वसुमना उवाच ।
पृच्छामि त्वां वसुमना रौशदश्विर्यद्यस्ति लोको दिवि मह्यं नरेन्द्र ।
यद्यन्तरिक्षे प्रथितो महात्मन्क्षेत्रज्ञं त्वां तस्य धर्मस्य मन्ये ॥१॥
1. vasumanā uvāca ,
pṛcchāmi tvāṁ vasumanā rauśadaśvi;ryadyasti loko divi mahyaṁ narendra ,
yadyantarikṣe prathito mahātma;nkṣetrajñaṁ tvāṁ tasya dharmasya manye.
1. vasumanāḥ uvāca pṛcchāmi tvām vasumanāḥ
rauśadaśviḥ yadi asti lokaḥ divi mahyam
narendra yadi antarikṣe prathitaḥ mahātman
kṣetrajñam tvām tasya dharmasya manye
1. Vasumanas said: "I, Vasumanas Raushadaśvi, ask you, O King (narendra): is there a world in heaven for me, or a renowned one in the mid-region? O great-souled one (mahātman), I consider you to be the knower of the natural law (dharma) regarding that."
ययातिरुवाच ।
यदन्तरिक्षं पृथिवी दिशश्च यत्तेजसा तपते भानुमांश्च ।
लोकास्तावन्तो दिवि संस्थिता वै ते नान्तवन्तः प्रतिपालयन्ति ॥२॥
2. yayātiruvāca ,
yadantarikṣaṁ pṛthivī diśaśca; yattejasā tapate bhānumāṁśca ,
lokāstāvanto divi saṁsthitā vai; te nāntavantaḥ pratipālayanti.
2. yayātiḥ uvāca | yat antarikṣam pṛthivī
diśaḥ ca yat tejasā tapate bhānumān
ca | lokāḥ tāvantaḥ divi saṃsthitā
vai te na antavantaḥ pratipālayanti
2. Yayāti said: Whatever exists as space, earth, and the directions, and the sun which shines with its splendor—all those worlds established in heaven are not endless (i.e., they are finite); they do not wait indefinitely (for one whose merits are exhausted).
वसुमना उवाच ।
तांस्ते ददामि पत मा प्रपातं ये मे लोकास्तव ते वै भवन्तु ।
क्रीणीष्वैनांस्तृणकेनापि राजन्प्रतिग्रहस्ते यदि सम्यक्प्रदुष्टः ॥३॥
3. vasumanā uvāca ,
tāṁste dadāmi pata mā prapātaṁ; ye me lokāstava te vai bhavantu ,
krīṇīṣvaināṁstṛṇakenāpi rāja;npratigrahaste yadi samyakpraduṣṭaḥ.
3. vasumanāḥ uvāca | tān te dadāmi pata mā
prapātam ye me lokāḥ tava te vai
bhavantu | krīṇīṣva enān tṛṇakena api rājan
pratigrahaḥ te yadi samyak praduṣṭaḥ
3. Vasumanas said: O falling one, do not fall into ruin! I give them (my worlds) to you; let those worlds that are mine truly become yours. O King, if your acceptance of gifts (dāna) is truly flawed (or improper for you), then buy these (worlds) even with a blade of grass.
ययातिरुवाच ।
न मिथ्याहं विक्रयं वै स्मरामि वृथा गृहीतं शिशुकाच्छङ्कमानः ।
कुर्यां न चैवाकृतपूर्वमन्यैर्विवित्समानः किमु तत्र साधु ॥४॥
4. yayātiruvāca ,
na mithyāhaṁ vikrayaṁ vai smarāmi; vṛthā gṛhītaṁ śiśukācchaṅkamānaḥ ,
kuryāṁ na caivākṛtapūrvamanyai;rvivitsamānaḥ kimu tatra sādhu.
4. yayātiḥ uvāca | na mithyā aham vikrayam
vai smarāmi vṛthā gṛhītam śiśukāt
śaṅkamānaḥ | kuryām na ca eva akṛtapūrvam
anyaiḥ vivitsamānaḥ kimu tatra sādhu
4. Yayāti said: I would not consider such a transaction (a 'sale' for a blade of grass) to be truly valid. Rather, I would be suspicious of taking something valuable in vain from a child (my young descendant). I would not do, nor indeed would I do, what has not been done before by others, desiring to know what is truly proper (dharma) in that situation.
वसुमना उवाच ।
तांस्त्वं लोकान्प्रतिपद्यस्व राजन्मया दत्तान्यदि नेष्टः क्रयस्ते ।
अहं न तान्वै प्रतिगन्ता नरेन्द्र सर्वे लोकास्तव ते वै भवन्तु ॥५॥
5. vasumanā uvāca ,
tāṁstvaṁ lokānpratipadyasva rāja;nmayā dattānyadi neṣṭaḥ krayaste ,
ahaṁ na tānvai pratigantā narendra; sarve lokāstava te vai bhavantu.
5. vasumanā uvāca tān tvam lokān pratipadyasva
rājan mayā dattān yadi na iṣṭaḥ
krayaḥ te aham na tān vai pratigantā
narendra sarve lokāḥ tava te vai bhavantu
5. Vasumana said: "O King, you should accept those worlds given by me, if their purchase is not desired by you. O Lord of men, I will certainly not take them back. Indeed, let all those worlds be yours."
शिबिरुवाच ।
पृच्छामि त्वां शिबिरौशीनरोऽहं ममापि लोका यदि सन्तीह तात ।
यद्यन्तरिक्षे यदि वा दिवि श्रिताः क्षेत्रज्ञं त्वां तस्य धर्मस्य मन्ये ॥६॥
6. śibiruvāca ,
pṛcchāmi tvāṁ śibirauśīnaro'haṁ; mamāpi lokā yadi santīha tāta ,
yadyantarikṣe yadi vā divi śritāḥ; kṣetrajñaṁ tvāṁ tasya dharmasya manye.
6. śibiḥ uvāca pṛcchāmi tvām śibiḥ auśīnaraḥ
aham mama api lokāḥ yadi santi iha
tāta yadi antarikṣe yadi vā divi śritāḥ
kṣetrajñam tvām tasya dharmasya manye
6. Shibi said: "I, Shibi, son of Ushinara, ask you, O dear one, if there are worlds for me here, whether they are situated in the intermediate space or in heaven. I consider you to be the knower of that natural law (dharma)."
ययातिरुवाच ।
न त्वं वाचा हृदयेनापि विद्वन्परीप्समानान्नावमंस्था नरेन्द्र ।
तेनानन्ता दिवि लोकाः श्रितास्ते विद्युद्रूपाः स्वनवन्तो महान्तः ॥७॥
7. yayātiruvāca ,
na tvaṁ vācā hṛdayenāpi vidva;nparīpsamānānnāvamaṁsthā narendra ,
tenānantā divi lokāḥ śritāste; vidyudrūpāḥ svanavanto mahāntaḥ.
7. yayātiḥ uvāca na tvam vācā hṛdayena
api vidvan parīpsamānān na avamaṃsthāḥ
narendra tena anantāḥ divi lokāḥ śritāḥ
te vidyudrūpāḥ svanavantaḥ mahāntaḥ
7. Yayati said: "O learned one, you should not disrespect those who seek refuge, either with words or even in your heart, O King. Therefore, your endless worlds, situated in heaven, are like lightning, resounding, and vast."
शिबिरुवाच ।
तांस्त्वं लोकान्प्रतिपद्यस्व राजन्मया दत्तान्यदि नेष्टः क्रयस्ते ।
न चाहं तान्प्रतिपत्स्येह दत्त्वा यत्र गत्वा त्वमुपास्से ह लोकान् ॥८॥
8. śibiruvāca ,
tāṁstvaṁ lokānpratipadyasva rāja;nmayā dattānyadi neṣṭaḥ krayaste ,
na cāhaṁ tānpratipatsyeha dattvā; yatra gatvā tvamupāsse ha lokān.
8. śibiḥ uvāca tān tvam lokān pratipadyasva
rājan mayā dattān yadi na iṣṭaḥ krayaḥ
te na ca aham tān pratipattye iha
dattvā yatra gatvā tvam upāsse ha lokān
8. Śibi said, "O King, you should accept those worlds I have given, if you do not desire this transaction. For my part, I will not take back what I have given here, for you have already gone to those worlds and revered them."
ययातिरुवाच ।
यथा त्वमिन्द्रप्रतिमप्रभावस्ते चाप्यनन्ता नरदेव लोकाः ।
तथाद्य लोके न रमेऽन्यदत्ते तस्माच्छिबे नाभिनन्दामि दायम् ॥९॥
9. yayātiruvāca ,
yathā tvamindrapratimaprabhāva;ste cāpyanantā naradeva lokāḥ ,
tathādya loke na rame'nyadatte; tasmācchibe nābhinandāmi dāyam.
9. yayātiḥ uvāca yathā tvam indrapratimaprabhāvaḥ
te ca api anantāḥ naradeva
lokāḥ tathā adya loke na rame
anyadatte tasmāt śibe na abhinandāmi dāyam
9. Yayāti replied, "Although your power (prabhāva) is comparable to Indra's, and your worlds, O Lord of men, are indeed boundless, still, today I find no delight in a world given by another. Therefore, O Śibi, I do not welcome your offering."
अष्टक उवाच ।
न चेदेकैकशो राजँल्लोकान्नः प्रतिनन्दसि ।
सर्वे प्रदाय भवते गन्तारो नरकं वयम् ॥१०॥
10. aṣṭaka uvāca ,
na cedekaikaśo rājaँllokānnaḥ pratinandasi ,
sarve pradāya bhavate gantāro narakaṁ vayam.
10. aṣṭakaḥ uvāca na cet ekaikaśaḥ rājan lokān naḥ
pratinandasi sarve pradāya bhavate gantāraḥ narakam vayam
10. Aṣṭaka said, "O King, if you do not accept our worlds, each offered individually, then all of us, having offered them to you, will surely go to hell."
ययातिरुवाच ।
यदर्हाय ददध्वं तत्सन्तः सत्यानृशंस्यतः ।
अहं तु नाभिधृष्णोमि यत्कृतं न मया पुरा ॥११॥
11. yayātiruvāca ,
yadarhāya dadadhvaṁ tatsantaḥ satyānṛśaṁsyataḥ ,
ahaṁ tu nābhidhṛṣṇomi yatkṛtaṁ na mayā purā.
11. yayātiḥ uvāca yat arhāya dadadhvam tat santaḥ satya-anṛśaṃsyataḥ
aham tu na abhidhṛṣṇomi yat kṛtam na mayā purā
11. Yayāti said: "O virtuous ones, whatever you give to the deserving out of truthfulness and compassion, I am unable to perform such an act, as it was not done by me in the past."
अष्टक उवाच ।
कस्यैते प्रतिदृश्यन्ते रथाः पञ्च हिरण्मयाः ।
उच्चैः सन्तः प्रकाशन्ते ज्वलन्तोऽग्निशिखा इव ॥१२॥
12. aṣṭaka uvāca ,
kasyaite pratidṛśyante rathāḥ pañca hiraṇmayāḥ ,
uccaiḥ santaḥ prakāśante jvalanto'gniśikhā iva.
12. aṣṭakaḥ uvāca kasya ete pratidṛśyante rathāḥ pañca hiraṇmayāḥ
uccaiḥ santaḥ prakāśante jvalantaḥ agni-śikhāḥ iva
12. Aṣṭaka said: "Whose are these five golden chariots that appear high up, shining brightly like blazing flames of fire?"
ययातिरुवाच ।
युष्मानेते हि वक्ष्यन्ति रथाः पञ्च हिरण्मयाः ।
उच्चैः सन्तः प्रकाशन्ते ज्वलन्तोऽग्निशिखा इव ॥१३॥
13. yayātiruvāca ,
yuṣmānete hi vakṣyanti rathāḥ pañca hiraṇmayāḥ ,
uccaiḥ santaḥ prakāśante jvalanto'gniśikhā iva.
13. yayātiḥ uvāca yuṣmān ete hi vakṣyanti rathāḥ pañca
hiraṇmayāḥ uccaiḥ santaḥ prakāśante jvalantaḥ agniśikhāḥ iva
13. Yayati said: Indeed, these five golden chariots will carry you. They shine brightly, high above, like blazing flames of fire.
अष्टक उवाच ।
आतिष्ठस्व रथं राजन्विक्रमस्व विहायसा ।
वयमप्यनुयास्यामो यदा कालो भविष्यति ॥१४॥
14. aṣṭaka uvāca ,
ātiṣṭhasva rathaṁ rājanvikramasva vihāyasā ,
vayamapyanuyāsyāmo yadā kālo bhaviṣyati.
14. aṣṭakaḥ uvāca ātiṣṭhasva ratham rājan vikramasva
vihāyasā vayam api anuyāsyāmaḥ yadā kālaḥ bhaviṣyati
14. Aṣṭaka said: O King, ascend the chariot and proceed through the sky. We too will follow when the time comes.
ययातिरुवाच ।
सर्वैरिदानीं गन्तव्यं सहस्वर्गजितो वयम् ।
एष नो विरजाः पन्था दृश्यते देवसद्मनः ॥१५॥
15. yayātiruvāca ,
sarvairidānīṁ gantavyaṁ sahasvargajito vayam ,
eṣa no virajāḥ panthā dṛśyate devasadmanaḥ.
15. yayātiḥ uvāca sarvaiḥ idānīm gantavyam sahasvargajitaḥ
vayam eṣaḥ naḥ virajāḥ panthāḥ dṛśyate devasadmanaḥ
15. Yayati said: All of us must go now, for we have together conquered heaven. This pure path to the abode of the gods is visible to us.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तेऽधिरुह्य रथान्सर्वे प्रयाता नृपसत्तमाः ।
आक्रमन्तो दिवं भाभिर्धर्मेणावृत्य रोदसी ॥१६॥
16. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
te'dhiruhya rathānsarve prayātā nṛpasattamāḥ ,
ākramanto divaṁ bhābhirdharmeṇāvṛtya rodasī.
16. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca te adhiruhya rathān sarve prayātāḥ
nṛpasattamāḥ ākramantaḥ divam bhābhiḥ dharmeṇa āvṛtya rodasī
16. Vaiśampāyana said: All those best among kings, having ascended their chariots, departed. They pervaded the sky with their radiance, covering heaven and earth with their dharma.
अष्टक उवाच ।
अहं मन्ये पूर्वमेकोऽस्मि गन्ता सखा चेन्द्रः सर्वथा मे महात्मा ।
कस्मादेवं शिबिरौशीनरोऽयमेकोऽत्यगात्सर्ववेगेन वाहान् ॥१७॥
17. aṣṭaka uvāca ,
ahaṁ manye pūrvameko'smi gantā; sakhā cendraḥ sarvathā me mahātmā ,
kasmādevaṁ śibirauśīnaro'ya;meko'tyagātsarvavegena vāhān.
17. aṣṭakaḥ uvāca aham manye pūrvam ekaḥ
asmi gantā sakhā ca indraḥ sarvathā
me mahātmā kasmāt evam śibiḥ auśīnaraḥ
ayam ekaḥ atyagāt sarvavegena vāhān
17. Aṣṭaka said: I believe I was formerly the sole one to proceed, and Indra was always my great-souled friend. Why then has this Śibi, son of Uśīnara, surpassed the horses alone with all speed?
ययातिरुवाच ।
अददाद्देवयानाय यावद्वित्तमविन्दत ।
उशीनरस्य पुत्रोऽयं तस्माच्छ्रेष्ठो हि नः शिबिः ॥१८॥
18. yayātiruvāca ,
adadāddevayānāya yāvadvittamavindata ,
uśīnarasya putro'yaṁ tasmācchreṣṭho hi naḥ śibiḥ.
18. yayātiḥ uvāca | adadāt devayānāya yāvat vittam avindata
| uśīnarasya putraḥ ayam tasmāt śreṣṭhaḥ hi naḥ śibiḥ
18. Yayāti said: "He gave to Devayānī whatever wealth he acquired. Therefore, this son of Uśīnara, Śibi, is indeed superior to us."
दानं तपः सत्यमथापि धर्मो ह्रीः श्रीः क्षमा सौम्य तथा तितिक्षा ।
राजन्नेतान्यप्रतिमस्य राज्ञः शिबेः स्थितान्यनृशंसस्य बुद्ध्या ।
एवंवृत्तो ह्रीनिषेधश्च यस्मात्तस्माच्छिबिरत्यगाद्वै रथेन ॥१९॥
19. dānaṁ tapaḥ satyamathāpi dharmo; hrīḥ śrīḥ kṣamā saumya tathā titikṣā ,
rājannetānyapratimasya rājñaḥ; śibeḥ sthitānyanṛśaṁsasya buddhyā ,
evaṁvṛtto hrīniṣedhaśca yasmā;ttasmācchibiratyagādvai rathena.
19. dānam tapaḥ satyam atha api dharmaḥ hrīḥ śrīḥ kṣamā
saumya tathā titikṣā | rājan etāni apratimasya rājñaḥ
śibeḥ sthitāni anṛśaṃsasya buddhyā | evamvṛttaḥ
hrīniṣedhaḥ ca yasmāt tasmāt śibiḥ atyagāt vai rathena
19. O gentle one, O King, these qualities—charity, austerity, truth, and also dharma, modesty, prosperity, forgiveness, and forbearance—are firmly established in Śibi, the incomparable and compassionate king, by his intellect. Because his conduct was such and he was free from disgrace, Śibi indeed surpassed all others by means of his (virtuous) chariot.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
अथाष्टकः पुनरेवान्वपृच्छन्मातामहं कौतुकादिन्द्रकल्पम् ।
पृच्छामि त्वां नृपते ब्रूहि सत्यं कुतश्च कस्यासि सुतश्च कस्य ।
कृतं त्वया यद्धि न तस्य कर्ता लोके त्वदन्यः क्षत्रियो ब्राह्मणो वा ॥२०॥
20. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
athāṣṭakaḥ punarevānvapṛccha;nmātāmahaṁ kautukādindrakalpam ,
pṛcchāmi tvāṁ nṛpate brūhi satyaṁ; kutaśca kasyāsi sutaśca kasya ,
kṛtaṁ tvayā yaddhi na tasya kartā; loke tvadanyaḥ kṣatriyo brāhmaṇo vā.
20. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca | atha aṣṭakaḥ punaḥ eva anvapṛcchan
mātāmaham kautukāt indrakalpam | pṛcchāmi tvām nṛpate brūhi
satyam kutaḥ ca kasya asi sutaḥ ca kasya | kṛtam tvayā yat
hi na tasya kartā loke tvat anyaḥ kṣatriyaḥ brāhmaṇaḥ vā
20. Vaiśampāyana said: "Then Aṣṭaka, out of curiosity, again questioned his maternal grandfather, who was like Indra: 'O King, I ask you, tell me the truth: From where do you come, and whose son are you? For indeed, what you have accomplished, no other kṣatriya or Brahmin in the world, apart from you, is capable of doing it.'"
ययातिरुवाच ।
ययातिरस्मि नहुषस्य पुत्रः पूरोः पिता सार्वभौमस्त्विहासम् ।
गुह्यमर्थं मामकेभ्यो ब्रवीमि मातामहोऽहं भवतां प्रकाशः ॥२१॥
21. yayātiruvāca ,
yayātirasmi nahuṣasya putraḥ; pūroḥ pitā sārvabhaumastvihāsam ,
guhyamarthaṁ māmakebhyo bravīmi; mātāmaho'haṁ bhavatāṁ prakāśaḥ.
21. yayātiḥ uvāca | yayātiḥ asmi nahuṣasya
putraḥ pūroḥ pitā sārvabhaumaḥ tu
iha āsam | guhyam artham māmakebhyaḥ
bravīmi mātāmahaḥ aham bhavatām prakāśaḥ
21. Yayāti said: "I am Yayāti, the son of Nahuṣa and the father of Pūru. Indeed, I was a universal sovereign here on earth. I reveal this secret matter to my own (descendants): I am your maternal grandfather, now manifest."
सर्वामिमां पृथिवीं निर्जिगाय प्रस्थे बद्ध्वा ह्यददं ब्राह्मणेभ्यः ।
मेध्यानश्वानेकशफान्सुरूपांस्तदा देवाः पुण्यभाजो भवन्ति ॥२२॥
22. sarvāmimāṁ pṛthivīṁ nirjigāya; prasthe baddhvā hyadadaṁ brāhmaṇebhyaḥ ,
medhyānaśvānekaśaphānsurūpāṁ;stadā devāḥ puṇyabhājo bhavanti.
22. sarvām imām pṛthivīm nirjigāya
prasthe baddhvā hi adadam brāhmaṇebhyaḥ
| medhyān aśvān ekaśaphān surūpān
tadā devāḥ puṇyabhājaḥ bhavanti
22. I conquered this entire earth. Indeed, having secured (the land) with a prāstha (measure), I gave it to Brahmins. (Similarly, I gave) pure, single-hoofed, beautiful horses. Then, the gods became partakers of merit.
अदामहं पृथिवीं ब्राह्मणेभ्यः पूर्णामिमामखिलां वाहनस्य ।
गोभिः सुवर्णेन धनैश्च मुख्यैस्तत्रासन्गाः शतमर्बुदानि ॥२३॥
23. adāmahaṁ pṛthivīṁ brāhmaṇebhyaḥ; pūrṇāmimāmakhilāṁ vāhanasya ,
gobhiḥ suvarṇena dhanaiśca mukhyai;statrāsangāḥ śatamarbudāni.
23. adām aham pṛthivīm brāhmaṇebhyaḥ
pūrṇām imām akhilām vāhanasya
gobhiḥ suvarṇena dhanaiḥ ca mukhyaiḥ
tatra āsan gāḥ śatam arbudāni
23. I gave this entire, complete earth, which is the bearer of all (life and resources), to the Brahmins. [I also gave it] with cows, gold, and principal riches. Furthermore, there were a billion cows.
सत्येन मे द्यौश्च वसुंधरा च तथैवाग्निर्ज्वलते मानुषेषु ।
न मे वृथा व्याहृतमेव वाक्यं सत्यं हि सन्तः प्रतिपूजयन्ति ।
सर्वे च देवा मुनयश्च लोकाः सत्येन पूज्या इति मे मनोगतम् ॥२४॥
24. satyena me dyauśca vasuṁdharā ca; tathaivāgnirjvalate mānuṣeṣu ,
na me vṛthā vyāhṛtameva vākyaṁ; satyaṁ hi santaḥ pratipūjayanti ,
sarve ca devā munayaśca lokāḥ; satyena pūjyā iti me manogatam.
24. satyena me dyauḥ ca vasundharā ca tathā eva agniḥ
jvalate mānuṣeṣu na me vṛthā vyāhṛtam eva vākyam
satyam hi santaḥ pratipūjayanti sarve ca devāḥ
munayaḥ ca lokāḥ satyena pūjyāḥ iti me manogatam
24. By truth, both heaven and earth exist for me, and similarly, fire burns among human beings. My words are never spoken in vain, for virtuous people indeed honor truth. And all gods, sages, and beings in the worlds are worthy of veneration through truth – this is my conviction.
यो नः स्वर्गजितः सर्वान्यथावृत्तं निवेदयेत् ।
अनसूयुर्द्विजाग्रेभ्यः स लभेन्नः सलोकताम् ॥२५॥
25. yo naḥ svargajitaḥ sarvānyathāvṛttaṁ nivedayet ,
anasūyurdvijāgrebhyaḥ sa labhennaḥ salokatām.
25. yaḥ naḥ svargajitaḥ sarvān yathāvṛttam nivedayet
anasūyuḥ dvijāgrebhyaḥ saḥ labhet naḥ salokatām
25. Whoever, being free from envy, recounts all about us, the conquerors of heaven, exactly as it transpired, to the foremost among the twice-born (Brahmins), he shall attain co-existence in our realm.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवं राजा स महात्मा ह्यतीव स्वैर्दौहित्रैस्तारितोऽमित्रसाहः ।
त्यक्त्वा महीं परमोदारकर्मा स्वर्गं गतः कर्मभिर्व्याप्य पृथ्वीम् ॥२६॥
26. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evaṁ rājā sa mahātmā hyatīva; svairdauhitraistārito'mitrasāhaḥ ,
tyaktvā mahīṁ paramodārakarmā; svargaṁ gataḥ karmabhirvyāpya pṛthvīm.
26. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca evam rājā saḥ mahātmā
hi atīva svaiḥ dauhitraiḥ tāritaḥ
amitrasāhaḥ tyaktvā mahīm paramodārakarmā
svargam gataḥ karmabhiḥ vyāpya pṛthvīm
26. Vaiśampaayana said: Thus, that great-souled king, indeed a mighty foe-conqueror, was exceedingly delivered by his own grandsons. Having abandoned the earth, he, whose (karma) deeds were supremely noble, went to heaven after pervading the earth with his actions.
