यया बुद्ध्या महीपालो भ्रष्टश्रीर्विचरेन्महीम् ।
कालदण्डविनिष्पिष्टस्तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
yayā buddhyā mahīpālo bhraṣṭaśrīrvicarenmahīm ,
kāladaṇḍaviniṣpiṣṭastanme brūhi pitāmaha.

1. Yudhishthira said: "O Grandfather, please tell me, by what insight does a king, having lost his glory and being crushed by the rod of time, wander the earth?"
भीष्म उवाच ।
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् ।
वासवस्य च संवादं बलेर्वैरोचनस्य च ॥२॥
2. bhīṣma uvāca ,
atrāpyudāharantīmamitihāsaṁ purātanam ,
vāsavasya ca saṁvādaṁ balervairocanasya ca.
2. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca atra api udāharanti imam itihāsam
purātanam vāsavasya ca saṃvādam baleḥ vairocanasya ca

2. Bhishma said: "Regarding this, they also narrate an ancient story (itihāsa) – the dialogue between Vasava (Indra) and Bali, the son of Virochana."
पितामहमुपागत्य प्रणिपत्य कृताञ्जलिः ।
सर्वानेवासुराञ्जित्वा बलिं पप्रच्छ वासवः ॥३॥
3. pitāmahamupāgatya praṇipatya kṛtāñjaliḥ ,
sarvānevāsurāñjitvā baliṁ papraccha vāsavaḥ.

eva asurān jitvā balim papraccha vāsavaḥ

3. Vasava (Indra), having approached the Grandfather (Brahma) and bowed respectfully with folded hands, then, after conquering all the Asuras, inquired about Bali.
यस्य स्म ददतो वित्तं न कदाचन हीयते ।
तं बलिं नाधिगच्छामि ब्रह्मन्नाचक्ष्व मे बलिम् ॥४॥
4. yasya sma dadato vittaṁ na kadācana hīyate ,
taṁ baliṁ nādhigacchāmi brahmannācakṣva me balim.

balim na adhigacchāmi brahman ācakṣva me balim
4. brahman yasya dadato vittam kadācana na hīyate

4. O Brahmana, I cannot find that Bali whose wealth never diminished, even when he was giving it away. Please tell me about Bali.
स एव ह्यस्तमयते स स्म विद्योतते दिशः ।
स वर्षति स्म वर्षाणि यथाकालमतन्द्रितः ।
तं बलिं नाधिगच्छामि ब्रह्मन्नाचक्ष्व मे बलिम् ॥५॥
5. sa eva hyastamayate sa sma vidyotate diśaḥ ,
sa varṣati sma varṣāṇi yathākālamatandritaḥ ,
taṁ baliṁ nādhigacchāmi brahmannācakṣva me balim.
5. saḥ eva hi astamayate saḥ sma vidyotate
diśaḥ saḥ varṣati sma varṣāṇi
yathākālam atandritaḥ tam balim na
adhigacchāmi brahman ācakṣva me balim
5. Indeed, he alone sets; he illuminates all directions; he rains showers at the proper time without weariness. I do not comprehend that tribute. O Brahmin, please explain that tribute to me.
स वायुर्वरुणश्चैव स रविः स च चन्द्रमाः ।
सोऽग्निस्तपति भूतानि पृथिवी च भवत्युत ।
तं बलिं नाधिगच्छामि ब्रह्मन्नाचक्ष्व मे बलिम् ॥६॥
6. sa vāyurvaruṇaścaiva sa raviḥ sa ca candramāḥ ,
so'gnistapati bhūtāni pṛthivī ca bhavatyuta ,
taṁ baliṁ nādhigacchāmi brahmannācakṣva me balim.
6. saḥ vāyuḥ varuṇaḥ ca eva saḥ raviḥ saḥ
ca candramāḥ saḥ agniḥ tapati bhūtāni
pṛthivī ca bhavati uta tam balim na
adhigacchāmi brahman ācakṣva me balim
6. He is Vayu and Varuna; he is Ravi (the sun) and Chandrama (the moon). He is Agni who heats all beings, and indeed, he becomes the Earth. I do not comprehend that tribute. O Brahmin, please explain that tribute to me.
ब्रह्मोवाच ।
नैतत्ते साधु मघवन्यदेतदनुपृच्छसि ।
पृष्टस्तु नानृतं ब्रूयात्तस्माद्वक्ष्यामि ते बलिम् ॥७॥
7. brahmovāca ,
naitatte sādhu maghavanyadetadanupṛcchasi ,
pṛṣṭastu nānṛtaṁ brūyāttasmādvakṣyāmi te balim.
7. brahmā uvāca na etat te sādhu maghavan yat etat anupṛcchasi
pṛṣṭaḥ tu na anṛtam brūyāt tasmāt vakṣyāmi te balim
7. Brahma said: O Maghavan (Indra), this that you are asking is not proper for you. However, one who is questioned should not speak untruth, therefore I will explain that tribute to you.
उष्ट्रेषु यदि वा गोषु खरेष्वश्वेषु वा पुनः ।
वरिष्ठो भविता जन्तुः शून्यागारे शचीपते ॥८॥
8. uṣṭreṣu yadi vā goṣu khareṣvaśveṣu vā punaḥ ,
variṣṭho bhavitā jantuḥ śūnyāgāre śacīpate.
8. uṣṭreṣu yadi vā goṣu khareṣu aśveṣu vā punaḥ
variṣṭhaḥ bhavitā jantuḥ śūnyāgāre śacīpate
8. O husband of Sachi (Indra), whether among camels, or cows, or donkeys, or horses, the most excellent creature will be found in an empty house.
शक्र उवाच ।
यदि स्म बलिना ब्रह्मञ्शून्यागारे समेयिवान् ।
हन्यामेनं न वा हन्यां तद्ब्रह्मन्ननुशाधि माम् ॥९॥
9. śakra uvāca ,
yadi sma balinā brahmañśūnyāgāre sameyivān ,
hanyāmenaṁ na vā hanyāṁ tadbrahmannanuśādhi mām.
9. śakra uvāca yadi sma balinā brahman śūnyāgāre sameyivān
hanyām enam na vā hanyām tat brahman anuśādhi mām
9. śakra uvāca brahman yadi sma balinā śūnyāgāre sameyivān
enam hanyām vā na hanyām tat brahman mām anuśādhi
9. Indra said: 'O Brahmā, if I were to encounter Bali in a deserted house, should I kill him or not kill him? Please instruct me on this, O Brahmā.'
ब्रह्मोवाच ।
मा स्म शक्र बलिं हिंसीर्न बलिर्वधमर्हति ।
न्यायांस्तु शक्र प्रष्टव्यस्त्वया वासव काम्यया ॥१०॥
10. brahmovāca ,
mā sma śakra baliṁ hiṁsīrna balirvadhamarhati ,
nyāyāṁstu śakra praṣṭavyastvayā vāsava kāmyayā.
10. brahmā uvāca mā sma śakra balim hiṃsīḥ na baliḥ vadham
arhati nyāyān tu śakra praṣṭavyaḥ tvayā vāsava kāmyayā
10. brahmā uvāca śakra mā sma balim hiṃsīḥ baliḥ vadham na
arhati śakra vāsava tvayā kāmyayā nyāyān tu praṣṭavyaḥ
10. Brahmā said: 'O Indra, do not harm Bali; Bali does not deserve death. Rather, O Indra, you should ask him for what is righteous (dharma) as per your wish.'
भीष्म उवाच ।
एवमुक्तो भगवता महेन्द्रः पृथिवीं तदा ।
चचारैरावतस्कन्धमधिरुह्य श्रिया वृतः ॥११॥
11. bhīṣma uvāca ,
evamukto bhagavatā mahendraḥ pṛthivīṁ tadā ,
cacārairāvataskandhamadhiruhya śriyā vṛtaḥ.
11. bhīṣma uvāca evam uktaḥ bhagavatā mahendraḥ pṛthivīm
tadā cacāra airāvataskandham adhiruhya śriyā vṛtaḥ
11. bhīṣma uvāca tadā bhagavatā evam uktaḥ mahendraḥ
airāvataskandham adhiruhya śriyā vṛtaḥ pṛthivīm cacāra
11. Bhīṣma said: 'Thus addressed by the venerable one, Mahendra then roamed the earth, having mounted Airāvata's shoulder and being surrounded by splendor.'
ततो ददर्श स बलिं खरवेषेण संवृतम् ।
यथाख्यातं भगवता शून्यागारकृतालयम् ॥१२॥
12. tato dadarśa sa baliṁ kharaveṣeṇa saṁvṛtam ,
yathākhyātaṁ bhagavatā śūnyāgārakṛtālayam.
12. tataḥ dadarśa saḥ balim kharaveṣeṇa saṃvṛtam
yathā ākhyātam bhagavatā śūnyāgārakṛtālayam
12. tataḥ saḥ bhagavatā yathā ākhyātam kharaveṣeṇa
saṃvṛtam śūnyāgārakṛtālayam balim dadarśa
12. Then, Indra saw Bali, disguised in the form of a donkey, who had made his dwelling in a deserted house, just as the venerable one had described.
शक्र उवाच ।
खरयोनिमनुप्राप्तस्तुषभक्षोऽसि दानव ।
इयं ते योनिरधमा शोचस्याहो न शोचसि ॥१३॥
13. śakra uvāca ,
kharayonimanuprāptastuṣabhakṣo'si dānava ,
iyaṁ te yoniradhamā śocasyāho na śocasi.
13. śakra uvāca kharayonim anuprāptaḥ tuṣabhakṣaḥ asi
dānava iyam te yoniḥ adhamā śocasi aho na śocasi
13. śakra uvāca he dānava kharayonim anuprāptaḥ tuṣabhakṣaḥ
asi iyam te adhamā yoniḥ aho śocasi na śocasi
13. Śakra said: "O Dānava, you have attained the birth of a donkey and now you eat chaff. This is your lowest existence. Do you lament your state, or do you not?"
अदृष्टं बत पश्यामि द्विषतां वशमागतम् ।
श्रिया विहीनं मित्रैश्च भ्रष्टवीर्यपराक्रमम् ॥१४॥
14. adṛṣṭaṁ bata paśyāmi dviṣatāṁ vaśamāgatam ,
śriyā vihīnaṁ mitraiśca bhraṣṭavīryaparākramam.
14. adṛṣṭam bata paśyāmi dviṣatām vaśam āgatam
śriyā vihīnam mitraiḥ ca bhraṣṭavīryaparākramam
14. bata adṛṣṭam paśyāmi dviṣatām vaśam āgatam
śriyā mitraiḥ ca vihīnam bhraṣṭavīryaparākramam
14. "Alas, I behold a sight never seen before: [you] have fallen under the control of your enemies, devoid of prosperity and friends, and stripped of your might and valor."
यत्तद्यानसहस्रेण ज्ञातिभिः परिवारितः ।
लोकान्प्रतापयन्सर्वान्यास्यस्मानवितर्कयन् ॥१५॥
15. yattadyānasahasreṇa jñātibhiḥ parivāritaḥ ,
lokānpratāpayansarvānyāsyasmānavitarkayan.
15. yat tat yānasahasreṇa jñātibhiḥ parivāritaḥ
lokān pratāpayan sarvān yāsi asmān avitarkayan
15. yat tat jñātibhiḥ yānasahasreṇa parivāritaḥ
sarvān lokān pratāpayan asmān avitarkayan yāsi
15. "You, who, surrounded by thousands of chariots and your kinsmen, used to torment all worlds, utterly disregarding us."
त्वन्मुखाश्चैव दैतेया व्यतिष्ठंस्तव शासने ।
अकृष्टपच्या पृथिवी तवैश्वर्ये बभूव ह ।
इदं च तेऽद्य व्यसनं शोचस्याहो न शोचसि ॥१६॥
16. tvanmukhāścaiva daiteyā vyatiṣṭhaṁstava śāsane ,
akṛṣṭapacyā pṛthivī tavaiśvarye babhūva ha ,
idaṁ ca te'dya vyasanaṁ śocasyāho na śocasi.
16. tvat-mukhāḥ ca eva daiteyāḥ vyatiṣṭhan
tava śāsane akṛṣṭapacyā pṛthivī
tava aiśvarye babhūva ha idam ca te
adya vyasanam śocasi aho na śocasi
16. eva ca tvat-mukhāḥ daiteyāḥ tava
śāsane vyatiṣṭhan ha tava aiśvarye
pṛthivī akṛṣṭapacyā babhūva ca idam te
adya vyasanam aho śocasi na śocasi
16. "And indeed, with you as their leader, the Daityas submitted to your rule. In your dominion, the earth used to yield crops without cultivation. And this distress of yours today—do you lament it, or do you not?"
यदातिष्ठः समुद्रस्य पूर्वकूले विलेलिहन् ।
ज्ञातिभ्यो विभजन्वित्तं तदासीत्ते मनः कथम् ॥१७॥
17. yadātiṣṭhaḥ samudrasya pūrvakūle vilelihan ,
jñātibhyo vibhajanvittaṁ tadāsītte manaḥ katham.
17. yadā atiṣṭhaḥ samudrasya pūrvakūle vilelihan
jñātibhyaḥ vibhajan vittam tadā āsīt te manaḥ katham
17. yadā samudrasya pūrvakūle atiṣṭhaḥ vilelihan,
jñātibhyaḥ vittam vibhajan,
tadā te manaḥ katham āsīt?
17. When you resided on the eastern shore of the ocean, savoring its vastness, and distributing wealth to your relatives, how was your mind then?
यत्ते सहस्रसमिता ननृतुर्देवयोषितः ।
बहूनि वर्षपूगानि विहारे दीप्यतः श्रिया ॥१८॥
18. yatte sahasrasamitā nanṛturdevayoṣitaḥ ,
bahūni varṣapūgāni vihāre dīpyataḥ śriyā.
18. yat te sahasrasamitā nanṛtuḥ devayoṣitaḥ
bahūni varṣapūgāni vihāre dīpyataḥ śriyā
18. yat te sahasrasamitā devayoṣitaḥ bahūni varṣapūgāni vihāre dīpyataḥ śriyā nanṛtuḥ.
18. When your thousand celestial maidens danced for many years in enjoyment, while you were shining with splendor.
सर्वाः पुष्करमालिन्यः सर्वाः काञ्चनसप्रभाः ।
कथमद्य तदा चैव मनस्ते दानवेश्वर ॥१९॥
19. sarvāḥ puṣkaramālinyaḥ sarvāḥ kāñcanasaprabhāḥ ,
kathamadya tadā caiva manaste dānaveśvara.
19. sarvāḥ puṣkaramālinyaḥ sarvāḥ kāñcanasaprabhāḥ
katham adya tadā ca eva manaḥ te dānaveśvara
19. sarvāḥ puṣkaramālinyaḥ,
sarvāḥ kāñcanasaprabhāḥ (āsan).
dānaveśvara,
adya ca eva tadā te manaḥ katham (vartate)?
19. All of them (the celestial maidens) were adorned with lotus garlands, and all possessed the radiance of gold. O Lord of the Daityas, how is your mind today, compared to how it was then?
छत्रं तवासीत्सुमहत्सौवर्णं मणिभूषितम् ।
ननृतुर्यत्र गन्धर्वाः षट्सहस्राणि सप्तधा ॥२०॥
20. chatraṁ tavāsītsumahatsauvarṇaṁ maṇibhūṣitam ,
nanṛturyatra gandharvāḥ ṣaṭsahasrāṇi saptadhā.
20. chatram tava āsīt sumahat sauvarṇam maṇibhūṣitam
nanṛtuḥ yatra gandharvāḥ ṣaṭsahasrāṇi saptadhā
20. tava sumahat sauvarṇam maṇibhūṣitam chatram āsīt,
yatra ṣaṭsahasrāṇi gandharvāḥ saptadhā nanṛtuḥ.
20. Your canopy was magnificent, golden, and adorned with jewels. Under it, six thousand Gandharvas danced in seven distinct ways.
यूपस्तवासीत्सुमहान्यजतः सर्वकाञ्चनः ।
यत्राददः सहस्राणामयुतानि गवां दश ॥२१॥
21. yūpastavāsītsumahānyajataḥ sarvakāñcanaḥ ,
yatrādadaḥ sahasrāṇāmayutāni gavāṁ daśa.
21. yūpaḥ tava āsīt sumahān yajataḥ sarvakāñcanaḥ
yatra adadaḥ sahasrāṇām ayutāni gavām daśa
21. tava yūpaḥ sumahān sarvakāñcanaḥ āsīt
yatra daśa sahasrāṇām ayutāni gavām adadaḥ
21. Your sacrificial post was very grand and entirely golden, O sacrificer, at which (sacrifice) you gave a hundred thousand cows.
यदा तु पृथिवीं सर्वां यजमानोऽनुपर्ययाः ।
शम्याक्षेपेण विधिना तदासीत्किं नु ते हृदि ॥२२॥
22. yadā tu pṛthivīṁ sarvāṁ yajamāno'nuparyayāḥ ,
śamyākṣepeṇa vidhinā tadāsītkiṁ nu te hṛdi.
22. yadā tu pṛthivīm sarvām yajamānaḥ anuparyayāḥ
śamyākṣepeṇa vidhinā tat āsīt kim nu te hṛdi
22. yadā tu yajamānaḥ śamyākṣepeṇa vidhinā sarvām
pṛthivīm anuparyayāḥ tadā te hṛdi kim nu āsīt
22. But when you, the sacrificer, circumambulated the entire earth by the method of throwing a staff, what then was truly in your heart?
न ते पश्यामि भृङ्गारं न छत्रं व्यजनं न च ।
ब्रह्मदत्तां च ते मालां न पश्याम्यसुराधिप ॥२३॥
23. na te paśyāmi bhṛṅgāraṁ na chatraṁ vyajanaṁ na ca ,
brahmadattāṁ ca te mālāṁ na paśyāmyasurādhipa.
23. na te paśyāmi bhṛṅgāram na chatram vyajanam na ca
brahmadattām ca te mālām na paśyāmi asura-adhipa
23. asurādhipa te bhṛṅgāram na paśyāmi chatram na
vyajanam ca na te brahmadattām mālām ca na paśyāmi
23. O lord of asuras, I do not see your golden pitcher, nor your umbrella, nor your fan, nor your garland bestowed by Brahmā.
बलिरुवाच ।
न त्वं पश्यसि भृङ्गारं न छत्रं व्यजनं न च ।
ब्रह्मदत्तां च मे मालां न त्वं द्रक्ष्यसि वासव ॥२४॥
24. baliruvāca ,
na tvaṁ paśyasi bhṛṅgāraṁ na chatraṁ vyajanaṁ na ca ,
brahmadattāṁ ca me mālāṁ na tvaṁ drakṣyasi vāsava.
24. baliḥ uvāca na tvam paśyasi bhṛṅgāram na chatram vyajanam
na ca brahmadattām ca me mālām na tvam drakṣyasi vāsava
24. baliḥ uvāca tvam bhṛṅgāram na paśyasi chatram na vyajanam
ca na tvam me brahmadattām mālām ca na drakṣyasi vāsava
24. Bali said: 'You do not see the golden pitcher, nor the umbrella, nor the fan. And you will not see my garland bestowed by Brahmā, O Vāsava.'
गुहायां निहितानि त्वं मम रत्नानि पृच्छसि ।
यदा मे भविता कालस्तदा त्वं तानि द्रक्ष्यसि ॥२५॥
25. guhāyāṁ nihitāni tvaṁ mama ratnāni pṛcchasi ,
yadā me bhavitā kālastadā tvaṁ tāni drakṣyasi.
25. guhāyām nihitāni tvam mama ratnāni pṛcchasi
yadā me bhavitā kālaḥ tadā tvam tāni drakṣyasi
25. tvam mama guhāyām nihitāni ratnāni pṛcchasi
yadā me kālaḥ bhavitā tadā tvam tāni drakṣyasi
25. You ask for my treasures hidden in the cave. When my time comes, then you will see them.
न त्वेतदनुरूपं ते यशसो वा कुलस्य वा ।
समृद्धार्थोऽसमृद्धार्थं यन्मां कत्थितुमिच्छसि ॥२६॥
26. na tvetadanurūpaṁ te yaśaso vā kulasya vā ,
samṛddhārtho'samṛddhārthaṁ yanmāṁ katthitumicchasi.
26. na tu etat anurūpam te yaśasaḥ vā kulasya vā
samṛddhārthaḥ asamṛddhārtham yat mām katthitum icchasi
26. tu etat te yaśasaḥ vā kulasya vā na anurūpam yat
samṛddhārthaḥ mām asamṛddhārtham katthitum icchasi
26. Indeed, this is not suitable for you, given your fame or your lineage, that you, being prosperous, wish to boast to me, who am not prosperous.
न हि दुःखेषु शोचन्ति न प्रहृष्यन्ति चर्द्धिषु ।
कृतप्रज्ञा ज्ञानतृप्ताः क्षान्ताः सन्तो मनीषिणः ॥२७॥
27. na hi duḥkheṣu śocanti na prahṛṣyanti carddhiṣu ,
kṛtaprajñā jñānatṛptāḥ kṣāntāḥ santo manīṣiṇaḥ.
27. na hi duḥkheṣu śocanti na prahṛṣyanti ca ṛddhiṣu
kṛtaprajñāḥ jñānatṛptāḥ kṣāntāḥ santaḥ manīṣiṇaḥ
27. hi kṛtaprajñāḥ jñānatṛptāḥ kṣāntāḥ santaḥ manīṣiṇaḥ
duḥkheṣu na śocanti ca ṛddhiṣu na prahṛṣyanti
27. Indeed, wise men (manīṣiṇaḥ) and good people, whose understanding (prajñā) is firm, who are satisfied by knowledge, and who are patient, neither grieve in sorrows nor rejoice in prosperities.
त्वं तु प्राकृतया बुद्ध्या पुरंदर विकत्थसे ।
यदाहमिव भावी त्वं तदा नैवं वदिष्यसि ॥२८॥
28. tvaṁ tu prākṛtayā buddhyā puraṁdara vikatthase ,
yadāhamiva bhāvī tvaṁ tadā naivaṁ vadiṣyasi.
28. tvam tu prākṛtayā buddhyā purandara vikatthase
yadā aham iva bhāvī tvam tadā na evam vadiṣyasi
28. tu purandara tvam prākṛtayā buddhyā vikatthase
yadā tvam aham iva bhāvī tadā evam na vadiṣyasi
28. But you, O Purandara (Purandara), boast with an ordinary understanding. When you become like me, then you will not speak thus.
