Vaiśampāyana said: Thus, the Dānavas, Rākṣasas, Nāgas, hyenas, bears, other forest dwellers, elephants in rut, tigers, lions, and maned lions dwelling in Khāṇḍava were terrified by the falling mountain pieces.

Deer, buffaloes, and hundreds of birds, as well as other types of creatures, became agitated and scattered.

Observing that forest fire and the two Krishnas (Krishna and Arjuna) with their weapons raised, they became, as it were, terrified by the sound of the raging destruction.

4.
Janardana (Krishna) released his discus, resplendent with his own power. By its action, all those contemptible creatures, including the daityas and night-wanderers (rākṣasas), were cut down by hundreds and instantly fell into the fire.

There, the rākṣasas, torn apart by Krishna's discus and drenched in fat and blood, appeared like clouds in the evening twilight.

O Bhārata, the descendant of Vṛṣṇi (Kṛṣṇa) moves about there, slaying thousands of goblins (piśācas), birds, serpents (nāgas), and animals, just like all-consuming time.

Indeed, that disk (cakra) of Kṛṣṇa, the slayer of foes, when thrown repeatedly, having destroyed countless beings, returns to his hand again and again.

O Bhārata, as he (Kṛṣṇa) was thus slaying all beings, his form, that of the Self (ātman) of all creatures, became exceedingly fierce at that time.

And among all the assembled gods and dānavas, no one could become a conqueror of Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna (Pāṇḍava) in battle.

When the gods were unable to protect that forest or extinguish (the fire) due to the power of those two (Arjuna and Krishna), they then turned away.

And Indra (Śatakratu), having seen the hosts of deities turned away, remained pleased, praising Krishna and Arjuna (Pāṇḍava).

When the gods had retreated, a disembodied voice (aśarīriṇī vāc), exceedingly deep-sounding, addressed Indra (Śatakratu).

Your friend, Takṣaka, the best of serpents (pannagottama), is not present here; indeed, he has gone to Kurukṣetra at the time of the burning of the Khāṇḍava forest.

O Indra, you are not capable of conquering Vāsudeva and Arjuna, who stand arrayed in this battle. Understand this word of mine.

16.
These two, the ancient and supreme sages (ṛṣisattama), are unconquerable (durādharṣa) and invincible (ajita) in battle. They cannot be defeated, even in all worlds.

Therefore, O Vāsava, you should depart from here with the gods, and witness this fated destruction of the Khāṇḍava forest.

Having heard these words and recognizing their truth, the lord of the immortals (Indra) then abandoned his anger and indignation, and departed for heaven.

Then, upon seeing the king of the gods (Indra) departing along with the other deities, the two heroes, Vāsudeva (Krishna) and Arjuna, let out a lion's roar.

And they found no comfort, neither on the riverbanks nor in the difficult terrains. Furthermore, anguish also arose in the abodes of the ancestors and gods.

Thousands of distressed beings and hosts of ghosts (bhūta) made a great uproar. Elephants roared, and likewise, wild animals and birds cried out. By that sound, the fish dwelling in the Ganges and the ocean were terrified.
