गिरं तां मधुरां श्रुत्वा गौतमो विस्मितस्तदा ।
कौतूहलान्वितो राजन्राजधर्माणमैक्षत ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
giraṁ tāṁ madhurāṁ śrutvā gautamo vismitastadā ,

Rājan,

1. Bhishma spoke: "Having heard that sweet speech, Gautama was then astonished. Filled with curiosity, O King (rajan), he gazed at Rajadharma."
राजधर्मोवाच ।
भोः कश्यपस्य पुत्रोऽहं माता दाक्षायणी च मे ।
अतिथिस्त्वं गुणोपेतः स्वागतं ते द्विजर्षभ ॥२॥
2. rājadharmovāca ,
bhoḥ kaśyapasya putro'haṁ mātā dākṣāyaṇī ca me ,
atithistvaṁ guṇopetaḥ svāgataṁ te dvijarṣabha.

ca me atithiḥ tvam guṇopetaḥ svāgatam te dvijarṣabha

2. Rājadharma said: "O best among the twice-born (dvija), I am the son of Kaśyapa, and Dākṣāyaṇī is my mother. You are a guest endowed with virtues. Welcome to you!"
भीष्म उवाच ।
तस्मै दत्त्वा स सत्कारं विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा ।
शालपुष्पमयीं दिव्यां बृसीं समुपकल्पयत् ॥३॥
3. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tasmai dattvā sa satkāraṁ vidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā ,
śālapuṣpamayīṁ divyāṁ bṛsīṁ samupakalpayat.

3. Bhīṣma said: Having offered him hospitality (satkāra) with an act (karma) prescribed by sacred law (vidhi), he arranged a splendid mat (bṛsī) made of śāla flowers.
भगीरथरथाक्रान्तान्देशान्गङ्गानिषेवितान् ।
ये चरन्ति महामीनास्तांश्च तस्यान्वकल्पयत् ॥४॥
4. bhagīratharathākrāntāndeśāngaṅgāniṣevitān ,
ye caranti mahāmīnāstāṁśca tasyānvakalpayat.
4. bhagīratharathākrāntān deśān gaṅgāniṣevitān ye
caranti mahāmīnāḥ tān ca tasya anvakalpayat
4. saḥ tasya bhagīratharathākrāntān gaṅgāniṣevitān
deśān ca ye mahāmīnāḥ caranti tān anvakalpayat
4. He (Rājadharma) arranged for him (the guest) the regions that were traversed by Bhagīratha's chariot and frequented by the Gaṅgā, and also the great fish that roam in them.
वह्निं चापि सुसंदीप्तं मीनांश्चैव सुपीवरान् ।
स गौतमायातिथये न्यवेदयत काश्यपः ॥५॥
5. vahniṁ cāpi susaṁdīptaṁ mīnāṁścaiva supīvarān ,
sa gautamāyātithaye nyavedayata kāśyapaḥ.
5. vahnim ca api susaṃdīptam mīnān ca eva supīvarān
saḥ gautamāya atithaye nyavedayat kāśyapaḥ
5. saḥ kāśyapaḥ gautamāya atithaye susaṃdīptam
vahnim ca api ca eva supīvarān mīnān nyavedayat
5. He, the son of Kaśyapa, offered to Gautama, who was his guest (atithi), a well-kindled fire and also very plump fish.
भुक्तवन्तं च तं विप्रं प्रीतात्मानं महामनाः ।
क्लमापनयनार्थं स पक्षाभ्यामभ्यवीजयत् ॥६॥
6. bhuktavantaṁ ca taṁ vipraṁ prītātmānaṁ mahāmanāḥ ,
klamāpanayanārthaṁ sa pakṣābhyāmabhyavījayat.
6. bhuktavantam ca tam vipram prītātmānam mahāmanāḥ
klamāpanayanārtham sa pakṣābhyām abhyavījayat
6. mahāmanāḥ saḥ klama-apanayana-artham bhuktavantam
ca prītātmānam tam vipram pakṣābhyām abhyavījayat
6. The great-souled one (the crane), for the purpose of removing the fatigue of that Brahmin who had eaten and whose spirit (ātman) was content, fanned him with his wings.
ततो विश्रान्तमासीनं गोत्रप्रश्नमपृच्छत ।
सोऽब्रवीद्गौतमोऽस्मीति ब्राह्म नान्यदुदाहरत् ॥७॥
7. tato viśrāntamāsīnaṁ gotrapraśnamapṛcchata ,
so'bravīdgautamo'smīti brāhma nānyadudāharat.
7. tataḥ viśrāntam āsīnam gotrapraśnam apṛcchata saḥ
abravīt Gautamaḥ asmi iti brāhma na anyat udāharat
7. (Bakaḥ) tataḥ viśrāntam āsīnam
(vipram) gotrapraśnam apṛcchata saḥ
(vipraḥ) "Gautamaḥ asmi" iti
abravīt (ca) brāhma anyat na udāharat
7. Then, the crane asked the Brahmin, who was rested and seated, about his family lineage. He (the Brahmin) replied, "I am Gautama," and revealed nothing else regarding his Brahmin (brāhma) status.
तस्मै पर्णमयं दिव्यं दिव्यपुष्पाधिवासितम् ।
गन्धाढ्यं शयनं प्रादात्स शिश्ये तत्र वै सुखम् ॥८॥
8. tasmai parṇamayaṁ divyaṁ divyapuṣpādhivāsitam ,
gandhāḍhyaṁ śayanaṁ prādātsa śiśye tatra vai sukham.
8. tasmai parṇamayam divyam divyapuṣpādhivāsitam
gandhāḍhyam śayanam prādāt saḥ śiśye tatra vai sukham
8. (Bakaḥ) tasmai parṇamayam divyam divyapuṣpādhivāsitam
gandhāḍhyam śayanam prādāt saḥ (Vipraḥ) tatra vai sukham śiśye
8. To him, (the crane) offered a wonderful bed made of leaves, fragrant with divine flowers and rich in scents. He then lay down there comfortably.
अथोपविष्टं शयने गौतमं बकराट्तदा ।
पप्रच्छ काश्यपो वाग्मी किमागमनकारणम् ॥९॥
9. athopaviṣṭaṁ śayane gautamaṁ bakarāṭtadā ,
papraccha kāśyapo vāgmī kimāgamanakāraṇam.
9. atha upaviṣṭam śayane Gautamam bakarāṭ tadā
papraccha Kāśyapaḥ vāgmī kim āgamanakāraṇam
9. atha tadā śayane upaviṣṭam Gautamam vāgmī bakarāṭ
Kāśyapaḥ kim āgamanakāraṇam (iti) papraccha
9. Then, as Gautama was seated on the bed, the eloquent Kaśyapa, the great crane, asked him, "What is the reason for your arrival?"
ततोऽब्रवीद्गौतमस्तं दरिद्रोऽहं महामते ।
समुद्रगमनाकाङ्क्षी द्रव्यार्थमिति भारत ॥१०॥
10. tato'bravīdgautamastaṁ daridro'haṁ mahāmate ,
samudragamanākāṅkṣī dravyārthamiti bhārata.
10. tataḥ abravīt gautamaḥ tam daridraḥ aham mahāmate
samudragamanākāṅkṣī dravyārtham iti bhārata
10. tataḥ gautamaḥ tam abravīt mahāmate bhārata,
aham daridraḥ samudragamanākāṅkṣī dravyārtham iti
10. Then Gautama said to him, "O great-minded one, O descendant of Bharata, I am poor and wish to go to the sea in search of wealth."
तं काश्यपोऽब्रवीत्प्रीतो नोत्कण्ठां कर्तुमर्हसि ।
कृतकार्यो द्विजश्रेष्ठ सद्रव्यो यास्यसे गृहान् ॥११॥
11. taṁ kāśyapo'bravītprīto notkaṇṭhāṁ kartumarhasi ,
kṛtakāryo dvijaśreṣṭha sadravyo yāsyase gṛhān.
11. tam kāśyapaḥ abravīt prītaḥ na utkaṇṭhām kartum arhasi
kṛtakāryaḥ dvijaśreṣṭha sadravyaḥ yāsyase gṛhān
11. prītaḥ kāśyapaḥ tam abravīt dvijaśreṣṭha,
tvaṃ utkaṇṭhām kartum na arhasi tvaṃ kṛtakāryaḥ sadravyaḥ gṛhān yāsyase
11. Kāśyapa, pleased, said to him: "O best of the twice-born (dvija), you should not feel any anxiety. You will return home having accomplished your purpose and with wealth."
चतुर्विधा ह्यर्थगतिर्बृहस्पतिमतं यथा ।
पारंपर्यं तथा दैवं कर्म मित्रमिति प्रभो ॥१२॥
12. caturvidhā hyarthagatirbṛhaspatimataṁ yathā ,
pāraṁparyaṁ tathā daivaṁ karma mitramiti prabho.
12. caturvidhā hi arthagatiḥ bṛhaspatimatam yathā
pāraṃparyam tathā daivam karma mitram iti prabho
12. prabho,
hi bṛhaspatimatam yathā arthagatiḥ caturvidhā pāraṃparyam tathā daivam karma mitram iti
12. Indeed, O lord, the means of acquiring wealth (artha) are fourfold, according to the teachings of Bṛhaspati: namely, inheritance (pāraṃparya), divine providence (daiva), one's own actions (karma), and a friend.
प्रादुर्भूतोऽस्मि ते मित्रं सुहृत्त्वं च मम त्वयि ।
सोऽहं तथा यतिष्यामि भविष्यसि यथार्थवान् ॥१३॥
13. prādurbhūto'smi te mitraṁ suhṛttvaṁ ca mama tvayi ,
so'haṁ tathā yatiṣyāmi bhaviṣyasi yathārthavān.
13. prādurbhūtaḥ asmi te mitram suhṛttvam ca mama tvayi
saḥ aham tathā yatiṣyāmi bhaviṣyasi yathārthavān
13. aham te mitram prādurbhūtaḥ asmi ca mama suhṛttvam
tvayi saḥ aham tathā yatiṣyāmi yathārthavān bhaviṣyasi
13. I have appeared as your friend, and my friendship is towards you. Therefore, I will endeavor in such a way that you will become wealthy (arthavat).
ततः प्रभातसमये सुखं पृष्ट्वाब्रवीदिदम् ।
गच्छ सौम्य पथानेन कृतकृत्यो भविष्यसि ॥१४॥
14. tataḥ prabhātasamaye sukhaṁ pṛṣṭvābravīdidam ,
gaccha saumya pathānena kṛtakṛtyo bhaviṣyasi.
14. tataḥ prabhātasamaye sukham pṛṣṭvā abravīt idam
gachchha saumya pathā anena kṛtakṛtyaḥ bhaviṣyasi
14. saumya tataḥ prabhātasamaye sukham pṛṣṭvā idam
abravīt anena pathā gachchha kṛtakṛtyaḥ bhaviṣyasi
14. Then, at dawn, having comfortably questioned him, he said this: "Go, gentle one, by this path; you will achieve your purpose."
इतस्त्रियोजनं गत्वा राक्षसाधिपतिर्महान् ।
विरूपाक्ष इति ख्यातः सखा मम महाबलः ॥१५॥
15. itastriyojanaṁ gatvā rākṣasādhipatirmahān ,
virūpākṣa iti khyātaḥ sakhā mama mahābalaḥ.
15. itaḥ triyojanam gatvā rākṣasādhipatiḥ mahān
virūpākṣaḥ iti khyātaḥ sakhā mama mahābalaḥ
15. itaḥ triyojanam gatvā mahān rākṣasādhipatiḥ
virūpākṣaḥ iti khyātaḥ mama mahābalaḥ sakhā
15. Having gone three yojanas from here, there is a great lord of rākṣasas, renowned as Virūpākṣa, who is my exceedingly powerful friend.
तं गच्छ द्विजमुख्य त्वं मम वाक्यप्रचोदितः ।
कामानभीप्सितांस्तुभ्यं दाता नास्त्यत्र संशयः ॥१६॥
16. taṁ gaccha dvijamukhya tvaṁ mama vākyapracoditaḥ ,
kāmānabhīpsitāṁstubhyaṁ dātā nāstyatra saṁśayaḥ.
16. tam gachchha dvijamukhya tvam mama vākyaprachoditaḥ
kāmān abhīpsitān tu tubhyam dātā na asti atra saṃśayaḥ
16. dvijamukhya tvam mama vākyaprachoditaḥ tam gachchha
atra tubhyam abhīpsitān kāmān dātā na asti saṃśayaḥ
16. You, chief among brahmins (dvijamukhya), go to him, impelled by my words. There is no doubt here that he will grant you your desired wishes.
इत्युक्तः प्रययौ राजन्गौतमो विगतक्लमः ।
फलान्यमृतकल्पानि भक्षयन्स्म यथेष्टतः ॥१७॥
17. ityuktaḥ prayayau rājangautamo vigataklamaḥ ,
phalānyamṛtakalpāni bhakṣayansma yatheṣṭataḥ.
17. iti uktaḥ prayayau rājan gautamaḥ vigataklamaḥ
phalāni amṛtakalpāni bhakṣayan sma yatheṣṭataḥ
17. rājan iti uktaḥ vigataklamaḥ gautamaḥ yatheṣṭataḥ
amṛtakalpāni phalāni bhakṣayan sma prayayau
17. Thus addressed, Gautama, free from weariness, departed, O king, continually eating fruits that were like nectar, as he desired.
चन्दनागुरुमुख्यानि त्वक्पत्राणां वनानि च ।
तस्मिन्पथि महाराज सेवमानो द्रुतं ययौ ॥१८॥
18. candanāgurumukhyāni tvakpatrāṇāṁ vanāni ca ,
tasminpathi mahārāja sevamāno drutaṁ yayau.
18. candana-aguru-mukhyāni tvak-patrāṇām vanāni ca
tasmin pathi mahārāja sevamānaḥ drutam yayau
18. mahārāja tasmin pathi candana-aguru-mukhyāni
ca tvak-patrāṇām vanāni sevamānaḥ drutam yayau
18. O great king, he quickly went along that path, traversing forests where sandalwood and aguru trees were prominent, along with those bearing various barks and leaves.
ततो मेरुव्रजं नाम नगरं शैलतोरणम् ।
शैलप्राकारवप्रं च शैलयन्त्रार्गलं तथा ॥१९॥
19. tato meruvrajaṁ nāma nagaraṁ śailatoraṇam ,
śailaprākāravapraṁ ca śailayantrārgalaṁ tathā.
19. tataḥ meruvrajam nāma nagaram śailatoraṇam
śailaprākāravapram ca śailayantrārgalm tathā
19. tataḥ nagaram meruvrajam nāma śailatoraṇam
śailaprākāravapram ca tathā śailayantrārgalm
19. Then, (he reached) a city named Meruvraja, which possessed gates made of rock, walls and ramparts made of rock, and similarly, mechanical bolts and defenses made of rock.
विदितश्चाभवत्तस्य राक्षसेन्द्रस्य धीमतः ।
प्रहितः सुहृदा राजन्प्रीयता वै प्रियातिथिः ॥२०॥
20. viditaścābhavattasya rākṣasendrasya dhīmataḥ ,
prahitaḥ suhṛdā rājanprīyatā vai priyātithiḥ.
20. viditaḥ ca abhavat tasya rākṣasendrasya dhīmataḥ
prahitaḥ suhṛdā rājan prīyatā vai priyātithiḥ
20. rājan ca tasya dhīmataḥ rākṣasendrasya viditaḥ
abhavat prahitaḥ suhṛdā priyātithiḥ vai prīyatā
20. And it became known to that intelligent king of Rākṣasas (Rākṣasendra), O king, that one sent by a friend, indeed a dear guest, had arrived with favor.
ततः स राक्षसेन्द्रः स्वान्प्रेष्यानाह युधिष्ठिर ।
गौतमो नगरद्वाराच्छीघ्रमानीयतामिति ॥२१॥
21. tataḥ sa rākṣasendraḥ svānpreṣyānāha yudhiṣṭhira ,
gautamo nagaradvārācchīghramānīyatāmiti.
21. tataḥ saḥ rākṣasendraḥ svān preṣyān āha yudhiṣṭhira
gautamaḥ nagaradvārāt śīghram ānīyatām iti
21. yudhiṣṭhira tataḥ saḥ rākṣasendraḥ svān preṣyān
āha gautamaḥ nagaradvārāt śīghram ānīyatām iti
21. Then, O Yudhiṣṭhira, that king of Rākṣasas (Rākṣasendra) said to his own servants: 'Let Gautama be brought quickly from the city gate!'
ततः पुरवरात्तस्मात्पुरुषाः श्वेतवेष्टनाः ।
गौतमेत्यभिभाषन्तः पुरद्वारमुपागमन् ॥२२॥
22. tataḥ puravarāttasmātpuruṣāḥ śvetaveṣṭanāḥ ,
gautametyabhibhāṣantaḥ puradvāramupāgaman.
22. tataḥ puravarāt tasmāt puruṣāḥ śvetaveṣṭanāḥ
gautama iti abhibhāṣantaḥ puradvāram upāgaman
22. tataḥ tasmāt puravarāt śvetaveṣṭanāḥ puruṣāḥ
gautama iti abhibhāṣantaḥ puradvāram upāgaman
22. Then, from that splendid city, men dressed in white garments approached the city gate, calling out, "Gautama!"
ते तमूचुर्महाराज प्रेष्या रक्षःपतेर्द्विजम् ।
त्वरस्व तूर्णमागच्छ राजा त्वां द्रष्टुमिच्छति ॥२३॥
23. te tamūcurmahārāja preṣyā rakṣaḥpaterdvijam ,
tvarasva tūrṇamāgaccha rājā tvāṁ draṣṭumicchati.
23. te tam ūcuḥ mahārāja preṣyāḥ rakṣaḥpateḥ dvijam
tvarasva tūrṇam āgaccha rājā tvām draṣṭum icchati
23. te rakṣaḥpateḥ preṣyāḥ tam dvijam ūcuḥ mahārāja
tvarasva tūrṇam āgaccha rājā tvām draṣṭum icchati
23. They said to him, "O venerable one, we are messengers of the lord of the Rākṣasas (rakṣas). Hurry, come quickly! The king wishes to see you."
राक्षसाधिपतिर्वीरो विरूपाक्ष इति श्रुतः ।
स त्वां त्वरति वै द्रष्टुं तत्क्षिप्रं संविधीयताम् ॥२४॥
24. rākṣasādhipatirvīro virūpākṣa iti śrutaḥ ,
sa tvāṁ tvarati vai draṣṭuṁ tatkṣipraṁ saṁvidhīyatām.
24. rākṣasādhipatiḥ vīraḥ virūpākṣaḥ iti śrutaḥ saḥ
tvām tvarati vai draṣṭum tat kṣipram saṃvidhīyatām
24. vīraḥ rākṣasādhipatiḥ virūpākṣaḥ iti śrutaḥ saḥ
vai tvām draṣṭum tvarati tat kṣipram saṃvidhīyatām
24. The valiant lord of the Rākṣasas (rakṣas), known as Virūpākṣa, is eager to see you. Therefore, let arrangements be made quickly.
ततः स प्राद्रवद्विप्रो विस्मयाद्विगतक्लमः ।
गौतमो नगरर्द्धिं तां पश्यन्परमविस्मितः ॥२५॥
25. tataḥ sa prādravadvipro vismayādvigataklamaḥ ,
gautamo nagararddhiṁ tāṁ paśyanparamavismitaḥ.
25. tataḥ saḥ prādravat vipraḥ vismayāt vigataklamaḥ
gautamaḥ nagararddhim tām paśyan paramavismitaḥ
25. tataḥ saḥ vipraḥ gautamaḥ vismayāt vigataklamaḥ
tām nagararddhim paśyan paramavismitaḥ prādravat
25. Then that Brahmin (dvija), Gautama, free from weariness due to his astonishment, hurried forth, utterly amazed as he gazed upon the splendor of that city.
तैरेव सहितो राज्ञो वेश्म तूर्णमुपाद्रवत् ।
दर्शनं राक्षसेन्द्रस्य काङ्क्षमाणो द्विजस्तदा ॥२६॥
26. taireva sahito rājño veśma tūrṇamupādravat ,
darśanaṁ rākṣasendrasya kāṅkṣamāṇo dvijastadā.
26. taiḥ eva sahitaḥ rājñaḥ veśma tūrṇam upādravat
darśanam rākṣasendrasya kāṅkṣamāṇaḥ dvijaḥ tadā
26. tadā taiḥ eva sahitaḥ dvijaḥ rākṣasendrasya
darśanam kāṅkṣamāṇaḥ rājñaḥ veśma tūrṇam upādravat
26. Then, accompanied by them, the Brahmin (dvija), desiring an audience with the lord of the Rākṣasas, quickly approached the king's palace.
