वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एतावदुक्त्वा देवर्षिर्विरराम स नारदः ।
युधिष्ठिरस्तु राजर्षिर्दध्यौ शोकपरिप्लुतः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
etāvaduktvā devarṣirvirarāma sa nāradaḥ ,
yudhiṣṭhirastu rājarṣirdadhyau śokapariplutaḥ.

1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Having spoken these words, the divine sage Nārada fell silent. But the royal sage Yudhishthira, overwhelmed by sorrow, became deeply contemplative.
तं दीनमनसं वीरमधोवदनमातुरम् ।
निःश्वसन्तं यथा नागं पर्यश्रुनयनं तथा ॥२॥
2. taṁ dīnamanasaṁ vīramadhovadanamāturam ,
niḥśvasantaṁ yathā nāgaṁ paryaśrunayanaṁ tathā.
2. taṃ dīnamanasam vīram adhovadanam āturam
niḥśvasantam yathā nāgam paryaśrunayanam tathā
2. taṃ dīnamanasam vīram adhovadanam āturam
niḥśvasantam yathā nāgam paryaśrunayanam tathā
2. Him, the hero, with a dejected mind, face bowed down, agitated, sighing like a serpent, and with tear-filled eyes.
कुन्ती शोकपरीताङ्गी दुःखोपहतचेतना ।
अब्रवीन्मधुराभाषा काले वचनमर्थवत् ॥३॥
3. kuntī śokaparītāṅgī duḥkhopahatacetanā ,
abravīnmadhurābhāṣā kāle vacanamarthavat.

abravīt madhurābhāṣā kāle vacanam arthavat
3. kuntī śokaparītāṅgī duḥkhopahatacetanā

3. Kunti, whose body was enveloped by sorrow and whose mind was afflicted by misery, spoke meaningful words at the appropriate time with her sweet voice.
युधिष्ठिर महाबाहो नैनं शोचितुमर्हसि ।
जहि शोकं महाप्राज्ञ शृणु चेदं वचो मम ॥४॥
4. yudhiṣṭhira mahābāho nainaṁ śocitumarhasi ,
jahi śokaṁ mahāprājña śṛṇu cedaṁ vaco mama.
4. yudhiṣṭhira mahābāho na enam śocitum arhasi
jahi śokam mahāprājña śṛṇu ca idam vacaḥ mama
4. yudhiṣṭhira mahābāho na enam śocitum arhasi
mahāprājña śokam jahi ca mama idam vacaḥ śṛṇu
4. O Yudhishthira, O mighty-armed one, you should not grieve for him. Abandon sorrow, O highly wise one, and listen to these words of mine.
यतितः स मया पूर्वं भ्रात्र्यं ज्ञापयितुं तव ।
भास्करेण च देवेन पित्रा धर्मभृतां वर ॥५॥
5. yatitaḥ sa mayā pūrvaṁ bhrātryaṁ jñāpayituṁ tava ,
bhāskareṇa ca devena pitrā dharmabhṛtāṁ vara.
5. yatitaḥ saḥ mayā pūrvam bhrātṛyam jñāpayitum tava
bhāskareṇa ca devena pitrā dharmabhṛtām vara
5. vara dharmabhṛtām,
pūrvam mayā ca bhāskareṇa devena pitrā saḥ tava bhrātṛyam jñāpayitum yatitaḥ
5. O best among those who uphold natural law (dharma), I previously endeavored, and so did the deity Bhāskara, his father, to make his brotherhood known to you.
यद्वाच्यं हितकामेन सुहृदा भूतिमिच्छता ।
तथा दिवाकरेणोक्तः स्वप्नान्ते मम चाग्रतः ॥६॥
6. yadvācyaṁ hitakāmena suhṛdā bhūtimicchatā ,
tathā divākareṇoktaḥ svapnānte mama cāgrataḥ.
6. yat vācyam hitakāmena suhṛdā bhūtim icchhatā
tathā divākareṇa uktaḥ svapnānte mama ca agrataḥ
6. hitakāmena bhūtim icchhatā suhṛdā yat vācyam,
tathā mama agrataḥ svapnānte divākareṇa uktaḥ ca.
6. What should be spoken by a well-wishing friend who desires prosperity, was similarly uttered by the Sun god before me in a dream.
न चैनमशकद्भानुरहं वा स्नेहकारणैः ।
पुरा प्रत्यनुनेतुं वा नेतुं वाप्येकतां त्वया ॥७॥
7. na cainamaśakadbhānurahaṁ vā snehakāraṇaiḥ ,
purā pratyanunetuṁ vā netuṁ vāpyekatāṁ tvayā.
7. na ca enam aśakat bhānuḥ aham vā snehakāraṇaiḥ
purā pratyanunetum vā netum vā api ekatām tvayā
7. ca bhānuḥ aham vā snehakāraṇaiḥ purā enam pratyanunetum vā,
tvayā ekatām netum vā api na aśakat.
7. Neither the Sun god nor I, due to our affection, were able previously to persuade him, nor to bring him into harmony with you.
ततः कालपरीतः स वैरस्योद्धुक्षणे रतः ।
प्रतीपकारी युष्माकमिति चोपेक्षितो मया ॥८॥
8. tataḥ kālaparītaḥ sa vairasyoddhukṣaṇe rataḥ ,
pratīpakārī yuṣmākamiti copekṣito mayā.
8. tataḥ kālaparītaḥ saḥ vairasya uddhukṣaṇe rataḥ
pratīpakārī yuṣmākam iti ca upekṣitaḥ mayā
8. tataḥ saḥ kālaparītaḥ,
vairasya uddhukṣaṇe rataḥ,
yuṣmākam pratīpakārī,
iti ca mayā upekṣitaḥ.
8. Thus, he, gripped by destiny and intent on fueling animosity, being hostile towards you, was disregarded by me.
इत्युक्तो धर्मराजस्तु मात्रा बाष्पाकुलेक्षणः ।
उवाच वाक्यं धर्मात्मा शोकव्याकुलचेतनः ॥९॥
9. ityukto dharmarājastu mātrā bāṣpākulekṣaṇaḥ ,
uvāca vākyaṁ dharmātmā śokavyākulacetanaḥ.
9. iti uktaḥ dharmarājaḥ tu mātrā bāṣpākulekṣaṇaḥ
uvāca vākyam dharmātmā śokavyākulacetanaḥ
9. iti mātrā uktaḥ tu bāṣpākulekṣaṇaḥ dharmarājaḥ,
dharmātmā śokavyākulacetanaḥ,
vākyam uvāca.
9. Thus spoken to by his mother, King Yudhiṣṭhira (dharmarāja), whose eyes were clouded with tears, who possessed a righteous nature (dharmātmā), and whose mind was agitated by sorrow, spoke (these) words.
भवत्या गूढमन्त्रत्वात्पीडितोऽस्मीत्युवाच ताम् ।
शशाप च महातेजाः सर्वलोकेषु च स्त्रियः ।
न गुह्यं धारयिष्यन्तीत्यतिदुःखसमन्वितः ॥१०॥
10. bhavatyā gūḍhamantratvātpīḍito'smītyuvāca tām ,
śaśāpa ca mahātejāḥ sarvalokeṣu ca striyaḥ ,
na guhyaṁ dhārayiṣyantītyatiduḥkhasamanvitaḥ.
10. bhavatyā gūḍhamantratvāt pīḍitaḥ asmi
iti uvāca tām | śaśāpa ca mahātejāḥ
sarvalokeṣu ca striyaḥ | na guhyam
dhārayiṣyanti iti atiduḥkhasamanvitaḥ
10. mahātejāḥ atiduḥkhasamanvitaḥ bhavatyā
gūḍhamantratvāt pīḍitaḥ asmi
iti tām uvāca ca sarvalokeṣu striyaḥ
guhyam na dhārayiṣyanti iti śaśāpa
10. Because of your secret counsel (mantra), I am afflicted," he said to her. And, filled with great sorrow, the greatly effulgent one cursed women in all worlds, saying, "They will not keep any secret (guhyam)."
स राजा पुत्रपौत्राणां संबन्धिसुहृदां तथा ।
स्मरन्नुद्विग्नहृदयो बभूवास्वस्थचेतनः ॥११॥
11. sa rājā putrapautrāṇāṁ saṁbandhisuhṛdāṁ tathā ,
smarannudvignahṛdayo babhūvāsvasthacetanaḥ.
11. sa rājā putrapautrāṇām sambandhisuhṛdām tathā
| smaran udvignahṛdayaḥ babhūva asvasthacetanaḥ
11. sa rājā putrapautrāṇām tathā sambandhisuhṛdām
smaran udvignahṛdayaḥ asvasthacetanaḥ babhūva
11. That king, remembering his sons, grandsons, relatives, and friends as well, became agitated in heart and disturbed in mind.
ततः शोकपरीतात्मा सधूम इव पावकः ।
निर्वेदमकरोद्धीमान्राजा संतापपीडितः ॥१२॥
12. tataḥ śokaparītātmā sadhūma iva pāvakaḥ ,
nirvedamakaroddhīmānrājā saṁtāpapīḍitaḥ.
12. tataḥ śokaparītātmā sadhūmaḥ iva pāvakaḥ |
nirvedam akarot dhīmān rājā saṃtāpapīḍitaḥ
12. tataḥ śokaparītātmā saṃtāpapīḍitaḥ dhīmān
rājā sadhūmaḥ pāvakaḥ iva nirvedam akarot
12. Then, his soul (ātman) enveloped by sorrow, like a fire obscured by smoke, the wise king, afflicted by distress, developed a profound sense of despair (nirveda).
