वासुदेव उवाच ।
उपपन्नमिदं वाक्यं सोमकानां धुरंधरे ।
अर्थसिद्धिकरं राज्ञः पाण्डवस्य महौजसः ॥१॥
1. vāsudeva uvāca ,
upapannamidaṁ vākyaṁ somakānāṁ dhuraṁdhare ,
arthasiddhikaraṁ rājñaḥ pāṇḍavasya mahaujasaḥ.

dhuraṃdhare arthasiddhikaram rājñaḥ pāṇḍavasya mahaujasaḥ
1. Vasudeva said, "This statement is fitting, O foremost among the Somakas. It ensures the fulfillment of purpose for the mighty Pandava king."
एतच्च पूर्वकार्यं नः सुनीतमभिकाङ्क्षताम् ।
अन्यथा ह्याचरन्कर्म पुरुषः स्यात्सुबालिशः ॥२॥
2. etacca pūrvakāryaṁ naḥ sunītamabhikāṅkṣatām ,
anyathā hyācarankarma puruṣaḥ syātsubāliśaḥ.
2. etat ca pūrvakāryam naḥ sunītam abhīkāṅkṣatām
anyathā hi ācaran karma puruṣaḥ syāt subāliśaḥ
2. Moreover, this is our proper course of action for those who desire good policy. Indeed, a person (puruṣa) who acts otherwise would be exceedingly foolish.
किं तु संबन्धकं तुल्यमस्माकं कुरुपाण्डुषु ।
यथेष्टं वर्तमानेषु पाण्डवेषु च तेषु च ॥३॥
3. kiṁ tu saṁbandhakaṁ tulyamasmākaṁ kurupāṇḍuṣu ,
yatheṣṭaṁ vartamāneṣu pāṇḍaveṣu ca teṣu ca.
3. kim tu saṃbandhakam tulyam asmākam kurupāṇḍuṣu
yathā iṣṭam vartamāneṣu pāṇḍaveṣu ca teṣu ca
3. However, our familial connection is equally with both the Kurus and the Pandavas, as both the Pandavas and they (the Kauravas) act according to their wishes.
ते विवाहार्थमानीता वयं सर्वे यथा भवान् ।
कृते विवाहे मुदिता गमिष्यामो गृहान्प्रति ॥४॥
4. te vivāhārthamānītā vayaṁ sarve yathā bhavān ,
kṛte vivāhe muditā gamiṣyāmo gṛhānprati.
4. te vivāhārtham ānītāḥ vayam sarve yathā bhavān
kṛte vivāhe muditāḥ gamiṣyāmaḥ gṛhān prati
4. They were brought here for the marriage, and all of us, like you, will happily return to our respective homes once the wedding is completed.
भवान्वृद्धतमो राज्ञां वयसा च श्रुतेन च ।
शिष्यवत्ते वयं सर्वे भवामेह न संशयः ॥५॥
5. bhavānvṛddhatamo rājñāṁ vayasā ca śrutena ca ,
śiṣyavatte vayaṁ sarve bhavāmeha na saṁśayaḥ.
5. bhavān vṛddhatamaḥ rājñām vayasā ca śrutena ca
śiṣyavat te vayam sarve bhavāma iha na saṃśayaḥ
5. You are the most senior among kings by both age and learning. There is no doubt that we are all like your disciples in this matter.
भवन्तं धृतराष्ट्रश्च सततं बहु मन्यते ।
आचार्ययोः सखा चासि द्रोणस्य च कृपस्य च ॥६॥
6. bhavantaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭraśca satataṁ bahu manyate ,
ācāryayoḥ sakhā cāsi droṇasya ca kṛpasya ca.
6. bhavantam dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ ca satatam bahu manyate
ācāryayoḥ sakhā ca asi droṇasya ca kṛpasya ca
6. Dhritarashtra always holds you in high esteem, and you are a friend to both teachers, Drona and Kripa.
स भवान्प्रेषयत्वद्य पाण्डवार्थकरं वचः ।
सर्वेषां निश्चितं तन्नः प्रेषयिष्यति यद्भवान् ॥७॥
7. sa bhavānpreṣayatvadya pāṇḍavārthakaraṁ vacaḥ ,
sarveṣāṁ niścitaṁ tannaḥ preṣayiṣyati yadbhavān.
7. sa bhavān preṣayatu adya pāṇḍava-artha-karam vacaḥ
sarveṣām niścitam tat naḥ preṣayiṣyati yat bhavān
7. Therefore, you should now send a message that serves the interests of the Pandavas. Whatever you send will certainly be decisive for all of us.
यदि तावच्छमं कुर्यान्न्यायेन कुरुपुंगवः ।
न भवेत्कुरुपाण्डूनां सौभ्रात्रेण महान्क्षयः ॥८॥
8. yadi tāvacchamaṁ kuryānnyāyena kurupuṁgavaḥ ,
na bhavetkurupāṇḍūnāṁ saubhrātreṇa mahānkṣayaḥ.
8. yadi tāvat śamam kuryāt nyāyena kuru-puṅgavaḥ na
bhavet kuru-pāṇḍūnām saubhrātreṇa mahān kṣayaḥ
8. If the chief of the Kurus were to justly establish peace, then there would not be a great destruction for the Kurus and Pandavas; instead, good brotherhood would prevail.
अथ दर्पान्वितो मोहान्न कुर्याद्धृतराष्ट्रजः ।
अन्येषां प्रेषयित्वा च पश्चादस्मान्समाह्वयेः ॥९॥
9. atha darpānvito mohānna kuryāddhṛtarāṣṭrajaḥ ,
anyeṣāṁ preṣayitvā ca paścādasmānsamāhvayeḥ.
9. atha darpa-anvitaḥ mohāt na kuryāt dhṛtarāṣṭrajaḥ
anyeṣām preṣayitvā ca paścāt asmān samāhvayeḥ
9. Then, if Dhritarashtra's son, overcome by pride and delusion (moha), does not act, you should first send [messengers] to others, and afterwards summon us.
ततो दुर्योधनो मन्दः सहामात्यः सबान्धवः ।
निष्ठामापत्स्यते मूढः क्रुद्धे गाण्डीवधन्वनि ॥१०॥
10. tato duryodhano mandaḥ sahāmātyaḥ sabāndhavaḥ ,
niṣṭhāmāpatsyate mūḍhaḥ kruddhe gāṇḍīvadhanvani.
10. tataḥ duryodhanaḥ mandaḥ sahāmātyaḥ sabāndhavaḥ
niṣṭhām āpatsyate mūḍhaḥ kruddhe gāṇḍīvadhanvani
10. Then, the foolish Duryodhana, along with his ministers and relatives, will meet his end when the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow (Arjuna) is enraged.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः सत्कृत्य वार्ष्णेयं विराटः पृथिवीपतिः ।
गृहान्प्रस्थापयामास सगणं सहबान्धवम् ॥११॥
11. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ satkṛtya vārṣṇeyaṁ virāṭaḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ ,
gṛhānprasthāpayāmāsa sagaṇaṁ sahabāndhavam.
11. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tataḥ satkṛtya vārṣṇeyam virāṭaḥ
pṛthivīpatiḥ gṛhān prasthāpayām āsa sagaṇam sabāndhavam
11. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, King Virāṭa, the lord of the earth, having honored Vārṣṇeya (Kṛṣṇa), sent him with his retinue and kinsmen back to his home.
द्वारकां तु गते कृष्णे युधिष्ठिरपुरोगमाः ।
चक्रुः सांग्रामिकं सर्वं विराटश्च महीपतिः ॥१२॥
12. dvārakāṁ tu gate kṛṣṇe yudhiṣṭhirapurogamāḥ ,
cakruḥ sāṁgrāmikaṁ sarvaṁ virāṭaśca mahīpatiḥ.
12. dvārakām tu gate kṛṣṇe yudhiṣṭhirapuroragamāḥ
cakruḥ sāṃgrāmikam sarvam virāṭaḥ ca mahīpatiḥ
12. But when Kṛṣṇa had gone to Dvārakā, those led by Yudhiṣṭhira, and King Virāṭa, made all the preparations for war.
ततः संप्रेषयामास विराटः सह बान्धवैः ।
सर्वेषां भूमिपालानां द्रुपदश्च महीपतिः ॥१३॥
13. tataḥ saṁpreṣayāmāsa virāṭaḥ saha bāndhavaiḥ ,
sarveṣāṁ bhūmipālānāṁ drupadaśca mahīpatiḥ.
13. tataḥ saṃpreṣayāmāsa virāṭaḥ saha bāndhavaiḥ
sarveṣām bhūmipālānām drupadaḥ ca mahīpatiḥ
13. Then Virata, along with his relatives, and King Drupada dispatched messages to all the kings.
वचनात्कुरुसिंहानां मत्स्यपाञ्चालयोश्च ते ।
समाजग्मुर्महीपालाः संप्रहृष्टा महाबलाः ॥१४॥
14. vacanātkurusiṁhānāṁ matsyapāñcālayośca te ,
samājagmurmahīpālāḥ saṁprahṛṣṭā mahābalāḥ.
14. vacanāt kurusiṃhānām matsyapāñcālayoḥ ca te
samājagmuḥ mahīpālāḥ saṃprahṛṣṭāḥ mahābalāḥ
14. At the behest of the Kuru-lions, and the kings of Matsya and Panchala, those mighty and greatly delighted rulers assembled.
तच्छ्रुत्वा पाण्डुपुत्राणां समागच्छन्महद्बलम् ।
धृतराष्ट्रसुतश्चापि समानिन्ये महीपतीन् ॥१५॥
15. tacchrutvā pāṇḍuputrāṇāṁ samāgacchanmahadbalam ,
dhṛtarāṣṭrasutaścāpi samāninye mahīpatīn.
15. tat śrutvā pāṇḍuputrāṇām samāgacchat mahat balam
dhṛtarāṣṭrasutaḥ ca api samāninye mahīpatīn
15. Having heard that a great force of the sons of Pandu (Pandavas) was gathering, the son of Dhritarashtra (Duryodhana) also gathered kings.
समाकुला मही राजन्कुरुपाण्डवकारणात् ।
तदा समभवत्कृत्स्ना संप्रयाणे महीक्षिताम् ॥१६॥
16. samākulā mahī rājankurupāṇḍavakāraṇāt ,
tadā samabhavatkṛtsnā saṁprayāṇe mahīkṣitām.
16. samākulā mahī rājan kurupāṇḍavakāraṇāt tadā
samabhavat kṛtsnā saṃprayāṇe mahīkṣitām
16. O king, then the entire earth became agitated and crowded due to the Kauravas and Pandavas, as the kings marched forth for battle.
बलानि तेषां वीराणामागच्छन्ति ततस्ततः ।
चालयन्तीव गां देवीं सपर्वतवनामिमाम् ॥१७॥
17. balāni teṣāṁ vīrāṇāmāgacchanti tatastataḥ ,
cālayantīva gāṁ devīṁ saparvatavanāmimām.
17. balāni teṣām vīrāṇām āgacchanti tataḥ tataḥ |
cālayantī iva gām devīm sa-parvata-vanām imām
17. The armies of those heroes are coming from every direction, as if shaking this divine earth (gau) along with its mountains and forests.
ततः प्रज्ञावयोवृद्धं पाञ्चाल्यः स्वपुरोहितम् ।
कुरुभ्यः प्रेषयामास युधिष्ठिरमते तदा ॥१८॥
18. tataḥ prajñāvayovṛddhaṁ pāñcālyaḥ svapurohitam ,
kurubhyaḥ preṣayāmāsa yudhiṣṭhiramate tadā.
18. tataḥ prajñā-vayo-vṛddham pāñcālyaḥ sva-purohitam
| kurubhyaḥ preṣayāmāsa yudhiṣṭhira-mate tadā
18. Then, the King of Pañcāla (Pāñcālya) sent his family priest, who was advanced in wisdom and age, to the Kurus, at that time, in accordance with Yudhiṣṭhira's opinion.
