संजय उवाच ।
ततस्ते प्रययुः सर्वे निवासाय महीक्षितः ।
शङ्खान्प्रध्मापयन्तो वै हृष्टाः परिघबाहवः ॥१॥

tataste prayayuḥ sarve nivāsāya mahīkṣitaḥ ,

1. Sanjaya said: Then all of them, joyful and strong-armed, went forth to the king's encampment, loudly blowing their conch shells.
पाण्डवान्गच्छतश्चापि शिबिरं नो विशां पते ।
महेष्वासोऽन्वगात्पश्चाद्युयुत्सुः सात्यकिस्तथा ॥२॥
2. pāṇḍavāngacchataścāpi śibiraṁ no viśāṁ pate ,
maheṣvāso'nvagātpaścādyuyutsuḥ sātyakistathā.
2. pāṇḍavān gacchatam ca api śibiram naḥ viśām pate |
maheṣvāsaḥ anvagāt paścāt yuyutsuḥ sātyakiḥ tathā
2. viśām pate pāṇḍavān gacchatam ca api naḥ śibiram,
paścāt maheṣvāsaḥ yuyutsuḥ tathā sātyakiḥ anvagāt
2. O lord of men, Yuyutsu and Sātyaki, the great archers, also followed behind to our camp as the Pāṇḍavas were going.
धृष्टद्युम्नः शिखण्डी च द्रौपदेयाश्च सर्वशः ।
सर्वे चान्ये महेष्वासा ययुः स्वशिबिराण्युत ॥३॥
3. dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ śikhaṇḍī ca draupadeyāśca sarvaśaḥ ,
sarve cānye maheṣvāsā yayuḥ svaśibirāṇyuta.
3. dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ śikhaṇḍī ca draupadeyāḥ ca sarvaśaḥ
| sarve ca anye maheṣvāsāḥ yayuḥ svaśibirāṇi uta

3. And Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Śikhaṇḍī, and all the sons of Draupadī, and indeed all other great archers, went to their own camps.
ततस्ते प्राविशन्पार्था हतत्विट्कं हतेश्वरम् ।
दुर्योधनस्य शिबिरं रङ्गवद्विसृते जने ॥४॥
4. tataste prāviśanpārthā hatatviṭkaṁ hateśvaram ,
duryodhanasya śibiraṁ raṅgavadvisṛte jane.
4. tataḥ te prāviśan pārthāḥ hatatviṭkam hateśvaram
| duryodhanasya śibiram raṅgavatu visṛte jane
4. tataḥ te pārthāḥ hatatviṭkam hateśvaram duryodhanasya śibiram,
visṛte jane raṅgavatu prāviśan
4. Then the sons of Pṛthā (Pāṇḍavas) entered Duryodhana's camp, which had lost its splendor and whose lord was defeated, while the people were scattered, like a stage (after a performance).
गतोत्सवं पुरमिव हृतनागमिव ह्रदम् ।
स्त्रीवर्षवरभूयिष्ठं वृद्धामात्यैरधिष्ठितम् ॥५॥
5. gatotsavaṁ puramiva hṛtanāgamiva hradam ,
strīvarṣavarabhūyiṣṭhaṁ vṛddhāmātyairadhiṣṭhitam.
5. gata-utsavam puram iva hṛta-nāgam iva hradam
strī-varṣa-vara-bhūyiṣṭham vṛddha-āmātyaiḥ adhiṣṭhitam
5. A city deprived of festivities, like a lake from which its elephant has been removed; it was filled mostly with women, eunuchs, and old men, and governed by aged ministers.
तत्रैतान्पर्युपातिष्ठन्दुर्योधनपुरःसराः ।
कृताञ्जलिपुटा राजन्काषायमलिनाम्बराः ॥६॥
6. tatraitānparyupātiṣṭhanduryodhanapuraḥsarāḥ ,
kṛtāñjalipuṭā rājankāṣāyamalināmbarāḥ.
6. tatra etān paryupātiṣṭhan duryodhana-puraḥ-sarāḥ
kṛta-añjali-puṭāḥ rājan kāṣāya-malina-ambarāḥ
6. O King, there, with Duryodhana at their head, and with their palms joined in reverence, they stood surrounding those (Pandavas), wearing soiled saffron robes.
शिबिरं समनुप्राप्य कुरुराजस्य पाण्डवाः ।
अवतेरुर्महाराज रथेभ्यो रथसत्तमाः ॥७॥
7. śibiraṁ samanuprāpya kururājasya pāṇḍavāḥ ,
avaterurmahārāja rathebhyo rathasattamāḥ.
7. śibiram samanuprāpya kuru-rājasya pāṇḍavāḥ
avateruḥ mahārāja rathebhyaḥ ratha-sattamāḥ
7. O Great King, having arrived at the Kuru king's camp, the Pandavas, who were excellent charioteers, descended from their chariots.
ततो गाण्डीवधन्वानमभ्यभाषत केशवः ।
स्थितः प्रियहिते नित्यमतीव भरतर्षभ ॥८॥
8. tato gāṇḍīvadhanvānamabhyabhāṣata keśavaḥ ,
sthitaḥ priyahite nityamatīva bharatarṣabha.
8. tataḥ gāṇḍīva-dhanvānam abhyabhāṣata keśavaḥ
sthitaḥ priya-hite nityam atīva bharata-ṛṣabha
8. O best among the Bharatas, then Keśava (Krishna), who was always exceedingly committed to his dear one's (Arjuna's) welfare, addressed Arjuna, the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow.
अवरोपय गाण्डीवमक्षय्यौ च महेषुधी ।
अथाहमवरोक्ष्यामि पश्चाद्भरतसत्तम ॥९॥
9. avaropaya gāṇḍīvamakṣayyau ca maheṣudhī ,
athāhamavarokṣyāmi paścādbharatasattama.
9. avaropaya gāṇḍīvam akṣayyau ca maheṣudhī |
atha aham avarokṣyāmi paścāt bharatasattama
9. bharatasattama gāṇḍīvam akṣayyau maheṣudhī
ca avaropaya atha aham paścāt avarokṣyāmi
9. Lower the Gāṇḍīva bow and the two inexhaustible quivers. Then, O best of the Bhāratas, I will descend afterwards.
स्वयं चैवावरोह त्वमेतच्छ्रेयस्तवानघ ।
तच्चाकरोत्तथा वीरः पाण्डुपुत्रो धनंजयः ॥१०॥
10. svayaṁ caivāvaroha tvametacchreyastavānagha ,
taccākarottathā vīraḥ pāṇḍuputro dhanaṁjayaḥ.
10. svayam ca eva avaroha tvam etat śreyaḥ tava anagha
| tat ca akarot tathā vīraḥ pāṇḍuputraḥ dhanañjayaḥ
10. anagha tvam svayam ca eva avaroha etat tava śreyaḥ
ca vīraḥ pāṇḍuputraḥ dhanañjayaḥ tat tathā akarot
10. And you yourself should descend, O sinless one; this is indeed beneficial for you. The hero Arjuna (Pāṇḍu's son) then did just that.
अथ पश्चात्ततः कृष्णो रश्मीनुत्सृज्य वाजिनाम् ।
अवारोहत मेधावी रथाद्गाण्डीवधन्वनः ॥११॥
11. atha paścāttataḥ kṛṣṇo raśmīnutsṛjya vājinām ,
avārohata medhāvī rathādgāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ.
11. atha paścāt tataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ raśmīn utsṛjya vājinām
| avārohata medhāvī rathāt gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ
11. atha paścāt tataḥ medhāvī kṛṣṇaḥ vājinām raśmīn
utsṛjya gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ rathāt avārohata
11. Then, after that, the intelligent Kṛṣṇa, releasing the reins of the horses, descended from the chariot of the wielder of Gāṇḍīva (Arjuna).
अथावतीर्णे भूतानामीश्वरे सुमहात्मनि ।
कपिरन्तर्दधे दिव्यो ध्वजो गाण्डीवधन्वनः ॥१२॥
12. athāvatīrṇe bhūtānāmīśvare sumahātmani ,
kapirantardadhe divyo dhvajo gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ.
12. atha avatīrṇe bhūtānām īśvare sumahātmani |
kapiḥ antardadhe divyaḥ dhvajaḥ gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ
12. atha bhūtānām sumahātmani īśvare avatīrṇe
gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ divyaḥ kapiḥ dhvajaḥ antardadhe
12. Then, as the greatly magnanimous Lord (īśvara) of all beings, very great-souled (sumahātman), descended, the divine monkey banner on the flag of the wielder of Gāṇḍīva (Arjuna) disappeared.
स दग्धो द्रोणकर्णाभ्यां दिव्यैरस्त्रैर्महारथः ।
अथ दीप्तोऽग्निना ह्याशु प्रजज्वाल महीपते ॥१३॥
13. sa dagdho droṇakarṇābhyāṁ divyairastrairmahārathaḥ ,
atha dīpto'gninā hyāśu prajajvāla mahīpate.
13. सः दग्धः द्रोणकर्णाभ्याम् दिव्यैः अस्त्रैः
महारथः अथ दीप्तः अग्निना हि आशु प्रजज्वाल महीपते
13. महीपते सः महारथः द्रोणकर्णाभ्याम् दिव्यैः
अस्त्रैः दग्धः अथ अग्निना दीप्तः हि आशु प्रजज्वाल
13. O King, that magnificent chariot, already damaged by Droṇa and Karṇa's divine weapons, then quickly burst into flames, ignited by fire.
सोपासङ्गः सरश्मिश्च साश्वः सयुगबन्धुरः ।
भस्मीभूतोऽपतद्भूमौ रथो गाण्डीवधन्वनः ॥१४॥
14. sopāsaṅgaḥ saraśmiśca sāśvaḥ sayugabandhuraḥ ,
bhasmībhūto'patadbhūmau ratho gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ.
14. स-उपासङ्गः स-रश्मिः च स-अश्वः स-युगबन्धुरः
भस्मीभूतः अपतत् भूमौ रथः गाण्डीवधन्वनः
14. गाण्डीवधन्वनः रथः स-उपासङ्गः स-रश्मिः च
स-अश्वः स-युगबन्धुरः भस्मीभूतः भूमौ अपतत्
14. The chariot of Arjuna (gāṇḍīvadhanvan), complete with its quivers, reins, horses, yoke, and frame, was reduced to ashes and fell to the ground.
तं तथा भस्मभूतं तु दृष्ट्वा पाण्डुसुताः प्रभो ।
अभवन्विस्मिता राजन्नर्जुनश्चेदमब्रवीत् ॥१५॥
15. taṁ tathā bhasmabhūtaṁ tu dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍusutāḥ prabho ,
abhavanvismitā rājannarjunaścedamabravīt.
15. तम् तथा भस्मभूतम् तु दृष्ट्वा पाण्डुसुताः प्रभो
अभवन् विस्मिताः राजन् अर्जुनः च इदम् अब्रवीत्
15. प्रभो राजन् तु पाण्डुसुताः तम् तथा भस्मभूतम्
दृष्ट्वा विस्मिताः अभवन् च अर्जुनः इदम् अब्रवीत्
15. O Lord, O King, when the sons of Pāṇḍu saw that chariot thus reduced to ashes, they were astonished, and Arjuna spoke these words.
कृताञ्जलिः सप्रणयं प्रणिपत्याभिवाद्य च ।
गोविन्द कस्माद्भगवन्रथो दग्धोऽयमग्निना ॥१६॥
16. kṛtāñjaliḥ sapraṇayaṁ praṇipatyābhivādya ca ,
govinda kasmādbhagavanratho dagdho'yamagninā.
16. कृताञ्जलिः सप्रणयम् प्रणिपत्य अभिवाद्य च
गोविन्द कस्मात् भगवन् रथः दग्धः अयम् अग्निना
16. कृताञ्जलिः सप्रणयम् प्रणिपत्य च अभिवाद्य [सः अर्जुनः
अवदत्] गोविन्द भगवन् अयम् रथः कस्मात् अग्निना दग्धः
16. With folded hands, reverently bowing down and saluting, Arjuna asked: 'O Govinda, O Lord, for what reason was this chariot consumed by fire?'
किमेतन्महदाश्चर्यमभवद्यदुनन्दन ।
तन्मे ब्रूहि महाबाहो श्रोतव्यं यदि मन्यसे ॥१७॥
17. kimetanmahadāścaryamabhavadyadunandana ,
tanme brūhi mahābāho śrotavyaṁ yadi manyase.
17. kim etat mahat āścaryam abhavat yadunandana
tat me brūhi mahābāho śrotavyam yadi manyase
17. yadunandana mahābāho etat mahat āścaryam kim
abhavat tat me brūhi yadi śrotavyam manyase
17. O delight of the Yadus, O mighty-armed one, what is this great wonder that has occurred? Please tell me about it if you consider it worth hearing.
वासुदेव उवाच ।
अस्त्रैर्बहुविधैर्दग्धः पूर्वमेवायमर्जुन ।
मदधिष्ठितत्वात्समरे न विशीर्णः परंतप ॥१८॥
18. vāsudeva uvāca ,
astrairbahuvidhairdagdhaḥ pūrvamevāyamarjuna ,
madadhiṣṭhitatvātsamare na viśīrṇaḥ paraṁtapa.
18. vāsudeva uvāca astraiḥ bahuvidhaiḥ dagdhaḥ pūrvam eva ayam
arjuna mat adhiṣṭhitatvāt samare na viśīrṇaḥ paraṃtapa
18. vāsudeva uvāca arjuna paraṃtapa ayam pūrvam eva bahuvidhaiḥ
astraiḥ dagdhaḥ samare mat adhiṣṭhitatvāt na viśīrṇaḥ
18. Vāsudeva said: "O Arjuna, O scorcher of foes, this (standard) was previously burnt by many kinds of weapons. Yet, because of my presence (mad-adhiṣṭhitatvāt) in the battle, it was not shattered."
इदानीं तु विशीर्णोऽयं दग्धो ब्रह्मास्त्रतेजसा ।
मया विमुक्तः कौन्तेय त्वय्यद्य कृतकर्मणि ॥१९॥
19. idānīṁ tu viśīrṇo'yaṁ dagdho brahmāstratejasā ,
mayā vimuktaḥ kaunteya tvayyadya kṛtakarmaṇi.
19. idānīm tu viśīrṇaḥ ayam dagdhaḥ brahmāstra tejasā
mayā vimuktaḥ kaunteya tvayi adya kṛta karmaṇi
19. kaunteya idānīm tu tvayi adya kṛta karmaṇi mayā
vimuktaḥ ayam brahmāstra tejasā dagdhaḥ viśīrṇaḥ
19. But now, O son of Kunti, this (standard) has been shattered and burnt by the power of the Brahmāstra, because I released my protection from it, as your task is now accomplished.
संजय उवाच ।
ईषदुत्स्मयमानश्च भगवान्केशवोऽरिहा ।
परिष्वज्य च राजानं युधिष्ठिरमभाषत ॥२०॥
20. saṁjaya uvāca ,
īṣadutsmayamānaśca bhagavānkeśavo'rihā ,
pariṣvajya ca rājānaṁ yudhiṣṭhiramabhāṣata.
20. saṃjaya uvāca īṣat utsmayamānaḥ ca bhagavān keśavaḥ
arihā pariṣvajya ca rājānam yudhiṣṭhiram abhāṣata
20. saṃjaya uvāca ca īṣat utsmayamānaḥ arihā bhagavān
keśavaḥ ca rājānam yudhiṣṭhiram pariṣvajya abhāṣata
20. Sanjaya said: And the divine (bhagavān) Keśava, the destroyer of enemies, smiling slightly, embraced King Yudhishthira and then spoke.
दिष्ट्या जयसि कौन्तेय दिष्ट्या ते शत्रवो जिताः ।
दिष्ट्या गाण्डीवधन्वा च भीमसेनश्च पाण्डवः ॥२१॥
21. diṣṭyā jayasi kaunteya diṣṭyā te śatravo jitāḥ ,
diṣṭyā gāṇḍīvadhanvā ca bhīmasenaśca pāṇḍavaḥ.
21. diṣṭyā jayasi kaunteya diṣṭyā te śatravaḥ jitāḥ
diṣṭyā gāṇḍīvadhanvā ca bhīmasenaḥ ca pāṇḍavaḥ
21. kaunteya diṣṭyā jayasi diṣṭyā te śatravaḥ jitāḥ
pāṇḍava ca gāṇḍīvadhanvā ca bhīmasenaḥ diṣṭyā
21. Fortunately, O son of Kunti, you are victorious! Fortunately, your enemies have been conquered. And fortunately, O Pāṇḍava, both Arjuna, the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow, and Bhīmasena are safe and sound.
त्वं चापि कुशली राजन्माद्रीपुत्रौ च पाण्डवौ ।
मुक्ता वीरक्षयादस्मात्संग्रामान्निहतद्विषः ।
क्षिप्रमुत्तरकालानि कुरु कार्याणि भारत ॥२२॥
22. tvaṁ cāpi kuśalī rājanmādrīputrau ca pāṇḍavau ,
muktā vīrakṣayādasmātsaṁgrāmānnihatadviṣaḥ ,
kṣipramuttarakālāni kuru kāryāṇi bhārata.
22. tvam ca api kuśalī rājan mādrīputrau
ca pāṇḍavau muktāḥ vīrakṣayāt
asmāt saṃgrāmāt nihatadviṣaḥ kṣipram
uttarakālāni kuru kāryāṇi bhārata
22. rājan bhārata tvam ca api kuśalī ca
mādrīputrau pāṇḍavau nihatadviṣaḥ
asmāt vīrakṣayāt saṃgrāmāt muktāḥ
kṣipram uttarakālāni kāryāṇi kuru
22. O King, you are also well, as are the two sons of Mādrī (Nakula and Sahadeva), the Pāṇḍavas. Having slain your foes, you are all released from this battle, which caused the destruction of heroes. O Bhārata, quickly undertake the duties of the post-war period.
उपयातमुपप्लव्यं सह गाण्डीवधन्वना ।
आनीय मधुपर्कं मां यत्पुरा त्वमवोचथाः ॥२३॥
23. upayātamupaplavyaṁ saha gāṇḍīvadhanvanā ,
ānīya madhuparkaṁ māṁ yatpurā tvamavocathāḥ.
23. upayātam upaplavyam saha gāṇḍīvadhanvanā
ānīya madhuparkam mām yat purā tvam avocathāḥ
23. tvam purā yat avocathāḥ upayātam upaplavyam
gāṇḍīvadhanvanā saha mām madhuparkam ānīya
23. What you, after arriving at Upaplavya with Arjuna, the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow, and after presenting me with the madhuparka offering, previously said to me—
एष भ्राता सखा चैव तव कृष्ण धनंजयः ।
रक्षितव्यो महाबाहो सर्वास्वापत्स्विति प्रभो ।
तव चैवं ब्रुवाणस्य तथेत्येवाहमब्रुवम् ॥२४॥
24. eṣa bhrātā sakhā caiva tava kṛṣṇa dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
rakṣitavyo mahābāho sarvāsvāpatsviti prabho ,
tava caivaṁ bruvāṇasya tathetyevāhamabruvam.
24. eṣaḥ bhrātā sakhā ca eva tava kṛṣṇa
dhanaṃjayaḥ rakṣitavyaḥ mahābāho
sarvāsu āpatsu iti prabho tava ca evam
bruvāṇasya tathā iti eva aham abruvam
24. kṛṣṇa mahābāho prabho eṣaḥ dhanaṃjayaḥ
tava bhrātā ca eva sakhā sarvāsu
āpatsu rakṣitavyaḥ ca evam bruvāṇasya
tava aham tathā iti eva abruvam
24. 'This Dhanaṃjaya (Arjuna) is your brother and indeed your friend, O Kṛṣṇa! O mighty-armed one, he must be protected in all dangers,' this is what you said, O Lord. And when you spoke thus, I indeed replied, 'So be it!'
स सव्यसाची गुप्तस्ते विजयी च नरेश्वर ।
भ्रातृभिः सह राजेन्द्र शूरः सत्यपराक्रमः ।
मुक्तो वीरक्षयादस्मात्संग्रामाद्रोमहर्षणात् ॥२५॥
25. sa savyasācī guptaste vijayī ca nareśvara ,
bhrātṛbhiḥ saha rājendra śūraḥ satyaparākramaḥ ,
mukto vīrakṣayādasmātsaṁgrāmādromaharṣaṇāt.
25. saḥ savyasācī guptaḥ te vijayī ca
nareśvara bhrātṛbhiḥ saha rājendra
śūraḥ satyaparākramaḥ muktaḥ
vīrakṣayāt asmāt saṃgrāmāt romaharṣaṇāt
25. nareśvara rājendra saḥ savyasācī te
guptaḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ saha vijayī ca
śūraḥ satyaparākramaḥ asmāt
romaharṣaṇāt vīrakṣayāt saṃgrāmāt muktaḥ
25. O ruler of men (nareśvara), O king of kings (rājendra), that ambidextrous Arjuna (savyasācī), who is under your protection, is victorious, brave, and of true valor, along with his brothers. He has been freed from this terrifying battle, which brought about the destruction of warriors.
एवमुक्तस्तु कृष्णेन धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
हृष्टरोमा महाराज प्रत्युवाच जनार्दनम् ॥२६॥
26. evamuktastu kṛṣṇena dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
hṛṣṭaromā mahārāja pratyuvāca janārdanam.
26. evam uktaḥ tu kṛṣṇena dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
hṛṣṭaromā mahārāja pratyuvāca janārdanam
26. mahārāja kṛṣṇena evam uktaḥ tu dharmarājaḥ
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ hṛṣṭaromā janārdanam pratyuvāca
26. O great king (mahārāja), Yudhishthira (Yudhiṣṭhira), the King of dharma, thus addressed by Krishna (Kṛṣṇa), his hair standing on end (hṛṣṭaromā), replied to Janardana (Janārdana).
प्रमुक्तं द्रोणकर्णाभ्यां ब्रह्मास्त्रमरिमर्दन ।
कस्त्वदन्यः सहेत्साक्षादपि वज्री पुरंदरः ॥२७॥
27. pramuktaṁ droṇakarṇābhyāṁ brahmāstramarimardana ,
kastvadanyaḥ sahetsākṣādapi vajrī puraṁdaraḥ.
27. pramuktam droṇakarṇābhyām brahmāstram arimardana
kaḥ tvadanyaḥ sahet sākṣāt api vajrī purandaraḥ
27. arimardana droṇakarṇābhyām pramuktam brahmāstram
tvadanyaḥ kaḥ sākṣāt api vajrī purandaraḥ sahet
27. O destroyer of foes (arimardana), who else but you could directly endure the (brahmāstra), which was released by Drona and Karna? Not even Indra, the wielder of the thunderbolt (vajrī) and destroyer of cities (purandara), could withstand it.
भवतस्तु प्रसादेन संग्रामे बहवो जिताः ।
महारणगतः पार्थो यच्च नासीत्पराङ्मुखः ॥२८॥
28. bhavatastu prasādena saṁgrāme bahavo jitāḥ ,
mahāraṇagataḥ pārtho yacca nāsītparāṅmukhaḥ.

mahāraṇagataḥ pārthaḥ yat ca na āsīt parāṅmukhaḥ

28. Indeed, by your grace, many were conquered in battle. And because Partha (Pārtha) entered that great war, he did not turn away from it.
तथैव च महाबाहो पर्यायैर्बहुभिर्मया ।
कर्मणामनुसंतानं तेजसश्च गतिः शुभा ॥२९॥
29. tathaiva ca mahābāho paryāyairbahubhirmayā ,
karmaṇāmanusaṁtānaṁ tejasaśca gatiḥ śubhā.
29. tathā eva ca mahābāho paryāyaiḥ bahubhiḥ mayā
karmaṇām anusaṃtānaṃ tejasaḥ ca gatiḥ śubhā
29. tathā eva ca mahābāho mayā bahubhiḥ paryāyaiḥ

29. And similarly, O mighty-armed one, by me, through many successive explanations, the continuous flow of actions (karma) and the auspicious trajectory of energy have been described.
उपप्लव्ये महर्षिर्मे कृष्णद्वैपायनोऽब्रवीत् ।
यतो धर्मस्ततः कृष्णो यतः कृष्णस्ततो जयः ॥३०॥
30. upaplavye maharṣirme kṛṣṇadvaipāyano'bravīt ,
yato dharmastataḥ kṛṣṇo yataḥ kṛṣṇastato jayaḥ.
30. upaplavy maharṣiḥ me kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaḥ abravīt
yataḥ dharmaḥ tataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ yataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ tataḥ jayaḥ

yataḥ dharmaḥ tataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ yataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ tataḥ jayaḥ
30. At Upaplavya, the great sage (maharṣi) Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana told me: 'Where there is natural law (dharma), there is Kṛṣṇa; where there is Kṛṣṇa, there is victory.'
इत्येवमुक्ते ते वीराः शिबिरं तव भारत ।
प्रविश्य प्रत्यपद्यन्त कोशरत्नर्द्धिसंचयान् ॥३१॥
31. ityevamukte te vīrāḥ śibiraṁ tava bhārata ,
praviśya pratyapadyanta kośaratnarddhisaṁcayān.

31. O Bhārata, once this was said, those heroes, having entered your camp, recovered the collected wealth of treasures and jewels.
रजतं जातरूपं च मणीनथ च मौक्तिकान् ।
भूषणान्यथ मुख्यानि कम्बलान्यजिनानि च ।
दासीदासमसंख्येयं राज्योपकरणानि च ॥३२॥
32. rajataṁ jātarūpaṁ ca maṇīnatha ca mauktikān ,
bhūṣaṇānyatha mukhyāni kambalānyajināni ca ,
dāsīdāsamasaṁkhyeyaṁ rājyopakaraṇāni ca.
32. rajatam jātarūpam ca maṇīn atha
ca mauktikān bhūṣaṇāni atha mukhyāni
kambalāni ajināni ca dāsīdāsam
asaṃkhyeyam rājyopakaraṇāni ca

32. Silver and gold, then jewels and pearls, and then principal ornaments; blankets and animal skins; and innumerable male and female servants along with equipment for the kingdom.
ते प्राप्य धनमक्षय्यं त्वदीयं भरतर्षभ ।
उदक्रोशन्महेष्वासा नरेन्द्र विजितारयः ॥३३॥
33. te prāpya dhanamakṣayyaṁ tvadīyaṁ bharatarṣabha ,
udakrośanmaheṣvāsā narendra vijitārayaḥ.
33. te prāpya dhanam akṣayyam tvadīyam bharatarṣabha
udakrośan maheṣvāsāḥ narendra vijitārayaḥ
33. bharatarṣabha narendra te maheṣvāsāḥ vijitārayaḥ

33. O best among the Bharatas (bharatarṣabha), O king (narendra), those great archers (maheṣvāsāḥ), who had conquered their enemies (vijitārayaḥ), having obtained your imperishable wealth, roared (in triumph).
ते तु वीराः समाश्वस्य वाहनान्यवमुच्य च ।
अतिष्ठन्त मुहुः सर्वे पाण्डवाः सात्यकिस्तथा ॥३४॥
34. te tu vīrāḥ samāśvasya vāhanānyavamucya ca ,
atiṣṭhanta muhuḥ sarve pāṇḍavāḥ sātyakistathā.

atiṣṭhanta muhuḥ sarve pāṇḍavāḥ sātyakiḥ tathā
34. tu te sarve vīrāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ tathā sātyakiḥ

34. But all those heroes, the Pāṇḍavas and Sātyaki, having refreshed themselves and unharnessed their vehicles, remained there for some time.
अथाब्रवीन्महाराज वासुदेवो महायशाः ।
अस्माभिर्मङ्गलार्थाय वस्तव्यं शिबिराद्बहिः ॥३५॥
35. athābravīnmahārāja vāsudevo mahāyaśāḥ ,
asmābhirmaṅgalārthāya vastavyaṁ śibirādbahiḥ.
35. atha abravīt mahārāja vāsudevaḥ mahāyaśāḥ
asmābhiḥ maṅgalārthāya vastavyam śibirāt bahiḥ
35. atha mahārāja mahāyaśāḥ vāsudevaḥ abravīt

35. Then, O great king (mahārāja), the greatly renowned (mahāyaśāḥ) Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) said: "For good fortune, we should reside outside the camp."
तथेत्युक्त्वा च ते सर्वे पाण्डवाः सात्यकिस्तथा ।
वासुदेवेन सहिता मङ्गलार्थं ययुर्बहिः ॥३६॥
36. tathetyuktvā ca te sarve pāṇḍavāḥ sātyakistathā ,
vāsudevena sahitā maṅgalārthaṁ yayurbahiḥ.
36. tathā iti uktvā ca te sarve pāṇḍavāḥ sātyakiḥ
tathā vāsudevena sahitāḥ maṅgalārtham yayuḥ bahiḥ
36. ca te sarve pāṇḍavāḥ tathā sātyakiḥ tathā iti
uktvā vāsudevena sahitāḥ maṅgalārtham बहिः yayuḥ
36. And saying 'So be it,' all those Pāṇḍavas and Sātyaki, accompanied by Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), went outside for good fortune.
ते समासाद्य सरितं पुण्यामोघवतीं नृप ।
न्यवसन्नथ तां रात्रिं पाण्डवा हतशत्रवः ॥३७॥
37. te samāsādya saritaṁ puṇyāmoghavatīṁ nṛpa ,
nyavasannatha tāṁ rātriṁ pāṇḍavā hataśatravaḥ.
37. te samāsādya saritam puṇyām amoghavatīm nṛpa
nyavasan atha tām rātrim pāṇḍavāḥ hataśatravaḥ
37. nṛpa hataśatravaḥ pāṇḍavāḥ puṇyām amoghavatīm

37. O King, the Pāṇḍavas, having slain their enemies, reached the sacred river Amoghavatī and then spent that night there.
ततः संप्रेषयामासुर्यादवं नागसाह्वयम् ।
स च प्रायाज्जवेनाशु वासुदेवः प्रतापवान् ।
दारुकं रथमारोप्य येन राजाम्बिकासुतः ॥३८॥
38. tataḥ saṁpreṣayāmāsuryādavaṁ nāgasāhvayam ,
sa ca prāyājjavenāśu vāsudevaḥ pratāpavān ,
dārukaṁ rathamāropya yena rājāmbikāsutaḥ.
38. tataḥ sampreṣayāmāsuḥ yādavam
nāgasāhvayam saḥ ca prāyāt javenā āśu
vāsudevaḥ pratāpavān dārukam
ratham āropya yena rājā ambikāsutaḥ
38. tataḥ pāṇḍavāḥ nāgasāhvayākhyam pratāpavān vāsudevaḥ yādavam sampreṣayāmāsuḥ saḥ ca dārukam ratham āropya yena ambikāsutaḥ rājā (āsīt),
teन javenā āśu prāyāt
38. Then, the Pāṇḍavas sent the mighty Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), a Yādava identified with Nāgasāhva. And he swiftly proceeded, making Dāruka mount the chariot, towards King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the son of Ambikā.
तमूचुः संप्रयास्यन्तं सैन्यसुग्रीववाहनम् ।
प्रत्याश्वासय गान्धारीं हतपुत्रां यशस्विनीम् ॥३९॥
39. tamūcuḥ saṁprayāsyantaṁ sainyasugrīvavāhanam ,
pratyāśvāsaya gāndhārīṁ hataputrāṁ yaśasvinīm.
39. tam ūcuḥ samprayāsyantam sainyasugrīvavāhanam
pratyāśvāsaya gāndhārīm hataputrām yaśasvinīm
39. sampra yāsyantam sainyasugrīvavāhanam tam (vasudevam) ūcuḥ

39. They said to him (Kṛṣṇa), who was about to depart, whose chariot was drawn by the excellent horses Sainya and Sugrīva: "Console the glorious Gāndhārī, whose sons have been slain."
स प्रायात्पाण्डवैरुक्तस्तत्पुरं सात्वतां वरः ।
आससादयिषुः क्षिप्रं गान्धारीं निहतात्मजाम् ॥४०॥
40. sa prāyātpāṇḍavairuktastatpuraṁ sātvatāṁ varaḥ ,
āsasādayiṣuḥ kṣipraṁ gāndhārīṁ nihatātmajām.
40. saḥ prāyāt pāṇḍavaiḥ uktaḥ tat puram sātvatām
varaḥ āsasādayiṣuḥ kṣipram gāndhārīm nihatātmajām
40. pāṇḍavaiḥ uktaḥ sātvatām varaḥ saḥ (kṛṣṇaḥ) nihatātmajām
gāndhārīm kṣipram āsasādayiṣuḥ tat puram prāyāt
40. He (Kṛṣṇa), the best among the Sātvatas, thus instructed by the Pāṇḍavas, quickly proceeded to that city, desiring to meet Gāndhārī, whose children (ātmajā) had been slain.
