शिशुपाल उवाच ।
स मे बहुमतो राजा जरासंधो महाबलः ।
योऽनेन युद्धं नेयेष दासोऽयमिति संयुगे ॥१॥
1. śiśupāla uvāca ,
sa me bahumato rājā jarāsaṁdho mahābalaḥ ,
yo'nena yuddhaṁ neyeṣa dāso'yamiti saṁyuge.

yaḥ anena yuddham na īyeṣa dāsaḥ ayam iti saṃyuge
1. Shishupala said: 'That very powerful King Jarasandha, whom I highly esteemed, did not wish to fight this one (Krishna) in battle, considering, "This one is merely a servant."'
केशवेन कृतं यत्तु जरासंधवधे तदा ।
भीमसेनार्जुनाभ्यां च कस्तत्साध्विति मन्यते ॥२॥
2. keśavena kṛtaṁ yattu jarāsaṁdhavadhe tadā ,
bhīmasenārjunābhyāṁ ca kastatsādhviti manyate.

bhīmasenārjunābhyām ca kaḥ tat sādhu iti manyate
2. Who would consider proper that action which Keśava, accompanied by Bhīmasena and Arjuna, undertook at that time for the slaying of Jarāsandha?
अद्वारेण प्रविष्टेन छद्मना ब्रह्मवादिना ।
दृष्टः प्रभावः कृष्णेन जरासंधस्य धीमतः ॥३॥
3. advāreṇa praviṣṭena chadmanā brahmavādinā ,
dṛṣṭaḥ prabhāvaḥ kṛṣṇena jarāsaṁdhasya dhīmataḥ.
3. advāreṇa praviṣṭena chadmanā brahmavādinā
dṛṣṭaḥ prabhāvaḥ kṛṣṇena jarāsaṃdhasya dhīmataḥ
3. Kṛṣṇa, having entered through an improper means and by deceit, posing as a speaker of brahman (brahmavādin), observed the power of the intelligent Jarāsandha.
येन धर्मात्मनात्मानं ब्रह्मण्यमभिजानता ।
नैषितं पाद्यमस्मै तद्दातुमग्रे दुरात्मने ॥४॥
4. yena dharmātmanātmānaṁ brahmaṇyamabhijānatā ,
naiṣitaṁ pādyamasmai taddātumagre durātmane.
4. yena dharmātmanā ātmānam brahmaṇyam abhijānatā
na eṣitam pādyam asmai tat dātum agre durātmane
4. By whom (Kṛṣṇa), who possessed a righteous nature (dharma) and considered himself (ātman) to be devoted to brahman (brahmaṇya), the ceremonial foot-water was not desired to be offered to that evil-minded one (durātman) in his presence.
भुज्यतामिति तेनोक्ताः कृष्णभीमधनंजयाः ।
जरासंधेन कौरव्य कृष्णेन विकृतं कृतम् ॥५॥
5. bhujyatāmiti tenoktāḥ kṛṣṇabhīmadhanaṁjayāḥ ,
jarāsaṁdhena kauravya kṛṣṇena vikṛtaṁ kṛtam.
5. bhujyatām iti tena uktāḥ kṛṣṇabhīmadhanaṃjayāḥ
jarāsaṃdhena kauravya kṛṣṇena vikṛtaṃ kṛtam
5. Jarāsandha addressed Kṛṣṇa, Bhīma, and Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) with the words, 'Let food be enjoyed!' O descendant of Kuru (kauravya), Kṛṣṇa acted improperly.
यद्ययं जगतः कर्ता यथैनं मूर्ख मन्यसे ।
कस्मान्न ब्राह्मणं सम्यगात्मानमवगच्छति ॥६॥
6. yadyayaṁ jagataḥ kartā yathainaṁ mūrkha manyase ,
kasmānna brāhmaṇaṁ samyagātmānamavagacchati.
6. yat ayam jagataḥ kartā yathā enam mūrkha manyase
kasmāt na brāhmaṇam samyak ātmanam avagacchati
6. If this person is the creator of the world, as you foolishly believe him to be, then why does he not properly understand his own divine self (ātman)?
इदं त्वाश्चर्यभूतं मे यदिमे पाण्डवास्त्वया ।
अपकृष्टाः सतां मार्गान्मन्यन्ते तच्च साध्विति ॥७॥
7. idaṁ tvāścaryabhūtaṁ me yadime pāṇḍavāstvayā ,
apakṛṣṭāḥ satāṁ mārgānmanyante tacca sādhviti.
7. idam tu āścaryabhūtam me yat ime pāṇḍavāḥ tvayā
apakṛṣṭāḥ satām mārgāt manyante tat ca sādhu iti
7. What is truly astonishing to me is that these Pandavas, despite being led astray by you from the path of virtuous people, consider that to be proper.
अथ वा नैतदाश्चर्यं येषां त्वमसि भारत ।
स्त्रीसधर्मा च वृद्धश्च सर्वार्थानां प्रदर्शकः ॥८॥
8. atha vā naitadāścaryaṁ yeṣāṁ tvamasi bhārata ,
strīsadharmā ca vṛddhaśca sarvārthānāṁ pradarśakaḥ.
8. atha vā na etat āścaryam yeṣām tvam asi bhārata
strīsadharmaḥ ca vṛddhaḥ ca sarvārthānām pradarśakaḥ
8. Or rather, this is not surprising, O Bhārata, for those whose leader you are - you who are effeminate, and old, yet claim to be the guide for all objectives.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा रूक्षं रूक्षाक्षरं बहु ।
चुकोप बलिनां श्रेष्ठो भीमसेनः प्रतापवान् ॥९॥
9. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā rūkṣaṁ rūkṣākṣaraṁ bahu ,
cukopa balināṁ śreṣṭho bhīmasenaḥ pratāpavān.
9. vaiśampāyana uvāca tasya tat vacanam śrutvā rūkṣam
rūkṣākṣaram bahu cukopa balinām śreṣṭhaḥ bhīmasenaḥ pratāpavān
9. Vaiśaṁpāyana said: Having heard that speech of his, which was crude, filled with many harsh words, Bhīmasena, the foremost among the powerful and mighty, became enraged.
तस्य पद्मप्रतीकाशे स्वभावायतविस्तृते ।
भूयः क्रोधाभिताम्रान्ते रक्ते नेत्रे बभूवतुः ॥१०॥
10. tasya padmapratīkāśe svabhāvāyatavistṛte ,
bhūyaḥ krodhābhitāmrānte rakte netre babhūvatuḥ.
10. tasya padmapratīkāśe svabhāvāyatavistṛte bhūyaḥ
krodhābhitāmrānte rakte netre babhūvatuḥ
10. His two eyes, naturally long and wide and resembling lotuses, became further reddened, their corners flushed crimson with anger.
त्रिशिखां भ्रुकुटीं चास्य ददृशुः सर्वपार्थिवाः ।
ललाटस्थां त्रिकूटस्थां गङ्गां त्रिपथगामिव ॥११॥
11. triśikhāṁ bhrukuṭīṁ cāsya dadṛśuḥ sarvapārthivāḥ ,
lalāṭasthāṁ trikūṭasthāṁ gaṅgāṁ tripathagāmiva.
11. triśikhām bhrukuṭīm ca asya dadṛśuḥ sarvapārthivāḥ
lalāṭasthām trikūṭasthām gaṅgām tripathagām iva
11. All the kings saw his three-pointed frown on his forehead, which appeared like the Gaṅgā (Gaṅgā) situated on Mount Trikūṭa and flowing in three streams.
दन्तान्संदशतस्तस्य कोपाद्ददृशुराननम् ।
युगान्ते सर्वभूतानि कालस्येव दिधक्षतः ॥१२॥
12. dantānsaṁdaśatastasya kopāddadṛśurānanam ,
yugānte sarvabhūtāni kālasyeva didhakṣataḥ.
12. dantān saṃdaśataḥ tasya kopāt dadṛśuḥ ānanam
yugānte sarvabhūtāni kālasya iva didhakṣataḥ
12. They saw his face, as he gnashed his teeth in anger, resembling the face of Time (kāla) at the end of a cosmic age (yuga), intent on consuming all beings.
उत्पतन्तं तु वेगेन जग्राहैनं मनस्विनम् ।
भीष्म एव महाबाहुर्महासेनमिवेश्वरः ॥१३॥
13. utpatantaṁ tu vegena jagrāhainaṁ manasvinam ,
bhīṣma eva mahābāhurmahāsenamiveśvaraḥ.
13. utpatantam tu vegena jagrāha enam manasvinam
bhīṣmaḥ eva mahābāhuḥ mahāsenam iva īśvaraḥ
13. But the mighty-armed Bhīṣma indeed seized that spirited man as he surged forward with great force, just as Lord Īśvara (Īśvara) seized Mahāsena (Mahāsena).
तस्य भीमस्य भीष्मेण वार्यमाणस्य भारत ।
गुरुणा विविधैर्वाक्यैः क्रोधः प्रशममागतः ॥१४॥
14. tasya bhīmasya bhīṣmeṇa vāryamāṇasya bhārata ,
guruṇā vividhairvākyaiḥ krodhaḥ praśamamāgataḥ.
14. tasya bhīmasya bhīṣmeṇa vāryamāṇasya bhārata
guruṇā vividhaiḥ vākyaiḥ krodhaḥ praśamam āgataḥ
14. O descendant of Bharata, when that Bhima was being restrained by Bhishma, his venerable elder, with various words, his anger subsided.
नातिचक्राम भीष्मस्य स हि वाक्यमरिंदमः ।
समुद्धूतो घनापाये वेलामिव महोदधिः ॥१५॥
15. nāticakrāma bhīṣmasya sa hi vākyamariṁdamaḥ ,
samuddhūto ghanāpāye velāmiva mahodadhiḥ.
15. na aticakrāma bhīṣmasya sa hi vākyam ariṃdamaḥ
samuddhūtaḥ ghanāpāye velām iva mahodadhiḥ
15. O vanquisher of foes, he (Bhima) indeed did not transgress Bhishma's command, just as the great ocean, stirred up at the end of the monsoon season, does not overstep its shore.
शिशुपालस्तु संक्रुद्धे भीमसेने नराधिप ।
नाकम्पत तदा वीरः पौरुषे स्वे व्यवस्थितः ॥१६॥
16. śiśupālastu saṁkruddhe bhīmasene narādhipa ,
nākampata tadā vīraḥ pauruṣe sve vyavasthitaḥ.
16. śiśupālaḥ tu saṃkruddhe bhīmasene narādhipa na
akampata tadā vīraḥ pauruṣe sve vyavasthitaḥ
16. But, O king of men, when Bhimasena was greatly enraged, that hero Shishupala did not tremble at that time, remaining steadfast in his own valor.
उत्पतन्तं तु वेगेन पुनः पुनररिंदमः ।
न स तं चिन्तयामास सिंहः क्षुद्रमृगं यथा ॥१७॥
17. utpatantaṁ tu vegena punaḥ punarariṁdamaḥ ,
na sa taṁ cintayāmāsa siṁhaḥ kṣudramṛgaṁ yathā.
17. utpatantam tu vegena punaḥ punaḥ ariṃdamaḥ na
sa tam cintayāmāsa siṃhaḥ kṣudramṛgam yathā
17. But, O vanquisher of foes, he (Shishupala) did not bother about him (Bhima) who was repeatedly leaping up with great force, just as a lion does not concern itself with a small animal.
प्रहसंश्चाब्रवीद्वाक्यं चेदिराजः प्रतापवान् ।
भीमसेनमतिक्रुद्धं दृष्ट्वा भीमपराक्रमम् ॥१८॥
18. prahasaṁścābravīdvākyaṁ cedirājaḥ pratāpavān ,
bhīmasenamatikruddhaṁ dṛṣṭvā bhīmaparākramam.
18. prahasan ca abravīt vākyam cedirājaḥ pratāpavān
bhīmasenam atikruddham dṛṣṭvā bhīmaparākramam
18. The mighty King of Cedi, seeing Bhimasena exceedingly enraged and possessing terrible valor, spoke these words while laughing.
मुञ्चैनं भीष्म पश्यन्तु यावदेनं नराधिपाः ।
मत्प्रतापाग्निनिर्दग्धं पतंगमिव वह्निना ॥१९॥
19. muñcainaṁ bhīṣma paśyantu yāvadenaṁ narādhipāḥ ,
matpratāpāgninirdagdhaṁ pataṁgamiva vahninā.
19. muñca enam bhīṣma paśyantu yāvat enam narādhipāḥ
matpratāpāgninirdagdham pataṅgam iva vahninā
19. "O Bhishma, release him! Let these kings see him, burnt by the fire of my valor, just like a moth consumed by fire."
ततश्चेदिपतेर्वाक्यं तच्छ्रुत्वा कुरुसत्तमः ।
भीमसेनमुवाचेदं भीष्मो मतिमतां वरः ॥२०॥
20. tataścedipatervākyaṁ tacchrutvā kurusattamaḥ ,
bhīmasenamuvācedaṁ bhīṣmo matimatāṁ varaḥ.
20. tataḥ cedipateḥ vākyam tat śrutvā kurusattamaḥ
bhīmasenam uvāca idam bhīṣmaḥ matimatām varaḥ
20. Then, having heard those words of the King of Cedi, Bhishma, the best of the Kurus and the foremost among the intelligent, said this to Bhimasena.
