वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तथा तु पृच्छन्तमतीव पार्थान्वैचित्रवीर्यं तमचिन्तयित्वा ।
उवाच कर्णो धृतराष्ट्रपुत्रं प्रहर्षयन्संसदि कौरवाणाम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tathā tu pṛcchantamatīva pārthā;nvaicitravīryaṁ tamacintayitvā ,

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Thus, without giving much thought to Dhṛtarāṣṭra (Vaicitravīrya), who was excessively questioning about the sons of Pṛthā (Pārthas), Karṇa spoke to the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (Duryodhana), delighting him in the assembly of the Kauravas.
मिथ्या प्रतिज्ञाय मया यदस्त्रं रामाद्धृतं ब्रह्मपुरं पुरस्तात् ।
विज्ञाय तेनास्मि तदैवमुक्तस्तवान्तकालेऽप्रतिभास्यतीति ॥२॥
2. mithyā pratijñāya mayā yadastraṁ; rāmāddhṛtaṁ brahmapuraṁ purastāt ,
vijñāya tenāsmi tadaivamukta;stavāntakāle'pratibhāsyatīti.

rāmāt dhṛtam brahmapuram purastāt
vijñāya tena asmi tadā eva uktaḥ
tava antakāle apratibhāsyati iti
2. Because I falsely claimed (to be a Brahmin) and had previously received the divine weapon (astra) from Rāma (Paraśurāma) in his Brahmin domain (brahmapuraṃ), he (Rāma), realizing this, then told me, "It will not manifest for you at the time of your demise."
महापराधे ह्यपि संनतेन महर्षिणाहं गुरुणा च शप्तः ।
शक्तः प्रदग्धुं ह्यपि तिग्मतेजाः ससागरामप्यवनिं महर्षिः ॥३॥
3. mahāparādhe hyapi saṁnatena; maharṣiṇāhaṁ guruṇā ca śaptaḥ ,
śaktaḥ pradagdhuṁ hyapi tigmatejāḥ; sasāgarāmapyavaniṁ maharṣiḥ.
3. mahāparādhe hi api saṃnatena
maharṣiṇā aham guruṇā ca śaptaḥ
śaktaḥ pradagdhun hi api tigmatejāḥ
sasāgarām api avanim maharṣiḥ
3. For, although I had committed a grave offense, I was cursed by my teacher (guru), the great sage (maharṣi), even when he was (partially) appeased. That great sage (maharṣi), whose brilliance was fierce, was indeed capable of burning even the entire earth (avaniṃ) with its oceans.
प्रसादितं ह्यस्य मया मनोऽभूच्छुश्रूषया स्वेन च पौरुषेण ।
ततस्तदस्त्रं मम सावशेषं तस्मात्समर्थोऽस्मि ममैष भारः ॥४॥
4. prasāditaṁ hyasya mayā mano'bhū;cchuśrūṣayā svena ca pauruṣeṇa ,
tatastadastraṁ mama sāvaśeṣaṁ; tasmātsamartho'smi mamaiṣa bhāraḥ.
4. prasāditam hi asya mayā manaḥ abhūt
śuśrūṣayā svena ca pauruṣeṇa
tataḥ tat astram mama sāvaśeṣam
tasmāt samarthaḥ asmi mama eṣa bhāraḥ
4. For his (Paraśurāma's) mind was indeed appeased by me through devoted service and my own valor. Therefore, that weapon (astra) remains partially effective for me. Consequently, I am capable; this (task) is my responsibility.
निमेषमात्रं तमृषिप्रसादमवाप्य पाञ्चालकरूषमत्स्यान् ।
निहत्य पार्थांश्च सपुत्रपौत्राँल्लोकानहं शस्त्रजितान्प्रपत्स्ये ॥५॥
5. nimeṣamātraṁ tamṛṣiprasāda;mavāpya pāñcālakarūṣamatsyān ,
nihatya pārthāṁśca saputrapautrāँ;llokānahaṁ śastrajitānprapatsye.
5. nimeṣamātram tam ṛṣiprasādam
avāpya pāñcālakāruṣamatsyān
nihatya pārthān ca saputrapautrān
lokān aham śastrajitān prapatsye
5. Having received that sage's grace (prasāda) for just a moment, I will kill the Pañcālas, the Kāruṣas, the Matsyas, and the Pārthas along with their sons and grandsons. Then I shall attain the worlds conquered by my weapons.
पितामहस्तिष्ठतु ते समीपे द्रोणश्च सर्वे च नरेन्द्रमुख्याः ।
यथाप्रधानेन बलेन यात्वा पार्थान्हनिष्यामि ममैष भारः ॥६॥
6. pitāmahastiṣṭhatu te samīpe; droṇaśca sarve ca narendramukhyāḥ ,
yathāpradhānena balena yātvā; pārthānhaniṣyāmi mamaiṣa bhāraḥ.
6. pitāmahaḥ tiṣṭhatu te samīpe
droṇaḥ ca sarve ca narendramukhyāḥ
yathāpradhānena balena yātvā
pārthān haniṣyāmi mama eṣaḥ bhāraḥ
6. Let the Grandfather (Bhīṣma) stand beside you, and Droṇa, and all the chief kings. I will go forth with my full strength and kill the Pārthas. This is my responsibility.
एवं ब्रुवाणं तमुवाच भीष्मः किं कत्थसे कालपरीतबुद्धे ।
न कर्ण जानासि यथा प्रधाने हते हताः स्युर्धृतराष्ट्रपुत्राः ॥७॥
7. evaṁ bruvāṇaṁ tamuvāca bhīṣmaḥ; kiṁ katthase kālaparītabuddhe ,
na karṇa jānāsi yathā pradhāne; hate hatāḥ syurdhṛtarāṣṭraputrāḥ.
7. evam bruvāṇam tam uvāca bhīṣmaḥ
kim katthase kālaparītabuddhe
na karṇa jānāsi yathā pradhāne
hate hatāḥ syuḥ dhṛtarāṣṭraputrāḥ
7. To him, speaking thus, Bhīṣma said: 'Why do you boast, O you whose intellect is clouded by impending death (kāla)? O Karṇa, do you not know that if the principal leaders are slain, the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra would also be vanquished?'
यत्खाण्डवं दाहयता कृतं हि कृष्णद्वितीयेन धनंजयेन ।
श्रुत्वैव तत्कर्म नियन्तुमात्मा शक्यस्त्वया वै सह बान्धवेन ॥८॥
8. yatkhāṇḍavaṁ dāhayatā kṛtaṁ hi; kṛṣṇadvitīyena dhanaṁjayena ,
śrutvaiva tatkarma niyantumātmā; śakyastvayā vai saha bāndhavena.
8. yat khāṇḍavam dāhayatā kṛtam hi
kṛṣṇadvitīyena dhanañjayena
śrutvā eva tat karma niyantum ātmā
śakyaḥ tvayā vai saha bāndhavena
8. After hearing of that deed, indeed performed by Arjuna, who had Kṛṣṇa as his companion, when he caused the Khāṇḍava forest to be burnt, your own mind (ātman), along with your kinsmen, should be capable of self-restraint.
यां चापि शक्तिं त्रिदशाधिपस्ते ददौ महात्मा भगवान्महेन्द्रः ।
भस्मीकृतां तां पतितां विशीर्णां चक्राहतां द्रक्ष्यसि केशवेन ॥९॥
9. yāṁ cāpi śaktiṁ tridaśādhipaste; dadau mahātmā bhagavānmahendraḥ ,
bhasmīkṛtāṁ tāṁ patitāṁ viśīrṇāṁ; cakrāhatāṁ drakṣyasi keśavena.
9. yām ca api śaktim tridaśādhipaḥ te
dadau mahātmā bhagavān mahendraḥ
| bhasmīkṛtām tām patitām viśīrṇām
cakrāhatām drakṣyasi keśavena
9. And that divine energy (śakti) which the great-souled, divine Mahendra, the lord of the gods, gave to you, you will see it reduced to ashes, fallen, shattered, and struck by Keśava's discus (cakra).
यस्ते शरः सर्पमुखो विभाति सदाग्र्यमाल्यैर्महितः प्रयत्नात् ।
स पाण्डुपुत्राभिहतः शरौघैः सह त्वया यास्यति कर्ण नाशम् ॥१०॥
10. yaste śaraḥ sarpamukho vibhāti; sadāgryamālyairmahitaḥ prayatnāt ,
sa pāṇḍuputrābhihataḥ śaraughaiḥ; saha tvayā yāsyati karṇa nāśam.
10. yaḥ te śaraḥ sarpamukhaḥ vibhāti
sadā agryamālyaiḥ mahitaḥ prayatnāt
| saḥ pāṇḍuputrābhihataḥ śaraughaiḥ
saha tvayā yāsyati karṇa nāśam
10. O Karṇa, that serpent-mouthed arrow of yours, which always shines and is carefully honored with excellent garlands, that very arrow, struck by the torrents of arrows from the sons of Pāṇḍu, will go to destruction along with you.
बाणस्य भौमस्य च कर्ण हन्ता किरीटिनं रक्षति वासुदेवः ।
यस्त्वादृशानां च गरीयसां च हन्ता रिपूणां तुमुले प्रगाढे ॥११॥
11. bāṇasya bhaumasya ca karṇa hantā; kirīṭinaṁ rakṣati vāsudevaḥ ,
yastvādṛśānāṁ ca garīyasāṁ ca; hantā ripūṇāṁ tumule pragāḍhe.
11. bāṇasya bhaumasya ca karṇa hantā
kirīṭinam rakṣati vāsudevaḥ |
yaḥ tu ādiśānām ca garīyasām ca
hantā ripūṇām tumule pragāḍhe
11. O Karṇa, Vāsudeva (Krishna), the slayer of Bāṇa and Bhūma (Naraka), protects Arjuna, the crowned one. He is indeed the slayer of enemies like you and also of the most formidable ones in intense combat.
कर्ण उवाच ।
असंशयं वृष्णिपतिर्यथोक्तस्तथा च भूयश्च ततो महात्मा ।
अहं यदुक्तः परुषं तु किंचित्पितामहस्तस्य फलं शृणोतु ॥१२॥
12. karṇa uvāca ,
asaṁśayaṁ vṛṣṇipatiryathokta;stathā ca bhūyaśca tato mahātmā ,
ahaṁ yaduktaḥ paruṣaṁ tu kiṁci;tpitāmahastasya phalaṁ śṛṇotu.
12. karṇa uvāca | asaṃśayam vṛṣṇipatiḥ
yathoktaḥ tathā ca bhūyaḥ ca tataḥ
mahātmā | aham yat uktaḥ paruṣam tu
kiñcit pitāmahaḥ tasya phalam śṛṇotu
12. Karṇa said: "Without a doubt, the lord of the Vṛṣṇis (Krishna) is as described, and furthermore, he is even more great-souled than that. As for the somewhat harsh words I have spoken, may the grandsire (Bhīṣma) hear their consequence."
न्यस्यामि शस्त्राणि न जातु संख्ये पितामहो द्रक्ष्यति मां सभायाम् ।
त्वयि प्रशान्ते तु मम प्रभावं द्रक्ष्यन्ति सर्वे भुवि भूमिपालाः ॥१३॥
13. nyasyāmi śastrāṇi na jātu saṁkhye; pitāmaho drakṣyati māṁ sabhāyām ,
tvayi praśānte tu mama prabhāvaṁ; drakṣyanti sarve bhuvi bhūmipālāḥ.
13. nyasyāmi śastrāṇi na jātu saṃkhye
pitāmahaḥ drakṣyati mām sabhāyām
tvayi praśānte tu mama prabhāvam
drakṣyanti sarve bhuvi bhūmipālāḥ
13. I will never lay down my weapons in battle; rather, my grandfather will see me in the assembly (sabhāyām). But when you are pacified, all the kings (bhūmipālāḥ) on earth will witness my power.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
इत्येवमुक्त्वा स महाधनुष्मान्हित्वा सभां स्वं भवनं जगाम ।
भीष्मस्तु दुर्योधनमेव राजन्मध्ये कुरूणां प्रहसन्नुवाच ॥१४॥
14. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
ityevamuktvā sa mahādhanuṣmā;nhitvā sabhāṁ svaṁ bhavanaṁ jagāma ,
bhīṣmastu duryodhanameva rāja;nmadhye kurūṇāṁ prahasannuvāca.
14. vaiśampāyana uvāca iti evam uktvā saḥ
mahādhanuṣmān hitvā sabhām svam bhavanam
jagāma bhīṣmaḥ tu duryodhanam eva
rājan madhye kurūṇām prahasan uvāca
14. Vaiśampāyana said: Having spoken thus, that great bowman left the assembly and went to his own dwelling. But, O king, Bhishma, laughing, then spoke to Duryodhana in the midst of the Kurus.
सत्यप्रतिज्ञः किल सूतपुत्रस्तथा स भारं विषहेत कस्मात् ।
व्यूहं प्रतिव्यूह्य शिरांसि भित्त्वा लोकक्षयं पश्यत भीमसेनात् ॥१५॥
15. satyapratijñaḥ kila sūtaputra;stathā sa bhāraṁ viṣaheta kasmāt ,
vyūhaṁ prativyūhya śirāṁsi bhittvā; lokakṣayaṁ paśyata bhīmasenāt.
15. satyapratijñaḥ kila sūtaputraḥ
tathā saḥ bhāram viṣaheta kasmāt
vyūham prativyūhya śirāṃsi bhittvā
lokakṣayam paśyata bhīmasenāt
15. Indeed, the son of a charioteer (sūtaputra) is true to his vow (satyapratijñaḥ); why, then, would he endure such a burden? (Instead,) having formed a counter-array and shattered heads, behold the destruction of the people (lokakṣaya) brought by Bhimasena.
आवन्त्यकालिङ्गजयद्रथेषु वेदिध्वजे तिष्ठति बाह्लिके च ।
अहं हनिष्यामि सदा परेषां सहस्रशश्चायुतशश्च योधान् ॥१६॥
16. āvantyakāliṅgajayadratheṣu; vedidhvaje tiṣṭhati bāhlike ca ,
ahaṁ haniṣyāmi sadā pareṣāṁ; sahasraśaścāyutaśaśca yodhān.
16. āvantyakāliṅgajayadratheṣu vedidhvaje tiṣṭhati bāhlīke ca
aham haniṣyāmi sadā pareṣām sahasraśaḥ ca ayutaśaḥ ca yodhān
16. Even as the Avantyas, Kalingas, Jayadratha, Vedidhvaja, and Bahlika stand (on the battlefield), I will always slay thousands and tens of thousands of the enemies' warriors.
यदैव रामे भगवत्यनिन्द्ये ब्रह्म ब्रुवाणः कृतवांस्तदस्त्रम् ।
तदैव धर्मश्च तपश्च नष्टं वैकर्तनस्याधमपूरुषस्य ॥१७॥
17. yadaiva rāme bhagavatyanindye; brahma bruvāṇaḥ kṛtavāṁstadastram ,
tadaiva dharmaśca tapaśca naṣṭaṁ; vaikartanasyādhamapūruṣasya.
17. yadā eva rāme bhagavati anindye
brahma bruvāṇaḥ kṛtavān tat astram
tadā eva dharmaḥ ca tapaḥ ca naṣṭam
vaikartanasya adhamapuruṣasya
17. When the blameless and revered Rāma, uttering the sacred mantra (brahman) for a weapon, discharged that weapon, at that very moment, the natural law (dharma) and austerity (tapas) of the wretched son of Vīkartana (Karṇa) were utterly destroyed.
अथोक्तवाक्ये नृपतौ तु भीष्मे निक्षिप्य शस्त्राणि गते च कर्णे ।
वैचित्रवीर्यस्य सुतोऽल्पबुद्धिर्दुर्योधनः शांतनवं बभाषे ॥१८॥
18. athoktavākye nṛpatau tu bhīṣme; nikṣipya śastrāṇi gate ca karṇe ,
vaicitravīryasya suto'lpabuddhi;rduryodhanaḥ śāṁtanavaṁ babhāṣe.
18. atha uktavākye nṛpatau tu bhīṣme
nikṣipya śastrāṇi gate ca karṇe
vaicitravīryasya sutaḥ alpabuddhiḥ
duryodhanaḥ śāntanavam babhāṣe
18. Then, after the king (Yudhiṣṭhira) had spoken, and Bhīṣma had indeed laid down his weapons, and Karṇa had also departed, Duryodhana, the son of Vichitravīrya, being of little intelligence, addressed the son of Śantanu (Bhīṣma).
