सूर्य उवाच ।
माहितं कर्ण कार्षीस्त्वमात्मनः सुहृदां तथा ।
पुत्राणामथ भार्याणामथो मातुरथो पितुः ॥१॥
1. sūrya uvāca ,
māhitaṁ karṇa kārṣīstvamātmanaḥ suhṛdāṁ tathā ,
putrāṇāmatha bhāryāṇāmatho māturatho pituḥ.
1. sūryaḥ uvāca mā ahitam karṇa kārṣīḥ tvam ātmanaḥ suhṛdām
tathā putrāṇām atha bhāryāṇām atha u mātuḥ atha u pituḥ
1. The Sun said: 'O Karṇa, you should not bring harm upon yourself (ātman), nor upon your friends, nor upon your sons, your wives, your mother, or your father.'
शरीरस्याविरोधेन प्राणिनां प्राणभृद्वर ।
इष्यते यशसः प्राप्तिः कीर्तिश्च त्रिदिवे स्थिरा ॥२॥
2. śarīrasyāvirodhena prāṇināṁ prāṇabhṛdvara ,
iṣyate yaśasaḥ prāptiḥ kīrtiśca tridive sthirā.
2. śarīrasya avirodhena prāṇinām prāṇabhṛtvara
iṣyate yaśasaḥ prāptiḥ kīrtiḥ ca tridive sthirā
2. O best of embodied beings, the attainment of fame and enduring glory in heaven is desired, but only when it is achieved without detriment to one's own body and without harm to other living beings.
यस्त्वं प्राणविरोधेन कीर्तिमिच्छसि शाश्वतीम् ।
सा ते प्राणान्समादाय गमिष्यति न संशयः ॥३॥
3. yastvaṁ prāṇavirodhena kīrtimicchasi śāśvatīm ,
sā te prāṇānsamādāya gamiṣyati na saṁśayaḥ.
3. yaḥ tvam prāṇavirodhena kīrtim icchasi śāśvatīm
sā te prāṇān samādāya gamiṣyati na saṃśayaḥ
3. You who desire lasting fame at the cost of your life, that very fame will take your life away and depart; there is no doubt about it.
जीवतां कुरुते कार्यं पिता माता सुतास्तथा ।
ये चान्ये बान्धवाः केचिल्लोकेऽस्मिन्पुरुषर्षभ ।
राजानश्च नरव्याघ्र पौरुषेण निबोध तत् ॥४॥
4. jīvatāṁ kurute kāryaṁ pitā mātā sutāstathā ,
ye cānye bāndhavāḥ kecilloke'sminpuruṣarṣabha ,
rājānaśca naravyāghra pauruṣeṇa nibodha tat.
4. jīvatām kurute kāryam pitā mātā
sutāḥ tathā ye ca anye bāndhavāḥ kecit
loke asmin puruṣarṣabha rājānaḥ
ca naravyāghra pauruṣeṇa nibodha tat
4. Father, mother, children, and other relatives, as well as kings, all perform duties for the living in this world, O best among men, O tiger among men. Understand that by your own human effort (pauruṣa).
कीर्तिश्च जीवतः साध्वी पुरुषस्य महाद्युते ।
मृतस्य कीर्त्या किं कार्यं भस्मीभूतस्य देहिनः ।
मृतः कीर्तिं न जानाति जीवन्कीर्तिं समश्नुते ॥५॥
5. kīrtiśca jīvataḥ sādhvī puruṣasya mahādyute ,
mṛtasya kīrtyā kiṁ kāryaṁ bhasmībhūtasya dehinaḥ ,
mṛtaḥ kīrtiṁ na jānāti jīvankīrtiṁ samaśnute.
5. kīrtiḥ ca jīvataḥ sādhvī puruṣasya
mahādyute mṛtasya kīrtyā kim kāryam
bhasmībhūtasya dehinaḥ mṛtaḥ
kīrtim na jānāti jīvan kīrtim samaśnute
5. Fame is truly beneficial for a living person, O greatly radiant one. What use is fame to one who is dead, to the embodied being (dehin) whose body has turned to ashes? A dead person does not know fame, but a living person enjoys it.
मृतस्य कीर्तिर्मर्त्यस्य यथा माला गतायुषः ।
अहं तु त्वां ब्रवीम्येतद्भक्तोऽसीति हितेप्सया ॥६॥
6. mṛtasya kīrtirmartyasya yathā mālā gatāyuṣaḥ ,
ahaṁ tu tvāṁ bravīmyetadbhakto'sīti hitepsayā.
6. mṛtasya kīrtiḥ martyasya yathā mālā gatāyuṣaḥ aham
tu tvām bravīmi etat bhaktaḥ asi iti hitepsayā
6. Fame for a dead mortal is like a garland offered to one whose life has departed. But I tell you this, knowing that you are my devotee (bhakta), and out of a desire for your welfare.
भक्तिमन्तो हि मे रक्ष्या इत्येतेनापि हेतुना ।
भक्तोऽयं परया भक्त्या मामित्येव महाभुज ।
ममापि भक्तिरुत्पन्ना स त्वं कुरु वचो मम ॥७॥
7. bhaktimanto hi me rakṣyā ityetenāpi hetunā ,
bhakto'yaṁ parayā bhaktyā māmityeva mahābhuja ,
mamāpi bhaktirutpannā sa tvaṁ kuru vaco mama.
7. bhaktimantaḥ hi me rakṣyāḥ iti etena
api hetunā bhaktaḥ ayam parayā bhaktyā
mām iti eva mahābhuja mama api
bhaktiḥ utpannā saḥ tvam kuru vacaḥ mama
7. Indeed, those endowed with devotion (bhakti) are to be protected by me. For this very reason, O mighty-armed one, since this devotee approaches me with supreme devotion (bhakti), devotion (bhakti) has also arisen in me. Therefore, you must carry out my command.
अस्ति चात्र परं किंचिदध्यात्मं देवनिर्मितम् ।
अतश्च त्वां ब्रवीम्येतत्क्रियतामविशङ्कया ॥८॥
8. asti cātra paraṁ kiṁcidadhyātmaṁ devanirmitam ,
ataśca tvāṁ bravīmyetatkriyatāmaviśaṅkayā.
8. asti ca atra param kiñcit adhyātmam devanirmitam
ataḥ ca tvām bravīmi etat kriyatām aviśaṅkayā
8. And there is something else supreme and spiritually significant (adhyātman) here, created by the gods. Therefore, I tell you this: let it be done without hesitation.
देवगुह्यं त्वया ज्ञातुं न शक्यं पुरुषर्षभ ।
तस्मान्नाख्यामि ते गुह्यं काले वेत्स्यति तद्भवान् ॥९॥
9. devaguhyaṁ tvayā jñātuṁ na śakyaṁ puruṣarṣabha ,
tasmānnākhyāmi te guhyaṁ kāle vetsyati tadbhavān.
9. devaguhyam tvayā jñātum na śakyam puruṣarṣabha
tasmāt na ākhyāmi te guhyam kāle vetsyati tat bhavān
9. O best among men (puruṣarṣabha), this divine secret is not possible for you to know. Therefore, I will not disclose that secret to you now; you will know it in due time.
पुनरुक्तं च वक्ष्यामि त्वं राधेय निबोध तत् ।
मास्मै ते कुण्डले दद्या भिक्षवे वज्रपाणये ॥१०॥
10. punaruktaṁ ca vakṣyāmi tvaṁ rādheya nibodha tat ,
māsmai te kuṇḍale dadyā bhikṣave vajrapāṇaye.
10. punaruktam ca vakṣyāmi tvam rādheya nibodha tat
mā asmai te kuṇḍale dadyāḥ bhikṣave vajrapāṇaye
10. And I will repeat this (to you): O son of Rādhā (Rādheya), understand this! Do not give those two earrings to this beggar, Vajrapāṇi.
शोभसे कुण्डलाभ्यां हि रुचिराभ्यां महाद्युते ।
विशाखयोर्मध्यगतः शशीव विमलो दिवि ॥११॥
11. śobhase kuṇḍalābhyāṁ hi rucirābhyāṁ mahādyute ,
viśākhayormadhyagataḥ śaśīva vimalo divi.
11. śobhase kuṇḍalābhyām hi rucirābhyām mahādyute
viśākhayoḥ madhyagataḥ śaśī iva vimalaḥ divi
11. O greatly effulgent one, you indeed shine beautifully with these charming earrings, like the spotless moon in the sky positioned between the two Viśākha stars.
कीर्तिश्च जीवतः साध्वी पुरुषस्येति विद्धि तत् ।
प्रत्याख्येयस्त्वया तात कुण्डलार्थे पुरंदरः ॥१२॥
12. kīrtiśca jīvataḥ sādhvī puruṣasyeti viddhi tat ,
pratyākhyeyastvayā tāta kuṇḍalārthe puraṁdaraḥ.
12. kīrtiḥ ca jīvataḥ sādhvī puruṣasya iti viddhi tat
| pratyākhyeyaḥ tvayā tāta kuṇḍalārthe purandaraḥ
12. And know this: for a living man, a good reputation (kīrti) is truly virtuous. Therefore, O dear one, you should reject Purandara for the sake of the earrings.
शक्या बहुविधैर्वाक्यैः कुण्डलेप्सा त्वयानघ ।
विहन्तुं देवराजस्य हेतुयुक्तैः पुनः पुनः ॥१३॥
13. śakyā bahuvidhairvākyaiḥ kuṇḍalepsā tvayānagha ,
vihantuṁ devarājasya hetuyuktaiḥ punaḥ punaḥ.
13. śakyā bahuvidhaiḥ vākyaiḥ kuṇḍalepsā tvayā anagha
| vihantuṃ devarājasya hetuyuktaiḥ punaḥ punaḥ
13. O faultless one, you are capable of thwarting the king of gods' desire for the earrings (kuṇḍalepsā) repeatedly with many kinds of logical arguments.
उपपत्त्युपपन्नार्थैर्माधुर्यकृतभूषणैः ।
पुरंदरस्य कर्ण त्वं बुद्धिमेतामपानुद ॥१४॥
14. upapattyupapannārthairmādhuryakṛtabhūṣaṇaiḥ ,
puraṁdarasya karṇa tvaṁ buddhimetāmapānuda.
14. upapattyupapannārthaiḥ mādhuryakṛtabhūṣaṇaiḥ
purandarasya karṇa tvaṃ buddhim etām apānuda
14. O Karṇa, with arguments that are logical (upapattyupapannārthaiḥ) and adorned with sweetness (mādhuryakṛtabhūṣaṇaiḥ), you should dispel this resolve (buddhi) of Purandara.
त्वं हि नित्यं नरव्याघ्र स्पर्धसे सव्यसाचिना ।
सव्यसाची त्वया चैव युधि शूरः समेष्यति ॥१५॥
15. tvaṁ hi nityaṁ naravyāghra spardhase savyasācinā ,
savyasācī tvayā caiva yudhi śūraḥ sameṣyati.
15. tvam hi nityam naravyāghra spardhase savyasācinā
savyasācī tvayā ca eva yudhi śūraḥ sameṣyati
15. Indeed, O tiger among men, you constantly compete with Arjuna (savyasācin). And Arjuna (savyasācin), a hero in battle, will certainly confront you.
न तु त्वामर्जुनः शक्तः कुण्डलाभ्यां समन्वितम् ।
विजेतुं युधि यद्यस्य स्वयमिन्द्रः शरो भवेत् ॥१६॥
16. na tu tvāmarjunaḥ śaktaḥ kuṇḍalābhyāṁ samanvitam ,
vijetuṁ yudhi yadyasya svayamindraḥ śaro bhavet.
16. na tu tvām arjunaḥ śaktaḥ kuṇḍalābhyām samanvitam
vijetum yudhi yadi asya svayam indraḥ śaraḥ bhavet
16. But Arjuna is not capable of conquering you in battle while you possess your earrings, even if Indra himself were to become his arrow.
तस्मान्न देये शक्राय त्वयैते कुण्डले शुभे ।
संग्रामे यदि निर्जेतुं कर्ण कामयसेऽर्जुनम् ॥१७॥
17. tasmānna deye śakrāya tvayaite kuṇḍale śubhe ,
saṁgrāme yadi nirjetuṁ karṇa kāmayase'rjunam.
17. tasmāt na deye śakrāya tvayā ete kuṇḍale śubhe
saṃgrāme yadi nirjetum karṇa kāmayase arjunam
17. Therefore, these two auspicious earrings should not be given by you to Indra (śakra), O Karna, if you wish to conquer Arjuna in battle.
