संध्यागतं सहस्रांशुमादित्यमुपतस्थिरे ॥१॥

1. Sañjaya said: "O great king, they, armored and positioned at the forefront of the battle, indeed stood before the sun, the thousand-rayed (āditya), as it was reaching its twilight setting."
उदिते तु सहस्रांशौ तप्तकाञ्चनसप्रभे ।
प्रकाशितेषु लोकेषु पुनर्युद्धमवर्तत ॥२॥
2. udite tu sahasrāṁśau taptakāñcanasaprabhe ,
prakāśiteṣu lokeṣu punaryuddhamavartata.

2. But when the thousand-rayed sun had risen, with a splendor like heated gold, and the worlds were illuminated, the battle resumed.
द्वंद्वानि यानि तत्रासन्संसक्तानि पुरोदयात् ।
तान्येवाभ्युदिते सूर्ये समसज्जन्त भारत ॥३॥
3. dvaṁdvāni yāni tatrāsansaṁsaktāni purodayāt ,
tānyevābhyudite sūrye samasajjanta bhārata.

3. O descendant of Bharata, the pairs of combatants who were engaged there before sunrise became fully re-engaged when the sun (sūrya) rose.
रथैर्हया हयैर्नागाः पादाताश्चापि कुञ्जरैः ।
हया हयैः समाजग्मुः पादाताश्च पदातिभिः ।
संसक्ताश्च वियुक्ताश्च योधाः संन्यपतन्रणे ॥४॥
4. rathairhayā hayairnāgāḥ pādātāścāpi kuñjaraiḥ ,
hayā hayaiḥ samājagmuḥ pādātāśca padātibhiḥ ,
saṁsaktāśca viyuktāśca yodhāḥ saṁnyapatanraṇe.

api kuñjaraiḥ hayāḥ hayaiḥ samājagmuḥ

saṃsaktāḥ ca viyuktāḥ ca yodhāḥ raṇe sannyapatan.
4. Horses clashed with chariots, elephants with horses, and foot soldiers also with elephants. Horses met horses, and foot soldiers engaged with other foot soldiers. Warriors, both entangled in combat and separated, fell in the battle.
ते रात्रौ कृतकर्माणः श्रान्ताः सूर्यस्य तेजसा ।
क्षुत्पिपासापरीताङ्गा विसंज्ञा बहवोऽभवन् ॥५॥
5. te rātrau kṛtakarmāṇaḥ śrāntāḥ sūryasya tejasā ,
kṣutpipāsāparītāṅgā visaṁjñā bahavo'bhavan.

5. Many of them, who had performed their actions (karma) during the night, became exhausted by the sun's (sūrya) intense heat (tejas). Their bodies overcome by hunger and thirst, they became senseless.
शङ्खभेरीमृदङ्गानां कुञ्जराणां च गर्जताम् ।
विस्फारितविकृष्टानां कार्मुकाणां च कूजताम् ॥६॥
6. śaṅkhabherīmṛdaṅgānāṁ kuñjarāṇāṁ ca garjatām ,
visphāritavikṛṣṭānāṁ kārmukāṇāṁ ca kūjatām.

6. There were (sounds) of conch shells, drums, and mṛdaṅgas; and of trumpeting elephants; and of twanging, stretched and drawn bows.
शब्दः समभवद्राजन्दिविस्पृग्भरतर्षभ ।
द्रवतां च पदातीनां शस्त्राणां विनिपात्यताम् ॥७॥
7. śabdaḥ samabhavadrājandivispṛgbharatarṣabha ,
dravatāṁ ca padātīnāṁ śastrāṇāṁ vinipātyatām.

7. O King, O best of Bharatas, a sky-piercing sound arose from the running foot-soldiers and the striking down of weapons.
हयानां हेषतां चैव रथानां च निवर्तताम् ।
क्रोशतां गर्जतां चैव तदासीत्तुमुलं महत् ॥८॥
8. hayānāṁ heṣatāṁ caiva rathānāṁ ca nivartatām ,
krośatāṁ garjatāṁ caiva tadāsīttumulaṁ mahat.
8. hayānām heṣatām ca eva rathānām ca nivartatām
krośatām garjatām ca eva tadā āsīt tumulam mahat
8. ca eva tadā tumulam mahat āsīt hayānām heṣatām

8. And indeed, at that time, there was a great and tumultuous sound from the neighing of the horses, the turning back of the chariots, and the shrieking and roaring.
विवृद्धस्तुमुलः शब्दो द्यामगच्छन्महास्वनः ।
नानायुधनिकृत्तानां चेष्टतामातुरः स्वनः ॥९॥
9. vivṛddhastumulaḥ śabdo dyāmagacchanmahāsvanaḥ ,
nānāyudhanikṛttānāṁ ceṣṭatāmāturaḥ svanaḥ.
9. vivṛddhaḥ tumulaḥ śabdaḥ dyām agacchat mahāsvanaḥ
nānāyudhanikṛttānām ceṣṭatām āturaḥ svanaḥ

9. The tumultuous sound, greatly increased and a mighty roar, reached the sky. There was also a distressed groan from those who were cut down by various weapons and struggling.
भूमावश्रूयत महांस्तदासीत्कृपणं महत् ।
पततां पतितानां च पत्त्यश्वरथहस्तिनाम् ॥१०॥
10. bhūmāvaśrūyata mahāṁstadāsītkṛpaṇaṁ mahat ,
patatāṁ patitānāṁ ca pattyaśvarathahastinām.

patatām patitānām ca pattyaśvarathahastinām

10. On the ground, a great and lamentable sound was heard; then there was a great and pitiful sound from the foot-soldiers, horses, chariots, and elephants who were falling and had fallen.
तेषु सर्वेष्वनीकेषु व्यतिषक्तेष्वनेकशः ।
स्वे स्वाञ्जघ्नुः परे स्वांश्च स्वे परांश्च परान्परे ॥११॥
11. teṣu sarveṣvanīkeṣu vyatiṣakteṣvanekaśaḥ ,
sve svāñjaghnuḥ pare svāṁśca sve parāṁśca parānpare.
11. teṣu sarveṣu anīkeṣu vyatiṣakteṣu anekaśaḥ sve
svān jaghnuḥ pare svān ca sve parān ca parān pare
11. teṣu sarveṣu anīkeṣu vyatiṣakteṣu anekaśaḥ sve
svān jaghnuḥ pare svān ca sve parān ca parān pare
11. In those numerous, thoroughly intermingled armies, their own people killed their own kinsmen; the opposing forces also killed their own; their own people killed the opposing forces; and the opposing forces killed other opposing forces.
वीरबाहुविसृष्टाश्च योधेषु च गजेषु च ।
असयः प्रत्यदृश्यन्त वाससां नेजनेष्विव ॥१२॥
12. vīrabāhuvisṛṣṭāśca yodheṣu ca gajeṣu ca ,
asayaḥ pratyadṛśyanta vāsasāṁ nejaneṣviva.
12. vīrabāhuvisṛṣṭāḥ ca yodheṣu ca gajeṣu ca
asayaḥ pratyadṛśyanta vāsasām nejaneṣu iva

12. Swords, wielded by heroic arms, were seen among warriors and elephants, moving rapidly and appearing like clothes being vigorously washed.
उद्यतप्रतिपिष्टानां खड्गानां वीरबाहुभिः ।
स एव शब्दस्तद्रूपो वाससां निज्यतामिव ॥१३॥
13. udyatapratipiṣṭānāṁ khaḍgānāṁ vīrabāhubhiḥ ,
sa eva śabdastadrūpo vāsasāṁ nijyatāmiva.
13. udyatapratipiṣṭānām khaḍgānām vīrabāhubhiḥ
saḥ eva śabdaḥ tadrūpaḥ vāsasām nijyatām iva
13. vīrabāhubhiḥ udyatapratipiṣṭānām khaḍgānām

13. The very sound produced by swords, raised and clashed by heroic arms, was identical to the sound of clothes being washed.
अर्धासिभिस्तथा खड्गैस्तोमरैः सपरश्वधैः ।
निकृष्टयुद्धं संसक्तं महदासीत्सुदारुणम् ॥१४॥
14. ardhāsibhistathā khaḍgaistomaraiḥ saparaśvadhaiḥ ,
nikṛṣṭayuddhaṁ saṁsaktaṁ mahadāsītsudāruṇam.
14. ardhāsibhiḥ tathā khaḍgaiḥ tomaraiḥ saparaśvadhaiḥ
nikṛṣṭayuddham saṃsaktam mahat āsīt sudāruṇam
14. ardhāsibhiḥ tathā khaḍgaiḥ tomaraiḥ saparaśvadhaiḥ
nikṛṣṭayuddham saṃsaktam mahat sudāruṇam āsīt
14. A great, exceedingly fierce, and desperate battle, involving continuous combat, ensued with broken swords, (whole) swords, lances, and axes.
गजाश्वकायप्रभवां नरदेहप्रवाहिनीम् ।
शस्त्रमत्स्यसुसंपूर्णां मांसशोणितकर्दमाम् ॥१५॥
15. gajāśvakāyaprabhavāṁ naradehapravāhinīm ,
śastramatsyasusaṁpūrṇāṁ māṁsaśoṇitakardamām.

śastramatsyasuṣampūrṇām māṃsaśoṇitakardamām

15. They created a river originating from the bodies of elephants and horses, flowing with human bodies, teeming with weapons like fish, and having mud composed of flesh and blood.
आर्तनादस्वनवतीं पताकावस्त्रफेनिलाम् ।
नदीं प्रावर्तयन्वीराः परलोकप्रवाहिनीम् ॥१६॥
16. ārtanādasvanavatīṁ patākāvastraphenilām ,
nadīṁ prāvartayanvīrāḥ paralokapravāhinīm.

16. The heroes caused this river to flow, a river marked by the sound of cries of distress, foamy with banners and garments, and flowing towards the other world.
शरशक्त्यर्दिताः क्लान्ता रात्रिमूढाल्पचेतसः ।
विष्टभ्य सर्वगात्राणि व्यतिष्ठन्गजवाजिनः ।
संशुष्कवदना वीराः शिरोभिश्चारुकुण्डलैः ॥१७॥
17. śaraśaktyarditāḥ klāntā rātrimūḍhālpacetasaḥ ,
viṣṭabhya sarvagātrāṇi vyatiṣṭhangajavājinaḥ ,
saṁśuṣkavadanā vīrāḥ śirobhiścārukuṇḍalaiḥ.

ca sarvagātrāṇi viṣṭabhya vyatiṣṭhan
17. Wounded by arrows and spears, exhausted, and bewildered by the night with little consciousness, the heroes, with parched faces and heads adorned with beautiful earrings, stood firm, holding all their limbs, as did the elephants and horses.
युद्धोपकरणैश्चान्यैस्तत्र तत्र प्रकाशितैः ।
क्रव्यादसंघैराकीर्णं मृतैरर्धमृतैरपि ।
नासीद्रथपथस्तत्र सर्वमायोधनं प्रति ॥१८॥
18. yuddhopakaraṇaiścānyaistatra tatra prakāśitaiḥ ,
kravyādasaṁghairākīrṇaṁ mṛtairardhamṛtairapi ,
nāsīdrathapathastatra sarvamāyodhanaṁ prati.
18. yuddhopakaraṇaiḥ ca anyaiḥ tatra tatra
prakāśitaiḥ kravyādasaṃghaiḥ ākīrṇam
mṛtaiḥ ardhamṛtaiḥ api na āsīt
rathapathaḥ tatra sarvam āyodhanam prati
18. sarvam āyodhanam tatra tatra prakāśitaiḥ anyaiḥ ca yuddhopakaraṇaiḥ,
kravyādasaṃghaiḥ mṛtaiḥ ardhamṛtaiḥ api ākīrṇam (āsīt).
tatra rathapathaḥ na āsīt.
18. The entire battlefield was strewn here and there with implements of war and other things, and covered with hosts of flesh-eaters, as well as the dead and the half-dead. There was no path for chariots anywhere in that entire battleground.
मज्जत्सु चक्रेषु रथान्सत्त्वमास्थाय वाजिनः ।
कथंचिदवहञ्श्रान्ता वेपमानाः शरार्दिताः ।
कुलसत्त्वबलोपेता वाजिनो वारणोपमाः ॥१९॥
19. majjatsu cakreṣu rathānsattvamāsthāya vājinaḥ ,
kathaṁcidavahañśrāntā vepamānāḥ śarārditāḥ ,
kulasattvabalopetā vājino vāraṇopamāḥ.

āsthāya vājinaḥ kathaṃcit avahan śrāntāḥ
vepamānāḥ śara-arditāḥ

19. The horses, exhausted, trembling, and afflicted by arrows, somehow managed to pull the chariots even as their wheels sank. Relying on their intrinsic nature (sattva), these horses, endowed with noble lineage, courage, and strength, were like mighty elephants.
विह्वलं तत्समुद्भ्रान्तं सभयं भारतातुरम् ।
बलमासीत्तदा सर्वमृते द्रोणार्जुनावुभौ ॥२०॥
20. vihvalaṁ tatsamudbhrāntaṁ sabhayaṁ bhāratāturam ,
balamāsīttadā sarvamṛte droṇārjunāvubhau.
20. vihvalam tat samuddhbrāntam sabhayam bhārata āturam
balam āsīt tadā sarvam ṛte droṇa-arjunau ubhau
20. bhārata! tadā droṇa-arjunau ubhau ṛte sarvam tat
balam vihvalam samuddhbrāntam sabhayam āturam āsīt
20. O Bhārata, at that time, the entire army was bewildered, greatly agitated, fearful, and distressed, with the sole exception of both Droṇa and Arjuna.
तावेवास्तां निलयनं तावार्तायनमेव च ।
तावेवान्ये समासाद्य जग्मुर्वैवस्वतक्षयम् ॥२१॥
21. tāvevāstāṁ nilayanaṁ tāvārtāyanameva ca ,
tāvevānye samāsādya jagmurvaivasvatakṣayam.
21. tau eva āstām nilayanam tau eva ārtāyanam eva ca
tau eva anye samāsādya jagmuḥ vaivasvata-kṣayam
21. tau eva nilayanam āstām ca tau eva ārtāyanam eva
(āstām) anye tau eva samāsādya vaivasvata-kṣayam jagmuḥ
21. They both indeed served as a refuge and a means of deliverance. As for others, having approached these two, they went to the abode of Yama (vaivasvata-kṣayam), meaning they met their death.
आविग्नमभवत्सर्वं कौरवाणां महद्बलम् ।
पाञ्चालानां च संसक्तं न प्राज्ञायत किंचन ॥२२॥
22. āvignamabhavatsarvaṁ kauravāṇāṁ mahadbalam ,
pāñcālānāṁ ca saṁsaktaṁ na prājñāyata kiṁcana.
22. āvignam abhavat sarvam kauravāṇām mahat balam
pāñcālānām ca saṃsaktam na prājñāyata kim cana
22. kauravāṇām mahat sarvam balam āvignam abhavat ca
pāñcālānām saṃsaktam (balam) kim cana na prājñāyata
22. The entire great army of the Kauravas became agitated. And being engaged with the Pañcālas' forces, nothing at all could be discerned.
अन्तकाक्रीडसदृशे भीरूणां भयवर्धने ।
पृथिव्यां राजवंशानामुत्थिते महति क्षये ॥२३॥
23. antakākrīḍasadṛśe bhīrūṇāṁ bhayavardhane ,
pṛthivyāṁ rājavaṁśānāmutthite mahati kṣaye.
23. antakākīḍasadṛśe bhīrūṇām bhayavardhane
pṛthivyām rājavaṃśānām utthite mahati kṣaye

23. During that great destruction on earth, which had arisen among the royal dynasties, resembled the sport of Death, and amplified the fear of the timid.
न तत्र कर्णं न द्रोणं नार्जुनं न युधिष्ठिरम् ।
न भीमसेनं न यमौ न पाञ्चाल्यं न सात्यकिम् ॥२४॥
24. na tatra karṇaṁ na droṇaṁ nārjunaṁ na yudhiṣṭhiram ,
na bhīmasenaṁ na yamau na pāñcālyaṁ na sātyakim.

na bhīmasenam na yamau na pāñcālyam na sātyakim

24. There, neither Karṇa, nor Droṇa, nor Arjuna, nor Yudhiṣṭhira, nor Bhīmasena, nor the twins (Nakula and Sahadeva), nor Pāñcālya (Dhṛṣṭadyumna), nor Sātyaki (were seen).
न च दुःशासनं द्रौणिं न दुर्योधनसौबलौ ।
न कृपं मद्रराजं वा कृतवर्माणमेव च ॥२५॥
25. na ca duḥśāsanaṁ drauṇiṁ na duryodhanasaubalau ,
na kṛpaṁ madrarājaṁ vā kṛtavarmāṇameva ca.
25. na ca duḥśāsanam drauṇim na duryodhanasaubalau
na kṛpam madrarājam vā kṛtavarmāṇam eva ca
25. duḥśāsanam ca na,
drauṇim na,
duryodhanasaubalau na,
kṛpam na,
madrarājam vā na,
kṛtavarmāṇam eva ca na
25. Nor Duḥśāsana, nor Drauṇi (Aśvatthāmā), nor Duryodhana and Saubala (Śakuni), nor Kṛpa, nor the king of Madra (Śalya), nor indeed Kṛtavarmā.
न चान्यान्नैव चात्मानं न क्षितिं न दिशस्तथा ।
पश्याम राजन्संसक्तान्सैन्येन रजसावृतान् ॥२६॥
26. na cānyānnaiva cātmānaṁ na kṣitiṁ na diśastathā ,
paśyāma rājansaṁsaktānsainyena rajasāvṛtān.
26. na ca anyān na eva ca ātmānam na kṣitim na diśaḥ
tathā paśyāma rājan saṃsaktān sainyena rajasā āvṛtān
26. rājan,
sainyena rajasā saṃsaktān āvṛtān anyān ca na,

26. O King, we could not see others, nor even ourselves (ātman), nor the earth, nor the directions, because they were enveloped and obscured by the dust of the army.
संभ्रान्ते तुमुले घोरे रजोमेघे समुत्थिते ।
द्वितीयामिव संप्राप्ताममन्यन्त निशां तदा ॥२७॥
27. saṁbhrānte tumule ghore rajomeghe samutthite ,
dvitīyāmiva saṁprāptāmamanyanta niśāṁ tadā.

27. At that time, when a terrifying, tumultuous cloud of dust had risen, they considered it as if a second night had arrived.
न ज्ञायन्ते कौरवेया न पाञ्चाला न पाण्डवाः ।
न दिशो न दिवं नोर्वीं न समं विषमं तथा ॥२८॥
28. na jñāyante kauraveyā na pāñcālā na pāṇḍavāḥ ,
na diśo na divaṁ norvīṁ na samaṁ viṣamaṁ tathā.
28. na jñāyante kauraveyāḥ na pāñcālāḥ na pāṇḍavāḥ na
diśaḥ na divam na urvīm na samam viṣamam tathā
28. na kauraveyāḥ na pāñcālāḥ na pāṇḍavāḥ jñāyante na
diśaḥ na divam na urvīm na samam na viṣamam tathā
28. Neither the Kauravas, nor the Pancalas, nor the Pandavas could be distinguished. Similarly, neither the directions, nor the sky, nor the earth, nor even or uneven ground could be perceived.
हस्तसंस्पर्शमापन्नान्परान्वाप्यथ वा स्वकान् ।
न्यपातयंस्तदा युद्धे नराः स्म विजयैषिणः ॥२९॥
29. hastasaṁsparśamāpannānparānvāpyatha vā svakān ,
nyapātayaṁstadā yuddhe narāḥ sma vijayaiṣiṇaḥ.

29. Then, in that battle, warriors intent on victory struck down opponents, or even their own kin, once they came within hand's reach.
उद्धूतत्वात्तु रजसः प्रसेकाच्छोणितस्य च ।
प्रशशाम रजो भौमं शीघ्रत्वादनिलस्य च ॥३०॥
30. uddhūtatvāttu rajasaḥ prasekācchoṇitasya ca ,
praśaśāma rajo bhaumaṁ śīghratvādanilasya ca.

30. However, the earthly dust subsided both because it had been stirred up and because of the showering of blood, and also due to the swiftness of the wind.
तत्र नागा हया योधा रथिनोऽथ पदातयः ।
पारिजातवनानीव व्यरोचन्रुधिरोक्षिताः ॥३१॥
31. tatra nāgā hayā yodhā rathino'tha padātayaḥ ,
pārijātavanānīva vyarocanrudhirokṣitāḥ.

31. There, elephants, horses, warriors, charioteers, and foot soldiers, drenched in blood, gleamed like Parijata forests.
ततो दुर्योधनः कर्णो द्रोणो दुःशासनस्तथा ।
पाण्डवैः समसज्जन्त चतुर्भिश्चतुरो रथाः ॥३२॥
32. tato duryodhanaḥ karṇo droṇo duḥśāsanastathā ,
pāṇḍavaiḥ samasajjanta caturbhiścaturo rathāḥ.

32. Then Duryodhana, Karna, Drona, and Duḥśāsana engaged in battle with the Pāṇḍavas, four charioteers against four.
दुर्योधनः सह भ्रात्रा यमाभ्यां समसज्जत ।
वृकोदरेण राधेयो भारद्वाजेन चार्जुनः ॥३३॥
33. duryodhanaḥ saha bhrātrā yamābhyāṁ samasajjata ,

33. Duryodhana, along with his brother (Duḥśāsana), engaged with the two Yamas (Nakula and Sahadeva); Karna (Rādheya) fought with Vṛkodara (Bhīma); and Arjuna with Droṇa (Bhāradvāja).
तद्घोरं महदाश्चर्यं सर्वे प्रैक्षन्समन्ततः ।
रथर्षभाणामुग्राणां संनिपातममानुषम् ॥३४॥
34. tadghoraṁ mahadāścaryaṁ sarve praikṣansamantataḥ ,
ratharṣabhāṇāmugrāṇāṁ saṁnipātamamānuṣam.

34. From all sides, everyone watched that dreadful, great wonder: the superhuman clash of fierce, chief charioteers.
रथमार्गैर्विचित्रैश्च विचित्ररथसंकुलम् ।
अपश्यन्रथिनो युद्धं विचित्रं चित्रयोधिनाम् ॥३५॥
35. rathamārgairvicitraiśca vicitrarathasaṁkulam ,
apaśyanrathino yuddhaṁ vicitraṁ citrayodhinām.

35. They observed the extraordinary battle of skilled warriors, characterized by diverse chariot maneuvers and crowded with many different chariots.
यतमानाः पराक्रान्ताः परस्परजिगीषवः ।
जीमूता इव घर्मान्ते शरवर्षैरवाकिरन् ॥३६॥
36. yatamānāḥ parākrāntāḥ parasparajigīṣavaḥ ,
jīmūtā iva gharmānte śaravarṣairavākiran.

36. Striving and valorous, eager to conquer each other, they showered arrows just like clouds pour down rain at the end of the hot season.
ते रथान्सूर्यसंकाशानास्थिताः पुरुषर्षभाः ।
अशोभन्त यथा मेघाः शारदाः समुपस्थिताः ॥३७॥
37. te rathānsūryasaṁkāśānāsthitāḥ puruṣarṣabhāḥ ,
aśobhanta yathā meghāḥ śāradāḥ samupasthitāḥ.

37. Those foremost among men (puruṣa), mounted on chariots as brilliant as the sun, appeared splendid, just like autumnal clouds that have gathered.
स्पर्धिनस्ते महेष्वासाः कृतयत्ना धनुर्धराः ।
अभ्यगच्छंस्तथान्योन्यं मत्ता गजवृषा इव ॥३८॥
38. spardhinaste maheṣvāsāḥ kṛtayatnā dhanurdharāḥ ,
abhyagacchaṁstathānyonyaṁ mattā gajavṛṣā iva.

38. Those rival archers, skilled with mighty bows and well-prepared, advanced towards each other like enraged bull elephants.
न नूनं देहभेदोऽस्ति काले तस्मिन्समागते ।
यत्र सर्वे न युगपद्व्यशीर्यन्त महारथाः ॥३९॥
39. na nūnaṁ dehabhedo'sti kāle tasminsamāgate ,
yatra sarve na yugapadvyaśīryanta mahārathāḥ.

39. Indeed, when that critical time arrived, there was certainly no distinction between bodies, [so fierce was the battle] that not all the great warriors (mahārathaḥ) perished simultaneously.
बाहुभिश्चरणैश्छिन्नैः शिरोभिश्चारुकुण्डलैः ।
कार्मुकैर्विशिखैः प्रासैः खड्गैः परशुपट्टिशैः ॥४०॥
40. bāhubhiścaraṇaiśchinnaiḥ śirobhiścārukuṇḍalaiḥ ,
kārmukairviśikhaiḥ prāsaiḥ khaḍgaiḥ paraśupaṭṭiśaiḥ.

40. With severed arms and feet, with heads adorned with beautiful earrings; with bows, arrows, spears, swords, axes, and pattiśas (a type of weapon).
नालीकक्षुरनाराचैर्नखरैः शक्तितोमरैः ।
अन्यैश्च विविधाकारैर्धौतैः प्रहरणोत्तमैः ॥४१॥
41. nālīkakṣuranārācairnakharaiḥ śaktitomaraiḥ ,
anyaiśca vividhākārairdhautaiḥ praharaṇottamaiḥ.

41. With nālīka-arrows, kṣura-arrows, and nārāca-arrows; with claw-shaped weapons (nakhara) and with spears (śakti) and javelins (tomara); and with other excellent, polished weapons of various shapes.
चित्रैश्च विविधाकारैः शरीरावरणैरपि ।
विचित्रैश्च रथैर्भग्नैर्हतैश्च गजवाजिभिः ॥४२॥
42. citraiśca vividhākāraiḥ śarīrāvaraṇairapi ,
vicitraiśca rathairbhagnairhataiśca gajavājibhiḥ.

42. And with variegated body armor of various shapes; and also with wonderfully varied, broken chariots; and with killed elephants and horses.
शून्यैश्च नगराकारैर्हतयोधध्वजै रथैः ।
अमनुष्यैर्हयैस्त्रस्तैः कृष्यमाणैस्ततस्ततः ॥४३॥
43. śūnyaiśca nagarākārairhatayodhadhvajai rathaiḥ ,
amanuṣyairhayaistrastaiḥ kṛṣyamāṇaistatastataḥ.
43. śūnyaiḥ ca nagarākāraiḥ hata-yodha-dhvajaiḥ rathaiḥ

43. The battlefield was filled with empty, city-like chariots, their warriors slain and banners fallen; and with unmanned, terrified horses being dragged here and there.
वातायमानैरसकृद्धतवीरैरलंकृतैः ।
व्यजनैः कङ्कटैश्चैव ध्वजैश्च विनिपातितैः ॥४४॥
44. vātāyamānairasakṛddhatavīrairalaṁkṛtaiḥ ,
vyajanaiḥ kaṅkaṭaiścaiva dhvajaiśca vinipātitaiḥ.
44. vātāyamānaiḥ asakṛt hata-vīraiḥ alaṃkṛtaiḥ |
vyajanaiḥ kaṅkaṭaiḥ ca eva dhvajaiḥ ca vinipātitaiḥ

44. It was (also filled) with repeatedly waving (fans and banners), and with fallen banners, as well as with armor that had adorned slain heroes.
छत्रैराभरणैर्वस्त्रैर्माल्यैश्च सुसुगन्धिभिः ।
हारैः किरीटैर्मुकुटैरुष्णीषैः किङ्किणीगणैः ॥४५॥
45. chatrairābharaṇairvastrairmālyaiśca susugandhibhiḥ ,
hāraiḥ kirīṭairmukuṭairuṣṇīṣaiḥ kiṅkiṇīgaṇaiḥ.
45. chatraiḥ ābharaṇaiḥ vastraiḥ mālyaiḥ ca susu-gandhibhiḥ

45. Scattered everywhere were parasols, ornaments, garments, and very fragrant garlands; with necklaces, crowns, tiaras, turbans, and clusters of small bells.
उरस्यैर्मणिभिर्निष्कैश्चूडामणिभिरेव च ।
आसीदायोधनं तत्र नभस्तारागणैरिव ॥४६॥
46. urasyairmaṇibhirniṣkaiścūḍāmaṇibhireva ca ,
āsīdāyodhanaṁ tatra nabhastārāgaṇairiva.
46. urasyaiḥ maṇibhiḥ niṣkaiḥ cūḍā-maṇibhiḥ eva ca
| āsīt āyodhanam tatra nabhaḥ tāra-gaṇaiḥ iva

46. And with chest-gems, golden necklaces, and crest-jewels, that battlefield became like the sky filled with constellations of stars.
ततो दुर्योधनस्यासीन्नकुलेन समागमः ।
अमर्षितेन क्रुद्धस्य क्रुद्धेनामर्षितस्य च ॥४७॥
47. tato duryodhanasyāsīnnakulena samāgamaḥ ,
amarṣitena kruddhasya kruddhenāmarṣitasya ca.
47. tataḥ duryodhanasya āsīt nakulena samāgamaḥ
amarṣitena kruddhasya kruddhena amarṣitasya ca

47. Then there was an encounter between Duryodhana and Nakula. It was a confrontation of the enraged Nakula with the furious Duryodhana, and of the furious Duryodhana with the enraged Nakula.
अपसव्यं चकाराथ माद्रीपुत्रस्तवात्मजम् ।
किरञ्शरशतैर्हृष्टस्तत्र नादो महानभूत् ॥४८॥
48. apasavyaṁ cakārātha mādrīputrastavātmajam ,
kirañśaraśatairhṛṣṭastatra nādo mahānabhūt.
48. apasavyam cakāra atha mādrīputraḥ tava ātmajam
kiran śaraśataiḥ hṛṣṭaḥ tatra nādaḥ mahān abhūt

48. Then, the son of Madri, Nakula, delighted, maneuvered to your son Duryodhana's left side, showering him with hundreds of arrows. A great roar then arose there.
अपसव्यं कृतः संख्ये भ्रातृव्येनात्यमर्षिणा ।
सोऽमर्षितस्तमप्याजौ प्रतिचक्रेऽपसव्यतः ॥४९॥
49. apasavyaṁ kṛtaḥ saṁkhye bhrātṛvyenātyamarṣiṇā ,
so'marṣitastamapyājau praticakre'pasavyataḥ.
49. apasavyam kṛtaḥ saṅkhye bhrātṛvyena atyamarṣiṇā
saḥ amarṣitaḥ tam api ājau praticakre apasavyataḥ

49. When subjected to a left-sided maneuver in battle by his exceedingly furious (atyamarṣin) cousin (Nakula), he (Duryodhana), himself enraged (amarṣita), also counter-maneuvered him (Nakula) from the left in that very battle.
ततः प्रतिचिकीर्षन्तमपसव्यं तु ते सुतम् ।
न्यवारयत तेजस्वी नकुलश्चित्रमार्गवित् ॥५०॥
50. tataḥ praticikīrṣantamapasavyaṁ tu te sutam ,
nyavārayata tejasvī nakulaścitramārgavit.
50. tataḥ praticikīrṣantam apasavyam tu te sutam
nyavārayat tejasvī nakulaḥ citramārgavit
50. tataḥ tu tejasvī citramārgavit nakulaḥ te

50. Then, the energetic (tejasvin) Nakula, who was skilled in diverse maneuvers (citramārgavit), prevented your son (Duryodhana) from attempting to return the left-sided maneuver.
सर्वतो विनिवार्यैनं शरजालेन पीडयन् ।
विमुखं नकुलश्चक्रे तत्सैन्याः समपूजयन् ॥५१॥
51. sarvato vinivāryainaṁ śarajālena pīḍayan ,
vimukhaṁ nakulaścakre tatsainyāḥ samapūjayan.

51. Having checked him from all directions and afflicting him with a volley of arrows, Nakula made him turn away. His (Duryodhana's) soldiers then applauded.
तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति नकुलो बभाषे तनयं तव ।
संस्मृत्य सर्वदुःखानि तव दुर्मन्त्रितेन च ॥५२॥
52. tiṣṭha tiṣṭheti nakulo babhāṣe tanayaṁ tava ,
saṁsmṛtya sarvaduḥkhāni tava durmantritena ca.
52. tiṣṭha tiṣṭha iti nakulaḥ babhāṣe tanayam tava
saṃsmṛtya sarvaduḥkhāni tava durmantritena ca
52. nakulaḥ,
tava tanayam,
"tiṣṭha tiṣṭha" iti babhāṣe,
tava durmantritena sarvaduḥkhāni ca saṃsmṛtya
52. "Stop! Stop!" thus Nakula spoke to your son, remembering all the sufferings caused by your evil counsel.
