साङ्गा वेदा यथान्यायं येनाधीता महात्मना ।
यस्मिन्साक्षाद्धनुर्वेदो ह्रीनिषेधे प्रतिष्ठितः ॥१॥

sāṅgā vedā yathānyāyaṁ yenādhītā mahātmanā ,

1. Dhṛtarāṣṭra spoke: "By which great soul (mahātmā) the Vedas, along with their auxiliary branches, were properly studied, and in whom the science of archery (dhanurveda) is directly and firmly established, having overcome all inhibition."
तस्मिन्नाक्रुश्यति द्रोणे महर्षितनये तदा ।
नीचात्मना नृशंसेन क्षुद्रेण गुरुघातिना ॥२॥
2. tasminnākruśyati droṇe maharṣitanaye tadā ,
nīcātmanā nṛśaṁsena kṣudreṇa gurughātinā.
2. tasmin ākruśyati droṇe maharṣitanaye tadā
nīcātmanā nṛśaṃsena kṣudreṇa gurughātinā
2. tadā tasmin maharṣitanaye droṇe nīcātmanā

2. At that time, when Droṇa, the son of the great sage, was being reviled by that vile-minded, cruel, contemptible, and guru-slaying person.
यस्य प्रसादात्कर्माणि कुर्वन्ति पुरुषर्षभाः ।
अमानुषाणि संग्रामे देवैरसुकराणि च ॥३॥
3. yasya prasādātkarmāṇi kurvanti puruṣarṣabhāḥ ,
amānuṣāṇi saṁgrāme devairasukarāṇi ca.
3. yasya prasādāt karmāṇi kurvanti puruṣarṣabhāḥ
amānuṣāṇi saṃgrāme devaiḥ asukarāṇi ca
3. yasya prasādāt puruṣarṣabhāḥ saṃgrāme
amānuṣāṇi devaiḥ ca asukarāṇi karmāṇi kurvanti
3. By whose grace the foremost of men perform superhuman deeds in battle, which are difficult even for the gods to accomplish.
तस्मिन्नाक्रुश्यति द्रोणे समक्षं पापकर्मिणः ।
नामर्षं तत्र कुर्वन्ति धिक्क्षत्रं धिगमर्षितम् ॥४॥
4. tasminnākruśyati droṇe samakṣaṁ pāpakarmiṇaḥ ,
nāmarṣaṁ tatra kurvanti dhikkṣatraṁ dhigamarṣitam.
4. tasmin ākruśyati droṇe samakṣam pāpakarmaṇaḥ na
amarṣam tatra kurvanti dhik kṣatram dhik amarṣitam
4. tasmin droṇe pāpakarmaṇaḥ samakṣaṃ ākruśyati (sati) tatra
(janāḥ) amarṣaṃ na kurvanti kṣatraṃ dhik amarṣitam dhik
4. When Droṇa is being reviled in the presence of that evildoer, they do not show any indignation there. Fie upon the warrior class (kṣatra)! Fie upon the unindignant one!
पार्थाः सर्वे च राजानः पृथिव्यां ये धनुर्धराः ।
श्रुत्वा किमाहुः पाञ्चाल्यं तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय ॥५॥
5. pārthāḥ sarve ca rājānaḥ pṛthivyāṁ ye dhanurdharāḥ ,
śrutvā kimāhuḥ pāñcālyaṁ tanmamācakṣva saṁjaya.
5. pārthāḥ sarve ca rājānaḥ pṛthivyām ye dhanurdharāḥ
śrutvā kim āhuḥ pāñcālyam tat mama ācakṣva saṃjaya
5. saṃjaya tat mama ācakṣva pṛthivyām ye pārthāḥ ca

5. Sanjaya, tell me what the sons of Pṛthā (Pārtha) and all the other kings and archers on earth said when they heard the prince of Pāñcāla (Dhṛṣṭadyumna).
संजय उवाच ।
श्रुत्वा द्रुपदपुत्रस्य ता वाचः क्रूरकर्मणः ।
तूष्णीं बभूवू राजानः सर्व एव विशां पते ॥६॥
6. saṁjaya uvāca ,
śrutvā drupadaputrasya tā vācaḥ krūrakarmaṇaḥ ,
tūṣṇīṁ babhūvū rājānaḥ sarva eva viśāṁ pate.
6. saṃjaya uvāca | śrutvā drupadaputrasya tāḥ vācaḥ
krūrakarmaṇaḥ | tūṣṇīm babhūvuḥ rājānaḥ sarve eva viśām pate
6. saṃjaya uvāca viśām pate,
krūrakarmaṇaḥ drupadaputrasya tāḥ vācaḥ śrutvā,
sarve rājānaḥ eva tūṣṇīm babhūvuḥ
6. Sanjaya said: O lord of the people, after hearing those words of Drupada's son, the cruel-doer, all the kings indeed became silent.
अर्जुनस्तु कटाक्षेण जिह्मं प्रेक्ष्य च पार्षतम् ।
सबाष्पमभिनिःश्वस्य धिग्धिग्धिगिति चाब्रवीत् ॥७॥
7. arjunastu kaṭākṣeṇa jihmaṁ prekṣya ca pārṣatam ,
sabāṣpamabhiniḥśvasya dhigdhigdhigiti cābravīt.
7. arjunaḥ tu kaṭākṣeṇa jihmam prekṣya ca pārṣatam |
sabāṣpam abhiniḥśvasya dhik dhik dhik iti ca abravīt
7. tu arjunaḥ kaṭākṣeṇa jihmam pārṣatam prekṣya ca sabāṣpam abhiniḥśvasya,
dhik dhik dhik iti ca abravīt
7. But Arjuna, having looked askance with a side-glance at the son of Pṛṣata (Dhṛṣṭadyumna), and having sighed with tears, said, 'Fie! Fie! Fie!'
युधिष्ठिरश्च भीमश्च यमौ कृष्णस्तथापरे ।
आसन्सुव्रीडिता राजन्सात्यकिरिदमब्रवीत् ॥८॥
8. yudhiṣṭhiraśca bhīmaśca yamau kṛṣṇastathāpare ,
āsansuvrīḍitā rājansātyakiridamabravīt.
8. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ca bhīmaḥ ca yamau kṛṣṇaḥ tathā apare
| āsan suvrīḍitāḥ rājan sātyakiḥ idam abravīt
8. rājan,
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ca bhīmaḥ ca yamau kṛṣṇaḥ tathā apare suvrīḍitāḥ āsan sātyakiḥ idam abravīt
8. Yudhiṣṭhira, Bhīma, the twins (Nakula and Sahadeva), Kṛṣṇa, and other kings, O King, were deeply ashamed. Sātyaki then said this.
नेहास्ति पुरुषः कश्चिद्य इमं पापपूरुषम् ।
भाषमाणमकल्याणं शीघ्रं हन्यान्नराधमम् ॥९॥
9. nehāsti puruṣaḥ kaścidya imaṁ pāpapūruṣam ,
bhāṣamāṇamakalyāṇaṁ śīghraṁ hanyānnarādhamam.
9. na iha asti puruṣaḥ kaścit yaḥ imam pāpa-pūruṣam
bhāṣamāṇam akalyāṇam śīghram hanyāt nara-adhamam
9. iha kaścit puruṣaḥ na asti yaḥ akalyāṇam bhāṣamāṇam
imam pāpa-pūruṣam nara-adhamam śīghram hanyāt
9. Is there truly no man here who would swiftly kill this wicked individual, this lowest among men, who speaks such inauspicious words?
कथं च शतधा जिह्वा न ते मूर्धा च दीर्यते ।
गुरुमाक्रोशतः क्षुद्र न चाधर्मेण पात्यसे ॥१०॥
10. kathaṁ ca śatadhā jihvā na te mūrdhā ca dīryate ,
gurumākrośataḥ kṣudra na cādharmeṇa pātyase.
10. katham ca śatadhā jihvā na te mūrdhā ca dīryate
gurum ākrośataḥ kṣudra na ca adharmeṇa pātyase
10. kṣudra,
gurum ākrośataḥ te jihvā śatadhā na dīryate ca mūrdhā ca (na dīryate) katham? ca adharmeṇa (tvam) na pātyase katham?
10. O wretch, how is it that your tongue does not split into a hundred pieces, and your head does not burst, while you revile your preceptor (guru)? And why are you not cast down by unrighteousness (adharma)?
याप्यस्त्वमसि पार्थैश्च सर्वैश्चान्धकवृष्णिभिः ।
यत्कर्म कलुषं कृत्वा श्लाघसे जनसंसदि ॥११॥
11. yāpyastvamasi pārthaiśca sarvaiścāndhakavṛṣṇibhiḥ ,
yatkarma kaluṣaṁ kṛtvā ślāghase janasaṁsadi.
11. yāpyaḥ tvam asi pārthaiḥ ca sarvaiḥ ca andhaka-vṛṣṇibhiḥ
yat karma kaluṣam kṛtvā ślāghase jana-saṃsadi
11. yat kaluṣam karma kṛtvā jana-saṃsadi ślāghase,
(ataḥ) tvam pārthaiḥ ca sarvaiḥ andhaka-vṛṣṇibhiḥ ca yāpyaḥ asi.
11. You are to be shunned (yāpya) by the Pārthas and by all the Andhakas and Vṛṣṇis, because having performed such a foul deed (karma), you boast about it in the assembly of people.
अकार्यं तादृशं कृत्वा पुनरेव गुरुं क्षिपन् ।
वध्यस्त्वं न त्वयार्थोऽस्ति मुहूर्तमपि जीवता ॥१२॥
12. akāryaṁ tādṛśaṁ kṛtvā punareva guruṁ kṣipan ,
vadhyastvaṁ na tvayārtho'sti muhūrtamapi jīvatā.
12. akāryam tādṛśam kṛtvā punaḥ eva gurum kṣipan vadhyaḥ
tvam na tvayā arthaḥ asti muhūrtam api jīvatā
12. tādṛśam akāryam kṛtvā,
punaḥ eva gurum kṣipan tvam vadhyaḥ (asi).
jīvatā tvayā muhūrtam api arthaḥ na asti.
12. Having performed such an improper act (akārya), and then again insulting your preceptor (guru), you deserve to be killed. There is no purpose (artha) in you living even for a moment.
कस्त्वेतद्व्यवसेदार्यस्त्वदन्यः पुरुषाधमः ।
निगृह्य केशेषु वधं गुरोर्धर्मात्मनः सतः ॥१३॥
13. kastvetadvyavasedāryastvadanyaḥ puruṣādhamaḥ ,
nigṛhya keśeṣu vadhaṁ gurordharmātmanaḥ sataḥ.
13. kaḥ tu etat vyavased āryaḥ tvat anyaḥ puruṣādhamaḥ
nigṛhya keśeṣu vadham guroḥ dharmātmanaḥ sataḥ
13. āryaḥ kaḥ tu puruṣādhamaḥ tvat anyaḥ dharmātmanaḥ
sataḥ guroḥ keśeṣu nigṛhya etat vadham vyavased
13. Who among noble persons, other than you, the vilest of men, would undertake such an act as seizing by the hair and killing a righteous and good teacher (guru) whose intrinsic nature (dharma) is virtue?
सप्तावरे तथा पूर्वे बान्धवास्ते निपातिताः ।
यशसा च परित्यक्तास्त्वां प्राप्य कुलपांसनम् ॥१४॥
14. saptāvare tathā pūrve bāndhavāste nipātitāḥ ,
yaśasā ca parityaktāstvāṁ prāpya kulapāṁsanam.
14. sapta avare tathā pūrve bāndhavāḥ te nipātitāḥ
yaśasā ca parityaktāḥ tvām prāpya kulapāṃsanam
14. sapta avare tathā pūrve te bāndhavāḥ nipātitāḥ
ca kulapāṃsanam tvām prāpya yaśasā parityaktāḥ
14. Seven generations of your ancestors and also descendants, your relatives, have been killed. And by resorting to you, the disgrace of the family, they have been abandoned by their good name.
उक्तवांश्चापि यत्पार्थं भीष्मं प्रति नरर्षभम् ।
तथान्तो विहितस्तेन स्वयमेव महात्मना ॥१५॥
15. uktavāṁścāpi yatpārthaṁ bhīṣmaṁ prati nararṣabham ,
tathānto vihitastena svayameva mahātmanā.
15. uktavān ca api yat pārtham bhīṣmam prati nararṣabham
tathā antaḥ vihitaḥ tena svayam eva mahātmanā
15. ca api yat nararṣabham bhīṣmam prati pārtham uktavān
tathā tena mahātmanā svayam eva antaḥ vihitaḥ
15. And what he (Krishna) had told Arjuna (Pārtha) concerning Bhishma, that bull among men, his end was indeed brought about by that great-souled one (mahātman) himself.
तस्यापि तव सोदर्यो निहन्ता पापकृत्तमः ।
नान्यः पाञ्चालपुत्रेभ्यो विद्यते भुवि पापकृत् ॥१६॥
16. tasyāpi tava sodaryo nihantā pāpakṛttamaḥ ,
nānyaḥ pāñcālaputrebhyo vidyate bhuvi pāpakṛt.
16. tasya api tava sodaryaḥ nihantā pāpakṛttamaḥ na
anyaḥ pāñcālaputrebhyaḥ vidyate bhuvi pāpakṛt
16. api tasya tava sodaryaḥ nihantā pāpakṛttamaḥ
bhuvi pāñcālaputrebhyaḥ anyaḥ pāpakṛt na vidyate
16. Even your own uterine brother, that killer, is most sinful. No other sinner exists on earth worse than the sons of Pañcāla.
स चापि सृष्टः पित्रा ते भीष्मस्यान्तकरः किल ।
शिखण्डी रक्षितस्तेन स च मृत्युर्महात्मनः ॥१७॥
17. sa cāpi sṛṣṭaḥ pitrā te bhīṣmasyāntakaraḥ kila ,
śikhaṇḍī rakṣitastena sa ca mṛtyurmahātmanaḥ.
17. सः च अपि सृष्टः पित्रा ते भीष्मस्य अन्तकरः
किल शिखण्डी रक्षितः तेन सः च मृत्युः महात्मनः
17. सः ते पित्रा भीष्मस्य अन्तकरः किल सृष्टः च
अपि तेन शिखण्डी रक्षितः सः च महात्मनः मृत्युः
17. He was indeed created by your father as the slayer of Bhishma, it is said. That Shikhandi was protected by your father, and he is the very death of the great-souled (ātman) Bhishma.
पाञ्चालाश्चलिता धर्मात्क्षुद्रा मित्रगुरुद्रुहः ।
त्वां प्राप्य सहसोदर्यं धिक्कृतं सर्वसाधुभिः ॥१८॥
18. pāñcālāścalitā dharmātkṣudrā mitragurudruhaḥ ,
tvāṁ prāpya sahasodaryaṁ dhikkṛtaṁ sarvasādhubhiḥ.
18. पाञ्चालाः चलिताः धर्मात् क्षुद्राः मित्रगुरुद्रुहः
त्वां प्राप्य सहसा उदयम् धिक्कृतम् सर्वसाधुभिः
18. क्षुद्राः मित्रगुरुद्रुहः पाञ्चालाः धर्मात् चलिताः
त्वां प्राप्य सहसा उदयम् सर्वसाधुभिः धिक्कृतम्
18. The Pañcālas are petty betrayers of friends and teachers who have deviated from natural law (dharma). Having suddenly gained power through you, they are condemned by all good people.
पुनश्चेदीदृशीं वाचं मत्समीपे वदिष्यसि ।
शिरस्ते पातयिष्यामि गदया वज्रकल्पया ॥१९॥
19. punaścedīdṛśīṁ vācaṁ matsamīpe vadiṣyasi ,
śiraste pātayiṣyāmi gadayā vajrakalpayā.
19. पुनः च चेत् ईदृशीम् वाचम् मत्समीपे वदिष्यसि
शिरः ते पातयिष्याmi गदया वज्रकल्पया
19. चेत् पुनः च ईदृशीम् वाचम् मत्समीपे वadiṣyasi
ते शिरः वज्रकल्पया गदया पातयिष्याmi
19. And if you again speak such words in my presence, I will strike down your head with a mace that is like a thunderbolt.
सात्वतेनैवमाक्षिप्तः पार्षतः परुषाक्षरम् ।
संरब्धः सात्यकिं प्राह संक्रुद्धः प्रहसन्निव ॥२०॥
20. sātvatenaivamākṣiptaḥ pārṣataḥ paruṣākṣaram ,
saṁrabdhaḥ sātyakiṁ prāha saṁkruddhaḥ prahasanniva.
20. सात्वतेन एवम् आक्षिप्तः पार्षतः परुषाक्षरम्
संरब्धः सात्यकिम् प्राह संक्रुद्धः प्रहसन् इव
20. सात्वतेन एवम् परुषाक्षरम् आक्षिप्तः संरब्धः
संक्रुद्धः पार्षतः प्रहसन् इव सात्यकिम् प्राह
20. Thus reproached by Satyaki with harsh words, Dhrishtadyumna, though greatly enraged, spoke to Satyaki as if laughing.
श्रूयते श्रूयते चेति क्षम्यते चेति माधव ।
न चानार्य शुभं साधुं पुरुषं क्षेप्तुमर्हसि ॥२१॥
21. śrūyate śrūyate ceti kṣamyate ceti mādhava ,
na cānārya śubhaṁ sādhuṁ puruṣaṁ kṣeptumarhasi.
21. śrūyate śrūyate ca iti kṣamyate ca iti mādhava na
ca anārya śubham sādhum puruṣam kṣeptum arhasi
21. mādhava iti śrūyate ca iti śrūyate ca iti kṣamyate
na ca anārya śubham sādhum puruṣam kṣeptum arhasi
21. O Madhava, it is repeatedly said, 'one should be forgiving.' But you should not ignobly criticize a good, virtuous, auspicious man (puruṣa).
क्षमा प्रशस्यते लोके न तु पापोऽर्हति क्षमाम् ।
क्षमावन्तं हि पापात्मा जितोऽयमिति मन्यते ॥२२॥
22. kṣamā praśasyate loke na tu pāpo'rhati kṣamām ,
kṣamāvantaṁ hi pāpātmā jito'yamiti manyate.
22. kṣamā praśasyate loke na tu pāpaḥ arhati kṣamām
kṣamāvantam hi pāpātmā jitaḥ ayam iti manyate
22. kṣamā loke praśasyate tu pāpaḥ kṣamām na arhati
hi pāpātmā kṣamāvantam ayam jitaḥ iti manyate
22. Forgiveness is praised in the world, but a wicked person does not deserve forgiveness. For indeed, a wicked soul (pāpātman) considers a forgiving person, 'This one is conquered (jita).'
स त्वं क्षुद्रसमाचारो नीचात्मा पापनिश्चयः ।
आ केशाग्रान्नखाग्राच्च वक्तव्यो वक्तुमिच्छसि ॥२३॥
23. sa tvaṁ kṣudrasamācāro nīcātmā pāpaniścayaḥ ,
ā keśāgrānnakhāgrācca vaktavyo vaktumicchasi.
23. sa tvam kṣudrasamācāraḥ nīcātmā pāpaniścayaḥ ā
keśāgrāt nakhāgrāt ca vaktavyaḥ vaktum icchasi
23. sa tvam kṣudrasamācāraḥ nīcātmā pāpaniścayaḥ ca
keśāgrāt nakhāgrāt ā vaktavyaḥ vaktum icchasi
23. You, of such petty (kṣudra) conduct, low-minded (nīcātman), and resolved on evil, wish to speak, though you yourself deserve to be condemned (vaktavya) from the tips of your hair to the tips of your nails.
यः स भूरिश्रवाश्छिन्ने भुजे प्रायगतस्त्वया ।
वार्यमाणेन निहतस्ततः पापतरं नु किम् ॥२४॥
24. yaḥ sa bhūriśravāśchinne bhuje prāyagatastvayā ,
vāryamāṇena nihatastataḥ pāpataraṁ nu kim.
24. yaḥ saḥ bhūriśravāḥ chinne bhuje prāyagataḥ
tvayā vāryamāṇena nihataḥ tataḥ pāpataram nu kim
24. yaḥ saḥ bhūriśravāḥ chinne bhuje prāyagataḥ
tvayā vāryamāṇena nihataḥ tataḥ kim nu pāpataram
24. He who was Bhurishravas, with his arm severed and having undertaken a fast unto death, was killed by you, even while you were being restrained. What, then, could be more sinful than that?
व्यूहमानो मया द्रोणो दिव्येनास्त्रेण संयुगे ।
विसृष्टशस्त्रो निहतः किं तत्र क्रूर दुष्कृतम् ॥२५॥
25. vyūhamāno mayā droṇo divyenāstreṇa saṁyuge ,
visṛṣṭaśastro nihataḥ kiṁ tatra krūra duṣkṛtam.
25. vyūhamānaḥ mayā droṇaḥ divyena astreṇa saṃyuge
visṛṣṭaśastraḥ nihataḥ kim tatra krūram duṣkṛtam
25. mayā saṃyuge vyūhamānaḥ visṛṣṭaśastraḥ droṇaḥ
divyena astreṇa nihataḥ tatra krūram duṣkṛtam kim
25. Drona, who was arranging his troops in battle, was killed by me with a divine weapon, (even though) he had laid aside his weapons. What cruel or evil deed was there in that?
अयुध्यमानं यस्त्वाजौ तथा प्रायगतं मुनिम् ।
छिन्नबाहुं परैर्हन्यात्सात्यके स कथं भवेत् ॥२६॥
26. ayudhyamānaṁ yastvājau tathā prāyagataṁ munim ,
chinnabāhuṁ parairhanyātsātyake sa kathaṁ bhavet.
26. ayudhyamānam yaḥ tu ājau tathā prāyagatam munim
chinnabāhum paraiḥ hanyāt sātyake saḥ katham bhavet
26. yaḥ tu ājau ayudhyamānam tathā prāyagatam paraiḥ
chinnabāhum munim hanyāt saḥ sātyake katham bhavet
26. Indeed, whoever in battle would kill a sage (muni) who is not fighting, who has undertaken the vow of starvation (prāyopaveśa), and whose arms have been cut off by enemies - how could that person be Satyaki?
निहत्य त्वां यदा भूमौ स विक्रामति वीर्यवान् ।
किं तदा न निहंस्येनं भूत्वा पुरुषसत्तमः ॥२७॥
27. nihatya tvāṁ yadā bhūmau sa vikrāmati vīryavān ,
kiṁ tadā na nihaṁsyenaṁ bhūtvā puruṣasattamaḥ.
27. nihatya tvām yadā bhūmau saḥ vikrāmati vīryavān
kim tadā na nihaṃsi enam bhūtvā puruṣasattamaḥ
27. yadā vīryavān saḥ tvām nihatya bhūmau vikrāmati
tadā puruṣasattamaḥ bhūtvā enam na nihaṃsi kim
27. When that powerful one, having killed you, strides victoriously on the earth, why do you not then kill him, being the best among men (puruṣasattama)?
त्वया पुनरनार्येण पूर्वं पार्थेन निर्जितः ।
यदा तदा हतः शूरः सौमदत्तिः प्रतापवान् ॥२८॥
28. tvayā punaranāryeṇa pūrvaṁ pārthena nirjitaḥ ,
yadā tadā hataḥ śūraḥ saumadattiḥ pratāpavān.
28. tvayā punar anāryeṇa pūrvam pārthena nirjitaḥ
yadā tadā hataḥ śūraḥ saumadattiḥ pratāpavān
28. punar anāryeṇa tvayā pārthena pūrvam nirjitaḥ śūraḥ
pratāpavān saumadattiḥ yadā (āsīt) tadā hataḥ (abhavat)
28. But when the heroic and glorious son of Somadatta (Saumadatti), who had previously been defeated by you, the ignoble (anārya) Partha, (was in that state), then he was killed.
यत्र यत्र तु पाण्डूनां द्रोणो द्रावयते चमूम् ।
किरञ्शरसहस्राणि तत्र तत्र प्रयाम्यहम् ॥२९॥
29. yatra yatra tu pāṇḍūnāṁ droṇo drāvayate camūm ,
kirañśarasahasrāṇi tatra tatra prayāmyaham.

29. Wherever Droṇa routs the Pāṇḍavas' army, showering thousands of arrows, I too proceed there.
स त्वमेवंविधं कृत्वा कर्म चाण्डालवत्स्वयम् ।
वक्तुमिच्छसि वक्तव्यः कस्मान्मां परुषाण्यथ ॥३०॥
30. sa tvamevaṁvidhaṁ kṛtvā karma cāṇḍālavatsvayam ,
vaktumicchasi vaktavyaḥ kasmānmāṁ paruṣāṇyatha.
30. saḥ tvam evam-vidham kṛtvā karma cāṇḍālavat svayam
vaktum icchasi vaktavyaḥ kasmāt mām paruṣāṇi atha
30. saḥ tvam svayam evam-vidham cāṇḍālavat karma kṛtvā
atha kasmāt mām paruṣāṇi vaktavyaḥ vaktum icchasi
30. Having performed such an action (karma) yourself, like an outcaste (caṇḍāla), why then do you wish to speak harsh words to me, who should be addressed (with respect)?
कर्ता त्वं कर्मणोग्रस्य नाहं वृष्णिकुलाधम ।
पापानां च त्वमावासः कर्मणां मा पुनर्वद ॥३१॥
31. kartā tvaṁ karmaṇograsya nāhaṁ vṛṣṇikulādhama ,
pāpānāṁ ca tvamāvāsaḥ karmaṇāṁ mā punarvada.
31. kartā tvam karmaṇaḥ ugrasya na aham vṛṣṇikulādhama
pāpānām ca tvam āvāsaḥ karmaṇām mā punaḥ vada
31. tvam ugrasya karmaṇaḥ kartā na aham vṛṣṇikulādhama
ca tvam pāpānām karmaṇām āvāsaḥ mā punaḥ vada
31. You are the perpetrator of a terrible deed (karma), not I, O vilest among the Vṛṣṇi clan! You are also the abode of sins (karma). Do not speak (these words) to me again.
जोषमास्स्व न मां भूयो वक्तुमर्हस्यतः परम् ।
अधरोत्तरमेतद्धि यन्मा त्वं वक्तुमिच्छसि ॥३२॥
32. joṣamāssva na māṁ bhūyo vaktumarhasyataḥ param ,
adharottarametaddhi yanmā tvaṁ vaktumicchasi.
32. joṣam āssva na mām bhūyaḥ vaktum arhasi ataḥ param
adharottaram etat hi yat mām tvam vaktum icchasi
32. joṣam āssva tvam ataḥ param mām bhūyaḥ vaktum na arhasi
hi etat adharottaram yat tvam mām vaktum icchasi
32. Remain silent! You should not speak to me again after this. Indeed, this is an improper (adharottaram) reversal (of roles) that you wish to speak to me (in such a manner).
अथ वक्ष्यसि मां मौर्ख्याद्भूयः परुषमीदृशम् ।
गमयिष्यामि बाणैस्त्वां युधि वैवस्वतक्षयम् ॥३३॥
33. atha vakṣyasi māṁ maurkhyādbhūyaḥ paruṣamīdṛśam ,
gamayiṣyāmi bāṇaistvāṁ yudhi vaivasvatakṣayam.
33. atha vakṣyasi mām maukhyāt bhūyaḥ paruṣam īdṛśam
gamayiṣyāmi bāṇaiḥ tvām yudhi vaivasvatakṣayam
33. atha maukhyāt bhūyaḥ īdṛśam paruṣam mām vakṣyasi
(cet) tvām bāṇaiḥ yudhi vaivasvatakṣayam gamayiṣyāmi
33. If you speak such harsh words to me again out of foolishness, I will send you to the abode of Yama (vaivasvatakṣayam) in battle with my arrows.
न चैव मूर्ख धर्मेण केवलेनैव शक्यते ।
तेषामपि ह्यधर्मेण चेष्टितं शृणु यादृशम् ॥३४॥
34. na caiva mūrkha dharmeṇa kevalenaiva śakyate ,
teṣāmapi hyadharmeṇa ceṣṭitaṁ śṛṇu yādṛśam.
34. na ca eva mūrkha dharmeṇa kevalena eva śakyate
teṣām api hi adharmeṇa ceṣṭitam śṛṇu yādṛśam
34. mūrkha na ca eva kevalena dharmeṇa eva śakyate (kāryam kartum)
hi teṣām api adharmeṇa yādṛśam ceṣṭitam (āsīt tat) śṛṇu
34. O fool, it is certainly not possible to act solely by one's intrinsic nature (dharma). Indeed, listen to the sort of actions they also performed through unrighteousness (adharma).
वञ्चितः पाण्डवः पूर्वमधर्मेण युधिष्ठिरः ।
द्रौपदी च परिक्लिष्टा तथाधर्मेण सात्यके ॥३५॥
35. vañcitaḥ pāṇḍavaḥ pūrvamadharmeṇa yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
draupadī ca parikliṣṭā tathādharmeṇa sātyake.

35. O Satyaki, previously, the Pandava Yudhiṣṭhira was cheated through unrighteousness (adharma), and Draupadī was similarly tormented by unrighteousness (adharma).
प्रव्राजिता वनं सर्वे पाण्डवाः सह कृष्णया ।
सर्वस्वमपकृष्टं च तथाधर्मेण बालिश ॥३६॥
36. pravrājitā vanaṁ sarve pāṇḍavāḥ saha kṛṣṇayā ,
sarvasvamapakṛṣṭaṁ ca tathādharmeṇa bāliśa.
36. pravrājitāḥ vanam sarve pāṇḍavāḥ saha kṛṣṇayā
sarvasvam apakṛṣṭam ca tathā adharmeṇa bāliśa

36. O foolish one, all the Pandavas, along with Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), were exiled to the forest, and all their possessions were similarly taken away through unrighteousness (adharma).
अधर्मेणापकृष्टश्च मद्रराजः परैरितः ।
इतोऽप्यधर्मेण हतो भीष्मः कुरुपितामहः ।
भूरिश्रवा ह्यधर्मेण त्वया धर्मविदा हतः ॥३७॥
37. adharmeṇāpakṛṣṭaśca madrarājaḥ parairitaḥ ,
ito'pyadharmeṇa hato bhīṣmaḥ kurupitāmahaḥ ,
bhūriśravā hyadharmeṇa tvayā dharmavidā hataḥ.
37. adharmeṇa apakṛṣṭaḥ ca madrarājaḥ
paraiḥ itaḥ | itaḥ api adharmeṇa hataḥ
bhīṣmaḥ kurupitāmahaḥ | bhūriśravā
hi adharmeṇa tvayā dharmavit hataḥ
37. madrarājaḥ adharmeṇa apakṛṣṭaḥ ca
paraiḥ itaḥ itaḥ api kurupitāmahaḥ
bhīṣmaḥ adharmeṇa hataḥ hi dharmavit
tvayā bhūriśravā hataḥ adharmeṇa
37. The king of Madras was brought down by unrighteousness (adharma) and struck by others. Even here, Bhishma, the grandsire of the Kurus, was killed unrighteously (adharma). And Bhurishravas was indeed killed unrighteously (adharma) by you, who claim to be knowledgeable in natural law (dharma).
एवं परैराचरितं पाण्डवेयैश्च संयुगे ।
रक्षमाणैर्जयं वीरैर्धर्मज्ञैरपि सात्वत ॥३८॥
38. evaṁ parairācaritaṁ pāṇḍaveyaiśca saṁyuge ,
rakṣamāṇairjayaṁ vīrairdharmajñairapi sātvata.
38. evam paraiḥ ācaritam pāṇḍaveyaiḥ ca saṃyuge |
rakṣamāṇaiḥ jayam vīraiḥ dharmajñaiḥ api sātvata
38. evam saṃyuge paraiḥ ca pāṇḍaveyaiḥ jayam
rakṣamāṇaiḥ vīraiḥ api dharmajñaiḥ ācaritam sātvata
38. O Sātvata, in battle, such actions were committed by the enemies and by the Pāṇḍavas themselves, by heroes protecting their victory, even by those who understand natural law (dharma).
दुर्ज्ञेयः परमो धर्मस्तथाधर्मः सुदुर्विदः ।
युध्यस्व कौरवैः सार्धं मा गाः पितृनिवेशनम् ॥३९॥
39. durjñeyaḥ paramo dharmastathādharmaḥ sudurvidaḥ ,
yudhyasva kauravaiḥ sārdhaṁ mā gāḥ pitṛniveśanam.

39. The supreme natural law (dharma) is difficult to know, and unrighteousness (adharma) is exceedingly hard to discern. Therefore, fight alongside the Kauravas; do not go to the abode of your ancestors.
एवमादीनि वाक्यानि क्रूराणि परुषाणि च ।
श्रावितः सात्यकिः श्रीमानाकम्पित इवाभवत् ॥४०॥
40. evamādīni vākyāni krūrāṇi paruṣāṇi ca ,
śrāvitaḥ sātyakiḥ śrīmānākampita ivābhavat.
40. evamādīni vākyāni krūrāṇi paruṣāṇi ca |
śrāvitaḥ sātyakiḥ śrīmān ākampitaḥ iva abhavat

40. Having been made to hear such cruel and harsh words, the illustrious Sātyaki became as if trembling.
तच्छ्रुत्वा क्रोधताम्राक्षः सात्यकिस्त्वाददे गदाम् ।
विनिःश्वस्य यथा सर्पः प्रणिधाय रथे धनुः ॥४१॥
41. tacchrutvā krodhatāmrākṣaḥ sātyakistvādade gadām ,
viniḥśvasya yathā sarpaḥ praṇidhāya rathe dhanuḥ.
41. tat śrutvā krodhatāmrākṣaḥ sātyakiḥ tu ādade gadām
viniḥśvasya yathā sarpaḥ praṇidhāya rathe dhanuḥ

41. Having heard that, Satyaki, whose eyes were red with anger, took up his mace, hissing deeply like a snake after placing his bow on the chariot.
ततोऽभिपत्य पाञ्चाल्यं संरम्भेणेदमब्रवीत् ।
न त्वां वक्ष्यामि परुषं हनिष्ये त्वां वधक्षमम् ॥४२॥
42. tato'bhipatya pāñcālyaṁ saṁrambheṇedamabravīt ,
na tvāṁ vakṣyāmi paruṣaṁ haniṣye tvāṁ vadhakṣamam.
42. tataḥ abhipatya pāñcālyam saṃrambheṇa idam abravīt
na tvām vakṣyāmi paruṣam haniṣye tvām vadhakṣamam
42. tataḥ saṃrambheṇa pāñcālyam abhipatya idam abravīt.
tām paruṣam na vakṣyāmi,

42. Then, rushing towards the Panchala (Dhrishtadyumna) with fury, he said this: "I will not speak harsh words to you; I will kill you, who are deserving of death."
तमापतन्तं सहसा महाबलममर्षणम् ।
पाञ्चाल्यायाभिसंक्रुद्धमन्तकायान्तकोपमम् ॥४३॥
43. tamāpatantaṁ sahasā mahābalamamarṣaṇam ,
pāñcālyāyābhisaṁkruddhamantakāyāntakopamam.

pāñcālyāya abhisaṃkruddham antakāya antakopamam

43. (They saw) him rushing forth suddenly, mighty and wrathful, greatly enraged at the Panchala (Dhrishtadyumna), and resembling the very god of death (Antaka).
चोदितो वासुदेवेन भीमसेनो महाबलः ।
अवप्लुत्य रथात्तूर्णं बाहुभ्यां समवारयत् ॥४४॥
44. codito vāsudevena bhīmaseno mahābalaḥ ,
avaplutya rathāttūrṇaṁ bāhubhyāṁ samavārayat.

44. Urged by Vasudeva (Krishna), the mighty Bhimasena, having quickly jumped down from the chariot, restrained (Satyaki) with his two arms.
द्रवमाणं तथा क्रुद्धं सात्यकिं पाण्डवो बली ।
प्रस्कन्दमानमादाय जगाम बलिनं बलात् ॥४५॥
45. dravamāṇaṁ tathā kruddhaṁ sātyakiṁ pāṇḍavo balī ,
praskandamānamādāya jagāma balinaṁ balāt.

45. The strong Pāṇḍava (Bhīma), seizing Satyaki, who was both fleeing and angry, forcibly took hold of that strong warrior as he struggled.
स्थित्वा विष्टभ्य चरणौ भीमेन शिनिपुंगवः ।
निगृहीतः पदे षष्ठे बलेन बलिनां वरः ॥४६॥
46. sthitvā viṣṭabhya caraṇau bhīmena śinipuṁgavaḥ ,
nigṛhītaḥ pade ṣaṣṭhe balena balināṁ varaḥ.

46. Having stood firm and braced his feet, Bhīma seized the best of the strong (balinām varaḥ), Satyaki, the foremost among the Śinis (śinipuṅgavaḥ), by force in the sixth step.
अवरुह्य रथात्तं तु ह्रियमाणं बलीयसा ।
उवाच श्लक्ष्णया वाचा सहदेवो विशां पते ॥४७॥
47. avaruhya rathāttaṁ tu hriyamāṇaṁ balīyasā ,
uvāca ślakṣṇayā vācā sahadevo viśāṁ pate.

uvāca ślakṣṇayā vācā sahadevaḥ viśām pate
47. sahadevaḥ tu rathāt avaruhya,

47. But Sahadeva, having descended from his chariot, spoke to him (Satyaki), who was being carried away by the stronger one (Bhīma), with a gentle voice, O lord of the people (viśām pate).
अस्माकं पुरुषव्याघ्र मित्रमन्यन्न विद्यते ।
परमन्धकवृष्णिभ्यः पाञ्चालेभ्यश्च माधव ॥४८॥
48. asmākaṁ puruṣavyāghra mitramanyanna vidyate ,
paramandhakavṛṣṇibhyaḥ pāñcālebhyaśca mādhava.
48. asmākam puruṣavyāghra mitram anyat na vidyate
param andhakavṛṣṇibhyaḥ pāñcālebhyas ca mādhava
48. puruṣavyāghra mādhava,
asmākam andhakavṛṣṇibhyaḥ pāñcālebhyas ca param anyat mitram na vidyate
48. O tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), O descendant of Madhu (mādhava), for us there is no other friend besides the Andhakas, the Vṛṣṇis, and the Pāñcālas.
तथैवान्धकवृष्णीनां तव चैव विशेषतः ।
कृष्णस्य च तथास्मत्तो मित्रमन्यन्न विद्यते ॥४९॥
49. tathaivāndhakavṛṣṇīnāṁ tava caiva viśeṣataḥ ,
kṛṣṇasya ca tathāsmatto mitramanyanna vidyate.
49. tathā eva andhakavṛṣṇīnām tava ca eva viśeṣataḥ
kṛṣṇasya ca tathā asmāttaḥ mitram anyat na vidyate
49. andhakavṛṣṇīnām tava ca eva viśeṣataḥ kṛṣṇasya
ca tathā asmāttaḥ anyat mitram na vidyate
49. Similarly, among the Andhakas and Vṛṣṇis, and especially for you and Kṛṣṇa, there is no other friend from our side.
पाञ्चालानां च वार्ष्णेय समुद्रान्तां विचिन्वताम् ।
नान्यदस्ति परं मित्रं यथा पाण्डववृष्णयः ॥५०॥
50. pāñcālānāṁ ca vārṣṇeya samudrāntāṁ vicinvatām ,
nānyadasti paraṁ mitraṁ yathā pāṇḍavavṛṣṇayaḥ.
50. pāñcālānām ca vārṣṇeya samudrāntām vicinvatām na
anyat asti param mitram yathā pāṇḍavavṛṣṇayaḥ
50. vārṣṇeya pāñcālānām ca samudrāntām vicinvatām

50. O Vārṣṇeya, even for the Pāñcālas who search throughout lands extending to the ocean, there is no other supreme friend like the Pāṇḍavas and Vṛṣṇis.
स भवानीदृशं मित्रं मन्यते च यथा भवान् ।
भवन्तश्च यथास्माकं भवतां च तथा वयम् ॥५१॥
51. sa bhavānīdṛśaṁ mitraṁ manyate ca yathā bhavān ,
bhavantaśca yathāsmākaṁ bhavatāṁ ca tathā vayam.
51. saḥ bhavān īdṛśam mitram manyate ca yathā bhavān
bhavantaḥ ca yathā asmākam bhavatām ca tathā vayam
51. saḥ bhavān īdṛśam mitram manyate ca yathā bhavān

51. That honorable one (Kṛṣṇa) considers (us) such a friend, just as you (Drupada) do. And just as you (Pāñcālas) are to us (Pāṇḍavas), so also are we to you.
स एवं सर्वधर्मज्ञो मित्रधर्ममनुस्मरन् ।
नियच्छ मन्युं पाञ्चाल्यात्प्रशाम्य शिनिपुंगव ॥५२॥
52. sa evaṁ sarvadharmajño mitradharmamanusmaran ,
niyaccha manyuṁ pāñcālyātpraśāmya śinipuṁgava.

niyaccha manyum pāñcālyāt praśāmya śinipuṅgava

52. O best of the Śinis, you who thus know all principles of natural law (dharma), remembering the sacred duty (dharma) of a friend, please calm down and restrain your anger towards the King of Pāñcāla.
पार्षतस्य क्षम त्वं वै क्षमतां तव पार्षतः ।
वयं क्षमयितारश्च किमन्यत्र शमाद्भवेत् ॥५३॥
53. pārṣatasya kṣama tvaṁ vai kṣamatāṁ tava pārṣataḥ ,
vayaṁ kṣamayitāraśca kimanyatra śamādbhavet.
53. pārṣatasya kṣama tvaṃ vai kṣamatāṃ tava pārṣataḥ
| vayam kṣamayitāraḥ ca kim anyatra śamāt bhavet
53. pārṣata tvaṃ vai kṣama tava pārṣataḥ kṣamatām

53. O Pārṣata (Dhrishtadyumna), you must indeed forgive (Satyaki). Let your own Pārṣata (Dhrishtadyumna) also show forgiveness. And we are disposed to forgive; what else can come from tranquility (śama)?
प्रशाम्यमाने शैनेये सहदेवेन मारिष ।
पाञ्चालराजस्य सुतः प्रहसन्निदमब्रवीत् ॥५४॥
54. praśāmyamāne śaineye sahadevena māriṣa ,
pāñcālarājasya sutaḥ prahasannidamabravīt.

54. O respected one (māriṣa), as Śaineya (Satyaki) was being pacified by Sahadeva, the son of the Pañcāla king (Dhrishtadyumna) said this with a laugh.
मुञ्च मुञ्च शिनेः पौत्रं भीम युद्धमदान्वितम् ।
आसादयतु मामेष धराधरमिवानिलः ॥५५॥
55. muñca muñca śineḥ pautraṁ bhīma yuddhamadānvitam ,
āsādayatu māmeṣa dharādharamivānilaḥ.

| āsādayatu mām eṣa dharā-dharam iva anilaḥ

55. O Bhīma, release, release Śini's grandson (Satyaki), who is filled with battle-fury! Let this one (Satyaki) approach me, just as the wind (anila) approaches a mountain.
यावदस्य शितैर्बाणैः संरम्भं विनयाम्यहम् ।
युद्धश्रद्धां च कौन्तेय जीवितस्य च संयुगे ॥५६॥
56. yāvadasya śitairbāṇaiḥ saṁrambhaṁ vinayāmyaham ,
yuddhaśraddhāṁ ca kaunteya jīvitasya ca saṁyuge.
56. yāvat asya śitaiḥ bāṇaiḥ saṃrambham vinayāmi aham
| yuddhaśraddhām ca kaunteya jīvitasya ca saṃyuge
56. kaunteya aham yāvat asya saṃrambham śitaiḥ bāṇaiḥ
vinayāmi ca yuddhaśraddhām ca jīvitasya saṃyuge
56. With sharp arrows, I shall subdue his fury – and, O son of Kunti (kaunteya), his desire for battle (yuddhaśraddhā) and his very life (jīvita) in this combat.
किं नु शक्यं मया कर्तुं कार्यं यदिदमुद्यतम् ।
सुमहत्पाण्डुपुत्राणामायान्त्येते हि कौरवाः ॥५७॥
57. kiṁ nu śakyaṁ mayā kartuṁ kāryaṁ yadidamudyatam ,
sumahatpāṇḍuputrāṇāmāyāntyete hi kauravāḥ.
57. kim nu śakyam mayā kartum kāryam yat idam udyatam
sumahat Pāṇḍuputrāṇām āyānti ete hi Kauravāḥ
57. nu kim mayā śakyam kartum yat idam sumahat kāryam
udyatam hi ete Kauravāḥ Pāṇḍuputrāṇām āyānti
57. What, indeed, can be done by me for this immense undertaking that has arisen, when these Kauravas are indeed approaching against the sons of Pāṇḍu?
अथ वा फल्गुनः सर्वान्वारयिष्यति संयुगे ।
अहमप्यस्य मूर्धानं पातयिष्यामि सायकैः ॥५८॥
58. atha vā phalgunaḥ sarvānvārayiṣyati saṁyuge ,
ahamapyasya mūrdhānaṁ pātayiṣyāmi sāyakaiḥ.
58. atha vā Phalgunaḥ sarvān vārayiṣyati saṃyuge
aham api asya mūrdhānam pātayiṣyāmi sāyakaiḥ
58. atha vā Phalgunaḥ saṃyuge sarvān vārayiṣyati;
api aham asya mūrdhānam sāyakaiḥ pātayiṣyāmi
58. Alternatively, Arjuna will ward off all (of them) in battle. And I too will strike down his head with arrows.
मन्यते छिन्नबाहुं मां भूरिश्रवसमाहवे ।
उत्सृजैनमहं वैनमेष मां वा हनिष्यति ॥५९॥
59. manyate chinnabāhuṁ māṁ bhūriśravasamāhave ,
utsṛjainamahaṁ vainameṣa māṁ vā haniṣyati.
59. manyate chinnabāhum mām Bhūriśravasam āhave
utsṛja enam aham vai enam eṣa mām vā haniṣyati
59. āhave (saḥ) mām chinnabāhum Bhūriśravasam manyate; aham enam utsṛja,
vā eṣa mām vai haniṣyati
59. He considers me, Bhūriśravas, to be one whose arms are severed in battle. I shall either release him (the opponent) or he will certainly kill me.
शृण्वन्पाञ्चालवाक्यानि सात्यकिः सर्पवच्छ्वसन् ।
भीमबाह्वन्तरे सक्तो विस्फुरत्यनिशं बली ॥६०॥
60. śṛṇvanpāñcālavākyāni sātyakiḥ sarpavacchvasan ,
bhīmabāhvantare sakto visphuratyaniśaṁ balī.

Bhīmabāhu-antare saktaḥ visphurati aniśam balī
60. Pāñcālavākyāni śṛṇvan,
sarpavat śvasan,
Bhīmabāhu-antare saktaḥ balī Sātyakiḥ aniśam visphurati
60. Hearing the words of the Pāñcālas, Sātyaki, the mighty one, hissing like a serpent, and caught within Bhīma's embrace, struggled constantly.
त्वरया वासुदेवश्च धर्मराजश्च मारिष ।
यत्नेन महता वीरौ वारयामासतुस्ततः ॥६१॥
61. tvarayā vāsudevaśca dharmarājaśca māriṣa ,
yatnena mahatā vīrau vārayāmāsatustataḥ.
61. tvarayā vāsudevaḥ ca dharmarājaḥ ca māriṣa
yatnena mahatā vīrau vārayāmāsatuḥ tataḥ
61. māriṣa tataḥ vāsudevaḥ ca dharmarājaḥ ca

61. O venerable one, then Vāsudeva and Dharmarāja, with great effort and speed, restrained the two heroes.
निवार्य परमेष्वासौ क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनौ ।
युयुत्सवः परान्संख्ये प्रतीयुः क्षत्रियर्षभाः ॥६२॥
62. nivārya parameṣvāsau krodhasaṁraktalocanau ,
yuyutsavaḥ parānsaṁkhye pratīyuḥ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ.

62. Having restrained the two great archers whose eyes were reddened with anger, the best of kṣatriyas, eager to fight, advanced against their enemies in battle.
