शंतनुः पालयामास यथावत्पृथिवीमिमाम् ।
तथा विचित्रवीर्यश्च भीष्मेण परिपालितः ।
पालयामास वस्तातो विदितं वो नसंशयः ॥१॥
1. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
śaṁtanuḥ pālayāmāsa yathāvatpṛthivīmimām ,
tathā vicitravīryaśca bhīṣmeṇa paripālitaḥ ,
pālayāmāsa vastāto viditaṁ vo nasaṁśayaḥ.
1. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca śaṁtanuḥ pālayāmāsa
yathāvat pṛthivīm imām tathā
vicitravīryaḥ ca bhīṣmeṇa paripālitaḥ pālayāmāsa
vaḥ tātaḥ viditam vaḥ na saṃśayaḥ
1. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca śaṁtanuḥ imām pṛthivīm
yathāvat pālayāmāsa tathā ca bhīṣmeṇa
paripālitaḥ vaḥ tātaḥ vicitravīryaḥ
pālayāmāsa etat vaḥ viditam saṃśayaḥ na
1. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: 'Śaṁtanu ruled this earth properly. Similarly, your father, Vicitravīrya, protected by Bhīṣma, also ruled. This is certainly known to you all; there is no doubt.'
यथा च पाण्डुर्भ्राता मे दयितो भवतामभूत् ।
स चापि पालयामास यथावत्तच्च वेत्थ ह ॥२॥
2. yathā ca pāṇḍurbhrātā me dayito bhavatāmabhūt ,
sa cāpi pālayāmāsa yathāvattacca vettha ha.
2. yathā ca pāṇḍuḥ bhrātā me dayitaḥ bhavatām abhūt
saḥ ca api pālayām āsa yathāvat tat ca vettha ha
2. ca yathā me bhrātā pāṇḍuḥ bhavatām dayitaḥ abhūt ca api saḥ yathāvat pālayām āsa,
ca tat ha vettha
2. Just as my brother Pāṇḍu was dear to you, he also ruled properly, and you certainly know that.
मया च भवतां सम्यक्छुश्रूषा या कृतानघाः ।
असम्यग्वा महाभागास्तत्क्षन्तव्यमतन्द्रितैः ॥३॥
3. mayā ca bhavatāṁ samyakchuśrūṣā yā kṛtānaghāḥ ,
asamyagvā mahābhāgāstatkṣantavyamatandritaiḥ.
3. mayā ca bhavatām samyak śuśrūṣā yā kṛtā anaghāḥ
asamyak vā mahābhāgāḥ tat kṣantavyam atandritaiḥ
3. ca anaghāḥ mahābhāgāḥ bhavatām mayā yā samyak
śuśrūṣā kṛtā vā asamyak tat atandritaiḥ kṣantavyam
3. O sinless and highly esteemed ones, whatever service was properly rendered by me to you, or whatever was not proper, that should be forgiven by you, who are ever vigilant.
यच्च दुर्योधनेनेदं राज्यं भुक्तमकण्टकम् ।
अपि तत्र न वो मन्दो दुर्बुद्धिरपराद्धवान् ॥४॥
4. yacca duryodhanenedaṁ rājyaṁ bhuktamakaṇṭakam ,
api tatra na vo mando durbuddhiraparāddhavān.
4. yat ca duryodhanena idam rājyam bhuktam akaṇṭakam
api tatra na vaḥ mandaḥ durbuddhiḥ aparāddhavān
4. ca yat idam rājyam duryodhanena akaṇṭakam bhuktam
api tatra mandaḥ durbuddhiḥ vaḥ na aparāddhavān
4. And as for this kingdom, which Duryodhana enjoyed without obstacles – perhaps that dull-witted and foolish one did not commit any offense against you there?
तस्यापराधाद्दुर्बुद्धेरभिमानान्महीक्षिताम् ।
विमर्दः सुमहानासीदनयान्मत्कृतादथ ॥५॥
5. tasyāparādhāddurbuddherabhimānānmahīkṣitām ,
vimardaḥ sumahānāsīdanayānmatkṛtādatha.
5. tasya aparādhāt durbuddheḥ abhimānāt mahīkṣitām
vimardaḥ su mahān āsīt anayāt matkṛtāt atha
5. atha tasya aparādhāt,
durbuddheḥ mahīkṣitām abhimānāt,
ca matkṛtāt anayāt,
su mahān vimardaḥ āsīt
5. Thus, from his offense, from the foolish pride he held towards the kings, and from the great impropriety caused by me, a massive conflict arose.
तन्मया साधु वापीदं यदि वासाधु वै कृतम् ।
तद्वो हृदि न कर्तव्यं मामनुज्ञातुमर्हथ ॥६॥
6. tanmayā sādhu vāpīdaṁ yadi vāsādhu vai kṛtam ,
tadvo hṛdi na kartavyaṁ māmanujñātumarhatha.
6. tat mayā sādhu vā api idam yadi vā asādhu vai kṛtam
tat vaḥ hṛdi na kartavyaṃ mām anujñātum arhatha
6. mayā idam sādhu vā api yadi vā asādhu vai kṛtam
tat vaḥ hṛdi na kartavyaṃ mām anujñātum arhatha
6. Whether this deed was done well or badly by me, you should not hold it in your hearts. You ought to forgive me.
वृद्धोऽयं हतपुत्रोऽयं दुःखितोऽयं जनाधिपः ।
पूर्वराज्ञां च पुत्रोऽयमिति कृत्वानुजानत ॥७॥
7. vṛddho'yaṁ hataputro'yaṁ duḥkhito'yaṁ janādhipaḥ ,
pūrvarājñāṁ ca putro'yamiti kṛtvānujānata.
7. vṛddhaḥ ayam hataputraḥ ayam duḥkhitaḥ ayam janādhipaḥ
pūrvarājñām ca putraḥ ayam iti kṛtvā anujānata
7. ayam janādhipaḥ vṛddhaḥ ayam hataputraḥ ayam duḥkhitaḥ
ca ayam pūrvarājñām putraḥ iti kṛtvā anujānata
7. This lord of people is old, he has lost his sons, and he is distressed. Moreover, he is the son of previous kings. Considering this, you should forgive him.
इयं च कृपणा वृद्धा हतपुत्रा तपस्विनी ।
गान्धारी पुत्रशोकार्ता तुल्यं याचति वो मया ॥८॥
8. iyaṁ ca kṛpaṇā vṛddhā hataputrā tapasvinī ,
gāndhārī putraśokārtā tulyaṁ yācati vo mayā.
8. iyam ca kṛpaṇā vṛddhā hataputrā tapasvinī
gāndhārī putraśokārtā tulyaṃ yācati vaḥ mayā
8. ca iyam kṛpaṇā vṛddhā hataputrā tapasvinī
gāndhārī putraśokārtā mayā tulyaṃ vaḥ yācati
8. And this pitiable, old, son-less woman, the suffering Gandhari, afflicted by the grief for her sons, entreats you just as I do.
हतपुत्राविमौ वृद्धौ विदित्वा दुःखितौ तथा ।
अनुजानीत भद्रं वो व्रजावः शरणं च वः ॥९॥
9. hataputrāvimau vṛddhau viditvā duḥkhitau tathā ,
anujānīta bhadraṁ vo vrajāvaḥ śaraṇaṁ ca vaḥ.
9. hataputrau imau vṛddhau viditvā duḥkhitau tathā
anujānīta bhadraṃ vaḥ vrajāvaḥ śaraṇaṃ ca vaḥ
9. imau hataputrau vṛddhau tathā duḥkhitau viditvā
anujānīta vaḥ bhadraṃ ca vrajāvaḥ vaḥ śaraṇaṃ
9. Recognizing these two old individuals as having lost their sons and being greatly distressed, you should forgive them. May good fortune be upon you. We both seek refuge in you.
अयं च कौरवो राजा कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।
सर्वैर्भवद्भिर्द्रष्टव्यः समेषु विषमेषु च ।
न जातु विषमं चैव गमिष्यति कदाचन ॥१०॥
10. ayaṁ ca kauravo rājā kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
sarvairbhavadbhirdraṣṭavyaḥ sameṣu viṣameṣu ca ,
na jātu viṣamaṁ caiva gamiṣyati kadācana.
10. ayam ca kauravaḥ rājā kuntīputraḥ
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ sarvaiḥ bhavadbhiḥ
draṣṭavyaḥ sameṣu viṣameṣu ca na jātu
viṣamam ca eva gamiṣyati kadācana
10. And this Kuru king, Yudhishthira, son of Kunti, must be respected by all of you, both in favorable and adverse circumstances. He will never, indeed, go astray at any time.
चत्वारः सचिवा यस्य भ्रातरो विपुलौजसः ।
लोकपालोपमा ह्येते सर्वे धर्मार्थदर्शिनः ॥११॥
11. catvāraḥ sacivā yasya bhrātaro vipulaujasaḥ ,
lokapālopamā hyete sarve dharmārthadarśinaḥ.
11. catvāraḥ sacivāḥ yasya bhrātaraḥ vipula-ojasaḥ
lokapāla-upamāḥ hi ete sarve dharma-artha-darśinaḥ
11. yasya catvāraḥ vipula-ojasaḥ bhrātaraḥ sacivāḥ
ete sarve hi lokapāla-upamāḥ dharma-artha-darśinaḥ
11. Whose four mighty brothers serve as his ministers - all these are indeed comparable to the protectors of the world, discerning both (natural law) and its practical purpose.
ब्रह्मेव भगवानेष सर्वभूतजगत्पतिः ।
युधिष्ठिरो महातेजा भवतः पालयिष्यति ॥१२॥
12. brahmeva bhagavāneṣa sarvabhūtajagatpatiḥ ,
yudhiṣṭhiro mahātejā bhavataḥ pālayiṣyati.
12. brahma iva bhagavān eṣaḥ sarvabhūtajagatpatiḥ
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ mahātejāḥ bhavataḥ pālayiṣyati
12. eṣaḥ bhagavān sarvabhūtajagatpatiḥ mahātejāḥ
brahma iva yudhiṣṭhiraḥ bhavataḥ pālayiṣyati
12. This illustrious Yudhishthira, who is like (brahman) itself and is the Lord of all beings and the world, and possesses great radiance, will protect you all.
अवश्यमेव वक्तव्यमिति कृत्वा ब्रवीमि वः ।
एष न्यासो मया दत्तः सर्वेषां वो युधिष्ठिरः ।
भवन्तोऽस्य च वीरस्य न्यासभूता मया कृताः ॥१३॥
13. avaśyameva vaktavyamiti kṛtvā bravīmi vaḥ ,
eṣa nyāso mayā dattaḥ sarveṣāṁ vo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
bhavanto'sya ca vīrasya nyāsabhūtā mayā kṛtāḥ.
13. avaśyam eva vaktavyam iti kṛtvā
bravīmi vaḥ eṣaḥ nyāsaḥ mayā dattaḥ
sarveṣām vaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ bhavantaḥ
asya ca vīrasya nyāsabhūtāḥ mayā kṛtāḥ
13. iti avaśyam eva vaktavyam kṛtvā vaḥ
bravīmi eṣaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ mayā
sarveṣām vaḥ nyāsaḥ dattaḥ ca bhavantaḥ
asya vīrasya nyāsabhūtāḥ mayā kṛtāḥ
13. Considering that this must certainly be said, I speak to you: this Yudhishthira has been given by me as a trust for all of you. And you (all) have been made by me as a trust for this hero.
यद्येव तैः कृतं किंचिद्व्यलीकं वा सुतैर्मम ।
यद्यन्येन मदीयेन तदनुज्ञातुमर्हथ ॥१४॥
14. yadyeva taiḥ kṛtaṁ kiṁcidvyalīkaṁ vā sutairmama ,
yadyanyena madīyena tadanujñātumarhatha.
14. yadi eva taiḥ kṛtam kiñcit vyalīkam vā sutaiḥ
mama yadi anyena madīyena tat anujñātum arhatha
14. yadi eva kiñcit vyalīkam taiḥ kṛtam vā mama
sutaiḥ yadi anyena madīyena tat anujñātum arhatha
14. If any offense has indeed been committed by them (the Kauravas), or by my sons, or by any other person belonging to me, you (all) ought to forgive that.
भवद्भिर्हि न मे मन्युः कृतपूर्वः कथंचन ।
अत्यन्तगुरुभक्तानामेषोऽञ्जलिरिदं नमः ॥१५॥
15. bhavadbhirhi na me manyuḥ kṛtapūrvaḥ kathaṁcana ,
atyantagurubhaktānāmeṣo'ñjaliridaṁ namaḥ.
15. bhavadbhiḥ hi na me manyuḥ kṛtapūrvaḥ kathañcana
atyantagurubhaktānām eṣaḥ añjaliḥ idam namaḥ
15. hi bhavadbhiḥ me manyuḥ kathañcana na kṛtapūrvaḥ
eṣaḥ añjaliḥ idam atyantagurubhaktānām namaḥ
15. For indeed, you (all) have never caused me any anger in any way. This is a gesture of folded hands and this is a salutation to those who are extremely devoted to their spiritual preceptors (guru).
तेषामस्थिरबुद्धीनां लुब्धानां कामचारिणाम् ।
कृते याचामि वः सर्वान्गान्धारीसहितोऽनघाः ॥१६॥
16. teṣāmasthirabuddhīnāṁ lubdhānāṁ kāmacāriṇām ,
kṛte yācāmi vaḥ sarvāngāndhārīsahito'naghāḥ.
16. teṣām asthirabuddhīnām lubdhānām kāmacāriṇām
kṛte yācāmi vaḥ sarvān gāndhārisahitaḥ anaghāḥ
16. anaghāḥ gāndhārisahitaḥ teṣām asthirabuddhīnām
lubdhānām kāmacāriṇām kṛte vaḥ sarvān yācāmi
16. O sinless ones, Gāndhārī and I implore all of you on behalf of those with unsteady intellects, the greedy, and those who act according to their own will.
इत्युक्तास्तेन ते राज्ञा पौरजानपदा जनाः ।
नोचुर्बाष्पकलाः किंचिद्वीक्षां चक्रुः परस्परम् ॥१७॥
17. ityuktāstena te rājñā paurajānapadā janāḥ ,
nocurbāṣpakalāḥ kiṁcidvīkṣāṁ cakruḥ parasparam.
17. iti uktāḥ tena te rājñā paurajānapadāḥ janāḥ na
ūcuḥ bāṣpakalāḥ kiṃcit vīkṣām cakruḥ parasparam
17. tena rājñā iti uktāḥ te paurajānapadāḥ janāḥ
bāṣpakalāḥ kiṃcit na ūcuḥ parasparam vīkṣām cakruḥ
17. Thus addressed by the king, those citizens and country folk, with their voices choked with tears, said nothing. They merely looked at each other.
