वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तेन शब्देन वित्रस्तो जनस्तस्याथ रक्षसः ।
निष्पपात गृहाद्राजन्सहैव परिचारिभिः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tena śabdena vitrasto janastasyātha rakṣasaḥ ,
niṣpapāta gṛhādrājansahaiva paricāribhiḥ.
1. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca tena śabdena vitrastaḥ janaḥ tasya
atha rakṣasaḥ niṣpapāta gṛhāt rājan saha eva paricāribhiḥ
1. Vaiśampāyana said: O King, then the people, terrified by that sound of the demon, along with their attendants, rushed out of their homes.
तान्भीतान्विगतज्ञानान्भीमः प्रहरतां वरः ।
सान्त्वयामास बलवान्समये च न्यवेशयत् ॥२॥
2. tānbhītānvigatajñānānbhīmaḥ praharatāṁ varaḥ ,
sāntvayāmāsa balavānsamaye ca nyaveśayat.
2. tān bhītān vigatajñānān bhīmaḥ praharatām
varaḥ sāntvayāmāsa balavān samaye ca nyaveśayat
2. Bhīma, the mighty one, the best among attackers, consoled those terrified people who had lost their senses, and settled them according to an agreement.
न हिंस्या मानुषा भूयो युष्माभिरिह कर्हिचित् ।
हिंसतां हि वधः शीघ्रमेवमेव भवेदिति ॥३॥
3. na hiṁsyā mānuṣā bhūyo yuṣmābhiriha karhicit ,
hiṁsatāṁ hi vadhaḥ śīghramevameva bhavediti.
3. na hiṃsyā mānuṣā bhūyaḥ yuṣmābhiḥ iha karhicit
hiṃsatām hi vadhaḥ śīghram evam eva bhavet iti
3. Humans must never again be harmed by you here, for those who harm will surely meet with swift destruction in this very manner.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा तानि रक्षांसि भारत ।
एवमस्त्विति तं प्राहुर्जगृहुः समयं च तम् ॥४॥
4. tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā tāni rakṣāṁsi bhārata ,
evamastviti taṁ prāhurjagṛhuḥ samayaṁ ca tam.
4. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā tāni rakṣāṃsi bhārata
evam astu iti tam prāhuḥ jagṛhuḥ samayam ca tam
4. O Bhārata, hearing his words, those demons told him, 'So be it,' and accepted that agreement.
ततः प्रभृति रक्षांसि तत्र सौम्यानि भारत ।
नगरे प्रत्यदृश्यन्त नरैर्नगरवासिभिः ॥५॥
5. tataḥ prabhṛti rakṣāṁsi tatra saumyāni bhārata ,
nagare pratyadṛśyanta narairnagaravāsibhiḥ.
5. tataḥ prabhṛti rakṣāṃsi tatra saumyāni bhārata
nagare pratyadṛśyanta naraiḥ nagaravāsibhiḥ
5. From then onwards, O Bhārata, gentle rākṣasas were seen there in the city by the city-dwelling men.
ततो भीमस्तमादाय गतासुं पुरुषादकम् ।
द्वारदेशे विनिक्षिप्य जगामानुपलक्षितः ॥६॥
6. tato bhīmastamādāya gatāsuṁ puruṣādakam ,
dvāradeśe vinikṣipya jagāmānupalakṣitaḥ.
6. tataḥ bhīmaḥ tam ādāya gatāsum puruṣādakam
dvāradeśe vinikṣipya jagāma anupalakṣitaḥ
6. Then Bhīma, having taken that dead man-eater, placed it at the door and departed unnoticed.
ततः स भीमस्तं हत्वा गत्वा ब्राह्मणवेश्म तत् ।
आचचक्षे यथावृत्तं राज्ञः सर्वमशेषतः ॥७॥
7. tataḥ sa bhīmastaṁ hatvā gatvā brāhmaṇaveśma tat ,
ācacakṣe yathāvṛttaṁ rājñaḥ sarvamaśeṣataḥ.
7. tataḥ saḥ bhīmaḥ tam hatvā gatvā brāhmaṇaveśma
tat ācacarkṣe yathāvṛttam rājñaḥ sarvam aśeṣataḥ
7. Then Bhīma, having killed him and gone to that Brahmin's house, reported everything that had happened to the king completely.
ततो नरा विनिष्क्रान्ता नगरात्काल्यमेव तु ।
ददृशुर्निहतं भूमौ राक्षसं रुधिरोक्षितम् ॥८॥
8. tato narā viniṣkrāntā nagarātkālyameva tu ,
dadṛśurnihataṁ bhūmau rākṣasaṁ rudhirokṣitam.
8. tataḥ narāḥ viniṣkrāntāḥ nagarāt kālyam eva tu
dadṛśuḥ nihatam bhūmau rākṣasam rudhirokṣitam
8. Then men who had come out of the city early in the morning saw on the ground the demon, killed and sprinkled with blood.
तमद्रिकूटसदृशं विनिकीर्णं भयावहम् ।
एकचक्रां ततो गत्वा प्रवृत्तिं प्रददुः परे ॥९॥
9. tamadrikūṭasadṛśaṁ vinikīrṇaṁ bhayāvaham ,
ekacakrāṁ tato gatvā pravṛttiṁ pradaduḥ pare.
9. tam adrikūṭasadṛśam vinikīrṇam bhayāvaham
ekacakrām tataḥ gatvā pravṛttim pradaduḥ pare
9. Then others, having gone to Ekacakrā, reported the news about that terrifying demon, which was like a mountain peak and lay sprawled.
ततः सहस्रशो राजन्नरा नगरवासिनः ।
तत्राजग्मुर्बकं द्रष्टुं सस्त्रीवृद्धकुमारकाः ॥१०॥
10. tataḥ sahasraśo rājannarā nagaravāsinaḥ ,
tatrājagmurbakaṁ draṣṭuṁ sastrīvṛddhakumārakāḥ.
10. tataḥ sahasraśaḥ rājan narāḥ nagaravāsinaḥ tatra
ājagmuḥ bakam draṣṭum sa-strī-vṛddha-kumārakāḥ
10. Then, O King, thousands of city dwellers, including women, the elderly, and children, came there to see Baka.
ततस्ते विस्मिताः सर्वे कर्म दृष्ट्वातिमानुषम् ।
दैवतान्यर्चयां चक्रुः सर्व एव विशां पते ॥११॥
11. tataste vismitāḥ sarve karma dṛṣṭvātimānuṣam ,
daivatānyarcayāṁ cakruḥ sarva eva viśāṁ pate.
11. tataḥ te vismitāḥ sarve karma dṛṣṭvā atimānuṣam
daivatāni arcayām cakruḥ sarve eva viśām pate
11. Then, O lord of the people, all of them, astonished by seeing that superhuman deed (karma), worshipped the deities.
ततः प्रगणयामासुः कस्य वारोऽद्य भोजने ।
ज्ञात्वा चागम्य तं विप्रं पप्रच्छुः सर्व एव तत् ॥१२॥
12. tataḥ pragaṇayāmāsuḥ kasya vāro'dya bhojane ,
jñātvā cāgamya taṁ vipraṁ papracchuḥ sarva eva tat.
12. tataḥ pragaṇayām āsuḥ kasya vāraḥ adya bhojane
jñātvā ca āgamya tam vipram papracchuḥ sarve eva tat
12. Then they calculated whose turn it was for the meal today. And having known, they approached that brahmin and all of them asked him that.
एवं पृष्टस्तु बहुशो रक्षमाणश्च पाण्डवान् ।
उवाच नागरान्सर्वानिदं विप्रर्षभस्तदा ॥१३॥
13. evaṁ pṛṣṭastu bahuśo rakṣamāṇaśca pāṇḍavān ,
uvāca nāgarānsarvānidaṁ viprarṣabhastadā.
13. evam pṛṣṭaḥ tu bahuśaḥ rakṣamāṇaḥ ca pāṇḍavān
uvāca nāgarān sarvān idam viprarṣabhaḥ tadā
13. Being questioned thus repeatedly, and protecting the Pāṇḍavas, that best of brahmins (viprarṣabha) then spoke this to all the city dwellers.
आज्ञापितं मामशने रुदन्तं सह बन्धुभिः ।
ददर्श ब्राह्मणः कश्चिन्मन्त्रसिद्धो महाबलः ॥१४॥
14. ājñāpitaṁ māmaśane rudantaṁ saha bandhubhiḥ ,
dadarśa brāhmaṇaḥ kaścinmantrasiddho mahābalaḥ.
14. ājñāpitam mām aśane rudantam saha bandhubhiḥ
dadarśa brāhmaṇaḥ kaścit mantra-siddhaḥ mahābalaḥ
14. A certain brahmin (brāhmaṇaḥ) of great strength, who had perfected his mantras (mantra-siddha), saw me weeping with my relatives at the time of the meal, when I had been commanded (to go to Baka).
परिपृच्छ्य स मां पूर्वं परिक्लेशं पुरस्य च ।
अब्रवीद्ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठ आश्वास्य प्रहसन्निव ॥१५॥
15. paripṛcchya sa māṁ pūrvaṁ parikleśaṁ purasya ca ,
abravīdbrāhmaṇaśreṣṭha āśvāsya prahasanniva.
15. paripṛcchya saḥ mām pūrvam parikleśam purasya ca
abravīt brāhmaṇaśreṣṭhaḥ āśvāsya prahasan iva
15. Having first thoroughly questioned me about the city's trouble, he (Bhīma), that excellent brahmin, comforted me and spoke as if laughing.
प्रापयिष्याम्यहं तस्मै इदमन्नं दुरात्मने ।
मन्निमित्तं भयं चापि न कार्यमिति वीर्यवान् ॥१६॥
16. prāpayiṣyāmyahaṁ tasmai idamannaṁ durātmane ,
mannimittaṁ bhayaṁ cāpi na kāryamiti vīryavān.
16. prāpayiṣyāmi aham tasmai idam annam durātmane
mannimittam bhayam ca api na kāryam iti vīryavān
16. The mighty one (Bhīma) said, “I myself will deliver this food to that wicked one. And no fear should be felt on my account.”
स तदन्नमुपादाय गतो बकवनं प्रति ।
तेन नूनं भवेदेतत्कर्म लोकहितं कृतम् ॥१७॥
17. sa tadannamupādāya gato bakavanaṁ prati ,
tena nūnaṁ bhavedetatkarma lokahitaṁ kṛtam.
17. saḥ tat annam upādāya gataḥ bakavanam prati
tena nūnam bhavet etat karma lokahitam kṛtam
17. He (Bhīma), having taken that food, went towards Baka's forest. Surely, this action (karma) done by him was for the benefit of the world.
ततस्ते ब्राह्मणाः सर्वे क्षत्रियाश्च सुविस्मिताः ।
वैश्याः शूद्राश्च मुदिताश्चक्रुर्ब्रह्ममहं तदा ॥१८॥
18. tataste brāhmaṇāḥ sarve kṣatriyāśca suvismitāḥ ,
vaiśyāḥ śūdrāśca muditāścakrurbrahmamahaṁ tadā.
18. tataḥ te brāhmaṇāḥ sarve kṣatriyāḥ ca suvismitāḥ
vaiśyāḥ śūdrāḥ ca muditāḥ cakruḥ brahmamaham tadā
18. Then all those brahmins and kshatriyas were greatly astonished, and the vaishyas and shudras, being delighted, then performed a great festival.
ततो जानपदाः सर्वे आजग्मुर्नगरं प्रति ।
तदद्भुततमं द्रष्टुं पार्थास्तत्रैव चावसन् ॥१९॥
19. tato jānapadāḥ sarve ājagmurnagaraṁ prati ,
tadadbhutatamaṁ draṣṭuṁ pārthāstatraiva cāvasan.
19. tataḥ jānapadāḥ sarve ājagmuḥ nagaram prati tat
adbhutatamam draṣṭum pārthāḥ tatra eva ca avasan
19. Then all the country folk came to the city to see that most wonderful event. And the Pārthas (sons of Pṛthā) resided right there.
