युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
प्रियः सर्वस्य लोकस्य सर्वसत्त्वाभिनन्दिता ।
गुणैः सर्वैरुपेतश्च को न्वस्ति भुवि मानवः ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
priyaḥ sarvasya lokasya sarvasattvābhinanditā ,
guṇaiḥ sarvairupetaśca ko nvasti bhuvi mānavaḥ.

1. Yudhishthira said: "Who, indeed, is that human on earth who is dear to all people, lauded by all beings, and endowed with all qualities?"
भीष्म उवाच ।
अत्र ते वर्तयिष्यामि पृच्छतो भरतर्षभ ।
उग्रसेनस्य संवादं नारदे केशवस्य च ॥२॥
2. bhīṣma uvāca ,
atra te vartayiṣyāmi pṛcchato bharatarṣabha ,
ugrasenasya saṁvādaṁ nārade keśavasya ca.

2. Bhishma said: "O best of Bharatas, I shall now relate to you, who are asking, the conversation of Ugrasena with Nārada and Keśava (Krishna)."
उग्रसेन उवाच ।
पश्य संकल्पते लोको नारदस्य प्रकीर्तने ।
मन्ये स गुणसंपन्नो ब्रूहि तन्मम पृच्छतः ॥३॥
3. ugrasena uvāca ,
paśya saṁkalpate loko nāradasya prakīrtane ,
manye sa guṇasaṁpanno brūhi tanmama pṛcchataḥ.

3. Ugrasena said: "Look, people are intently focused when Nārada is being praised. I believe he is endowed with good qualities. Please tell me that (about him), as I am asking."
वासुदेव उवाच ।
कुकुराधिप यान्मन्ये शृणु तान्मे विवक्षतः ।
नारदस्य गुणान्साधून्संक्षेपेण नराधिप ॥४॥
4. vāsudeva uvāca ,
kukurādhipa yānmanye śṛṇu tānme vivakṣataḥ ,
nāradasya guṇānsādhūnsaṁkṣepeṇa narādhipa.

vivakṣataḥ | nārdasya guṇān sādhūn saṃkṣepeṇa narādhipa

4. Vasudeva said: "O King of Kukuras, O king of men, listen to the excellent qualities of Nārada, which I consider (to be so), as I briefly relate them to you."
न चारित्रनिमित्तोऽस्याहंकारो देहपातनः ।
अभिन्नश्रुतचारित्रस्तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥५॥
5. na cāritranimitto'syāhaṁkāro dehapātanaḥ ,
abhinnaśrutacāritrastasmātsarvatra pūjitaḥ.
5. na cāritranimittaḥ asya ahaṅkāraḥ dehapātanaḥ
abhinnaśrutacāritraḥ tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
5. asya ahaṅkāraḥ cāritranimittaḥ dehapātanaḥ na
abhinnaśrutacāritraḥ tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
5. His ego (ahaṅkāra) is not caused by his character nor does it lead to the body's downfall. Since his knowledge and conduct are inseparable, he is revered everywhere.
तपस्वी नारदो बाढं वाचि नास्य व्यतिक्रमः ।
कामाद्वा यदि वा लोभात्तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥६॥
6. tapasvī nārado bāḍhaṁ vāci nāsya vyatikramaḥ ,
kāmādvā yadi vā lobhāttasmātsarvatra pūjitaḥ.
6. tapasvī nāradaḥ bāḍham vāci na asya vyatikramaḥ
kāmāt vā yadi vā lobhāt tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
6. nāradaḥ bāḍham tapasvī asya vāci kāmāt vā yadi
vā lobhāt vyatikramaḥ na tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
6. Narada (nāradaḥ) is indeed an ascetic (tapasvī). There is no transgression in his speech, whether from desire or from greed. Therefore, he is revered everywhere.
अध्यात्मविधितत्त्वज्ञः क्षान्तः शक्तो जितेन्द्रियः ।
ऋजुश्च सत्यवादी च तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥७॥
7. adhyātmavidhitattvajñaḥ kṣāntaḥ śakto jitendriyaḥ ,
ṛjuśca satyavādī ca tasmātsarvatra pūjitaḥ.
7. adhyātmavidhitattvajñaḥ kṣāntaḥ śaktaḥ jitendriyaḥ
ṛjuḥ ca satyavādī ca tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
7. adhyātmavidhitattvajñaḥ kṣāntaḥ śaktaḥ jitendriyaḥ
ṛjuḥ ca satyavādī ca tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
7. He is a knower of the truth of spiritual principles (adhyātma), patient, capable, and has controlled his senses. He is also straightforward and a speaker of truth. Therefore, he is revered everywhere.
तेजसा यशसा बुद्ध्या नयेन विनयेन च ।
जन्मना तपसा वृद्धस्तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥८॥
8. tejasā yaśasā buddhyā nayena vinayena ca ,
janmanā tapasā vṛddhastasmātsarvatra pūjitaḥ.

janmanā tapasā vṛddhaḥ tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
8. tejasā yaśasā buddhyā nayena vinayena ca

8. He is venerable through his spiritual power, fame, intellect, prudence, and modesty. He is also venerable through his birth and austerities (tapas). Therefore, he is revered everywhere.
सुखशीलः सुसंभोगः सुभोज्यः स्वादरः शुचिः ।
सुवाक्यश्चाप्यनीर्ष्यश्च तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥९॥
9. sukhaśīlaḥ susaṁbhogaḥ subhojyaḥ svādaraḥ śuciḥ ,
suvākyaścāpyanīrṣyaśca tasmātsarvatra pūjitaḥ.
9. sukhaśīlaḥ susaṃbhogaḥ subhojyaḥ svādaraḥ śuciḥ
suvākyaḥ ca api anīrṣyaḥ ca tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
9. sukhaśīlaḥ susaṃbhogaḥ subhojyaḥ svādaraḥ śuciḥ
suvākyaḥ ca api anīrṣyaḥ ca tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
9. He is of a pleasant disposition, enjoys good things, eats well, has self-respect, and is pure. He also speaks kindly and is not envious; therefore, he is honored everywhere.
कल्याणं कुरुते बाढं पापमस्मिन्न विद्यते ।
न प्रीयते परानर्थैस्तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥१०॥
10. kalyāṇaṁ kurute bāḍhaṁ pāpamasminna vidyate ,
na prīyate parānarthaistasmātsarvatra pūjitaḥ.
10. kalyāṇam kurute bāḍham pāpam asmin na vidyate
na prīyate parānarthaiḥ tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
10. bāḍham kalyāṇam kurute pāpam asmin na vidyate
parānarthaiḥ na prīyate tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
10. He certainly performs auspicious actions; no sin exists in him. He is not pleased by the misfortunes of others; therefore, he is honored everywhere.
वेदश्रुतिभिराख्यानैरर्थानभिजिगीषते ।
तितिक्षुरनवज्ञश्च तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥११॥
11. vedaśrutibhirākhyānairarthānabhijigīṣate ,
titikṣuranavajñaśca tasmātsarvatra pūjitaḥ.
11. vedaśrutibhiḥ ākhyānaiḥ arthān abhijigīṣate
titikṣuḥ anavajñaḥ ca tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
11. vedaśrutibhiḥ ākhyānaiḥ arthān abhijigīṣate
titikṣuḥ anavajñaḥ ca tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
11. He desires to fully understand meanings through Vedic texts (Veda), traditional wisdom (śruti), and narratives. He is patient and not contemptuous; therefore, he is honored everywhere.
समत्वाद्धि प्रियो नास्ति नाप्रियश्च कथंचन ।
मनोनुकूलवादी च तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥१२॥
12. samatvāddhi priyo nāsti nāpriyaśca kathaṁcana ,
manonukūlavādī ca tasmātsarvatra pūjitaḥ.
12. samatvāt hi priyaḥ na asti na apriyaḥ ca kathaṃcana
manonukūlavādī ca tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
12. hi samatvāt priyaḥ na asti apriyaḥ ca kathaṃcana
na manonukūlavādī ca tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
12. Indeed, due to his equanimity, no one is dear to him, nor is anyone hateful in any way. And he speaks agreeably; therefore, he is honored everywhere.
बहुश्रुतश्चैत्रकथः पण्डितोऽनलसोऽशठः ।
अदीनोऽक्रोधनोऽलुब्धस्तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥१३॥
13. bahuśrutaścaitrakathaḥ paṇḍito'nalaso'śaṭhaḥ ,
adīno'krodhano'lubdhastasmātsarvatra pūjitaḥ.
13. bahuśrutaḥ ca caitrakathaḥ paṇḍitaḥ analasaḥ aśaṭhaḥ
adīnaḥ akrodhanaḥ alubdhaḥ tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
13. bahuśrutaḥ ca caitrakathaḥ paṇḍitaḥ analasaḥ aśaṭhaḥ
adīnaḥ akrodhanaḥ alubdhaḥ tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
13. Because he is well-learned, eloquent, wise, diligent, honest, dignified, free from anger, and free from greed, he is honored everywhere.
नार्थे न धर्मे कामे वा भूतपूर्वोऽस्य विग्रहः ।
दोषाश्चास्य समुच्छिन्नास्तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥१४॥
14. nārthe na dharme kāme vā bhūtapūrvo'sya vigrahaḥ ,
doṣāścāsya samucchinnāstasmātsarvatra pūjitaḥ.
14. na arthe na dharme kāme vā bhūtapūrvaḥ asya vigrahaḥ
doṣāḥ ca asya samucchinnāḥ tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
14. asya arthe na dharme na kāme vā bhūtapūrvaḥ vigrahaḥ
ca asya doṣāḥ samucchinnāḥ tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
14. Never before has he had a conflict regarding wealth, natural law (dharma), or desire. And his faults have been completely eradicated. Therefore, he is honored everywhere.
दृढभक्तिरनिन्द्यात्मा श्रुतवाननृशंसवान् ।
वीतसंमोहदोषश्च तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥१५॥
15. dṛḍhabhaktiranindyātmā śrutavānanṛśaṁsavān ,
vītasaṁmohadoṣaśca tasmātsarvatra pūjitaḥ.
15. dṛḍhabhaktiḥ anindyātmā śrutavān anṛśaṃsavān
vītasaṃmohadoṣaḥ ca tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
15. dṛḍhabhaktiḥ anindyātmā śrutavān anṛśaṃsavān
ca vītasaṃmohadoṣaḥ tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
15. He possesses firm devotion (bhakti), has a blameless inner self (ātman), is learned, and is compassionate. His fault of delusion has also vanished. Therefore, he is honored everywhere.
असक्तः सर्वसङ्गेषु सक्तात्मेव च लक्ष्यते ।
अदीर्घसंशयो वाग्मी तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥१६॥
16. asaktaḥ sarvasaṅgeṣu saktātmeva ca lakṣyate ,
adīrghasaṁśayo vāgmī tasmātsarvatra pūjitaḥ.
16. asaktaḥ sarvasaṅgeṣu saktātmā iva ca lakṣyate
adīrghasaṃśayaḥ vāgmī tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
16. sarvasaṅgeṣu asaktaḥ ca saktātmā iva lakṣyate
adīrghasaṃśayaḥ vāgmī tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
16. Although he is unattached to all things, he appears as if he were attached. He has no prolonged doubts and is eloquent. Therefore, he is honored everywhere.
समाधिर्नास्य मानार्थे नात्मानं स्तौति कर्हिचित् ।
अनीर्ष्युर्दृढसंभाषस्तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥१७॥
17. samādhirnāsya mānārthe nātmānaṁ stauti karhicit ,
anīrṣyurdṛḍhasaṁbhāṣastasmātsarvatra pūjitaḥ.
17. samādhiḥ na asya māna-arthe na ātmānam stauti karhicit
anīrṣyuḥ dṛḍha-saṃbhāṣaḥ tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
17. asya samādhiḥ māna-arthe na.
ātmānam karhicit na stauti.
anīrṣyuḥ dṛḍha-saṃbhāṣaḥ tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
17. His deep meditation (samādhi) is not for the sake of honor, nor does he ever praise himself. He is free from envy and resolute in his speech. Therefore, he is honored everywhere.
लोकस्य विविधं वृत्तं प्रकृतेश्चाप्यकुत्सयन् ।
संसर्गविद्याकुशलस्तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥१८॥
18. lokasya vividhaṁ vṛttaṁ prakṛteścāpyakutsayan ,
saṁsargavidyākuśalastasmātsarvatra pūjitaḥ.
18. lokasya vividham vṛttam prakṛteḥ ca api akutsayan
saṃsarga-vidyā-kuśalaḥ tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
18. lokasya vividham vṛttam prakṛteḥ ca api akutsayan
saṃsarga-vidyā-kuśalaḥ tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
18. Not criticizing the diverse conduct of the world and also of nature (prakṛti), and being skilled in the knowledge of interaction, therefore he is honored everywhere.
नासूयत्यागमं कंचित्स्वं तपो नोपजीवति ।
अवन्ध्यकालो वश्यात्मा तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥१९॥
19. nāsūyatyāgamaṁ kaṁcitsvaṁ tapo nopajīvati ,
avandhyakālo vaśyātmā tasmātsarvatra pūjitaḥ.
19. na asūyati āgamam kañcit svam tapaḥ na upajīvati
avandhya-kālaḥ vaśya-ātmā tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
19. kañcit āgamam na asūyati svam tapaḥ na upajīvati
avandhya-kālaḥ vaśya-ātmā tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
19. He does not criticize any sacred tradition (āgama), nor does he exploit his own austerities (tapas). He makes good use of his time and has a controlled self (ātman). Therefore, he is honored everywhere.
कृतश्रमः कृतप्रज्ञो न च तृप्तः समाधितः ।
नियमस्थोऽप्रमत्तश्च तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥२०॥
20. kṛtaśramaḥ kṛtaprajño na ca tṛptaḥ samādhitaḥ ,
niyamastho'pramattaśca tasmātsarvatra pūjitaḥ.
20. kṛta-śramaḥ kṛta-prajñaḥ na ca tṛptaḥ samādhitaḥ
niyamasthaḥ apramattaḥ ca tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
20. kṛta-śramaḥ kṛta-prajñaḥ samādhitaḥ tṛptaḥ ca na
niyamasthaḥ apramattaḥ ca tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
20. He is one who has put in effort and acquired wisdom, yet he is not content with his deep meditation (samādhi). He is disciplined and vigilant, and therefore he is honored everywhere.
सापत्रपश्च युक्तश्च सुनेयः श्रेयसे परैः ।
अभेत्ता परगुह्यानां तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥२१॥
21. sāpatrapaśca yuktaśca suneyaḥ śreyase paraiḥ ,
abhettā paraguhyānāṁ tasmātsarvatra pūjitaḥ.
21. sāpatrapaḥ ca yuktaḥ ca suneyaḥ śreyase paraiḥ
abhettā paraguhyānām tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
21. He is modest, composed, and easily amenable to guidance from others for their well-being. He does not reveal the secrets of others. Therefore, he is honored everywhere.
न हृष्यत्यर्थलाभेषु नालाभेषु व्यथत्यपि ।
स्थिरबुद्धिरसक्तात्मा तस्मात्सर्वत्र पूजितः ॥२२॥
22. na hṛṣyatyarthalābheṣu nālābheṣu vyathatyapi ,
sthirabuddhirasaktātmā tasmātsarvatra pūjitaḥ.
22. na hṛṣyati arthalābheṣu na alābheṣu vyathati api
sthirabuddhiḥ asaktātmā tasmāt sarvatra pūjitaḥ
22. He neither rejoices in material gains nor is distressed by losses. Possessing a steady mind and an unattached self (ātman), he is therefore respected everywhere.
तं सर्वगुणसंपन्नं दक्षं शुचिमकातरम् ।
कालज्ञं च नयज्ञं च कः प्रियं न करिष्यति ॥२३॥
23. taṁ sarvaguṇasaṁpannaṁ dakṣaṁ śucimakātaram ,
kālajñaṁ ca nayajñaṁ ca kaḥ priyaṁ na kariṣyati.
23. tam sarvaguṇasampannam dakṣam śucim akātaram
kālajñam ca nayajñam ca kaḥ priyam na kariṣyati
23. Who would not be fond of such a person - one endowed with all good qualities, skillful, pure, fearless, knowledgeable of timing, and knowledgeable of proper policy?
