भीम उवाच ।
पाण्डवो भीमसेनोऽहं धर्मपुत्रादनन्तरः ।
विशालां बदरीं प्राप्तो भ्रातृभिः सह राक्षसाः ॥१॥
1. bhīma uvāca ,
pāṇḍavo bhīmaseno'haṁ dharmaputrādanantaraḥ ,
viśālāṁ badarīṁ prāpto bhrātṛbhiḥ saha rākṣasāḥ.

1. Bhīma said: "O Rākṣasas, I am Bhīmasena, a Pāṇḍava, the one who comes immediately after the son of Dharma (dharma-putra). I have arrived at the great Badarī with my brothers."
अपश्यत्तत्र पाञ्चाली सौगन्धिकमनुत्तमम् ।
अनिलोढमितो नूनं सा बहूनि परीप्सति ॥२॥
2. apaśyattatra pāñcālī saugandhikamanuttamam ,
aniloḍhamito nūnaṁ sā bahūni parīpsati.
2. apaśyat tatra pāñcālī saugandhikam anuttamam
aniloḍham itaḥ nūnam sā bahūni parīpsati
2. There, Draupadi saw an unequalled, fragrant flower. She surely desired to obtain many such flowers, which were carried by the wind from this direction.
तस्या मामनवद्याङ्ग्या धर्मपत्न्याः प्रिये स्थितम् ।
पुष्पाहारमिह प्राप्तं निबोधत निशाचराः ॥३॥
3. tasyā māmanavadyāṅgyā dharmapatnyāḥ priye sthitam ,
puṣpāhāramiha prāptaṁ nibodhata niśācarāḥ.
3. tasyāḥ mām anavadyāṅgyāḥ dharmapatnyāḥ priye
sthitam puṣpāhāram iha prāptam nibodhata niśācarāḥ
3. O night-wanderers, understand that I have arrived here, seeking flowers for the pleasure of my beloved, my lawful wife (dharma-patnī), whose limbs are faultless.
राक्षसा ऊचुः ।
आक्रीडोऽयं कुबेरस्य दयितः पुरुषर्षभ ।
नेह शक्यं मनुष्येण विहर्तुं मर्त्यधर्मिणा ॥४॥
4. rākṣasā ūcuḥ ,
ākrīḍo'yaṁ kuberasya dayitaḥ puruṣarṣabha ,
neha śakyaṁ manuṣyeṇa vihartuṁ martyadharmiṇā.
4. rākṣasāḥ ūcuḥ ākīḍaḥ ayam kuberasya dayitaḥ puruṣarṣabha
na iha śakyam manuṣyeṇa vihartum martyadharmiṇā
4. The Rākṣasas said: "This is Kubera's beloved pleasure-garden, O best of men (puruṣa). It is not possible for a mortal human, whose very nature (dharma) is mortality, to sport here."
देवर्षयस्तथा यक्षा देवाश्चात्र वृकोदर ।
आमन्त्र्य यक्षप्रवरं पिबन्ति विहरन्ति च ।
गन्धर्वाप्सरसश्चैव विहरन्त्यत्र पाण्डव ॥५॥
5. devarṣayastathā yakṣā devāścātra vṛkodara ,
āmantrya yakṣapravaraṁ pibanti viharanti ca ,
gandharvāpsarasaścaiva viharantyatra pāṇḍava.
5. devarṣayaḥ tathā yakṣāḥ devāḥ ca
atra vṛkodara āmantrya yakṣapravaram
pibanti viharanti ca gandharvāpsarasaḥ
ca eva viharanti atra pāṇḍava
5. "Divine sages, as well as Yakṣas and gods, O Vṛkodara, having invited the chief of the Yakṣas, drink and sport here. Indeed, Gandharvas and Apsarases also sport here, O son of Pāṇḍu."
अन्यायेनेह यः कश्चिदवमन्य धनेश्वरम् ।
विहर्तुमिच्छेद्दुर्वृत्तः स विनश्येदसंशयम् ॥६॥
6. anyāyeneha yaḥ kaścidavamanya dhaneśvaram ,
vihartumiccheddurvṛttaḥ sa vinaśyedasaṁśayam.
6. anyāyena iha yaḥ kaścit avamanya dhaneśvaram
vihartum icchet durvṛttaḥ saḥ vinaśyet asaṃśayam
6. Anyone who, being ill-behaved, desires to act freely here by unjustly disrespecting the lord of wealth (Kubera), that person will undoubtedly perish.
तमनादृत्य पद्मानि जिहीर्षसि बलादितः ।
धर्मराजस्य चात्मानं ब्रवीषि भ्रातरं कथम् ॥७॥
7. tamanādṛtya padmāni jihīrṣasi balāditaḥ ,
dharmarājasya cātmānaṁ bravīṣi bhrātaraṁ katham.
7. tam anādṛtya padmāni jihīrṣasi balāt itaḥ
dharmarājasya ca ātmānam bravīṣi bhrātaram katham
7. Disregarding him (Kubera), you wish to seize lotuses by force from here. And how do you call yourself the brother of the king of natural law (dharma) (Yudhiṣṭhira)?
भीम उवाच ।
राक्षसास्तं न पश्यामि धनेश्वरमिहान्तिके ।
दृष्ट्वापि च महाराजं नाहं याचितुमुत्सहे ॥८॥
8. bhīma uvāca ,
rākṣasāstaṁ na paśyāmi dhaneśvaramihāntike ,
dṛṣṭvāpi ca mahārājaṁ nāhaṁ yācitumutsahe.
8. bhīmaḥ uvāca rākṣasāḥ tam na paśyāmi dhaneśvaram iha
antike dṛṣṭvā api ca mahārājam na aham yācitum utsahe
8. Bhīma said: 'O Rākṣasas, I do not see the lord of wealth (Kubera) here nearby. And even if I were to see the great king, I would not dare to beg.'
न हि याचन्ति राजान एष धर्मः सनातनः ।
न चाहं हातुमिच्छामि क्षात्रधर्मं कथंचन ॥९॥
9. na hi yācanti rājāna eṣa dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ ,
na cāhaṁ hātumicchāmi kṣātradharmaṁ kathaṁcana.
9. na hi yācanti rājānaḥ eṣaḥ dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ na
ca aham hātum icchāmi kṣātradharmam kathaṃcana
9. Indeed, kings do not beg; this is an eternal natural law (dharma). And I certainly do not wish to abandon the warrior's duty (kṣātradharma) by any means.
इयं च नलिनी रम्या जाता पर्वतनिर्झरे ।
नेयं भवनमासाद्य कुबेरस्य महात्मनः ॥१०॥
10. iyaṁ ca nalinī ramyā jātā parvatanirjhare ,
neyaṁ bhavanamāsādya kuberasya mahātmanaḥ.
10. iyam ca nalinī ramyā jātā parvatanirjhare na
iyam bhavanam āsādya kuberasya mahātmanaḥ
10. This beautiful lotus pond originated in a mountain spring; it was not acquired from the palace of the magnanimous Kubera.
तुल्या हि सर्वभूतानामियं वैश्रवणस्य च ।
एवंगतेषु द्रव्येषु कः कं याचितुमर्हति ॥११॥
11. tulyā hi sarvabhūtānāmiyaṁ vaiśravaṇasya ca ,
evaṁgateṣu dravyeṣu kaḥ kaṁ yācitumarhati.
11. tulyā hi sarvabhūtānām iyam vaiśravaṇasya ca
evamgateṣu dravyeṣu kaḥ kam yācitum arhati
11. Indeed, this (lotus pond) is equally accessible to all beings, just as it is to Vaiśravaṇa (Kubera). When wealth is distributed in such a manner, who has the right to beg from whom?
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वा राक्षसान्सर्वान्भीमसेनो व्यगाहत ।
ततः स राक्षसैर्वाचा प्रतिषिद्धः प्रतापवान् ।
मा मैवमिति सक्रोधैर्भर्त्सयद्भिः समन्ततः ॥१२॥
12. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
ityuktvā rākṣasānsarvānbhīmaseno vyagāhata ,
tataḥ sa rākṣasairvācā pratiṣiddhaḥ pratāpavān ,
mā maivamiti sakrodhairbhartsayadbhiḥ samantataḥ.
12. vaiśampāyana uvāca iti uktvā rākṣasān sarvān
bhīmasenaḥ vi agāhata tataḥ saḥ rākṣasaiḥ
vācā pratiṣiddhaḥ pratāpavān mā mā
evam iti sakrodhaiḥ bhartsayadbhīḥ samantataḥ
12. Vaiśampāyana said: Having thus addressed all the Rākṣasas, Bhīmasena plunged forth. Then, that mighty one was verbally admonished by the Rākṣasas, who, full of rage, threatened him from all sides with words like, 'Don't! Don't do this!'
कदर्थीकृत्य तु स तान्राक्षसान्भीमविक्रमः ।
व्यगाहत महातेजास्ते तं सर्वे न्यवारयन् ॥१३॥
13. kadarthīkṛtya tu sa tānrākṣasānbhīmavikramaḥ ,
vyagāhata mahātejāste taṁ sarve nyavārayan.
13. kadarthīkṛtya tu saḥ tān rākṣasān bhīmavikramaḥ
vi agāhata mahātejāḥ te tam sarve ni avārayan
13. But he, Bhīma of formidable might, having ignored those Rākṣasas, the greatly energetic one plunged in. All of them attempted to obstruct him.
गृह्णीत बध्नीत निकृन्ततेमं पचाम खादाम च भीमसेनम् ।
क्रुद्धा ब्रुवन्तोऽनुययुर्द्रुतं ते शस्त्राणि चोद्यम्य विवृत्तनेत्राः ॥१४॥
14. gṛhṇīta badhnīta nikṛntatemaṁ; pacāma khādāma ca bhīmasenam ,
kruddhā bruvanto'nuyayurdrutaṁ te; śastrāṇi codyamya vivṛttanetrāḥ.
14. gṛhṇīta badhnīta nikṛntata imam
pacāma khādāma ca bhīmasenam kruddhāḥ
bruvantaḥ anuyayuḥ drutam te
śastrāṇi ca udyamya vivṛttanetrāḥ
14. “Seize him, bind him, cut him down! Let's cook and eat this Bhīmasena!” Saying this, they, enraged and with rolling eyes, swiftly followed, raising their weapons.
ततः स गुर्वीं यमदण्डकल्पां महागदां काञ्चनपट्टनद्धाम् ।
प्रगृह्य तानभ्यपतत्तरस्वी ततोऽब्रवीत्तिष्ठत तिष्ठतेति ॥१५॥
15. tataḥ sa gurvīṁ yamadaṇḍakalpāṁ; mahāgadāṁ kāñcanapaṭṭanaddhām ,
pragṛhya tānabhyapatattarasvī; tato'bravīttiṣṭhata tiṣṭhateti.
15. tataḥ saḥ gurvīm yamadaṇḍakalpām
mahāgadām kāñcanapaṭṭanaddhām
pragṛhya tān abhyapatat tarasvī
tataḥ abravīt tiṣṭhata tiṣṭhata iti
15. Then, that mighty one (Bhīmasena), taking up his heavy, great mace - which resembled the staff of Yama and was bound with gold plates - rushed towards them. Then he exclaimed, "Stop! Stop!"
ते तं तदा तोमरपट्टिशाद्यैर्व्याविध्य शस्त्रैः सहसाभिपेतुः ।
जिघांसवः क्रोधवशाः सुभीमा भीमं समन्तात्परिवव्रुरुग्राः ॥१६॥
16. te taṁ tadā tomarapaṭṭiśādyai;rvyāvidhya śastraiḥ sahasābhipetuḥ ,
jighāṁsavaḥ krodhavaśāḥ subhīmā; bhīmaṁ samantātparivavrurugrāḥ.
16. te tam tadā tomarapaṭṭiśādyaiḥ
vyāvidhya śastraiḥ sahasā abhipeyuḥ
jighāṃsavaḥ krodhavaśāḥ subhīmāḥ
bhīmam samantāt parivavruḥ ugrāḥ
16. Then they, filled with the desire to kill, overcome by rage, and very terrible and fierce, struck him with spears, axes, and other weapons. Suddenly, they rushed towards Bhīmasena and surrounded him from all sides.
वातेन कुन्त्यां बलवान्स जातः शूरस्तरस्वी द्विषतां निहन्ता ।
सत्ये च धर्मे च रतः सदैव पराक्रमे शत्रुभिरप्रधृष्यः ॥१७॥
17. vātena kuntyāṁ balavānsa jātaḥ; śūrastarasvī dviṣatāṁ nihantā ,
satye ca dharme ca rataḥ sadaiva; parākrame śatrubhirapradhṛṣyaḥ.
17. vātena kuntyām balavān saḥ jātaḥ
śūraḥ tarasvī dviṣatām nihantā
satye ca dharme ca rataḥ sadaiva
parākrame śatrubhiḥ apradhṛṣyaḥ
17. He (Bhīmasena), born to Kuntī by Vāyu, was powerful, valiant, mighty, and a destroyer of enemies. He was always devoted to truth and natural law (dharma), and unconquerable by foes in his prowess.
तेषां स मार्गान्विविधान्महात्मा निहत्य शस्त्राणि च शात्रवाणाम् ।
यथाप्रवीरान्निजघान वीरः परःशतान्पुष्करिणीसमीपे ॥१८॥
18. teṣāṁ sa mārgānvividhānmahātmā; nihatya śastrāṇi ca śātravāṇām ,
yathāpravīrānnijaghāna vīraḥ; paraḥśatānpuṣkariṇīsamīpe.
18. teṣām saḥ mārgān vividhān mahātmā
nihatya śastrāṇi ca śātravāṇām
yathāpravīrān nijaghāna
vīraḥ paraḥśatān puṣkariṇīsamīpe
18. The great-souled hero (mahātmā), having destroyed their various strategies and the enemies' weapons, slew hundreds of their principal warriors near the lotus pond.
ते तस्य वीर्यं च बलं च दृष्ट्वा विद्याबलं बाहुबलं तथैव ।
अशक्नुवन्तः सहिताः समन्ताद्धतप्रवीराः सहसा निवृत्ताः ॥१९॥
19. te tasya vīryaṁ ca balaṁ ca dṛṣṭvā; vidyābalaṁ bāhubalaṁ tathaiva ,
aśaknuvantaḥ sahitāḥ samantā;ddhatapravīrāḥ sahasā nivṛttāḥ.
19. te tasya vīryam ca balam ca
dṛṣṭvā vidyābalam bāhubalam tathaiva
aśaknuvantaḥ sahitāḥ samantāt
hatapravīrāḥ sahasā nivṛttāḥ
19. Having witnessed his valor and strength, and likewise his power of knowledge and the might of his arms, they found themselves unable to resist. With their chief warriors (pravīra) slain, they suddenly retreated together from all directions.
विदीर्यमाणास्तत एव तूर्णमाकाशमास्थाय विमूढसंज्ञाः ।
कैलासशृङ्गाण्यभिदुद्रुवुस्ते भीमार्दिताः क्रोधवशाः प्रभग्नाः ॥२०॥
20. vidīryamāṇāstata eva tūrṇa;mākāśamāsthāya vimūḍhasaṁjñāḥ ,
kailāsaśṛṅgāṇyabhidudruvuste; bhīmārditāḥ krodhavaśāḥ prabhagnāḥ.
20. vidīryamāṇāḥ tataḥ eva tūrṇam
ākāśam āsthāya vimūḍhasaṃjñāḥ
kailāsaśṛṅgāṇi abhidudruvuḥ te
bhīmārditāḥ krodhavaśāḥ prabhagnāḥ
20. Scattering quickly from that place, their senses bewildered, they took to the sky. Afflicted by fear, overwhelmed by rage, and utterly routed, they rushed towards the peaks of Kailasa.
स शक्रवद्दानवदैत्यसंघान्विक्रम्य जित्वा च रणेऽरिसंघान् ।
विगाह्य तां पुष्करिणीं जितारिः कामाय जग्राह ततोऽम्बुजानि ॥२१॥
21. sa śakravaddānavadaityasaṁghā;nvikramya jitvā ca raṇe'risaṁghān ,
vigāhya tāṁ puṣkariṇīṁ jitāriḥ; kāmāya jagrāha tato'mbujāni.
21. saḥ śakravat dānavadaityasaṃghān
vikramya jitvā ca raṇe arisaṃghān
vigāhya tām puṣkariṇīm
jitāriḥ kāmāya jagrāha tataḥ ambujāni
21. Just like Indra (Śakra), he, having overcome and conquered the hosts of Danavas and Daityas, and the hordes of enemies in battle, and having subdued his foes, then entered that lotus pond and gathered lotuses for his pleasure.
ततः स पीत्वामृतकल्पमम्भो भूयो बभूवोत्तमवीर्यतेजाः ।
उत्पाट्य जग्राह ततोऽम्बुजानि सौगन्धिकान्युत्तमगन्धवन्ति ॥२२॥
22. tataḥ sa pītvāmṛtakalpamambho; bhūyo babhūvottamavīryatejāḥ ,
utpāṭya jagrāha tato'mbujāni; saugandhikānyuttamagandhavanti.
22. tataḥ saḥ pītvā amṛtakalpam ambhaḥ
bhūyaḥ babhūva uttamavīryatejāḥ
utpāṭya jagrāha tataḥ ambujāni
saugandhikāni uttamagandhavanti
22. Then, after drinking the nectar-like water, he again became full of excellent strength and splendor. From there, he uprooted and took the highly fragrant lotuses, which possessed an excellent scent.
ततस्तु ते क्रोधवशाः समेत्य धनेश्वरं भीमबलप्रणुन्नाः ।
भीमस्य वीर्यं च बलं च संख्ये यथावदाचख्युरतीव दीनाः ॥२३॥
23. tatastu te krodhavaśāḥ sametya; dhaneśvaraṁ bhīmabalapraṇunnāḥ ,
bhīmasya vīryaṁ ca balaṁ ca saṁkhye; yathāvadācakhyuratīva dīnāḥ.
23. tataḥ tu te krodhavaśāḥ sametya
dhaneśvaram bhīmabalapraṇunnāḥ
bhīmasya vīryam ca balam ca saṃkhye
yathāvat ācakhyuḥ atīva dīnāḥ
23. But then, they (the Rākṣasas), overcome by anger and impelled by Bhīma's immense strength, approached Kubera, the lord of wealth. Exceedingly distressed, they accurately reported Bhīma's valor and might in battle.
तेषां वचस्तत्तु निशम्य देवः प्रहस्य रक्षांशि ततोऽभ्युवाच ।
गृह्णातु भीमो जलजानि कामं कृष्णानिमित्तं विदितं ममैतत् ॥२४॥
24. teṣāṁ vacastattu niśamya devaḥ; prahasya rakṣāṁśi tato'bhyuvāca ,
gṛhṇātu bhīmo jalajāni kāmaṁ; kṛṣṇānimittaṁ viditaṁ mamaitat.
24. teṣām vacaḥ tat tu niśamya devaḥ
prahasya rakṣāṃśi tataḥ abhyuvāca
gṛhṇātu bhīmaḥ jalajāni kāmam
kṛṣṇānimittam viditam mama etat
24. But then, having heard their words, the god (Kubera) laughed and then spoke to the Rākṣasas: "Let Bhīma take the lotuses freely for Draupadī's (Kṛṣṇā) sake. I already know this."
ततोऽभ्यनुज्ञाय धनेश्वरं ते जग्मुः कुरूणां प्रवरं विरोषाः ।
भीमं च तस्यां ददृशुर्नलिन्यां यथोपजोषं विहरन्तमेकम् ॥२५॥
25. tato'bhyanujñāya dhaneśvaraṁ te; jagmuḥ kurūṇāṁ pravaraṁ viroṣāḥ ,
bhīmaṁ ca tasyāṁ dadṛśurnalinyāṁ; yathopajoṣaṁ viharantamekam.
25. tataḥ abhyanuñjāya dhaneśvaram te
jagmuḥ kurūṇām pravaram viroṣāḥ
bhīmam ca tasyām dadṛśuḥ nalinyām
yathopajoṣam viharantam ekam
25. Then, having been permitted by Kubera, the lord of wealth, they (the Rākṣasas), now free from anger, departed. They then saw Bhīma, the foremost among the Kurus, sporting alone in that lotus pond according to his pleasure.
