तद्देवनागासुरसिद्धसंघैर्गन्धर्वयक्षाप्सरसां च संघैः ।

1. Sanjaya said: That sky, frequented by throngs of gods, nāgas, asuras, and siddhas, and by hosts of gandharvas, yakṣas, and apsarases, as well as by Brahma-rishis, Raja-rishis, and Suparnas, shone with an astonishing appearance.
नानद्यमानं निनदैर्मनोज्ञैर्वादित्रगीतस्तुतिभिश्च नृत्तैः ।
सर्वेऽन्तरिक्षे ददृशुर्मनुष्याः खस्थांश्च तान्विस्मयनीयरूपान् ॥२॥
2. nānadyamānaṁ ninadairmanojñai;rvāditragītastutibhiśca nṛttaiḥ ,
sarve'ntarikṣe dadṛśurmanuṣyāḥ; khasthāṁśca tānvismayanīyarūpān.

2. All the humans saw in the sky those wondrously formed beings standing there, being greatly celebrated with charming sounds, as well as with instrumental music, songs, praises, and dances.
ततः प्रहृष्टाः कुरुपाण्डुयोधा वादित्रपत्रायुधसिंहनादैः ।
निनादयन्तो वसुधां दिशश्च स्वनेन सर्वे द्विषतो निजघ्नुः ॥३॥
3. tataḥ prahṛṣṭāḥ kurupāṇḍuyodhā; vāditrapatrāyudhasiṁhanādaiḥ ,
ninādayanto vasudhāṁ diśaśca; svanena sarve dviṣato nijaghnuḥ.

3. Then, all the greatly delighted warriors of the Kurus and Pandavas, making the earth and the directions resound with the clamor of their instrumental music, the clanging of their weapons, and their lion-like roars, struck down their enemies.
नानाश्वमातङ्गरथायुताकुलं वरासिशक्त्यृष्टिनिपातदुःसहम् ।
अभीरुजुष्टं हतदेहसंकुलं रणाजिरं लोहितरक्तमाबभौ ॥४॥
4. nānāśvamātaṅgarathāyutākulaṁ; varāsiśaktyṛṣṭinipātaduḥsaham ,
abhīrujuṣṭaṁ hatadehasaṁkulaṁ; raṇājiraṁ lohitaraktamābabhau.

4. The battlefield (raṇājiram) was covered in blood-red hues, crowded with tens of thousands of various horses, elephants, and chariots. It was rendered unbearable by the descent of excellent swords, spears (śakti), and javelins (ṛṣṭi), yet it was thronged by the fearless and filled with strewn dead bodies.
तथा प्रवृत्तेऽस्त्रभृतां पराभवे धनंजयश्चाधिरथिश्च सायकैः ।
दिशश्च सैन्यं च शितैरजिह्मगैः परस्परं प्रोर्णुवतुः स्म दंशितौ ॥५॥
5. tathā pravṛtte'strabhṛtāṁ parābhave; dhanaṁjayaścādhirathiśca sāyakaiḥ ,
diśaśca sainyaṁ ca śitairajihmagaiḥ; parasparaṁ prorṇuvatuḥ sma daṁśitau.

dhanañjayaḥ ca adhirathiḥ ca sāyakaiḥ

5. Thus, as the defeat of the weapon-bearers began, Dhananjaya (Arjuna) and Adhirathi (Karṇa), both fully armored, engaged each other, covering the directions and the opposing army with sharp, straight-flying arrows.
ततस्त्वदीयाश्च परे च सायकैः कृतेऽन्धकारे विविदुर्न किंचन ।
भयात्तु तावेव रथौ समाश्रयंस्तमोनुदौ खे प्रसृता इवांशवः ॥६॥
6. tatastvadīyāśca pare ca sāyakaiḥ; kṛte'ndhakāre vividurna kiṁcana ,
bhayāttu tāveva rathau samāśrayaṁ;stamonudau khe prasṛtā ivāṁśavaḥ.
6. tataḥ tvadīyāḥ ca pare ca sāyakaiḥ
kṛte andhakāre vividuḥ na kiṃcana |
bhayāt tu tau eva rathau samāśrayan
tamonudau khe prasṛtāḥ iva aṃśavaḥ

6. Then, as a dense darkness was created by the arrows, neither your warriors nor the enemy warriors could perceive anything. But out of fear, they sought refuge in those very two chariots, which were like rays of light spreading across the sky, dispelling the gloom.
ततोऽस्त्रमस्त्रेण परस्परस्य तौ विधूय वाताविव पूर्वपश्चिमौ ।
घनान्धकारे वितते तमोनुदौ यथोदितौ तद्वदतीव रेजतुः ॥७॥
7. tato'stramastreṇa parasparasya tau; vidhūya vātāviva pūrvapaścimau ,
ghanāndhakāre vitate tamonudau; yathoditau tadvadatīva rejatuḥ.
7. tataḥ astram astreṇa parasparasya
tau vidhūya vātau iva pūrvapaścimau

yathā uditau tadvat atīva rejatuḥ

7. Then, those two, countering each other's weapons with their own, dispelled the dense darkness. They shone exceedingly like the two opposing winds, East and West, that have arisen, and just like dispellers of darkness.
न चाभिमन्तव्यमिति प्रचोदिताः परे त्वदीयाश्च तदावतस्थिरे ।
महारथौ तौ परिवार्य सर्वतः सुरासुरा वासवशम्बराविव ॥८॥
8. na cābhimantavyamiti pracoditāḥ; pare tvadīyāśca tadāvatasthire ,
mahārathau tau parivārya sarvataḥ; surāsurā vāsavaśambarāviva.
8. na ca abhimantavyam iti pracoditāḥ
pare tvadīyāḥ ca tadā avatastire
| mahārathau tau parivārya sarvataḥ
surāsurāḥ vāsavaśambarau iva
8. na ca iti abhimantavyam pracoditāḥ,
tadā pare ca tvadīyāḥ ca avatastire tau mahārathau sarvataḥ parivārya surāsurāḥ vāsavaśambarau iva (āsan)
8. And then, as if instructed not to attack, both your warriors and the enemy warriors stood still. They had surrounded those two great charioteers from all sides, just as gods and demons might surround Indra and Śambara.
मृदङ्गभेरीपणवानकस्वनैर्निनादिते भारत शङ्खनिस्वनैः ।
ससिंहनादौ बभतुर्नरोत्तमौ शशाङ्कसूर्याविव मेघसंप्लवे ॥९॥
9. mṛdaṅgabherīpaṇavānakasvanai;rninādite bhārata śaṅkhanisvanaiḥ ,
sasiṁhanādau babhaturnarottamau; śaśāṅkasūryāviva meghasaṁplave.

9. O Bhārata, as the battlefield resounded with the sounds of mṛdaṅga, bherī, paṇava, and anaka drums, and the clamor of conches, those two supreme heroes, uttering their lion-roars, shone brilliantly like the moon and the sun amidst a cloudburst.
महाधनुर्मण्डलमध्यगावुभौ सुवर्चसौ बाणसहस्ररश्मिनौ ।
दिधक्षमाणौ सचराचरं जगद्युगास्तसूर्याविव दुःसहौ रणे ॥१०॥
10. mahādhanurmaṇḍalamadhyagāvubhau; suvarcasau bāṇasahasraraśminau ,
didhakṣamāṇau sacarācaraṁ jaga;dyugāstasūryāviva duḥsahau raṇe.

10. Both of them, standing in the center of their great bows' circles, were resplendent, emitting thousands of arrows like rays of light. Eager to consume the entire world, both the moving and the non-moving, they were unbearable in battle, like two suns at the end of an epoch.
उभावजेयावहितान्तकावुभौ जिघांसतुस्तौ कृतिनौ परस्परम् ।
महाहवे वीरवरौ समीयतुर्यथेन्द्रजम्भाविव कर्णपाण्डवौ ॥११॥
11. ubhāvajeyāvahitāntakāvubhau; jighāṁsatustau kṛtinau parasparam ,
mahāhave vīravarau samīyatu;ryathendrajambhāviva karṇapāṇḍavau.

jighāṃsatuḥ tau kṛtinau parasparam
mahāhave vīravarau samīyatuḥ
yathā indrajambhāu iva karṇapāṇḍavau

11. Both were unconquerable, both were the destroyers of their enemies. Those two accomplished and skilled warriors sought to kill each other. In that great battle, the two supreme heroes, Karṇa and Arjuna (Pāṇḍava), met like Indra and Jambha.
ततो महास्त्राणि महाधनुर्धरौ विमुञ्चमानाविषुभिर्भयानकैः ।
नराश्वनागानमितौ निजघ्नतुः परस्परं जघ्नतुरुत्तमेषुभिः ॥१२॥
12. tato mahāstrāṇi mahādhanurdharau; vimuñcamānāviṣubhirbhayānakaiḥ ,
narāśvanāgānamitau nijaghnatuḥ; parasparaṁ jaghnaturuttameṣubhiḥ.
12. tataḥ mahāstrāṇi mahādhanurdharau
vimuñcamānau iṣubhiḥ bhayānakaiḥ
narāśvanāgān amitau nijaghnuḥ
parasparam jaghnuḥ uttameṣubhiḥ

(and) uttameṣubhiḥ parasparam jaghnuḥ
12. Then, the two unrivaled great bow-wielders, releasing terrifying arrows, struck down men, horses, and elephants. With their excellent arrows, they also struck each other.
ततो विसस्रुः पुनरर्दिताः शरैर्नरोत्तमाभ्यां कुरुपाण्डवाश्रयाः ।
सनागपत्त्यश्वरथा दिशो गतास्तथा यथा सिंहभयाद्वनौकसः ॥१३॥
13. tato visasruḥ punararditāḥ śarai;rnarottamābhyāṁ kurupāṇḍavāśrayāḥ ,
sanāgapattyaśvarathā diśo gatā;stathā yathā siṁhabhayādvanaukasaḥ.
13. tataḥ visasruḥ punaḥ arditāḥ śaraiḥ
narottamābhyām kurupāṇḍavāśrayāḥ
sanāgapattryaśvarathāḥ diśaḥ gatāḥ
tathā yathā siṃhabhayāt vanaukasaḥ
13. tataḥ punaḥ narottamābhyām śaraiḥ arditāḥ
kurupāṇḍavāśrayāḥ sanāgapattryaśvarathāḥ
visasruḥ (and) diśaḥ gatāḥ yathā
vanaukasaḥ siṃhabhayāt (gacchanti) tathā
13. Then, afflicted again by the arrows of those two supreme warriors, the soldiers of the Kurus and Pāṇḍavas, including their elephants, foot soldiers, horses, and chariots, fled in all directions, just as forest dwellers scatter from fear of a lion.
ततस्तु दुर्योधनभोजसौबलाः कृपश्च शारद्वतसूनुना सह ।
महारथाः पञ्च धनंजयाच्युतौ शरैः शरीरान्तकरैरताडयन् ॥१४॥
14. tatastu duryodhanabhojasaubalāḥ; kṛpaśca śāradvatasūnunā saha ,
mahārathāḥ pañca dhanaṁjayācyutau; śaraiḥ śarīrāntakarairatāḍayan.
14. tataḥ tu duryodhana-bhoja-saubalāḥ
kṛpaḥ ca śāradvatasūnunā saha
mahārathāḥ pañca dhanaṃjayācyutau
śaraiḥ śarīrāntakaraiḥ atāḍayan

mahārathāḥ tataḥ tu śarīrāntakaraiḥ
śaraiḥ dhanaṃjayācyutau atāḍayan
14. Then, Duryodhana, Kṛtavarman (Bhoja), Śakuni (Saubala), Kṛpa, and Aśvatthāmā (the son of Śaradvat) - these five great charioteers - struck Dhanaṃjaya and Acyuta with arrows that could destroy bodies.
धनूंषि तेषामिषुधीन्हयान्ध्वजान्रथांश्च सूतांश्च धनंजयः शरैः ।
समं च चिच्छेद पराभिनच्च ताञ्शरोत्तमैर्द्वादशभिश्च सूतजम् ॥१५॥
15. dhanūṁṣi teṣāmiṣudhīnhayāndhvajā;nrathāṁśca sūtāṁśca dhanaṁjayaḥ śaraiḥ ,
samaṁ ca ciccheda parābhinacca tā;ñśarottamairdvādaśabhiśca sūtajam.
15. dhanūṃṣi teṣām iṣudhīn hayān dhvajān
rathān ca sūtān ca dhanaṃjayaḥ śaraiḥ
samam ca ciccheda parābhinat ca
tān śarottamaiḥ dvādaśabhiḥ ca sūtajam
15. dhanaṃjayaḥ śaraiḥ teṣām dhanūṃṣi
iṣudhīn hayān dhvajān rathān ca sūtān
ca samam ciccheda ca dvādaśabhiḥ
śarottamaiḥ tān ca sūtajam parābhinat
15. Dhanaṃjaya (Arjuna), with his arrows, simultaneously cut down their bows, quivers, horses, banners, and chariots, as well as their charioteers. Moreover, with twelve excellent arrows, he pierced them and also the son of the charioteer (Karṇa).
अथाभ्यधावंस्त्वरिताः शतं रथाः शतं च नागार्जुनमाततायिनः ।
शकास्तुखारा यवनाश्च सादिनः सहैव काम्बोजवरैर्जिघांसवः ॥१६॥
16. athābhyadhāvaṁstvaritāḥ śataṁ rathāḥ; śataṁ ca nāgārjunamātatāyinaḥ ,
śakāstukhārā yavanāśca sādinaḥ; sahaiva kāmbojavarairjighāṁsavaḥ.
16. atha abhyadhāvan tvaritāḥ śatam rathāḥ
śatam ca nāgāḥ arjunam ātatāyinaḥ
śakāḥ tukhārāḥ yavanāḥ ca sādinaḥ
saha eva kāmbojavaraiḥ jighāṃsavaḥ
16. atha śatam tvaritāḥ rathāḥ ca śatam
nāgāḥ ātatāyinaḥ arjunam abhyadhāvan
ca śakāḥ tukhārāḥ yavanāḥ ca saha
eva kāmbojavaraiḥ sādinaḥ jighāṃsavaḥ
16. Then, a hundred swift charioteers and a hundred elephant warriors, who were aggressors, rushed towards Arjuna. The Śakas, Tukhāras, and Yavanas, along with the finest Kamboja horsemen, all eager to slay, also attacked.
वरायुधान्पाणिगतान्करैः सह क्षुरैर्न्यकृन्तंस्त्वरिताः शिरांसि च ।
हयांश्च नागांश्च रथांश्च युध्यतां धनंजयः शत्रुगणं तमक्षिणोत् ॥१७॥
17. varāyudhānpāṇigatānkaraiḥ saha; kṣurairnyakṛntaṁstvaritāḥ śirāṁsi ca ,
hayāṁśca nāgāṁśca rathāṁśca yudhyatāṁ; dhanaṁjayaḥ śatrugaṇaṁ tamakṣiṇot.
17. varāyudhān pāṇigatān karaiḥ saha
kṣuraiḥ nyakṛntan tvaritāḥ śirāṃsi ca
hayān ca nāgān ca rathān ca yudhyatām
dhanaṃjayaḥ śatrugaṇam tam akṣiṇot
17. dhanaṃjayaḥ tvaritāḥ kṣuraiḥ varāyudhān
pāṇigatān karaiḥ saha śirāṃsi ca
nyakṛntan ca yudhyatām tam śatrugaṇam
hayān ca nāgān ca rathān ca akṣiṇot
17. Dhanaṃjaya (Arjuna), swiftly and with razor-sharp arrows, cut off the excellent weapons held in their hands, along with their hands and heads. He then completely destroyed that entire host of fighting enemies, including their horses, elephants, and chariots.
ततोऽन्तरिक्षे सुरतूर्यनिस्वनाः ससाधुवादा हृषितैः समीरिताः ।
निपेतुरप्युत्तमपुष्पवृष्टयः सुरूपगन्धाः पवनेरिताः शिवाः ॥१८॥
18. tato'ntarikṣe suratūryanisvanāḥ; sasādhuvādā hṛṣitaiḥ samīritāḥ ,
nipeturapyuttamapuṣpavṛṣṭayaḥ; surūpagandhāḥ pavaneritāḥ śivāḥ.
18. tatas antarikṣe suratūryanīsvanāḥ
sasādhuvādāḥ hṛṣitaiḥ samīritāḥ
nipetuḥ api uttamapuṣpavṛṣṭayaḥ
surūpagandhāḥ pavaneritāḥ śivāḥ

suratūryanīsvanāḥ samīritāḥ

śivāḥ uttamapuṣpavṛṣṭayaḥ nipetuḥ
18. Then, in the sky, the delighted celestials sounded divine trumpets accompanied by acclamations. Auspicious showers of excellent, fragrant flowers, beautiful in form and stirred by the wind, also fell down.
तदद्भुतं देवमनुष्यसाक्षिकं समीक्ष्य भूतानि विसिष्मियुर्नृप ।
तवात्मजः सूतसुतश्च न व्यथां न विस्मयं जग्मतुरेकनिश्चयौ ॥१९॥
19. tadadbhutaṁ devamanuṣyasākṣikaṁ; samīkṣya bhūtāni visiṣmiyurnṛpa ,
tavātmajaḥ sūtasutaśca na vyathāṁ; na vismayaṁ jagmaturekaniścayau.
19. tat adbhutam devamanuṣyasākṣikam
samīkṣya bhūtāni visismayuḥ nṛpa
tava ātmajaḥ sūtasutaḥ ca na vyathām
na vismayam jagmatuḥ ekanīścayau

19. O King, observing that marvel, which was witnessed by both gods and men, all beings were greatly astonished. However, your son (Duryodhana) and the charioteer's son (Karṇa), resolute in their single determination, experienced neither distress nor astonishment.
अथाब्रवीद्द्रोणसुतस्तवात्मजं करं करेण प्रतिपीड्य सान्त्वयन् ।
प्रसीद दुर्योधन शाम्य पाण्डवैरलं विरोधेन धिगस्तु विग्रहम् ॥२०॥
20. athābravīddroṇasutastavātmajaṁ; karaṁ kareṇa pratipīḍya sāntvayan ,
prasīda duryodhana śāmya pāṇḍavai;ralaṁ virodhena dhigastu vigraham.
20. atha abravīt droṇasutaḥ tava ātmajam
karam kareṇa pratīpīḍya sāntvayan
prasīda duryodhana śāmya pāṇḍavaiḥ
alam virodhena dhik astu vigraham
20. atha droṇasutaḥ tava ātmajam karam

duryodhana prasīda pāṇḍavaiḥ

20. Then Drona's son (Ashvatthama), consoling your son (Duryodhana) while pressing his hand, said: "O Duryodhana, please calm down and cease your hostility with the Pandavas. Enough of this conflict! Let war be condemned!"
हतो गुरुर्ब्रह्मसमो महास्त्रवित्तथैव भीष्मप्रमुखा नरर्षभाः ।
अहं त्ववध्यो मम चापि मातुलः प्रशाधि राज्यं सह पाण्डवैश्चिरम् ॥२१॥
21. hato gururbrahmasamo mahāstravi;ttathaiva bhīṣmapramukhā nararṣabhāḥ ,
ahaṁ tvavadhyo mama cāpi mātulaḥ; praśādhi rājyaṁ saha pāṇḍavaiściram.
21. hataḥ guruḥ brahmasamaḥ mahāstravit
tathā eva bhīṣmapramukhāḥ nararṣabhāḥ
aham tu avadhyaḥ mama ca api mātulaḥ
praśādhi rājyam saha pāṇḍavaiḥ ciram
21. brahmasamaḥ mahāstravit guruḥ hataḥ
tathā eva bhīṣmapramukhāḥ nararṣabhāḥ
aham tu avadhyaḥ ca api mama mātulaḥ
pāṇḍavaiḥ saha rājyam ciram praśādhi
21. The teacher (guru) (Drona), who was like the supreme spiritual reality (brahman) and a knower of great weapons, has been killed. Similarly, chief among men like Bhishma have also been killed. But I am not to be killed, and neither is my maternal uncle (Shakuni). Therefore, rule the kingdom together with the Pandavas for a long time.
धनंजयः स्थास्यति वारितो मया जनार्दनो नैव विरोधमिच्छति ।
युधिष्ठिरो भूतहिते सदा रतो वृकोदरस्तद्वशगस्तथा यमौ ॥२२॥
22. dhanaṁjayaḥ sthāsyati vārito mayā; janārdano naiva virodhamicchati ,
yudhiṣṭhiro bhūtahite sadā rato; vṛkodarastadvaśagastathā yamau.

janārdanaḥ na eva virodham icchati

22. Arjuna (Dhanañjaya) will be stopped by me. Kṛṣṇa (Janārdana) certainly does not desire conflict. Yudhiṣṭhira is always dedicated to the welfare of all beings, and Bhīma, as well as the twins (Nakula and Sahadeva), are subservient to him.
त्वया च पार्थैश्च परस्परेण प्रजाः शिवं प्राप्नुयुरिच्छति त्वयि ।
व्रजन्तु शेषाः स्वपुराणि पार्थिवा निवृत्तवैराश्च भवन्तु सैनिकाः ॥२३॥
23. tvayā ca pārthaiśca paraspareṇa; prajāḥ śivaṁ prāpnuyuricchati tvayi ,
vrajantu śeṣāḥ svapurāṇi pārthivā; nivṛttavairāśca bhavantu sainikāḥ.

23. And through you and the Pāṇḍavas, by mutual agreement, the people may attain welfare if you (Duryodhana) wish it. Let the remaining kings return to their own cities, and let the soldiers be free from hostility.
न चेद्वचः श्रोष्यसि मे नराधिप ध्रुवं प्रतप्तासि हतोऽरिभिर्युधि ।
इदं च दृष्टं जगता सह त्वया कृतं यदेकेन किरीटमालिना ।
यथा न कुर्याद्बलभिन्न चान्तको न च प्रचेता भगवान्न यक्षराट् ॥२४॥
24. na cedvacaḥ śroṣyasi me narādhipa; dhruvaṁ prataptāsi hato'ribhiryudhi ,
idaṁ ca dṛṣṭaṁ jagatā saha tvayā; kṛtaṁ yadekena kirīṭamālinā ,
yathā na kuryādbalabhinna cāntako; na ca pracetā bhagavānna yakṣarāṭ.
24. na cet vacaḥ śroṣyasi me narādhipa dhruvam prataptāsi
hataḥ aribhiḥ yudhi idam ca dṛṣṭam jagatā saha tvayā
kṛtam yat ekena kirīṭamālinā yathā na kuryāt balabhit
na ca antakaḥ na ca pracetā bhagavān na yakṣarāṭ
24. na cet me vacaḥ śroṣyasi narādhipa dhruvam prataptāsi
hataḥ aribhiḥ yudhi ca idam dṛṣṭam jagatā saha tvayā
kṛtam yat ekena kirīṭamālinā yathā na kuryāt balabhit
na ca antakaḥ na ca pracetā bhagavān na yakṣarāṭ
24. O king of men, if you do not listen to my words, you will surely be tormented and slain by your enemies in battle. And the world, along with you, has witnessed what was accomplished by that single crowned one (Arjuna) – a feat that neither Indra (Balabhit), nor Yama (Antaka), nor the revered Varuṇa (Pracetas), nor Kubera (Yakṣarāṭ) would perform.
अतोऽपि भूयांश्च गुणैर्धनंजयः स चाभिपत्स्यत्यखिलं वचो मम ।
तवानुयात्रां च तथा करिष्यति प्रसीद राजञ्जगतः शमाय वै ॥२५॥
25. ato'pi bhūyāṁśca guṇairdhanaṁjayaḥ; sa cābhipatsyatyakhilaṁ vaco mama ,
tavānuyātrāṁ ca tathā kariṣyati; prasīda rājañjagataḥ śamāya vai.
25. ataḥ api bhūyān ca guṇaiḥ dhanañjayaḥ
saḥ ca abhipatsyati akhilam vacaḥ
mama tava anuyātrām ca tathā
kariṣyati prasīda rājan jagataḥ śamāya vai
25. ataḥ api guṇaiḥ dhanañjayaḥ bhūyān
ca saḥ ca mama akhilam vacaḥ abhipatsyati
ca tathā tava anuyātrām
kariṣyati rājan jagataḥ śamāya vai prasīda
25. Moreover, Arjuna (Dhanañjaya) is even greater in his qualities, and he will fully comply with all my words. He will also, in that way, act in accordance with your wishes. O King, be gracious for the peace of the world.
ममापि मानः परमः सदा त्वयि ब्रवीम्यतस्त्वां परमाच्च सौहृदात् ।
निवारयिष्यामि हि कर्णमप्यहं यदा भवान्सप्रणयो भविष्यति ॥२६॥
26. mamāpi mānaḥ paramaḥ sadā tvayi; bravīmyatastvāṁ paramācca sauhṛdāt ,
nivārayiṣyāmi hi karṇamapyahaṁ; yadā bhavānsapraṇayo bhaviṣyati.
26. mama api mānaḥ paramaḥ sadā tvayi
bravīmi ataḥ tvām paramāt ca sauhṛdāt
nivārayiṣyāmi hi karṇam api aham
yadā bhavān sapraṇayaḥ bhaviṣyati
26. tvayi mama api paramaḥ mānaḥ sadā (asti).
ataḥ paramāt ca sauhṛdāt tvām bravīmi.
yadā bhavān sapraṇayaḥ bhaviṣyati,
hi aham karṇam api nivārayiṣyāmi.
26. My highest respect (māna) is always for you. Therefore, I speak to you out of extreme friendship. Indeed, I will restrain even Karna, provided you become favorably inclined.
वदन्ति मित्रं सहजं विचक्षणास्तथैव साम्ना च धनेन चार्जितम् ।
प्रतापतश्चोपनतं चतुर्विधं तदस्ति सर्वं त्वयि पाण्डवेषु च ॥२७॥
27. vadanti mitraṁ sahajaṁ vicakṣaṇā;stathaiva sāmnā ca dhanena cārjitam ,
pratāpataścopanataṁ caturvidhaṁ; tadasti sarvaṁ tvayi pāṇḍaveṣu ca.
27. vadanti mitram sahajam vicakṣaṇāḥ
tathā eva sāmnā ca dhanena ca ārjitam
pratāpataḥ ca upanatam caturvidham
tat asti sarvam tvayi pāṇḍaveṣu ca
27. vicakṣaṇāḥ mitram sahajam,
sāmnā ca dhanena ca ārjitam,
pratāpataḥ ca upanatam caturvidham (iti) vadanti.
tat sarvam tvayi pāṇḍaveṣu ca eva asti.
27. The wise declare four kinds of friendship: natural, that acquired through conciliation (sāman) and wealth, and that gained by prowess. All these types exist in both you and the Pandavas.
निसर्गतस्ते तव वीर बान्धवाः पुनश्च साम्ना च समाप्नुहि स्थिरम् ।
त्वयि प्रसन्ने यदि मित्रतामियुर्ध्रुवं नरेन्द्रेन्द्र तथा त्वमाचर ॥२८॥
28. nisargataste tava vīra bāndhavāḥ; punaśca sāmnā ca samāpnuhi sthiram ,
tvayi prasanne yadi mitratāmiyu;rdhruvaṁ narendrendra tathā tvamācara.
28. nisargataḥ te tava vīra bāndhavāḥ
punaḥ ca sāmnā ca samāpnuhi sthiram
tvayi prasanne yadi mitratām iyuḥ
dhruvam narendrendra tathā tvam ācara
28. vīra,
te tava bāndhavāḥ nisargataḥ (santi).
punaḥ ca sāmnā (tvam) sthiram (śāntim) samāpnuhi.
yadi tvayi prasanne (sati),
(te) mitratām iyuḥ.
narendrendra,
dhruvam tathā tvam ācara.
28. O hero, by their very nature, these are your kinsmen. Moreover, through conciliation (sāman), you should attain a stable peace. If you become pleased, they will surely achieve friendship (mitratā). Therefore, O chief of kings (narendrendra), you must act in that manner.
स एवमुक्तः सुहृदा वचो हितं विचिन्त्य निःश्वस्य च दुर्मनाब्रवीत् ।
यथा भवानाह सखे तथैव तन्ममापि च ज्ञापयतो वचः शृणु ॥२९॥
29. sa evamuktaḥ suhṛdā vaco hitaṁ; vicintya niḥśvasya ca durmanābravīt ,
yathā bhavānāha sakhe tathaiva ta;nmamāpi ca jñāpayato vacaḥ śṛṇu.
29. saḥ evam uktaḥ suhṛdā vacaḥ hitam
vicintya niḥśvasya ca durmanāḥ abravīt
yathā bhavān āha sakhe tathā eva
tat mama api ca jñāpayataḥ vacaḥ śṛṇu
29. suhṛdā evam hitam vacaḥ uktaḥ saḥ,
vicintya ca niḥśvasya,
durmanāḥ (san) abravīt.
(saḥ uvāca) "sakhe,
yathā bhavān āha,
tathā eva tat.
mama api jñāpayataḥ vacaḥ ca śṛṇu.
"
29. Thus addressed by his friend with beneficial words, he reflected, sighed, and spoke with a heavy heart. 'O friend, just as you have said, listen now to my words, which also convey my thoughts to you.'
निहत्य दुःशासनमुक्तवान्बहु प्रसह्य शार्दूलवदेष दुर्मतिः ।
वृकोदरस्तद्धृदये मम स्थितं न तत्परोक्षं भवतः कुतः शमः ॥३०॥
30. nihatya duḥśāsanamuktavānbahu; prasahya śārdūlavadeṣa durmatiḥ ,
vṛkodarastaddhṛdaye mama sthitaṁ; na tatparokṣaṁ bhavataḥ kutaḥ śamaḥ.
30. nihatya duḥśāsanam muktavān bahu
prasahya śārdūlavat eṣa durmatiḥ
vṛkodaraḥ tat hṛdaye mama sthitam na
tat parokṣam bhavataḥ kutaḥ śamaḥ
30. eṣa durmatiḥ vṛkodaraḥ duḥśāsanam
nihatya śārdūlavat prasahya bahu
muktavān tat mama hṛdaye sthitam tat
bhavataḥ na parokṣam kutaḥ śamaḥ
30. This wicked Bhīma (vṛkodaraḥ), having killed Duḥśāsana, forcibly released a great deal (of blood) like a tiger. That (deed) remains fixed in my heart. It is not hidden from you. From where, then, can there be peace?
न चापि कर्णं गुरुपुत्र संस्तवादुपारमेत्यर्हसि वक्तुमच्युत ।
श्रमेण युक्तो महताद्य फल्गुनस्तमेष कर्णः प्रसभं हनिष्यति ॥३१॥
31. na cāpi karṇaṁ guruputra saṁstavā;dupārametyarhasi vaktumacyuta ,
śrameṇa yukto mahatādya phalguna;stameṣa karṇaḥ prasabhaṁ haniṣyati.
31. na ca api karṇam guruputra saṃstavāt
upāramet iti arhasi vaktum acyuta
śrameṇa yuktaḥ mahatā adya phālgunaḥ
tam eṣa karṇaḥ prasabham haniṣyati
31. acyuta guruputra karṇam saṃstavāt
upāramet iti vaktum na ca api arhasi
adya phālgunaḥ mahatā śrameṇa yuktaḥ
eṣa karṇaḥ tam prasabham haniṣyati
31. O Acyuta (Kṛṣṇa), you should not speak to stop (the fight with) Karṇa on account of praising the preceptor's son (Aśvatthāman). For today, Arjuna (phālgunaḥ), afflicted with great weariness, this Karṇa will forcibly kill him.
तमेवमुक्त्वाभ्यनुनीय चासकृत्तवात्मजः स्वाननुशास्ति सैनिकान् ।
समाघ्नताभिद्रवताहितानिमान्सबाणशब्दान्किमु जोषमास्यते ॥३२॥
32. tamevamuktvābhyanunīya cāsakṛ;ttavātmajaḥ svānanuśāsti sainikān ,
samāghnatābhidravatāhitānimā;nsabāṇaśabdānkimu joṣamāsyate.
32. tam evam uktvā abhyanunīya ca asakṛt
tava ātmajaḥ svān anuśāsti sainikān
samāghnatā abhidravatā ahitān
imān sabāṇaśabdān kimu joṣam āsyate
32. tava ātmajaḥ tam evam uktvā ca asakṛt
abhyanunīya svān sainikān anuśāsti "kimu
joṣam āsyate (yadā) imān sabāṇaśabdān
ahitān samāghnatā abhidravatā (santi)"
32. Having thus spoken to him and repeatedly conciliated him, your son (Duryodhana) instructs his own soldiers: 'Why are you sitting silently while these enemies, with their showering arrows, are striking and assailing?'
