मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
अथ मद्राधिपो राजा नारदेन समागतः ।
उपविष्टः सभामध्ये कथायोगेन भारत ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
atha madrādhipo rājā nāradena samāgataḥ ,
upaviṣṭaḥ sabhāmadhye kathāyogena bhārata.

samāgataḥ upaviṣṭaḥ sabhāmadhye kathāyogena bhārata
1. Mārkaṇḍeya said: "Now, O Bhārata, the king of Madra, accompanied by Nārada, was seated in the assembly hall engaged in conversation."
ततोऽभिगम्य तीर्थानि सर्वाण्येवाश्रमांस्तथा ।
आजगाम पितुर्वेश्म सावित्री सह मन्त्रिभिः ॥२॥
2. tato'bhigamya tīrthāni sarvāṇyevāśramāṁstathā ,
ājagāma piturveśma sāvitrī saha mantribhiḥ.
2. tataḥ abhigamya tīrthāni sarvāṇi eva āśramān
tathā ājagāma pituḥ veśma sāvitrī saha mantribhiḥ
2. Then, having visited all the holy places and hermitages, Savitri returned to her father's house with her ministers.
नारदेन सहासीनं दृष्ट्वा सा पितरं शुभा ।
उभयोरेव शिरसा चक्रे पादाभिवन्दनम् ॥३॥
3. nāradena sahāsīnaṁ dṛṣṭvā sā pitaraṁ śubhā ,
ubhayoreva śirasā cakre pādābhivandanam.
3. nāradena saha āsīnam dṛṣṭvā sā pitaram śubhā
ubhayoḥ eva śirasā cakre pādābhivandanam
3. The auspicious Savitri, having seen her father seated with Narada, prostrated herself by bowing her head at the feet of both of them.
नारद उवाच ।
क्व गताभूत्सुतेयं ते कुतश्चैवागता नृप ।
किमर्थं युवतीं भर्त्रे न चैनां संप्रयच्छसि ॥४॥
4. nārada uvāca ,
kva gatābhūtsuteyaṁ te kutaścaivāgatā nṛpa ,
kimarthaṁ yuvatīṁ bhartre na caināṁ saṁprayacchasi.
4. nārada uvāca kva gatā abhūt sutā iyam te kutaḥ ca eva āgatā
nṛpa kimartham yuvatīm bhartre na ca enām saṃprayacchasi
4. Narada said, "Where had this daughter of yours gone, O King, and from where has she returned? Why do you not give this young woman to a husband?"
अश्वपतिरुवाच ।
कार्येण खल्वनेनैव प्रेषिताद्यैव चागता ।
तदस्याः शृणु देवर्षे भर्तारं योऽनया वृतः ॥५॥
5. aśvapatiruvāca ,
kāryeṇa khalvanenaiva preṣitādyaiva cāgatā ,
tadasyāḥ śṛṇu devarṣe bhartāraṁ yo'nayā vṛtaḥ.
5. aśvapatiḥ uvāca kāryeṇa khalu anena eva preşitā adya eva
ca āgatā tat asyāḥ śṛṇu devarṣe bhartāram yaḥ anayā vṛtaḥ
5. Ashvapati replied, "Indeed, she was sent out for this very purpose, and she has just returned today. Therefore, O divine sage, listen to whom she has chosen as her husband."
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
सा ब्रूहि विस्तरेणेति पित्रा संचोदिता शुभा ।
दैवतस्येव वचनं प्रतिगृह्येदमब्रवीत् ॥६॥
6. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
sā brūhi vistareṇeti pitrā saṁcoditā śubhā ,
daivatasyeva vacanaṁ pratigṛhyedamabravīt.
6. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca sā brūhi vistareṇa iti pitrā saṃcoditā
śubhā daivatasya iva vacanaṃ pratigṛhya idam abravīt
6. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Urged by her father with the words "Speak in detail," the auspicious lady, accepting his command as if it were a deity's instruction, spoke the following.
आसीच्छाल्वेषु धर्मात्मा क्षत्रियः पृथिवीपतिः ।
द्युमत्सेन इति ख्यातः पश्चादन्धो बभूव ह ॥७॥
7. āsīcchālveṣu dharmātmā kṣatriyaḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ ,
dyumatsena iti khyātaḥ paścādandho babhūva ha.
7. āsīt śālveṣu dharmātmā kṣatriyaḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ
dyumatsena iti khyātaḥ paścāt andhaḥ babhūva ha
7. There was a king among the Śālvas, a kṣatriya with a righteous soul (dharmātman) and lord of the earth, known as Dyumatsena. Afterwards, he indeed became blind.
विनष्टचक्षुषस्तस्य बालपुत्रस्य धीमतः ।
सामीप्येन हृतं राज्यं छिद्रेऽस्मिन्पूर्ववैरिणा ॥८॥
8. vinaṣṭacakṣuṣastasya bālaputrasya dhīmataḥ ,
sāmīpyena hṛtaṁ rājyaṁ chidre'sminpūrvavairiṇā.
8. vinaṣṭacakṣuṣaḥ tasya bālaputrasya dhīmataḥ
sāmīpyena hṛtaṃ rājyaṃ chidre asmin pūrvavairiṇā
8. While that wise king was blind and his intelligent son was still a child, a former enemy, seizing this opportunity (chidre) through their vulnerable state (sāmīpyena), took his kingdom.
स बालवत्सया सार्धं भार्यया प्रस्थितो वनम् ।
महारण्यगतश्चापि तपस्तेपे महाव्रतः ॥९॥
9. sa bālavatsayā sārdhaṁ bhāryayā prasthito vanam ,
mahāraṇyagataścāpi tapastepe mahāvrataḥ.
9. sa bālavatsayā sārdhaṃ bhāryayā prasthitaḥ vanam
mahāraṇyagataḥ ca api tapaḥ tepe mahāvrataḥ
9. He, along with his wife and their young child, departed for the forest. Having arrived in the great forest, that man of great vows performed severe austerities (tapas).
तस्य पुत्रः पुरे जातः संवृद्धश्च तपोवने ।
सत्यवाननुरूपो मे भर्तेति मनसा वृतः ॥१०॥
10. tasya putraḥ pure jātaḥ saṁvṛddhaśca tapovane ,
satyavānanurūpo me bharteti manasā vṛtaḥ.
10. tasya putraḥ pure jātaḥ saṃvṛddhaḥ ca tapovane
| satyavān anurūpaḥ me bhartā iti manasā vṛtaḥ
10. Satyavān, his son, who was born in the city and brought up in a hermitage, has been chosen by me in my mind as a suitable husband.
नारद उवाच ।
अहो बत महत्पापं सावित्र्या नृपते कृतम् ।
अजानन्त्या यदनया गुणवान्सत्यवान्वृतः ॥११॥
11. nārada uvāca ,
aho bata mahatpāpaṁ sāvitryā nṛpate kṛtam ,
ajānantyā yadanayā guṇavānsatyavānvṛtaḥ.
11. nāradaḥ uvāca | aho bata mahat pāpam sāvitryā nṛpate
kṛtam | ajānantyā yat anayā guṇavān satyavān vṛtaḥ
11. Nārada said, 'Oh, alas, O King, Sāvitrī has unknowingly committed a great misfortune (pāpa) by choosing the virtuous Satyavān.'
सत्यं वदत्यस्य पिता सत्यं माता प्रभाषते ।
ततोऽस्य ब्राह्मणाश्चक्रुर्नामैतत्सत्यवानिति ॥१२॥
12. satyaṁ vadatyasya pitā satyaṁ mātā prabhāṣate ,
tato'sya brāhmaṇāścakrurnāmaitatsatyavāniti.
12. satyam vadati asya pitā satyam mātā prabhāṣate |
tataḥ asya brāhmaṇāḥ cakruḥ nāma etat satyavān iti
12. His father speaks the truth, and his mother also speaks the truth; hence, the Brāhmaṇas gave him the name Satyavān.
बालस्याश्वाः प्रियाश्चास्य करोत्यश्वांश्च मृन्मयान् ।
चित्रेऽपि च लिखत्यश्वांश्चित्राश्व इति चोच्यते ॥१३॥
13. bālasyāśvāḥ priyāścāsya karotyaśvāṁśca mṛnmayān ,
citre'pi ca likhatyaśvāṁścitrāśva iti cocyate.
13. bālasya aśvāḥ priyāḥ ca asya karoti aśvān ca mṛnmayān
| citre api ca likhati aśvān ca citrāśvaḥ iti ca ucyate
13. Horses were dear to the boy, and he used to make clay horses. He also drew horses in pictures, and so he was called Citrāśva.
राजोवाच ।
अपीदानीं स तेजस्वी बुद्धिमान्वा नृपात्मजः ।
क्षमावानपि वा शूरः सत्यवान्पितृनन्दनः ॥१४॥
14. rājovāca ,
apīdānīṁ sa tejasvī buddhimānvā nṛpātmajaḥ ,
kṣamāvānapi vā śūraḥ satyavānpitṛnandanaḥ.
14. rājaḥ uvāca | api idānīm saḥ tejasvī buddhimān vā
nṛpa-ātmajaḥ | kṣamāvān api vā śūraḥ satyavān pitṛ-nandanaḥ
14. The King said, "Is that son of the king now glorious (tejasvin), intelligent, forbearing, brave, and truthful, the delight of his father?"
नारद उवाच ।
विवस्वानिव तेजस्वी बृहस्पतिसमो मतौ ।
महेन्द्र इव शूरश्च वसुधेव क्षमान्वितः ॥१५॥
15. nārada uvāca ,
vivasvāniva tejasvī bṛhaspatisamo matau ,
mahendra iva śūraśca vasudheva kṣamānvitaḥ.
15. nāradaḥ uvāca | vivasvān iva tejasvī bṛhaspati-samaḥ
matau | mahendraḥ iva śūraḥ ca vasudhā iva kṣamā-anvitaḥ
15. Nārada said, "He is glorious (tejasvin) like Vivasvān (the Sun god), equal to Bṛhaspati in intellect, brave like Mahendra (Indra), and endowed with forbearance like the earth (vasudhā)."
अश्वपतिरुवाच ।
अपि राजात्मजो दाता ब्रह्मण्यो वापि सत्यवान् ।
रूपवानप्युदारो वाप्यथ वा प्रियदर्शनः ॥१६॥
16. aśvapatiruvāca ,
api rājātmajo dātā brahmaṇyo vāpi satyavān ,
rūpavānapyudāro vāpyatha vā priyadarśanaḥ.
16. aśvapatiḥ uvāca | api rāja-ātmajaḥ dātā brāhmaṇyaḥ vā api
satyavān | rūpavat api udāraḥ vā api atha vā priya-darśanaḥ
16. King Aśvapati said, "Is that prince (rājātmaja) generous, respectful of Brahmins, truthful, handsome, noble, or pleasant to behold?"
नारद उवाच ।
साङ्कृते रन्तिदेवस्य स शक्त्या दानतः समः ।
ब्रह्मण्यः सत्यवादी च शिबिरौशीनरो यथा ॥१७॥
17. nārada uvāca ,
sāṅkṛte rantidevasya sa śaktyā dānataḥ samaḥ ,
brahmaṇyaḥ satyavādī ca śibirauśīnaro yathā.
17. nāradaḥ uvāca | sāṅkṛteḥ ranti-devasya saḥ śaktyā dānataḥ
samaḥ | brāhmaṇyaḥ satya-vādī ca śibiḥ auśīnaraḥ yathā
17. Nārada said, "He is equal to Sāṅkṛti and Rantideva in might (śakti) and in generosity (dāna); he is respectful of Brahmins and truthful, just like Śibi Auśīnara."
ययातिरिव चोदारः सोमवत्प्रियदर्शनः ।
रूपेणान्यतमोऽश्विभ्यां द्युमत्सेनसुतो बली ॥१८॥
18. yayātiriva codāraḥ somavatpriyadarśanaḥ ,
rūpeṇānyatamo'śvibhyāṁ dyumatsenasuto balī.
18. yayātiḥ iva ca udāraḥ somavat priyadarśanaḥ
rūpeṇa anyatamaḥ aśvibhyām dyumatsenasutaḥ balī
18. Dyumatsena's strong son is noble like Yayāti and as pleasing to behold as Soma (the moon). In form, he is unparalleled, comparable to one of the Ashvins.
स दान्तः स मृदुः शूरः स सत्यः स जितेन्द्रियः ।
स मैत्रः सोऽनसूयश्च स ह्रीमान्धृतिमांश्च सः ॥१९॥
19. sa dāntaḥ sa mṛduḥ śūraḥ sa satyaḥ sa jitendriyaḥ ,
sa maitraḥ so'nasūyaśca sa hrīmāndhṛtimāṁśca saḥ.
19. sa dāntaḥ sa mṛduḥ śūraḥ sa satyaḥ sa jitendriyaḥ sa
maitraḥ saḥ anasūyaḥ ca sa hrīmān dhṛtimān ca saḥ
19. He is self-controlled, gentle, and brave. He is truthful and has conquered his senses. He is friendly, free from envy, modest, and resolute.
नित्यशश्चार्जवं तस्मिन्स्थितिस्तस्यैव च ध्रुवा ।
संक्षेपतस्तपोवृद्धैः शीलवृद्धैश्च कथ्यते ॥२०॥
20. nityaśaścārjavaṁ tasminsthitistasyaiva ca dhruvā ,
saṁkṣepatastapovṛddhaiḥ śīlavṛddhaiśca kathyate.
20. nityaśaḥ ca ārjavam tasmin sthitiḥ tasya eva ca dhruvā
saṃkṣepataḥ tapovṛddhaiḥ śīlavṛddhaiḥ ca kathyate
20. And in him there is constant honesty, and his steadfastness is unwavering. In brief, he is thus described by those advanced in ascetic practices (tapas) and those mature in good conduct.
अश्वपतिरुवाच ।
गुणैरुपेतं सर्वैस्तं भगवन्प्रब्रवीषि मे ।
दोषानप्यस्य मे ब्रूहि यदि सन्तीह केचन ॥२१॥
21. aśvapatiruvāca ,
guṇairupetaṁ sarvaistaṁ bhagavanprabravīṣi me ,
doṣānapyasya me brūhi yadi santīha kecana.
21. aśvapatiḥ uvāca guṇaiḥ upetam sarvaiḥ tam bhagavan
prabravīṣi me doṣān api asya me brūhi yadi santi iha kecana
21. Ashvapati said: 'O venerable one, you describe him to me as endowed with all virtues. Please tell me also his faults, if there are any.'
नारद उवाच ।
एको दोषोऽस्य नान्योऽस्ति सोऽद्य प्रभृति सत्यवान् ।
संवत्सरेण क्षीणायुर्देहन्यासं करिष्यति ॥२२॥
22. nārada uvāca ,
eko doṣo'sya nānyo'sti so'dya prabhṛti satyavān ,
saṁvatsareṇa kṣīṇāyurdehanyāsaṁ kariṣyati.
22. nārada uvāca ekaḥ doṣaḥ asya na anyaḥ asti saḥ adya
prabhṛti satyavān saṃvatsareṇa kṣīṇāyuḥ dehanāsam kariṣyati
22. Nārada said, "He has only one flaw (doṣa); there is no other. From today, Satyavān, whose lifespan will be exhausted within a year, will abandon his body (die)."
राजोवाच ।
एहि सावित्रि गच्छ त्वमन्यं वरय शोभने ।
तस्य दोषो महानेको गुणानाक्रम्य तिष्ठति ॥२३॥
23. rājovāca ,
ehi sāvitri gaccha tvamanyaṁ varaya śobhane ,
tasya doṣo mahāneko guṇānākramya tiṣṭhati.
23. rājā uvāca ehi sāvitri gaccha tvam anyam varaya
śobhane tasya doṣaḥ mahān ekaḥ guṇān ākramya tiṣṭhati
23. The King said, "Sāvitrī, come, you must go and choose another husband, O beautiful one. His one great flaw (doṣa) overshadows all his good qualities."
यथा मे भगवानाह नारदो देवसत्कृतः ।
संवत्सरेण सोऽल्पायुर्देहन्यासं करिष्यति ॥२४॥
24. yathā me bhagavānāha nārado devasatkṛtaḥ ,
saṁvatsareṇa so'lpāyurdehanyāsaṁ kariṣyati.
24. yathā me bhagavān āha nāradaḥ devasatkrtaḥ
saṃvatsareṇa saḥ alpāyuḥ dehanāsam kariṣyati
24. Just as the revered Nārada, honored by the gods, told me, 'Within a year, he (Satyavān) will become short-lived and abandon his body (die).'
सावित्र्युवाच ।
सकृदंशो निपतति सकृत्कन्या प्रदीयते ।
सकृदाह ददानीति त्रीण्येतानि सकृत्सकृत् ॥२५॥
25. sāvitryuvāca ,
sakṛdaṁśo nipatati sakṛtkanyā pradīyate ,
sakṛdāha dadānīti trīṇyetāni sakṛtsakṛt.
25. sāvitrī uvāca sakṛt aṃśaḥ nipatati sakṛt kanyā
pradīyate sakṛt āha dadāmi iti trīṇi etāni sakṛt sakṛt
25. Sāvitrī said, "A share (of inheritance) is allotted only once. A maiden is given (in marriage) only once. And one says 'I give' only once. These three things occur just once each."
दीर्घायुरथ वाल्पायुः सगुणो निर्गुणोऽपि वा ।
सकृद्वृतो मया भर्ता न द्वितीयं वृणोम्यहम् ॥२६॥
26. dīrghāyuratha vālpāyuḥ saguṇo nirguṇo'pi vā ,
sakṛdvṛto mayā bhartā na dvitīyaṁ vṛṇomyaham.
26. dīrghāyuḥ atha vā alpāyuḥ saguṇaḥ nirguṇaḥ api vā
sakṛt vṛtaḥ mayā bhartā na dvitīyam vṛṇomi aham
26. Whether he is long-lived or short-lived, virtuous or even without virtues, I have chosen him as my husband once, and I will not choose a second.
मनसा निश्चयं कृत्वा ततो वाचाभिधीयते ।
क्रियते कर्मणा पश्चात्प्रमाणं मे मनस्ततः ॥२७॥
27. manasā niścayaṁ kṛtvā tato vācābhidhīyate ,
kriyate karmaṇā paścātpramāṇaṁ me manastataḥ.
27. manasā niścayam kṛtvā tataḥ vācā abhidhīyate
kriyate karmaṇā paścāt pramāṇam me manaḥ tataḥ
27. First, a decision is made by the mind; then it is expressed through speech; afterwards, it is accomplished by action (karma). Therefore, my mind is the ultimate authority (pramāṇa).
नारद उवाच ।
स्थिरा बुद्धिर्नरश्रेष्ठ सावित्र्या दुहितुस्तव ।
नैषा चालयितुं शक्या धर्मादस्मात्कथंचन ॥२८॥
28. nārada uvāca ,
sthirā buddhirnaraśreṣṭha sāvitryā duhitustava ,
naiṣā cālayituṁ śakyā dharmādasmātkathaṁcana.
28. nāradaḥ uvāca sthirā buddhiḥ naraśreṣṭha sāvitryāḥ duhituḥ
tava na eṣā cālayitum śakyā dharmāt asmāt kathaṃcana
28. Narada said: 'O best of men, your daughter Savitri's resolve (buddhi) is unshakeable. It is impossible to sway her in any way from this natural law (dharma).'
नान्यस्मिन्पुरुषे सन्ति ये सत्यवति वै गुणाः ।
प्रदानमेव तस्मान्मे रोचते दुहितुस्तव ॥२९॥
29. nānyasminpuruṣe santi ye satyavati vai guṇāḥ ,
pradānameva tasmānme rocate duhitustava.
29. na anyasmin puruṣe santi ye satyavati vai guṇāḥ
pradānam eva tasmāt me rocate duhituḥ tava
29. Narada continued: 'The virtues (guṇa) that are present in Satyavat are certainly not found in any other person (puruṣa). Therefore, bestowing your daughter (in marriage) upon him alone is pleasing to me.'
राजोवाच ।
अविचार्यमेतदुक्तं हि तथ्यं भगवता वचः ।
करिष्याम्येतदेवं च गुरुर्हि भगवान्मम ॥३०॥
30. rājovāca ,
avicāryametaduktaṁ hi tathyaṁ bhagavatā vacaḥ ,
kariṣyāmyetadevaṁ ca gururhi bhagavānmama.
30. rājā uvāca avicāryam etat uktam hi tathyam bhagavatā
vacaḥ kariṣyāmi etat evam ca guruḥ hi bhagavān mama
30. The king said, "Your Holiness, what you have said is indeed an indisputable truth. I will certainly do exactly as you have instructed, for Your Holiness is truly my preceptor (guru)."
नारद उवाच ।
अविघ्नमस्तु सावित्र्याः प्रदाने दुहितुस्तव ।
साधयिष्यामहे तावत्सर्वेषां भद्रमस्तु वः ॥३१॥
31. nārada uvāca ,
avighnamastu sāvitryāḥ pradāne duhitustava ,
sādhayiṣyāmahe tāvatsarveṣāṁ bhadramastu vaḥ.
31. nāradaḥ uvāca avighnam astu sāvitryāḥ pradāne duhituḥ
tava sādhayiṣyāmahe tāvat sarveṣām bhadram astu vaḥ
31. Nārada said, "May there be no obstacles in the giving of your daughter Sāvitrī. We shall now take our leave; may welfare be upon all of you."
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वा खमुत्पत्य नारदस्त्रिदिवं गतः ।
राजापि दुहितुः सर्वं वैवाहिकमकारयत् ॥३२॥
32. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
evamuktvā khamutpatya nāradastridivaṁ gataḥ ,
rājāpi duhituḥ sarvaṁ vaivāhikamakārayat.
32. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca evam uktvā kham utpatya nāradaḥ tridivam
gataḥ rājā api duhituḥ sarvam vaivāhikam akārayat
32. Mārkaṇḍeya said, "Having spoken thus, Nārada ascended into the sky and departed for heaven. The king, for his part, made all the necessary marriage arrangements for his daughter."
