svāgatam vaḥ mahārathāḥ

31. Welcome to you, O noble ones! Welcome to you, O great charioteers! I am indeed pleased by your sight, O god-like ones.
अभिनन्द्य स तानेवं शिरसा लम्बताब्रवीत् ।
शिरो मे लम्बतेऽत्यर्थमुपधानं प्रदीयताम् ॥३२॥
32. abhinandya sa tānevaṁ śirasā lambatābravīt ,
śiro me lambate'tyarthamupadhānaṁ pradīyatām.

śiraḥ me lambate atyartham upadhānam pradīyatām

32. Having thus greeted them with his head bowed, he said: "My head is sinking greatly; let a pillow be provided."
ततो नृपाः समाजह्रुस्तनूनि च मृदूनि च ।
उपधानानि मुख्यानि नैच्छत्तानि पितामहः ॥३३॥
33. tato nṛpāḥ samājahrustanūni ca mṛdūni ca ,
upadhānāni mukhyāni naicchattāni pitāmahaḥ.

upadhānāni mukhyāni na aicchat tāni pitāmahaḥ

33. Thereupon, the kings brought many thin and soft pillows, and even excellent ones. However, the grandfather did not desire those.
अब्रवीच्च नरव्याघ्रः प्रहसन्निव तान्नृपान् ।
नैतानि वीरशय्यासु युक्तरूपाणि पार्थिवाः ॥३४॥
34. abravīcca naravyāghraḥ prahasanniva tānnṛpān ,
naitāni vīraśayyāsu yuktarūpāṇi pārthivāḥ.

34. And the tiger among men (naravyāghra), as if laughing, spoke to those kings: 'O kings, these circumstances are not fitting on the beds of heroes.'
ततो वीक्ष्य नरश्रेष्ठमभ्यभाषत पाण्डवम् ।
धनंजयं दीर्घबाहुं सर्वलोकमहारथम् ॥३५॥
35. tato vīkṣya naraśreṣṭhamabhyabhāṣata pāṇḍavam ,
dhanaṁjayaṁ dīrghabāhuṁ sarvalokamahāratham.

35. Then, having seen Dhananjaya, the long-armed son of Pāṇḍu (pāṇḍava), who was the best of men (naraśreṣṭha) and a great charioteer (mahāratha) in all worlds, he addressed him.
धनंजय महाबाहो शिरसो मेऽस्य लम्बतः ।
दीयतामुपधानं वै यद्युक्तमिह मन्यसे ॥३६॥
36. dhanaṁjaya mahābāho śiraso me'sya lambataḥ ,
dīyatāmupadhānaṁ vai yadyuktamiha manyase.
36. dhanañjaya mahābāho śirasaḥ me asya lambataḥ
| dīyatām upadhānam vai yat yuktam iha manyase
36. dhanañjaya mahābāho me asya śirasaḥ lambataḥ vai yat yuktam iha manyase,

36. O Dhananjaya, O mighty-armed (mahābāhu) one, my head is hanging low. Indeed, let an appropriate pillow be given here, whatever you deem suitable.
स संन्यस्य महच्चापमभिवाद्य पितामहम् ।
नेत्राभ्यामश्रुपूर्णाभ्यामिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥३७॥
37. sa saṁnyasya mahaccāpamabhivādya pitāmaham ,
netrābhyāmaśrupūrṇābhyāmidaṁ vacanamabravīt.

37. He (Arjuna), having laid down his great bow and paid respects to his grandfather (pitāmaha), spoke these words with eyes full of tears.
आज्ञापय कुरुश्रेष्ठ सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वर ।
प्रेष्योऽहं तव दुर्धर्ष क्रियतां किं पितामह ॥३८॥
38. ājñāpaya kuruśreṣṭha sarvaśastrabhṛtāṁ vara ,
preṣyo'haṁ tava durdharṣa kriyatāṁ kiṁ pitāmaha.
38. ājñāpaya kuruśreṣṭha sarvaśastrabhṛtām vara
preṣyaḥ aham tava durdharṣa kriyatām kim pitāmaha

38. O best among the Kurus, O best among all weapon-bearers, O unconquerable one, grandfather (pitāmaha)! I am your servant. What shall be done? Please command me.
तमब्रवीच्छांतनवः शिरो मे तात लम्बते ।
उपधानं कुरुश्रेष्ठ फल्गुनोपनयस्व मे ।
शयनस्यानुरूपं हि शीघ्रं वीर प्रयच्छ मे ॥३९॥
39. tamabravīcchāṁtanavaḥ śiro me tāta lambate ,
upadhānaṁ kuruśreṣṭha phalgunopanayasva me ,
śayanasyānurūpaṁ hi śīghraṁ vīra prayaccha me.
39. tam abravīt śāntanavaḥ śiraḥ me tāta
lambate upadhānam kuruśreṣṭha
phalguna upanayasva me śayanasya
anurūpam hi śīghram vīra prayaccha me

39. To him, the son of Śāntanu (Bhishma) said: 'My head, dear son, is drooping. O best among the Kurus, Arjuna, make a pillow for me. Indeed, O hero, quickly provide me with something suitable for my bed.'
त्वं हि पार्थ महाबाहो श्रेष्ठः सर्वधनुष्मताम् ।
क्षत्रधर्मस्य वेत्ता च बुद्धिसत्त्वगुणान्वितः ॥४०॥
40. tvaṁ hi pārtha mahābāho śreṣṭhaḥ sarvadhanuṣmatām ,
kṣatradharmasya vettā ca buddhisattvaguṇānvitaḥ.
40. tvam hi pārtha mahābāho śreṣṭhaḥ sarvadhanuṣmatām
kṣatradharmasya vettā ca buddhisattvaguṇānvitaḥ
40. pārtha mahābāho tvam hi sarvadhanuṣmatām śreṣṭhaḥ ca

40. Indeed, O Pārtha (Arjuna), O mighty-armed one, you are the best among all archers. You are also a knower of the warrior's natural law (dharma), endowed with the qualities of intelligence and goodness.
फल्गुनस्तु तथेत्युक्त्वा व्यवसायपुरोजवः ।
प्रगृह्यामन्त्र्य गाण्डीवं शरांश्च नतपर्वणः ॥४१॥
41. phalgunastu tathetyuktvā vyavasāyapurojavaḥ ,
pragṛhyāmantrya gāṇḍīvaṁ śarāṁśca nataparvaṇaḥ.
41. phalgunaḥ tu tathā iti uktvā vyavasāyapurōjavaḥ

41. But Arjuna, having said, 'So be it,' and driven by his resolve, took and invoked his Gāṇḍīva bow, as well as arrows with bent nodes.
अनुमान्य महात्मानं भरतानाममध्यमम् ।
त्रिभिस्तीक्ष्णैर्महावेगैरुदगृह्णाच्छिरः शरैः ॥४२॥
42. anumānya mahātmānaṁ bharatānāmamadhyamam ,
tribhistīkṣṇairmahāvegairudagṛhṇācchiraḥ śaraiḥ.
42. anumānya mahātmānam bharatānām amadhyamam tribhiḥ
tīkṣṇaiḥ mahāvegaiḥ udagṛhṇāt śiraḥ śaraiḥ

42. Having paid respects to the great-souled (mahātman) one, the foremost among the Bharatas, he (Arjuna) then supported his head with three sharp, very swift arrows.
अभिप्राये तु विदिते धर्मात्मा सव्यसाचिना ।
अतुष्यद्भरतश्रेष्ठो भीष्मो धर्मार्थतत्त्ववित् ॥४३॥
43. abhiprāye tu vidite dharmātmā savyasācinā ,
atuṣyadbharataśreṣṭho bhīṣmo dharmārthatattvavit.

43. But when the intention of the righteous-souled (dharmātman) Arjuna (Savyasācin) became known, Bhishma, the chief of the Bharatas and the knower of the true nature of natural law (dharma) and purpose (artha), was pleased.
उपधानेन दत्तेन प्रत्यनन्दद्धनंजयम् ।
कुन्तीपुत्रं युधां श्रेष्ठं सुहृदां प्रीतिवर्धनम् ॥४४॥
44. upadhānena dattena pratyanandaddhanaṁjayam ,
kuntīputraṁ yudhāṁ śreṣṭhaṁ suhṛdāṁ prītivardhanam.

44. With the provided pillow, he (Bhishma) welcomed Arjuna (Dhanañjaya), the son of Kunti, the foremost among warriors, who brought joy to his friends.
अनुरूपं शयानस्य पाण्डवोपहितं त्वया ।
यद्यन्यथा प्रवर्तेथाः शपेयं त्वामहं रुषा ॥४५॥
45. anurūpaṁ śayānasya pāṇḍavopahitaṁ tvayā ,
yadyanyathā pravartethāḥ śapeyaṁ tvāmahaṁ ruṣā.
45. anurūpam śayānasya pāṇḍava upahitam tvayā yadi
anyathā pravartethāḥ śapeyam tvām aham ruṣā
45. pāṇḍava,

45. O son of Pandu, this (support) provided by you is appropriate for one lying down. If you were to act otherwise, I would curse you with wrath.
एवमेतन्महाबाहो धर्मेषु परिनिष्ठितम् ।
स्वप्तव्यं क्षत्रियेणाजौ शरतल्पगतेन वै ॥४६॥
46. evametanmahābāho dharmeṣu pariniṣṭhitam ,
svaptavyaṁ kṣatriyeṇājau śaratalpagatena vai.
46. evam etat mahābāho dharmeṣu pariniṣṭhitam
svaptavyam kṣatriyeṇa ājau śaratapalagatena vai

46. O mighty-armed one, this is indeed firmly established in the natural law (dharma): a kṣatriya, lying on a bed of arrows in battle, ought to accept death.
एवमुक्त्वा तु बीभत्सुं सर्वांस्तानब्रवीद्वचः ।
राज्ञश्च राजपुत्रांश्च पाण्डवेनाभि संस्थितान् ॥४७॥
47. evamuktvā tu bībhatsuṁ sarvāṁstānabravīdvacaḥ ,
rājñaśca rājaputrāṁśca pāṇḍavenābhi saṁsthitān.
47. evam uktvā tu bhībhatsum sarvān tān abravīt vacaḥ
rājñaḥ ca rājaputrān ca pāṇḍavena abhi saṃsthitān

47. Having thus spoken to Bhībhatsu (Arjuna), he (Bhishma) then addressed these words to all those kings and princes who were positioned around the Pāṇḍava.
शयेयमस्यां शय्यायां यावदावर्तनं रवेः ।
ये तदा पारयिष्यन्ति ते मां द्रक्ष्यन्ति वै नृपाः ॥४८॥
48. śayeyamasyāṁ śayyāyāṁ yāvadāvartanaṁ raveḥ ,
ye tadā pārayiṣyanti te māṁ drakṣyanti vai nṛpāḥ.
48. śayeyam asyām śayyāyām yāvat āvartanam raveḥ ye
tadā pārayiṣyanti te mām drakṣyanti vai nṛpāḥ
48. asyām śayyāyām yāvat raveḥ āvartanam śayeyam
nṛpāḥ ye tadā pārayiṣyanti te vai mām drakṣyanti
48. I shall lie on this bed until the sun's turning (towards the northern course). O kings, those who are able to endure until then will indeed see me.
दिशं वैश्रवणाक्रान्तां यदा गन्ता दिवाकरः ।
अर्चिष्मान्प्रतपँल्लोकान्रथेनोत्तमतेजसा ।
विमोक्ष्येऽहं तदा प्राणान्सुहृदः सुप्रियानपि ॥४९॥
49. diśaṁ vaiśravaṇākrāntāṁ yadā gantā divākaraḥ ,
arciṣmānpratapaँllokānrathenottamatejasā ,
vimokṣye'haṁ tadā prāṇānsuhṛdaḥ supriyānapi.
49. diśam vaiśravaṇa ākrāntām yadā gantā
divākaraḥ arciṣmān pratapan lokān
rathena uttamatejasā vimokṣye
aham tadā prāṇān suhṛdaḥ supriyān api
49. yadā arciṣmān divākaraḥ uttamatejasā rathena lokān pratapan vaiśravaṇa ākrāntām diśam gantā,
tadā aham suhṛdaḥ supriyān api prāṇān vimokṣye
49. When the radiant sun, scorching the worlds with its supremely splendid chariot, will move towards the northern direction (governed by Vaiśravaṇa), then I shall release my life-breaths, even those that are dear and beloved.
परिखा खन्यतामत्र ममावसदने नृपाः ।
उपासिष्ये विवस्वन्तमेवं शरशताचितः ।
उपारमध्वं संग्रामाद्वैराण्युत्सृज्य पार्थिवाः ॥५०॥
50. parikhā khanyatāmatra mamāvasadane nṛpāḥ ,
upāsiṣye vivasvantamevaṁ śaraśatācitaḥ ,
upāramadhvaṁ saṁgrāmādvairāṇyutsṛjya pārthivāḥ.
50. parikhā khanyatām atra mama avasadane
nṛpāḥ upāsiṣye vivasvantam
evam śaraśatācitaḥ upāramadhvam
saṅgrāmāt vairāṇi utsṛjya pārthivāḥ

50. O kings, let a trench be dug here around my dwelling. Covered with hundreds of arrows, I will thus worship the sun (Vivasaṅvat). O rulers of the earth, give up your hostilities and cease from battle.
उपातिष्ठन्नथो वैद्याः शल्योद्धरणकोविदाः ।
सर्वोपकरणैर्युक्ताः कुशलास्ते सुशिक्षिताः ॥५१॥
51. upātiṣṭhannatho vaidyāḥ śalyoddharaṇakovidāḥ ,
sarvopakaraṇairyuktāḥ kuśalāste suśikṣitāḥ.

51. Then, physicians arrived, skilled in removing arrows and equipped with all necessary instruments. They were indeed skillful and well-trained.
तान्दृष्ट्वा जाह्नवीपुत्रः प्रोवाच वचनं तदा ।
दत्तदेया विसृज्यन्तां पूजयित्वा चिकित्सकाः ॥५२॥
52. tāndṛṣṭvā jāhnavīputraḥ provāca vacanaṁ tadā ,
dattadeyā visṛjyantāṁ pūjayitvā cikitsakāḥ.
52. tān dṛṣṭvā jāhnavīputraḥ provāca vacanam tadā
dattadeyāḥ visṛjyantām pūjayitvā cikitsakāḥ

52. Seeing them, Bhīṣma, the son of Jahnu, then spoke these words: 'Let the physicians be honored, and let those whose fees have been given be dismissed.'
एवंगते न हीदानीं वैद्यैः कार्यमिहास्ति मे ।
क्षत्रधर्मप्रशस्तां हि प्राप्तोऽस्मि परमां गतिम् ॥५३॥
53. evaṁgate na hīdānīṁ vaidyaiḥ kāryamihāsti me ,
kṣatradharmapraśastāṁ hi prāpto'smi paramāṁ gatim.
53. evam gate na hi idānīm vaidyaiḥ kāryam iha asti me
kṣatradharmapraśastām hi prāptaḥ asmi parām gatim

53. Since things are thus, indeed, I now have no need for physicians here. For I have attained the supreme state, glorified by the "dharma" (natural law) of a warrior.
नैष धर्मो महीपालाः शरतल्पगतस्य मे ।
एतैरेव शरैश्चाहं दग्धव्योऽन्ते नराधिपाः ॥५४॥
54. naiṣa dharmo mahīpālāḥ śaratalpagatasya me ,
etaireva śaraiścāhaṁ dagdhavyo'nte narādhipāḥ.
54. na eṣaḥ dharmaḥ mahīpālāḥ śaratpalpagatasya me
etaiḥ eva śaraiḥ ca aham dagdhavyaḥ ante narādhipāḥ
54. mahīpālāḥ narādhipāḥ eṣaḥ na dharmaḥ me śaratpalpagatasya
aham etaiḥ eva śaraiḥ ca ante dagdhavyaḥ
54. O kings! This is not the proper conduct (dharma) for me, who lies on a bed of arrows. O rulers of men, I am to be cremated at the end by these very arrows.
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य पुत्रो दुर्योधनस्तव ।
वैद्यान्विसर्जयामास पूजयित्वा यथार्हतः ॥५५॥
55. tacchrutvā vacanaṁ tasya putro duryodhanastava ,
vaidyānvisarjayāmāsa pūjayitvā yathārhataḥ.
55. tat śrutvā vacanam tasya putraḥ duryodhanaḥ tava
vaidyān visarjayāmāsa pūjayitvā yathā arhataḥ
55. tava putraḥ duryodhanaḥ tat tasya vacanam śrutvā

55. Having heard that speech of his, your son Duryodhana respectfully dispatched physicians, honoring them as was appropriate.
ततस्ते विस्मयं जग्मुर्नानाजनपदेश्वराः ।
स्थितिं धर्मे परां दृष्ट्वा भीष्मस्यामिततेजसः ॥५६॥
56. tataste vismayaṁ jagmurnānājanapadeśvarāḥ ,
sthitiṁ dharme parāṁ dṛṣṭvā bhīṣmasyāmitatejasaḥ.
56. tataḥ te vismayam jagmuḥ nānājanapadeśvarāḥ
sthitim dharme parām dṛṣṭvā bhīṣmasya amitatejasaḥ
56. tataḥ te nānājanapadeśvarāḥ vismayam jagmuḥ
bhīṣmasya amitatejasaḥ parām dharme sthitim dṛṣṭvā
56. Then those rulers of various regions were struck with wonder, seeing the supreme steadfastness in proper conduct (dharma) of Bhishma, whose brilliance was immeasurable.
उपधानं ततो दत्त्वा पितुस्तव जनेश्वर ।
सहिताः पाण्डवाः सर्वे कुरवश्च महारथाः ॥५७॥
57. upadhānaṁ tato dattvā pitustava janeśvara ,
sahitāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ sarve kuravaśca mahārathāḥ.

57. tataḥ janeśvara sarve pāṇḍavāḥ ca mahārathāḥ
kuravaḥ sahitāḥ tava pituḥ upadhānam dattvā
57. Then, O lord of men, all the Pandavas and the great chariot-warrior Kurus, having given a pillow to your father, assembled together.
उपगम्य महात्मानं शयानं शयने शुभे ।
तेऽभिवाद्य ततो भीष्मं कृत्वा चाभिप्रदक्षिणम् ॥५८॥
58. upagamya mahātmānaṁ śayānaṁ śayane śubhe ,
te'bhivādya tato bhīṣmaṁ kṛtvā cābhipradakṣiṇam.

58. They approached the great-souled (mahātman) Bhishma, who was lying on an excellent bed, and then, after saluting him, they performed a reverent circumambulation (abhipradakṣiṇam).
विधाय रक्षां भीष्मस्य सर्व एव समन्ततः ।
वीराः स्वशिबिराण्येव ध्यायन्तः परमातुराः ।
निवेशायाभ्युपागच्छन्सायाह्ने रुधिरोक्षिताः ॥५९॥
59. vidhāya rakṣāṁ bhīṣmasya sarva eva samantataḥ ,
vīrāḥ svaśibirāṇyeva dhyāyantaḥ paramāturāḥ ,
niveśāyābhyupāgacchansāyāhne rudhirokṣitāḥ.

59. All those blood-stained warriors, extremely distressed and contemplating (dhyāna) deeply, arranged protection for Bhishma from all sides. Then, in the evening, they returned to their own camps for encampment.
निविष्टान्पाण्डवांश्चापि प्रीयमाणान्महारथान् ।
भीष्मस्य पतनाद्धृष्टानुपगम्य महारथान् ।
उवाच यादवः काले धर्मपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥६०॥
60. niviṣṭānpāṇḍavāṁścāpi prīyamāṇānmahārathān ,
bhīṣmasya patanāddhṛṣṭānupagamya mahārathān ,
uvāca yādavaḥ kāle dharmaputraṁ yudhiṣṭhiram.
60. niviṣṭān pāṇḍavān ca api prīyamāṇān
mahārathān bhīṣmasya patanāt hṛṣṭān
upagamya mahārathān uvāca yādavaḥ
kāle dharmaputram yudhiṣṭhiram

mahārathān pāṇḍavān upagamya
dharmaputram yudhiṣṭhiram uvāca
60. The Yādava (Krishna), approaching the great charioteers (mahāratha), the Pāṇḍavas, who were encamped, rejoicing, and delighted by the fall of Bhishma, spoke to Yudhishthira, the son of Dharma (dharma), at the opportune moment.
दिष्ट्या जयसि कौरव्य दिष्ट्या भीष्मो निपातितः ।
अवध्यो मानुषैरेष सत्यसंधो महारथः ॥६१॥
61. diṣṭyā jayasi kauravya diṣṭyā bhīṣmo nipātitaḥ ,
avadhyo mānuṣaireṣa satyasaṁdho mahārathaḥ.
61. diṣṭyā jayasi kauravya diṣṭyā bhīṣmaḥ nipātitaḥ
avadhyaḥ mānuṣaiḥ eṣaḥ satyasaṃdhaḥ mahārathaḥ

eṣaḥ satyasaṃdhaḥ mahārathaḥ mānuṣaiḥ avadhyaḥ
61. Fortunately, O scion of Kuru, you are victorious! Fortunately, Bhishma has been brought down. This great charioteer (mahāratha), who was true to his vow, was indeed invincible by human beings.
अथ वा दैवतैः पार्थ सर्वशस्त्रास्त्रपारगः ।
त्वां तु चक्षुर्हणं प्राप्य दग्धो घोरेण चक्षुषा ॥६२॥
62. atha vā daivataiḥ pārtha sarvaśastrāstrapāragaḥ ,
tvāṁ tu cakṣurhaṇaṁ prāpya dagdho ghoreṇa cakṣuṣā.

62. Or else, O Pārtha (Arjuna), even a warrior proficient in all weapons and missiles, (being helped) by the gods, upon encountering you, who are like a killer with your gaze, was burnt by a dreadful eye.
एवमुक्तो धर्मराजः प्रत्युवाच जनार्दनम् ।
तव प्रसादाद्विजयः क्रोधात्तव पराजयः ।
त्वं हि नः शरणं कृष्ण भक्तानामभयंकरः ॥६३॥
63. evamukto dharmarājaḥ pratyuvāca janārdanam ,
tava prasādādvijayaḥ krodhāttava parājayaḥ ,
tvaṁ hi naḥ śaraṇaṁ kṛṣṇa bhaktānāmabhayaṁkaraḥ.
63. evam uktaḥ dharmarājaḥ pratyuvāca
janārdanam tava prasādāt vijayaḥ
krodhāt tava parājayaḥ tvam hi naḥ
śaraṇam kṛṣṇa bhaktānām abhayaṃkaraḥ

pratyuvāca tava prasādāt vijayaḥ
tava krodhāt parājayaḥ kṛṣṇa hi tvam
naḥ śaraṇam bhaktānām abhayaṃkaraḥ
63. Thus addressed, Dharmarāja (Yudhiṣṭhira) replied to Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa): 'From your grace comes victory, and from your anger comes defeat. Indeed, O Kṛṣṇa, you are our refuge, the one who grants fearlessness to devotees.'
अनाश्चर्यो जयस्तेषां येषां त्वमसि केशव ।
रक्षिता समरे नित्यं नित्यं चापि हिते रतः ।
सर्वथा त्वां समासाद्य नाश्चर्यमिति मे मतिः ॥६४॥
64. anāścaryo jayasteṣāṁ yeṣāṁ tvamasi keśava ,
rakṣitā samare nityaṁ nityaṁ cāpi hite rataḥ ,
sarvathā tvāṁ samāsādya nāścaryamiti me matiḥ.
64. anāścaryaḥ jayaḥ teṣām yeṣām tvam
asi keśava rakṣitā samare nityam nityam
ca api hite rataḥ sarvathā tvām
samāsādya na āścaryam iti me matiḥ
64. keśava yeṣām tvam asi teṣām jayaḥ
anāścaryaḥ samare nityam rakṣitā ca
nityam api hite rataḥ sarvathā tvām
samāsādya na āścaryam iti me matiḥ
64. Their victory is no surprise, O Keśava, for those whose side you are on. You are always a protector in battle, and always devoted to their welfare. Therefore, having certainly attained you, it is no surprise – this is my conviction.
एवमुक्तः प्रत्युवाच स्मयमानो जनार्दनः ।
त्वय्येवैतद्युक्तरूपं वचनं पार्थिवोत्तम ॥६५॥
65. evamuktaḥ pratyuvāca smayamāno janārdanaḥ ,
tvayyevaitadyuktarūpaṁ vacanaṁ pārthivottama.

tvayi eva etat yuktarūpam vacanam pārthivottama

65. Thus addressed, Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa), smiling, replied: 'This statement, O best of kings, is indeed appropriate for you.'
