बृहदश्व उवाच ।
दमयन्ती तु तच्छ्रुत्वा वचो हंसस्य भारत ।
तदा प्रभृति नस्वस्था नलं प्रति बभूव सा ॥१॥
1. bṛhadaśva uvāca ,
damayantī tu tacchrutvā vaco haṁsasya bhārata ,
tadā prabhṛti nasvasthā nalaṁ prati babhūva sā.

1. Bṛhadaśva said: 'O Bhārata, after hearing the swan's words, Damayantī became uneasy concerning Nala from that time onwards.'
ततश्चिन्तापरा दीना विवर्णवदना कृशा ।
बभूव दमयन्ती तु निःश्वासपरमा तदा ॥२॥
2. tataścintāparā dīnā vivarṇavadanā kṛśā ,
babhūva damayantī tu niḥśvāsaparamā tadā.

babhūva damayantī tu niḥśvāsaparamā tadā
2. Then, Damayantī, however, became absorbed in anxiety, miserable, pale-faced, and emaciated; she was sighing constantly at that time.
ऊर्ध्वदृष्टिर्ध्यानपरा बभूवोन्मत्तदर्शना ।
न शय्यासनभोगेषु रतिं विन्दति कर्हिचित् ॥३॥
3. ūrdhvadṛṣṭirdhyānaparā babhūvonmattadarśanā ,
na śayyāsanabhogeṣu ratiṁ vindati karhicit.
3. ūrdhvadṛṣṭiḥ dhyānaparā babhūva unmattadarśanā
na śayyāsanabhogeṣu ratim vindati karhicit
3. She stared upwards, absorbed in contemplation (dhyāna), and appeared like one who was mad. She never found delight in the comforts of bed or seat.
न नक्तं न दिवा शेते हा हेति वदती मुहुः ।
तामस्वस्थां तदाकारां सख्यस्ता जज्ञुरिङ्गितैः ॥४॥
4. na naktaṁ na divā śete hā heti vadatī muhuḥ ,
tāmasvasthāṁ tadākārāṁ sakhyastā jajñuriṅgitaiḥ.
4. na naktam na divā śete hā he iti vadatī muhuḥ tām
asvasthām tadākārām sakhyaḥ tāḥ jajñuḥ iṅgitaiḥ
4. She sleeps neither by night nor by day, repeatedly exclaiming, 'Alas! Alas!' Her female friends understood her unwell (asvasthā) state by her gestures.
ततो विदर्भपतये दमयन्त्याः सखीगणः ।
न्यवेदयत नस्वस्थां दमयन्तीं नरेश्वर ॥५॥
5. tato vidarbhapataye damayantyāḥ sakhīgaṇaḥ ,
nyavedayata nasvasthāṁ damayantīṁ nareśvara.
5. tataḥ vidarbhapataye damayantyāḥ sakhīgaṇaḥ
nyavedayat nasvasthām damayantīm nara īśvara
5. Then, the group of Damayantī's female friends reported to the lord of Vidarbha about the unwell Damayantī, O king (nareśvara).
तच्छ्रुत्वा नृपतिर्भीमो दमयन्तीसखीगणात् ।
चिन्तयामास तत्कार्यं सुमहत्स्वां सुतां प्रति ॥६॥
6. tacchrutvā nṛpatirbhīmo damayantīsakhīgaṇāt ,
cintayāmāsa tatkāryaṁ sumahatsvāṁ sutāṁ prati.
6. tat śrutvā nṛpatiḥ bhīmaḥ damayantyāḥ sakhīgaṇāt
cintayām āsa tat kāryam sumahat svām sutām prati
6. Having heard that, King Bhīma, from Damayantī's group of female friends, contemplated that very great task concerning his own daughter.
स समीक्ष्य महीपालः स्वां सुतां प्राप्तयौवनाम् ।
अपश्यदात्मनः कार्यं दमयन्त्याः स्वयंवरम् ॥७॥
7. sa samīkṣya mahīpālaḥ svāṁ sutāṁ prāptayauvanām ,
apaśyadātmanaḥ kāryaṁ damayantyāḥ svayaṁvaram.
7. sa samīkṣya mahīpālaḥ svām sutām prāptayauvanām
apaśyat ātmanaḥ kāryam damayantyāḥ svayamvaram
7. That king (mahīpāla), having observed his own daughter who had attained youth, considered the self-choice (svayaṃvara) of Damayantī as his duty (kārya).
स संनिपातयामास महीपालान्विशां पते ।
अनुभूयतामयं वीराः स्वयंवर इति प्रभो ॥८॥
8. sa saṁnipātayāmāsa mahīpālānviśāṁ pate ,
anubhūyatāmayaṁ vīrāḥ svayaṁvara iti prabho.
8. saḥ saṃnipātayāmāsa mahīpālān viśām pate |
anubhūyatām ayam vīrāḥ svayaṃvaraḥ iti prabho
8. O ruler of men, he assembled the kings, proclaiming, 'O heroes, let this self-choice marriage (svayaṃvara) be observed!'
श्रुत्वा तु पार्थिवाः सर्वे दमयन्त्याः स्वयंवरम् ।
अभिजग्मुस्तदा भीमं राजानो भीमशासनात् ॥९॥
9. śrutvā tu pārthivāḥ sarve damayantyāḥ svayaṁvaram ,
abhijagmustadā bhīmaṁ rājāno bhīmaśāsanāt.

| abhijagmuḥ tadā bhīmam rājānaḥ bhīmaśāsanāt
9. Indeed, having heard of Damayantī's self-choice marriage (svayaṃvara), all the kings then came to Bhīma, in accordance with Bhīma's decree.
हस्त्यश्वरथघोषेण नादयन्तो वसुंधराम् ।
विचित्रमाल्याभरणैर्बलैर्दृश्यैः स्वलंकृतैः ॥१०॥
10. hastyaśvarathaghoṣeṇa nādayanto vasuṁdharām ,
vicitramālyābharaṇairbalairdṛśyaiḥ svalaṁkṛtaiḥ.
10. hastyaśvarathaghoṣeṇa nādayantaḥ vasuṃdharām |
vicitramālyābharaṇaiḥ balaiḥ dṛśyaiḥ svalaṃkṛtaiḥ
10. They made the earth reverberate with the sounds of elephants, horses, and chariots, their magnificent and well-decorated forces (balaiḥ) adorned with diverse garlands and ornaments.
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु पुराणावृषिसत्तमौ ।
अटमानौ महात्मानाविन्द्रलोकमितो गतौ ॥११॥
11. etasminneva kāle tu purāṇāvṛṣisattamau ,
aṭamānau mahātmānāvindralokamito gatau.
11. etasmin eva kāle tu purāṇau ṛṣisattamau |
aṭamānau mahātmānau indralokam itaḥ gatau
11. Indeed, at this very time, two ancient and excellent sages (ṛṣisattama), who were also great souls (mahātman), departed from here, wandering, and reached Indra's world.
नारदः पर्वतश्चैव महात्मानौ महाव्रतौ ।
देवराजस्य भवनं विविशाते सुपूजितौ ॥१२॥
12. nāradaḥ parvataścaiva mahātmānau mahāvratau ,
devarājasya bhavanaṁ viviśāte supūjitau.
12. nāradaḥ parvataḥ ca eva mahātmānau mahāvratāu
devarājasya bhavanaṃ viviśāte supūjitāu
12. Nārada and Parvata, two great-souled sages observing great vows, entered the palace of the king of the gods, having been well-honored.
तावर्चित्वा सहस्राक्षस्ततः कुशलमव्ययम् ।
पप्रच्छानामयं चापि तयोः सर्वगतं विभुः ॥१३॥
13. tāvarcitvā sahasrākṣastataḥ kuśalamavyayam ,
papracchānāmayaṁ cāpi tayoḥ sarvagataṁ vibhuḥ.
13. tau arcayitvā sahasrākṣaḥ tataḥ kuśalam avyayam
papraccha anāmayam ca api tayoḥ sarvagataṃ vibhuḥ
13. Having honored them both, the thousand-eyed Indra, the powerful one (vibhu), then inquired about their imperishable and comprehensive well-being, as well as their health.
नारद उवाच ।
आवयोः कुशलं देव सर्वत्रगतमीश्वर ।
लोके च मघवन्कृत्स्ने नृपाः कुशलिनो विभो ॥१४॥
14. nārada uvāca ,
āvayoḥ kuśalaṁ deva sarvatragatamīśvara ,
loke ca maghavankṛtsne nṛpāḥ kuśalino vibho.
14. nāradaḥ uvāca āvayoḥ kuśalam deva sarvatragatam
īśvara loke ca maghavan kṛtsne nṛpāḥ kuśalinaḥ vibho
14. Nārada said: 'O God, O Lord (īśvara), our well-being is comprehensive. And O generous Indra, O powerful one (vibhu), the kings in the entire world are also well.'
बृहदश्व उवाच ।
नारदस्य वचः श्रुत्वा पप्रच्छ बलवृत्रहा ।
धर्मज्ञाः पृथिवीपालास्त्यक्तजीवितयोधिनः ॥१५॥
15. bṛhadaśva uvāca ,
nāradasya vacaḥ śrutvā papraccha balavṛtrahā ,
dharmajñāḥ pṛthivīpālāstyaktajīvitayodhinaḥ.
15. bṛhadaśvaḥ uvāca nāradasya vacaḥ śrutvā papraccha
balavṛtrahā dharmajñāḥ pṛthivīpālāḥ tyaktajīvitayodhinaḥ
15. Bṛhadaśva said: Having heard Nārada's words, Indra, the killer of Bala and Vṛtra, then inquired about the kings, who are knowers of natural law (dharma) and warriors willing to sacrifice their lives.
शस्त्रेण निधनं काले ये गच्छन्त्यपराङ्मुखाः ।
अयं लोकोऽक्षयस्तेषां यथैव मम कामधुक् ॥१६॥
16. śastreṇa nidhanaṁ kāle ye gacchantyaparāṅmukhāḥ ,
ayaṁ loko'kṣayasteṣāṁ yathaiva mama kāmadhuk.
16. śastreṇa nidhanam kāle ye gacchanti aparāṅmukhāḥ
ayam lokaḥ akṣayaḥ teṣām yathā eva mama kāmadhuk
16. Those who meet their death in battle, without turning their backs, attain this imperishable world, which is just like my wish-fulfilling cow (Kāmadhuk).
क्व नु ते क्षत्रियाः शूरा न हि पश्यामि तानहम् ।
आगच्छतो महीपालानतिथीन्दयितान्मम ॥१७॥
17. kva nu te kṣatriyāḥ śūrā na hi paśyāmi tānaham ,
āgacchato mahīpālānatithīndayitānmama.
17. kva nu te kṣatriyāḥ śūrāḥ na hi paśyāmi tān
aham āgacchataḥ mahīpālān atithīn dayitān mama
17. "Indeed, where are those brave warriors (kṣatriyas)? I certainly do not see those kings, my beloved guests, arriving now."
एवमुक्तस्तु शक्रेण नारदः प्रत्यभाषत ।
शृणु मे भगवन्येन न दृश्यन्ते महीक्षितः ॥१८॥
18. evamuktastu śakreṇa nāradaḥ pratyabhāṣata ,
śṛṇu me bhagavanyena na dṛśyante mahīkṣitaḥ.
18. evam uktaḥ tu śakreṇa nāradaḥ pratyabhāṣata
śṛṇu me bhagavan yena na dṛśyante mahīkṣitaḥ
18. When thus addressed by Indra (Śakra), Narada replied: "Listen to me, O revered one, to the reason why these kings are not seen."
विदर्भराजदुहिता दमयन्तीति विश्रुता ।
रूपेण समतिक्रान्ता पृथिव्यां सर्वयोषितः ॥१९॥
19. vidarbharājaduhitā damayantīti viśrutā ,
rūpeṇa samatikrāntā pṛthivyāṁ sarvayoṣitaḥ.
19. vidarbharājaduhitā damayantī iti viśrutā
rūpeṇa samatikrāntā pṛthivyām sarvayoṣitaḥ
19. The daughter of the King of Vidarbha, named Damayantī, was renowned. By her beauty, she surpassed all women on earth.
तस्याः स्वयंवरः शक्र भविता नचिरादिव ।
तत्र गच्छन्ति राजानो राजपुत्राश्च सर्वशः ॥२०॥
20. tasyāḥ svayaṁvaraḥ śakra bhavitā nacirādiva ,
tatra gacchanti rājāno rājaputrāśca sarvaśaḥ.
20. tasyāḥ svayaṃvaraḥ śakra bhavitā nacirāt iva
tatra gacchanti rājānaḥ rājaputrāḥ ca sarvaśaḥ
20. O Śakra, her self-choice marriage (svayaṃvara) will take place very soon. Kings and princes are going there from all directions.
तां रत्नभूतां लोकस्य प्रार्थयन्तो महीक्षितः ।
काङ्क्षन्ति स्म विशेषेण बलवृत्रनिषूदन ॥२१॥
21. tāṁ ratnabhūtāṁ lokasya prārthayanto mahīkṣitaḥ ,
kāṅkṣanti sma viśeṣeṇa balavṛtraniṣūdana.
21. tām ratnabhūtām lokasya prārthayantaḥ mahīkṣitaḥ
kāṅkṣanti sma viśeṣeṇa balavṛtraniṣūdana
21. O destroyer of Bala and Vṛtra, kings, desiring her—who is like a jewel to the world—particularly longed for her.
एतस्मिन्कथ्यमाने तु लोकपालाश्च साग्निकाः ।
आजग्मुर्देवराजस्य समीपममरोत्तमाः ॥२२॥
22. etasminkathyamāne tu lokapālāśca sāgnikāḥ ,
ājagmurdevarājasya samīpamamarottamāḥ.
22. etasmin kathyamāne tu lokapālāḥ ca sāgnikāḥ
ājagmuḥ devarājasya samīpam amarottamāḥ
22. Indeed, while this was being narrated, the world-protectors (lokapālas)—accompanied by Agni—along with the best among immortals (amarottamās), came near the king of the gods.
ततस्तच्छुश्रुवुः सर्वे नारदस्य वचो महत् ।
श्रुत्वा चैवाब्रुवन्हृष्टा गच्छामो वयमप्युत ॥२३॥
23. tatastacchuśruvuḥ sarve nāradasya vaco mahat ,
śrutvā caivābruvanhṛṣṭā gacchāmo vayamapyuta.
23. tataḥ tat śuśruvuḥ sarve nāradasya vacaḥ mahat
śrutvā ca eva abruvan hṛṣṭāḥ gacchāmaḥ vayam api uta
23. Then, all of them heard that great speech of Nārada. And having heard it, they joyfully said, 'We too shall go!'
ततः सर्वे महाराज सगणाः सहवाहनाः ।
विदर्भानभितो जग्मुर्यत्र सर्वे महीक्षितः ॥२४॥
24. tataḥ sarve mahārāja sagaṇāḥ sahavāhanāḥ ,
vidarbhānabhito jagmuryatra sarve mahīkṣitaḥ.
24. tataḥ sarve mahārāja sagaṇāḥ sahavāhanāḥ
vidarbhān abhitaḥ jagmuḥ yatra sarve mahīkṣitaḥ
24. Then, O great king, all of them, along with their retinues and mounts, went towards Vidarbha, where all the kings were gathered.
नलोऽपि राजा कौन्तेय श्रुत्वा राज्ञां समागमम् ।
अभ्यगच्छददीनात्मा दमयन्तीमनुव्रतः ॥२५॥
25. nalo'pi rājā kaunteya śrutvā rājñāṁ samāgamam ,
abhyagacchadadīnātmā damayantīmanuvrataḥ.
25. nalaḥ api rājā kaunteya śrutvā rājñām samāgamam
abhyagacchat adīnātmā damayantīm anuvrataḥ
25. O son of Kunti, King Nala, having heard of the assembly of kings, and being resolute in spirit (ātman) and devoted to Damayanti, went to her.
अथ देवाः पथि नलं ददृशुर्भूतले स्थितम् ।
साक्षादिव स्थितं मूर्त्या मन्मथं रूपसंपदा ॥२६॥
26. atha devāḥ pathi nalaṁ dadṛśurbhūtale sthitam ,
sākṣādiva sthitaṁ mūrtyā manmathaṁ rūpasaṁpadā.
26. atha devāḥ pathi nalam dadṛśuḥ bhūtale sthitam
sākṣāt iva sthitam mūrtyā manmatham rūpasaṃpadā
26. Then, the gods saw Nala on the path, standing on the ground, appearing as if Kamadeva (Manmatha) himself were visibly present in person (mūrti) with such an abundance of beauty.
तं दृष्ट्वा लोकपालास्ते भ्राजमानं यथा रविम् ।
तस्थुर्विगतसंकल्पा विस्मिता रूपसंपदा ॥२७॥
27. taṁ dṛṣṭvā lokapālāste bhrājamānaṁ yathā ravim ,
tasthurvigatasaṁkalpā vismitā rūpasaṁpadā.
27. tam dṛṣṭvā lokapālāḥ te bhrājamānam yathā ravim
tasthuḥ vigatasaṃkalpāḥ vismitāḥ rūpasaṃpadā
27. Having seen him shining like the sun, those guardians of the world (lokapāla) stood there, their intentions or firm resolves (saṃkalpa) dispelled, utterly astonished by his abundance of beauty.
ततोऽन्तरिक्षे विष्टभ्य विमानानि दिवौकसः ।
अब्रुवन्नैषधं राजन्नवतीर्य नभस्तलात् ॥२८॥
28. tato'ntarikṣe viṣṭabhya vimānāni divaukasaḥ ,
abruvannaiṣadhaṁ rājannavatīrya nabhastalāt.
28. tataḥ antarikṣe viṣṭabhya vimānāni divaukasaḥ
abruvan naiṣadham rājan avatīrya nabhastalāt
28. Then the dwellers of heaven, having stationed their celestial chariots in the sky, spoke to Naishadha, saying, "O King, you who have descended from the celestial region."
भो भो नैषध राजेन्द्र नल सत्यव्रतो भवान् ।
अस्माकं कुरु साहाय्यं दूतो भव नरोत्तम ॥२९॥
29. bho bho naiṣadha rājendra nala satyavrato bhavān ,
asmākaṁ kuru sāhāyyaṁ dūto bhava narottama.
29. bho bho naiṣadha rājendra nala satyavrataḥ bhavān
asmākam kuru sāhāyyam dūtaḥ bhava narottama
29. "Oh, oh, O Naishadha, O King of kings, O Nala! You are true to your vows. Render us assistance, become our messenger, O best among men!"
