1.
Bṛhadaśva said: Having observed all the unusual characteristics of the sagacious Puṇyaśloka, Keśinī quickly returned and reported everything to Damayanti.

2.
Then Damayanti, distressed by sorrow and intensely anxious due to her suspicion (śaṅkā) about Nala, again dispatched Keśinī to her mother's presence.

3.
I have repeatedly tested Bāhuka because of my suspicion concerning Nala. I have only one doubt regarding his outward appearance (rūpa); I wish to ascertain it myself.

4.
O mother, either allow him to enter, or you should grant me permission. Let this be arranged for my father, whether he knows of it or not.

5.
When thus addressed by Vaidarbhī (Damayantī), the queen spoke to Bhīma. And the king (Bhīma) also approved of his daughter's intention.

6.
Indeed, O best of Bharatas, she, having been granted permission by both her father and her mother, led Nala into her private chambers.

7.
But Damayantī, the beautiful lady, seeing Nala in such a condition at that time, became overcome by intense sorrow.

8.
Then, O great king, Damayantī, clad in saffron robes, with matted hair, and covered in dirt and mud, spoke these words to Bāhuka.

9.
O Bāhuka, have you ever seen a man (puruṣa), indeed one who understands natural law (dharma), who abandoned his sleeping wife in the forest and left her?
10. anāgasaṁ priyāṁ bhāryāṁ vijane śramamohitām ,

apahāya tu kaḥ gacchet puṇyaślokam ṛte nalam
apahāya tu kaḥ gacchet puṇyaślokam ṛte nalam
10.
But who, except Nala, that man of pure renown, would abandon an innocent, beloved wife, bewildered by fatigue in a solitary place, and simply leave her?

yaḥ mām utsṛjya vipine gatavān nidrayā hṛtām
yaḥ mām utsṛjya vipine gatavān nidrayā hṛtām
11.
What offense had I, indeed, committed against that king, the one who abandoned me in the forest, when I was overcome by sleep, and then departed?

12.
How could he, whom I chose long ago, directly disregarding the gods, abandon me, who am devoted, full of love, and a mother?

bhariṣyāmi iti satyam ca pratiśrutya kva tad gatam

13.
Where has that solemn promise (satyam) gone – the one he made, 'I will support you,' after taking my hand before the sacred fire, and after I stood by the words of the swans?

14. damayantyā bruvantyāstu sarvametadariṁdama ,

14.

śokajam vāri netrābhyām asukham prāsravat bahu
14.
While Damayantī spoke, O subduer of foes (ariṃdama), much painful water (tears) born of sorrow flowed from her eyes.
15. atīva kṛṣṇatārābhyāṁ raktāntābhyāṁ jalaṁ tu tat ,

parisravannalo dṛṣṭvā śokārta idamabravīt.
15.

parisravan nalaḥ dṛṣṭvā śokārtaḥ idam abravīt
15.
But Nala, seeing that water (tears) flowing from her exceedingly black-pupiled and red-cornered eyes, himself weeping, distressed by grief, spoke these words.
16. mama rājyaṁ pranaṣṭaṁ yannāhaṁ tatkṛtavānsvayam ,

kalinā tatkṛtaṁ bhīru yacca tvāmahamatyajam.
16.
mama rājyam pranaṣṭam yat na aham tat kṛtavān svayam
kalinā tat kṛtam bhīru yat ca tvām aham atyajam
kalinā tat kṛtam bhīru yat ca tvām aham atyajam
16.
My kingdom was ruined, but I myself did not cause its ruin. Oh timid one, that ruin was brought about by (the personification of the age of strife) Kali, as was the act of my abandoning you.
17. tvayā tu dharmabhṛcchreṣṭhe śāpenābhihataḥ purā ,

vanasthayā duḥkhitayā śocantyā māṁ vivāsasam.
17.

vanasthayā duḥkhitayā śocantyā mām vivāsasam
vanasthayā duḥkhitayā śocantyā mām vivāsasam
17.
However, by you, O best upholder of (dharma) natural law, I was struck by a curse in the past – a curse pronounced by you who were dwelling in the forest, distressed and grieving for me, who was then exiled.
18. sa maccharīre tvacchāpāddahyamāno'vasatkaliḥ ,

tvacchāpadagdhaḥ satataṁ so'gnāviva samāhitaḥ.
18.

tvacchāpadagdhaḥ satatam saḥ agnau iva samāhitaḥ
tvacchāpadagdhaḥ satatam saḥ agnau iva samāhitaḥ
18.
That (personification of the age of strife) Kali, burning due to your curse, resided in my body. Constantly scorched by your curse, he was as if placed in a sacrificial fire (for an offering).
19. mama ca vyavasāyena tapasā caiva nirjitaḥ ,

duḥkhasyāntena cānena bhavitavyaṁ hi nau śubhe.
19.
mama ca vyavasāyena tapasā ca eva nirjitaḥ
duḥkhasya antena ca anena bhavitavyam hi nau śubhe
duḥkhasya antena ca anena bhavitavyam hi nau śubhe
19.
And he (Kali) was conquered by my resolve and indeed by my asceticism (tapas). Therefore, by this (victory), an end to suffering must truly come for us both, O auspicious one.

20.
That wicked man abandoned me and left; therefore, I have come here. O wide-hipped one, truly I have no other purpose except for your sake.

21.
How indeed could a woman, O timid one, ever abandon a loving and faithful husband and choose another, just as you are considering?
22. dūtāścaranti pṛthivīṁ kṛtsnāṁ nṛpatiśāsanāt ,

22.

bhaimī kila sma bhartāram dvitīyam varayiṣyati
bhaimī kila sma bhartāram dvitīyam varayiṣyati
22.
Messengers are roaming the entire earth by the king's command, [reporting] that Bhīmī, it is said, will choose a second husband.

23.

23.
And having heard this - that she would act freely, according to her own desire, as if it were truly befitting her own nature (ātman) - Bhāṅgasvari quickly arrived.

24.

24.
Having heard Nala's lament, Damayantī, with folded hands, trembling and frightened, then spoke these words.
