जनमेजय उवाच ।
वसिष्ठस्यापवाहो वै भीमवेगः कथं नु सः ।
किमर्थं च सरिच्छ्रेष्ठा तमृषिं प्रत्यवाहयत् ॥१॥
1. janamejaya uvāca ,
vasiṣṭhasyāpavāho vai bhīmavegaḥ kathaṁ nu saḥ ,
kimarthaṁ ca saricchreṣṭhā tamṛṣiṁ pratyavāhayat.

sarit-śreṣṭhā kim-artham tam ṛṣim prati-avavāhayat?
1. Janamejaya said: "How, indeed, was Vasiṣṭha's carrier of such dreadful speed? And for what purpose did the best of rivers carry away that sage?"
केन चास्याभवद्वैरं कारणं किं च तत्प्रभो ।
शंस पृष्टो महाप्राज्ञ न हि तृप्यामि कथ्यताम् ॥२॥
2. kena cāsyābhavadvairaṁ kāraṇaṁ kiṁ ca tatprabho ,
śaṁsa pṛṣṭo mahāprājña na hi tṛpyāmi kathyatām.
2. kena ca asya abhavat vairam kāraṇam kim ca tat prabho
śaṃsa pṛṣṭaḥ mahāprājña na hi tṛpyāmi kathyatām
2. O Lord, by whom did enmity arise for him, and what was its cause? Please tell me, O greatly wise one, for I am not satisfied; let it be recounted.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
विश्वामित्रस्य चैवर्षेर्वसिष्ठस्य च भारत ।
भृशं वैरमभूद्राजंस्तपःस्पर्धाकृतं महत् ॥३॥
3. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
viśvāmitrasya caivarṣervasiṣṭhasya ca bhārata ,
bhṛśaṁ vairamabhūdrājaṁstapaḥspardhākṛtaṁ mahat.
3. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca viśvāmitrasya ca eva ṛṣeḥ vasiṣṭhasya ca
bhārata bhṛśam vairam abhūt rājan tapaḥspardhākṛtam mahat
3. Vaiśampāyana said: 'O descendant of Bharata (bhārata), O King, indeed, a great enmity arose between the sage Viśvāmitra and Vasiṣṭha, caused by rivalry in their ascetic practices (tapas).'
आश्रमो वै वसिष्ठस्य स्थाणुतीर्थेऽभवन्महान् ।
पूर्वतः पश्चिमश्चासीद्विश्वामित्रस्य धीमतः ॥४॥
4. āśramo vai vasiṣṭhasya sthāṇutīrthe'bhavanmahān ,
pūrvataḥ paścimaścāsīdviśvāmitrasya dhīmataḥ.

pūrvataḥ paścimaḥ ca āsīt viśvāmitrasya dhīmataḥ
4. Indeed, Vasiṣṭha's great hermitage (āśrama) was situated at Sthāṇutīrtha. To its east and west was the hermitage (āśrama) of the wise Viśvāmitra.
यत्र स्थाणुर्महाराज तप्तवान्सुमहत्तपः ।
यत्रास्य कर्म तद्घोरं प्रवदन्ति मनीषिणः ॥५॥
5. yatra sthāṇurmahārāja taptavānsumahattapaḥ ,
yatrāsya karma tadghoraṁ pravadanti manīṣiṇaḥ.

yatra asya karma tat ghoram pravadanti manīṣiṇaḥ
5. O great king, it was at that very spot that Sthāṇu (Śiva) performed exceedingly great asceticism (tapas). There, the wise ones (manīṣiṇaḥ) declare, his terrible act (karma) occurred.
यत्रेष्ट्वा भगवान्स्थाणुः पूजयित्वा सरस्वतीम् ।
स्थापयामास तत्तीर्थं स्थाणुतीर्थमिति प्रभो ॥६॥
6. yatreṣṭvā bhagavānsthāṇuḥ pūjayitvā sarasvatīm ,
sthāpayāmāsa tattīrthaṁ sthāṇutīrthamiti prabho.
6. yatra iṣṭvā bhagavān sthāṇuḥ pūjayitvā sarasvatīm
sthāpayāmāsa tat tīrtham sthāṇutīrtham iti prabho
6. prabho yatra bhagavān sthāṇuḥ iṣṭvā sarasvatīm
pūjayitvā tat sthāṇutīrtham iti tīrtham sthāpayāmāsa
6. O Lord, it was there that the divine Sthāṇu (Śiva), having performed a sacrifice and worshipped Sarasvatī, established that holy place (tīrtha) known as Sthāṇutīrtha.
तत्र सर्वे सुराः स्कन्दमभ्यषिञ्चन्नराधिप ।
सेनापत्येन महता सुरारिविनिबर्हणम् ॥७॥
7. tatra sarve surāḥ skandamabhyaṣiñcannarādhipa ,
senāpatyena mahatā surārivinibarhaṇam.

narādhipa senāpatyena mahatā surārivinibarhaṇam

7. There, O King, all the gods consecrated Skanda to the great generalship (senāpatya), as he was the vanquisher of the enemies of the gods.
तस्मिन्सरस्वतीतीर्थे विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
वसिष्ठं चालयामास तपसोग्रेण तच्छृणु ॥८॥
8. tasminsarasvatītīrthe viśvāmitro mahāmuniḥ ,
vasiṣṭhaṁ cālayāmāsa tapasogreṇa tacchṛṇu.
8. tasmin sarasvatītīrthe viśvāmitraḥ mahāmuniḥ
vasiṣṭham cālayāmāsa tapasā ugreṇa tat śṛṇu
8. tasmin sarasvatītīrthe mahāmuniḥ viśvāmitraḥ

8. In that holy place (tīrtha) of Sarasvatī, the great sage (mahāmuni) Viśvāmitra caused Vasiṣṭha to waver from his position through his fierce asceticism (tapas). Listen to that account!
विश्वामित्रवसिष्ठौ तावहन्यहनि भारत ।
स्पर्धां तपःकृतां तीव्रां चक्रतुस्तौ तपोधनौ ॥९॥
9. viśvāmitravasiṣṭhau tāvahanyahani bhārata ,
spardhāṁ tapaḥkṛtāṁ tīvrāṁ cakratustau tapodhanau.

9. O Bhārata, those two, Viśvāmitra and Vasiṣṭha, who considered asceticism (tapas) their sole wealth (tapodhana), engaged daily in an intense rivalry (spardhā) stemming from their ascetic practices.
तत्राप्यधिकसंतापो विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
दृष्ट्वा तेजो वसिष्ठस्य चिन्तामभिजगाम ह ।
तस्य बुद्धिरियं ह्यासीद्धर्मनित्यस्य भारत ॥१०॥
10. tatrāpyadhikasaṁtāpo viśvāmitro mahāmuniḥ ,
dṛṣṭvā tejo vasiṣṭhasya cintāmabhijagāma ha ,
tasya buddhiriyaṁ hyāsīddharmanityasya bhārata.
इयं सरस्वती तूर्णं मत्समीपं तपोधनम् ।
आनयिष्यति वेगेन वसिष्ठं जपतां वरम् ।
इहागतं द्विजश्रेष्ठं हनिष्यामि न संशयः ॥११॥
11. iyaṁ sarasvatī tūrṇaṁ matsamīpaṁ tapodhanam ,
ānayiṣyati vegena vasiṣṭhaṁ japatāṁ varam ,
ihāgataṁ dvijaśreṣṭhaṁ haniṣyāmi na saṁśayaḥ.
एवं निश्चित्य भगवान्विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
सस्मार सरितां श्रेष्ठां क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनः ॥१२॥
12. evaṁ niścitya bhagavānviśvāmitro mahāmuniḥ ,
sasmāra saritāṁ śreṣṭhāṁ krodhasaṁraktalocanaḥ.
सा ध्याता मुनिना तेन व्याकुलत्वं जगाम ह ।
जज्ञे चैनं महावीर्यं महाकोपं च भामिनी ॥१३॥
13. sā dhyātā muninā tena vyākulatvaṁ jagāma ha ,
jajñe cainaṁ mahāvīryaṁ mahākopaṁ ca bhāminī.
तत एनं वेपमाना विवर्णा प्राञ्जलिस्तदा ।
उपतस्थे मुनिवरं विश्वामित्रं सरस्वती ॥१४॥
14. tata enaṁ vepamānā vivarṇā prāñjalistadā ,
upatasthe munivaraṁ viśvāmitraṁ sarasvatī.
14. tataḥ enam vepamānā vivarṇā prāñjaliḥ tadā
upatasthe munivaram viśvāmitram sarasvatī
14. sarasvatī tadā vepamānā vivarṇā prāñjaliḥ

14. Then, trembling and pale, with folded hands, Sarasvatī approached the most excellent sage, Viśvāmitra.
हतवीरा यथा नारी साभवद्दुःखिता भृशम् ।
ब्रूहि किं करवाणीति प्रोवाच मुनिसत्तमम् ॥१५॥
15. hatavīrā yathā nārī sābhavadduḥkhitā bhṛśam ,
brūhi kiṁ karavāṇīti provāca munisattamam.
15. hatavīrā yathā nārī sā abhavat duḥkhitā bhṛśam
brūhi kim karavāṇi iti provāca munisattamam
15. sā hatavīrā nārī yathā,
bhṛśam duḥkhitā abhavat.
brūhi kim karavāṇi iti munisattamam provāca.
15. Like a woman whose valiant ones have been slain, she became exceedingly distressed. She then said to the most excellent sage, "Tell me, what should I do?"
तामुवाच मुनिः क्रुद्धो वसिष्ठं शीघ्रमानय ।
यावदेनं निहन्म्यद्य तच्छ्रुत्वा व्यथिता नदी ॥१६॥
16. tāmuvāca muniḥ kruddho vasiṣṭhaṁ śīghramānaya ,
yāvadenaṁ nihanmyadya tacchrutvā vyathitā nadī.
16. tām uvāca muniḥ kruddhaḥ vasiṣṭham śīghram ānaya
yāvat enam nihanmi adya tat śrutvā vyathitā nadī
16. kruddhaḥ muniḥ tām uvāca,
"vasiṣṭham śīghram ānaya,
yāvat adya enam nihanmi.
" tat śrutvā nadī vyathitā.
16. The angry sage said to her, "Bring Vasiṣṭha quickly, so that I may kill him now!" Hearing that, the river became distressed.
साञ्जलिं तु ततः कृत्वा पुण्डरीकनिभेक्षणा ।
विव्यथे सुविरूढेव लता वायुसमीरिता ॥१७॥
17. sāñjaliṁ tu tataḥ kṛtvā puṇḍarīkanibhekṣaṇā ,
vivyathe suvirūḍheva latā vāyusamīritā.
17. sāñjalim tu tataḥ kṛtvā puṇḍarīkanibhekṣaṇā
vivyathe suvirūḍhā iva latā vāyusamīritā
17. tataḥ tu puṇḍarīkanibhekṣaṇā sāñjalim kṛtvā,
vāyusamīritā suvirūḍhā latā iva,
vivyathe.
17. Then, having made her hands into a respectful gesture (añjali) and with lotus-like eyes, she became distressed, like a well-rooted creeper shaken by the wind.
तथागतां तु तां दृष्ट्वा वेपमानां कृताञ्जलिम् ।
विश्वामित्रोऽब्रवीत्क्रुद्धो वसिष्ठं शीघ्रमानय ॥१८॥
18. tathāgatāṁ tu tāṁ dṛṣṭvā vepamānāṁ kṛtāñjalim ,
viśvāmitro'bravītkruddho vasiṣṭhaṁ śīghramānaya.
18. tathāgatām tu tām dṛṣṭvā vepamānām kṛtāñjalim
viśvāmitraḥ abravīt kruddhaḥ vasiṣṭham śīghram ānaya
18. kruddhaḥ viśvāmitraḥ tathāgatām vepamānām kṛtāñjalim
tām dṛṣṭvā tu abravīt vasiṣṭham śīghram ānaya
18. Seeing her, who had arrived in that manner, trembling and with folded hands, Viśvāmitra, enraged, said, "Bring Vasiṣṭha quickly!"
ततो भीता सरिच्छ्रेष्ठा चिन्तयामास भारत ।
उभयोः शापयोर्भीता कथमेतद्भविष्यति ॥१९॥
19. tato bhītā saricchreṣṭhā cintayāmāsa bhārata ,
ubhayoḥ śāpayorbhītā kathametadbhaviṣyati.
19. tataḥ bhītā saricchreṣṭhā cintayāmāsa bhārata
ubhayoḥ śāpayoḥ bhītā katham etat bhaviṣyati
19. bhārata tataḥ bhītā saricchreṣṭhā cintayāmāsa
ubhayoḥ śāpayoḥ bhītā katham etat bhaviṣyati
19. O Bhārata, then the best of rivers, terrified, pondered, "How will this come to pass, fearful as I am of both curses?"
साभिगम्य वसिष्ठं तु इममर्थमचोदयत् ।
यदुक्ता सरितां श्रेष्ठा विश्वामित्रेण धीमता ॥२०॥
20. sābhigamya vasiṣṭhaṁ tu imamarthamacodayat ,
yaduktā saritāṁ śreṣṭhā viśvāmitreṇa dhīmatā.
20. sā abhigamya vasiṣṭham tu imam artham acodayat
yat uktā saritām śreṣṭhā viśvāmitreṇa dhīmatā
20. sā tu vasiṣṭham abhigamya imam artham acodayat
yat dhīmatā viśvāmitreṇa saritām śreṣṭhā uktā
20. And she, the best of rivers, having approached Vasiṣṭha, implored him regarding this matter, that which had been spoken by the intelligent Viśvāmitra.
उभयोः शापयोर्भीता वेपमाना पुनः पुनः ।
चिन्तयित्वा महाशापमृषिवित्रासिता भृशम् ॥२१॥
21. ubhayoḥ śāpayorbhītā vepamānā punaḥ punaḥ ,
cintayitvā mahāśāpamṛṣivitrāsitā bhṛśam.
21. ubhayoḥ śāpayoḥ bhītā vepamānā punaḥ punaḥ
cintayitvā mahāśāpam ṛṣivitrāsitā bhṛśam
21. ubhayoḥ śāpayoḥ bhītā punaḥ punaḥ vepamānā
mahāśāpam cintayitvā ṛṣivitrāsitā bhṛśam
21. Terrified by both curses and repeatedly trembling, she, having contemplated the severe curse, was extremely frightened by the sage.
तां कृशां च विवर्णां च दृष्ट्वा चिन्तासमन्विताम् ।
उवाच राजन्धर्मात्मा वसिष्ठो द्विपदां वरः ॥२२॥
22. tāṁ kṛśāṁ ca vivarṇāṁ ca dṛṣṭvā cintāsamanvitām ,
uvāca rājandharmātmā vasiṣṭho dvipadāṁ varaḥ.
22. tām kṛśām ca vivarṇām ca dṛṣṭvā cintāsamannvitām
uvāca rājan dharmātmā vasiṣṭhaḥ dvipadām varaḥ
22. rājan dharmātmā dvipadām varaḥ vasiṣṭhaḥ tām
kṛśām ca vivarṇām ca cintāsamannvitām dṛṣṭvā uvāca
22. O king, Vasiṣṭha, who possessed a righteous character (dharma) and was the best among humans, seeing her emaciated, pale, and filled with worry, spoke.
त्राह्यात्मानं सरिच्छ्रेष्ठे वह मां शीघ्रगामिनी ।
विश्वामित्रः शपेद्धि त्वां मा कृथास्त्वं विचारणाम् ॥२३॥
23. trāhyātmānaṁ saricchreṣṭhe vaha māṁ śīghragāminī ,
viśvāmitraḥ śapeddhi tvāṁ mā kṛthāstvaṁ vicāraṇām.
23. trāhi ātmānam saricchreṣṭhe vaha mām śīghragāmini
viśvāmitraḥ śapet hi tvām mā kṛthāḥ tvam vicāraṇām
23. saricchreṣṭhe śīghragāmini ātmānam trāhi mām vaha
hi viśvāmitraḥ tvām śapet tvam vicāraṇām mā kṛthāḥ
23. O best of rivers, O swiftly flowing one, protect yourself (ātman) and carry me! For Viśvāmitra will certainly curse you. Do not hesitate or deliberate.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा कृपाशीलस्य सा सरित् ।
चिन्तयामास कौरव्य किं कृतं सुकृतं भवेत् ॥२४॥
24. tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā kṛpāśīlasya sā sarit ,
cintayāmāsa kauravya kiṁ kṛtaṁ sukṛtaṁ bhavet.
24. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā kṛpāśīlasya sā sarit
cintayāmāsa kauravya kim kṛtam sukṛtam bhavet
24. kauravya sā sarit kṛpāśīlasya tasya tat vacanam
śrutvā cintayāmāsa kim kṛtam sukṛtam bhavet
24. O Kauravya, hearing those words of the compassionate Vasiṣṭha, that river pondered, "What merit (sukṛta) might be achieved?"
तस्याश्चिन्ता समुत्पन्ना वसिष्ठो मय्यतीव हि ।
कृतवान्हि दयां नित्यं तस्य कार्यं हितं मया ॥२५॥
25. tasyāścintā samutpannā vasiṣṭho mayyatīva hi ,
kṛtavānhi dayāṁ nityaṁ tasya kāryaṁ hitaṁ mayā.
25. tasyāḥ cintā samutpannā vasiṣṭhaḥ mayi atīva hi
kṛtavān hi dayām nityam tasya kāryam hitam mayā
25. tasyāḥ cintā samutpannā vasiṣṭhaḥ mayi atīva
nityam dayām hi kṛtavān tasya hitam kāryam mayā
25. A thought arose in her: "Vasiṣṭha has indeed always shown me great kindness. Therefore, that which is beneficial for him must be accomplished by me."
अथ कूले स्वके राजञ्जपन्तमृषिसत्तमम् ।
जुह्वानं कौशिकं प्रेक्ष्य सरस्वत्यभ्यचिन्तयत् ॥२६॥
26. atha kūle svake rājañjapantamṛṣisattamam ,
juhvānaṁ kauśikaṁ prekṣya sarasvatyabhyacintayat.
26. atha kūle svake rājan japantam ṛṣisattamam
juhvānam kauśikam prekṣya sarasvatī abhyacintayat
26. rājan atha sarasvatī svake kūle japantam juhvānam
kauśikam ṛṣisattamam prekṣya abhyacintayat
26. Now, O king, Sarasvatī saw Viśvāmitra, the foremost among sages, on her own bank, performing japa and offering oblations. Having seen him, she began to ponder.
इदमन्तरमित्येव ततः सा सरितां वरा ।
कूलापहारमकरोत्स्वेन वेगेन सा सरित् ॥२७॥
27. idamantaramityeva tataḥ sā saritāṁ varā ,
kūlāpahāramakarotsvena vegena sā sarit.
27. idam antaram iti eva tataḥ sā saritām varā
kūla-apahāram akarot svena vegena sā sarit
27. tataḥ sā saritām varā "idam antaram iti eva" [iti
cintayitvā] sā sarit svena vegena kūla-apahāram akarot
27. "This is the opportune moment," thinking this, that best of rivers (Sarasvatī) then, with her own powerful current, caused the bank to be swept away.
तेन कूलापहारेण मैत्रावरुणिरौह्यत ।
उह्यमानश्च तुष्टाव तदा राजन्सरस्वतीम् ॥२८॥
28. tena kūlāpahāreṇa maitrāvaruṇirauhyata ,
uhyamānaśca tuṣṭāva tadā rājansarasvatīm.
28. tena kūla-apahāreṇa maitrāvaruṇiḥ auhyata
uhyamānaḥ ca tuṣṭāva tadā rājan sarasvatīm
28. rājan tadā tena kūla-apahāreṇa maitrāvaruṇiḥ
auhyata ca uhyamānaḥ sarasvatīm tuṣṭāva
28. By that sweeping away of the bank, Maitrāvaruṇi (Vasiṣṭha) was carried off. And as he was being carried away, O king, he then praised Sarasvatī.
पितामहस्य सरसः प्रवृत्तासि सरस्वति ।
व्याप्तं चेदं जगत्सर्वं तवैवाम्भोभिरुत्तमैः ॥२९॥
29. pitāmahasya sarasaḥ pravṛttāsi sarasvati ,
vyāptaṁ cedaṁ jagatsarvaṁ tavaivāmbhobhiruttamaiḥ.
29. pitāmahasya sarasaḥ pravṛttā asi sarasvati vyāptam
ca idam jagat sarvam tava eva ambhobhiḥ uttamaiḥ
29. sarasvati tvam pitāmahasya sarasaḥ pravṛttā asi ca idam
sarvam jagat tava eva uttamaiḥ ambhobhiḥ vyāptam [asti]
29. "O Sarasvatī, you have emerged from the lake of the Grandfather (Brahmā). Indeed, this entire universe is pervaded solely by your excellent waters."
त्वमेवाकाशगा देवि मेघेषूत्सृजसे पयः ।
सर्वाश्चापस्त्वमेवेति त्वत्तो वयमधीमहे ॥३०॥
30. tvamevākāśagā devi megheṣūtsṛjase payaḥ ,
sarvāścāpastvameveti tvatto vayamadhīmahe.
30. tvam eva ākāśagā devi megheṣu utsṛjase payaḥ
sarvāḥ ca apaḥ tvam eva iti tvattaḥ vayam adhīmahe
30. devi tvam eva ākāśagā megheṣu payaḥ utsṛjase ca
sarvāḥ apaḥ tvam eva iti vayam tvattaḥ adhīmahe
30. O Goddess, you alone move through the sky and release water into the clouds. Indeed, all waters are you; thus, we comprehend this from you.
पुष्टिर्द्युतिस्तथा कीर्तिः सिद्धिर्वृद्धिरुमा तथा ।
त्वमेव वाणी स्वाहा त्वं त्वय्यायत्तमिदं जगत् ।
त्वमेव सर्वभूतेषु वससीह चतुर्विधा ॥३१॥
31. puṣṭirdyutistathā kīrtiḥ siddhirvṛddhirumā tathā ,
tvameva vāṇī svāhā tvaṁ tvayyāyattamidaṁ jagat ,
tvameva sarvabhūteṣu vasasīha caturvidhā.
31. puṣṭiḥ dyutiḥ tathā kīrtiḥ siddhiḥ
vṛddhiḥ umā tathā tvam eva vāṇī svāhā
tvam tvayi āyattam idam jagat tvam
eva sarvabhūteṣu vasasi iha caturvidhā
31. puṣṭiḥ dyutiḥ tathā kīrtiḥ siddhiḥ
vṛddhiḥ umā tathā tvam eva vāṇī tvam
svāhā idam jagat tvayi āyattam tvam
eva iha sarvabhūteṣu caturvidhā vasasi
31. You are nourishment, radiance, and fame; success, prosperity, and Umā (the Divine Mother). You are indeed the goddess of speech (Vāṇī) and you are Svāhā. This entire world depends upon you. You alone dwell here in all beings (bhūteṣu) in four forms.
एवं सरस्वती राजन्स्तूयमाना महर्षिणा ।
वेगेनोवाह तं विप्रं विश्वामित्राश्रमं प्रति ।
न्यवेदयत चाभीक्ष्णं विश्वामित्राय तं मुनिम् ॥३२॥
32. evaṁ sarasvatī rājanstūyamānā maharṣiṇā ,
vegenovāha taṁ vipraṁ viśvāmitrāśramaṁ prati ,
nyavedayata cābhīkṣṇaṁ viśvāmitrāya taṁ munim.
32. evam sarasvatī rājan stūyamānā
maharṣiṇā vegena uvāha tam vipram
viśvāmitrāśramam prati nyavedayata
ca abhīkṣṇam viśvāmitrāya tam munim
32. rājan evam maharṣiṇā stūyamānā
sarasvatī tam vipram vegena
viśvāmitrāśramam prati uvāha ca abhīkṣṇam
tam munim viśvāmitrāya nyavedayata
32. O King, thus, Sarasvati, being praised by the great sage, swiftly carried that Brahmin towards Viśvāmitra's hermitage (āśrama). And she repeatedly presented that sage to Viśvāmitra.
तमानीतं सरस्वत्या दृष्ट्वा कोपसमन्वितः ।
अथान्वेषत्प्रहरणं वसिष्ठान्तकरं तदा ॥३३॥
33. tamānītaṁ sarasvatyā dṛṣṭvā kopasamanvitaḥ ,
athānveṣatpraharaṇaṁ vasiṣṭhāntakaraṁ tadā.
33. tam ānītam sarasvatyā dṛṣṭvā kopasamanvitaḥ
atha anveṣat praharaṇam vasiṣṭhāntakaram tadā
33. sarasvatyā ānītam tam dṛṣṭvā kopasamanvitaḥ
atha tadā vasiṣṭhāntakaram praharaṇam anveṣat
33. Upon seeing that sage, who had been brought by Sarasvati, and filled with anger, he then searched for a weapon that would bring about the end of Vasiṣṭha at that moment.
तं तु क्रुद्धमभिप्रेक्ष्य ब्रह्महत्याभयान्नदी ।
अपोवाह वसिष्ठं तु प्राचीं दिशमतन्द्रिता ।
उभयोः कुर्वती वाक्यं वञ्चयित्वा तु गाधिजम् ॥३४॥
34. taṁ tu kruddhamabhiprekṣya brahmahatyābhayānnadī ,
apovāha vasiṣṭhaṁ tu prācīṁ diśamatandritā ,
ubhayoḥ kurvatī vākyaṁ vañcayitvā tu gādhijam.
34. tam tu kruddham abhiprekṣya
brahmahatyābhayāt nadī apovāha vasiṣṭham tu
prācīm diśam atandritā ubhayoḥ
kurvatī vākyam vañcayitvā tu gādhijam
34. nadī kruddham tam abhiprekṣya brahmahatyābhayāt tu atandritā vasiṣṭham prācīm diśam apovāha,
gādhijam tu vañcayitvā ubhayoḥ vākyam kurvatī.
34. Perceiving him (Viśvāmitra) to be enraged, and fearing the sin of brahminicide (brahmahatyā), the river, being diligent, carried Vasiṣṭha away towards the eastern direction. Thus, by deceiving Gādhi's son (Viśvāmitra), it was acting in accordance with the wishes of both (Vasiṣṭha and Viśvāmitra).
ततोऽपवाहितं दृष्ट्वा वसिष्ठमृषिसत्तमम् ।
अब्रवीदथ संक्रुद्धो विश्वामित्रो ह्यमर्षणः ॥३५॥
35. tato'pavāhitaṁ dṛṣṭvā vasiṣṭhamṛṣisattamam ,
abravīdatha saṁkruddho viśvāmitro hyamarṣaṇaḥ.
35. tataḥ apovāhitam dṛṣṭvā vasiṣṭham ṛṣisattamam
abravīt atha saṃkruddhaḥ viśvāmitraḥ hi amarṣaṇaḥ
35. tataḥ vasiṣṭham ṛṣisattamam apovāhitam dṛṣṭvā,
atha saṃkruddhaḥ amarṣaṇaḥ viśvāmitraḥ hi abravīt.
35. Then, having seen Vasiṣṭha, the best of sages, carried away, Viśvāmitra, greatly enraged and intolerant, spoke.
यस्मान्मा त्वं सरिच्छ्रेष्ठे वञ्चयित्वा पुनर्गता ।
शोणितं वह कल्याणि रक्षोग्रामणिसंमतम् ॥३६॥
36. yasmānmā tvaṁ saricchreṣṭhe vañcayitvā punargatā ,
śoṇitaṁ vaha kalyāṇi rakṣogrāmaṇisaṁmatam.
36. yasmāt mā tvam sarit śreṣṭhe vañcayitvā punar
gatā śoṇitam vaha kalyāṇi rakṣogrāmaṇisaṃmatam
36. yasmāt tvam,
saricchreṣṭhe,
mām vañcayitvā punargatā,
(tasmāt he) kalyāṇi,
rakṣogrāmaṇisaṃmatam śoṇitam vaha!
36. "Because you, O best of rivers, have deceived me and gone away, O auspicious one, carry blood, (blood that is) acceptable to the chiefs of the Rākṣasas!"
ततः सरस्वती शप्ता विश्वामित्रेण धीमता ।
अवहच्छोणितोन्मिश्रं तोयं संवत्सरं तदा ॥३७॥
37. tataḥ sarasvatī śaptā viśvāmitreṇa dhīmatā ,
avahacchoṇitonmiśraṁ toyaṁ saṁvatsaraṁ tadā.
37. tataḥ sarasvatī śaptā viśvāmitreṇa dhīmatā
avahat śoṇitonmiśram toyam saṃvatsaram tadā
37. tataḥ śaptā sarasvatī dhīmatā viśvāmitreṇa tadā śoṇitonmiśram toyam saṃvatsaram avahat.
37. Then Sarasvatī, cursed by the intelligent Viśvāmitra, carried water mixed with blood for a year at that time.
अथर्षयश्च देवाश्च गन्धर्वाप्सरसस्तथा ।
सरस्वतीं तथा दृष्ट्वा बभूवुर्भृशदुःखिताः ॥३८॥
38. atharṣayaśca devāśca gandharvāpsarasastathā ,
sarasvatīṁ tathā dṛṣṭvā babhūvurbhṛśaduḥkhitāḥ.
38. atha ṛṣayaḥ ca devāḥ ca gandharvāpsarasaḥ tathā
sarasvatīm tathā dṛṣṭvā babhūvuḥ bhṛśaduḥkhitāḥ
38. atha ṛṣayaḥ ca devāḥ ca gandharvāpsarasaḥ tathā
sarasvatīm tathā dṛṣṭvā bhṛśaduḥkhitāḥ babhūvuḥ
38. Then, seeing Sarasvati in that condition, the sages, gods, Gandharvas, and Apsaras became greatly distressed.
एवं वसिष्ठापवाहो लोके ख्यातो जनाधिप ।
आगच्छच्च पुनर्मार्गं स्वमेव सरितां वरा ॥३९॥
39. evaṁ vasiṣṭhāpavāho loke khyāto janādhipa ,
āgacchacca punarmārgaṁ svameva saritāṁ varā.
39. evam vasiṣṭhāpavāhaḥ loke khyātaḥ janādhipa
āgacchat ca punaḥ mārgam svam eva saritām varā
39. janādhipa evam vasiṣṭhāpavāhaḥ loke khyātaḥ ca
saritām varā punaḥ svam eva mārgam āgacchat
39. O king, this diversion (apavāha) caused by Vasiṣṭha became well-known in the world. And then, the best of rivers, Sarasvati, returned to her own course.
