वैशंपायन उवाच ।
युधिष्ठिरवचः श्रुत्वा भीमसेनपुरोगमाः ।
प्रहृष्टवदनाः सर्वे समुत्तस्थुर्नरर्षभाः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
yudhiṣṭhiravacaḥ śrutvā bhīmasenapurogamāḥ ,
prahṛṣṭavadanāḥ sarve samuttasthurnararṣabhāḥ.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Hearing Yudhiṣṭhira's words, all the best among men, led by Bhīmasena, rose up with joyful faces.
अभेद्यानि ततः सर्वे समनह्यन्त भारत ।
जाम्बूनदविचित्राणि कवचानि महारथाः ॥२॥
2. abhedyāni tataḥ sarve samanahyanta bhārata ,
jāmbūnadavicitrāṇi kavacāni mahārathāḥ.

2. Then, O Bhārata, all the great warriors put on their impenetrable armors, adorned with gold.
ते दंशिता रथैः सर्वे ध्वजिनः सशरासनाः ।
पाण्डवाः प्रत्यदृश्यन्त ज्वलिता इव पावकाः ॥३॥
3. te daṁśitā rathaiḥ sarve dhvajinaḥ saśarāsanāḥ ,
pāṇḍavāḥ pratyadṛśyanta jvalitā iva pāvakāḥ.
3. te daṃśitā rathaiḥ sarve dhvajinaḥ saśarāsanāḥ
pāṇḍavāḥ pratyadṛśyanta jvalitāḥ iva pāvakāḥ
3. All of them, the Pāṇḍavas, clad in armor, with their chariots, banners, and bows, appeared like blazing fires.
तान्रथान्साधु संपन्नान्संयुक्ताञ्जवनैर्हयैः ।
आस्थाय रथशार्दूलाः शीघ्रमेव ययुस्ततः ॥४॥
4. tānrathānsādhu saṁpannānsaṁyuktāñjavanairhayaiḥ ,
āsthāya rathaśārdūlāḥ śīghrameva yayustataḥ.
4. tān rathān sādhu saṃpannān saṃyuktān javanaiḥ hayaiḥ
āsthāya rathaśārdūlāḥ śīghram eva yayuḥ tataḥ
4. Mounting those chariots, which were well-equipped and yoked with swift horses, those tiger-like warriors (the Pāṇḍavas) departed very quickly from there.
ततः कौरवसैन्यानां प्रादुरासीन्महास्वनः ।
प्रयातान्सहितान्दृष्ट्वा पाण्डुपुत्रान्महारथान् ॥५॥
5. tataḥ kauravasainyānāṁ prādurāsīnmahāsvanaḥ ,
prayātānsahitāndṛṣṭvā pāṇḍuputrānmahārathān.
5. tataḥ kauravasainyānām prādurāsīt mahāsvanaḥ
prayātān sahitān dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍuputrān mahārathān
5. Upon seeing the sons of Pāṇḍu, the great charioteers, advance together, a mighty roar arose from the Kaurava armies.
जितकाशिनश्च खचरास्त्वरिताश्च महारथाः ।
क्षणेनैव वने तस्मिन्समाजग्मुरभीतवत् ॥६॥
6. jitakāśinaśca khacarāstvaritāśca mahārathāḥ ,
kṣaṇenaiva vane tasminsamājagmurabhītavat.
6. jitakāśinaḥ ca khacarāḥ tvaritāḥ ca mahārathāḥ
kṣaṇena eva vane tasmin samājagmuḥ abhītavat
6. The victorious sky-dwellers (gandharvas) and the swift great charioteers, fearless, gathered in that forest in an instant.
न्यवर्तन्त ततः सर्वे गन्धर्वा जितकाशिनः ।
दृष्ट्वा रथगतान्वीरान्पाण्डवांश्चतुरो रणे ॥७॥
7. nyavartanta tataḥ sarve gandharvā jitakāśinaḥ ,
dṛṣṭvā rathagatānvīrānpāṇḍavāṁścaturo raṇe.
7. nyavartanta tataḥ sarve gandharvāḥ jitakāśinaḥ
dṛṣṭvā rathagatān vīrān pāṇḍavān caturaḥ raṇe
7. Then, all the victorious gandharvas turned back, having seen the four brave Pāṇḍavas mounted on their chariots in battle.
तांस्तु विभ्राजतो दृष्ट्वा लोकपालानिवोद्यतान् ।
व्यूढानीका व्यतिष्ठन्त गन्धमादनवासिनः ॥८॥
8. tāṁstu vibhrājato dṛṣṭvā lokapālānivodyatān ,
vyūḍhānīkā vyatiṣṭhanta gandhamādanavāsinaḥ.
8. tān tu vibhrājataḥ dṛṣṭvā lokapālān iva udyatān
vyūḍhānīkāḥ vyatiṣṭhanta gandhamādanavāsinaḥ
8. Having seen them shining like the ready world-guardians (lokapālas), the residents of Gandhamādana arrayed their troops and stood ready.
राज्ञस्तु वचनं श्रुत्वा धर्मराजस्य धीमतः ।
क्रमेण मृदुना युद्धमुपक्रामन्त भारत ॥९॥
9. rājñastu vacanaṁ śrutvā dharmarājasya dhīmataḥ ,
krameṇa mṛdunā yuddhamupakrāmanta bhārata.
9. rājñaḥ tu vacanam śrutvā dharmarājasya dhīmataḥ
krameṇa mṛdunā yuddham upakrāmantam bhārata
9. O Bhārata, upon hearing the words of the wise King of Righteousness (Dharmarāja), they gradually initiated the battle gently.
न तु गन्धर्वराजस्य सैनिका मन्दचेतसः ।
शक्यन्ते मृदुना श्रेयः प्रतिपादयितुं तदा ॥१०॥
10. na tu gandharvarājasya sainikā mandacetasaḥ ,
śakyante mṛdunā śreyaḥ pratipādayituṁ tadā.
10. na tu gandharvarājasya sainikā mandacetasaḥ
śakyante mṛdunā śreyaḥ pratipādayitum tadā
10. However, at that time, the dull-witted soldiers of the Gandharva king could not be made to accept what was beneficial (śreyas) by gentle persuasion.
ततस्तान्युधि दुर्धर्षः सव्यसाची परंतपः ।
सान्त्वपूर्वमिदं वाक्यमुवाच खचरान्रणे ॥११॥
11. tatastānyudhi durdharṣaḥ savyasācī paraṁtapaḥ ,
sāntvapūrvamidaṁ vākyamuvāca khacarānraṇe.
11. tataḥ tān yudhi durdharṣaḥ savyasācī paraṃtapaḥ
sāntvapūrvam idam vākyam uvāca khacarān raṇe
11. Then, the irresistible Arjuna (Savyasācī), the tormentor of foes (Paraṃtapa), spoke these conciliatory words to those Gandharvas (khacaras) in the battlefield.
नैतद्गन्धर्वराजस्य युक्तं कर्म जुगुप्सितम् ।
परदाराभिमर्शश्च मानुषैश्च समागमः ॥१२॥
12. naitadgandharvarājasya yuktaṁ karma jugupsitam ,
paradārābhimarśaśca mānuṣaiśca samāgamaḥ.
12. na etat gandharvarājasya yuktam karma jugupsitam
paradārābhimarśaḥ ca mānuṣaiḥ ca samāgamaḥ
12. This detestable act of molesting others' wives and associating with humans is not fitting for the Gandharva king.
उत्सृजध्वं महावीर्यान्धृतराष्ट्रसुतानिमान् ।
दारांश्चैषां विमुञ्चध्वं धर्मराजस्य शासनात् ॥१३॥
13. utsṛjadhvaṁ mahāvīryāndhṛtarāṣṭrasutānimān ,
dārāṁścaiṣāṁ vimuñcadhvaṁ dharmarājasya śāsanāt.
13. utsṛjadhvam mahāvīryān dhṛtarāṣṭrasutān imān
dārān ca eṣām vimuñcadhvam dharmarājasya śāsanāt
13. Release these exceedingly valiant sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra and their wives, in accordance with the command of the king of natural law (dharma).
एवमुक्तास्तु गन्धर्वाः पाण्डवेन यशस्विना ।
उत्स्मयन्तस्तदा पार्थमिदं वचनमब्रुवन् ॥१४॥
14. evamuktāstu gandharvāḥ pāṇḍavena yaśasvinā ,
utsmayantastadā pārthamidaṁ vacanamabruvan.
14. evam uktāḥ tu gandharvāḥ pāṇḍavena yaśasvinā
utsmayantaḥ tadā pārtham idam vacanam abruvan
14. Indeed, having been thus addressed by the glorious son of Pāṇḍu, the Gandharvas then, smiling, spoke these words to Pārtha.
एकस्यैव वयं तात कुर्याम वचनं भुवि ।
यस्य शासनमाज्ञाय चराम विगतज्वराः ॥१५॥
15. ekasyaiva vayaṁ tāta kuryāma vacanaṁ bhuvi ,
yasya śāsanamājñāya carāma vigatajvarāḥ.
15. ekasya eva vayam tāta kuryāma vacanam bhuvi
yasya śāsanam ājñāya carāma vigatajvarāḥ
15. O dear one, on this earth, we only obey the command of one (being), whose decree, having understood, we follow, free from all distress.
तेनैकेन यथादिष्टं तथा वर्ताम भारत ।
न शास्ता विद्यतेऽस्माकमन्यस्तस्मात्सुरेश्वरात् ॥१६॥
16. tenaikena yathādiṣṭaṁ tathā vartāma bhārata ,
na śāstā vidyate'smākamanyastasmātsureśvarāt.
16. tena ekena yathādiṣṭam tathā vartāma bhārata na
śāstā vidyate asmākam anyaḥ tasmāt sureśvarāt
16. O descendant of Bharata, we act exactly as instructed by that one (being). There is no other ruler for us than that lord of the gods.
एवमुक्तस्तु गन्धर्वैः कुन्तीपुत्रो धनंजयः ।
गन्धर्वान्पुनरेवेदं वचनं प्रत्यभाषत ॥१७॥
17. evamuktastu gandharvaiḥ kuntīputro dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
gandharvānpunarevedaṁ vacanaṁ pratyabhāṣata.
17. evam uktaḥ tu gandharvaiḥ kuntīputraḥ dhanañjayaḥ
gandharvān punar eva idam vacanam pratyabhāṣata
17. Thus addressed by the Gandharvas, Arjuna (Kuntīputra), the winner of wealth (dhanañjaya), then spoke this reply again to the Gandharvas.
यदि साम्ना न मोक्षध्वं गन्धर्वा धृतराष्ट्रजम् ।
मोक्षयिष्यामि विक्रम्य स्वयमेव सुयोधनम् ॥१८॥
18. yadi sāmnā na mokṣadhvaṁ gandharvā dhṛtarāṣṭrajam ,
mokṣayiṣyāmi vikramya svayameva suyodhanam.
18. yadi sāmnā na mokṣadhvam gandharvāḥ dhṛtarāṣṭra-jam
mokṣayiṣyāmi vikramya svayam eva suyodhanam
18. If, O Gandharvas, you do not release Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son (Suyodhana) peacefully, then I myself will release Suyodhana by exerting my valor.
एवमुक्त्वा ततः पार्थः सव्यसाची धनंजयः ।
ससर्ज निशितान्बाणान्खचरान्खचरान्प्रति ॥१९॥
19. evamuktvā tataḥ pārthaḥ savyasācī dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
sasarja niśitānbāṇānkhacarānkhacarānprati.
19. evam uktvā tataḥ pārthaḥ savyasācī dhanañjayaḥ
sasarja niśitān bāṇān khacarān khacarān prati
19. Having spoken thus, then Arjuna (Pārtha), the ambidextrous (Savyasācī), the winner of wealth (dhanañjaya), released sharp arrows against each and every aerial being (khacara).
तथैव शरवर्षेण गन्धर्वास्ते बलोत्कटाः ।
पाण्डवानभ्यवर्तन्त पाण्डवाश्च दिवौकसः ॥२०॥
20. tathaiva śaravarṣeṇa gandharvāste balotkaṭāḥ ,
pāṇḍavānabhyavartanta pāṇḍavāśca divaukasaḥ.
20. tathā eva śaravarṣeṇa gandharvāḥ te balotkaṭāḥ
pāṇḍavān abhyavartanta pāṇḍavāḥ ca divaukasaḥ
20. Likewise, those exceedingly powerful Gandharvas attacked the Pāṇḍavas with a shower of arrows, and the Pāṇḍavas attacked the celestial beings (divaukasaḥ) (Gandharvas).
ततः सुतुमुलं युद्धं गन्धर्वाणां तरस्विनाम् ।
बभूव भीमवेगानां पाण्डवानां च भारत ॥२१॥
21. tataḥ sutumulaṁ yuddhaṁ gandharvāṇāṁ tarasvinām ,
babhūva bhīmavegānāṁ pāṇḍavānāṁ ca bhārata.
21. tataḥ sutumulam yuddham gandharvāṇām tarasvinām
babhūva bhīmavegānām pāṇḍavānām ca bhārata
21. O Bhārata, then a very tumultuous battle occurred between the mighty Gandharvas and the Pāṇḍavas, who possessed terrible speed.
