वैशंपायन उवाच ।
विदुरस्य तु तद्वाक्यं निशम्य कुरुसत्तमः ।
पुत्रशोकाभिसंतप्तः पपात भुवि मूर्छितः ॥१॥

vidurasya tu tadvākyaṁ niśamya kurusattamaḥ ,
putraśokābhisaṁtaptaḥ papāta bhuvi mūrchitaḥ.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: But the foremost of the Kurus (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), having heard those words of Vidura, fell to the ground unconscious, deeply tormented by grief for his sons.
तं तथा पतितं भूमौ निःसंज्ञं प्रेक्ष्य बान्धवाः ।
कृष्णद्वैपायनश्चैव क्षत्ता च विदुरस्तथा ॥२॥
2. taṁ tathā patitaṁ bhūmau niḥsaṁjñaṁ prekṣya bāndhavāḥ ,
kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaścaiva kṣattā ca vidurastathā.
2. tam tathā patitam bhūmau niḥsaṃjñam prekṣya bāndhavāḥ

2. Having seen him thus fallen unconscious on the ground, his relatives, Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana (Vyāsa), and also Vidura, the Kṣattā (minister).
संजयः सुहृदश्चान्ये द्वाःस्था ये चास्य संमताः ।
जलेन सुखशीतेन तालवृन्तैश्च भारत ॥३॥
3. saṁjayaḥ suhṛdaścānye dvāḥsthā ye cāsya saṁmatāḥ ,
jalena sukhaśītena tālavṛntaiśca bhārata.

3. Saṃjaya, other friends, and those doorkeepers who were respected by him, (all revived him) with pleasantly cool water and palm-leaf fans, O Bhārata.
पस्पृशुश्च करैर्गात्रं वीजमानाश्च यत्नतः ।
अन्वासन्सुचिरं कालं धृतराष्ट्रं तथागतम् ॥४॥
4. paspṛśuśca karairgātraṁ vījamānāśca yatnataḥ ,
anvāsansuciraṁ kālaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ tathāgatam.
4. paspṛśuḥ ca karaiḥ gātram vījamānāḥ ca yatnataḥ
anvāsan suciram kālam dhṛtarāṣṭram tathāgatam

4. And they touched his body with their hands, fanning him diligently. For a long time, they remained around Dhritarashtra, who was in that state (of unconsciousness).
अथ दीर्घस्य कालस्य लब्धसंज्ञो महीपतिः ।
विललाप चिरं कालं पुत्राधिभिरभिप्लुतः ॥५॥
5. atha dīrghasya kālasya labdhasaṁjño mahīpatiḥ ,
vilalāpa ciraṁ kālaṁ putrādhibhirabhiplutaḥ.

vilalāpa ciram kālam putrādhibhiḥ abhiplutaḥ

5. Then, after a long time, the lord of the earth, having regained consciousness, lamented for a long time, deluged by the distress caused by his sons.
धिगस्तु खलु मानुष्यं मानुष्ये च परिग्रहम् ।
यतोमूलानि दुःखानि संभवन्ति मुहुर्मुहुः ॥६॥
6. dhigastu khalu mānuṣyaṁ mānuṣye ca parigraham ,
yatomūlāni duḥkhāni saṁbhavanti muhurmuhuḥ.
6. dhik astu khalu mānuṣyam mānuṣye ca parigraham
yatomūlāni duḥkhāni saṃbhavanti muhurmuhuḥ
6. khalu mānuṣyam dhik astu ca mānuṣye parigraham (dhik

6. Shame on human existence, and on attachment to possessions in human life! From which sorrows repeatedly originate.
पुत्रनाशेऽर्थनाशे च ज्ञातिसंबन्धिनामपि ।
प्राप्यते सुमहद्दुःखं विषाग्निप्रतिमं विभो ॥७॥
7. putranāśe'rthanāśe ca jñātisaṁbandhināmapi ,
prāpyate sumahadduḥkhaṁ viṣāgnipratimaṁ vibho.
7. putranāśe arthanāśe ca jñātisaṃbandhinām api
prāpyate sumahat duḥkham viṣāgnipratimam vibho
7. vibho putranāśe ca arthanāśe api jñātisaṃbandhinām (nāśe),
viṣāgnipratimam sumahat duḥkham prāpyate
7. In the loss of sons, the loss of wealth, and even of kinsmen and relatives, a very great sorrow is experienced, which is like a fire of poison, O Lord!
येन दह्यन्ति गात्राणि येन प्रज्ञा विनश्यति ।
येनाभिभूतः पुरुषो मरणं बहु मन्यते ॥८॥
8. yena dahyanti gātrāṇi yena prajñā vinaśyati ,
yenābhibhūtaḥ puruṣo maraṇaṁ bahu manyate.

yena abhibhūtaḥ puruṣaḥ maraṇam bahu manyate

8. That by which the limbs are scorched, by which the intellect is destroyed, and by which a person (puruṣa), being overwhelmed, greatly desires death.
तदिदं व्यसनं प्राप्तं मया भाग्यविपर्ययात् ।
तच्चैवाहं करिष्यामि अद्यैव द्विजसत्तम ॥९॥
9. tadidaṁ vyasanaṁ prāptaṁ mayā bhāgyaviparyayāt ,
taccaivāhaṁ kariṣyāmi adyaiva dvijasattama.
9. tat idam vyasanam prāptam mayā bhāgyaviparyayāt
tat ca eva aham kariṣyāmi adya eva dvijasattama
9. mayā bhāgyaviparyayāt tat idam vyasanam prāptam,
ca dvijasattama aham tat eva adya eva kariṣyāmi
9. This very calamity has befallen me due to a reversal of fortune. And indeed, O best among the twice-born (dvija), I shall accomplish that very thing today.
इत्युक्त्वा तु महात्मानं पितरं ब्रह्मवित्तमम् ।
धृतराष्ट्रोऽभवन्मूढः शोकं च परमं गतः ।
अभूच्च तूष्णीं राजासौ ध्यायमानो महीपते ॥१०॥
10. ityuktvā tu mahātmānaṁ pitaraṁ brahmavittamam ,
dhṛtarāṣṭro'bhavanmūḍhaḥ śokaṁ ca paramaṁ gataḥ ,
abhūcca tūṣṇīṁ rājāsau dhyāyamāno mahīpate.
10. iti uktvā tu mahātmānam pitaram
brahmavittamam dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ abhavat mūḍhaḥ
śokam ca paramam gataḥ abhūt ca
tūṣṇīm rājā asau dhyāyamānaḥ mahīpate
10. iti uktvā tu mahātmānam pitaram
brahmavittamam dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ mūḍhaḥ abhavat
ca paramam śokam gataḥ ca asau rājā
dhyāyamānaḥ tūṣṇīm abhūt mahīpate
10. Having spoken thus to his great-souled father, the foremost knower of Brahman (brahman), Dhṛtarāṣṭra became bewildered and was overcome by immense sorrow (śoka). That king then fell silent, lost in contemplation, O ruler of the earth (mahīpate).
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा कृष्णद्वैपायनः प्रभुः ।
पुत्रशोकाभिसंतप्तं पुत्रं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥११॥
11. tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaḥ prabhuḥ ,
putraśokābhisaṁtaptaṁ putraṁ vacanamabravīt.
11. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaḥ prabhuḥ
putraśokābhisantaptam putram vacanam abravīt
11. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā prabhuḥ kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaḥ
putraśokābhisantaptam putram vacanam abravīt
11. Having heard his words, the revered Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana (Vyāsa), the lord, spoke to his son, who was deeply afflicted by the sorrow for his children (śoka).
धृतराष्ट्र महाबाहो यत्त्वां वक्ष्यामि तच्छृणु ।
श्रुतवानसि मेधावी धर्मार्थकुशलस्तथा ॥१२॥
12. dhṛtarāṣṭra mahābāho yattvāṁ vakṣyāmi tacchṛṇu ,
śrutavānasi medhāvī dharmārthakuśalastathā.
12. dhṛtarāṣṭra mahābāho yat tvām vakṣyāmi tat śṛṇu
śrutavān asi medhāvī dharmārthakuśalaḥ tathā
12. mahābāho dhṛtarāṣṭra yat tvām vakṣyāmi tat śṛṇu
śrutavān medhāvī tathā dharmārthakuśalaḥ asi
12. O mighty-armed Dhritarashtra, listen to what I am about to tell you. You are learned, intelligent, and skilled in matters of natural law (dharma) and material prosperity.
न तेऽस्त्यविदितं किंचिद्वेदितव्यं परंतप ।
अनित्यतां हि मर्त्यानां विजानासि न संशयः ॥१३॥
13. na te'styaviditaṁ kiṁcidveditavyaṁ paraṁtapa ,
anityatāṁ hi martyānāṁ vijānāsi na saṁśayaḥ.
13. na te asti aviditam kiṃcit veditavyam paraṃtapa
anityatām hi martyānām vijānāsi na saṃśayaḥ
13. paraṃtapa te kiṃcit veditavyam aviditam na asti
hi martyānām anityatām vijānāsi na saṃśayaḥ
13. O tormentor of foes, nothing that ought to be known remains unknown to you. Indeed, you truly understand the impermanence of mortals; there is no doubt about it.
अध्रुवे जीवलोके च स्थाने वाशाश्वते सति ।
जीविते मरणान्ते च कस्माच्छोचसि भारत ॥१४॥
14. adhruve jīvaloke ca sthāne vāśāśvate sati ,
jīvite maraṇānte ca kasmācchocasi bhārata.
14. adhruve jīvaloke ca sthāne vā aśāśvate sati
jīvite maraṇānte ca kasmāt śocasi bhārata
14. bhārata adhruve jīvaloke ca aśāśvate vā
sthāne sati ca maraṇānte jīvite kasmāt śocasi
14. O scion of Bharata, in this transient world of living beings, and in a realm that is not eternal, and in a life that culminates in death, why do you lament?
प्रत्यक्षं तव राजेन्द्र वैरस्यास्य समुद्भवः ।
पुत्रं ते कारणं कृत्वा कालयोगेन कारितः ॥१५॥
15. pratyakṣaṁ tava rājendra vairasyāsya samudbhavaḥ ,
putraṁ te kāraṇaṁ kṛtvā kālayogena kāritaḥ.
15. pratyakṣam tava rājendra vairasya asya samudbhavaḥ
putram te kāraṇam kṛtvā kālayogena kāritaḥ
15. rājendra asya vairasya samudbhavaḥ tava pratyakṣam
te putram kāraṇam kṛtvā kālayogena kāritaḥ
15. O king of kings, the origin of this hostility is evident to you. It was brought about by the conjunction of time (kāla), with your son being made the primary reason.
अवश्यं भवितव्ये च कुरूणां वैशसे नृप ।
कस्माच्छोचसि ताञ्शूरान्गतान्परमिकां गतिम् ॥१६॥
16. avaśyaṁ bhavitavye ca kurūṇāṁ vaiśase nṛpa ,
kasmācchocasi tāñśūrāngatānparamikāṁ gatim.
16. avaśyam bhavitavye ca kurūṇām vaiśase nṛpa
kasmāt śocasi tān śūrān gatān paramikām gatim
16. nṛpa kurūṇām vaiśase avaśyam bhavitavye ca
kasmāt tān śūrān paramikām gatim gatān śocasi
16. O King, when the destruction of the Kurus was inevitable, why do you grieve for those brave warriors who have attained the ultimate state (gati)?
जानता च महाबाहो विदुरेण महात्मना ।
यतितं सर्वयत्नेन शमं प्रति जनेश्वर ॥१७॥
17. jānatā ca mahābāho vidureṇa mahātmanā ,
yatitaṁ sarvayatnena śamaṁ prati janeśvara.

yatitam sarvayatnena śamam prati janeśvara
17. mahābāho janeśvara jānatā ca mahātmanā
vidureṇa sarvayatnena śamam prati yatitam
17. O mighty-armed one, O lord of men, the great-souled (mahātman) Vidura, who knew (the future), indeed strove with every effort for peace.
न च दैवकृतो मार्गः शक्यो भूतेन केनचित् ।
घटतापि चिरं कालं नियन्तुमिति मे मतिः ॥१८॥
18. na ca daivakṛto mārgaḥ śakyo bhūtena kenacit ,
ghaṭatāpi ciraṁ kālaṁ niyantumiti me matiḥ.
18. na ca daivakṛtaḥ mārgaḥ śakyaḥ bhūtena kenacit
ghaṭatā api ciram kālam niyantum iti me matiḥ
18. ca daivakṛtaḥ mārgaḥ bhūtena kenacit ciram kālam
ghaṭatā api niyantum na śakyaḥ iti me matiḥ
18. And the course (karma) ordained by divine destiny cannot be controlled by any being, even if one strives for a long time. This is my conviction.
देवतानां हि यत्कार्यं मया प्रत्यक्षतः श्रुतम् ।
तत्तेऽहं संप्रवक्ष्यामि कथं स्थैर्यं भवेत्तव ॥१९॥
19. devatānāṁ hi yatkāryaṁ mayā pratyakṣataḥ śrutam ,
tatte'haṁ saṁpravakṣyāmi kathaṁ sthairyaṁ bhavettava.
19. devatānām hi yat kāryam mayā pratyakṣataḥ śrutam tat
te aham sampravakṣyāmi katham sthairyam bhavet tava
19. hi devatānām yat kāryam mayā pratyakṣataḥ śrutam tat
aham te sampravakṣyāmi tava sthairyam katham bhavet
19. Indeed, I will fully relate to you that work of the gods which I have directly heard, explaining how you can achieve steadfastness.
पुराहं त्वरितो यातः सभामैन्द्रीं जितक्लमः ।
अपश्यं तत्र च तदा समवेतान्दिवौकसः ।
नारदप्रमुखांश्चापि सर्वान्देवऋषींस्तथा ॥२०॥
20. purāhaṁ tvarito yātaḥ sabhāmaindrīṁ jitaklamaḥ ,
apaśyaṁ tatra ca tadā samavetāndivaukasaḥ ,
nāradapramukhāṁścāpi sarvāndevaṛṣīṁstathā.
20. purā aham tvaritaḥ yātaḥ sabhām
aindrīm jitaklamaḥ apaśyam tatra ca
tadā samavetān divaukasaḥ nāradapramukhān
ca api sarvān devarṣīn tathā
20. purā jitaklamaḥ aham tvaritaḥ aindrīm
sabhām yātaḥ tatra ca tadā
samavetān divaukasaḥ ca nāradapramukhān
api sarvān devarṣīn tathā apaśyam
20. Formerly, having overcome fatigue, I swiftly went to Indra's assembly. There, at that time, I saw the assembled dwellers of heaven, and also all the divine sages headed by Narada.
तत्र चापि मया दृष्टा पृथिवी पृथिवीपते ।
कार्यार्थमुपसंप्राप्ता देवतानां समीपतः ॥२१॥
21. tatra cāpi mayā dṛṣṭā pṛthivī pṛthivīpate ,
kāryārthamupasaṁprāptā devatānāṁ samīpataḥ.
21. tatra ca api mayā dṛṣṭā pṛthivī pṛthivīpate
kāryārtham upasaṃprāptā devatānām समीपतः
21. pṛthivīpate,
tatra ca api mayā devatānām samīpataḥ kāryārtham upasaṃprāptā pṛthivī dṛṣṭā
21. And there, O lord of the Earth, I also saw the Earth (Pṛthivī), who had arrived near the gods for a particular purpose.
उपगम्य तदा धात्री देवानाह समागतान् ।
यत्कार्यं मम युष्माभिर्ब्रह्मणः सदने तदा ।
प्रतिज्ञातं महाभागास्तच्छीघ्रं संविधीयताम् ॥२२॥
22. upagamya tadā dhātrī devānāha samāgatān ,
yatkāryaṁ mama yuṣmābhirbrahmaṇaḥ sadane tadā ,
pratijñātaṁ mahābhāgāstacchīghraṁ saṁvidhīyatām.
22. upagamya tadā dhātrī devān āha
samāgatān yat kāryam mama yuṣmābhiḥ
brahmaṇaḥ sadane tadā pratijñātam
mahābhāgāḥ tat śīghram saṃvidhīyatām
22. tadā dhātrī upagamya samāgatān devān āha (he) mahābhāgāḥ,
yuṣmābhiḥ brahmaṇaḥ sadane tadā mama yat kāryam pratijñātam,
tat śīghram saṃvidhīyatām
22. Having approached them then, the Earth (Dhātrī) addressed the assembled gods: 'O noble ones, that task which you had promised me in Brahmā's (brahman) abode then, let it be accomplished quickly!'
तस्यास्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा विष्णुर्लोकनमस्कृतः ।
उवाच प्रहसन्वाक्यं पृथिवीं देवसंसदि ॥२३॥
23. tasyāstadvacanaṁ śrutvā viṣṇurlokanamaskṛtaḥ ,
uvāca prahasanvākyaṁ pṛthivīṁ devasaṁsadi.
23. tasyāḥ tat vacanam śrutvā viṣṇuḥ lokanamaskṛtaḥ
uvāca prahasan vākyam pṛthivīm devasaṃsadi
23. tasyāḥ tat vacanam śrutvā,
lokanamaskṛtaḥ viṣṇuḥ devasaṃsadi prahasan pṛthivīm vākyam uvāca
23. Having heard her words, Vishnu, who is revered by the worlds, spoke to the Earth with a smile in the assembly of the gods.
धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्राणां यस्तु ज्येष्ठः शतस्य वै ।
दुर्योधन इति ख्यातः स ते कार्यं करिष्यति ।
तं च प्राप्य महीपालं कृतकृत्या भविष्यसि ॥२४॥
24. dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putrāṇāṁ yastu jyeṣṭhaḥ śatasya vai ,
duryodhana iti khyātaḥ sa te kāryaṁ kariṣyati ,
taṁ ca prāpya mahīpālaṁ kṛtakṛtyā bhaviṣyasi.
24. dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putrāṇām yaḥ tu jyeṣṭhaḥ
śatasya vai duryodhana iti
khyātaḥ saḥ te kāryam kariṣyati tam ca
prāpya mahīpālam kṛtakṛtyā bhaviṣyasi
24. yaḥ tu dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putrāṇām śatasya
jyeṣṭhaḥ iti duryodhanaḥ khyātaḥ
saḥ vai te kāryam kariṣyati ca tam
mahīpālam prāpya kṛtakṛtyā bhaviṣyasi
24. The one among Dhritarashtra's sons who is indeed the eldest of the hundred, known as Duryodhana, he will accomplish your purpose. And by obtaining that king, you will become one whose purpose is accomplished.
तस्यार्थे पृथिवीपालाः कुरुक्षेत्रे समागताः ।
अन्योन्यं घातयिष्यन्ति दृढैः शस्त्रैः प्रहारिणः ॥२५॥
25. tasyārthe pṛthivīpālāḥ kurukṣetre samāgatāḥ ,
anyonyaṁ ghātayiṣyanti dṛḍhaiḥ śastraiḥ prahāriṇaḥ.
25. tasya arthe pṛthivīpālāḥ kurukṣetre samāgatāḥ
anyonyam ghātayiṣyanti dṛḍhaiḥ śastraiḥ prahāriṇaḥ
25. tasya arthe kurukṣetre pṛthivīpālāḥ samāgatāḥ
dṛḍhaiḥ śastraiḥ prahāriṇaḥ anyonyam ghātayiṣyanti
25. For her sake, kings (protectors of the earth) will assemble on Kurukshetra. Striking with strong weapons, they will slay each other.
ततस्ते भविता देवि भारस्य युधि नाशनम् ।
गच्छ शीघ्रं स्वकं स्थानं लोकान्धारय शोभने ॥२६॥
26. tataste bhavitā devi bhārasya yudhi nāśanam ,
gaccha śīghraṁ svakaṁ sthānaṁ lokāndhāraya śobhane.
26. tataḥ te bhavitā devi bhārasya yudhi nāśanam gaccha
śīghram svakam sthānam lokān dhāraya śobhane
26. tataḥ devi te yudhi bhārasya nāśanam bhavitā
śīghram svakam sthānam gaccha lokān dhāraya śobhane
26. Then, O goddess, there will be the destruction of your burden in battle. Go quickly to your own place, O beautiful one, and sustain the worlds.
स एष ते सुतो राजँल्लोकसंहारकारणात् ।
कलेरंशः समुत्पन्नो गान्धार्या जठरे नृप ॥२७॥
27. sa eṣa te suto rājaँllokasaṁhārakāraṇāt ,
kaleraṁśaḥ samutpanno gāndhāryā jaṭhare nṛpa.
27. saḥ eṣaḥ te sutaḥ rājan loka-saṃhāra-kāraṇāt
kaleḥ amśaḥ samutpannaḥ gāndhāryāḥ jaṭhare nṛpa
27. rājan nṛpa saḥ eṣaḥ te sutaḥ loka-saṃhāra-kāraṇāt
kaleḥ amśaḥ gāndhāryāḥ jaṭhare samutpannaḥ
27. O king, this son of yours, born from Gandhari's womb, is a portion of Kali, arisen for the destruction of the world.
अमर्षी चपलश्चापि क्रोधनो दुष्प्रसाधनः ।
दैवयोगात्समुत्पन्ना भ्रातरश्चास्य तादृशाः ॥२८॥
28. amarṣī capalaścāpi krodhano duṣprasādhanaḥ ,
daivayogātsamutpannā bhrātaraścāsya tādṛśāḥ.
28. amarṣī capalaḥ ca api krodhanaḥ duṣprasādhanaḥ
daivayogāt samutpannāḥ bhrātaraḥ ca asya tādṛśāḥ
28. amarṣī capalaḥ ca api krodhanaḥ duṣprasādhanaḥ
asya bhrātaraḥ ca daivayogāt tādṛśāḥ samutpannāḥ
28. He was intolerant, impulsive, and also prone to anger and difficult to pacify. By the force of destiny, his brothers were also of a similar nature.
शकुनिर्मातुलश्चैव कर्णश्च परमः सखा ।
समुत्पन्ना विनाशार्थं पृथिव्यां सहिता नृपाः ।
एतमर्थं महाबाहो नारदो वेद तत्त्वतः ॥२९॥
29. śakunirmātulaścaiva karṇaśca paramaḥ sakhā ,
samutpannā vināśārthaṁ pṛthivyāṁ sahitā nṛpāḥ ,
etamarthaṁ mahābāho nārado veda tattvataḥ.
29. śakuniḥ mātulaḥ ca eva karṇaḥ ca
paramaḥ sakhā samutpannāḥ vināśārtham
pṛthivyām sahitāḥ nṛpāḥ etam

29. śakuniḥ mātulaḥ ca eva karṇaḥ ca

vināśārtham samutpannāḥ mahābāho
nāradaḥ etam artham tattvataḥ veda
29. Indeed, Shakuni, his maternal uncle, and Karna, his foremost friend, along with other kings, have appeared on earth specifically for destruction. O mighty-armed one, Narada knows this truth (tattva) in its essence.
आत्मापराधात्पुत्रास्ते विनष्टाः पृथिवीपते ।
मा ताञ्शोचस्व राजेन्द्र न हि शोकेऽस्ति कारणम् ॥३०॥
30. ātmāparādhātputrāste vinaṣṭāḥ pṛthivīpate ,
mā tāñśocasva rājendra na hi śoke'sti kāraṇam.
30. ātmāparādhāt putrāḥ te vinaṣṭāḥ pṛthivīpate mā
tān śocasva rājendra na hi śoke asti kāraṇam
30. pṛthivīpate te putrāḥ ātmāparādhāt vinaṣṭāḥ
rājendra mā tān śocasva hi śoke kāraṇam na asti
30. O lord of the earth, your sons perished due to their own self (ātman) transgressions. O king of kings, do not grieve for them, for there is indeed no cause for sorrow.
न हि ते पाण्डवाः स्वल्पमपराध्यन्ति भारत ।
पुत्रास्तव दुरात्मानो यैरियं घातिता मही ॥३१॥
31. na hi te pāṇḍavāḥ svalpamaparādhyanti bhārata ,
putrāstava durātmāno yairiyaṁ ghātitā mahī.
31. na hi te pāṇḍavāḥ svalpam aparādhyanti bhārata
putrāḥ tava durātmānaḥ yaiḥ iyam ghātitā mahī
31. bhārata hi te pāṇḍavāḥ svalpam na aparādhyanti
tava durātmānaḥ putrāḥ yaiḥ iyam mahī ghātitā
31. O descendant of Bharata, those Pāṇḍavas did not transgress even slightly. It was your wicked-minded sons by whom this entire earth was caused to be devastated.
नारदेन च भद्रं ते पूर्वमेव न संशयः ।
युधिष्ठिरस्य समितौ राजसूये निवेदितम् ॥३२॥
32. nāradena ca bhadraṁ te pūrvameva na saṁśayaḥ ,
yudhiṣṭhirasya samitau rājasūye niveditam.
32. nāradena ca bhadram te pūrvam eva na saṃśayaḥ
yudhiṣṭhirasya samitau rājasūye niveditam
32. ca te bhadram pūrvam eva na saṃśayaḥ
yudhiṣṭhirasya samitau rājasūye nāradena niveditam
32. And indeed, it was already reported by Narada, to your good fortune, without a doubt, in Yudhishthira's assembly during the Rājasūya (yajña).
पाण्डवाः कौरवाश्चैव समासाद्य परस्परम् ।
न भविष्यन्ति कौन्तेय यत्ते कृत्यं तदाचर ॥३३॥
33. pāṇḍavāḥ kauravāścaiva samāsādya parasparam ,
na bhaviṣyanti kaunteya yatte kṛtyaṁ tadācara.
33. pāṇḍavāḥ kauravāḥ ca eva samāsādya parasparam
na bhaviṣyanti kaunteya yat te kṛtyam tat ācara
33. kaunteya pāṇḍavāḥ kauravāḥ ca eva parasparam
samāsādya na bhaviṣyanti yat te kṛtyam tat ācara
33. O Kaunteya (son of Kuntī), the Pāṇḍavas and the Kauravas, having encountered each other, will not survive. Therefore, whatever action is your duty, perform that.
नारदस्य वचः श्रुत्वा तदाशोचन्त पाण्डवाः ।
एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं देवगुह्यं सनातनम् ॥३४॥
34. nāradasya vacaḥ śrutvā tadāśocanta pāṇḍavāḥ ,
etatte sarvamākhyātaṁ devaguhyaṁ sanātanam.
34. nāradasya vacaḥ śrutvā tadā aśocanta pāṇḍavāḥ
etat te sarvam ākhyātam devaguhyam sanātanam
34. nāradasya vacaḥ śrutvā tadā pāṇḍavāḥ aśocanta

34. Having heard the words of Narada, the Pāṇḍavas then lamented. All of this, the eternal (sanātana) divine secret, has now been fully revealed to you.
कथं ते शोकनाशः स्यात्प्राणेषु च दया प्रभो ।
स्नेहश्च पाण्डुपुत्रेषु ज्ञात्वा दैवकृतं विधिम् ॥३५॥
35. kathaṁ te śokanāśaḥ syātprāṇeṣu ca dayā prabho ,
snehaśca pāṇḍuputreṣu jñātvā daivakṛtaṁ vidhim.
35. katham te śokanāśaḥ syāt prāṇeṣu ca dayā prabho
snehaḥ ca pāṇḍuputreṣu jñātvā daivakṛtam vidhim
35. prabho katham te śokanāśaḥ syāt ca prāṇeṣu dayā
ca pāṇḍuputreṣu snehaḥ daivakṛtam vidhim jñātvā
35. O Lord, how can your grief (śoka) be destroyed, and how can there be compassion towards all living beings and affection towards the Pāṇḍavas, when you have understood this divinely ordained course of events (vidhi)?
एष चार्थो महाबाहो पूर्वमेव मया श्रुतः ।
कथितो धर्मराजस्य राजसूये क्रतूत्तमे ॥३६॥
36. eṣa cārtho mahābāho pūrvameva mayā śrutaḥ ,
kathito dharmarājasya rājasūye kratūttame.
36. eṣaḥ ca arthaḥ mahābāho pūrvam eva mayā śrutaḥ
kathitaḥ dharmarājasya rājasūye kratūttame
36. mahābāho eṣaḥ ca arthaḥ pūrvam eva mayā śrutaḥ
dharmarājasya kratūttame rājasūye kathitaḥ
36. This matter, O mighty-armed one, was indeed heard by me previously. It was narrated by the king of righteousness (dharma) during the supreme Rājasūya sacrifice.
यतितं धर्मपुत्रेण मया गुह्ये निवेदिते ।
अविग्रहे कौरवाणां दैवं तु बलवत्तरम् ॥३७॥
37. yatitaṁ dharmaputreṇa mayā guhye nivedite ,
avigrahe kauravāṇāṁ daivaṁ tu balavattaram.
37. yatitam dharmaputreṇa mayā guhye nivedite
avigrahe kauravāṇām daivam tu balavattaram
37. mayā dharmaputreṇa yatitam guhye nivedite
tu kauravāṇām avigrahe daivam balavattaram
37. Though I, along with the son of righteousness (dharma), made an effort when the secret counsel was conveyed, divine will (daiva) is nevertheless more powerful concerning the prevention of conflict among the Kauravas.
अनतिक्रमणीयो हि विधी राजन्कथंचन ।
कृतान्तस्य हि भूतेन स्थावरेण त्रसेन च ॥३८॥
38. anatikramaṇīyo hi vidhī rājankathaṁcana ,
kṛtāntasya hi bhūtena sthāvareṇa trasena ca.
38. anatikramaṇīyaḥ hi vidhiḥ rājan kathaṃcana
kṛtāntasya hi bhūtena sthāvareṇa trasena ca
38. rājan hi kṛtāntasya vidhiḥ kathaṃcana
anatikramaṇīyaḥ hi bhūtena sthāvareṇa trasena ca
38. Indeed, O king, the decree (vidhi) of destiny (kṛtānta) is in no way to be transgressed, whether by a stationary or a moving creature.
भवान्धर्मपरो यत्र बुद्धिश्रेष्ठश्च भारत ।
मुह्यते प्राणिनां ज्ञात्वा गतिं चागतिमेव च ॥३९॥
39. bhavāndharmaparo yatra buddhiśreṣṭhaśca bhārata ,
muhyate prāṇināṁ jñātvā gatiṁ cāgatimeva ca.
39. bhavān dharmaparaḥ yatra buddhiśreṣṭhaḥ ca bhārata
muhyate prāṇinām jñātvā gatim ca agatīm eva ca
39. bhārata yatra bhavān dharmaparaḥ ca buddhiśreṣṭhaḥ
prāṇinām gatim agatīm ca eva jñātvā muhyate
39. Even you, O Bhārata, who are devoted to righteousness (dharma) and are supreme in intellect, become bewildered, having understood the destiny and the ultimate state of all beings.
त्वां तु शोकेन संतप्तं मुह्यमानं मुहुर्मुहुः ।
ज्ञात्वा युधिष्ठिरो राजा प्राणानपि परित्यजेत् ॥४०॥
40. tvāṁ tu śokena saṁtaptaṁ muhyamānaṁ muhurmuhuḥ ,
jñātvā yudhiṣṭhiro rājā prāṇānapi parityajet.
40. त्वां तु शोकेन संतप्तम् मुह्यमानम् मुहुर्मुहुः
ज्ञात्वा युधिष्ठिरः राजा प्राणान् अपि परित्यजेत्
40. युधिष्ठिरः राजा तु त्वां शोकेन संतप्तम् मुहुर्मुहुः
मुह्यमानम् ज्ञात्वा प्राणान् अपि परित्यजेत्
40. Indeed, if King Yudhishthira were to realize that you are tormented by sorrow and repeatedly bewildered, he would even give up his own life.
कृपालुर्नित्यशो वीरस्तिर्यग्योनिगतेष्वपि ।
स कथं त्वयि राजेन्द्र कृपां वै न करिष्यति ॥४१॥
41. kṛpālurnityaśo vīrastiryagyonigateṣvapi ,
sa kathaṁ tvayi rājendra kṛpāṁ vai na kariṣyati.
41. कृपालुः नित्यशः वीरः तिर्यग्योनिगतेषु अपि सः
कथम् त्वयि राजेन्द्र कृपाम् वै न करिष्यति
41. राजेन्द्र सः नित्यशः कृपालुः वीरः तिर्यग्योनिगतेषु
अपि कथम् त्वयि कृपाम् वै न करिष्यति
41. He, who is always a compassionate hero, even towards those born in lower species, how could he possibly not show compassion towards you, O King of kings?
मम चैव नियोगेन विधेश्चाप्यनिवर्तनात् ।
पाण्डवानां च कारुण्यात्प्राणान्धारय भारत ॥४२॥
42. mama caiva niyogena vidheścāpyanivartanāt ,
pāṇḍavānāṁ ca kāruṇyātprāṇāndhāraya bhārata.
42. मम च एव नियोगेन विधेः च अपि अनिवर्तनात्
पाण्डवानाम् च कारुण्यात् प्राणान् धारय भारत
42. भारत मम च एव नियोगेन विधेः च अपि अनिवर्तनात्
पाण्डवानाम् च कारुण्यात् प्राणान् धारय
42. O Bharata, preserve your life because of my command, the irreversibility of destiny, and the compassion of the Pāṇḍavas.
एवं ते वर्तमानस्य लोके कीर्तिर्भविष्यति ।
धर्मश्च सुमहांस्तात तप्तं स्याच्च तपश्चिरात् ॥४३॥
43. evaṁ te vartamānasya loke kīrtirbhaviṣyati ,
dharmaśca sumahāṁstāta taptaṁ syācca tapaścirāt.
43. एवम् ते वर्तमानस्य लोके कीर्तिः भविष्यति
धर्मः च सुमहान् तात तप्तम् स्यात् च तपः चिरात्
43. तात एवम् वर्तमानस्य ते लोके कीर्तिः भविष्यति
च सुमहान् धर्मः च चिरात् तपः तप्तम् स्यात्
43. Thus, for you, living in this manner, there will be fame in the world, O dear one. Your adherence to natural law (dharma) will be very great, and it will be as if austerity (tapas) has been performed by you for a long time.
पुत्रशोकसमुत्पन्नं हुताशं ज्वलितं यथा ।
प्रज्ञाम्भसा महाराज निर्वापय सदा सदा ॥४४॥
44. putraśokasamutpannaṁ hutāśaṁ jvalitaṁ yathā ,
prajñāmbhasā mahārāja nirvāpaya sadā sadā.
44. putraśokasamutpannam hutāśam jvalitam yathā
prajñāmbhasā mahārāja nirvāpaya sadā sadā
44. mahārāja,
sadā sadā prajñāmbhasā yathā putraśokasamutpannam jvalitam hutāśam nirvāpaya.
44. O great king, always extinguish this burning fire, which has arisen from the grief for your sons, with the water of wisdom.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु वचनं व्यासस्यामिततेजसः ।
मुहूर्तं समनुध्याय धृतराष्ट्रोऽभ्यभाषत ॥४५॥
45. etacchrutvā tu vacanaṁ vyāsasyāmitatejasaḥ ,
muhūrtaṁ samanudhyāya dhṛtarāṣṭro'bhyabhāṣata.
45. etat śrutvā tu vacanam vyāsasya amitatejasaḥ
muhūrtam samanudhyāya dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ abhyabhāṣata
45. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ tu amitatejasaḥ vyāsasya etat vacanam śrutvā,
muhūrtam samanudhyāya,
abhyabhāṣata.
45. Having heard these words from Vyāsa, who possessed immeasurable splendor, Dhṛtarāṣṭra reflected deeply for a moment and then spoke in reply.
महता शोकजालेन प्रणुन्नोऽस्मि द्विजोत्तम ।
नात्मानमवबुध्यामि मुह्यमानो मुहुर्मुहुः ॥४६॥
46. mahatā śokajālena praṇunno'smi dvijottama ,
nātmānamavabudhyāmi muhyamāno muhurmuhuḥ.
46. mahatā śokajālena praṇunnaḥ asmi dvijottama
na ātmānam avabudhyāmi muhyamānaḥ muhurmuhuḥ
46. dvijottama,
mahatā śokajālena praṇunnaḥ asmi.
muhurmuhuḥ muhyamānaḥ ātmānam na avabudhyāmi.
46. O best of brahmins (dvijottama), I am overwhelmed by a vast net of grief, and being repeatedly bewildered, I cannot comprehend myself (ātman).
इदं तु वचनं श्रुत्वा तव दैवनियोगजम् ।
धारयिष्याम्यहं प्राणान्यतिष्ये च नशोचितुम् ॥४७॥
47. idaṁ tu vacanaṁ śrutvā tava daivaniyogajam ,
dhārayiṣyāmyahaṁ prāṇānyatiṣye ca naśocitum.
47. idam tu vacanam śrutvā tava daivaniyogajam
dhārayiṣyāmi aham prāṇān yatiṣye ca na śocitum
47. aham tu tava daivaniyogajam idam vacanam śrutvā prāṇān dhārayiṣyāmi,
ca na śocitum yatiṣye.
47. However, having heard these words of yours, which arise from divine injunction, I shall sustain my life (prāṇa) and strive not to grieve.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु वचनं व्यासः सत्यवतीसुतः ।
धृतराष्ट्रस्य राजेन्द्र तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥४८॥
48. etacchrutvā tu vacanaṁ vyāsaḥ satyavatīsutaḥ ,
dhṛtarāṣṭrasya rājendra tatraivāntaradhīyata.
48. etat śrutvā tu vacanam vyāsaḥ satyavatīsutaḥ
dhṛtarāṣṭrasya rājendra tatra eva antaradhīyata
48. राजेन्द्र धृतराष्ट्रस्य एतत् वचनम् श्रुत्वा
तु सत्यवतीसुतः व्यासः तत्र एव अन्तरधीयत
48. O king (Janamejaya), having heard this statement of Dhritarashtra, Vyasa, the son of Satyavati, disappeared right then and there.
