प्रायोपविष्टे तु हते पुत्रे सात्यकिना ततः ।
सोमदत्तो भृशं क्रुद्धः सात्यकिं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
prāyopaviṣṭe tu hate putre sātyakinā tataḥ ,
somadatto bhṛśaṁ kruddhaḥ sātyakiṁ vākyamabravīt.

1. Sanjaya said: But when (his) son, who had undertaken a fast unto death, was killed by Satyaki, then Somadatta, greatly enraged, spoke these words to Satyaki.
क्षत्रधर्मः पुरा दृष्टो यस्तु देवैर्महात्मभिः ।
तं त्वं सात्वत संत्यज्य दस्युधर्मे कथं रतः ॥२॥
2. kṣatradharmaḥ purā dṛṣṭo yastu devairmahātmabhiḥ ,
taṁ tvaṁ sātvata saṁtyajya dasyudharme kathaṁ rataḥ.

2. O Sātvata, how can you, having completely abandoned that warrior's code (kṣatradharma) — which was established in ancient times by the great-souled gods — now engage in the behavior (dharma) of a brigand?
पराङ्मुखाय दीनाय न्यस्तशस्त्राय याचते ।
क्षत्रधर्मरतः प्राज्ञः कथं नु प्रहरेद्रणे ॥३॥
3. parāṅmukhāya dīnāya nyastaśastrāya yācate ,
kṣatradharmarataḥ prājñaḥ kathaṁ nu praharedraṇe.

3. How indeed would a wise person, devoted to the warrior's code (kṣatradharma), strike in battle one who has turned away, is helpless, has laid down their weapons, and is pleading?
द्वावेव किल वृष्णीनां तत्र ख्यातौ महारथौ ।
प्रद्युम्नश्च महाबाहुस्त्वं चैव युधि सात्वत ॥४॥
4. dvāveva kila vṛṣṇīnāṁ tatra khyātau mahārathau ,
pradyumnaśca mahābāhustvaṁ caiva yudhi sātvata.

4. Indeed, among the Vṛṣṇis, there were only two truly renowned great warriors (mahārathas) in battle: Pradyumna, the mighty-armed, and you, O Sātvata.
कथं प्रायोपविष्टाय पार्थेन छिन्नबाहवे ।
नृशंसं पतनीयं च तादृशं कृतवानसि ॥५॥
5. kathaṁ prāyopaviṣṭāya pārthena chinnabāhave ,
nṛśaṁsaṁ patanīyaṁ ca tādṛśaṁ kṛtavānasi.

5. How could you have committed such a cruel and disgraceful (pataniya) act against one who had resolved to fast unto death (prāyopaveśa) after his arms were cut off by Arjuna?
शपे सात्वत पुत्राभ्यामिष्टेन सुकृतेन च ।
अनतीतामिमां रात्रिं यदि त्वां वीरमानिनम् ॥६॥
6. śape sātvata putrābhyāmiṣṭena sukṛtena ca ,
anatītāmimāṁ rātriṁ yadi tvāṁ vīramāninam.

6. I swear by the two sons of Sātvata and by my most cherished good deeds that if, before this night passes, I do not kill you—who are so proud of being a hero, and who are currently unprotected by Pārtha (Arjuna) Jíṣṇu, along with your son and younger brother—then I shall fall into a dreadful hell, O disgrace among the Vṛṣṇis!
अरक्ष्यमाणं पार्थेन जिष्णुना ससुतानुजम् ।
न हन्यां निरये घोरे पतेयं वृष्णिपांसन ॥७॥
7. arakṣyamāṇaṁ pārthena jiṣṇunā sasutānujam ,
na hanyāṁ niraye ghore pateyaṁ vṛṣṇipāṁsana.

7. 8. Having spoken in this manner, the exceedingly furious and mighty Somadatta blew his conch-shell loudly and also let out a lion's roar.
ततः कमलपत्राक्षः सिंहदंष्ट्रो महाबलः ।
सात्वतो भृशसंक्रुद्धः सोमदत्तमथाब्रवीत् ॥९॥
9. tataḥ kamalapatrākṣaḥ siṁhadaṁṣṭro mahābalaḥ ,
sātvato bhṛśasaṁkruddhaḥ somadattamathābravīt.

sātvataḥ bhṛśasaṃkruddhaḥ somadattam atha abravīt

9. Thereafter, Sātvata, who was lotus-petal-eyed, lion-toothed, and mighty, became intensely enraged and then spoke to Somadatta.
हतो भूरिश्रवा वीरस्तव पुत्रो महारथः ।
शलश्चैव तथा राजन्भ्रातृव्यसनकर्शितः ॥१०॥
10. hato bhūriśravā vīrastava putro mahārathaḥ ,
śalaścaiva tathā rājanbhrātṛvyasanakarśitaḥ.
10. hataḥ bhūriśravāḥ vīraḥ tava putraḥ mahārathaḥ
śalaḥ ca eva tathā rājan bhrātṛvyasanakarśitaḥ
10. rājan tava putraḥ mahārathaḥ vīraḥ bhūriśravāḥ
hataḥ tathā ca śalaḥ bhrātṛvyasanakarśitaḥ
10. O King, your son, the great charioteer Bhūriśravas, a hero, has been slain. And similarly, Śala is distressed by the sorrow for his brother.
त्वां चाप्यद्य वधिष्यामि सपुत्रपशुबान्धवम् ।
तिष्ठेदानीं रणे यत्तः कौरवोऽसि विशेषतः ॥११॥
11. tvāṁ cāpyadya vadhiṣyāmi saputrapaśubāndhavam ,
tiṣṭhedānīṁ raṇe yattaḥ kauravo'si viśeṣataḥ.
11. tvām ca api adya vadhiṣyāmi saputrapashubāndhavam
tiṣṭha idānīm raṇe yattaḥ kauravaḥ asi viśeṣataḥ
11. adya tvām ca api saputrapashubāndhavam vadhiṣyāmi
idānīm raṇe yattaḥ tiṣṭha viśeṣataḥ kauravaḥ asi
11. Today, I will kill you along with your sons, cattle, and kinsmen. Stand firm now in battle, prepared, especially since you are a Kaurava.
यस्मिन्दानं दमः शौचमहिंसा ह्रीर्धृतिः क्षमा ।
अनपायीनि सर्वाणि नित्यं राज्ञि युधिष्ठिरे ॥१२॥
12. yasmindānaṁ damaḥ śaucamahiṁsā hrīrdhṛtiḥ kṣamā ,
anapāyīni sarvāṇi nityaṁ rājñi yudhiṣṭhire.
12. yasmin dānam damaḥ śaucam ahiṃsā hrīḥ dhṛtiḥ
kṣamā anapāyīni sarvāṇi nityam rājñi yudhiṣṭhire
12. rājñi yudhiṣṭhire yasmin dānam damaḥ śaucam
ahiṃsā hrīḥ dhṛtiḥ kṣamā sarvāṇi nityam anapāyīni
12. In King Yudhiṣṭhira, all these qualities—charity (dāna), self-control, purity, non-violence (ahiṃsā), modesty, fortitude, and forgiveness—are eternally present and never diminish.
मृदङ्गकेतोस्तस्य त्वं तेजसा निहतः पुरा ।
सकर्णसौबलः संख्ये विनाशं समुपेष्यसि ॥१३॥
13. mṛdaṅgaketostasya tvaṁ tejasā nihataḥ purā ,
sakarṇasaubalaḥ saṁkhye vināśaṁ samupeṣyasi.
13. mṛdaṅgaketoḥ tasya tvam tejasā nihataḥ purā
sakarṇasaubalaḥ saṅkhye vināśam samupeṣyasi
13. purā tvam tasya mṛdaṅgaketoḥ tejasā nihataḥ
sakarṇasaubalaḥ saṅkhye vināśam samupeṣyasi
13. You were previously struck down by the valor of that one whose banner bears a drum. Accompanied by Karṇa and Śakuni (Saubala), you will meet your destruction in battle.
शपेऽहं कृष्णचरणैरिष्टापूर्तेन चैव ह ।
यदि त्वां ससुतं पापं न हन्यां युधि रोषितः ।
अपयास्यसि चेत्त्यक्त्वा ततो मुक्तो भविष्यसि ॥१४॥
14. śape'haṁ kṛṣṇacaraṇairiṣṭāpūrtena caiva ha ,
yadi tvāṁ sasutaṁ pāpaṁ na hanyāṁ yudhi roṣitaḥ ,
apayāsyasi cettyaktvā tato mukto bhaviṣyasi.
14. śape aham kṛṣṇacaraṇaiḥ iṣṭāpūrtena
ca eva ha yadi tvām sasutam pāpam
na hanyām yudhi roṣitaḥ apayāsyasi
cet tyaktvā tataḥ muktaḥ bhaviṣyasi
14. aham kṛṣṇacaraṇaiḥ iṣṭāpūrtena ca
eva ha śape yadi roṣitaḥ sasutam pāpam
tvām yudhi na hanyām cet tyaktvā
apayāsyasi tataḥ muktaḥ bhaviṣyasi
14. I swear by the feet of Krishna and by my meritorious acts and charitable deeds (iṣṭāpūrta) that if I, enraged, do not kill you, the wicked one, along with your son, in battle. However, if you abandon the fight and run away, then you will be spared (from my vow).
एवमाभाष्य चान्योन्यं क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनौ ।
प्रवृत्तौ शरसंपातं कर्तुं पुरुषसत्तमौ ॥१५॥
15. evamābhāṣya cānyonyaṁ krodhasaṁraktalocanau ,
pravṛttau śarasaṁpātaṁ kartuṁ puruṣasattamau.
15. evam ābhāṣya ca anyonyam krodhasaṃraktalocanau
pravṛttau śarasaṃpātam kartum puruṣasattamau
15. krodhasaṃraktalocanau puruṣasattamau evam
anyonyam ābhāṣya ca śarasaṃpātam kartum pravṛttau
15. Having thus spoken to each other, the two best of men (puruṣasattamau), with eyes reddened by anger, began to unleash a shower of arrows.
ततो गजसहस्रेण रथानामयुतेन च ।
दुर्योधनः सोमदत्तं परिवार्य व्यवस्थितः ॥१६॥
16. tato gajasahasreṇa rathānāmayutena ca ,
duryodhanaḥ somadattaṁ parivārya vyavasthitaḥ.
16. tataḥ gajasahasreṇa rathānām ayutena ca
duryodhanaḥ somadattam parivārya vyavasthitaḥ
16. tataḥ duryodhanaḥ somadattam parivārya
gajasahasreṇa ca rathānām ayutena vyavasthitaḥ
16. Then, Duryodhana, having surrounded Somadatta, stood positioned with a thousand elephants (gaja) and ten thousand chariots.
शकुनिश्च सुसंक्रुद्धः सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः ।
पुत्रपौत्रैः परिवृतो भ्रातृभिश्चेन्द्रविक्रमैः ।
स्यालस्तव महाबाहुर्वज्रसंहननो युवा ॥१७॥
17. śakuniśca susaṁkruddhaḥ sarvaśastrabhṛtāṁ varaḥ ,
putrapautraiḥ parivṛto bhrātṛbhiścendravikramaiḥ ,
syālastava mahābāhurvajrasaṁhanano yuvā.
17. śakuniḥ ca susaṃkruddhaḥ sarvaśastrabhṛtām
varaḥ putrapautraiḥ parivṛtaḥ
bhrātṛbhiḥ ca indravikramaiḥ syālaḥ

17. tava syālaḥ śakuniḥ ca susaṃkruddhaḥ
sarvaśastrabhṛtām varaḥ putrapautraiḥ
ca indravikramaiḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ
parivṛtaḥ mahābāhuḥ vajrasaṃhananaḥ yuvā
17. And your mighty-armed (mahābāhu) brother-in-law, Shakuni, who was greatly enraged (susaṃkruddhaḥ), the best among all weapon-bearers, and whose body was firm as a thunderbolt (vajrasaṃhanana), a youth, stood surrounded by his sons, grandsons, and brothers who possessed the valor of Indra.
साग्रं शतसहस्रं तु हयानां तस्य धीमतः ।
सोमदत्तं महेष्वासं समन्तात्पर्यरक्षत ॥१८॥
18. sāgraṁ śatasahasraṁ tu hayānāṁ tasya dhīmataḥ ,
somadattaṁ maheṣvāsaṁ samantātparyarakṣata.
18. sāgram śatasahasram tu hayānām tasya dhīmataḥ
somadattam maheṣvāsam samantāt paryarakṣata
18. tasya dhīmataḥ somadattam maheṣvāsam sāgram
śatasahasram tu hayānām samantāt paryarakṣata
18. A hundred thousand horses, or even more, belonging to that intelligent Somadatta, the great archer, protected him from all sides.
रक्ष्यमाणश्च बलिभिश्छादयामास सात्यकिम् ।
तं छाद्यमानं विशिखैर्दृष्ट्वा संनतपर्वभिः ।
धृष्टद्युम्नोऽभ्ययात्क्रुद्धः प्रगृह्य महतीं चमूम् ॥१९॥
19. rakṣyamāṇaśca balibhiśchādayāmāsa sātyakim ,
taṁ chādyamānaṁ viśikhairdṛṣṭvā saṁnataparvabhiḥ ,
dhṛṣṭadyumno'bhyayātkruddhaḥ pragṛhya mahatīṁ camūm.
19. rakṣyamāṇaḥ ca balibhiḥ chādayāmāsa
sātyakim tam chādyamānam viśikhaiḥ dṛṣṭvā
sannataparvabhiḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ
abhyayāt kruddhaḥ pragṛhya mahatīm camūm
19. rakṣyamāṇaḥ ca balibhiḥ sātyakim
chādayāmāsa tam sannataparvabhiḥ viśikhaiḥ
chādyamānam dṛṣṭvā dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ
kruddhaḥ mahatīm camūm pragṛhya abhyayāt
19. And being protected by mighty warriors, he (Somadatta) deluged Sātyaki (with arrows). Seeing him being covered by those well-jointed arrows, Dhṛṣṭadyumna, enraged, advanced, leading a large army.
चण्डवाताभिसृष्टानामुदधीनामिव स्वनः ।
आसीद्राजन्बलौघानामन्योन्यमभिनिघ्नताम् ॥२०॥
20. caṇḍavātābhisṛṣṭānāmudadhīnāmiva svanaḥ ,
āsīdrājanbalaughānāmanyonyamabhinighnatām.
20. caṇḍavātābhisṛṣṭānām udadhīnām iva svanaḥ
āsīt rājan balaughānām anyonyam abhinighnatām
20. rājan anyonyam abhinighnatām balaughānām
svanaḥ caṇḍavātābhisṛṣṭānām udadhīnām iva āsīt
20. O King, the sound of the multitudes of forces clashing with each other was like that of oceans churned by fierce winds.
विव्याध सोमदत्तस्तु सात्वतं नवभिः शरैः ।
सात्यकिर्दशभिश्चैनमवधीत्कुरुपुंगवम् ॥२१॥
21. vivyādha somadattastu sātvataṁ navabhiḥ śaraiḥ ,
sātyakirdaśabhiścainamavadhītkurupuṁgavam.
21. vivyādha somadattaḥ tu sātvatam navabhiḥ śaraiḥ
sātyakiḥ daśabhiḥ ca enam avadhīt kurupuṅgavam
21. somadattaḥ tu navabhiḥ śaraiḥ sātvatam vivyādha
sātyakiḥ ca daśabhiḥ enam kurupuṅgavam avadhīt
21. But Somadatta pierced Sātvata (Sātyaki) with nine arrows. And Sātyaki, in turn, struck that best among the Kurus (Somadatta) with ten (arrows).
सोऽतिविद्धो बलवता समरे दृढधन्वना ।
रथोपस्थं समासाद्य मुमोह गतचेतनः ॥२२॥
22. so'tividdho balavatā samare dṛḍhadhanvanā ,
rathopasthaṁ samāsādya mumoha gatacetanaḥ.
22. saḥ atividdhaḥ balavatā samare dṛḍhadhanvanā
rathopasthaṃ samāsādya mumoha gatacetanaḥ
22. saḥ balavatā dṛḍhadhanvanā samare atividdhaḥ

22. Deeply pierced in battle by the strong, firm-bowed warrior, he reached the chariot platform and fainted, having lost consciousness.
तं विमूढं समालक्ष्य सारथिस्त्वरयान्वितः ।
अपोवाह रणाद्वीरं सोमदत्तं महारथम् ॥२३॥
23. taṁ vimūḍhaṁ samālakṣya sārathistvarayānvitaḥ ,
apovāha raṇādvīraṁ somadattaṁ mahāratham.
23. taṃ vimūḍhaṃ samālakṣya sārathiḥ tvarayānvitaḥ
apovāha raṇāt vīraṃ somadattaṃ mahāratham
23. sārathiḥ tvarayānvitaḥ taṃ vimūḍhaṃ vīraṃ

23. Seeing him bewildered, the swift charioteer drove away the hero Somadatta, that great warrior (mahāratha), from the battle.
तं विसंज्ञं समालोक्य युयुधानशरार्दितम् ।
द्रौणिरभ्यद्रवत्क्रुद्धः सात्वतं रणमूर्धनि ॥२४॥
24. taṁ visaṁjñaṁ samālokya yuyudhānaśarārditam ,
drauṇirabhyadravatkruddhaḥ sātvataṁ raṇamūrdhani.
24. taṃ visaṃjñaṃ samālokya yuyudhānaśarārditam
drauṇiḥ abhyadravat kruddhaḥ sātvataṃ raṇamūrdhani
24. drauṇiḥ kruddhaḥ taṃ visaṃjñaṃ yuyudhānaśarārditam

24. Seeing him unconscious and afflicted by Yuyudhāna's arrows, Drauni (Aśvatthāmā), enraged, rushed towards Sātvata (Satyaki) at the forefront of the battle.
तमापतन्तं संप्रेक्ष्य शैनेयस्य रथं प्रति ।
भैमसेनिः सुसंक्रुद्धः प्रत्यमित्रमवारयत् ॥२५॥
25. tamāpatantaṁ saṁprekṣya śaineyasya rathaṁ prati ,
bhaimaseniḥ susaṁkruddhaḥ pratyamitramavārayat.
25. taṃ āpatantaṃ samprekṣya śaineyasya rathaṃ prati
bhaimaseniḥ susaṃkruddhaḥ pratiamitram avārayat
25. bhaimaseniḥ susaṃkruddhaḥ śaineyasya rathaṃ prati

25. Seeing him (Drauni) approaching Śaineya's (Satyaki's) chariot, Bhīmasena's son (Bhīma), greatly enraged, blocked the enemy.
कार्ष्णायसमयं घोरमृक्षचर्मावृतं महत् ।
युक्तं गजनिभैर्वाहैर्न हयैर्नापि वा गजैः ॥२६॥
26. kārṣṇāyasamayaṁ ghoramṛkṣacarmāvṛtaṁ mahat ,
yuktaṁ gajanibhairvāhairna hayairnāpi vā gajaiḥ.
26. kārṣṇāyasamayam ghoram ṛkṣacarma-āvṛtam mahat yuktam
gajanibhaiḥ vāhaiḥ na hayaiḥ na api vā gajaiḥ
26. [tat] mahat ghoram kārṣṇāyasamayam ṛkṣacarma-āvṛtam
yuktam gajanibhaiḥ vāhaiḥ na hayaiḥ na api vā gajaiḥ
26. A great and dreadful chariot, made of black iron and covered with bear skin, was yoked not with horses or elephants, but with elephant-like steeds.
विक्षिप्तमष्टचक्रेण विवृताक्षेण कूजता ।
ध्वजेनोच्छ्रिततुण्डेन गृध्रराजेन राजता ॥२७॥
27. vikṣiptamaṣṭacakreṇa vivṛtākṣeṇa kūjatā ,
dhvajenocchritatuṇḍena gṛdhrarājena rājatā.
27. vikṣiptam aṣṭacakreṇa vivṛta-akṣeṇa kūjatā
dhvajena ucchrita-tuṇḍena gṛdhrarājena rājatā
27. [tat] aṣṭacakreṇa vikṣiptam,
dhvajena ca rājatā gṛdhrarājena ucchrita-tuṇḍena vivṛta-akṣeṇa kūjatā [ca āsīt]
27. It (the chariot) was set in motion by its eight wheels; and its banner displayed a resplendent king of vultures, with an uplifted beak, open eyes, and making a screeching sound.
लोहितार्द्रपताकं तमन्त्रमालाविभूषितम् ।

28. Having mounted that vast chariot, which was equipped with eight wheels, adorned with a garland of entrails, and bore a blood-moistened banner.

रक्षसां घोररूपाणामक्षौहिण्या समावृतः ॥२९॥
29. śūlamudgaradhāriṇyā śailapādapahastayā ,

29. He was surrounded by an akṣauhiṇī (army division) of terrifying Rākṣasas (demons), who bore spears and maces and held mountains and trees in their hands.

युगान्तकालसमये दण्डहस्तमिवान्तकम् ॥३०॥
30. tamudyatamahācāpaṁ niśāmya vyathitā nṛpāḥ ,

30. Seeing him with his great bow raised, the kings were distressed, like Death (Antaka) holding a staff at the time of the dissolution of the cosmic age (yugānta).
भयार्दिता प्रचुक्षोभ पुत्रस्य तव वाहिनी ।
वायुना क्षोभितावर्ता गङ्गेवोर्ध्वतरङ्गिणी ॥३१॥

31. Your son's army, distressed by fear, was greatly agitated, just like the Gaṅgā river, with its agitated whirlpools and high waves, stirred by the wind.
घटोत्कचप्रयुक्तेन सिंहनादेन भीषिताः ।
प्रसुस्रुवुर्गजा मूत्रं विव्यथुश्च नरा भृशम् ॥३२॥
32. ghaṭotkacaprayuktena siṁhanādena bhīṣitāḥ ,

32. Terrified by the lion's roar (siṃhanāda) unleashed by Ghaṭotkaca, the elephants discharged urine, and the men were greatly distressed.
ततोऽश्मवृष्टिरत्यर्थमासीत्तत्र समन्ततः ।
संध्याकालाधिकबलैः प्रमुक्ता राक्षसैः क्षितौ ॥३३॥
33. tato'śmavṛṣṭiratyarthamāsīttatra samantataḥ ,
saṁdhyākālādhikabalaiḥ pramuktā rākṣasaiḥ kṣitau.

33. Then, an exceedingly heavy shower of stones occurred all around there, discharged onto the ground by the Rākṣasas, whose strength was augmented during twilight.
आयसानि च चक्राणि भुशुण्ड्यः प्रासतोमराः ।
पतन्त्यविरलाः शूलाः शतघ्न्यः पट्टिशास्तथा ॥३४॥
34. āyasāni ca cakrāṇi bhuśuṇḍyaḥ prāsatomarāḥ ,
patantyaviralāḥ śūlāḥ śataghnyaḥ paṭṭiśāstathā.

34. Iron discs, maces, spears, lances, pikes, śataghnya weapons, and paṭṭiśa weapons fell incessantly.
तदुग्रमतिरौद्रं च दृष्ट्वा युद्धं नराधिपाः ।
तनयास्तव कर्णश्च व्यथिताः प्राद्रवन्दिशः ॥३५॥
35. tadugramatiraudraṁ ca dṛṣṭvā yuddhaṁ narādhipāḥ ,

35. Seeing that fierce and exceedingly dreadful battle, your sons and Karna, distressed, fled in all directions.
तत्रैकोऽस्त्रबलश्लाघी द्रौणिर्मानी न विव्यथे ।
व्यधमच्च शरैर्मायां घटोत्कचविनिर्मिताम् ॥३६॥
36. tatraiko'strabalaślāghī drauṇirmānī na vivyathe ,

36. Among them, Drona's proud son (Ashvatthama), who boasted of his missile power, was not distressed. He dispelled the illusion (māyā) created by Ghatotkacha with his arrows.
निहतायां तु मायायाममर्षी स घटोत्कचः ।
विससर्ज शरान्घोरांस्तेऽश्वत्थामानमाविशन् ॥३७॥
37. nihatāyāṁ tu māyāyāmamarṣī sa ghaṭotkacaḥ ,

37. But when that illusion (māyā) was dispelled, that enraged Ghatotkacha discharged terrible arrows, and they pierced Ashvatthama.
भुजगा इव वेगेन वल्मीकं क्रोधमूर्छिताः ।
ते शरा रुधिराभ्यक्ता भित्त्वा शारद्वतीसुतम् ।
विविशुर्धरणीं शीघ्रा रुक्मपुङ्खाः शिलाशिताः ॥३८॥
38. bhujagā iva vegena valmīkaṁ krodhamūrchitāḥ ,
te śarā rudhirābhyaktā bhittvā śāradvatīsutam ,
viviśurdharaṇīṁ śīghrā rukmapuṅkhāḥ śilāśitāḥ.

38. Maddened by rage, those swift arrows, like snakes entering an anthill, had golden shafts and sharpened tips. Smeared with blood, they pierced the son of Śāradvatī (Aśvatthāmā) and then swiftly penetrated the earth.
अश्वत्थामा तु संक्रुद्धो लघुहस्तः प्रतापवान् ।
घटोत्कचमभिक्रुद्धं बिभेद दशभिः शरैः ॥३९॥

39. But Aśvatthāmā, who was greatly enraged, quick-handed, and powerful, pierced the also greatly enraged Ghaṭotkaca with ten arrows.

चक्रं शतसहस्रारमगृह्णाद्व्यथितो भृशम् ॥४०॥
40. ghaṭotkaco'tividdhastu droṇaputreṇa marmasu ,

40. But Ghaṭotkaca, having been deeply pierced in his vital spots by Droṇa's son (Aśvatthāmā), became greatly distressed and seized a disc with a hundred thousand spokes.
क्षुरान्तं बालसूर्याभं मणिवज्रविभूषितम् ।
अश्वत्थाम्नस्तु चिक्षेप भैमसेनिर्जिघांसया ॥४१॥
41. kṣurāntaṁ bālasūryābhaṁ maṇivajravibhūṣitam ,

41. That disc, with razor-sharp edges, shining like the morning sun, and adorned with jewels and diamonds, was hurled by Bhīmasena's son (Ghaṭotkaca) at Aśvatthāmā with the desire to kill him.
वेगेन महता गच्छद्विक्षिप्तं द्रौणिना शरैः ।
अभाग्यस्येव संकल्पस्तन्मोघं न्यपतद्भुवि ॥४२॥
42. vegena mahatā gacchadvikṣiptaṁ drauṇinā śaraiḥ ,
abhāgyasyeva saṁkalpastanmoghaṁ nyapatadbhuvi.

42. That [discus], moving with immense velocity, was shattered by Droṇi with his arrows. Just like the failed resolve of an unlucky person, it fell uselessly to the ground.
घटोत्कचस्ततस्तूर्णं दृष्ट्वा चक्रं निपातितम् ।
द्रौणिं प्राच्छादयद्बाणैः स्वर्भानुरिव भास्करम् ॥४३॥
43. ghaṭotkacastatastūrṇaṁ dṛṣṭvā cakraṁ nipātitam ,

43. Ghaṭotkaca, then, swiftly seeing the discus struck down, enveloped Droṇi with his arrows, just as the demon Rāhu (Svarbhānu) eclipses the sun (Bhāskara).
घटोत्कचसुतः श्रीमान्भिन्नाञ्जनचयोपमः ।
रुरोध द्रौणिमायान्तं प्रभञ्जनमिवाद्रिराट् ॥४४॥

44. The glorious son of Ghaṭotkaca, whose complexion was like a heap of crushed antimony, blocked Droṇi as he advanced, much like a lord of mountains (adrirāṭ) holds back a powerful gale (prabhañjana).
पौत्रेण भीमसेनस्य शरैः सोऽञ्जनपर्वणा ।
बभौ मेघेन धाराभिर्गिरिर्मेरुरिवार्दितः ॥४५॥
45. pautreṇa bhīmasenasya śaraiḥ so'ñjanaparvaṇā ,
babhau meghena dhārābhirgirirmerurivārditaḥ.

45. He (Droṇi), struck by the arrows of Bhīmasena's grandson, who was likened to a mountain of collyrium, appeared like Mount Meru assailed by clouds (megha) and torrents (dhārābhiḥ).
अश्वत्थामा त्वसंभ्रान्तो रुद्रोपेन्द्रेन्द्रविक्रमः ।
ध्वजमेकेन बाणेन चिच्छेदाञ्जनपर्वणः ॥४६॥
46. aśvatthāmā tvasaṁbhrānto rudropendrendravikramaḥ ,

46. Ashvatthāmā, unperturbed and possessing the valor of Rudra, Upendra (Viṣṇu), and Indra, cut down the banner of Añjanaparvan with a single arrow.
द्वाभ्यां तु रथयन्तारं त्रिभिश्चास्य त्रिवेणुकम् ।
धनुरेकेन चिच्छेद चतुर्भिश्चतुरो हयान् ॥४७॥
47. dvābhyāṁ tu rathayantāraṁ tribhiścāsya triveṇukam ,
dhanurekena ciccheda caturbhiścaturo hayān.

47. And with two (arrows), he cut down his charioteer, and with three, his triple-plumed standard, with one (arrow) his bow, and with four (arrows), his four horses.
विरथस्योद्यतं हस्ताद्धेमबिन्दुभिराचितम् ।
विशिखेन सुतीक्ष्णेन खड्गमस्य द्विधाकरोत् ॥४८॥
48. virathasyodyataṁ hastāddhemabindubhirācitam ,
viśikhena sutīkṣṇena khaḍgamasya dvidhākarot.

48. With a very sharp arrow, he cut into two pieces the sword of the now charioteerless (Añjanaparvan), which was raised from his hand and adorned with golden dots.
गदा हेमाङ्गदा राजंस्तूर्णं हैडिम्बसूनुना ।
भ्राम्योत्क्षिप्ता शरैः सापि द्रौणिनाभ्याहतापतत् ॥४९॥
49. gadā hemāṅgadā rājaṁstūrṇaṁ haiḍimbasūnunā ,
bhrāmyotkṣiptā śaraiḥ sāpi drauṇinābhyāhatāpatat.

49. O King, that mace, adorned with gold, which was swiftly whirled and hurled (into the air) by the son of Hiḍimbā (Ghaṭotkaca), was also struck by Droṇa's son (Aśvatthāmā) with arrows and fell down.
ततोऽन्तरिक्षमुत्पत्य कालमेघ इवोन्नदन् ।
ववर्षाञ्जनपर्वा स द्रुमवर्षं नभस्तलात् ॥५०॥
50. tato'ntarikṣamutpatya kālamegha ivonnadan ,
vavarṣāñjanaparvā sa drumavarṣaṁ nabhastalāt.

50. Then, soaring into the sky and thundering like a dark cloud, Añjanaparvan rained down a shower of trees from the firmament.
ततो मायाधरं द्रौणिर्घटोत्कचसुतं दिवि ।
मार्गणैरभिविव्याध घनं सूर्य इवांशुभिः ॥५१॥
51. tato māyādharaṁ drauṇirghaṭotkacasutaṁ divi ,
mārgaṇairabhivivyādha ghanaṁ sūrya ivāṁśubhiḥ.

51. Then, Drauṇi (Ashvatthama) pierced the illusion-wielding son of Ghaṭotkaca in the sky with his arrows, just as the sun pierces a cloud with its rays.
सोऽवतीर्य पुनस्तस्थौ रथे हेमपरिष्कृते ।
महीधर इवात्युच्चः श्रीमानञ्जनपर्वतः ॥५२॥
52. so'vatīrya punastasthau rathe hemapariṣkṛte ,
mahīdhara ivātyuccaḥ śrīmānañjanaparvataḥ.

52. Having descended, he stood again in his gold-adorned chariot, appearing like the exceedingly tall and glorious Añjana mountain.

जघानाञ्जनपर्वाणं महेश्वर इवान्धकम् ॥५३॥

53. Drauṇi (Ashvatthama) struck Añjanaparvan, who wore iron armor and was the son of Bhīma's son, just as Maheśvara (Śiva) struck the demon Andhaka.
अथ दृष्ट्वा हतं पुत्रमश्वत्थाम्ना महाबलम् ।
द्रौणेः सकाशमभ्येत्य रोषात्प्रचलिताङ्गदः ॥५४॥

54. Then, seeing his mighty son slain by Aśvatthāman, and approaching Droṇa's son (Aśvatthāman), his armlets shook with rage.
प्राह वाक्यमसंभ्रान्तो वीरं शारद्वतीसुतम् ।
दहन्तं पाण्डवानीकं वनमग्निमिवोद्धतम् ॥५५॥
55. prāha vākyamasaṁbhrānto vīraṁ śāradvatīsutam ,
dahantaṁ pāṇḍavānīkaṁ vanamagnimivoddhatam.

55. Undeterred, he spoke to the hero, the son of Śāradvatī (Aśvatthāman), who was burning the Pāṇḍava army like a fierce fire consuming a forest.
तिष्ठ तिष्ठ न मे जीवन्द्रोणपुत्र गमिष्यसि ।
त्वामद्य निहनिष्यामि क्रौञ्चमग्निसुतो यथा ॥५६॥
56. tiṣṭha tiṣṭha na me jīvandroṇaputra gamiṣyasi ,
tvāmadya nihaniṣyāmi krauñcamagnisuto yathā.

56. Stop, stop! Son of Droṇa, you shall not leave here alive! Today I will kill you, just as the son of Agni (Kārtikeya) killed Krauñca.
अश्वत्थामोवाच ।
गच्छ वत्स सहान्यैस्त्वं युध्यस्वामरविक्रम ।
न हि पुत्रेण हैडिम्बे पिता न्याय्यं प्रबाधितुम् ॥५७॥
57. aśvatthāmovāca ,
gaccha vatsa sahānyaistvaṁ yudhyasvāmaravikrama ,
na hi putreṇa haiḍimbe pitā nyāyyaṁ prabādhitum.
57. aśvatthāmā uvāca gaccha vatsa saha anyaiḥ tvam yudhyasva
amaravikrama na hi putreṇa haiḍimbe pitā nyāyyam prabādhitum

57. Aśvatthāman replied: 'Go, my child, you of divine prowess, fight with others! For indeed, O son of Hiḍimbā (Ghaṭotkaca), it is not proper for a son to obstruct a father.'
कामं खलु न मे रोषो हैडिम्बे विद्यते त्वयि ।
किं तु रोषान्वितो जन्तुर्हन्यादात्मानमप्युत ॥५८॥
58. kāmaṁ khalu na me roṣo haiḍimbe vidyate tvayi ,
kiṁ tu roṣānvito janturhanyādātmānamapyuta.
58. kāmam khalu na me roṣaḥ haiḍimbe vidyate tvayi |
kim tu roṣānvitaḥ jantuḥ hanyāt ātmānam api uta
58. kāmam khalu me tvayi haiḍimbe roṣaḥ na vidyate
kim tu roṣānvitaḥ jantuḥ ātmānam api uta hanyāt
58. Indeed, I certainly have no anger towards you regarding Ghatotkacha (Haiḍimba). But an enraged being might even destroy himself (ātman).
संजय उवाच ।
श्रुत्वैतत्क्रोधताम्राक्षः पुत्रशोकसमन्वितः ।
अश्वत्थामानमायस्तो भैमसेनिरभाषत ॥५९॥
59. saṁjaya uvāca ,
śrutvaitatkrodhatāmrākṣaḥ putraśokasamanvitaḥ ,
aśvatthāmānamāyasto bhaimasenirabhāṣata.

59. Sanjaya said: Having heard this, Bhīmaseni (Bhima), whose eyes were red with anger and who was filled with grief for his son, spoke to Ashwatthama, feeling distressed.
किमहं कातरो द्रौणे पृथग्जन इवाहवे ।
भीमात्खल्वहमुत्पन्नः कुरूणां विपुले कुले ॥६०॥
60. kimahaṁ kātaro drauṇe pṛthagjana ivāhave ,
bhīmātkhalvahamutpannaḥ kurūṇāṁ vipule kule.
60. kim aham kātaraḥ drauṇe pṛthagjanaḥ iva āhave |
bhīmāt khalu aham utpannaḥ kurūṇām vipule kule

60. O son of Droṇa, am I cowardly like a common man in battle? Indeed, I was born from Bhima, into the illustrious lineage of the Kurus.
पाण्डवानामहं पुत्रः समरेष्वनिवर्तिनाम् ।
रक्षसामधिराजोऽहं दशग्रीवसमो बले ॥६१॥
61. pāṇḍavānāmahaṁ putraḥ samareṣvanivartinām ,
rakṣasāmadhirājo'haṁ daśagrīvasamo bale.
61. pāṇḍavānām aham putraḥ samareṣu anivartinām
| rakṣasām adhirājaḥ aham daśagrīvasamaḥ bale

61. I am a scion of the Pāṇḍavas, who never retreat in battles. I am the sovereign king of the Rākṣasas, equal in strength to Daśagrīva (Rāvaṇa).
तिष्ठ तिष्ठ न मे जीवन्द्रोणपुत्र गमिष्यसि ।
युद्धश्रद्धामहं तेऽद्य विनेष्यामि रणाजिरे ॥६२॥
62. tiṣṭha tiṣṭha na me jīvandroṇaputra gamiṣyasi ,
yuddhaśraddhāmahaṁ te'dya vineṣyāmi raṇājire.

62. Stop! Stop! Son of Droṇa, you will not escape alive from me. Today, I will extinguish your desire for battle on this battlefield.
इत्युक्त्वा रोषताम्राक्षो राक्षसः सुमहाबलः ।
द्रौणिमभ्यद्रवत्क्रुद्धो गजेन्द्रमिव केसरी ॥६३॥
63. ityuktvā roṣatāmrākṣo rākṣasaḥ sumahābalaḥ ,
drauṇimabhyadravatkruddho gajendramiva kesarī.
63. iti uktvā roṣatāmrākṣaḥ rākṣasaḥ sumahābalaḥ

63. Having spoken thus, the exceedingly mighty demon, whose eyes were red with rage and who was furious, rushed towards Droṇa's son, just as a lion attacks a mighty elephant.
रथाक्षमात्रैरिषुभिरभ्यवर्षद्घटोत्कचः ।
रथिनामृषभं द्रौणिं धाराभिरिव तोयदः ॥६४॥
64. rathākṣamātrairiṣubhirabhyavarṣadghaṭotkacaḥ ,
rathināmṛṣabhaṁ drauṇiṁ dhārābhiriva toyadaḥ.
64. rathākṣamātraiḥ iṣubhiḥ abhyavarṣat ghaṭotkacaḥ
rathinām ṛṣabham drauṇim dhārābhiḥ iva toyadaḥ

iṣubhiḥ rathinām ṛṣabham drauṇim abhyavarṣat
64. Ghaṭotkaca showered Droṇa's son, the foremost among charioteers, with arrows as thick as chariot-axles, just as a cloud pours down with streams of rain.
शरवृष्टिं शरैर्द्रौणिरप्राप्तां तां व्यशातयत् ।
ततोऽन्तरिक्षे बाणानां संग्रामोऽन्य इवाभवत् ॥६५॥
65. śaravṛṣṭiṁ śarairdrauṇiraprāptāṁ tāṁ vyaśātayat ,
tato'ntarikṣe bāṇānāṁ saṁgrāmo'nya ivābhavat.
65. śaravṛṣṭim śaraiḥ drauṇiḥ aprāptām tām vyaśātayat
tataḥ antarikṣe bāṇānām saṅgrāmaḥ anyaḥ iva abhavat

65. Droṇa's son, with his own arrows, shattered that unreached shower of arrows. Then, in the sky, a battle of arrows ensued, as if it were a distinct combat.
अथास्त्रसंघर्षकृतैर्विस्फुलिङ्गैः समाबभौ ।
विभावरीमुखे व्योम खद्योतैरिव चित्रितम् ॥६६॥
66. athāstrasaṁgharṣakṛtairvisphuliṅgaiḥ samābabhau ,
vibhāvarīmukhe vyoma khadyotairiva citritam.
66. atha astra-saṃgharṣa-kṛtaiḥ visphuliṅgaiḥ samābabhau
vibhāvarī-mukhe vyoma khadyotaiḥ iva citritam

66. Then, the sky appeared adorned with sparks generated by the clash of weapons, much like it is embellished by fireflies at the beginning of the night.
निशाम्य निहतां मायां द्रौणिना रणमानिना ।
घटोत्कचस्ततो मायां ससर्जान्तर्हितः पुनः ॥६७॥
67. niśāmya nihatāṁ māyāṁ drauṇinā raṇamāninā ,
ghaṭotkacastato māyāṁ sasarjāntarhitaḥ punaḥ.

67. Having observed his illusion (māyā) destroyed by Droṇi, who was confident in battle, Ghatotkacha then disappeared and again created another illusion (māyā).
सोऽभवद्गिरिरत्युच्चः शिखरैस्तरुसंकटैः ।
शूलप्रासासिमुसलजलप्रस्रवणो महान् ॥६८॥
68. so'bhavadgiriratyuccaḥ śikharaistarusaṁkaṭaiḥ ,
śūlaprāsāsimusalajalaprasravaṇo mahān.
68. saḥ abhavat giriḥ atyuccaḥ śikharaiḥ tarusaṃkaṭaiḥ
śūlaprāsāsimusalajalaprasravaṇaḥ mahān
68. saḥ mahān atyuccaḥ tarusaṃkaṭaiḥ śikharaiḥ
śūlaprāsāsimusalajalaprasravaṇaḥ giriḥ abhavat
68. That illusion (māyā) became a massive, very high mountain, whose peaks were densely covered with trees, and from which spears, javelins, swords, and maces flowed forth as if they were water.
तमञ्जनचयप्रख्यं द्रौणिर्दृष्ट्वा महीधरम् ।
प्रपतद्भिश्च बहुभिः शस्त्रसंघैर्न चुक्षुभे ॥६९॥
69. tamañjanacayaprakhyaṁ drauṇirdṛṣṭvā mahīdharam ,
prapatadbhiśca bahubhiḥ śastrasaṁghairna cukṣubhe.
69. tam añjanacayaprakhyaṃ drauṇiḥ dṛṣṭvā mahīdharaṃ
prapatadbhiḥ ca bahubhiḥ śastrasaṃghaiḥ na cukṣubhe

69. Having seen that mountain, which resembled a heap of collyrium, Droṇi was not perturbed, even by the numerous masses of weapons falling from it.
ततः स्मयन्निव द्रौणिर्वज्रमस्त्रमुदीरयत् ।
स तेनास्त्रेण शैलेन्द्रः क्षिप्तः क्षिप्रमनश्यत ॥७०॥
70. tataḥ smayanniva drauṇirvajramastramudīrayat ,
sa tenāstreṇa śailendraḥ kṣiptaḥ kṣipramanaśyata.

70. Then, as if smiling, Droṇa's son (Drauṇi) discharged the Vajra weapon. That lord of mountains, struck by that missile, quickly perished.
ततः स तोयदो भूत्वा नीलः सेन्द्रायुधो दिवि ।
अश्मवृष्टिभिरत्युग्रो द्रौणिमाच्छादयद्रणे ॥७१॥
71. tataḥ sa toyado bhūtvā nīlaḥ sendrāyudho divi ,
aśmavṛṣṭibhiratyugro drauṇimācchādayadraṇe.
71. tataḥ saḥ toyadaḥ bhūtvā nīlaḥ sa-indrāyudhaḥ divi
aśma-vṛṣṭibhiḥ atyugraḥ drauṇim ācchādayat raṇe

71. Then, having transformed into a blue cloud adorned with a rainbow in the sky, that exceedingly fierce (mountain-warrior) covered Drauṇi with a hail of stones in the battle.
अथ संधाय वायव्यमस्त्रमस्त्रविदां वरः ।
व्यधमद्द्रोणतनयो नीलमेघं समुत्थितम् ॥७२॥
72. atha saṁdhāya vāyavyamastramastravidāṁ varaḥ ,
vyadhamaddroṇatanayo nīlameghaṁ samutthitam.
72. atha saṃdhāya vāyavyam astram astra-vidām varaḥ
vyadhamat droṇa-tanayaḥ nīlam megham samutthitam

72. Then, the best among those knowledgeable in weapons, Droṇa's son (Drauṇi), having prepared the Vāyavya missile, dispersed the risen blue cloud.
स मार्गणगणैर्द्रौणिर्दिशः प्रच्छाद्य सर्वतः ।
शतं रथसहस्राणां जघान द्विपदां वरः ॥७३॥
73. sa mārgaṇagaṇairdrauṇirdiśaḥ pracchādya sarvataḥ ,
śataṁ rathasahasrāṇāṁ jaghāna dvipadāṁ varaḥ.
73. saḥ mārgaṇa-gaṇaiḥ drauṇiḥ diśaḥ pracchādya sarvataḥ
śatam ratha-sahasrāṇām jaghāna dvipadām varaḥ
73. saḥ drauṇiḥ dvipadām varaḥ mārgaṇa-gaṇaiḥ sarvataḥ diśaḥ pracchādya śatam ratha-sahasrāṇām jaghāna.
73. That best among men (Drauṇi), having covered all directions with multitudes of arrows, then struck down a hundred thousand chariots.
स दृष्ट्वा पुनरायान्तं रथेनायतकार्मुकम् ।
घटोत्कचमसंभ्रान्तं राक्षसैर्बहुभिर्वृतम् ॥७४॥
74. sa dṛṣṭvā punarāyāntaṁ rathenāyatakārmukam ,
ghaṭotkacamasaṁbhrāntaṁ rākṣasairbahubhirvṛtam.
74. saḥ dṛṣṭvā punaḥ āyāntam rathena āyata-kārmukam
ghaṭotkacam asaṃbhrāntam rākṣasaiḥ bahubhiḥ vṛtam

74. He, having seen Ghatotkaca, who was unperturbed and approaching again in his chariot with a drawn bow, surrounded by many rākṣasas (rākṣasa) (who were described as follows):
सिंहशार्दूलसदृशैर्मत्तद्विरदविक्रमैः ।
गजस्थैश्च रथस्थैश्च वाजिपृष्ठगतैरपि ॥७५॥
75. siṁhaśārdūlasadṛśairmattadviradavikramaiḥ ,
gajasthaiśca rathasthaiśca vājipṛṣṭhagatairapi.
75. siṃha-śārdūla-sadṛśaiḥ matta-dvirada-vikramaiḥ
gajasthaiḥ ca rathasthaiḥ ca vāji-pṛṣṭha-gataiḥ api
75. (rākṣasaiḥ) siṃha-śārdūla-sadṛśaiḥ matta-dvirada-vikramaiḥ
gajasthaiḥ ca rathasthaiḥ ca vāji-pṛṣṭha-gataiḥ api (vṛtam)
75. (These rākṣasas were) resembling lions and tigers, possessing the might of rutting elephants, some mounted on elephants, others in chariots, and still others on horseback,
विवृतास्यशिरोग्रीवैर्हैडिम्बानुचरैः सह ।
पौलस्त्यैर्यातुधानैश्च तामसैश्चोग्रविक्रमैः ॥७६॥
76. vivṛtāsyaśirogrīvairhaiḍimbānucaraiḥ saha ,
paulastyairyātudhānaiśca tāmasaiścogravikramaiḥ.
76. vivṛta-āsya-śiro-grīvaiḥ haiḍimba-anucaraiḥ saha
paulastyaiḥ yātudhānaiḥ ca tāmasaiḥ ca ugra-vikramaiḥ

76. (These rākṣasas were) whose mouths, heads, and necks were wide open, accompanied by the followers of Ghatotkaca (Haiḍimba), and by Poulastya rākṣasas and Yātudhānas, as well as by others of fierce valor and dark (tāmasic) nature,
नानाशस्त्रधरैर्वीरैर्नानाकवचभूषणैः ।
महाबलैर्भीमरवैः संरम्भोद्वृत्तलोचनैः ॥७७॥
77. nānāśastradharairvīrairnānākavacabhūṣaṇaiḥ ,
mahābalairbhīmaravaiḥ saṁrambhodvṛttalocanaiḥ.
77. nānā-śastra-dharaiḥ vīraiḥ nānā-kavaca-bhūṣaṇaiḥ
mahā-balaiḥ bhīma-ravaiḥ saṃrambha-udvṛtta-locanaiḥ
77. (rākṣasaiḥ) nānā-śastra-dharaiḥ vīraiḥ nānā-kavaca-bhūṣaṇaiḥ
mahā-balaiḥ bhīma-ravaiḥ saṃrambha-udvṛtta-locanaiḥ (vṛtam)
77. (These rākṣasas were) holding various weapons, who were valiant, adorned with diverse armors and ornaments, possessing immense strength, making terrifying roars, and whose eyes rolled wildly with rage.
उपस्थितैस्ततो युद्धे राक्षसैर्युद्धदुर्मदैः ।
विषण्णमभिसंप्रेक्ष्य पुत्रं ते द्रौणिरब्रवीत् ॥७८॥
78. upasthitaistato yuddhe rākṣasairyuddhadurmadaiḥ ,
viṣaṇṇamabhisaṁprekṣya putraṁ te drauṇirabravīt.
78. upasthitaiḥ tataḥ yuddhe rākṣasaiḥ yuddhadurmadaiḥ
viṣaṇṇam abhisaṃprekṣya putram te drauṇiḥ abravīt

te putram viṣaṇṇam abhisaṃprekṣya drauṇiḥ abravīt
78. Then, as the battle-frenzied demons (rākṣasa) approached in the war, Droṇi (Aśvatthāman) observed your son to be dejected and spoke to him.
तिष्ठ दुर्योधनाद्य त्वं न कार्यः संभ्रमस्त्वया ।
सहैभिर्भ्रातृभिर्वीरैः पार्थिवैश्चेन्द्रविक्रमैः ॥७९॥
79. tiṣṭha duryodhanādya tvaṁ na kāryaḥ saṁbhramastvayā ,
sahaibhirbhrātṛbhirvīraiḥ pārthivaiścendravikramaiḥ.
79. tiṣṭha duryodhana adya tvam na kāryaḥ saṃbhramaḥ tvayā
saha ebhiḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ vīraiḥ pārthivaiḥ ca indravikramaiḥ
79. duryodhana adya tvam tiṣṭha; tvayā saṃbhramaḥ na kāryaḥ.
ebhiḥ vīraiḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ ca indravikramaiḥ pārthivaiḥ saha (asi).
79. "Stand firm today, Duryodhana! You should not be agitated. You are accompanied by these brave brothers and kings (pārthiva) whose prowess (vikrama) equals that of Indra."
निहनिष्याम्यमित्रांस्ते न तवास्ति पराजयः ।
सत्यं ते प्रतिजानामि पर्याश्वासय वाहिनीम् ॥८०॥
80. nihaniṣyāmyamitrāṁste na tavāsti parājayaḥ ,
satyaṁ te pratijānāmi paryāśvāsaya vāhinīm.
80. nihaniṣyāmi amitrān te na tava asti parājayaḥ
satyam te pratijānāmi paryāśvāsaya vāhinīm
80. (aham) te amitrān nihaniṣyāmi; tava parājayaḥ na asti.

80. "I will surely slay your enemies; there will be no defeat for you. I truly (satya) promise you this. Therefore, reassure your army (vāhinī)."
दुर्योधन उवाच ।
न त्वेतदद्भुतं मन्ये यत्ते महदिदं मनः ।
अस्मासु च परा भक्तिस्तव गौतमिनन्दन ॥८१॥
81. duryodhana uvāca ,
na tvetadadbhutaṁ manye yatte mahadidaṁ manaḥ ,
asmāsu ca parā bhaktistava gautaminandana.

idam manaḥ asmāsu ca parā bhaktiḥ tava gautaminandana

81. Duryodhana said: "I do not consider this amazing, that your mind (manas) is so great, nor your supreme devotion (bhakti) towards us, O son of Gotamī (Gautamīnandana)."
संजय उवाच ।
अश्वत्थामानमुक्त्वैवं ततः सौबलमब्रवीत् ।
वृतः शतसहस्रेण रथानां रणशोभिनाम् ॥८२॥
82. saṁjaya uvāca ,
aśvatthāmānamuktvaivaṁ tataḥ saubalamabravīt ,
vṛtaḥ śatasahasreṇa rathānāṁ raṇaśobhinām.
82. Sañjaya uvāca Aśvatthāmānam uktvā evam tataḥ Saubalam
abravīt vṛtaḥ śatasahasreṇa rathānām raṇaśobhinām

[Saḥ] raṇaśobhinām rathānām śatasahasreṇa vṛtaḥ.
82. Sañjaya said: Having thus addressed Aśvatthāman, he then spoke to the son of Subala (Śakuni). He (the son of Subala) was surrounded by a hundred thousand chariots, glorious in battle.
षष्ट्या गजसहस्रैश्च प्रयाहि त्वं धनंजयम् ।
कर्णश्च वृषसेनश्च कृपो नीलस्तथैव च ॥८३॥
83. ṣaṣṭyā gajasahasraiśca prayāhi tvaṁ dhanaṁjayam ,

जहि मातुल कौन्तेयानसुरानिव पावकिः ॥८८॥

88. O uncle, slay the sons of Kunti (Kaunteyas), whose bodies are severely wounded and torn by the arrows of Drona's son (Drauni), just as Agni's son (Pāvaki) [slays] the Asuras.
एवमुक्तो ययौ शीघ्रं पुत्रेण तव सौबलः ।
पिप्रीषुस्ते सुतान्राजन्दिधक्षुश्चैव पाण्डवान् ॥८९॥
89. evamukto yayau śīghraṁ putreṇa tava saubalaḥ ,

अथ प्रववृते युद्धं द्रौणिराक्षसयोर्मृधे ।
विभावर्यां सुतुमुलं शक्रप्रह्रादयोरिव ॥९०॥
90. atha pravavṛte yuddhaṁ drauṇirākṣasayormṛdhe ,
vibhāvaryāṁ sutumulaṁ śakraprahrādayoriva.

90. Then, a very fierce battle began in the night between Aśvatthāmā (Droṇi) and the Rākṣasa Ghaṭotkaca, just like the one between Indra (Śakra) and Prahlāda.
ततो घटोत्कचो बाणैर्दशभिर्गौतमीसुतम् ।
जघानोरसि संक्रुद्धो विषाग्निप्रतिमैर्दृढैः ॥९१॥
91. tato ghaṭotkaco bāṇairdaśabhirgautamīsutam ,
jaghānorasi saṁkruddho viṣāgnipratimairdṛḍhaiḥ.

91. Then, greatly enraged, Ghaṭotkaca struck the son of Gautamī (Aśvatthāmā) on the chest with ten strong arrows resembling venomous fire.
स तैरभ्याहतो गाढं शरैर्भीमसुतेरितैः ।
चचाल रथमध्यस्थो वातोद्धूत इव द्रुमः ॥९२॥
92. sa tairabhyāhato gāḍhaṁ śarairbhīmasuteritaiḥ ,

92. Severely struck by those arrows discharged by Ghaṭotkaca (the son of Bhīma), he (Aśvatthāmā), standing in the middle of his chariot, trembled like a tree shaken by the wind.
भूयश्चाञ्जलिकेनास्य मार्गणेन महाप्रभम् ।
द्रौणिहस्तस्थितं चापं चिच्छेदाशु घटोत्कचः ॥९३॥
93. bhūyaścāñjalikenāsya mārgaṇena mahāprabham ,
drauṇihastasthitaṁ cāpaṁ cicchedāśu ghaṭotkacaḥ.

93. And again, Ghaṭotkaca quickly severed Droṇi's (Aśvatthāmā's) splendid bow, which was in his hand, with an Añjalika arrow.
ततोऽन्यद्द्रौणिरादाय धनुर्भारसहं महत् ।
ववर्ष विशिखांस्तीक्ष्णान्वारिधारा इवाम्बुदः ॥९४॥
94. tato'nyaddrauṇirādāya dhanurbhārasahaṁ mahat ,
vavarṣa viśikhāṁstīkṣṇānvāridhārā ivāmbudaḥ.

94. Then, Droṇa's son (Drauṇi), taking another huge bow capable of bearing great weight, rained down sharp arrows, just as a cloud (ambuda) pours down torrents of water.
ततः शारद्वतीपुत्रः प्रेषयामास भारत ।
सुवर्णपुङ्खाञ्शत्रुघ्नान्खचरान्खचरान्प्रति ॥९५॥
95. tataḥ śāradvatīputraḥ preṣayāmāsa bhārata ,

95. Then, O descendant of Bharata (Bhārata), the son of Śāradvatī (Kṛpa) dispatched golden-shafted, enemy-slaying arrows that flew through the sky, against those who also moved in the sky.
तद्बाणैरर्दितं यूथं रक्षसां पीनवक्षसाम् ।
सिंहैरिव बभौ मत्तं गजानामाकुलं कुलम् ॥९६॥
96. tadbāṇairarditaṁ yūthaṁ rakṣasāṁ pīnavakṣasām ,
siṁhairiva babhau mattaṁ gajānāmākulaṁ kulam.

96. That host of broad-chested Rakshasas, tormented by those arrows, appeared like a confused and maddened herd of elephants (gajānām) attacked by lions.
विधम्य राक्षसान्बाणैः साश्वसूतरथान्विभुः ।
ददाह भगवान्वह्निर्भूतानीव युगक्षये ॥९७॥
97. vidhamya rākṣasānbāṇaiḥ sāśvasūtarathānvibhuḥ ,
dadāha bhagavānvahnirbhūtānīva yugakṣaye.

97. Having scattered the Rakshasas—along with their horses, charioteers, and chariots—with his arrows, the mighty (Kṛpa) consumed them, just as the venerable fire (vahni) consumes all beings (bhūtāni) at the dissolution of a cosmic age (yugakṣaye).
स दग्ध्वाक्षौहिणीं बाणैर्नैरृतान्रुरुचे भृशम् ।
पुरेव त्रिपुरं दग्ध्वा दिवि देवो महेश्वरः ॥९८॥
98. sa dagdhvākṣauhiṇīṁ bāṇairnairṛtānruruce bhṛśam ,
pureva tripuraṁ dagdhvā divi devo maheśvaraḥ.

98. Having burned an akṣauhiṇī (division of army) of Rākṣasas with his arrows, he shone exceedingly, just as the god Maheśvara (Śiva) shone in heaven after burning the triple city (Tripura) long ago.
युगान्ते सर्वभूतानि दग्ध्वेव वसुरुल्बणः ।
रराज जयतां श्रेष्ठो द्रोणपुत्रस्तवाहितान् ॥९९॥
99. yugānte sarvabhūtāni dagdhveva vasurulbaṇaḥ ,
rarāja jayatāṁ śreṣṭho droṇaputrastavāhitān.

99. The son of Droṇa (Aśvatthāman), foremost among victors, shone gloriously, having burned your enemies, just as the fierce Rudra (vasu ulbaṇa) at the end of a cosmic age (yuga) consumes all beings.
तेषु राजसहस्रेषु पाण्डवेयेषु भारत ।
नैनं निरीक्षितुं कश्चिच्छक्नोति द्रौणिमाहवे ।
ऋते घटोत्कचाद्वीराद्राक्षसेन्द्रान्महाबलात् ॥१००॥
100. teṣu rājasahasreṣu pāṇḍaveyeṣu bhārata ,
nainaṁ nirīkṣituṁ kaścicchaknoti drauṇimāhave ,
ṛte ghaṭotkacādvīrādrākṣasendrānmahābalāt.

100. O Bhārata, among those thousands of kings and Pāṇḍavas, no one was able to look at Droṇi (Aśvatthāman) in battle, except for the mighty hero and lord of Rākṣasas, Ghaṭotkaca.
स पुनर्भरतश्रेष्ठ क्रोधाद्रक्तान्तलोचनः ।
तलं तलेन संहत्य संदश्य दशनच्छदम् ।
स्वसूतमब्रवीत्क्रुद्धो द्रोणपुत्राय मां वह ॥१०१॥
101. sa punarbharataśreṣṭha krodhādraktāntalocanaḥ ,
talaṁ talena saṁhatya saṁdaśya daśanacchadam ,
svasūtamabravītkruddho droṇaputrāya māṁ vaha.

101. O best of Bharatas, then, with the corners of his eyes red from anger, he (Arjuna), enraged, struck his palms together and bit his lip, then said to his own charioteer, "Take me to the son of Droṇa (Aśvatthāman)!"
स ययौ घोररूपेण तेन जैत्रपताकिना ।
द्वैरथं द्रोणपुत्रेण पुनरप्यरिसूदनः ॥१०२॥
102. sa yayau ghorarūpeṇa tena jaitrapatākinā ,
dvairathaṁ droṇaputreṇa punarapyarisūdanaḥ.

102. That slayer of enemies (arisūdana), terrible in form and bearing a victory banner, once again advanced for a chariot-duel with Dronaputra (Droṇaputra).
स चिक्षेप ततः क्रुद्धो द्रोणपुत्राय राक्षसः ।
अष्टचक्रां महारौद्रामशनीं रुद्रनिर्मिताम् ॥१०३॥
103. sa cikṣepa tataḥ kruddho droṇaputrāya rākṣasaḥ ,
aṣṭacakrāṁ mahāraudrāmaśanīṁ rudranirmitām.

103. Then, that enraged demon (rākṣasa) hurled at Dronaputra (Droṇaputra) a thunderbolt, exceedingly dreadful, having eight wheels, and fashioned by Rudra.
तामवप्लुत्य जग्राह द्रौणिर्न्यस्य रथे धनुः ।
चिक्षेप चैनां तस्यैव स्यन्दनात्सोऽवपुप्लुवे ॥१०४॥
104. tāmavaplutya jagrāha drauṇirnyasya rathe dhanuḥ ,
cikṣepa caināṁ tasyaiva syandanātso'vapupluve.

104. Drauni (Drauṇi), having leaped down and set aside his bow on his chariot, seized that (thunderbolt). And when he hurled it back, the other (Ghatotkacha) himself leaped down from his (Ghatotkacha's) chariot.
साश्वसूतध्वजं वाहं भस्म कृत्वा महाप्रभा ।
विवेश वसुधां भित्त्वा साशनिर्भृशदारुणा ॥१०५॥
105. sāśvasūtadhvajaṁ vāhaṁ bhasma kṛtvā mahāprabhā ,
viveśa vasudhāṁ bhittvā sāśanirbhṛśadāruṇā.

105. Having reduced the chariot (vāha) with its horses, charioteer, and banner to ash, that thunderbolt (aśani), of great power and exceedingly dreadful, pierced the earth and entered it.
द्रौणेस्तत्कर्म दृष्ट्वा तु सर्वभूतान्यपूजयन् ।
यदवप्लुत्य जग्राह घोरां शंकरनिर्मिताम् ॥१०६॥
106. drauṇestatkarma dṛṣṭvā tu sarvabhūtānyapūjayan ,
yadavaplutya jagrāha ghorāṁ śaṁkaranirmitām.

106. Seeing that deed of Drona's son (Aśvatthāmā), all beings honored him, for he had leaped down and seized the terrible weapon created by Śaṅkara.
धृष्टद्युम्नरथं गत्वा भैमसेनिस्ततो नृप ।
मुमोच निशितान्बाणान्पुनर्द्रौणेर्महोरसि ॥१०७॥
107. dhṛṣṭadyumnarathaṁ gatvā bhaimasenistato nṛpa ,
mumoca niśitānbāṇānpunardrauṇermahorasi.

107. O king, after that, Bhīmasena's son (Bhīma) went to Dhṛṣṭadyumna's chariot and released sharp arrows once more onto Drauṇi's broad chest.
धृष्टद्युम्नोऽप्यसंभ्रान्तो मुमोचाशीविषोपमान् ।
सुवर्णपुङ्खान्विशिखान्द्रोणपुत्रस्य वक्षसि ॥१०८॥
108. dhṛṣṭadyumno'pyasaṁbhrānto mumocāśīviṣopamān ,
suvarṇapuṅkhānviśikhāndroṇaputrasya vakṣasi.

108. Dhṛṣṭadyumna, for his part, remained undismayed and released golden-feathered arrows, like venomous snakes, onto Drona's son's (Aśvatthāmā's) chest.
ततो मुमोच नाराचान्द्रौणिस्ताभ्यां सहस्रशः ।
तावप्यग्निशिखाप्रख्यैर्जघ्नतुस्तस्य मार्गणान् ॥१०९॥
109. tato mumoca nārācāndrauṇistābhyāṁ sahasraśaḥ ,
tāvapyagniśikhāprakhyairjaghnatustasya mārgaṇān.

109. Then Drauṇi released thousands of iron arrows at those two warriors. In response, those two also struck down his arrows with their own, which resembled flames of fire.
अतितीव्रमभूद्युद्धं तयोः पुरुषसिंहयोः ।

110. atitīvramabhūdyuddhaṁ tayoḥ puruṣasiṁhayoḥ ,

110. O best among the Bhāratas, a terribly fierce battle occurred between those two lion-like men, which generated great joy for the warriors and for Droṇi (Drauṇi).
ततो रथसहस्रेण द्विरदानां शतैस्त्रिभिः ।
षड्भिर्वाजिसहस्रैश्च भीमस्तं देशमाव्रजत् ॥१११॥
111. tato rathasahasreṇa dviradānāṁ śataistribhiḥ ,
ṣaḍbhirvājisahasraiśca bhīmastaṁ deśamāvrajat.

111. Then, Bhīma advanced towards that region (deśa) with a thousand chariots, three hundred elephants, and six thousand horses.

112. Then, Droṇi (Drauṇi), whose soul was righteous (dharma) and who performed unwearied deeds, fought against Bhīma's son, the rākṣasa, and Dhṛṣṭadyumna along with his followers.
तत्राद्भुततमं द्रौणिर्दर्शयामास विक्रमम् ।
अशक्यं कर्तुमन्येन सर्वभूतेषु भारत ॥११३॥
113. tatrādbhutatamaṁ drauṇirdarśayāmāsa vikramam ,

113. There, Droṇi (Drauṇi) displayed the most extraordinary valor, a feat that would be impossible for any other being (bhūta) to accomplish, O Bhārata.
निमेषान्तरमात्रेण साश्वसूतरथद्विपाम् ।
अक्षौहिणीं राक्षसानां शितैर्बाणैरशातयत् ॥११४॥
114. nimeṣāntaramātreṇa sāśvasūtarathadvipām ,
akṣauhiṇīṁ rākṣasānāṁ śitairbāṇairaśātayat.

114. In merely the space of a moment, he slaughtered an akṣauhiṇī (army division) of demons—including their horses, charioteers, chariots, and elephants—with sharp arrows.
मिषतो भीमसेनस्य हैडिम्बेः पार्षतस्य च ।
यमयोर्धर्मपुत्रस्य विजयस्याच्युतस्य च ॥११५॥

115. While Bhīmasena, Hiḍimbā's son, Pṛṣata's son, the twins, the son of Dharma (Yudhiṣṭhira), Vijaya (Arjuna), and Acyuta (Kṛṣṇa) looked on.
प्रगाढमञ्जोगतिभिर्नाराचैरभिताडिताः ।
निपेतुर्द्विरदा भूमौ द्विशृङ्गा इव पर्वताः ॥११६॥
116. pragāḍhamañjogatibhirnārācairabhitāḍitāḥ ,
nipeturdviradā bhūmau dviśṛṅgā iva parvatāḥ.

116. Struck by intensely powerful, swiftly-moving iron arrows, the elephants fell to the ground like mountains with two peaks.
निकृत्तैर्हस्तिहस्तैश्च विचलद्भिरितस्ततः ।
रराज वसुधा कीर्णा विसर्पद्भिरिवोरगैः ॥११७॥

117. The earth, strewn with severed elephant trunks wriggling here and there, shone as if (it were covered) with crawling snakes.
क्षिप्तैः काञ्चनदण्डैश्च नृपच्छत्रैः क्षितिर्बभौ ।
द्यौरिवोदितचन्द्रार्का ग्रहाकीर्णा युगक्षये ॥११८॥

118. The earth shone brilliantly with scattered golden staffs and royal umbrellas, resembling the sky at the dissolution of an age (yugakṣaya), when it is filled with the rising sun and moon and numerous celestial bodies (grahas).
प्रवृद्धध्वजमण्डूकां भेरीविस्तीर्णकच्छपाम् ।
छत्रहंसावलीजुष्टां फेनचामरमालिनीम् ॥११९॥
119. pravṛddhadhvajamaṇḍūkāṁ bherīvistīrṇakacchapām ,
chatrahaṁsāvalījuṣṭāṁ phenacāmaramālinīm.

119. It was characterized by abundant banners resembling frogs, its large drums were like expansive tortoises, it was adorned with rows of umbrellas that seemed like swans, and it was garlanded with whisks of foam.
कङ्कगृध्रमहाग्राहां नैकायुधझषाकुलाम् ।
रथक्षिप्तमहावप्रां पताकारुचिरद्रुमाम् ॥१२०॥
120. kaṅkagṛdhramahāgrāhāṁ naikāyudhajhaṣākulām ,
rathakṣiptamahāvaprāṁ patākāruciradrumām.

120. It was characterized by herons and vultures acting like great crocodiles, teeming with various weapons resembling fish, having its massive banks churned up by chariots, and adorned with banners that stood like beautiful trees.
शरमीनां महारौद्रां प्रासशक्त्युग्रडुण्डुभाम् ।
मज्जामांसमहापङ्कां कबन्धावर्जितोडुपाम् ॥१२१॥
121. śaramīnāṁ mahāraudrāṁ prāsaśaktyugraḍuṇḍubhām ,
majjāmāṁsamahāpaṅkāṁ kabandhāvarjitoḍupām.

121. It was exceedingly fierce, with arrows acting as fish, spears and javelins like terrible water-snakes, its great mud formed by marrow and flesh, and headless trunks serving as overturned boats.
केशशैवलकल्माषां भीरूणां कश्मलावहाम् ।
नागेन्द्रहययोधानां शरीरव्ययसंभवाम् ॥१२२॥
122. keśaśaivalakalmāṣāṁ bhīrūṇāṁ kaśmalāvahām ,
nāgendrahayayodhānāṁ śarīravyayasaṁbhavām.

122. This river, stained with hair like moss, brings distress to the fearful, and arises from the destruction of the bodies of great elephants, horses, and warriors.
शोणितौघमहावेगां द्रौणिः प्रावर्तयन्नदीम् ।
योधार्तरवनिर्घोषां क्षतजोर्मिसमाकुलाम् ॥१२३॥
123. śoṇitaughamahāvegāṁ drauṇiḥ prāvartayannadīm ,
yodhārtaravanirghoṣāṁ kṣatajormisamākulām.

123. Droṇi (Drauṇiḥ) caused a river to flow, which had a mighty current of blood, whose roar was the lamentations of suffering warriors, and which was agitated by waves of gore (kṣataja).

124. Droṇi (Drauṇiḥ) advanced towards (what was like) a very terrible, great ocean, the abode of Yama (Yamakṣaya). Having slain the Rākṣasas with arrows, he then afflicted the son of Hiḍimbā (Haiḍimbam).
पुनरप्यतिसंक्रुद्धः सवृकोदरपार्षतान् ।
स नाराचगणैः पार्थान्द्रौणिर्विद्ध्वा महाबलः ॥१२५॥
125. punarapyatisaṁkruddhaḥ savṛkodarapārṣatān ,
sa nārācagaṇaiḥ pārthāndrauṇirviddhvā mahābalaḥ.

जघान सुरथं नाम द्रुपदस्य सुतं विभुः ।
पुनः श्रुतंजयं नाम सुरथस्यानुजं रणे ॥१२६॥
126. jaghāna surathaṁ nāma drupadasya sutaṁ vibhuḥ ,
punaḥ śrutaṁjayaṁ nāma surathasyānujaṁ raṇe.

126. The mighty one killed Suratha, the son of Drupada, by name; and then, in battle, he killed Śrutaṃjaya by name, Suratha's younger brother.
बलानीकं जयानीकं जयाश्वं चाभिजघ्निवान् ।
श्रुताह्वयं च राजेन्द्र द्रौणिर्निन्ये यमक्षयम् ॥१२७॥
127. balānīkaṁ jayānīkaṁ jayāśvaṁ cābhijaghnivān ,
śrutāhvayaṁ ca rājendra drauṇirninye yamakṣayam.

127. O king, Droṇi (Aśvatthāman) killed Balānīka, Jayānīka, and Jayāśva, and he also sent Śrutāhvaya to the abode of Yama.
त्रिभिश्चान्यैः शरैस्तीक्ष्णैः सुपुङ्खै रुक्ममालिनम् ।
शत्रुंजयं च बलिनं शक्रलोकं निनाय ह ॥१२८॥
128. tribhiścānyaiḥ śaraistīkṣṇaiḥ supuṅkhai rukmamālinam ,
śatruṁjayaṁ ca balinaṁ śakralokaṁ nināya ha.

128. And with three other sharp, well-feathered arrows, he indeed sent the mighty Śatruṃjaya, who was adorned with gold, to Indra's heaven.
जघान स पृषध्रं च चन्द्रदेवं च मानिनम् ।
कुन्तिभोजसुतांश्चाजौ दशभिर्दश जघ्निवान् ॥१२९॥
129. jaghāna sa pṛṣadhraṁ ca candradevaṁ ca māninam ,
kuntibhojasutāṁścājau daśabhirdaśa jaghnivān.

129. He killed Pṛṣadhra and the proud Candradeva; and in battle, he struck down all ten of Kuntibhoja's sons.
अश्वत्थामा सुसंक्रुद्धः संधायोग्रमजिह्मगम् ।
मुमोचाकर्णपूर्णेन धनुषा शरमुत्तमम् ।
यमदण्डोपमं घोरमुद्दिश्याशु घटोत्कचम् ॥१३०॥
130. aśvatthāmā susaṁkruddhaḥ saṁdhāyogramajihmagam ,
mumocākarṇapūrṇena dhanuṣā śaramuttamam ,
yamadaṇḍopamaṁ ghoramuddiśyāśu ghaṭotkacam.

130. Greatly enraged, Ashwatthama, aiming swiftly at Ghatotkacha, released a fierce, straight-flying, excellent, and terrible arrow, resembling Yama's mace, having drawn his bowstring fully to his ear.
स भित्त्वा हृदयं तस्य राक्षसस्य महाशरः ।
विवेश वसुधां शीघ्रं सपुङ्खः पृथिवीपते ॥१३१॥
131. sa bhittvā hṛdayaṁ tasya rākṣasasya mahāśaraḥ ,
viveśa vasudhāṁ śīghraṁ sapuṅkhaḥ pṛthivīpate.

131. O lord of the earth, that great arrow, having pierced the heart of that demon, swiftly entered the ground, fletching and all.
तं हतं पतितं ज्ञात्वा धृष्टद्युम्नो महारथः ।
द्रौणेः सकाशाद्राजेन्द्र अपनिन्ये रथान्तरम् ॥१३२॥
132. taṁ hataṁ patitaṁ jñātvā dhṛṣṭadyumno mahārathaḥ ,
drauṇeḥ sakāśādrājendra apaninye rathāntaram.

132. O chief of kings, Dhrishtadyumna, the great chariot-fighter, realizing that he (Ghatotkacha) had been slain and had fallen, withdrew his chariot from the vicinity of Drona.
तथा पराङ्मुखरथं सैन्यं यौधिष्ठिरं नृप ।
पराजित्य रणे वीरो द्रोणपुत्रो ननाद ह ।
पूजितः सर्वभूतैश्च तव पुत्रैश्च भारत ॥१३३॥
133. tathā parāṅmukharathaṁ sainyaṁ yaudhiṣṭhiraṁ nṛpa ,
parājitya raṇe vīro droṇaputro nanāda ha ,
pūjitaḥ sarvabhūtaiśca tava putraiśca bhārata.

133. O king, O descendant of Bharata, then, having defeated Yudhisthira's army, whose chariots had turned away in retreat, the heroic son of Drona (Ashwatthama) roared on the battlefield, honored by all creatures and by your own sons.
अथ शरशतभिन्नकृत्तदेहैर्हतपतितैः क्षणदाचरैः समन्तात् ।
निधनमुपगतैर्मही कृताभूद्गिरिशिखरैरिव दुर्गमातिरौद्रा ॥१३४॥
134. atha śaraśatabhinnakṛttadehai;rhatapatitaiḥ kṣaṇadācaraiḥ samantāt ,
nidhanamupagatairmahī kṛtābhū;dgiriśikharairiva durgamātiraudrā.

134. Then, the earth became exceedingly dreadful and impassable, as if covered by mountain peaks, due to the night-wanderers (rākṣasas) who had been slain and fallen, their bodies pierced and cut by hundreds of arrows, having met their end all around.
तं सिद्धगन्धर्वपिशाचसंघा नागाः सुपर्णाः पितरो वयांसि ।
रक्षोगणा भूतगणाश्च द्रौणिमपूजयन्नप्सरसः सुराश्च ॥१३५॥
135. taṁ siddhagandharvapiśācasaṁghā; nāgāḥ suparṇāḥ pitaro vayāṁsi ,
rakṣogaṇā bhūtagaṇāśca drauṇi;mapūjayannapsarasaḥ surāśca.

135. The hosts of Siddhas, Gandharvas, and Piśācas, along with the Nāgas, Suparṇas, Pitṛs (ancestors), birds, hosts of Rākṣasas, hosts of Bhūtas (spirits), Apsarases (celestial nymphs), and Suras (gods) all worshipped him, Drauṇi.
